As readers who have enjoyed his appearances in original paperbacks already know, Harlan Coben's former professional basketball star Myron Bolitar is not your everyday testosterone-enriched jock. Myron is a mild-mannered guy who drinks chocolate soda and until very recently lived at home with his parents in suburban New Jersey. In his hardcover debut, we find Myron sharing a New York apartment with his longtime lady friend, writer Jessica Culver, and still running MB SportsReps, where he ostensibly manages the careers of other athletes, but really spends most of his time playing private eye. The arrival in Myron's life of rising pro basketball star Brenda Slaughter seriously tests his commitment to Jessica, who is in Hollywood working on a movie. It seems that Brenda's father Horace--Myron's old coach--has disappeared, and Brenda is receiving death threats that might involve a gangster family's plans for a new female professional basketball league. Or the threats might have something to do with Brenda's mother's connection to a wealthy New Jersey political family. Myron and his banker friend Win, a preppy with a penchant for violence, are more than enough to double-team the bad guys. Previous Myron Bolitar games in paperback include Backspin, Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, and Fade Away.

Book Description

She's smart, beautiful, and she doesn't need a man to look after her. But sports agent Myron Bolitar has come into her life—big time. Now Myron's next move may be his last—

Twenty years before, Brenda's mother deserted her. And just as Brenda is making it to the top of the women's pro basketball world, her father disappears too. A big-time New York sports agent with a foundering love life, Myron has a professional interest in Brenda. Then a personal one. But between them isn't just the difference in their backgrounds or the color of their skin. Between them is a chasm of corruption and lies, a vicious young mafioso on the make, and one secret that some people are dying to keep—and others are killing to protect....

4 out of 5 stars Good Audio Escapism.......2007-09-02

Myron Bolitar mysteries are fast-paced, violent, well-plotted whodunits, starring a sports agent (Myron) with shady CIA past and usually involving sports celebrities. This offering is no exception. Myron takes on the representation and protection of a budding black basketball star, Brenda Slaughter. Immediately he finds himself on the wrong side of one of New Jersey's most prominent and ruthless families, the Bradfords. The plot thickens when Brenda's father disappears after contacting the most prominent member of the Bradford family, Arthur, who is running for governor of New Jersey.

It makes a good audio book. The narrator, Jonathan Marosz, does a good variety of voices and paces the novel well. I enjoyed listening to it and will probably sample some additional audio installments in the series when the craving for fast-moving detective fiction next calls me.

5 out of 5 stars A great book!!.......2007-08-23

4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-08-19

I really enjoy the Myron Bolitar sport agent crime novels. I loved this novel. First of all, let me say that you need to read this series in order because it slowly reveals different aspects of the characters. The mystery in this one isn't the best one so far. However, I give it a higher rating for the progression of the characters in the big picture. I didn't like that Mr. Coben had another basketball player in this one. I was looking for him to jump to another sport like he has in the past. I felt we didn't get to know the new lead character, Brenda Slaughter that well. I thought we would get more dialogue with her and Myron so we could truly see what was going on. I again loved the interactions between Myron and Win. I really enjoy the Win character in this series. I think he lends a mysterious aspect to it. I would highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a quick read and a book with numerous twists.

5 out of 5 stars Another in the Myron Bolitar Series.......2007-06-26

Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his style and ability and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

It's been a while since an accident ended Myron Bolitar's sporting career, but he is now making quite a success of being a sports agent.. He has plenty of contacts and it keeps him around many of the sports stars he competed against. Life is good and he is doing just fine, that is until he meets Brenda Slaughter, one of the hottest female sports stars around. She is one hell of a looker, funny and single and as luck would have it seems to have mislaid her agent.

But when her father disappears and Mob start to lean on her, it soon becomes apparent that potent forces are at work and Myron is soon plunged into a world of deceit and death. Hopefully it won't be his own.

Spoilers!

This is one of my favorite books in the Myron Bolitar series, because our wise-cracking hero is finally starting to move forward with his life. Dropping Jessica as a crutch, coming to terms with his relationship to Win, making Esperanza a partner in his business...and oh yeah, there is a pretty compelling murder mystery in the book too, with a plot twist that will blow you away.

Coben's dialogue is top-notch, and though I doubt too many people have the relationship that Win and Myron share in real life, their character interaction is always compelling. Brenda is an interesting new character to add to the series, and I found myself truly shocked in the end, when I realized her appearance would be brief.

This story makes you realize that the 'bad guy' is not always some nefarious serial-killer, rogue assassin, or other cliche evil-doer. Evil comes in all sizes and packages, and we are disillusioned right along with Myron when he discovers the depths that 'normal' people can sink to.

Book Description

Melanie Starks and her seventeen-year-old son, Charlie have been running one con job or another for as long as she can remember. Worried about Charlie, though, Melanie is ready to start over. Then her brother, Jared, reappears in her life.

Released on a technicality, Jared Barnett is just out of prison and feeling more invincible than ever. He has the perfect plan to rob a local Nebraska bank, but he needs Melanie's and Charlie's help. Feeling that she owes the brother who saved her from an unspeakably violent childhood, Melanie agrees to Jared's plan.

But within seconds, shots are fired and Jared and Charlie run out of the bank. They are empty-handed and four people are dead. When they refuse to tell her what happened in those few desperate moments, Melanie realizes her brother and son have formed a silent bond. And now they are all on the run from the police, taking a hostage with them and willing to do anything to survive.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good story.......2007-09-30

I think I liked this stand alone by Kava better than the Maggie O'Dell books. The story was intriguing and without a "main" character the author could create a compelling tale.

5 out of 5 stars ONE FALSE MOVE.......2007-01-10

I am very pleased with this new book by Alex Kava that I have added to my collection. I love Nebraska authors and in my opinion she ranks right up there with Bess Streeter Aldrich....

5 out of 5 stars Not Revolutionary, Just Good.......2006-09-26

Alex Kava's first free-standing suspense novel freely adapts from the author's personal experience, adding on elements of the Charles Starkweather murder spree, to create a story of violence and confusion on a sprawl across Nebraska that harkens back to the bleak despair of Terrence Malick's "Badlands" and Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska."

Jared Barnett, freed from Death Row by a crooked lawyer and a coerced testimony, teams with his sister, a small-time con woman, and her son, a professional shoplifter. They arrange to rob a bank to pay off Jared's debts, but when shots are fired and four people are left for dead, they sprint for the country. Crime novelist Andrew Kane has isolated himself at Platte River State Park, trying to kick-start his newest novel, but his isolation turns on him when the three killers stumble on his nest and take him hostage.

Platte River State Park is real, as is the Nebraska Bank of Commerce branch the killers mishandle, and the towns of Auburn and Hastings, where key moments of the plot take place. It's disconcerting to think that I may have slept in the cabin where Andrew Kane was taken hostage. The novel clips along at a short pace, with scenes so cinematic that I can almost see the blackouts and the camera pulling focus. By releasing hints of the characters' past in measured amounts and making us wonder where their loyalties lie, Alex Kava keeps the pages turning to the end.

There's nothing really new or revolutionary in this novel. It's probably not a classic of the genre. But it is well-paced, intriguing, peopled with interesting characters, and a cracking good read. Good airport reading or something to keep in your desk for your coffee breaks, this novel is a worthwhile investment for fans of suspense fiction.

2 out of 5 stars Will Pass the Time but Nothing Memorable.......2006-03-15

Kava has written a novel with a pretty evil main villain, Jared who was let off on a technicality from death row. He is accompanied by some limited intelligence followers being his sister Melanie and nephew Charlie who after a bungled bank robbery flee across the middle states of America. Successful author with a serious injury to his collar bone, Andrew Kane is taken hostage by the bumbling trio and Melanie soon realises nothing will stop the bloodthirsty rampage of her brother. Even worse he son seems to be following in his footsteps.

Nothing spectacular happens in One False Move, what inside has been done quite regularly before and the ending is extremely predictable but if you get this book for a really cheap price in a second hand bookstore or for free from the library it will pass the time.

4 out of 5 stars One False Move - Surprising.......2006-01-11

While starting out as a cheap mystery, this book grows on you as it goes along, building to a real page turner with cliffhangers in nearly every short chapter. While I like more complete novels with finely crafted sentences and long descriptive terms about the setting or history of an area, this novel (without those qualities) is a decent selection for "Nebraska Reads" as our novel to read and discuss during 2006. Alex Kava is an Omaha author and it was interesting reading a book set in the area in which I live. Definitely worth reading!

                  Book Description

Long live the Queen! A magnificent Queen Elizabeth I reigned in the movie Shakespeare in Love, but it is the younger queen of the film Elizabeth whom we meet in Fiona Buckley's acclaimed Ursula Blanchard mystery series.

It's 1562 and Catholic Spain threatens the stability of Protestant England. In France, the Protestant Huguenots also face threats from the powerful Catholics. Fearing that such pro-Catholic movements might spread to England, Elizabeth hopes to mediate a peace between the two French factions.

Enter Ursula Blanchard, twenty-seven-year-old Lady of the Presence Chamber, who has a special mandate from Sir William Cecil, Secretary of State, to spy on behalf of the queen. Nearly the same age as Elizabeth, Ursula has already proved herself worthy of the queen's gratitude in difficult and dangerous situations.

The queen wants Ursula to go to France, where civil war may break out at any moment, to hand-carry a letter from Elizabeth to France's queen mother and regent, Catherine de Médicis. To keep her mission secret, Ursula will ostensibly accompany her former father-in-law, Luke Blanchard, a man she neither likes nor trusts, when he travels to France to fetch his young ward, Helene, to the safety of England.

Ursula has the queen's protection and she has with her her faithful servants Brockley and Dale. But she soon realizes that sinister forces threaten her. Is someone trying to prevent her from delivering the letter? Whom can she trust? Luke Blanchard? Helene? Her servants? Anthony Jenkinson, the blithe merchant adventurer whose path crosses hers and who has enemies of his own? Can she be sure even of the queen? What will happen to Meg, her little daughter left behind in England, if she fails to return?

Perhaps the most poignant of all, Ursula's second husband, Matthew, a Frenchman and an enemy of Elizabeth, is somewhere in France, but can she see him without bringing disaster on both of them? There is powerful chemistry between them but what is their destiny?

Ursula soon learns that she faces an enemy who will stop at nothing -- not murder, not torture, not charges of heresy that may lead to burning at the stake -- to destroy her. To prevail, she must undertake a desperate new mission of her own, with an innocent life at risk.

Murder, treason, treasure, passion -- they all combine to make a compelling historical mystery from an author whose vast knowledge of the period adds depth and color to this riveting new series.

                  Download Description

The third book in Fiona Buckley's acclaimed historical mystery series, begun in To Shield the Queen and The Doublet Affair, brilliantly transports readers to the 1560s, and to the court of twenty-eight-year-old Elizabeth. Here Lady-in-Waiting Ursula Blanchard has a mandate from the Secretary of State to spy on behalf of the Queen. Although she has already proven herself worthy of the Queen's gratitude, Ursula now must travel to France, where civil war may break out at any moment, to hand-carry a letter from Elizabeth to the Queen Mother and Regent, Catherine. The mission to mediate peace between warring Protestant and Catholic French factions seems clear, but there are hidden forces at work. Whom can Ursula trust? What will happen to her daughter if she fails? And what are the chances -- and consequences -- of a reunion with her second husband, a Frenchman and enemy of Elizabeth's? This tale of murder, treason, treasure, and passion effortlessly and accurately conveys the high tension of the court of young Queen Elizabeth I.

                  5 out of 5 stars Queen's Ramsom.......2006-06-29

I have enjoyed all of Fiona Buckley books (Mystery at Queen Elizabeth I's Court series).

3 out of 5 stars Very uneven in quality.......2002-11-19

I had liked the first couple of books in this series - on the plus side, these are very rich in their historical content. They could qualify as historical novels in addition to mysteries. This novel contains some wonderful story-telling, which is almost enough to make me overlook some of the doubtful plotting. The "Ransom" part of this book seems almost perversely written for the express purpose of being anachronistic - in the author's eagerness to show how democratic Ursula, the protagonist is, she also makes her rather naively simple and open. Ursula is supposed to be a shrewd woman and a clever secret agent.

The main problem is with Ursula. She is a little too contemporary. I can understand her chafing at the restrictions on women during this period, but she does not try deal with them in an intelligent, realistic way.

The rest of the review is something of a spoiler, so you may want to skip it if you haven't read the book.

What has really ended my interest in this series is her on-again, off-again interest in her second husband. Even today I would find her vacillating incredibly selfish - if she isn't going to work on her marriage, why didn't she work harder to end it by an annullment!

In its time period, it's even worse - she can't fly off somewhere and get a quickie divorce if she changes her mind. Initially, she & Matthew were very attracted to one another, but he forced her into marriage, thinking that he was doing her a favor; she fled. I could understand if she never wanted to see him again, but now that she has voluntarily gone to live with him, there is no hope of an annullment. What does she mean that she hasn't decided if she is going to stay with her husband? Does it seem likely that this 16th century man is going to tamely let her leave after all this, particularly given that he might not be able to end the marriage and remarry? This book portrays Matthew in a particularly favorable light, and I find myself thinking that he deserves better than Ursula.

Not a series that I'll continue with.

5 out of 5 stars Fiona Buckley-A True Diva of Historical Mysteries.......2001-10-15

Fiona Buckley's third Ursula Blanchard/de la Roche mystery was a facinating read. The plot was complex, realistic, imaginative, smart, and VERY well-written. I found Ursula to be both a femanist and one overtaken by femanine emotions, a devious antogonist and angelic protagonist, a sage soul in desperate need of guidance. There were parts of this book in which I was laughing. At other parts, I felt like crying. I have perchased this book and urge any lover of a good historical mystery to do so also. The setting is vibrant and well-reasearched, the characters are well-written, the plot is realistic to a facinating degree, and the overall book is a true page-turner. Five stars isn't nearly enough to praise "A Queen's Ransom". Fiona Buckley is a true diva not only of historical mysteries, but of writing in general. She is a creative force to be reconned with.

                  2 out of 5 stars So disappointed.......2001-08-20

The second book in this series was so imaginative that this one was a real letdown. A problem in many historical novels (call this a mystery, I cannot) is that the characters act too contemporary for the time period. I would have preferred that to Ursula's turning in to a "Had I But Known" gothic heroine. And what's with the missing two years at the end? I'll probably never know because I certainly won't be looking for any future entries in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Another compelling look at the intrigues of court........2000-05-30

This is an outstanding mystery series for lovers of historical fiction, and although this entry may lack the punch of the first two (there seemed to be too few real surprises) the book is still a worthwhile read. The mystery is solid and interesting, the characters are complex, and the description of time and place is unbeatable.

Best of all, Fiona Buckley is an extremely good writer, a true pleasure to read. Unfortunately, Scribner's proofreaders seem to be letting her down--I noticed several typos (including a "teh" in place of "the"). Spell-check, anyone?

4 out of 5 stars Perfect rainy day read.......2007-07-10

I'm a big fan of Anthony, though I admit I stopped reading the Xanth series somewhere around book 24. I prefer stand-alone sci-fi and this delivers. I'll admit freely that the characters are sometimes a bit shallow and one-dimensional, but the characters are not the main focus of Anthony's lavish talent - they come second to the end-of-the-world disaster that has propelled them together.

I will also add that the characters' dysfunctionality enhances the story because here is evolution seen in a new light: in this book, the "survival of the fittest" adage is applied to the group as a whole, not to any one individual. Each individual has a potentially fatal weakness, but the group works together as a whole to overcome these weaknesses. It's a fascinating departure from standard-fare survival fiction, where the heroes and heroines are often able to crush small boulders easily and leap over tall buildings in a single bound. ;)

I highly recommend this book for a rainy day read.

                  2 out of 5 stars Interesting Idea...but not one of Anthony's best.......2005-05-31

The idea behind this story is an interesting one, but you can tell this is his first novel. The idea is that a large comet(s) are exploded and diverted in such a way as to bring some additional rain to Earth. The ill conceived plan goes drastically wrong, and the earth is once again deluged with non-stop rain. Cilivization and the environment break down, and Anthony's band of misfits - being led by a man with a vision in a Winnebago - try to survive.
If you are a die hard Anthony fan, you should read this to help you understand his evolution as a writer. If not a die hard fan, you may want to avoid this one and try some of his other Sci-fi - like his Orn, Omnivore, and Ox trilogy, or Kirlian Quest Series.

                  4 out of 5 stars A weekend warrior.......2004-07-08

I read this book when I was 15, on a rainy weekend in Florida. The book was a bit far fetched but most novels by Piers Anthony are. I was thrilled to find the book 13 years later on Amazon.com. I loved the book and have often thought what if the rain did not stop? Piers Anthony opened my mind to what changes could happen in a chaotic explosion of evolution, whom is fit to survive? what does it take to be the fittest? The Darwins of the world can rejoice! A Definite read for the thrill seekers that seeks to challenge their mind through a writers evolutionary fantasy.

                  1 out of 5 stars Pure trash.......2004-04-12

I had a feeling going into this novel that it would be kind of trashy, but I am a sucker for apocalyptic/end-of-the-world stories, so I thought I'd read it anyway.

                  Bad, bad idea.

The writing is incredibly juvenille and amateurish (I cringed at how Anthony abuses the poor exclamation point), yet the content is often very adult and gruesome and not something I would recommend to young readers. The only remotely likeable characters are killed off and I just wanted to slap some sense into the rest of them. A rather nasty misogynistic thread runs through the entire piece as well. Parts of the story that could have been interesting are glossed over or rendered entirely unbelievable by the way they are presented. I honestly can't believe that crap like this could have gotten professionally published.

Don't waste your time or money on this one.

1 out of 5 stars He can never make up for the pain this book caused me........2002-07-18

Man, this book was bad. I mean BAD. I don't know what the other reviewers were reading, but this was just...I have no words.

Why did I pick it up? Piers Anthony supposedly can write a decent standalone novel, I really liked the early books in all his adult series, I am fond of "end of the world" stories...the book was thin. I had hope. That was my fatal mistake.

All six people are dysfunctional - Zera is whiny, annoying and takes forever to catch on. Gus is pathetic - hydrophobic, lazy, lacking in social skills and constantly leering at the women. Gordan/Gloria is another fine example of Anthony's misogyny - Gloria is only good at girly things, Gordon is great at manly things. By the end of the book, I hated them all and hoped they'd just die.

The interactions between all of them are immature and in many places, just plain unrealistic. The storyline was dull and uninteresting, the ending, disappointing, and the writing was very clunky and amateurish.

There is no better source of up-to-date material on global warming and climate change.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The heat-trapping property of these gases is undisputed although uncertainties exist about exactly how earth's climate responds to them. Energy from the sun drives the earth's weather and climate, and heats the earth's surface; in turn, the earth radiates energy back into space. Atmospheric greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases) trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse. Without this natural "greenhouse effect," temperatures would be much lower than they are now, and life as known today would not be possible. Instead, thanks to greenhouse gases, the earth's average temperature is a more hospitable 60°F. However, problems may arise when the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases increases. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased nearly 30%, methane concentrations have more than doubled, and nitrous oxide concentrations have risen by about 15%. These increases have enhanced the heat-trapping capability of the earth's atmosphere. Sulfate aerosols, a common air po

From the time of the ancient Greeks until the 19th century, European explorers imagined that beyond the ring of ice that encircled the Arctic lay a warm, calm sea that would take them to the Orient. Instead of this easy Northwest Passage, notes Peter Stark, those explorers found what the Inuit and Eskimo inhabitants of the region knew they would: "ice, ice, and more ice."

In this well-chosen anthology, Stark offers a documentary history of changing views of the Arctic over the last two and a half centuries. His collection begins with the words of Georg Wilhelm Steller (for whom many Arctic animal species are named), who accompanied the star-crossed Danish explorer Vitus Bering across the far northern Pacific. The memoirs of other explorers follow, intermingled with prose and poetry from the indigenous peoples of the region. Most of those explorers, like the unfortunate American surveyor Adolphus Greely and the Italian aviator Umberto Nobile, recount wrong decisions taken in the face of horrendous circumstances, whether howling gales or the madness of companions. Few of their stories end happily, save that their narrators usually survived. The closing pages of Stark's anthology are given over to a new kind of explorer, the literary naturalist, whose greatest exemplar is Barry Lopez (Arctic Dreams).

Students of the history of exploration and the peoples of the Arctic will find Stark's book to be an engaging survey. --Gregory McNamee

                                  Book Description

Well into the nineteenth century Arctic explorers believed that they needed only to smash their ships through a ring of ice circling the top of the globe and from there they could tack easily on soft breezes to the North Pole. Acting on this belief, these adventurers were crushed by ice, wasted by scurvy, and frozen to death on the ice floes. This European notion of the Arctic as a ring surrounding a void not only lured countless sailors to their deaths but also had the effect of drowning out the voices and visions of the native Arctic people. Now this vibrant collection celebrates both the unheard voices of the Arctic peoples and the trail of words left by the Europeans who pushed forward to fill the hole in their knowledge of the world. Spanning the years from 1741 to the present, Ring of Ice presents many such works, including the story of Captain Tyson and his crew who, marooned by their own shipmates, were forced to float precariously on a tiny iceberg for five months before being rescued. And the tale of Duncan Pryde, a fur-trader employed by Hudson's Bay Company, who finds himself unwittingly caught up in the Inuit tradition of wife exchange. Juxtaposed with these European tales are stories of survival, skill, and daily life among the Eskimos, as told through dozens of native poems and legends as well as by some of today's most promising writers, including Finn Lynge and Rachel A. Qitsualik. Enriched by the writings of Richard K. Nelson, Gretel Ehrlich, Barry Lopez, Sir John Franklin, and classics such as Gontran de Poncins' Kabloona and Adolphus Greely's Three Years of Arctic Service, Ring of Ice is a comprehensive and altogether unique anthology representing the colorful history that pervades this monochromatic landscape. 5 out of 5 stars Impacted my life - truly inspiring.......2005-01-10

Though I read it several years ago, the impact of this book is still with me. It helps me appreciate the life I have, and inspires me to push harder. The human tales in this book, many culled from actual diary or journal entries, are more gripping than perhaps any fiction I've ever read. If you feel you need a sense of perspective, this is one healthy dose. Reading it was a great way to transport myself from my day to day troubles and experience, again often firsthand, a completely different life situation. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Ice.......2002-02-02

If you are intrigued by the allure that the Arctic has for some people, or are yourself unable to resist subzero weather at the top of the world, then Ring of Ice is a must. Stark has collected a truly diverse range of stories beginning with the comedy of errors endured by Georg Wilhelm Stellar, the German-born scientist aboard Vitus Bering's 1741 Russian expedition to the North American coast, and ending with the luminous prose of modern Artic explorers such as Barry Lopez.

Stark's informative introductions to each essay are both helpful and amusing. He has also sought to balance the primarily European writers and their points of view with those of the native Inuit people by preceding each essay with an Inuit poem. "The poems emphasize the Inuit ethic of sharing, egalitarianism, and incessant hunting, as well as the simple joys and fears of life." They are, of course, in sharp contrast to the accounts of the European explorers, who sought to conquer rather than work with nature, and usually perished as a result.

The book is divided into 4 sections (called books), but the progression of pieces is linear. The 1998 piece entitled "Tale of a Hunter's Daughter," is so pignantly written and captures the feeling of both the land and the woman struggling to make her way in it, that it is worth the price of the whole book. Of course there are other stand-outs, including "How Dr.Hayes Learned to Love Seal Blubber," "Nansen Strolls Farthest North," and "Cold Oceans: By Sea Kayak to Greenland."

Oddly enough, the poetry, which I thought was an excellent idea, is made inaccessible and difficult to read by the fact that it has been set in a script font that is too small to read comfortably. As a result, your eyes naturally gravitate towards the correctly sized, regular fonts used in the essays. This is really strange, given the time and effort that obviously went into the rest of the book, and I hope that Stark has made a very loud stink. It's hard to make yourself work at reading the poetry, which by its nature takes a little bit of work to appreciate. Otherwise a fine collection.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2001-05-24

This is a wonderful book! Peter Stark has selected an extraordinary collection of vignettes from a wide range of original writings about the Arctic and its explorers. I've read many (but certainly not all) of his sources in their entirety, and enjoyed re-reading extracts of those that I have read before as much as I enjoyed reading for the first time those that were new to me. Stark has a fine eye, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Arctic and a gift for weaving together these many tales into a fine, telling tapestry of Arctic adventure. Terrific!

5 out of 5 stars For any collection covering world exploration.......2001-02-20

Over the last two centuries expeditions have penetrated the Arctic and brought back important information - if they returned at all. This provides true stories of Arctic exploration and adventure, presenting the journals, letters and firsthand experiences of the explorers and natives of the region alike. An excellent addition for any collection covering world exploration.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on miscarriage!.......2007-09-30

I had a recent miscarriage and the information in this book was the best that I could find. I read many other books and none were as helpful as this one. It gives you the latest information on causes, prevention and your emotions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has had a miscarriage.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Trying to Figure Out Recurrent Losses!.......2007-07-10

This might be a little too much if you've suffered only 1 m/c. However, after experiencing recurrent miscarriages, it has been extremely informative! It's definitely worth the money to read it!

It was a nice mixture of stories from women who have been through miscarriage and sceintific data.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but needs updated.......2006-06-29

This book is good, but doesn't answer many of my questions. I have had 2 miscarriages and this book did give me some info on what may have gone wrong. But, it really needs updated since it was written in the early 90's. There are some more testing that can be done now that isn't mentioned.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2006-06-06

No doubt if you have suffered a miscarriage, you scoured the net for information and answers. Preventing Miscarriage does repeat alot of what can be found on the net but also offers other interesting information and statistics. I certainly found this book a help when looking for answers.
