Book Description

Embarrassed after their night of passion, Jo hopes to never see Kelly Sambino again, especially when friends warn her of Kelly's reputation as a runaround. When fall classes begin, Jo is as surprised as anyone to find Kelly has been hired to teach at the same college. She denies the attraction and refuses to be swayed by Kelly's considerable charm, vowing never to repeat her summer indiscretion. Kelly insists she is not the womanizer others claim. She pursues Jo, breaking down her resistance and professing her love, only to have her reputation come between them again. In a moment of need, Jo turns to Kelly, accepting the physical comfort Kelly offers, while still denying her own heart . . . denying the love that has grown between them.

3 out of 5 stars Cute but Tiresome.......2007-06-12

I have read more lesbian fiction than I care to admit. One Summer Night was certainly not the worst of the bunch, nor was it the best. I am not sorry I read it, nor would I have been sorry I bought it (my girlfriend actually made the purchase).

I found the last 40 or so pages of the book to be tiresome. It was the same old back-and-forth, will they or won't they that every romance novel incorporates to an extent. The trouble was that I feel like Hill ran out of things to say and so she dragged out the ending with the on-again, off-again. It got old. When it came to the actual end of the book, it felt rushed to me.

Still, I found the characters to be enjoyable, the scenarios realistic, and it was a quick, easy read.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love a Jock!.......2006-07-31

Johanna Marshall finally caves in and goes to watch her friends play in a softball tournament. Her friends have brought in a ringer, which is ringing all of Johanna's bells.

Kelley Sambino knows she's ringing Johanna's bells, but can't seem to get close to her. If it wasn't bad enough Kelley has a reputation of being a womanizer, but as the fall semester starts, she finds herself working in the same department as Johanna at the college.

Pick up the book and walk the hall of a romantic academia.

2 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2006-07-14

Romantic story of how Jo hesitates to get into a relationship with a steamy young woman whose feelings for her are more than Jo can manage. I found the story a little slow and "going around in circles": repetitions of how Jo was hurt by her ex Nancy, how she is lonely, has very few friends, and keeps rejecting a persistent Kelly. Not the best lesbian love story out there.

4 out of 5 stars Clearly Hill's First Effort.......2006-04-17

Johanna was betrayed by her lover three years before this story begins. She has strenously guarded her heart since then - telling herself that she was content, even happy. Then, one summer night, she met and fell for Kelly only to be told that Kelly is a womanizer much like the woman who hurt her so badly.

While the characters in this book both teach college, one is a jock, the other not. How they come together is the theme of this story.

The plotting on this book is thin - paper thin. But the characters, even the secondary characters, are people the reader would like to know. But after a while, you just want to shake Johanna and tell her to get over herself or find a counselor to help her resolve her fears.

Hill has the talent to bring her setting - almost a character in itself - to life for the reader - in her descriptions of the heat of an Austin, Texas summer, you can almost feel the sweat beginning to form on your forehead. She can also bring you to tears in her descriptions of a dying relative.

If you're new to Hill's books, do start with this one - you'll have the enjoyment of watching Hill's talents grow with each new book so that by the time you get to, say, The Killing Room, she will knock your socks off. But regardless of where you start, do not judge this writer by her early books.

4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2006-03-08

I loved this book for #1:the two women in this book were actual lesbians(there was no I sleep with my bf until I met you, and now I only sleep with chicks) and #2:It was a good romance.I liked the love scenes in this book(all except the one on P.185) and I liked how Jo was afraid to have feelings Kelly but Kelly still stuck by her and didn't leave.

5 out of 5 stars A captivating dream.......2004-08-15

Kruesi does a wonderful job describing each character's feelings in detail. From the first sentence i found myself captivated and yearing to read more about Laurel. Throughout the book you route for laurel and dane to get over their differences. From the fantastic descriptions i found it very easy to loose myself while reading and envision myself being laurel. After finishing the book i often found myself thinging about it, every page seeming as real as a dream.

5 out of 5 stars For all lovers of a modern Midsummer Night's Dream.......2002-03-27

Upon finding herself on the threshold of adulthood, 21-year-old Laurel Carrington realizes that she doesn't know anything about herself, except that she doesn't want to continue in the path laid out for her by her scientific father and long-time boyfriend. When she receives a letter from a famous painter known for her mystycism and elusiveness, she does the first impulsive action in her life and moves to Fallingstar, Vermont to find herself.
This book is a wonderful story mixing fantasy and contemporary romance, interweaving each character with mystical quirks and qualities set to a magnificent setting of fairy-laden woods and misty mountains. The main characters of Laurel and Maybelle Starr practically dance off the page, each complimenting and changing the other for the better. Laurel slowly emerges from her restrictive scientific cocoon to realize the magic and wonder of nature and fantasy, while Maybelle becomes more human upon deciding to share a secret she has kept for 21 years.
The romance between Dane Walden and Laurel is rocky, yet satisfying as it evolves from suspicion to wonder, as each changes and delves into the fairy tale writing itself around them.
For anyone who is a fan of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," this is the book for you, full of mischief, love, wonder and delight in the human spirit and the magic that can only be found in the land of the fey.

5 out of 5 stars A very relaxing and wonderful book.......2001-12-03

Reading this book was a wonderful experience for me. I love fantasy and I love romance. When the two combined in this story of Laurel, a young woman trying to find herself, I was in for a very good read. I was so into reading it that I couldn't put it down till I finished it. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good read filled with fantasy, and a love story that leaves you wondering what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Magic.......2001-06-29

Mary Alice Kreusi is my favorite author of romances with a fairytale twist. With her lush description of the physical setting and the characters emotions, I found myself drawn into the fairytale and completely believing it. I loved this book as much as I enjoyed her first. I hope her next book is published soon.

3 out of 5 stars Writing too "flowery".......2001-06-09

The story is good, but the writing is so overly descriptive and "flowery" that I would get tired of it, and try to skip ahead to when something was actually happening. This book could have easily been half as long without leaving out anything of importance at all.

Modesty Blaise's friend Novikov died trying to preserve his discovery of the Impossible Virgin, a secret that meant enormous wealth. But right at the last moment, he babbled. When Modesty makes a forced landing in Central Africa she meets the man who possesses Novikov's secret without knowing it-Giles Pennyfeather, the guileless and blundering young doctor with a gift for healing. In saving Giles from Brunel, a dangerous killer, she buys yet another ticket to danger, for Brunel is determined to have the secret. Modesty and her lieutenant, Willie Garvin, take on Brunel and his partners in a fierce and devious battle, where Modesty is brought to the most shattering reverse she has ever suffered. How she fights back, and at last learns the truth of the Impossible Virgin and her ferocious guardians, brings this fifth tale in the saga of Modesty Blaise to an astonishing climax.

Tarrant is involved with a spy case that is supposed to be dodgy, but an underling kept a record. Modesty wants to know what to get him for his birthday, and Fraser brings up this fact.

A novel approach to safecracking provides a present. However, they are drawn deeper in by a brainwashed albino girl, and an emotionless crimelord.

Not much happens after that, Willie thrown from a plane with no parachute, Modesty locked in a cage with a gorilla, surviving drugs and torture, as does her doctor boyfriend. Throw in an appendectomy, and a deadly quaterstaff one to many duel in the crotch of the Impossible Virgin.

Shouldn't forget a novel use for birdguano, either.
O'Donnell comes up with another outre excursion for our super ex-criminals.

4 out of 5 stars "She could not let Brunel see her break. For Willie's sake she could not do that.".......2006-04-28

I love the Modesty Blaise series of books, but this book is not one of my favorites. In fact, my feelings about "The Impossible Virgin" are mainly colored by my opinion that this book (the fifth in the series) marks the beginning of the decline of the series.

In many ways "The Impossible Virgin" is a typical Modesty Blaise story. There is a bad guy (Brunel) and he has some nasty henchmen (Adrian Chance and Jacko Muktar). Modesty has a run-in with the henchmen in Africa and defeats them. Later, Modesty and Willie Garvin (Modesty's loyal side-kick) outwit the bad guys once again, this time in London.

But then the plot thickens, and Modesty finds herself captured, taken back to Africa and subjected to brainwashing. I can't tell more without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read the book. It's very exciting and the plot includes many unexpected twists, more than average for a Modesty story.

The positive aspects that I love about the Modesty Blaise books are all present. The interesting relationship between Modesty and Willie, the intelligent and humorous tone and the deadly seriousness when it comes down to the life-and-death combat encounters. The bad guys are really nasty, the story is quite inventive and the descriptions of the locations sound authentic (although dated). The fighting scenes are unusual and memorable, especially an encounter near the end of the book where firearms are not viable and quarterstaffs are used against 10 attackers with machetes.

My biggest problem with "The Impossible Virgin" is that several of the plot elements are simply too unrealistic. Unfortunately, I can't go into detail without getting this review labeled as a spoiler. I also had minor problems with Willie's behavior vis-?-vis a certain young lady with emotional problems, Dr. Giles Pennyfeather (a major character) being so silly and the ending of the book being so sugar-sweet.

Despite my reservations, and the fact that this book is now 35 years old, I recommend it highly. It's still much better than most modern action thrillers.

                  Rennie Petersen

4 out of 5 stars Seduction of the Innocent.......2001-06-10

The good doctor Giles Pennyfeather is introduced in this tale. He is a good-natured medical embarrassment who is hopeless in the modern world but who can perform medical miracles in Third World environments. Modesty's plane drops out of the sky and she finds herself stranded at Gile's makeshift hospital in the middle of Central Africa, so she makes herself useful as his nurse. Unfortunately, the local criminal element muscles Giles out of the area under Modesty's watch, and Modesty doesn't let her friends get ruffled without a fight. Willie joins the odd couple and they all do battle against guerillas, a gorilla and Mother Nature. All of this leads to the immense fortune known as The Impossible Virgin, the specifics of which I will leave to the honorable Peter O'Donnell. Another smashing success for Modesty Blaise!

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 Stars: Superb story, sloppy execution.......2007-02-13

This is the first Huggins's book I've read. After reading about him for years, I finally decided to dive in and see what all the fuss was about.

Well, I was both impressed and disappointed.

First I'll get the disappointments out of the way. The writing was quite sloppy. I can't even count how many times a sentence started with And or But. I know this is acceptable and I agree: when used correctly it can add great tension to the writing. In this case, however, it did not. The use of the conjunction at the beginning of the sentence is supposed to add surprise, make a strong point, give the sentence greater meaning, etc. When it is used nearly every other paragraph and in some cases back to back to back, it just becomes tiring and weak.

Also, the almost constant use of ellipsis (. . .) is irritating. After seeing them so many times, I just gave up trying to apply them to the scene or dialogue they were supposed to strengthen.

Finally, the repetition of words--such as blood. I know Huggins values a simple hand off from writer to reader, and describing blood as a crimson flow of life-producing liquid could damper the scene. Equally dampening is a non-creative use of the same word again and again. It looses potency and the reader feels cheated, like the author didn't take enough time to edit the book so it flowed smoothly.

With concerns to the writing, this felt like a first, and very rough draft to me. I don't doubt that Huggins can write better than this--maybe this was just too rushed.

Okay, on to the praise. The mere fact that even after all this ranting I still give the book 3 1/2 stars is testament to the power of the story. Tourists visiting an abbey hidden in the mountains and becoming stranded by a snowstorm then hunted by a monster sounds like great fun! Throw in a centuries old warrior who like big guns and swords and is almost superhuman--now we're cookin'! Yes, the story was thrilling and at times very creative and unique. It's a shame that the writing couldn't stand up to it.

Had the story been weak, I probably would've left Huggins's other books on the shelf. However, the story was great and I plan to read his new offering: Sorcerer.

Pros: Great story, fast paced, 2 out of 10 characters are interesting. Exciting action. The trips to back Calvary make the book very meaningful.
Cons: Very poorly written. Choppy and sometimes hard to follow even though the story is very basic. Huggins needs to hire an editor to fix all the mistakes or at least a good friend that'll proof read it first. The many fight scenes get confusing so you have to read them without trying to figure them out, especially the fight in the stairwell. Made my head spin trying to figure out where all the characters were. Many characters are shallow at best and then they just disappear from the story altogether.

I'm not sure I'll ever pick up another Huggins book but maybe he's improved since Nightbringer. I sure hope so. I'd hate to see such a good story idea go to waste on such poor writing.

4 out of 5 stars Surpise find and greatly enjoyed.......2006-07-25

I was on the way to check out at a small book store when the cover art caught my eye. The book had been left on a table by another customer or I'd never have discovered it. I don't think I have EVER browsed "religious fiction" in my life! But what a find! The book is a quick read - much because of the unusually large font, but mainly because it is action packed!
The author tells a tale weaving together the stuff of legend, history, nightmares and the Christian religion in a very entertaining plot line. I was not thrilled with the character of Gina(female FBI agent) but did like the way he softened her character by adding her two young children to the mix of innocent people trapped through a snow storm in an ancient monestary with an evil force more ancient than the abbey itself. I found the story so intriguing, that I plan to dig into the notion of the Nephilim (half human half demon figures who supposedly are the legend behind Goliath and things that go bump in the night). Cassius was a familiar character - the centurion who speared Christ on the cross to prove his death thus healed of coming blindness when Christ's blood spilled onto his face. He appears here as a Christian himself - a believer who suffers through the guilt of his participaption in the crucifixtion and wages an eternal battle against the evil Nephilim.

While I didn't find the author's writing to have the same polish that would earn it 5 stars -I enjoyed it enough to finally locate the religious fiction section and to pick up another of his books!

                      3 out of 5 stars Far-fetched but Fun.......2006-06-06

Nightbringer is the sort of dumb, mindless fun that makes for a good "beach read". It's pretty fast paced, and won't take you long to get through. Just turn off your higher-thinking faculties and enjoy the ride.

The premise of the story is that a group of tourists is trapped in an old, isolated monastery by a blizzard. Much to their chagrin, they discover that an ancient evil is lurking there. It turns out that the Nephilim, giant half-man half-demon beings from Bible times, are still stalking the earth. Fortunately for our protagonists, they are accompanied by a fearless warrior who has hunted this sort of creature before...

Huggins keeps the story flowing, and he knows how to write intense action scenes. Some of the fighting does get repetitive, however.

I wish Huggins had explained a bit more about the Nephilim; for example, we're told that they reproduce, but not how. Are there female Nephilim? It's implied that younger Nephilim are less pure and therefore less powerful, so do they reproduce with ordinary humans? Also, one of the characters states that Goliath was a Nephilim. If this is so, then how could David kill him with a single stone, whereas the people in the story pepper them with automatic weapons to virtually no effect? By the way, Goliath was probably between nine and ten feet tall, not thirteen as one of the characters states.

Overall an exciting thriller, but it definitely requires a major suspension of disbelief.

2 out of 5 stars Only for Huggins fans.......2006-02-10

This is James Byron Huggins' worse book. If you're a Huggins fan, then buy it. However, if you are not, try reading some of his other books such as Cain, Hunter (perhaps his best) or the Reckoning. Huggins is a great author, just as good as James Rollins, but this book seemed rushed and uninspired. Luckily, Huggins just releases Scam and Socerer is coming out soon.

3 out of 5 stars Cthulhian-type story, interesting plot and decent execution.......2007-01-08

This is a decent story, involving an effort by heretics and xenos to awaken an ancient (really ancient, 60,000,000 years) evil which would consume the galaxy if allowed.

Writing is a bit comical or even worse in places, after a while I assume a career soldier (uriel) with over 100 years of active-duty service would get over (or get killed by) such silly notions such as (uriel)"knowing that nothing can stand before the righteous fire of a starship sanctified by the Emperor himself." (page 243) Never mind that the emperor had been stuck in the golden throne 7000 years when the ship in question was built and was not in a position to sanctify anything except maybe the astronomicon. In fact, in this novel the Ultramarines (mainly Uriel) are the most one-dimensional characters, with the most interesting being maybe Taloun or the planetary governor, neither of which get much screen time. The inquisitor seemed a bit shallow as well but was certainly more entertaining that the ongoing mantras and theocratic chants of the astartes and the arbites.

Looking past the characterization issues, it is an entertaining story.

Some people have been confused as to the order they should read these novels. I was one of those and I would have really appreciated someone to tell me which book to start with.

Ok here it is: 1)Nightbringer, 2)Warriors of Ultramar, 3)Storm of Iron, 4)Dead Sky.

Read them in this order. Note that Storm of Iron are about the forces of Chaos, but the final book combines both forces, and if you don't read about the events and people in Storm of Iron, you will likely be confused in the final book, Dead Sky.

They are all good; Nightbringer and Warriors of Ultramar were my favorites. Be prepared for disturbing scenes of violence. Hey these are stories of brutal war. What do you expect? Not for the squeamish.

5 out of 5 stars Great Start To A New Series.......2006-06-21

NIGHTBRINGER is a fantastic book. I'm not a huge fan of the Space Marines but this is not a just a Smurf novel. It has Necrons, Inquisitors and Smurfs. There are some good twists and turns that are unexpected. This book actually made me care for the Smurfs and Captain Ventris.

There was good treatment of the Necrons & the C'Tan - nothing that would violate the given fluff from the Necron Codex.

Overall, a very good book & well worth the read. I can't wait to read the rest of the series: Warriors of Ultramar; Storm of Iron; Dead Sky, Black Sun.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book from any angle.......2005-09-29

The Warhammer40k universe just got a whole lot more interesting than it already was. From start to finish this was a good book.
Which starts with a promtoed ultramarines captain setn on a simple misson. This mission as it would turn out isn't all that simple. On the planet of Pavonis there is more than meeets the eye. this book has an amazing plot and a nice twist right in the middle, making it a good book to get even if you don't like warhammer 40k universe. But it isn't for people who can't handle reading a book with violence in it.

I recomend this book to anyone 13 or older espeacially if your a warhammer 40k fan like me.

If you are new to the Warhhamer 40k universe, or an old vet, like myself, you will love NIGHTBRINGER. It is action packed and not for the faint of heart. The twist in the middle will have you wanting the Heretics blood. The Mack Review gives this book a perfect, 5 out of 5. I can only hope that sequel WARRIORS OF ULTAMAR is just as good.
