4 out of 5 stars Great partner with Cold Sassy Tree.......2007-09-18

(LEAVING COLD SASSY is the unfinished sequel to Cold Sassy Tree with Reminiscence by Katrina Kenison)

After author Olive Ann Burns' first book, Cold Sassy Tree, became an instant hit when it was published in 1984, it received overwhelming accolades from readers and critics across the country. Everyone wanted a sequel, and Burns, who was struggling with cancer and later, congestive heart failure, wanted to write it. But she was the world's most particular writer: she had spent years writing and re-writing her first book, yet she hoped to have the sequel done by 1991. Bedridden for months at a time, finally losing her lifetime love, Andy Sparks, whom she'd met at The Atlanta Constitution and Journal, Burns fought against time to finish the sequel, called Time, Dirt, and Money.

But she had barely finished the first 14 chapters when she died quite suddenly at her and her husband's mountain retreat--The Write House, in Commerce, Georgia. So Mariner Books has put together both books, Cold Sassy Tree and its unfinished sequel in two soft cover editions to be re-issued September 2007. There readers can at least get a glimpse into the lives of Will Tweedy and his bride, Sanna, ten years after the first book ended.

This is a more grownup Will talking, his dialect rectified by schooling, but his appetites for resistant women just as powerful as in his childhood. His stubbornness and determination to win Sanna remind us of his Grandpa Blakeslee's stubbornness and determination to marry whomever he wanted, too. This book has no similar strong character like Grandpa to carry it, but Burn was planning to use Will's Aunt Loma to take his place. How it would have turned out, we'll never know.

But even more interesting than the fiction, I found Olive Ann's biography written by her friend, Katrina Kenison, to be a wonderful insight into the author's character, with all her quirks, optimism and determination.

Armchair Interviews says: read both books for a delightful journey into one writer's character and her favorite people.

2 out of 5 stars Should have been left alone.......2007-01-17

A very disappointing "sequel" to the original Cold Sassy Tree. The finished section was ok, but reading the author's notes as to possibilities that should, could or would happen next were very unfulfilling. The marriage difficulties based on Sanna's personality and Will's unrelenting love for his first girlfriend didn't seem to spring from any of what the author wrote in the first half. "Leave" this one alone.

3 out of 5 stars Leaving Cold Sassy.......2007-01-10

Very obvious not written with the content the Author had orginally intended but it does give closer to the Cold Sassy.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!.......2006-01-29

This book is unfinished. The author died before she could complete it. It has none of the humor or warmth of the original book. I believe it was published by the heirs as a way to squeeze some money from their mother's estate. Shame on them!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-07-28

I read this book for the first time 10 years ago and am reading it again...This book should be a classic.

          Book Description

Anyone who came under the spell of Cold Sassy Tree will delight in this unfinished sequel, which returns to the story of the unforgettable Will Tweedy. Joined by such beloved characters as Grandpa Blakeslee and Miss Love, Will, at age twenty-five, now faces the complexities of adult life: he falls in love with his wife-to-be, and grapples with the influences of the modern world of 1917 on his rural Georgia town—recently renamed “Progressive City.” Before her death in 1990, Olive Ann Burns expressed her wish that the fifteen chapters she had written of Will’s story be published as they are here, along with her notes for future scenes. In addition, Burns’s longtime editor and friend, Katrina Kenison, leaves us with an appreciative reminiscence of the beloved author and the legacy she left behind.

4 out of 5 stars Several notches above typical action/adventure fare.......2007-09-18

With seventeen kills to his name, Jake Nacht is one of the mob's most reliable hitmen-he'll kill anyone if the price is right. Thus, he accepts a contract on a US Senator, despite his misgivings about having to do the job at a particular time and place. Nacht prepares carefully, but has to hurry his shot when he hears the police knocking on his hotel room door. Thinking quickly, Nacht almost escapes, but is gunned down by an officer who obviously knows who he is.

Paralyzed from the neck down, Nacht wants only to end his existence, but cannot do it alone. He strikes a desperate bargain with his nurse, Angela Graham, who reluctantly promises to assist his suicide if Nacht's physical rehabilitation is unsuccessful. Nacht gives it his all, but shows little improvement after four months. Having fulfilled his end of the bargain Nacht wants to hold Angela to her promise, but she has different ideas. Angela implores Jake to participate in an experiment conducted by her uncle, a scientist who wants to test risky spinal regeneration techniques on humans. Intrigued by the possibility of recovery and revenge on the men who set him up, Nacht agrees.

Jake is healed by the process, but does not know if the effects are permanent Since his time may be short, he immediately embarks on a campaign of vengeance, halting only when Angela is kidnapped in retaliation. Jake must face his enemies on their own ground if he is to save Angela and have his revenge.

Nightkill does not break any new ground, but is a good, solid read, several notches above typical action/adventure fare. Wilson and Lyon (aka Steven Spruill) take great pains to create a believable, engrossing backstory for Nacht, which metamorphosizes into a homage to the movie The Most Dangerous Game. Although Nacht's history is often more interesting than the action of the main story, it never totally eclipses it--the authors skillfully bring the novel to an explosive conclusion, providing ample thrills and drama along the way. Reminiscent of Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact and the Steven Seagal movie Hard to Kill, Nightkill is fast moving and hard hitting, a respectful tribute to the men's action/adventure genre.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent revenge thriller!.......2007-09-01

This is one of the few F. Paul Wilson novels I've read that had nothing to do with the supernatural. In fact, truth be told, it's really off my usual line of novels to read.

                    It's a revenge novel.

Hit man, working for the mob, kills other 'bad men' making the world a little better place, for a price.

He's offered a lucrative contract to kill a prominent senator, and in doing so breaks several 'rules' that were drilled (pun intended) into him by his mentor 'the Sarge'.

Things go south right from the get-go, and he ends up paralyzed from the neck down.

As with most of my favourite novels, this one is a human story, about finding a reason to live and righting wrongs. You get to see into the soul of this hired killer, and he turns out to be more than just a thug. In the end, what he's willing to do for someone he cares about shows just how much his experience changed him.

I would have given it a higher review, but the novel was too damned short, in my opinion.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the main character reminded me heavily of 'Jack' from his Repairman Jack series.

Worth reading, don't doubt that for a second.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not Wilson's Best.......2006-01-19

Jake Nacht has a rather unusual occupation. He's an assassin or better known in crime circles, a "Hit Man". Trouble is his latest hit didn't work out so well. Jake was set up by his employer and shot by an arresting officer. He was supposed to die but he didn't but as far as he's concerned that would have been far preferable to his present condition. You see Jake is now a paraplegic and he can't even eat a meal on his own let alone get even with his betrayers.

But Jake has a guardian angel. Well not really. Angel is her name and she's gorgeous but she's also his nurse. Jake really likes Angel and is even more frustrated that he can't do anything about it. In fact Jake is helpless. He can't do anything about anything and he wants to die, so he asks Angel to kill him. To his surprise, Angel was not surprised. It seems most paraplegics have similar emotions at first, so Angel agrees to consider this if he will work very hard in therapy for three months.

In his impaired state, Jake, having very little to do, periodically flashes back to his childhood. Jake was an orphan who bounced around until he arrived at Sarge's place. Sarge was a ex marine and sniper who became Jake's mentor and when Jake showed promise as a sniper, Sarge adopted him.

In the meantime unbeknown to Jake, his neurologist Dr. Graham, who is also Angel's uncle and is a research scientist as well, working on regeneration of spinal chords on paralyzed rats, has some success at approximately the same time Jake's ninety days is up. Jake is expecting Angel to help him die but instead is informed about the possibility of a cure.

Dr. Graham at first is angry at Angel for telling Jake and resistant since his procedure is in the early experimental stages. But Jake is persistent and convincing, plus Jake agrees to give him the five million dollar settlement he received from his shooting, which appeared to be a matter of mistaken identity.

Jake is moved to Dr. Graham's laboratory where the operation takes place and is a success and Jake is now free to pursue those who doublecrossed him or Angel but not both. However weeks if not months of physical therapy remain before Jake can think about any course of action.

Unfortunately, moving Jake from the hospital made Jake's former employers suspicious, as a mobile as well as motivated Jake would be a grave danger to them.

                    Conclusion

                    F. Paul Wilson is one of my favorite writers if not my overall favorite, however I'm afraid Nightkill was not quite up to the standard of most of his books. At two hundred and eighty-seven pages, Nightkill was a quick easy read and a pleasant one as well. The story showed promise but it never quite lived up to that promise. This book was co-authored with Steve Lyon so I don't know where or how much of a contribution Wilson made. The writing style was still smooth and concise. The story was pretty much from the first person and the character development was ok, though not great.

It was hard to sympathize with our hit man protagonist, even after reading about his strange upbringing with Sarge. I suppose I should touch on that a little. Sarge who had been a Marine Corp sniper evolved into a hired hit man for the Mob but he felt no challenge in killing helpless, unsuspecting, stationary targets. He trained Jake, ostensibly to follow in his footsteps but had something else in mind.

It was also hard to imagine that Jake could have been so lucky to have fallen into the hands of Dr. Graham, the only person in the history of the Universe, who was, amazingly, able to cure him, while having Graham's gorgeous niece/nurse fall in love with him.

In summary Nightkill is only a slightly better than average novel, though highly readable, that should appeal more to Wilson's fans than others. Final rating: 3.3 stars

4 out of 5 stars Good plot - good characters!.......2004-07-08

Hitman Jack Nacht is the best in the business with a body count of 17 contract murders over his career. When he is hired to "off" a Senator who's getting a little too close to mob affairs, Jake's world is turned upside down when he is shot and paralyzed by a crooked cop who's in on the double cross. As Jake wallows in self-pity and dispair over his quadrapelegic state, he is befriended by (and falls in love with) his rehabilitation nurse, Angel Deschanel. After weeks of rehabiliation to no avail, Angel tells Jake of a radical procedure that her uncle, Dr. Joseph Graham, has performed on paralyzed rats that have allowed them to regain full range of motion. Jake convinces Angel and Graham to try the procedure on him. Unbeknownst to the medical duo, Jake's motivation for the surgical procedure is to help him regain the use of his limbs so that he can extract his revenge on HIS conspirators.

The book is fast-paced and well-plotted. And, while the surgical procedure used to help Jake regain his movement is more than a little far-fetched, if the reader can overlook that bit of "medical fiction", he or she will find themselves immersed in a very strong story.

Recommended to the fans of Michael Crichton and Robin Cook because of the medical aspects of the book and to the fans of Clive Cussler and Jack DeBrul because of the "heroic" aspect of the book.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......1999-10-09

                        Book Description

When humans arrived on Maras Mantia, home of dwarves, elves, and all the other old races, they raped the land of its soul and magic. And, now the Orcs, whom Earthlings hunted down and slaughtered like beasts of the field, may be the chosen creatures destined to win peace for all..."Wall to wall action, undercurrents of dark humor...gritty, fast paced..."--David Gemmell, author of the bestselling Drenai series.

                        2 out of 5 stars Noble, disciplined, good-guy Orcs. -- Yech!!.......2007-01-07

The Orcs were always my absolute favourite part of the universe that J.R.R. Tolkien created for his unforgettable fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. So I was pretty excited when I found out that here were not just 1 or 2, but 3 WHOLE books devoted solely to them in which they were the main characters. I couldn't wait to read them!

But I was crushingly disappointed when I started reading and realized that these Orcs were nothing like the charmingly cutthroat ones infesting Tolkien's world, and Stan Nicholls had instead chosen to make his Orcs noble goody-goodies.

Instead of Tolkien, Nicholls seems to take for his inspiration here the countless works which seek to depict Native North Americans and other less developed peoples as some kind of "noble savages". And in opposition to this, we have here the one-dimensionally villainous Humans who encroach upon the vast open spaces across which these nobly high-minded Orcs have roamed free since time immemorial.

The Humans are divided into the Mansis who worship many gods (ie. the Pagans), and the Unis who worship just one god (ie. this universe's Christians). It is the Unis who carry out massacres on helpless Orc villages in the name of their religion (again shades of early North American history) and plot to take over the entire world.

By contrast, the Orcs in this book are depicted as highly disciplined, professional warriors who operate by a strict code of honour. They address each other respectfully by military rank, and obey orders carefully and precisely. -- NOTHING like the wild and chaotically dangerous hordes of Tolkien's Mordor.

And worst of all, with the way that Stan Nicholls writes dialogue, the way his Orcs speak is also NOTHING like the wonderfully vile vibe we get from the language that Tolkien so carefully crafted. In fact, one of the BIGGEST complaints I had while reading this book was that due to the dialogue (very modern, colloquial English), I kept having images of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles popping into my head instead of Orcs. -- VERY annoying!!!

About the only character who did live up to my expectations of nastiness for this book was the evil half-Human/half-Reptilian queen who has enslaved and now rules over our heroic Orcs. But much like the "evil" Humans, she is only depicted quite superficially and is just used as a heavy to highlight the oh-so-goody-twoshoes qualities of Nicholls' Orcs.

Overall I had the impression that this was a book that tried to carefully sanitize the Orcs to make them acceptable role models for potential young readers. But if this book might seem to be intended for young readers, then I should also warn you that it unexpectedly included some explicit (and gory) sexuality, so it's not exactly a kids' book either.

I should confess that this book ended on such a cliffhanger that even though I didn't particularly like it, I did pick up the second book just to find out what happened.

But still, all I can say is if you expect to find the same kind of deliciously evil Orcish rabble as you loved in the Lord of the Rings, you will probably be just as disappointed as I am with this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2005-04-18

At first aproach i was slightly wary of the book, i mean, orcs? heroes? noble creatures? And yet, as you progess through the book, you begin to feel great empathy for these natural-born warriors, who, since there birth have been forced to fight for masters they disagree with, as blind servants, with no say in their own destiny. Suddenly, they have choice, and the opputunity to decide for themselves what their next move will be, not just to be told, and carry out their orders or face certain death. Their journey, and the enemies they face in all directions will have you not only understanding their way of life, but rooting for them, holding your breath, and hoping this next fight will not be their last. It's a book that sucks you in and won't let go, although you might want to harden your stomach to some of the....grosser details.....it's fast-paced, action packed, gritty, and more often than not, very funny. This is a worth edition to any fantasy reader's collection.

                        5 out of 5 stars great.......2004-08-07

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and skillfully written.......2003-03-25

3 out of 5 stars A good book, though a little annoying at times.......2001-07-23

I must admit that writting from the Orcs point of view is a good idea. But Im affraid that Stan does'nt pull it off particulary well. He strays from the traditional orc charater too much, having them sing of fair orcish ladies and the such.

All books (it is said) have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Not so in this case. The entire story seems the "middle", completely lacking a begining or end. That means that there was no final battle, and the book ended abruptly.

There are good points however. The beginning chapter is so gripping that it will probably motivate you to read half the book in one sitting. Its fast paced and delivers a lot of action through out. The characters are a little cold, but when it comes to a battle, Stan directs them well.

It's worth checking out if you intend to spend time reading the entire series. It does leave you with the incentive to buy the next novel by leaving you on a cliff hanger at the end of the book.

4 out of 5 stars More than you would expect, and then some.......2006-07-25

Finally we're introduced to various cleansing options that won't cost us a fortune, force the average person to undergo grueling, intensive dietary changes of drinking only orange and pear juice for sixty days while walking five miles every other hour. Instead, here's something realistic, not overwhelming, something the average person looking to be healthier can grasp onto and not leave feeling lazy and discouraged. Vukovic inspires, making it seem easy, genuine, and sincere.

Even if you chose to overlook the different cleansing suggestions, there's enough information here to satisfy anyone. From diet to the lungs to the skin, essential oils, herbs, and nutrition are discussed. Hydrotherapy has its own chapter, as does breathing and relaxing exercises. All great stuff sometimes skimmed over too briefly in other works. Even stretches and exercises to increase detoxifying and relaxation are given - with illustrations.

Vukovic speaks with enough conviction to show she knows her stuff - and believes in it, helping the reader understand and believe as well. It's addictive stuff here, it all makes sense, and it's fascinating. Easy to read and full of need-to-knows, if you're in the market for a cleansing book, this is one you need to keep an eye on. Much mroe than a simple single-minded 'program'.

I wanted this book to go on and on. It contains everything from what to eat, how to excersize, beauty and inner peace. There are many things that you can apply to your daily life, changing many habits for the better. I use it as a reference book to find remedies for ailments or just the right recipe for a relaxing bath. I hope Ms. Vukovic is planning another book for the future.

I really love this book! It is concise and to the point, yet gental and easy to read. Love it! Definately worth the modest price of it. This book will help everyone in your family, you and everyone you know! Highly recommended.
