Book Description
It is the fall of 1950. The Marines have made a pivotal breakthrough at Inchon, but a roller coaster awaits them. While Douglas MacArthur chomps at the bit, intent on surging across the 38th parallel, Brigadier General Fleming Pickering works desperately to mediate the escalating battle between MacArthur and President Harry Truman. And somewhere out there, his own daredevil pilot son, Pick, is lost behind enemy lines--and may be lost forever.
Customer Reviews:
The end of a great series!.......2007-07-22
The Corps series is the first series that I have read of W.E.B. Griffin, but it certainly won't be the last. Griffin is a marvellous writer who mixes actual people in with his fictional people. His stories are epics and the plots are larger than life as war so often is. This book is set around the beginning of the Korean War in the latter part of 1950. Most of the action takes place behind the lines in North Korea. Major Ken (Killer) McCoy takes a lead role in this one as he mounts a series of behind-the-lines surveillance teams. Their main job is to monitor the Chinese border to determine whether of not the Red Chinese are going to enter the war. We have a lot of the original characters from World War II such as General Fleming Pickering, Colonel Ed Banning, Major Malcom Pickering and Master Gunnery Sergeant Zimmerman, as well as some new names and people. The book is so realistic that it took my breath away. I am very sorry to reach the end of this stupendous series. I will next tackle The Badge of Honor series. If I get half as much enjoyment out of that as I did with this one, I will be happy.
'The Corps' Series.......2007-07-19
While I am enjoying Griffin's new 'Presidential' series, I just re-read his 'The Corps' series from beginning to end, and I really think that there is room for a couple of more books there. _Retreat, Hell!_ ended with the birth of the McCoy's son and the Chinese have just entered the Korean War. What happened to his characters next? What about Vietnam and the CIA in the 1950s? The 1960s?
HUSBAND'S RESPONSE.......2007-01-11
iT WAS AN ORDER FOR MY HUSBAND AND THE LAST BOOK IN THE SERIES THAT HE HAD NOT READ AND COULDN'T
FIND SO IT WAS GREAT.
I Surrendered!.......2007-01-04
Having struggled through about half of Retreat, Hell, I surrendered to the boring plot, weak character development and lack of action and gave up reading it. The jacket cover made me feel that I was going to be in for a real treat. However, I was misled and can sum my feelings up about this book in one acronym...NATO... no action, talk only. Rather than providing a good mix of action and military history, Retreat, Hell is so filled with minutiae that it overwhelms any of the very few and far between parts that are (at best) moderately exciting. Do yourself a favor and sjip this book.
hell in a handbasket.......2006-08-16
W.E.B. Griffin's novelistic account of the Korean Conflict in 1950 teaches even as it entertains. Douglas Macarthur - who is still revered as the hero his president wouldn't listen to by many South Koreans - is primed for glory, but has to deny the massive Chinese presence that awaits his troops if he's going to get there.
Enter Ken McCoy, your basic straight-talking grunt who sees clearly, shoots when he has to, and wins the day. Sort of.
Not a brilliant literary piece, if that's what you need. But a colorful introduction to the no-win drama of the Korean Conflict and some of its key players, not to mention an interesting insight into the psychology of the Corps when its civilian and military masters wander off the beaten track.

It is the fall of 1950. The Marines have made a pivotal breakthrough at Inchon, but a roller coaster awaits them. The bit in his teeth, Douglas MacArthur is intent on surging across the 38th parallel toward the Yalu River, where he is certain no Chinese are waiting for him, while Major Ken McCoy, operating undercover, hears a different story entirely, and is just as intent on nailing down the truth before it is too late. Meanwhile, Brigadier General Fleming Pickering, shuttling between two continents, works desperately to mediate the escalating battle between MacArthur and President Harry Truman, while trying to keep his mind from the cold fact that somewhere out there, his own daredevil pilot son, Pick, is lost behind enemy lines - and may be lost forever.

Book Description
When the Americans entered the First World War in 1917, they brought with them a sense of fighting spirit and courage which left an unforgettable impression on their war-weary allies. Martin Marix Evans' superb book brings vividly to life the full story of the American Expeditionary Force which helped to turn the tide of war in France.

not too bad.......2003-05-10
Wilson wasn't in the Marines so there seems to be a resultant lack of overblown USMC rhetoric, which is refreshing. He gives a tepid overview of the campaign, but admittedly this is very difficult to do. There could have been more focus on the US Army units involved, but what little he does provide is even-handed and not bogus unlike a couple of other books on Chosin. The title, though, regurgitates the old fable of "Retreat, Hell! We're simply attacking in another direction", which Marine General O.P. Smith admits he never uttered (He was much too understated and professional).
A Good Read and Introduction.......2002-04-02
I really enjoyed this book, and found it to be a good introduction to the topic. It's a fairly quick read, and the writing flows quite well. My only major complaint is the lack of maps! (I know they cost more to produce, but honestly a book detailing military operations NEEDS maps!) This book would have received a higher rating from me if it included maps!
Retreat Hell.......2001-12-05
Very good book on the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Although it didn't have as much emotional impact or are as personal as the other books on the subject, it does give a broader picture of the campaign by displaying a great amount of information on operational details and chronology as well as the background to the campaign. It is a recommended read for anyone who is interested in at least getting a idea of what the campaign was about.
Very Interesting.......2001-03-14
This book was very interesting. I've noticed that some of the events/outcomes of events in this book differ from those mentioned in Breakout by Martin Russ. Pictures and maps would have been helpful in reading the book. Overall, an interesting read, especially since it's from the viewpoint of the Marines who were there.
Retreat Hell!.......2000-09-29
I own the book. I have yet to read it. But skimming it, I noticed that that author Wilson doesn't know the difference between the "First Marine Division" and the "1st Marines". The "1st Marines" applies to the 1st Marine Regiment, one of the 4 regiments that comprised (i.e., and also today comprise the 1st Marine Division)- the other regiments being the 5th and the 7th Marines (infantry), and the 11th Marines (artillery). It is evident that Wilson wasn't a Marine. It is clear that when he says "1st Marines", he means "First Marine Division", which was the Marine unit that distinguished itself in the famous Chosin campaign in Korea in 1950. As a former Marine myself, I think that I'd find this error disconcerting during the read. Who knows... there might be other errors, omissions, etc.; not just nomenclature but also events, etc. And if Wilson paid someone to edit his book, he should ask for his money back. Shoddy research.

Bestselling author Jessica Fletcher travels to California's wine country for rest and relaxation. What she finds is an old Hollywood friend, dead from an apparent suicide-and a vintage crop of enemies who suggest to Jessica that something's rotten in Napa Valley.
Customer Reviews:
Jessica is forgetful.......2005-03-09
This was a decent book in the series. However, Jessica seems to be a mite forgetful. One of the characters says he's "had a few bouts with a bad back myself." Jessica says, "Fortunately, I never have." Excuse me? She is forgetting the time she was in bed because of a bad back in season 3's episode of "Crossed Up." Not to mention various other times throughout the series. Or is Donald Bain not familiar with "Murder She Wrote"? I have noticed inconsistencies in other MSW books also. I will keep reading these books as I enjoy Jessica's adventures but sometimes glaring mistakes devalue the quality of a story.
Okay........2003-11-10
This book seemed worse than most MSW novels. The characters that Jessica meets are one-dimensional and boring. This book also says what might happen to Jessica and George Sutherland relationship-wise.
Sour Grapes?.......2003-08-11
I love Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain's Murder She Wrote series of novels, but this one seemed to be in bad taste. The motivations of some of the characters seemed a bit sordid. It wasn't the kind of thing I would want Jessica mixed up in. When the denouement revealed what had gone on behind the scenes, it left a bad taste in my mouth. It definitely wasn't a nice cozy.
Not bad, but not the best.......2002-08-26
I love the Jessica Fletcher mystery books, but this one just didn't seem right some times.
The characterization of Jessica just seemed off. There seemed to be an arrogance about her (and George Sutherland) that I found unappealing and not in keeping with either the televison program or other books in the series.
George Sutherland is given a very large role in this mystery, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But at times, Jessica seemed more like his assistant than the star of the book.
There was also a poorly done scene at a spa. I kept thinking about how much more intersting it would have been if Jessica had done one of her "addle brained old woman" or "rich snob" acts to get the information she needed rather than the direct approach used by the author. Even without going that route, I think the whole scene could have been handled much better. One of the things that I always liked about the character was that she never completely loses her cool. This particular scene just did not ring true to me.
There is also a revelation near the end of the book that seems to come from out of nowhere. I think there was a definite need for some foreshadowing prior to this.
On the postive side, the book is engaging and easy to read. If it were not part of the Murder She Wrote series, I think I would have liked it more. It just doesn't seem like Jessica to me.
A Good Vintage Mystery.......2001-04-15
Blood on the Vine is just the kind of book you want to read on a rainy afternoon. Donald Bain presents a cozy puzzle with all the right sort of villains to keep the reader entertained. The setting in California wine country was a wonderful vacation from the Maine winters. So vivid the descriptions I could almost taste the wine. Including Jessica's friend the Scotland inspector brought a light touch of romance to the plot. I think this is one of the best in an enjoyable series. I recommend it it to all of Jessica Fletcher's fans

Dragon Pawns.......2005-06-25
I got to read this book before it was ever published, and I must say I was surprised at how good it is! I loved it, it keeps you entertained and it's very suspenseful. I would recommend this book to any fantasy readers, because this is a must-read.
Book Description
"Balance good with evil's stain, Lest dark wizard's powers reign. Every hap shall come aright, When Dragon's Pawn is Keeper's Knight. Let in tiny sparks of day, Free those who are wizard's prey, Web of universe shine bright, Turn the Darkness into Light."
Jarl had gotten his riddle from a kindly, grandmotherly sort of which. But friendly or not, she'd told him pretty firmly he had to solve it if he was to become a hero who could fight off evil and find his way home to earth. She didn't warn him, however, that this very riddle would also lead him into the most bizzare adventures imaginable - and that he would soon find himself contending with ogres, bandits, talking trees, and the dark minions of the Shadowlord himself... Customer Reviews:
AN EXCELLENT READ FROM A DOCTOR KNOWN FOR WISE HEALTH PRACTICES.......2006-04-08
IN A NUTSHELL:
"Optimum Health" by Stephen Sinatra, M.D., is an very readable examination of our western lifestyle in search of the root causes of some of the most persistent and problematic ailments we face. Dr. Sinatra analyzes, with the use of empirical evidence and recent medical research, some of the ways that specific behaviorial factors may cause or prevent health problems in humans. More importantly, he outlines what steps we can take to help insure better health for ourselves. Most importantly these are steps we can take without major expenses are changes that are difficult to maintain.
BUT -- FORTUNATELY THERE IS MORE -- LOTS MORE:
LIKE MANY OF DR. SINATRA'S BOOKS MUCH IS MADE ABOUT FOOD!
We are what we eat, and Dr. Sinatra never seems to lose sight of that fact. In many of his books, including this one, he details a healthy diet, though in this book he explains why it is healthy more than in some of his other volumes, which leads him into a discussion of Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and supplements and more.
Dr. Sinatra takes hold of specific issues, like "good fat" and "bad fat", and makes a chapter about it, clarifying the 'whats-what' about fats -- very critical to our health that we understand this stuff. He also suggests specific modifications in diet, excercise and specific nutrition, that may have health benefits, without sacrifice.
VITAMINS - MINERALS - CO-ENZYME Q10 - AMINO ACIDS - HERBS - :
The above are just a few examples of the types of topics that are examined with specific applications to our better health in mind. It is particularly satisfying to get this type of information and advice from a cardiologist trained in western allopathic medicine, just like most doctors in this country. In essence, if Dr. Sinatra can utilize 'blended medicine' in his pr
Dr. Sinatra delves into the means by which specific ailments, such as arthritis, heart disease, high cholesterol and others, can be treated with foods, nutritional supplements and a change in diet. He also includes a lucid description of Vitamins, Minerals and other supplements, from the standpoint of their use for maintaining or improving human health.
BOTTOM LINE:
Real good stuff and easily read and enjoyed by almost anybody. Dr. Sinatra has written a number books in the field that include, "Naturally lowering your blood pressure - in just 6 weeks" , and others. I have read, "How To Lower Your Blood Pressure In 6 Weeks" - and it has helped me to safely utilize some non-drug alternatives to augment the extensive use of anti-hypertension drugs that I have lived with for decades. This book is similar, but it has a much broader focus, making it more important and useful to a greater number of people.
How to stay healthy and live longer........2002-10-31
Dr. Stephen Sinatra is a board-certified cardiologist who has thoroughly researched the true causes of the diseases which plague modern Americans, including various forms of heart disease plus cancer and various degenerative diseases. He has discovered that most of these diseases are caused by faulty eating habits and lack of certain essential nutrients. This excellent book discusses these and other factors in highly-readable terms. If you read this book and implement the simple factors which it recommends you can improve your health and add healthy years to your life. That seems very worthwhile to me. I hope that it does to you too.
