"People come to my door-too many of them really-and knock to tell me Notes of a Dirty Old Man turns them on. A bum off the road brings in a gypsy and his wife and we talk. . . drink half the night. A long distance operator from Newburgh, N.Y. sends me money. She wants me to give up drinking beer and to eat well. I hear from a madman who calls himself 'King Arthur' and lives on Vine Street in Hollywood and wants to help me write my column. A doctor comes to my door: 'I read your column and think I can help you. I used to be a psychiatrist.' I send him away. . ."

Bukowski was a drunk genius........2007-05-31
"Notes of a Dirty Old Man" is a haphazard, unfortunately redundant and angry collection of rants by an undeniably gifted writer and poet. Bukowski heaves his heavy bagful of words off his back in an angry plop--then deserts that bag entirely in favor of the bottle, leaving whatever shards of "spirit" within to be stirred in with the silt.
If you like, or can weather, reading about masturbating with a phone mouthpiece or killing someone with a typewriter, you've met your match. Why do I give this a two if I find it so disgusting? Well, Bukowski is a genius. The angry bitter mumbling of a madman sometimes subsides away and into the madness of spirit and beauty. (Strangely, I don't doubt the cutesy family film "Angels In the Outfield" was jacked from this collection. There have been stranger things, but not many.) He sums it up well in these clarified, aching words: "...all the hard poems; he'd played hard-man all his life but he was soft. everybody was soft, really--the hard was only there to protect the soft."
I think he tried to shake his audience off him like a bad hangover. If that's what he was trying to do, he did a good job of it.
Living it straight up.......2005-06-23
This is the one that made me think Bukowski wasn't just another pretentious scruffy looking poet-writer. And the impression it made on me was inestimable. It was the same reaction I had when I read those other `notes' from that other 'sky, the man himself, Fyodor Dostoevsky.
It was a shock to know that there were other people in the world who had thoughts like mine... that life was mixed, nothing was cut and dried, muddled, beauty was touched with horror, love was tainted with hate and other passions that would sometimes lead to actual murder and that it wasn't that bull shown in the movies, society wasn't as rational and good as I was told, that there was always something awful under the surface of things, that God could be dead, that I was full of contradictions and instincts which had the power to overtake me -and perhaps the whole of humanity was afflicted with the same inconsistent nature, that there seem to be no meaning to life (with or without religion) and the universe was a blind absurdity, everything shocked me, and on and on... but in the center of all this was the fact that I was living, that I had the ability to feel and the power to say no.
The world seen through Bukowski's eyes is a terrible and beautiful place at the same time. The whores, the drinking binges, the alley fights and the insanity of the man of the streets is a life lived at its most direct and extreme. It is life uncluttered by the niceties and civilities of the numbed life most of us, under the confines of comfy blankets, PC's, cell phones, the latest fashions, million channel TV, etc., lead. It is a life I myself experienced for twenty five years, and at times it is still a preferable life to me than the desensitizing one I may live today. So in a sense Bukowski `celebrates' life and not wholly -wholly- leaves us a portrait of self destruction and nihilism. This is a POSSIBLE life, he seems to say to me, this is a life I've lived and lived it the way I wanted -at least the way I saw fit for a man in my position: ugly, poor, abused, disenfranchised. And I agree.
Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis..........2005-02-05
Hey Charley I'm pregnant
and living on 9th street
Above a dirty bookstore
Off Euclid avenue
I stopped taking dope
I quit drinking whiskey
My old man plays the trombone
And works out at the track
He says that he loves me
Even though its not his baby
He says that he'll raise him up
Like he would his own son
He gave me a ring
That was worn by his mother
And he takes me out dancin
Every saturday night
Hey Charley I think about you
Everytime I pass a fillin' station
On account of all the grease
You used to wear in your hair
I still have that record
Little Anthony and the Imperials
But someone stole my record player
How do you like that?
Hey Charley I almost went crazy
After mario got busted
I went back to Omaha
To live with my folks
Everyone I used to know
Is either dead or in prison
So I came back to Minneapolis
This time I think I'm gonna stay
Hey Charley I think I'm happy
The first time since my accident
Wish I had all the money
We used to spend on dope
I'd buy me a used car lot
I wouldn't sell any of 'em
I'd just drive a different car
Depending on how I feel
Hey Charley for chrissakes
Wanna to know the truth of it?
Don't have a husband
He don't play the trombone
Need to borrow money
To pay this lawyer
And Charley, hey
I'll be eligible for parole
Come valentines day
-Not that anyone would notice, but you sit in your dingy apartment reading this collection, the light coming from a single lamp with no shade, certain thoughts come to mind. You realize many, many things and come to an understanding and an appreciation of things that I think many people either never do, or either are in constant denial of. That's a constant theme with Buk, I think. Hell, I don't know and I'm dam* sure no deep-thinker about such things. But, the bottom line is that Buk, like Tom Waits, can never do wrong. Never. Ignore anyone that says otherwise or tries to come off with some, "Well, this isn't his greatest work..." or the...."this is inferior Buk." That's all absolute garbage and all of those individuals who make such statements - combined - could not produce in a lifetime, anything of such beauty that Buk produced in a day. Period.
Get this, treasure it, cherish it and you will understand.
Not Afraid.......2004-08-09
The first time I read Charles Bukowski it was in Spanish. The words still remain in my mind and once I got the opportunity to read him in English... I was speechless and shocked at how no one ever had dared using the English language like he has... How could you play with words so much and yet make them all fall in place so gracefully?. So crude, yet so insightful. Bukowski can express himself in terms of crap and intellect all in one paragraph. Any of this man's work is worth spending time on. =)
random acts of literary madness.......2003-12-02
Bukowksi worked well when given every writers dream: carte blanche to write whatever he felt like writing, only to have it reproduced by the LA FREE PRESS and on the streets in a week, being read by thousands. Bukowski himself writes of the magical feeling of having the freedom to write whatever he wanted and the sudden notoriety he aquired with his new exposure. This collection of stories, as opposed to the ones collected elsewhere, show Bukowski still experimenting with a variety of forms and these stories contain a marked sense of surrealism and a even a polemical political bent, something which Bukowski usually had little stomach for; he gets in a few good ones at the expense of the false prophets of the 60's countercultural scene, a much needed antidote to the disgusting mythologizing that has always accompanied the free-love generation.

Story Behind the Book
“My novels don’t come to me ahead of time; each book flows off the tips of my fingers as I sit down and begin to ‘feel’ the issues deep inside myself. For me, the most intriguing aspect of my writing style is that I don’t plan and outline the stories. I turn my fingers loose and get inside the characters and instinctively know where I need to go. After all the suspense is said and done, my hope is that each story will give us pause. That in the deepest part of our souls, we’ll embrace the depth of what it means to be believers and then be moved to share its powerful simplicity with those who struggle without hope. I want to take my readers inside my characters’ hearts and minds so they will ‘experience’ just how destructive gossip really is and see that it never accomplishes anything God-honoring, whether or not it’s true.”

a shred of evidence.......2006-11-05
This is a great book on how things that are taken out of context can become so damageing. Gospip can create so many problems. this is a very well written book and keeps you intrigued throughout the story.
interesting thriller.......2005-06-26
Former newspaper editor, Ellen Jones and her husband Guy, a lawyer, have moved into their new home Seaport, Florida. Ellen works on a novel while Guy commutes to Tallahassee to practice law.
At a supermarket Ellen meets two other newcomers depressed and lonely Julie Hamilton and her two years old daughter Sarah Beth. Not long afterward, Ellen is at a diner when she overhears a conversation that accuses Julie's husband Ross of child abuse. Out of fear for the child and the mother Ellen reports what she heard to police chief, who says he will make inquiries. Not feeling that is enough, Ellen investigates Ross. She soon realizes her initial opinion and that of others that he was an abuser seems wrong although he is someone with a shady deadly past as a newspaper article claims he killed two boys, ran over his own son, and is the prime suspect in the disappearance of two missing girls. Ellen fears she waited too long too speak out as Sarah Beth has vanished.
The story line grips readers who will worry that Sarah Beth perhaps has been killed by parental abuse, which overshadows the return of the Baxter series stars Ellen and Guy in the first Seaport saga tale. The story line serves as a reminder not to jump to conclusions especially based on gossip and rumors (mindful of Harriet the Spy). Though the moral message is overly pounded with unnecessary cul de sac sidebars, fans of the Baxter tales will enjoy the relocation of the stars.

Book Description
"McGown's style is uniquely hers, engrossing, poignant, with effectual characterization."
--Mystery News
When the body of fifteen-year-old Natalie Ouspensky is found strangled near a public park in Stansfield, England, Detective Inspector Judy Hill and Detective Chief Inspector Lloyd have their work cut out for them. For Natalie wasn't quite the innocent her mother believes, and her classmates at Oakland School guard Natalie's secrets--and their own--like life itself. Then a shred of evidence points Hill and Lloyd in the right--and decidedly deadly--direction. . . .
"[A ] compelling story . . . The characters are devious, cunning, charming--and truly, truly wicked. This small English town, overrun with malice, is well served by its finely delineated constabulary, with Lloyd and Hill at the top of their form."
--Publishers Weekly

Linley and Havers - a delightful pair of detectives.......2006-11-10
Havers has much more to do in this one, but where Havers is, Linley can't be far behind. They work beautifully in tandem, and this is another fine book.
Another Good Plot with Plenty of Unexpected Twists and Turns.......2003-03-14
Jill McGown's style is quite wonderful! Her books are very carefully plotted and her character development is excellent. In this book we get to see Judy in action. Her careful attentiveness to detail, and her detailed notetaking help her solve this perplexing murder of a schoolgirl. Typical of Ms. McGown there are plenty of twists and we dont' discover the real murder until the very end. In the meantime we the readers have thought it was three or four different people as the plot unfolds. The title of the book is a pun on something quite relevant to the case. Read it and discover Ms McGown's wonderful world in the English midlands.
A pretty good murder mystery........2001-06-11
This book was pretty good. It was well written, the characters are lively, the plot is suspenseful, and it is an easy read. There is a nice twist at the end that will keep you wondering until the very last page. I think this author has some real talent. The story takes place mostly in the teenage world, where lovesick teenagers abound. One in particular has taken her crush on a teacher to a new depth, and another is actually having an affair with a scandalous character that is a teacher as well. When 15 year old Natalie Ouspensky winds up dead, the story unfolds like layers of an onion, peeling away one new twist after another. Natalie's best friend Kim knows something about Natalie that she wants to tell the police, but she has sworn to her friend (now dead) that she won't breathe a word. Without this information, the wrong person may be charged with the murder, and lives ruined as a result. The person I suspected all along turned out to be not the culprit, but every bit as conniving and evil. I think you will enjoy this book.
Intelligent plot, convincing characters.......1999-10-26
Jill McGown has created another masterpiece. She has a unique style, there is a lot of suspense and the way she portrays the different personalities of her characters is fantastic. You will love this book.
A Treadmill of a book.......1998-12-13

Getting it Sideways By Wayne Bonkosky.......2004-02-04
I thoroughly enjoyed this account of the adventures of a man who can talk intelligently about American History and a motorcycle engine in the same breath. He tells of his two year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps that shocked him into manhood and talks about his experiences with recreational drugs in the "60's". I especially enjoyed his adventures with the "Mountaineers" motorcycle club that he has been a member of for many years. This is a memior of an obviously well read introspective man who can write beautiful poetry in one chapter and tell darn good jokes in the next. It's a good read.
getting it sides.......2004-02-04
I really enjoyed reading and going on great adventures with Wayne, He's a very good communicater, and he has lead an interesting life. I especially enjoyed the touching moments when his father says good-bye and why wayne decided that hunting wasn't such great fun.
Written with "good clean fun" zest.......2004-01-17
Getting It Sideways is the personal memoir of Wayne Bonkosky and is a faithful account of his travel, his time spent in the Marine Corps Boot Camp, his life in Germany as an immigrant worker, his twenty-five years of dirt-track motorcycle racing, and a great deal more. Written with the same "good clean fun" zest that the adventurous Wayne Bonkosky brought to his life experiences and opportunities, Getting It Sideways is sometimes humorous, often upbeat, and always reflects the challenges and joys inherent in the uplifting surge of questing for one's passion.

Book Description
Dermatology has made remarkable strides in recent decades, with the advent of high-tech aids such as lasers and cryosurgery and new wonder drugs such as steroids and vitamin A derivatives; thus, many skin sufferers have been cured by their physicians.
Yet many have not. If you have brought your persistent eczema, your stubborn warts, your psoriasis or other distressing skin ailment, or even your recurrent herpes to specialists and superspecialists, and if all the creams, lotions, and medications have failed to help, you must wonder if there is something else -- and ardently hope that there is. This is exactly what Drs. Grossbart and Sherman have addressed in Skin Deep: A Mind/Body Program for Healthy Skin.

A Bunch of Hype.......2007-08-31
If you think you feel bad with eczema, just wait until you read this book! As a life long sufferer from this chronic skin ailment, with episodes coming and going, I am currently suffering from one of the worst episodes I've ever experienced. This book would make any sufferer feel even worse, if they didn't have a good basic core knowledge of the disease and it's symptoms. The authors would have you think that the patient's lack of loving parenting is the cause of your problem, among other of their "causes". The fact that this could not be further from the truth automatically debunks the rest of the "helpful" information in this tome of trival! While relaxation therapies and being aware of one's self are excellent advices no matter what the ailment, to place the blame on the patient's problems on the patient is like blaming a baby for contracting cancer. These authors should be ashamed of themselves. It's true - some people will do anything to see their names in print and sell a few books. Sure wish I would have checked this book out at the library rather than wasting good money on a bunch of hogwash!
A factor in a new direction for my life.......2007-07-05
I checked this book out from the library when I had the most horrible eczema outbreak of my life: sores up and down my arms and legs, peeling of the skin three layers down on my hands. My doctors were useless.
This book was a part of a turning point for my life - reading what it had to say about the psychological origins of skin conditions prompted me to take action that improved my life on all levels.
Practical, informative, and more..........2006-11-10
I was extremely pleased with content and recommendations in Skin Deep. The author is knowledgeable of a variety of skin conditions and their resulting emotional attachments or reactions. For the person needing relief, there is such with numerous relaxation strategies that are actually helpful and can get you started Day 1. I highly recommend this book.
Great Self Help Book.......2006-03-09
Great Self Helf Book which gives you wonderful insights into the emotional factors of your condition. Let's suppose skin conditions are partially genetical, partially caused by wrong food intake, partially caused by external conditions (wheather, dust mites, etc...) and partially caused by emotional/stress factors (some say ALL skin conditions are caused by inner anger). I suggest you take an integral approach to treat your condition and optimize your food intake and do whatever you can about external conditions. This will take the balance of your condition into the right direction. The next step is to explore the emotional/stress factors of your skin condition. That is what this book is great for!
What advantages and safeties does your condition give you? What is the condition doing for you? Why are YOU affected? Why THERE and why NOW? This book provides great methods (a comprehensive list of most common needs the skin is trying to acquire via its condition; great excercises in self-knowledge; creating a Time Line to effectively understand why your skin condition is worse or better at particular moments; why particular places at your body are affected; what it does for you (what safeties and advantages); and let's you think about what if it got better or worse) to explore the emotional cause of your skin condition. This is the first step and understanding will already bring you towards curing of your skin condition! The next part of the book gives techniques to get yourself into a healing state which will give the next boost towards healing. It also outlines what professional help can do for you.
I eventually embraced a hypnotherapist into my healing process. My own condition is moving towards complete recovery (full body eczema). This book is a must read if you want to be cured!
Get this and get better!.......2005-07-16
Whenever my eczema flared up, my friends would tell me I'm too stressed out. I didn't feel that way, not much more stressed out than usual, so the timing of the flare ups and the stress level at that time was sometimes confusing.
After reading this book, however, I recognized it's much more than just the simple stress - more deeply rooted issues I've apparently held for a long time. I had vaguely suspected this may be the case, but didn't know how/where to start. This book gave me the guidance to do that on my own.
I agree with 3 other reviewers completely. I no longer feel helpless and scared when I can feel my skin starting to flare up. I am not yet free from eczema, but knowing what may be the underlying cause of it, and how to calm it down, I have much stronger sense of being in control of my skin, body and my life.
