Book Description

One powerful king. Two tragic queens.

In the court of Henry VIII, it was dangerous for a woman to catch the king’s eye. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were cousins. Both were beautiful women, though very different in temperament. They each learned that Henry’s passion was all-consuming–and fickle.

Sophisticated Anne Boleyn, raised in the decadent court of France, was in love with another man when King Henry claimed her as his own. Being his mistress gave her a position of power; being his queen put her life in jeopardy. Her younger cousin, Catherine Howard, was only fifteen when she was swept into the circle of King Henry. Her innocence attracted him, but a past mistake was destined to haunt her.

Painted in the rich colors of Tudor England, Murder Most Royal is a page-turning journey into the lives of two of the wives of the tempestuous Henry VIII.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Historical Novel!.......2006-11-16

I have read many Plaidy novels, but this delves deeper than the others and represents, in my opinion, absolutely the best of Plaidy, and probably the best on the period. What I don't like about modern historicals is the way they play with history. Plaidy sticks to the facts as they are known and provides insights and details that make the story come alive. The characters are real people, and the facts can't be disputed. In this book, she gives a fairly graphic portrayal of the torture used to extract the false confessions of Henry VIII's hapless victims, and after reading it, I found Plaidy gave me a new understanding of what this era in history, and this dynasty in particular, stood for, and it is even more horrific than I ever imagined. Plaidy's Henry VIII goes about his grotesque and bloody deeds with a good conscience, patting himself on the back for being such a fine and righteous fellow, which makes him even more appalling to our civilized mind. It is a look into the black mind of a serial killer, and a gripping read. Once you pick up the book, you can't put it down again until you're done. Despite the graphic parts, I recommend this novel even for teens, because they won't get a twisted view of history, and besides, Catherine was only a child when this ogre chose her for his queen, so this book would appeal to them. I think everyone who reads it will probably pause and give thanks for being born at a time in history when a monster like this can't roam the highest echelons of power stuffing his bloody mouth with the flesh of saints and sinners alike. That is the beauty of a great historical novel. It makes us understand the past, and appreciate our present even more.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Wives.......2006-06-02

I was drawn to this book in the bookstore because the title said that it featured two of my favorite wives of Bluff King Hal, aka Henry VIII: Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. It tells their sad stories and is a pretty good book.

5 out of 5 stars Reads like a bestseller........2006-03-01

I loved this book. Very easy to read and difficult to put down. The story of Anne and Catherine from what may have been their point of view. Tragic and fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative and moving.......2006-01-28

I first read this novel when I was thirteen and I found it utterly evocative of the Tudor period and it began a long love of all historical novels. I have devoured every book I could find about Anne Boleyn since and this is still the best. Plaidy created a spirited, proud, desirable Anne and the scenes in the novel really bring her to life. The way she weaves the lives of the two cousins together is very clever and I think it is a very well written piece of fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard.......2004-02-29

I really love Jean Plaidy's books, but this one wasn't the best. I am a huge fan of Anne Boleyn so I was excited to read this book. I was a little disappointed in it though.

I have to agree with Lady Jane Grey's opinion. It would have been way better if Anne hadn't of slept with Henry in the book as in real history she didn't. How could someone like Henry keep interestest in them by giving in? Maybe they could, but he certainly wouldn't go as far as to make them Queen of England.

I also think that how she discribed Jane Seymour was a little harsh. Calling her mousy and stuff. I think that she must have been a very brace woman to marry Henry.

I think that Jean Plaidy does a wonderful job portraying Catherine Howard though. She had everything accurate with the room and the people pressuring her into intercourse. I also like how she shows Henry. One of the best things was at the beginning it something like "If all of the patterns of merciless tyranny were lost to the world you could find them in this prince."

Still it was an interesting book. It kept me interested despite its faults.

San Francisco-based private detective Sharon McCone is tracking a man whose actions have already caused the deaths of two women who loved and trusted him in the 18th installment of this memorable series. Because Marcia Muller's books are as much about McCone's relationships with her extended, occasionally dysfunctional family as they are about the cases themselves, first-time visitors might have trouble sorting out all the relatives. But, as always, the rewards are well worth the effort. In this case, there are several evocative flying scenes that help groundlings understand why people do it, a stinging attack on the callousness of the Witness Protection Program, and more glimpses into the tangled soul of Hy Ripinsky, McCone's interesting lover. Other McCone adventures in paperback include The Broken Promise Land, A Wild and Lonely Place, Till the Butchers Cut Him Down, and Wolf in the Shadows.

4 out of 5 stars I Keep Reading.......2003-10-25

I keep coming back for Muller's next Sharon McCone story, so it's safe to conclude that I have enjoyed the series so far. By number 19, it's become as much about McCone and her extended family of familiar characters as it is about the mysteries. For that reason, I suggest that somebody new to the McCone books not start with this one. You can, but it all works better if you have some background.

I didn't find BOTH ENDS OF THE NIGHT to be one of Ms. Mullers' most compelling mysteries. It held my interest all the way through, but there was a little more rhapsodizing on the joys of airplane piloting than I wanted. I also thought that there weren't many real surprises in this one and the climax was too straightforward and obvious. Further, given the personal history of the guy living in the woods, he wouldn't have been difficult for a wealthy father to locate over the course of ten years.

I have enjoyed Mullers' McCone novels and will certainly read more of them. This one, however, while OK, was a bit of a letdown. Not bad, but not one of the best. I'm not suggesting that people (especially fans) not read it, just that there are others I liked better. My four-star rating on this one is a bit soft.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it a lot.......2003-05-30

I'm a big fan of the Sharon McCone series and this one was a very good read. Fast-moving, credible. I enjoyed all the plane-related detail. Muller, like Sharon and Hy, obviously loves flying. I'd never do it myself, but I enjoyed going along for the ride, so to speak.

If you're new to Muller, I URGE you to read the McCone books in order, starting with "Edwin of the Iron Shoes." Believe me, you'll get to this one soon enough.

4 out of 5 stars Flight instructor hires Sharon.......2002-09-01

Sharon visits her flight instructor, Matty Wildress, and senses that something is bothering her. After some questioning, the private Matty discloses that her lover John has disappeared and has left her with his young son. Sharon and her lover Hy fear that Matty and the boy may be in danger and they try to protect them. Circumstances go from bad to worse, there is a murder, and Sharon and Hy begin looking for the perpetrator. From California, to Arkansas, Florida and Minnesota the two investigators hunt for John to try to find out who the murderer is, and why John disppeared so suddenly. Marcia Muller's books have come a long way since the late 70's when she first created Private Investigator Sharon McCone. This book is a winner for those who enjoy mystery and adventure stories.

3 out of 5 stars OTHERS WERE BETTER!!!!.......2001-04-07

I don't think this book is as good as some of the others in the series. I won't go into detail about what the book is about as it is well said in the above writings. I would just be repeating what has already been written. I felt like there were to many people involved. I could not keep up with who was who and who belonged to who. Also to much technical information about the planes. Do not read books for that. I feel the ending did not close all the loop holds. Muller has done better.

5 out of 5 stars Catch up with Sharon's latest adventure!.......2000-08-22

During the time I've known her, Sharon McCone's career has advanced from humble beginnings as an investigator in a co-operative legal service to owning her own private investigation agency employing several operatives and a computer guru. She's moved from a tiny studio apartment with eccentric neighbours to a fully renovated house with two cats and has a half share in a property on the coast. She has learned to fly and become an accomplished pilot. After a series of go-nowhere relationships, she's finally settled into a comfortable long-term partnership, on her terms, with someone who doesn't want to change her. She's been shot at, beaten up and got herself into and out of every sort of dangerous situation. She's a product of Marcia Muller's imagination, and every time I open one of her novels, I feel like I'm catching up with an old friend.

When Matty, the woman who taught Sharon to fly contacts her with a rather transparent excuse for a meeting, Sharon soon finds herself on another case. Turns out the instructor's live-in lover has disappeared, leaving Matty with his adolescent son and $70,000 in the bank. When she finds a message from her missing lover warning that her life may be in danger, Matty refuses to forego a planned aerobatic air show, with disastrous results. Sharon finds herself with a grieving boy on her hands, but luckily, her network of friends are more than willing to help. Soon Sharon finds the missing man is not who everyone thinks he is and she, together with her lover, Hy Ripinsky, set off across the country on a search for the truth. And the truth is not pretty, as they uncover a network of corruption involving a large corporation and government, while desperately trying to stay alive.

Since I met Sharon many years ago in an anthology of short stories by women detective fiction writers, and quickly catching up with her old stories, I've been lucky enough to meet up with her at least once a year to hear of her latest escapades. Yeah, I know she's not real, but once you get involved in this series of books, you can't help but feel she is. Marcia Muller has created such a constantly evolving character that instead of becoming stale after 18 novels, she's only become more interesting, and has taken on a life of her own. Most writers can't help but project some of themselves onto their characters, and I'm guessing Marcia Muller is fearlessly loyal to her friends, happy in her relationship and really LOVES to fly!

Keep `em coming, Marcia Muller! I'll keep reading them as long as you keep writing them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fantasy and adventure.......2006-05-31

A Wizard in Bedlam is better than the first book with more to think about and, as usual, excellent plot and characters. Worth reading at least once. After, you'll want to read the rest...

4 out of 5 stars Revolution needed. Send for Rogue Wizard........2004-04-14

For hundreds of years, the churls have been oppressed, raped, murdered, and exploited by the lords who brought them to their planet. Once, a rebel leader rose from among them--DeCade. And legend of DeCade's return still fills the churls with hope. But, for runaway Churl Dirk, DeCade's legend is a problem too. An organization of runaway churls founded by DeCade's partner, the wizard, controlls the trading fleet that supplies the planet where the churls are held captive. But they cannot move until the people are ready, and the people are waiting for the return of DeCade. There have been plenty of rumors of DeCade's return over the generations, but how can a dead man return--and there is no doubt that DeCade is dead, killed by the nobility in the great rebellion.

Dirk is sent to investigate the latest rumor of DeCade's return and finds instead an extraplanetary nobleman, Gar. Gar is a do-gooder, wandering around the galaxy in his own spaceship, but Dirk knows that Gar is trouble--and trouble is something the nobles are quick to crack down on. A noble raiding party follows up almost as soon as Dirk and Gar meet, and Gar manages to rescue Dirk but is himself captured. Dirk is faced with the decision of trying to rescue Gar, or continuing with his mission--the mission that has been central to the lives of his consortium since DeCade's death in the first revolution.

Author Christopher Stasheff writes convincingly of a future world where fantasy can come true--for the few who are willing to exploit the many. Dirk and Gar make a good team with Dirk being cast in the role of Dr. Watson to Gar's Sherlock Holmes. As the protagonist, Dirk is sympathetic, caught between multiple admirable goals, taunted by the beauty just beyond his reach, and torn between the love of the land of his birth and the reality that even the churls see him as an outsider--not really one of them.

In his Rogue Wizard series, Stasheff presents a number of different societies in need of overthrow and revolution--with Gar the Tom Paine of his day. Although some of the books are better than others, all are entertaining. A WIZARD IN BEDLAM is the second book in the series and one of the best. I also found the martial arts details to be well researched and integrated--something that's very welcome in the fantasy world.

            4 out of 5 stars Telepathy a pain?.......2000-04-08

This is a good book that shows how much of a pain having telepathic abilities can be. Magnus is hidding in a bedlam (a mideval insane asilum) when one of his largest strengths become his biggest weakness.

            5 out of 5 stars A MUST Have!.......2004-05-20

This book is a must have for caregivers or anyone who has a family member with Alzheimer's. You can read it through or just pick out chapters that will help you at the time, but the biggest help to me was Chapter 12 about Approaching Death. It gave me the comfort and help that I needed. I've read many books on the subject, but this has been the most helpful yet because it is based on love.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Has The Answers You Are Looking For...........2003-07-22

This is the book that changed everything for me. Its about approaching this disease with Love, Strength and Courage.
Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. If you want to truly understand this disease, this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2001-08-25

For anyone with a loved one suffering with Alzheimer's this is the book to get. It will help you understand the disease and how to cope. Written in everyday language it is packed with information on the stages these victims go through and how you can help them. One of the best I've read!

5 out of 5 stars A book that packs a powerful message about Love.......2000-10-23

This is a tremendous resource for people who believe in the healing power of Love. Frena Gray Davidson has written a very spiritually centered book that will inevitably help any caregiver and their loved one.

She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.

She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.

Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.

She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person." [p149]

The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.

Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Your first choice book on Alzheimer's disease........2000-03-20

Frena Gray-Davidson is the ultimate "been there, done that" person in Alzheimer's care. Her book is a support group that can always be with you, ready to speak to the issues that concern you now and prepare you for what is likely to concern you in the future. All parts of this book will help you meet the challenges of dementia care, however several chapters are of special value. Chapter 2, Before Diagnosis and chapter 4, Family Crisis Alzheimer's Style guide families in the early stages of the disease. Chapter 11, Knowing When To Let Go, answers some of the tough questions about placement in a care facility. The final chapter, Moving On, gives guidance for that time when caregiving is no longer the top priority. In keeping with her theme not to lose the person in the process of coping with the disease, Ms. Gray-Davidson leads us away from using psychiatric terms to label behaviors and thought patterns which result from diminishing cognitive ability. She explains what may look like paranoia as "a reasonable fear response, given the limitations of the disease." She makes what is often labeled delusional thinking easier to understand as "memory which has drifted into some point in the past." She writes with compassion and humor, creating therapy for the caregiver and family members. The book is interesting to read and easy to understand. As a Geriatric Care Consultant, I have often loaned my copy of The Alzheimer's Sourcebook for Caregivers to my clients. Most of them return it with the comment that they have purchased copies for themselves and for family members. This started with the 1st edition and is continuing with the 3rd. I can make no higher recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book to help you through the tough times!.......2006-03-24

My mother died of Alzheimer's in January of 2006. This book hepled my father, myself (the only child)and my wife through the whole process. It is realistic and tells one what to expect and how to handle each stage of this terminal illness. I highly recommend this book to the caretaker and his/her family to help them understand and deal with the realities of Alzheimer's.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-09-02

Because a relative of mine has AD, I spent some time at a large local bookstore (BN) looking for the right book. This is the one I picked. I think very highly of it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent feedback from family members.......1998-09-18

As the Director of Social Work at a Retirement and Skilled Nursing Facility, this is one of the books that I loan out to families. I have had nothing but positive feedback from the families who have borrowed the book, and they have invariably told me that they found it easy to read, highly informative, and very helpful for them overall. In fact, I am visiting Amazon.com right now to order 2 more copies of the book at the residents' family members' request! -- Victoria T.Carey, MSW, LICSW
