Book Description
William Lowell Kane and Abel Rosnovski, one the son of a Boston millionaire, the other a penniless polish immigrant-born on the same day near the turn of the century on opposite sides of the world-are brought together by fate and the quest of a dream. Two men - ambitious, powerful, ruthless - are locked in a relentless struggle to build an empire, fueled by their all-consuming hatred. Over sixty years and three generations, through war, marriage, fortune, and disaster, Kane and Abel battle for the success and triumph that only one man can have....
Customer Reviews:
Great family saga.......2007-09-30
This novel includes some of my favorites: a good family saga, a rags to riches immigrant story, plenty of intrigue, tension filled page turners, and a twist at the end that would shock even O. Henry. Kane & Abel are two characters who are equally likeable and dislikable and are so much alike they should be friends instead of enemies. The storytelling's great, the dialogue natural, the historical and the pacing both great. The only thing to dislike is how frustrated these characters will make you in the end!
One of the best of Jeffrey Archer.......2007-07-08
William Kane and Abel Rosnovski are both born at the same time on opposites sides of the world and under different circumstances.
In 1906, William is born to a wealthy, socially prominent Boston family and loses his father on the Titanic in 1912. He then is raised by his mother.
Abel is born in the woods in Poland to an unwed impoverished woman who dies during childbirth. The two men have a difficult time trying to succeed in life but for totally different reasons.
Abel is found in the woods between the legs of his dead mother by a young hunter who takes pity on him and carries him home to be nursed by his own mother.
The war with Germany and Russian occupation of Poland presents a problem for Abel. He escapes the concentration camps but stows away on a ship which is rat infested and comes to America to make his dream come true.
He finds out before he leaves Poland that he is the son of royalty but the occupation of Poland makes it impossible for him to claim any inheritance. He goes into the business of hotel chains.
Meanwhile, young William Kane is living a luxurious life as the surviving son of a rich banker, attending the most elite schools, and making substantial scholastic achievements.
The two men cross paths and bitter wars start out for Abel especially, as he has worked hard for everything he has accomplished and feels as though William Kane has had the easy American life. The paradox to this is very touching. I cried when I realized what was really happening in the end.
I recommend this book as a must read!
Absolutely Fantastic!!.......2007-06-22
"Kane and Abel" would seem to be a story about nothing -- the lives of two men from birth to death. There are no car chases. No secret societies. No political intrigue. It's just the story of two men, their differences, and their similarities. And it's amazing.
Jeffrey Archer is a gifted storyteller. In the hands of any other, this book would have been drab and boring. The story opens with the birth of each man, and the book tracks their lives through accomplishments and failures. Ordinarily, this would be dull. After all, how interesting is the life of one man, let alone two, if they are not famous or a spy or something? Yet somehow, Archer keeps the reader engaged. The chapters alternate between the two characters. Every time I finished a chapter about one, I was disappointed about moving on to the other. But within two paragraphs, I was engrossed in the other's story. I could not put the book down. It is a wonderful story. You absolutely must read it.
Great Author, Great Book........2007-06-18
What a great book. Jeffrey Archer proved himself a superb storyteller. This is my first Archer's book and I'm looking for the next. He knows very well how to keep you interested in the plot and in William's and Abel's saga. You should read it. It's a satisfaction guarantee.
Not high art, but a definite page turner.......2007-06-01
I read this book on the advice of my mother-in-law, and I was not disappointed. It's a real page-turner, and I now realize why Lord Archer has sold so many books (actually, his own life rivals any of his fictional characters for intrigue, courtroom drama, adultery and obsession). Kane and Abel is not high art--the characters are a bit two-dimensional, their motives a bit thin--and the big "secret" of the book was immediately apparent to me. I wondered often why the main character involved didn't make it known early on as it would have solved the whole conflict, but then, I suppose, we would have missed out on the second half of the book. Anyway, Archer writes in the tradition of John Grisham, Sidney Sheldon, or perhaps Howard Fast. He's a consummate story-teller, and this book makes perfect summer reading.

Book Description
Delilah Brown, formerly nothing more than a girl from the hood-wanna be superstar, now finds herself on top of the world and the music charts. Living the so-called American dream, Delilah is proof that all good things come to those who wait. But when this pop phenom is found dead, she only proves that all good things come to an end. There are too many whispering rumors and circumstances surrounding her death, and too little time to determine the facts. Was it an accident? Was it murder? The list of suspects grows as Delilah's gangster rapper boyfriend is one of the first to be blamed. But, then there is her incarcerated jealous ex-boyfriend. Could he have anything to do with it? Not to mention her envious former group members that she had left behind to become a solo act. Last, but not least, there is her cruel record executive who couldn't stand to see her in the arms of another man. Just when it seems as though the case is about to turn as cold as the dead diva's body, her grieving grandmother stumbles upon her diary. The pages of Delilah's intimate thoughts are just as intriguing and suspenseful as the pages of this explosive novel. Diva gives readers an eye-opening glimpse into the lavish world of a music megastar. It proves, as the old saying goes, that everything that glitters ain't gold.

man this book was a WASTE of $10.20!! Do NOT buy this book. you WILL be disappointed, for real!! tha title iz what sells, but tha inside??...jus do yourself a favor and save your money.
Readable.......2006-01-05
Not a Terri Woods. Diva is a suspenseful novel about who murdered Delilah through the pages of her diary read by her grandmother.Could not understand how they can up with such a strange ending.
Don't Torture Youself.......2005-12-12
This is by far and away the worst Triple Crown book ever. I don't know how a book can be published with words like open being mispelled. The book was double spaced which I really don't understand and I found that truly distracting. From page one I knew I wasn't going to like the book. But I was very bored and finished it anyway in 3 hours. The writing style is so simple it seems like its for a person in grammar school. There was no real plot. No interesting characters. And an another major problem the book would talk about Detective so and so for seven pages and the next paragraph it would switch to another character's perspective. There was no transitioning between different characters stories. The ending was stupid. Surprising but stupid. Please don't waste 15 dollars and I wouldn't even recommend borrowing it from the library. This is the worst Triple Crown book ever.
Interesting!?!.......2005-11-26
This book was interesting to me. It is told through a girl's diary. Her grandmother reads her diary after her sudden death that was a car accident, but turned out she was murdered. Throughout the book you want to blame everyone, but the one you least expect is what gets you. I liked it, for Kane and Able's I guess, first fiction novel, ti was coo. I wouldn't buy it though.
The Worst Book I have read!.......2005-06-27
The book Diva did not interest me. I threw the book away after only reading about 100 pages. the book was slow and was not worth the money i payed for it. I would not recommend this book to anybody.

Book Description
Now comes a tough, gritty, neo-noir novel from world-renowned No Limit rap stars Kane & Abel. Based on true events, Eyes of a Killer is the riveting story of a teenager from a New York ghetto who moves to New Orleans to start over, only to find himself chewed up and spit out by the Crescent City's powerful, drug-infested underworld. Behind Enemy Lines is the chilling tale of a young Gulf War veteran who returns to Los Angeles and becomes entangled in a weapons-smuggling operation that eventually destroys every bond of true friendship and love that he's ever known. Together, these two novellas represent a new era in urban noir fiction. The writing of Kane & Abel will stand alongside the work of classic noir novelists Iceberg Slim and Donald Goines as testament to the horrific underbelly of urban America.

CANT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2000-06-18
It can't get any better than this! When I found out that Kane and Abel had wrote a novel I begged my mom to get it for me b/c I've hardly heard of a rapper/writer. Specially at the level that Kane and Abel are at. This book blew me away from the beginning to the end. I'm black but i'm not from the hood or any ghettos and i believe that anybody can read this book. Gangbangers, adults, teenagers, nerds, it doesn't matter. If you can't relate to the harsh reality of this world then maybe you don't need to read it but i loved it. Whenever someone talks about books I always mention this one becasue it stays in my mind when I think about "my greatest books" list. The two stories in this book are completely different but they are both tight. Just go cop it, believe me.~~Special K

The Devil's Workshop
Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2007-06-22
Even if you don't recognize Stephen J. Cannell's name, you probably know his work - his list of credits includes television shows as diverse as "The Rockford Files," "Hunter," "The A-Team," "Silk Stalkings," and "The Commish." The multitalented Cannell is also a successful novelist, having penned four bestsellers in the last four years. Seemingly loath to repeat himself, Cannell tackled a different subject each time - The Plan examined presidential politics, Final Victim focused on the exploits of a brilliant serial killer, King Con featured a family of con artists, and Riding the Snake explored the workings of Chinese organized crime.
Cannell's latest,The Devil's Workshop, tells the story of newlywed Stacy Richardson, who, as the novel opens, is about to take her qualifying oral exam for her doctorate in microbiology. Stacy's world is turned upside down when she receives the news that her husband, Max, a research scientist at the Army Medical Facility at Fort Detrick, Maryland, has committed suicide. Refusing to accept the Army's story, Stacy infiltrates the installation and discovers that the Army is lying about Max's death. Prevented from investigating further by the head of the project, the zealous Admiral Zoll, Stacy vows to uncover the truth behind her husband's death and about the top-secret biological weapons she suspects the Army is developing at Fort Detrick.
Based on discussions she had with Max prior to his death, Stacy theorizes that the Army is working with prions, proteins that, when ingested or injected, eventually attack the brain, causing symptoms similar to those of mad cow disease. Her fears prove to be more mundane than the reality: Admiral Zoll and his chief scientist, a lunatic named Dexter DeMille, have designed a prion-based weapon that targets specific ethnic groups.
Things go from bad to worse when the East Texas town of Vanishing Lake is accidentally exposed to the weapon. During the ensuing confusion, DeMille is kidnapped by white supremacists who plan to use the weapon to eliminate so-called "inferior" races. Stacy forms an unlikely alliance with a hobo named Lucky Cunningham, an ex-Marine who witnessed the "cleansing" of Vanishing Lake by an embarrassed military, and Buddy Brazil, a cocaine-snorting Hollywood mogul whose profligate son accidentally falls victim to the prions. Together, they struggle to expose the military and to prevent the white supremacists from carrying out their plans for genocide.
Cannell's scriptwriting roots are evident on every page - put the narrative in the present tense and the dialogue in screenplay format, and The Devil's Workshop would read like the script of Will Smith's next star vehicle. Even so, that's not necessarily a bad thing, because, at his core, Cannell is a consummate storyteller. Although he does make some mistakes (his penchant for creating characters with alliterative names like Sylvester Swift, Sid Saunders, Randall Raider, and Buck Burger is especially annoying), the book is still a great read - its serpentine plot, over-the-top action scenes, colorful characters, and snappy dialogue make The Devil's Workshop a guilty pleasure, a reading experience akin to watching a well-executed action flick. If you want great literature, pick up a copy of Anna Karenina. If you're looking for stellar entertainment, you'll find a plentiful supply in The Devil's Workshop.
A colorful read likable characters.......2007-05-13
I like Cannell, he writes with a visual sense. Our knowledge of his characters develop along the way. This time out we rode on the rails with hobos and lunatics set to destroy us all. Always fast paced likable an enjoyable read. I hate 5 stars I would prefer to keep that for the 10 best books I have ever read but this system doesn't work that way so this was fun and worth the time.
This book is a must read!.......2004-03-04
The Devils Workshop is my all time favorite book. It ties together so many different subjects: science, love, action... It's so easy to get hooked on, I've read it at least ten times...and I'm still not bored of it. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who loves to get lost in the action and emotion of a great book.
A Whole Lot of Moving.......2003-10-14
As I finished this novel (it is a novel, it's part of the title) I was struck by how many times the author "moved" his characters. These characters never ran or walked, the always "moved." As in, Cris moved to the door. Not a big problem but after several hundred pages it became annoying.
The story is ok, nothing special, more like a TV movie. The real problem is the timing. On one page Cannell says it is 8:30am and a bright crisp day and on the next page it is pitch black with dark clouds covering the moon. Later the evil folk outrun a train, on foot, and through mountains.
So, if you can get past the moving and timing then the story is passable. Not award winning, but with some character changes it could have been an A-Team episode.
Disappointing.......2003-06-07
I think Stephen J. Cannell is wonderful, however, this is a real "snoozer".

Not Bad.......2007-02-13
This Batman book was my first introduction to any Elseworlds storylines (I guess I should get Gaslight now) and I wasn't disappointed. I'm not saying it was awesome but not bad. The art was good once you get used to it and the storyline isn't too bad either. I like the fact that the writer gave Bat-Man (as he is called) more flaws than the one we're used to such as inablities to pick locks or change his voice when Bat-Man. Batman is portrayed as a rich man with a suit and a mission. No kung-fu, master detective and two gadgets in the whole book gave him a realistic look. And it made Houdini look better too. The plot wasn't too bad but could've been better but I like the portrayal of Joker. So . . .if you want something you don't have to think too much about and would like to see a Batman that is a little bit more realistic (or what he was probably like when he first started in contemporary books) then pick this up.
Houdini by Gaslight.......2004-05-18
Not unusual for Houdini, actually. What is unusual is his involvement with a certain man in a bat costume. Yes, another Elseworlds Batman story in the world of Gotham By Gaslight.
This story is narrated by Houdini. An interesting twist has been added to Batman lore. If Houdini is a contemporary, then Wayne could not study his posthumous writings. Thus Batman is not very good at picking locks or making escapes. I do not want to give away the plot other than it involves missing children and a very interesting twist on the Joker (who shows up in style but not name). It also adds an interesting twist to the life of Houdini, a man who spent a great deal of time debunking the supernatural.
Entertaining Elseworlds diversion.......2004-02-17
Veering away from the usual superhero meets other company's superhero crossover, DC has Batman meeting up with a real historical figure - Harry Houdini. Although their adventure (they're after a smiling serial killer) is pretty much what is expected, it is the atmosphere and art that makes it memorable. Read this back to back with Gotham By Gaslight and you'll be clamoring for a Batman/Sherlock Holmes crossover.
A real stinker.......1999-08-03
Bad art and a weak plot dont waste your time

The best home herbal I've found so far.......2007-04-25
David Hoffman's "The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal" is one of those rare books I keep nearby, as I'm constantly referring to it. Developed for the layman, Holistic Herbal provides sufficient overview of various herbal remedies to allow one to get their feet wet and feel competent while doing so. Part 1 of the book is a mere 16-page overview of the holistic concept - short, but if you weren't already sold on it, you wouldn't be reading the book, would you? Part 2 covers the practical aspects of herbalism, including the collection and preparation of the various herbs. This is one the areas where the work shines through, as Hoffman's descriptions and photographic accompaniments clearly and succinctly illustrate the process of making not only infusions, tinctures and decoctions, but also capsules, lozenges and suppositories. The latter part of this section also familiarizes the reader with the technical terms associated with herbalism, from abortifacients to vulneraries, in clear layman's terms. Part 3 begins the herbal itself, and its clearly expounded sections will have you referring back to it often. Each page has one to two herbs, with a photograph of the herb in question, a description of the parts used and their preparation, dosages and possible combinations with other herbs for varied therapeutic effects. Seemingly in recognition that this information could overwhelm the layman, Hoffman outlines on page 49 a home herbal medicine chest, with around 30 basic herbs as well as the (minor) equipment one will need in order to make use of them. The therapeutic index which lists the various ailments and their herbal remedies also emphasizes several herbal remedies within each category that are particularly efficacious for the ailment in question.
Herbal medicine.......2007-03-08
This is a comprehensive, authoritative, illustrated guide to herbs. Beautifully illustrated, each oversized page has two herbs per page that includes, the plant family name, common name,a paragraph desribing it's benefits, part used, collection, constituents, actions and preparation and dosage. In this informative book you will find the internal and external uses of herbs. There are over 300 illustrated pictures and an A-Z listing of over 200 herbs. There is a section that explains the systems of the body and some common ailments. Included here you will find which herbs work best to heal the ailment. Many of these herbs have been used by cultures for centuries for prevention of disease by drinking certain tonics or teas to help the various systems of the body. If you are interested in alternative medicine for well-being than this book is for you. There are many things you can take besides a little pill to cure your ills, try some natural medicine. This book is recommended for the beginner as well the seasoned herb practitioner.

What a SUPERB release. This is my medicinal herbal bible; it's quite complete, very nice graphics, and is easy to understand. It sits right next to my magickal herb books and has been an invaluable reference. HIGHLY recommended.

One of the Best.......2003-09-24
I own a later 2002 version of the 1996 book. Except for cover design the content has remained very much the same. That is one of the best available books on herbs and herbology. It shows the herb with a color photograph for those unfamiliar with what each herb looks like. It gives a detailed description of the herb amd exact formulas of how to use it singularly or in combination. There are other features like how to cultivate and dry the herbs and how it relates to a body system. One of the Best herb books available
Well organized information, great pictures.......2003-02-17
The pictures and profiles on the herbs are a pleasure to read and look at. I would have given the book 5 stars, but there is a dearth of safety information for some herbs (e.g. comfrey, coltsfoot, lily of the valley, sassafras)which I feel is a serious omission. Someone just starting to learn about herbs may start consuming them on a regular basis before coming across the safety information elsewhere. Also, in the section on body systems, the recommended herbal recipes are accompanied by symbols which are not explained anywhere in the text (or if they are, the explanation is very well hidden because I can't find it!) Other than that, the book contains a great introduction to how the body's various systems work and also a lot of common sense advice on optimizing health (not just illness prevention). The philosophy of herbal treatment (treating the whole person as opposed to treating a symptom or a disease) is nicely discussed. Also the therapeutic index makes it easy to find herbs that you can try for specific health needs. A nice addition to the herbal library as long as you have other books that offer the safety info that this one lacks!
a useful introduction and reference to herbal medicine.......1999-03-27
This work offers a satisfying introduction to herbalism for the general reader, and is enhanced by useful sections on medical terminology, when to gather herbs, useful addresses, and further reading. Medical practicioners will probably find that the book contains insufficient detail and inadequate references to other literature and experimental data.
The most useful part of this book - and the one offering the clearest exposition of the author's philosphy - is the 4th chapter entitled "Systems of the Body". This is the chapter that a reader with a specific complaint should turn to first. This includes sections on eleven bodily systems, including: the circulatory system; the lymphatic system; the respiratory system; ears, nose, throat and eyes; the reproductive system; and the digestive system.
Taking the digestive system to illustrate the author's approach, the whole section consists of 14 large pages. In the first two pages, the author explains with the help of illustrations the anatomy and function of the digestive system, and then gives general lifestyle advice on prevention of digestive disease. The next two pages are an introduction to the various kinds of herbs for the digestive system, among them bitters, hepatics, laxatives, emetics, demulcants, astringents and anti-spasmodics. The final 10-page subsection is titled "Patterns of Digestive Disease", in which Hoffmann offers his views on the nature of, and possible treatments for, problems as diverse as constipation, anorexia nervosa, mouth ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and gall-bladder inflammation. The herbs mentioned in this chapter can then be looked up in the preceding chapter, a traditional herbal which devotes half a page to each herb, mentioning the parts used; how and when to collect it; its chemical constituents; its actions; and preparation and dosage. I find half a page far too little, but combining this with the information in the rest of the book, the reader will usually find enough to suggest a possible remedy for common complaints - one that will usually require verification by a qualified practicioner.
The rest of the book includes chapters on "the holistic approach" and "practical herbalism". The latter explains how to gather herbs and make herbal preparations; the chemistry of herbs; the action of herbs; suggestions for a basic herbal medicine chest for the home; and a therapeutic index, which gives an alphabetical list of conditions with most of the potentially useful herbs.
