Book Description

Milk Glass Moon, the third book in Adriana Trigiani's bestselling Big Stone Gap series, continues the life story of Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney as she faces the challenges and changes of motherhood with her trademark humor and honesty. With twists as plentiful as those found on the holler roads of southwest Virginia, this story takes turns that will surprise and enthrall the reader.

Transporting us from Ave Maria's home in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Italian Alps, from New York City to the Tuscan countryside, Milk Glass Moon is the story of a shifting mother-daughter relationship, of a daughter's first love and a mother's heartbreak, of an enduring marriage that contains its own ongoing challenges, and of a community faced with seismic change.

All of Trigiani's beloved characters are back: Jack Mac, Ave Maria's true love, who is willing to gamble security for the unknown; her best friend and confidant, bandleader Theodore Tip-ton, who begins a new life in New York City; librarian and sexpert Iva Lou Wade Makin, who faces a life-or-death crisis. Meanwhile, surprises emerge in the blossoming of crusty cashier Fleeta Mullins, the maturing of mountain girl turned savvy businesswoman Pearl Grimes, and the return of Pete Rutledge, the handsome stranger who turned Ave Maria's world upside down in Big Cherry Holler.

In this rollicking hayride of upheaval and change, Ave Maria is led to places she never dreamed she would go, and to people who enter her life and rock its foundation. As Ave Maria reaches into the past to find answers to the present, readers will stay with her every step of the way, rooting for the onetime town spinster who embraced love and made a family. Milk Glass Moon is about the power of love and its abiding truth, and captures Trigiani at her most lyrical and heartfelt.

Great book! Author is awesome. First time reading her books & really enjoyed the triology.

I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY STEPMOTHER AND AUNT. THEY BOTH LIKE HER BOOKS REALLY WELL.

5 out of 5 stars Milk Glass Moon.......2007-02-11

I have loved all of the Big Stone Gap Novels - "Milk Glass Moon" is the third in this series which will charm anyone who enjoys a kind of "down home" story, as we journey through life with Ave Maria, her husband,Jack, and their daughter, Etta, and all their friends in Big Stone Gap. I call this one of my "feel good" books (Please note, I feel the same way about Fannie Flagg's books) - you want to pack up and move to Big Stone Gap and be a part of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The third book in the "Big Stone Gap" quartet.......2006-09-09

After following the troubled MacChesney marriage in the second book, readers now focus on the adolescent Etta as she struggles with growing up. Her mother Ave Maria, too, has difficulty allowing her daughter this passage, especially after losing her toddler son Joe to leukemia.

Yet, like her mother, Etta promises to become a strong young woman. This doesn't make the MacChesneys any easier, though, when longtime family friend Stefano Grassi comes to visit from Italy...

This book is the second of the "Big Stone Gap" quartet; the fourth book is scheduled for release at the end of October 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2006-05-24

Like the 2 previous novels about Big Stone Gap and the MacChesney, I love this one too! I am glad to see that there is another book, The Return to Big Stone Gap, coming out in September.

3 out of 5 stars Big Stone Gap.......2005-10-22

I was very excited to read this book after reading all the great reviews, and after a friend's recommendation. I went ahead and bought all three books in the series. Well, I was disappointed. It is an ok book, but I was expecting much more humor. If you like Nicholas Sparks, this is probably your kind of book, but if you are a fan of Fannie Flagg, Jan Karon, and Janet Evanovich and like the out loud laughter, I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Big Stone Gap.......2003-10-23

The best story ever! I loved the writing, it was fresh and very clear. The carerters were strong and you just could not wait to read more and more. The next two books were just as great. I feel Adriana Trigiani has changed my life in a special way with her honest look into a woman's feelings.I will always treasure her books and antisipate more great reading. I even visited Big Stone Gap this summer and it warmed my heart that it was a real place and the people are just as real!

It's Bill Smith's turn to take center stage in this sixth entry in S.J. Rozan's memorable Lydia Chin/Bill Smith series of mysteries, and the tough and taciturn private eye really comes into his own. Smith has cloistered himself in his remote cabin in upstate New York, where he escapes from his private devils by fishing, hunting, and practicing Mozart and Bach on his piano, when he is sucked into two local crime cases.

The first involves Tony Antonelli, the brother of a young man whom Smith once helped out of trouble. Tony finds the body of a murdered local hoodlum in the cellar of his roadhouse. His brother Jimmy suspiciously goes missing and becomes the leading suspect. The second case involves a reclusive older woman (who turns out to be a world-famous painter). She asks Bill to track down some of her early works, which had been stolen from her studio. There's also a very nasty sheriff who hates Smith, a moderately tolerant state trooper who grudgingly helps, a corrupt executive of a babyfood company and his sad, dangerous teenage daughter, plus a crew of smalltime crooks who give the lie to the myth of rural safety. Lydia doesn't get called in from the Big Apple until quite late, and when she arrives she attracts stares in the local 7-Eleven "as though she were a black-petalled orchid that had sprung up in the daisy patch. Back in the car, Lydia grinned, said, 'Not many Asians up here, huh?' 'Especially in black leather,'" Bill answers."

The plot might have one or two tangles too many for its own good, but as usual Rozan proves herself to be one of the best descriptive writers in the genre, bringing to indelible life everything from a modern painter's latest work, to a depressed countryside where the last stone quarry is about to close down and grind away a few more dreams.

Other books in this award-winning series: A Bitter Feast, Concourse, Mandarin Plaid, and No Colder Place. --Dick Adler

              Book Description

For the past twelve years that private investigator Bill Smith has owned his cabin in the woods in a small upstate New York town. He has used it as an escaping, a place of refuge, never letting city life or his work intrude. All that changes, however, when Eva Colgate, a local farmer, summons Bill to meet with her. She wants him to quietly recover some recently stolen possessions - items which, if known to be hers, would expose her past and a secret she has kept for thirty years.

As Bill, with the help of his sometime-partner Lydia Chin, begins the search for the stolen goods, the usual quiet of this rural county abruptly shatters. A local hoodlum is found murdered in the basement of a local bar, the young daughter of a prominent businessman runs away from home, and Jimmy Antonelli, a teenager with a troubled past who is tied to these events, is missing. Now Bill and Lydia have to find the missing boy - and uncover the connection among these events - in time to save him.

A gripping story of power, corruption, and long-held secrets, Stone Quarry is the most compelling novel yet from one of the finest mystery novelists of our time.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the more I read Rozan, the more I admire her writing ability........2005-12-22

The more you read the more you appreciate her writing

Bill Smith is the lead in Stone Quarry. Previously I had read only novels that put Lydia Chin in this role. The accomplishment here is that Rozan does quite a remarkable job of creating a wholly new ambiance when she skips from Chin to Smith. The Chin books kind of remind me of a modern day Agatha Christy while this Smith work falls under the hard tack noir of yesteryear. Stone Quarry is a bare-knuckle brawl that comes close to greatness but falls just short. One thing that I like about Rozan is her ability to work in a very complicated plot structure that pulls together through intricate evolution. But here, parts of this plot feel unnecessary and burdensome.

All of my complaints aside, Rozan is an author that I would recommend to anyone. The closest authors that I can think of are either Dick Francis or the Kate Shugack series'. If you have read these authors and enjoyed them, I think that you will be in for a treat with Rozan

              3 out of 5 stars Wholly average.......2001-07-15

By reading the hype written by a lot of my favorite authors of mysteries and thriller about S.J. Rozan's latest book, "Stone Quarry, I expected a lot from it. What I found though was somewhat entertaining, not at all informative, and wholly average.

Bill Smith, private detective, and his on-again/off-again partner, Lydia Chin, are the stars of this current installment of an ongoing series. While vacationing in his deceased uncle's cabin in upstate New York, Smith becomes engaged in a what appears on the surface to be a simple burglary involving a reclusive artist who wants to remain anonymous but still recover some valuable paintings that were stolen from her. The situation devolves quickly into a fight to the death with local crooks who may-or-may-not have mob ties, along with some bought-off cops on the local force.

While Rozan does an able job with telling this story, it follows a well-trodden path and ends in a place we've all been many times before. By the end of the story, I found myself being able to skip ahead without missing anything, which to me, says a lot about a book. While it appears that Rozan may have a huge following, she didn't gain a new one with me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as usual.......2001-05-30

The setting is different in this book (rural upstate New York vs NYC) but in every other way this book is very similar to Rozan's other novels, which is a good thing. As usual, this is a very well-written book; Rozan obviously puts a good deal of thought and effort into her writing; she tries hard to describe things and people in a way that is fresh and that puts vivid images of the scene into the minds of the readers. The plot is complex and satisfying, which is one of the things that Rozan always does well that most of the current mystery writers do not. This series is made up of real, quality mysteries, in the tradition of Chandler, Hammett and Ross MacDonald; these are not thrillers masquerading as mysteries. There is a good bit of action here, though, and the ending is a real barnburner. My only quibble, and it is a small one, is that Rozan needs to either have Smith and Chin get together or have them decide to be strictly friends. The quasi-relationship that they have been in for several books now is starting to wear a little thin.

              4 out of 5 stars IT"S BILL SMITH!!!!!.......2000-08-29

You can tell the Audiofile person wrote a review without listening to it, since the character's name is Bill Smith, not Bill Stone.

Anyway, all of the Bill Smith/ Lydia Chin books are terrific, especially since the point of view for each book switches from Lydia to Bill. Lydia's problems with being female and Chinese in a white man's world are my favorite part of the books. Poor Bill! Carrying a torch for Lydia and trying not to mess up a fine partnership. They have such a strange relationship, but it works. Get the books or tapes, curl up in a chair and enjoy.

              5 out of 5 stars A new departure.......1999-10-14

Shamus winner S. J. Rozan tries something new: setting a book in upstate New York instead of New York City. The city was such a strong presence in the earlier books that I was afraid this one would be weaker, but it's a great read: atmospheric, dark and moving. Good plot, good characters, too. BTW, it's a Bill Smith book, so Lydia Chin fans, wait your turn.

                Book Description

Look up at the Empire State Building in New York City and you will see an almost endless ribbon of soaring stone—Indiana limestone, to be precise. The Empire State Building, Pentagon, Chicago Tribune Building, and many university structures, state capitols, post offices, and churches in every state (and buildings in other countries) are constructed of this exceptional material, renowned for its durability, consistency, and capacity to accept and retain fine detail. When part of the Pentagon was destroyed after 9/11, an Indiana quarry went to work, mining 46 truckloads of limestone to be sent to the Washington site and enabling reconstruction to be completed ahead of schedule.

Limestone Lives pays tribute to the skill and dedication of the men and women who work with stone. It combines 79 striking fine art photographic images with engaging oral histories, representing a range of voices of the workers themselves. We hear from sculptors, drill runners, stone polishers, planermen, forklift operators, a union leader, and the president of a stone company. The book also features brief descriptions of the region's stone companies, a map locating Indiana quarries and stone mills, and a look at how the industry has changed over the years.

Limestone Lives is a testament to men and women who take enormous pride in the quality of their work, as well as to the role this unique industry plays in creating buildings that last.

I just finished reading this book...I love it. Ok, I am somewhat biased since Ms. Ferrucci selected my brother, Ned Cunningham, as one carver she interviewed. My family has been in every phase of limestone from my grandfather, to my father, step-father, and both brothers. This book really captures the real impact of limestone on peoples lives. The pictures are clean and varied. Nice job! Jean Cunningham

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book About Colonial Stone Quarrying.......2006-06-30

As a mason and a rock lover I've always wanted to know how it was done back in the day when there were no jackhammers, power drills or cranes. I also spend a lot of time in the woods and this book is a great way to help date some of those old rocks and crumbling stone foundations in the abandoned and overgrown farms and fields of New England. A great companion to Wessels "Reading the Forested Landscape". Indepth research and detailed illustrations give the how, when and why different techniques were utilized and developed with time and technology. The reprinted illustrations date from the 17th through the 19th centuries and really show what a few well leveraged poles and pulleys can move. The book shows every tool and covers every imaginable technique for quarrying, splitting, finishing, hoisting or transporting stone prior to the advent of railroads and steam power. Definitely a one of a kind book due to the limited research on the topic. Great for scholars and amateurs alike.

                              Book Description

In the late-medieval land of Barnard, between the mountains and sea, the peaceful lifestyle of the people has been shattered by fear. Monsters, known as the Dark Ones, roam the land, killing indiscriminately. The townsfolk fear to venture out from their homes, and travel from town to town has become a risk to life and limb. To protect the people from this terror, several guilds have sprung up, including the Guild of Assassins and the Guild of Mercenaries. To go out into the world, or travel across the wilderness, hired mercenaries are essential. One man has built a reputation as an especially fierce monster-killer#151;a man known as Leroy Schvartzer. A former high-ranking member of the Guild of Mercenaries, Leroy has struck out on his own. Many try to hire for his superior skills, but Leroy has his own agenda. He has a mission to accomplish, a vow to fulfill. This vow is known only to himself, and his one companion#151;his sentient long-sword Ragnarok.

I was very disappointed by this book. It seems to have been written for children. It has some information that seems wildly inappropriate for a book that purports to be about pregnancy -- a section on birth control, with an explanation of what a condom is and how it works, for example. It also takes pains to explain terms such as "trimester." It doesn't get very deep into what a diabetic woman can expect and encounter during pregnancy, and that's what I need. I agree with another reviewer that someone needs to write a good book about diabetes and pregnancy.

I have been a diabetic for 10 years. I just expected this book to add something to my existing knowledge. It so introductory.. and does not give any additional information, then what diabetics already know

I am the editor of Diabetic Mommy Online Magazine - DiabeticMommy.com

I am a type 2 diabetic, and had to start insulin when I got pregnant with my son. At that time I felt there was little information on pregnancy and diabetes and this little book was a God-send.

I was not a diabetes expert by any means, so this booklet was great for giving me a frame of reference for all the new information that was suddently being shoved in my direction. When you are a newly pregnant diabetic, many times you can find yourself overwhelmed by all the information they want you to learn NOW. As time passed, I realized much of the information I was getting in kits, booklets, pamphlets and information sheets was just the same information rehashed over and over. The reason why I was able to mentally organize the information and stop feeling like I was in another country when it came to diabetes terms was because of this book.

I've looked at the other reviews and see that many of the negative reviews came from type 1 diabetics. And, I can understand why they would feel this way. They most likely have lived most of their life with this disease, and this little booklet goes over a lot of stuff they already know.

This is a little book, about 75 pages. It contains 10 brief chapters and sections with the following titles:

                              Diabetes, Pregnancy & You

I purchased this book knowing that one person had rated it poorly... however without any other reviews, I took a chance. I agree with the first rater, this book is "basic".... it gives more detail on what every pregnant woman should do while pregnant... and what all the books on pregnancy already suggest. The only chapter that I found beneficial for me with gestational diabetes was the chapter on how the different insulins work within the human body. Other than that, the place that I found the best info. for gestational diabetes was on parentsplace.com message boards.... topic (pregnant and diabetic). Someone needs to write a good informative book for women with GD.

                              Book Description

Gestational diabetes is a rare and little-understood form of diabetes. It only appears in pregnancy and usually disappears afterward, but proper self-care during pregnancy is still crucial. Gestational Diabetes: What to Expect, a comprehensive guide for the woman with gestational diabetes, explains the proper elements of self-care, including nutritious meal planning, proper insulin therapy, and accurate blood sugar monitoring.

                              1 out of 5 stars Too simplistic.......2000-02-01

This book was written for those without a high school education. It did not contain any relevant information that you couldn't get from a basic pamplet, and included some condescending sections on stopping hard drug abuse and contraception.
