Amazing story!.......2007-10-07
An amazing story that brings you back to the foundation of your faith, as they did for me. I laughed, cried, and rejoiced with the characters as they went through their trials and tribulations. Kudos to Francine Rivers for bringing a remarkable story for generations to come!
an insight into 1st century Christians.......2007-08-27
This series was so great. Not only does it keep your attention in an entertaining way but it makes you think more about what it was like for 1st century Christians.
Great christian fiction........2007-08-24
Didn't get a lot done while reading this book, couldn't put it down. The story draws you in and you also learn alot about this time, the Roman Empire and the plight of their conquered peoples. Can be a little gruesome in parts. Highly recommend.
for reading and re-reading - books that keep on giving.......2007-08-09
Francine Rivers' "Mark of the Lion" series provides believable plots; well-crafted, fully-human characters; satisfying love stories; and practical instruction in Christian living. These books are fun to read, but they go beyond that to provide a deep satisfaction that you can't get from mere entertainment. Also delightful are her polished writing and her attention to historical details. Her careful craftsmanship delights the heart AND the mind. History buffs, romance readers, and students of practical Christian living should all enjoy these books.
Excellent novels.......2007-08-09
These books have really spoken to me. Ms. Rivers has done her homework when it comes to historical accuracy, even printing a glossary of terms in the back of the book. The story lines and characters are outstanding, and beautifully illustrate the story of God's love for us.

It will blow you away........2007-07-01
If you're like me, you couldn't put down the first book (A Voice in the Wind)... you will be less able to stop reading this one. Good fiction holds your interest and passes the time. Great fiction grabs you and refuses to let go...all the while inspiring you to greater thoughts and actions in your own life. You will LOVE following Marcus and Hadassah through their journeys in this book. If you haven't purchased the whole series yet, start clicking away!
Inspiration for Forever Changed.......2006-10-22
Reading Francine Rivers was an immediate encouragement to contine writing my historical novel Forever Changed, a Journey in Jericho. Her attention to detail is outstanding. Her characters are fully fleshed out. I learned much from her novels about ancient times and the thrill of the read.
An Echo in the Darkness.......2006-08-28
In Francine Rivers second book of the Mark of the Lion Series she leads you on a journey with Marcus through Jerusalem as he searches for God. Julia, Marcus' sister, also goes through a personal journey of her own as she sows what she reapt in the first book. It gives the reader a historic look at the Roman Empire without overloading you on facts. This book was a fabulous book ending the story of Julia, Marcus, & Hadassah.
Exquisite.......2006-07-13
Rivers produced another book replete with interesting characters, a compelling plot, and rich, vivid imagery. This is a story of love between people and the Lord who loves them, but that sentence does very little to describe the story. Highly recommended.
As Good as the First!.......2006-06-09
It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.
God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.
I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.
I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author. God has blessed Francine Rivers with a wonderful gift. I urge everyone to partake in that gift.

Two for One Doesn't Appeal.......2005-12-13
I've enjoyed the 3 earlier books in this series but this one was a disappointment. Megan, Ryan and the book club members go on a hike in a canyon and Megan's dogs dig up a body. While Megan is checking that out, another body, a mummy, is found.
The first corpse was murdered five years ago and the other 140 years ago.
Every couple of chapters of the book gives us another 10 pages or so of the lifestory of the mummified corpse. I was interested in what Megan could learn from her examination of the mummy (like an Elkin's Gideon Oliver mystery), but not the backstory of her life. Every time I came to a chapter set in 1868, I skipped it. It worked fine. The investigation by Megan & Ryan of the murder of the more recent corpse had many of the features of the earlier books, the humor, the characters, the denied romance of the couple because of their history, etc. The plot was a little thin and because about 60 pages were devoted to the mummy's story, it was a short read.
Maybe if I'd read this book first instead of 4th, I'd have had the patience to read the Commanche's story, but by this time, I only want to know what Megan, Ryan and the Murder by the Yard book club are up to.
Book Description
Orders to chase down the French frigate Elita off the Cape of Good Hope came as welcome news to Captain Havelock. Stranded with the rest of the fleet at Spithead while waiting for France to initiate hostilities was an unwelcome duty for any up and coming officer. Here was a chance for glory - and prize money! The duel between the Whirlwind and its enemy would prove to be far from easy though. Very soon, Captain Havelock would come to realise that theirs were not the only two warships in the southern ocean, and an enemy long since thought to be vanquished would return from the dead to exact a terrible vengeance!

Zombie and Commander.......2007-06-06
This was a random pickup at Bookpeople down in Austin. The cover looked interesting, the back blurb promised zombies and sailing ships, two of my favorite things. And it had them. It was a generally good read, had me hooked fairly quick. I only wish it had had the zombies appear faster, but since I like a good sailing story I didn't mind it. If you like both zombies and Age of Sail books, you'll like it...if you only like one genre, this book may be a little too weird for you.
TOO MUCH SAILING...NOT ENOUGH ZOMBIES!.......2007-04-22
Zombies have been enjoying tremendous popularity in recent years in film, books, and comics as everyone wants to try their hand at giving a new twist to the undead. Death Hulk certainly does give zombies a new twist although it may have twisted a bit too hard. The book is set during the time of Napolean as England is in fear of a full-scale invasion by the French. The crew of the ship Whirlwind is becoming increasingly apprehensive and is itching to go out and fight.
They finally receive their orders and are to set sail for the Cape of Good Hope off the African Coast in search of the French Frigate Elita, a massive ship that has captured or sunk over a dozen ships in recent months. On the surface it looks to be a suicide mission for Captain Havelock and his crew as they are both outmanned and outgunned. Havelock is confident of his ability to take the Elita by surprise and has the full support of his officers. His crew however is not so sure. Talk runs rampant among them of a curse upon the Havelock name and rumors of the French using the undead to aid them have the men troubled.
But another ship is soon spotted in the gloom, a ship which gives off a horrible stench of death and decay. A ship called the Deja which was supposed to have been sunk many years earlier and now nicknamed Death Hulk. The crew of the Whirlwind now has two terrible foes to battle, and one is already dead.
Rather than a period piece about zombies set upon the high seas we get a period piece on the high seas that happens to include zombies. This could easily have been a mere historical adventure novel and in many ways it is. We are nearly halfway through the book before the Whirlwind first encounters the Death Hulk. This unfortunately makes for a story that is a bit short both on action and horror elements. I will give Matthew Sprange credit for knowing a good deal about the sea and nautical terminology. It's certainly historically accurate if nothing else. I'm just not sure if there's enough to really keep horror fans interested for the entire story.

Pirates of the Caribbean II for Adults.......2006-12-18
This book was a real page turner - I couldn't put it down! This was like Pirates of the Caribbean II - except good. Real action. Real zombie battles. I can't wait for the next Tomes of the Dead book to come out!

In this lucid and revolutionary book, cardiologist Robert Superko counsels readers about how to outwit their genes by identifying "metabolic markers" that predict future heart attacks. "To make a preemptive strike, you have to know which factors are putting you in harm's way," he explains. So rather than focusing on cholesterol count, Superko outlines a patient-doctor partnership to create a personal risk profile he calls a "cardiac fingerprint." Here's the drill: Through a detailed self-assessment, patients identify a series of risk factors (family history, age, physical traits, medical conditions). If the risk profile is high, the next step is a physician- ordered blood test to identify metabolic markers (for example, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and lipoprotein) that indicate high risk for heart attack. Depending on the results, tests such as a carotid or intra-vascular ultrasound can pinpoint heart disease. With this data in hand, Dr. Superko is convinced that patients have the power to change their cardiac destiny. For each significant risk, he suggests prescriptive keys in diet, activity level, nutrition and medication. With writer Laura Tucker, Dr. Superko demystifies complex issues about heart health. His ideas are compelling and optimistiche believes in a future when every heart attack will be an anomaly. The only challenge may be persuading your cholesterol counting doctor. --Barbara Mackoff

A must read for both Dr and patient.......2005-08-14
I am a physician assistant in Cardiology and I have put into practice much of what this book teaches. Alot of it is what I've known for a long time but have not had alot of the research to back up my theories. I recommend it to every patient who has the slightest interest in taking control of their own health.
The best source for understanding causes of heart disease .......2004-09-05
The lipoprotein story is a hard one to tell to the public, but Dr. Superko does an extraordinary job. He tells us in plain English just why the national obsession with cholesterol has misguided us, and how the superior insights provided by lipoprotein testing uncovers hidden heart disease risk far more effectively.
He peppers his well-written book with gripping stories of real people who have had life-saving information provided through lipoprotein testing.
I've personally met Dr. Superko, and I find his book to be as engaging as he is in real life. If you or a loved one evenly remotely suspect that heart disease could be in your future, Dr. Superko's book is the authoritative resource to turn to.
Contains a major flaw.......2003-06-29
The major contribution of this book is listing and describing metabolic markers for heart disease other than cholesterol.
The major flaw of the book is that he recommends pretty much the standard AHA diet of 30% fat for those persons whose markers (other than cholesterol) are normal. That diet will not stop continued stenosis of the coronary arteries (plaque buildup). The only way to stop plaque buildup in the coronary arteries, as demonstrated by angiographic evidence (the gold standard that looks at flow in the arteries) is the very low fat diet, plus high fiber, low sugar, that reduces cholesterol below 150. The experimental evidence that is persuasive has been done by Dean Ornish, MD, and Caldwell Esselstyn, MD. Of course, Nathan Pritikin (a chemist) was the grandfather of this diet. His autopsy showed his arteries were clear of plaque.
The author states that a very low fat diet for some people will bring about LDL Pattern B. First, that will not happen with all people. Second, the evidence of the benefits of a very low fat, low sugar, high fiber diet, is far stronger than the studies on the danger of LDL Pattern B with such a diet.
