Easy reading & full of wisdom.......2007-05-27
Everything that the artist never thought about... that's why we're artists, not business-people. Good reading and highly recommended.
Good title with interesting info.......2006-05-20
This book is great to start with and you can really learn valuable information from it along with which path in the music business suits you the best. It is a great guide for a newbie and also for a experienced because everyone has something to learn from this book however the next book you need to read is: "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen which along with this one will give you tips on how to get the best deals and make the most profit from your business. I assure you that if you have these two books you can't fail and your business will keep on growing.
Excellent guide for choosing a career.......2006-05-15
A very up-to-date, modern look at the music industry! This book doesn't just offer one narrow-minded look at the industry. After reading it, you'll be able to make a specific and informed decision about what path you want to take within the business. There are many more job options than you would have imagined! This is one of my favorite books, next to "Music Business & Entertainment Law Contracts for Indie Recording Artist, Labels, Songwriters, Composers, Producers, Managers and All Others in the Record Industry. Preprinted Binder" by Ty Cohen
Provides the latest insights into the industry, which is going through extensive changes.......2006-01-07
The new updated edition of Music Business Handbook And Career Guide provides the latest insights into the industry, which is going through extensive changes. For one, digital downloads and piracy are changing how music itself is available to the public. Online music, iPods, and other computer-based changes are transforming not only how the industry does business, but how it presents products and sells them. Sections on careers include all kinds of options, from managing artists to producing concerts, producing motion picture and TV scores, and more. A focus on all kinds of interactions between artist and producer, record company executive to band, makes Music Business Handbook And Career Guide one of the most comprehensive music business books on the market.

Book Description
Kevin Liles rose from intern to president of Def Jam Records in only nine years. Today, at age thirty-seven, he is executive vice president of the Warner Music Group and has helped discover and direct the careers of stars such as Jay-Z and Ludacris.
Liles' meteoric climb from urban street kid with hip-hop aspirations to one of the most successful and influential executives in the music industry is far more than a rags-to-riches story. It is a tribute to Liles' incredible work ethic, wisdom and confidence in doing his thing his way -- the hip-hop way.
"Every real success story in hip hop comes down to the same thing: someone who finds the will, focus and drive to achieve," Liles writes in Make It Happen: The Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success. "It doesn't matter if you are male or female. It doesn't matter what race or religion you are. It doesn't matter what hustle you choose." What does matter, Liles says, is that you fight against the odds to realize a dream and be the best that you can be. You empower yourself and make it happen.
Kevin Liles presents ten rules of business success, which range from "Find Your Will" and "The Blueprint" to "Don't Let Cash Rule" and "Play Your Position." As he outlines his philosophy, Liles shares how he put his principles to work, chronicling his journey to the top and the stories of others -- executives, artists, mentors and friends -- he has worked with along the way.
Make It Happen is both an American success story and a guidebook for the road to having a career and a life you love.

Would this book be appropriate for middle schoolers?.......2007-04-20
I teach middle school in a diverse setting, and I'm interested in perhaps brining this book into my classroom. Is there any content in it that would be inappropriate for that age group (sexual content, profanity)?
..........2006-12-13
I had been waiting for a success book to be written for the hip hop generation by the hip hop generation, along came Kevin Liles.
Given Kevin's high position in the music industry he was able to give insight from on the hustle it took to get there and the hustles hes observed of others. Might I add that that point in itself, his observation of others hustles, is what saved this book from being an autobiography (that wouldnt be a bad thing anyways).
Normaly I dont like too many stories in success books but Kevin is definitly the exception. From lessons learned playing Guts with Lebron James to that reasoning behind his reaction to Dame Dash barking on him on the infamous scene of The HardKnock Life Tour.
The one thing I like about this book also is that it wasnt all about getting money. It wasnt materialistic as most success books. Work hard, play hard seems to be able to sum up his philosophy.
The principles and attitudes Kevin shares arent simply for someone hoping to make it big in music either, they can be applied in anywhere.
A good read and full of insight.......2006-03-30
I was surprised I bought this book but wasnt disappointed when I did. It is not something I'd generally think I would enjoy but Kevin tells an interesting story and one worth reading. He takes you inside his culture and it is an eye opening journey that I am glad I took. His tips we've heard before but bear repeating and overall the message is a really good one. I enjoyed this and you will too.
hip-hop generation guide to success.......2006-03-22
Great book. I give it out to my clients. Excellent for young adults trying to find appropriate direction and alternatives for their lives and future. Liles makes one realize that with hard work, one can make a difference for themselves. The only complaint is that I wish he would write a book of guidance for teens with more simplistic language so that it can be read by various grade levels.
GREAT BOOK..........2006-03-11
I was skeptical at first, thinking that it was another book in which the author boasts about how great they are. That said, I was proven wrong, (which goes to show, you CAN'T judge a book by it's cover). I wish that I had a book like this when I was younger, one that illustrated exactly how one should embrace their career.
Mr. Liles was definitely a go-getter who made his own destiny happen. Throughout his journey, Kevin illustrates his determination to learn the business; he lived and breathed hip-hop, it is something he has to be a part of. You get to see and understand his success as well as what he considers his blunders (which are minimal)and the lessons he learned in making them. All while climbing to the top of Def Jam Records.
I suggest that if you are looking for a gift for that up and coming graduate (High Schooler, College Grad), especially one who seems to be heading toward the creative path, I would purchase this book for them. I stand corrected, I would purchase this book for anyone who clearly wants to understand what it takes to get to the top (whether it's through a company if not their own business).

Best book ever.......2007-08-06
Really easy to read, gives a fantastic broad view over the music industry. The author writes it like it is and he gives us information straight and clear, gives practical advice and the book is FUN to read. Buy it or regret it forever!!
Informative, essential.......2007-06-17
A very important work for musicians written by someone who hates to see people get screwed. This book reads easy and is comprehensive.
Great!.......2006-12-16
Well, I read this book cover to cover. It's a definite must read for the serious musician who wants to learn about the music business and how it works. The music business is pretty confusing but this book is written in a way that is completely understandable. It has a lot of information such as music publishing, legal topics, and agreements. It also has Q&A sections from Henry Rollins, Fred Croshal (Maverick Records) and Neil Gillis (VP of A&R at Warner/Chappel Music). Bobby Borg was my instructor and I know he knows his stuff. The music industry is an arcane language, but this book makes everything easy to understand. Everyone in our class was happy to be able to study of off such a book. Buy it! it's worth it.
Good learning tool.......2006-02-27
I found this book very helpful. It broke down the material step by step and gave great examples. I think anybody entering into any aspect of the music industry should read this book!
THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERY SERIOUS MUSICIAN!!!.......2006-02-26
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a SERIOUS musician or if you are truly serious about being in the entertainment business! I bought this book at the TAXI Music Convention in Hollywood, California after sitting through one of Bobby Borg's seminars. I thought to myself why not buy it and read it after all that is why I attended the Music Conference in the first place: to expand my knowledge about the music industry! That is exactly what this book does! In fact I like this book so much I bought 4 extra copies for my bandmates and a couple other people that I work with in the entertainment industry. This book is very easy to read and has tons of useful information in it. Once again if you are SERIOUS about being in the Music Industry you owe it to yourself to read this! Trust me you WON'T be disappointed!

The BIBLE of the Music Industry!.......1999-04-14
I bought this book about 2 months ago. I am a young entrepreneur who's trying to start a record label. When I went to the bookstore, this book was referred to me. I skimmed through the book for a minute, and could'nt put it down!! There is'nt an area of music or the music business that this book does'nt cover. David Baskerville is a wizard. He gives sample contracts, documents, agreements, etc. in this book to show you what artists, producers, publishers, etc. sign when entering the business. This book has photos of major musical events and important people in today and yesterday's music industry. It is the BIBLE of the music industry. Pick it up!!

music is a business.......2007-01-13
As hard as it is to put artist and business person in the same body, anyone who wants to succeed as a musician must at least try. This book is a comprehensive and practical resource to use. I would use it, however, in conjunction with other resources that can provide complementary information and updates on how the music business is changing today.
excellent novel!.......2006-05-27
great if you are looking for a career in the music industry get it if you are looking to get notice get ty cohens"The New Music Industry: How to Use the Power of the Internet to Multiply Your Industry Exposure, Fan Base and Income Potential Online! "
Great book.......2006-05-16
This is a very good overview of jobs within the music industry. However, it rarely goes into the amount of detail I would like it to. If you're just trying to find a career that sounds interesting then I would suggest this book. But if you're looking for an in-depth guide, this is not the place to be. Check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen.
Excellent!.......2004-03-08
I had this as a textbook in my Intro to Music Industry Studies at college. It gives you all the basic aspects of the music industry, including jobs, marketing and a bunch of other stuff. It doesn't go into great depth so if you're wanting a more detailed view of how the music industry works I suggest that you try to find another book to buy separately or go along with this. It includes all of the basic terms necessary for the business of recording, marketing, merchandising, etc.

Life on this Weird Planet.......2007-07-13
Calvin and Hobbes has always been a great read. This was the first one in book form that I read and thoroughly enjoyed.
The book has many good strips and quite a lot of Sunday strips as well. The aliens show up towards the end and there is a good many strips on that series where he explores the Martian surface and rightly is told by Hobbes that if one is not potty trained would you invite them to your home? So of course after damaging Earth, men need not expect a welcome from the Martians or anyone else.
There is a lot of wisdom and good humour in the book. The opening splash page itself is attractive about why intelligent life hasn't contacted us - with a picture of deforestation.
Other favourites are of course being a tiger, or the tiger's welcome to the kid coming home from school, Dad's approval ratings in the election, the family outing, room service for the ill kid, etc.
The parents are delightfully tolerant of the crazy nutty Calvin. The family outing to the woods is a riot. Calvin wonders what kind of vacation is it if he has to be with his parents, LOLz. Even Calvin's vulnerability is explored when he panics after breaking Dad's binoculars.
This book is cute as hell - and especially a great gift to pretty young girls who thank me endless for making their day. You won't ever be disappointed, probably not with any Calvin & Hobbes collection - they are a gem, a treasure, a laugh riot, a piece of modern art and culture.
Beware of Captain Spiff, the T-Rex, the paleontologist, the incredible comic strip from the best graphic art has to offer.
Laugh after Laugh.......2007-01-05
I am a Calvin and Hobbes fan. And this book did not dissapoint me.
One of my favorites.......2006-10-19
I love all Calvin and Hobbes books, but this collection has a few of my favorites that never cease to make me laugh out loud, including:
"The Disembodied Hand That Strangled People" (I snicker just writing it)
The trip to Mars ("We're going in the wagon?" "Of course! What did YOU want to do? Flap your arms?" "I guess I hadn't thought about that part."
"Obviously."
May Calvin never grow up!.......2006-07-29
Calvin is the kind of child that we all dread when they are a child and would admire and pay money for when they are an adult. His life and the life of his parents are summed up in the cartoon on page 77 when Calvin says, "Golly, I'd hate to have a kid like me." He is destructive, uncooperative, mean to his parents and extremely imaginative. Clearly, if he were to ever grow up, the quality of the entertainment that he would produce would be outstanding.
Fortunately, Calvin and his stuffed Tiger friend Hobbs are cartoon characters so they don't have to grow up. Cartoonist Watterson can keep them this age as long as he wants so that we can continue to be entertained by their antics. This collection of cartoons is funny, imaginative and is an exaggerated view of the life of a child. There is no question in my mind that Watterson was an imaginative child and probably got in a lot of serious trouble during that time. We should be grateful for that, as he grew up to be an outstanding cartoonist and this book is an existence proof of that.
bed time favorite.......2006-03-22
I really enjoy these drawings! Simple but so touching!
It does to philosophy what high intellectual speculating cannot achieve: touch your hearth with the reality of everyday living. A treat every night before falling asleep!
European drawings are certainly known the world over as masterly executed cartoons; but here, in Bill Watterson's series of Calvin and Hobbes, the American's sense of humour express itself by reaching the intellectual and the down to earth feeling! It brings back memories of childhood and fundamental questions adults rarely take the time to ponder, even for themselves! Five stars for this delectable reading!

Customer Reviews:
C&H FTW.......2007-09-12
If you love C&H, you'll like this book. For me, Calvin is like pepperoni pizza... when it's good, it's really good, and when it's bad, it's still good.
More Calvin.......2006-10-19
This book combines material from both Yukon Ho! and Weirdos From Another Planet!. Perfect to read with a blanket and a cup of tea on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It lifts my spirits up and makes me laugh, even when there's no one around. Really, that could be said about any Calvin and Hobbes book, though!
The creator is a God........2004-11-03
Unfortunately, I say it rather cynically.
My, there are so many monsters peopling this strip. The kid's a monster. His parents are monsters. The tiger's a monster. The teacher's a monster. The babysitter's a monster. And the only character who's not a monster (and more of a victim) is naturally enough, a young girl who is never bad or gets into any trouble. And the strip, while a rugrat's fantasyland, also smacks of extreme adolescent rebellion.
The strip is so overrated even after its demise a decade ago that it's been ensured that no cartoonist alive or yet to be born would ever create a strip as well-worshipped as it is for all eternity to come. So why not just remove the whole comic section from the news for good?
A walk through someone else's imagination.......2004-07-25
Calvin is a beam of light, a dinosaur, Spaceman Spiff, a pollster on the election of new parents, a robotic explorer from Jupiter (in search of chocoloate) -- well lots of things. He's all the best and all the worst a boy about five can be, and that covers a lot of ground.
If the others around him never quite see things Calvin's way, that's really not his problem. Hobbes will always understand, and generally offer some understated commentary on events. I prefer not to say too much about Hobbes. It's really best if you let him introduce himself.
This book is a treasury of daily and sunday color strips. It captures a part of one of the best strip comics ever. If you already know C&H, you'll surely want this collection. If you missed the strip when it was still in the papers, this will give you a wonderful introduction.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood, and Calvin offers his for your enjoyment.
//wiredweird
Another anthology of laughter.......2004-05-30
Whether the collection is the "Indispensible" or "Essential" or "Quintessential" Calvin and Hobbes, it doesn't really matter. Watching this hyperactive, hyperimaginative child and his willing though wise accomplice, Hobbes, take on evil babysitters, Susie Derkins, the class bully and all creatures (real or imaginary), is a pleasure and laughter without stop. "The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes" is another in a long list of the great comic work of Bill Watterson. This is an indispensible/essential/quintessential collection for all Calvin and Hobbes and humor fans!
Book Description
Drawing on her peripatetic childhood as the daughter of a travelling salesman, and her adult residence in one of Atlanta's seedier crack neighbourhoods, columnist and NPR commentator Hollis Gillespie has assembled a comic, poignant memoir about her life, starring her unusual family and her crazy friends.
NPR commentator Hollis Gillespie's outrageously funny–and equally heartbreaking–collection of autobiographical tales chronicles her journey through self–reckoning and the worst neighbourhoods in Atlanta in search of a home she can call her own. The daughter of a missile scientist and an alcoholic travelling trailer salesman, Gillespie was nine before she realized not everybody's mother made bombs, and thirty before she realized it was possible to live in one place longer than a six–month lease allows. Supporting her are the social outcasts she calls her best friends: Daniel, a talented and eccentric artist; Grant, who makes his living peddling folk art by a denounced nun who paints plywood signs with twisted evangelical sayings; and Lary, who often, out of compassion, offers to shoot her like a lame horse.
Hollis's friends help her battle the mess of obstacles that stand in her way–including her warped childhood, in which her parents moved her and her siblings around the country like carnival barkers, chasing missile–building contracts and other whimsies, such as her father's dream to patent and sell door–to–door the world's most wondrous key–chain. A past like this will make you doubt you'll ever have a future, much less roots. Miraculously, though, Gillespie manages to plant exactly that: roots, as wrested and dubious as they are.
As Gillespie says, "Life is too damn short to remain trapped in your own Alcatraz." Follow her on this wickedly funny journey as she manages to escape again and again.
Customer Reviews:
By and far one of the the most amazing autobiographies EVER.......2006-11-28
I couldn't put this book down for the 2.5 weeks it took for me to finish it-- I've read lots of biographies and autobiographies, but hardly any of them ever captivated me the way that Hollis' twisted madcap humor and sarcasm filled outlook on her own life experiences did. Some of the instances I can't relate to at all or simply can't imagine it, other ones I related to perfectly...though I bet with these book sales she indeed has found her own true home after all, truly making it all poetic justice.
okay, till i read the author's thank yous.......2006-02-09

You GO, Girl!!!.......2005-11-05
Hollis Gillespie is a modern-day...I can't even come up with a comparison. She is hysterical, and above all things, honest; at times, poignant, painful. The books are essay format, much like her column in Atlanta's Creative Loafing: collections of musings, incidents, and anecdotes from her colorful life. Her books celebrate life, friendship, and dysfunction, out loud, in the midst of cold, hard reality, as if to say: Everybody is broken, but somehow, if you find the pieces of yourself in other broken people out there in the Big World, you'll still be dysfunctional, but you just might be all right.
Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch, the psuedonym by which she is known in her edgy, crack neighborhood (the price was right), is about finding her place in the world, and buying her first home in an up-and-coming (although not nearly fast enough) intown neighborhood in South Atlanta. She introduces her best friends, Grant, Lary, and Daniel, and relates their eccentric misadventures and relationships. She is brutally honest about her itinerant past, the broken dreams and dysfunction of her parents, an alcoholic traveling trailer salesman (Dad) and a bomb-building rocket scientist/hippie artist (Mom), who carted her and her siblings all over the world. In Atlanta, as an adult, she finds family in her collection of misfit friends, settles down, buys her first home...and continues her outrageous tales of life in her second book, Confessions of a Recovering Slut & Other Love Stories. (Buy them together!)

not very funny.......2005-11-01
I bought this book on an enthusiastic recommendation. What a mistake. It has a few amusing vignettes, but overall is not very funny. A lot of rambling blurbs about some guys named Larry and Grant. She never explained who these guys were, or what their roles were. The writing is very poor--she rarely comes up with the right word. She doesn't write complete stories, just word images. So often my response to a section was "okay and then what?". Please, David Sedaris she isn't. Take a close look before you buy.
Dynamic! Hollis will leap off the page at you!.......2005-10-18
Gillespie packs a serious punch with her very short (only a few pages) essays, each of which is accompanied by a small picture of Gillespie in wacky sunglasses or a zany pose. She's transcended the medium of the book to jump out and ingrain her larger-than-life image in the reader's mind, and the style works.
Despite what the title says, Gillespie doesn't confine her tales to one particular bad neighborhood. Her anecdotes take the reader around the world, and if you can handle this bleachy-haired honky bitch, you are in for a real treat!
