Book Description
At the newly restored Dolphin Theatre, murder takes center stage
The once-dilapidated Dolphin Theater, now restored to its former glory, is open again-and all of London is buzzing about its new play, The Glove, inspired by the discovery of a genuine Shakespearean glove. But on one unfortunate evening, the Dolphin opens its doors to the harshest critic of all: death. Now Inspector Roderick Alleyn must find out who stole the scene with a most murderous act.

Not to be confused with HAND IN GLOVE.......2006-01-03
"Mayde by my father for my sonne on his XI birthedy and never worne butte ync"
- note purportedly written by William Shakespeare, accompanying an elegant child-sized glove
If the reader expects a conventional puzzle, this book may disappoint; it's a novel deeply concerned with showing the life of a working theatre during a major production. The crime (which is all the more shocking for the extended development) erupts into the story a third of the way through the book, and serves to bring the characters under a searching examination as well as to set the mystery on its way. As in some of Marsh's other theatrical mystery novels, life off stage is often a distorted reflection of the current production, and players who die on stage may well face death off it.
Peregrine Jay and his flatmate Jeremy Jones are both theatre professionals, but on the production side rather than as actors, one as a director and sometime playwright, the other as a designer - and as their flat is directly across the river from the dilapidated Dolphin Theatre, Peregrine eventually notices it and wangles his way inside to sightsee under the guise of the theatre's ancient "for sale" notices. (Apart from having been out of use as a playhouse for many years, it was damaged in the Blitz and never repaired.) In his fascination with the decayed splendor of the building, Peregrine falls through a hole in the stage into a well of filthy rainwater.
Peregrine's accident proves to be a lucky break; the theatre's landlord, the eccentric Mr. Conducis, drops in to look the place over before Peregrine drowns, and not only saves him, but reaches out just a little from his shell and carts Peregrine off to be cleaned up by his household staff - possibly just the possessive reaction one might have toward a life one has just saved, mixed with the natural reaction of a man who had himself nearly drowned in a shipwreck some years earlier. With some hot rum in him after the shock of nearly drowning in icy water, Peregrine is unusually eloquent in defence of the Dolphin as a beautiful riverside playhouse that could be recreated as a first-class working theatre in the tradition of the Globe.
From this chance meeting arise two events that will change Peregrine's life: an inspiration for a new play, and a job offer.
Conducis owns an antique child's glove with apparent provenance that it was made for Hamnet Shakespeare, the playwright's only son who died as a boy. From this glimpse grows Peregrine's next play, THE GLOVE, written over the next several weeks as experts (at Peregrine's suggestion) begin officially authenticating the glove. (Peregrine's friend Jeremy, meanwhile, works with him on shadow-casting the play and eventually designing the production, while clarifying for the reader how a passionate expert on such artifacts would react to the possible existence of such a relic, not least to the desirability of keeping it in England, preferably in a museum.)
The job offer materializes when Conducis opts to renovate rather than demolish the Dolphin, and engages Peregrine to help run the rebuilt theatre, which will reopen with the first production of THE GLOVE (eventually helped along with the burst of publicity arising from the unveiling of the real glove).
Much of the interest of the story lies in the story-within-the-story - Peregrine's interpretation of Shakespeare's personal tragedy as shown in THE GLOVE. The living players, for their part, interact in ways that mirror those of their roles on stage, sometimes echoing them, sometimes in contrast. Gertrude Bracey, as Shakespeare's wife, is truly jealous of Destiny Meade, who as the Dark Lady plays her rival for Shakespeare - but over their real-life relationships with Harry Grove, another supporting player. Grove, in turn, likes taking the mickey out of colleagues who consider themselves a cut above him, particularly hot-tempered star Marcus Knight. As for Trevor Vere, the bratty boy playing Hamnet, he really *is* neglected by a performing parent, though she's a professional musician in a small way who seems to make her main living by managing his career. Even the utterly professional Emily Dunne as Shakespeare's sister reflects her role as the one kind of woman Shakespeare could've got along with, as she wins the heart of the real playwright - whom she won't date, as Peregrine's currently her boss.
In a play with less prestige attached, the cast might disintegrate amid the stresses generated by Knight's egotism, Grove's teasing, various players' attempts to upstage one another as scenes are blocked out, and general mayhem over romantic tangles. However, THE GLOVE is earmarked for success, so the cast remains in their pressure-cooker as the theatre reopens in a blaze of publicity with its namesake prominently on display.
Then six months into the play's run, Mr. Conducis announces that the real glove is to be sold to an American collector, and hell is let loose. The glove's special case is smashed open on its last night in the Dolphin, as is the head of the theatre's night watchman (who has been quietly developed as an appealing character to that point, making the crime doubly horrible). To cap it off, young Trevor apparently witnessed the crime and was badly injured. Alleyn is called in thanks to his experience in similar cases, and sets out to open the secrets of all hearts with his knack for extracting confidences under questioning.
I recommend the unabridged audio edition narrated by James Saxon, as well as his reading of its sequel, LIGHT THICKENS. As with much of Marsh's work, the story particularly shines when performed rather than simply read on the page.
Short on Mystery but Long on Excellent Writing.......2002-04-24
Although it is a bit short on actual mystery, KILLER DOLPHIN is probably the best-written of Marsh's novels set in the theatrical world, offering a sharply-written peep behind the curtain into a way of life that combines creativity, hysteria, obnoxious egos, and unexpected self-discipline.
On a whim, a promising young director tours a dilapidated theatre and almost falls to his death, only to be unexpectedly rescued by the property's eccentric and incredibly wealthy owner. The incident sets in motion a chain of unexpected events: the property owner, who is in possession of a glove made by William Shakespeare, rennovates the theatre and installs the young man as artistic director--who in turn writes a play inspired by the Shakespeare glove--which is in turn displayed to promote the play. But with such a valuable artifact in the mix, theft and murder are inevitable.
Marsh writes this particular novel with remarkable brilliance--so much so that the slightness of the story is actually rather beside the point. KILLER DOLPHIN is a remarkably well-written work, and should be required reading for all Marsh fans.
Good Theatrical Mystery.......2001-04-17
In "Killer Dolphin", an Inspector Alleyn mystery, Ngaio Marsh takes her celebrated detective into the world of the theatre: The Dolphin Theatre, to be exact. Alleyn himself makes a late appearance; for the first part of the book, the protagonist is Peregrine Jay (originally from New Zealand), a playwright and theatrical director who becomes caught up in theft, murder, betrayal, and even romance. The crime revolves around a glove reputed to belong to the son of the greatest English playwright (I won't spoil it!) and its connection to a shadowy billionaire. By the time Alleyn appears, Jay has witnessed backstage romance, intrigue, and mercurial tempers that threaten the production and possibly even the actors' lives. Marsh captures the theatrical world well, and expresses the diverse personalities and creativity that flourish on the live stage. She also delivers suspense and just enough romance to satisfy the reader without detracting from the main plot and character development. A good diversion.
Dolphin is a dog.......2000-11-27
This is one which people who don't care about the puzzle may enjoy, as there is a lot of theater detail. But the plot is limp and dull. One her rare failures.
Mystery and the Theatre.......2000-11-04
This is my second Ngaio Marsh book. It starts with a director who is also a playwright visiting a theatre long unused. Unusual circumstances introduce him to a mysterious and very wealthy individual who helps him restore the theater and provides inspiration for a play. The book is a wonderful look into theatre. The play is new and the book follows the introduction of the actors and the staging of the production. The reader can explore the atmosphere of backstage and the actors personalities. The murder and the introduction of Inspector Alleyn come into the story after all the atmosphere has been laid. This book is part of a series, but stands on its own with its own characters and atmosphere. The central character of this story is the director/playright rather than the detective. The detective and the reader are both visiting another world and are guided by the character who understood it best. I look forward to exploring this writer's world again.

An informative pictorial look at whales ,and dolphins.......2006-10-27
This book shows the different kinds of whales and dolphins. It also gives detailed information on their present situation including their endangerment. It is a book which clearly aims to be more than a simple illustrative guide but to make the case for protecting these living wonders of nature.

Read the incredible saga about the orca whale who starred in the movie, "Free Willy." This is Keiko's never-before-told true story based on his communications with Bonnie Norton. Although a gallant attempt was made to return him to the wild, Keiko repeatedly communicated his desire to be with people. Keiko Speaks is a chronological account of Keiko's conversations beginning with Bonnie's first visit to see him at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in 1997. Their relationship continues through Keiko's four years in Iceland, his amazing swim to Norway and finally, his last communication in 2003, again asking that he be allowed to be with people. From Keiko's perspective, hear how he felt about being set free, his words of wisdom about people and animals, and his "Message To The World." Keiko was a magical being who touched the hearts and lives of millions of people around the world, and now may touch yours.

Amazing, touching and sad.......2005-05-24
My boyfriend contacted Bonnie Norton awhile back and told her he was taking me on a suprise trip to Washington and the Puget Sound area. I wanted to thank you, Bonnie, so much for the copy of Keiko Speaks you sent to me. It means so much to know his story in his own words. After reading the book, I went out and bought Communicating with Whales: An Orca's Perspective by Mary Getten and read it straight throughout the night (here's to Lolita!).
Thank you for caring the way you do, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such a wonderful friend and shoulder to cry on for Keiko when he was losing so much.
I hope this book touches thousands as it has touched me. I hope one day I could help the whales to be understood as you have done :) The orcas have always been my life ever since I was a child, sometimes it feels like they're my soul.
I know Keiko appreciated every second of help and love you gave to him.
Thank you for being his voice.
Thanks for everything,
~Lisa

Keiko is the orca whale that starred in the movie "Free Willy". Keiko Speaks is a true story based upon Keiko's communications with Bonnie Norton, beginning with their first meeting at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in 1997. Their's was a relationship that continued for the next four years as Keiko's trainers and aquarium personnel tried repeatedly to return him to the ocean. Here related are Keiko's four years in Iceland, his incredible swim to Norway, through to his last communication in 2003 when he again repeated an often expressed desire to remain with people. Keiko Speaks is especially recommended reading for animal rights activists, fans of Keiko from his film aquarium appearances, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in animal/human communications.
Keiko died of a broken heart..........2005-02-10
I believe this book is an important read for anyone who ever loved or cared about Keiko. So many people wanted him to be free, but it was quite clear that he wanted to be with people. I only wish his care-takers would have honored his wishes. For those of you who are skeptics about animal communication, please open your mind and your heart. Animals are not underlings...they are equals and MUST be respected. They are not our property! They give so much of themselves to us and it's time we give back. I love Keiko very much and this book absolutely broke my heart and made me cry. Even though the book filled me with devastation for what we did to Keiko, I am very glad I read it. Now I know his true story and he has such a beautiful, important message to share with the world. He was such a special, loving, and beautiful creature who deserved everything good we could give to him. I believe now that the mission to set him free bordered on cruelty. He died of a broken heart...alone! How could we treat such a wonderful creature in such an apalling way. All he wanted to do was give his love to the world...and we denied him everything he wanted. I love you forever, Keiko. Rest in peace knowing that your story is being shared with the world. It's not too late!
Keiko's Frustration.......2005-01-28
I have read the book and it was very emotional for me. With all of Keiko's own body language and behavior it was VERY apparent what he wanted...to be with people. Keiko was a true free spirit with a purpose to HELP us understand his world. I could feel his frustration after every attempt to get his desires fulfilled failed. Keiko's human bonding was of our own doing and we should have honored his desire to stay with us. He asked so little. The fact that he died alone breaks my heart. The book touched me in so many ways and was very inspirational.

Only because..........2003-04-25
I think the editorial process must have been skipped in this book. Although it's great to have all of my favorite characters back in one book a *lot* of the names are spelled wrong. I saw someone else said that Aylinn and Kethan are cousins. I don't remember that from The Jargoon Pard at all so I guess people do forget some things.
Editor, please?.......2001-06-04
I, too, had suspicions that Norton was not the sole author of this book. Or at least, she didn't reread a lot of her previous stuff when she wrote it, because discrepancies abound. There are names misspelt (Joison?), people's appearances and coloring change, changing backstories, etc. etc. Some things were just plain inaccurate. For instance, Kethan says that he and Aylinn are not related by blood, when in fact they are cousins, according to "The Jargoon Pard". And in that book, his nature gifts were read as "Magician" where here he is Warrior. And so forth. We don't get much backstory on Firdun and Uta, either. It feels rushed, and repetitive. There are still some good things, though, and it is a must-read, I guess, for fans. But doesn't she have an editor? A lot of the mistakes could have been caught at the editing stage, and the carelessness looks like indifference to the fans of the books.
The Best of the Best.......2000-11-22
Every character from all of the Witch World books come together to defeat a final evil and to close the gates to all other worlds. Told in four seperate tales that are hard to stop reading and introduce some new memorable characters. This book is supposedly the last to Norton's great 30 year running series and is the most classic of her classic tales. Will be loved by all of Norton's fans, but I do not recommend reading this book if you have not read at least one of the other Witch World books.
All of my Favorite Witch World Characters Finally Meet.......2000-07-12
All of my favorite characters from all of Andre Norton's previous 'Witch World' volumes meet in this volume. I've read all of her previous (solo) Witch World volumes at least three times each, and my very favorites, probably nine or ten times (the first four WW novels plus 'Year of the Unicorn'). Therefore, I feel qualified to comment on Norton's use of her previously developed characters in this volume. They came across as wooden: like someone had found a set of puppets in an old trunk in the attic, dusted them off, and strutted them across a very familiar stage. I was disappointed (to say in the least). Here were all of my old friends, together at last, and acting as though they would really rather be somewhere else.
However, even if I'd known in advance that I was going to be disappointed, I still would have read the book, just to find out how Hilarion, Simon Tregarth and his family, and the Were-riders were getting along. All of you real Witch World fans will have to do the same. Buy the book. Read it. Bid Witch World 'Hail and Farewell'.
More unsolicited advice for old Norton fans: Don't buy any of the imitation Witch Worlds that were authored by collaborators, even if Norton's name appears on the cover. No matter how good the writing, it's not Norton and it's not Witch World.
Superb! traditionmal Andre Norton quqlity.......1999-07-09
To critique an Andre Norton book, one must critique Ms. Norton. She is a most remarkable and compassionate woman, the very finast of story tellers ( every sentence and page are action-filled with no "apologetic"explanmatory paragraphs that insult the reader's intelligence and delay the plot; every page continues the plot with no meandering and, Ms. Norton knows how to end a story. It crescendos to the end; it does not dribble. She, and the 100+ books she has solo-authored aremagnificent.Ward of the Witch World continues this tradition. Most all the characters and locations from other epics are brought together, and there are at least three separate tales combined; a feast for the Witch-World lover. The characters are well vexposed, internally and externally. Thwew is perhaps more "spirituality" accorded to them but it does not slow the plot pace. Each sentence is so packed with the explanmatory verbs, adjectives and gerunds. New is the flavor of romanmce between several of her characters; not awkwardly as some of her co-authors have attempted, but "neatly". Also, there are still threads left untied, hopefully allowing for further Witch Word stories.
