Who told this woman she could write?.......2007-07-05
This is the second book by Dorothea Benton Frank that I've tried to read because I generally like "a lowcountry tale." So sad! Who told this woman she could write? I'm sure she's a wonderful person, but an author she is not. She records every single word that crosses her mind - that is way, way too much. The characters and dialogue were completely unbelieveable. I just had to close the book and say, "No more." It goes back to the library as soon as I can get it there.
Isle of Palms.......2006-12-08
Not my favorite book of Dorthea's. I stuggled to finish it as it sort of drug on. Not a believable story, but entertaining anyway.
Isle of Palms......My favorite place on earth.......2006-09-06
(Short and sweet review). You have to read this book if you've ever been to the Isle of Palms. The characters are entertaining and you feel like you are there, too. I enjoyed this one.
Fun read - just don't get caught up in the details.......2006-07-01
Not Dottie's best, but a fun read anyway. Not exactly believable circumstances or characters. Just read it for entertainment.
Wonderful Author.......2006-06-22
I love all of her books. I am always eager for her next one to come out. She is the type of author that provides great quality reading over quanity. Her books make you smile, laugh and cry,,,, Isle of Palms is a must read.

Book Description
Known for her moving characters and emotional honesty, Mary Alice Monroe brings readers a beautifully rendered story that explores the fragile yet enduring bond between mothers and daughters.
Carette Rutledge thought she'd left her Southern roots and troubled family far behind. But an unusual request from her mother -- coming just as her own life is spinning out of control -- has Cara heading back to the scenic Lowcountry of her childhood summers. Before long, the rhythms of the island open her heart in wonderful ways as she repairs the family beach house, becomes a bona fide "turtle lady" and renews old acquaintances with her mother that she will earn life's most precious lessons -- true love involves sacrifice, family is forever and the mistakes of the past can be forgiven.

FIVE STARS PLUS !!!.......2007-07-17
MONROE IS A WONDERFUL AUTHOR,AND HER NOVELS ABOUT THE LOW COUNTRY IN THE SOUTH ARE SIMPLY CAPTIVATING. SHE AND ANNE SIDDONS MAKES YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SOUTH LOW COUNTRY AND STAY THERE FOREVER. THIS STORY IS WONDERFUL AND IS SO REAL AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS,AND FAMILY MEMBERS SO OFTEN HAPPEN IF PEOPLES LIVES. LOVED THE BOOK !
Great Summer Read.......2007-07-16
The Beach House was a great summer read. I have always wanted to spend
a summer in a beach house on the east coast and this story had me wanting
it even more. Learning about the Loggerhead turtles was an extra
added bonus. Looking forward to reading other Mary Alice Monroe books.
Well written but boring.......2007-06-29
This book is an easy summer read, very well written, with an interesting theme of the loggerhead turtles. However, I found the story itself very uninteresting, nothing beyond what most of us have in our own families.
Carolina family dynamics.......2007-06-22
An odd mix of realistic situations for the main character with an undertone of romance novel in the latter part of the story. The love of coastal nature and realistic, but inspiring, treatment of relationships among the women made this a book my wife and I have given away to others. Definitely light and fun enough to warrant a place in the beach bag for your next trip to the beach house.
The Beach House.......2007-05-29
I read the Beach House and fell in love with the characters. Couldn't wait then to read the sequel. Mary Alice Monroe creates great peolple and educates you at the same time. The turtles were wonderful and so interesting.
Book Description
Named for its abundance of sabal palms, this seven-mile barrier island off the South Carolina coast is a classic beach community. In 1899, Dr. Joseph S. Lawrence dubbed the island the Isle of Palms to attract more tourists. Originally called Hunting Island by the Sewee Indians, the island was frequented mostly by hunters and fisherman. By the early 1900s, Isle of Palms was a popular resort. People came to visit the grand pavilion built by the Sottile family of Charleston and ride the giant Ferris wheel. Beachgoers enjoyed this recreational haven, but the Great Depression stalled the island's activity. Then, in 1944, Charleston attorney J.C. Long bought and developed 1,200 acres, and the island experienced renewed growth. In 1953, the island was incorporated into the City of Isle of Palms. Today, the Isle of Palms is home to more than 4,500 permanent residents and is a vacation destination for thousands of visitors each year. Images of America: Isle of Palms captures the charm of this old beach community.
Book Description

Where is the mount in Mount Pleasant? Who was the Daniel of Daniel Island and what is behind the name I'On? Were bricks ever made at Brickyard Plantation? What famous person dropped in at Snee Farm? These questions and many more are answered in this essential guide to East Cooper life and lore, presented in the time-honored "gazetteer" format, allowing easy reference as well as a great beach-chair read.

really interesting facts.......2006-08-28
If you love IOP, Sullivans Is. and Mt. Pleasant, the way I do, then you will really enjoy all the facts in this books. I found it to be very interesting.
Miles' "Gazeteer".......2006-05-19
This book gives short introductions to the people, places, and events throughout the rich history of Mt. Pleasant and surrounding islands. Although only a glossary of sorts, it is obvious the author is a local who knows her stuff, as each term is defined by the unique way in which it is known today. It also includes a list of hurricanes that struck each year beginning with 1686. Very informative and easy to navigate...

Book Description
Midnight Louie, the best tomcat in the crime-solving business, and his human partner, petite redheaded publicist Temple Barr, are once again in the thick of things in the city of sin. The manager of the Crystal Phoenix, one of Las Vegas's premier vacation spot, has hired Temple Barr to help clean up the hotel's image, but soon more than the Phoenix's reputation is in danger. The phoenix becomes prey to mysterious saboteurs whose little pranks just happen to keep endangering Temple's life. When Temple tangles with ex-priests, local police, FBI agents, obnoxious reporters, and a pasell of semi-reformed mafiosi who wear pastel zoot suits, it's up to Midnight Louie to get her out of knot......before it's too late.

Cat in a Crimson Haze.......2007-07-18
I enjoy all of the Midnight Louie mysteries. I love cats and if you do too, you will definitely like these books. Makes you wonder what our cats really do on their own time!
Louie is a star!.......2003-11-12
Petite PR pro Temple Barr is chagrined when she fails to get her annual invite to submit skits for Las Vegas' annual Gridiron show - and not much happier when she gets a grudging request from the sleazy Crawford Buchanan for some help with the finale. But she can't resist - fabulous show stopping skits are her special forte. And she comes up with a winner.
But soon after her script is submitted, strange and threatening things start happening, including a boobytrapped stair rail that sends Temple and her signature high, high heels hurtling down a flight of steps. As the new PR person for the Crystal Phoenix Hotel, in charge of transforming the place into a casino that reflects family values (a tough assignment for Vegas!) this earns her a phalanx of fabulous Fontana brothers as bodyguards, much to her chagrin. There are at least nine Fontanas, all large and given to picking up petite Temple, who is not only sensitive about her tiny stature but accustomed to operating on her own - with a big assist from Louie. But Louie is also an independent operator and rarely interferes with Temple's routine. The Fontanas - who are a united family personified - overhelm. (But entertainingly.)
Meanwhile, neighbor Matt Devine sets off in search of his stepfather, Cliff Effinger - but he gets a late start. Before the PI he hires can give him his first clue, the body of Effinger falls onto a blackjack table from the casino ceiling. Soon Matt is under suspicion by Lieutenant CR Molina - who is also unhappy that Temple and Devine have discovered her alternate identity as the sultry cafe singer, Carmen.
Biggest problem - Matt is asked to identify the body and can't. He hasn't seen Effinger since the guy deserted Matt and his mother many years before - and time and the netural changes that death wreaks have rendered him not quite recognizable.
Matt wanted the satisfaction of getting some kind of revenge on the cruel stepfather - and instead may be in trouble without having the chance to act.
Suspicions of mob activity abound, especially given the content of Temple's skit, which alludes to the former dominance of the Mafia in Vegas history. But the show must go and - and does, despite a giant heist at the casino down the street that draws any police protection away from the show's arena.
But leave it to Midnight Louie - largely absent from Temple's apartment these days since he is avoiding the petite Caviar, who claims that her true name is Midnight Louise and that she is sworn to get revenge on her dear old dad who deserted her at birth. (Shades of Matt Devine - although Louie has wisely kept his name from his alleged offspring so far.)
Louie has been hanging around the periphery of the Crystal Pheonix keeping an eye out for his dear roommate. On a tour of the dressing rooms he finds a mysterious hidden door that leads to a set of tunnels that suddenly make the dangerous doings that have surrounded the show so far quite clear. Louie manages to lure Temple to the tunnels despite the fact that her big skit is due to begin in moments - and a wild chase through the underground begins - culminating in a crowded ride in a UFO and a grand entrance onto the Gridiron stage by several assorted criminals, hoofers, actors, the fabulous Fontanas, Temple herself. Finally, to huge applause and yet more media attention - Midnight Louie, the hero of the hour steps down from the top of the UFO and into the spotlight. (He can't help it - he simple attracts those cameras.)
The plot is fast paced and filled with tension - and enough comic relief to keep things going. But all is not fluff and fur here. Underneath the entire book is the pervasive theme of family values - those that the Crystal Pheonix wants to display, those that Matt Devine was deprived of because of his stepfather's cruelty and those that Midnight Louise feels that Louie failed to show her family.
The Pheonix comes through - and Louie and Louise come to a wary truce. Only Matt Devine is left dissatisfied - except for a new and blossoming relationship with Temple - and the acquisition of Midnight Louise as a roommate of his own.
The most charming thing about these books is not the fact that Louie speaks - but what he has to say. He talks tough - but he speaks sense, and always has a message that goes surprisingly deeper than one would expect from a mystery of this sort.

Book Description
What happens to us when we die?Is there really an afterlife?Do we possess a soul?Does God exist? For Michael Gabriel, the answers to these questions lie in another dimension, a realm of eternity where there is no concept of time, only pure life force . . . pure existence. And pure evil.Five hundred years ago, the Mayan Popul Vuh prophesized the birth of powerful twins-the sons of Michael Gabriel. White-haired, azure-eyed Jacob, blessed with inhuman physical prowess, intelligence, and insight into the cosmos, knows from birth that he is meant for more. His dark-haired brother, Immanuel, refuses his genetic calling, desiring a normal life. But only the combined powers of the Gabriel twins can resurrect their savior father and save the human race from an eternity of repeating its own self-destruction.There is a third great power upon the earth, born the same day as the twins. Exposed to the uglier side of existence, empowered by her post-human genetics, the beautiful, schizophrenic Lilith will travel down a darker path that leads to Xibalba---the Mayan version of hell. An epic battle of good versus evil will begin . . . and the final fate of the human race will be revealed.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, can't wait for 3rd part of the trilogy!!!.......2007-02-28
I just finished reading Resurrection, and I thought it was great. I am a huge fan of Steve Alten. This is another great book in his collection.
Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS.......2006-12-03
Resurrection compasses many years--from 2012 to 2033, and ultimately deals with the eternal conflict of good versus evil.
The premise begins with a 500-year old prophesy: Hero Twins will be born to fight The Underworld and save humanity from destruction. On December 21, 2012--the end of the Mayan calendar--Jacob and Immanuel are born, both genetically-gifted and azure-eyed. But on the same day another being is born--Lilith. She's just as genetically gifted and azure-eyed as the twins, but, unlike the twins, she's the embodiment of evil. In order to save humanity, the twins must resurrect their father from the underworld, but first they must battle Lilith, whose immense power comes from the Dark Lord himself. Will the twins succeed in fighting off evil and save their father and the world?
Though a fan of Steven Alten's novels, I found this book disappointing. Though the theme is ambitious and the author obviously did a huge amount of research, the myth and legends and how they were interwoven with the plot is sometimes abstract and confusing. I found myself skipping over long "information" paragraphs to follow the story. Unlike MEG and The Loch, where the author revolves the action around a main character the reader can identify with, Resurrection has many characters of equal importance, none particularly sympathetic, making it impossible to identify with just one hero or heroine. That said, this is a novel that might interest those readers passionate about SF mixed with Mayan culture and myth.
A big improvement over Domain.......2006-11-15
When I first bought Steve Alten's Resurrection - based primarily on the back-of-the-book plot summary - I hadn't realized it was a sequel to another book called Domain. In an effort for completeness, I decided to buy and read Domain first...and was really disappointed. Domain was a subpar book and when it came time to read Resurrection, it was with no real enthusiasm; I'd forked over the money, however, so I felt I should give it a shot. I was happy and surprised to find that Resurrection is a far better book than its predecessor.
The story starts off where the first book left off (so if you haven't read that one, there are spoilers ahead). Dominique Vasquez finds herself pregnant with twins. After the world-threatening events of the prior novel, these future children are being regarded as potential messiahs, and even in infancy, it is apparent that there is something special about them. Both are highly gifted, but only Jacob is willing to embrace his abilities. For twin brother Immanuel, his destiny is more of a curse; all he wants is a normal life.
Meanwhile, another child is born at the same time with a background that is a twisted mirror image of the twins. For this girl - with the dangerous name of Lilith - there is the potential for great evil. Twisted by schizophrenia and a childhood filled with a vicious, perverted stepfather, she embraces the dark side easily enough. She is a threat to the twins, who eventually take desperate measures to stay away from her.
As the twins reach adulthood, Jacob prepares for an epic duel that is supposed to resurrect his father Michael (who either died or went to another reality at the end of the last book). It will only work if Immanuel participates, and he is both unwilling and unbelieving.
The story plays with the idea of destiny and time. Are these characters locked into their fates? Are they merely reincarnations about to replay the same story again? The answers to these questions lead to the twists and turns at the end of the story (and into the final book in the trilogy, the upcoming Phobos).
This book is not without its problems. New facts about the characters (especially Michael) seem vaguely inconsistent with the first story. In addition, the final confrontations in the book are somewhat muddled, as the battles are mixed with the warped logic of time travel and false realities. And, as with the first novel, Alten often relies on pseudoscience that has long since been debunked (such as the Bible Code).
But there are good things in this story, too. Overall, the story is well-plotted and the writing much more interesting than the first book. This is a fun tale of good vs. evil. It may be imperfect, but somehow, it works this time, and is a good reward for persevering through Domain.
Great Book, Bad Politics.......2006-10-07
I really enjoyed this book. There is multiple parts of it I disagree with. I do not agree with Alten's perspective on American politics or society, but once you move past his opionion and into the details of the book, you have an amazing story!
Complete, utter Mess.......2006-09-30
What a huge disappointment after reading Domain. Luckily I only borrowed both books from a friend after he saw them on my Amazon wish list. "Domain" was fascinating from start to finish and now my son is enjoying reading it as well, but this... ugh.
How in the world does an author take a concept which he tried to disprove throughout the entirety of the first book and then turns around and makes it a major plot point in the second?!? For those of you who have read it, I'm talking about the Paranoid Schizophrenia.
The book doesn't have the wonder, tension and sense of expectant awe of the first book. The plot seems forced, like something a poor religious author would write when trying to fictionalize the Book of Revelations.
And what was up with that ending?!? Enough to say that it completely nullified everything that came before for me. It's one of those "it never happened" moments in fiction, like "The Fly II" and "Alien 3."
I'll still read "Phobos" when it comes out, of course. I'm just hoping my friend buys it and lends it to me...
Book Description
Poland's strong Catholic faith engendered in its literature a lively awareness of the Devil and a love of the supernatural and the fantastic. These stories are explorations of the extreme in human behaviour, where the bizarre chills the spine, and few authors can match Grabinski's depiction of seething sexual frenzy. The Dark Domain will introduce to English readers one of Europe's most important authors of literary fantasy.

Customer Reviews:
glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder.......2006-02-24
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well. I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.
This books is also wonderful in that it doesn't lable IBS as being "all in your head". It is very objective in describing the many factors that may be causing your IB symptoms. Things like stress, food, fiber, and possible other food triggers.
This book is also short, and doesn't go into a list of supplements you should be taking. It focuses on how to best help yourself, rather than telling you to do #1, #2, or #3, as every body is slightly different. It helps you focus on your symptoms, and what may help to alleviate them.
It is important to understand that IBS in THIS country is often related to the Type A lifestyle, and often times modifing this (by reducing stress, focusing on quality of food choices) often helps. However, things like lactose intolerance and celiac sprue are SEPERATE. You may be lactose intolerant, and by eliminating lactose from your diet you will be fine. However, that may not be a problem for every person suffering from IBS. Same thing with celiac sprue--just because you have IBS does not mean you have celiac sprue. It's VERY important to be honest with your symptoms and treat yourself accordingly.
As a medical professional I believe in western medicine, but I also believe that people need to take responsibility for helping themselves. There is no magic pill or magic cure for everything. Sometimes you have to be patient and go through a little trial and error. This book will help you do just that, but will also help you recognize when you need to revise what you are doing and seek medical attention.
Helped Me Out .......2006-02-15
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.
After spending several thousand dollars over several years to buy the pleasure of having doctors tell me "I don't know, I think we should do more tests" I frankly gave up on the medical establishment's ability to handle IBS cases. (I don't know if they are afraid of lawsuits or what, but none of the doctors I saw offered any useful advice or even tried a therapy or suggested a special diet or anything. Several friends and family members have reported the exact same pattern in modern medicine for IBS and other symptoms, thousands of dollars spent on inconclusive tests with no medical advice or relief. What's going on?? Doesn't eleventy years of supposedly the most stressful schooling in the world equip doctors with any knowledge beyond telling you that some scribbles in some boxes on test results mean absolutely nothing?)
This book does not offer a cure, as there is none for IBS yet apparently. However it tells you how to minimize symptoms in a holistic manner, and for me this actually worked quite well. Five relatively major changes that were included in this book worked for my particular case:
1.) Reduction of stress and balancing my life. This was harder than most people would probably like since for me it involved switching jobs, moving, and temporarily dipping into retirement savings, but quality of life has improved significantly and IBS symptoms reduced commensurately.
2.) Avoiding trigger foods, especially fatty foods, gassy foods, lactose containing foods, and spices. (Sadly, no more Thai and Mexican food, no more ice cream, no more lots of foods but it's worth it.)
3.) Increasing fiber intake. For me whole weat bread does upset my stomach, but a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with Soy Milk every day seems to get the job done.
4.) Eating three regular meals a day. Sometimes hard, especially when my normal response to having particularly bad IBS symptoms was to forgo eating, but this book explains the physiological science as to why this actually makes symptoms worse.
5.) Making exercise a regular habit. I finally feel healthy again.
A lot of this sounds like common-sense stuff, but this book explained why they would work (with other possible strategies for people with different symptoms) and helped me find which foods I could and could not tolerate. With this knowledge I was more committed to seeing the life changes through and with time they improved my condition more than I thought they would.
The sections on how to relax your muscles and your mind through breathing, little physical exercises, and mental techniques are also very helpful.
Since everyone's different I can't promise this book will help you. But with some experimentation this book drastically increased the speed and effectiveness of the lifestyle changes necessary to keep my IBS under control.
SORRY THAT I PURCHASED THIS BOOK .......2005-08-20
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber -- which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!
Excellent Guide.......2004-08-02
This is an excellent guide, giving many details of symptoms, causes, diet change needs, trigger foods, and stress reduction. I refer to it frequently. It has no gender bias that women are the major sufferers of IBS.
INTERESTING TOPIC.......2002-11-08
I certainly do agree on some of the topics mentioned in this book. My understanding as reading this book and also attending at the time a Psycologist, is I think it narrows down yes with some foods you eat, I feel everyone is sensitive to certain foods than others, but what I found very interesting and had a hard time dealing with is to accept the fact that I had IBS. That's the first thing you have to accept. The second is STRESS, what major role that plays on the digestive system. You may not agree, but what I've learned through experience and dealing with stressful situations, yes I do believe this can play a Major Role. I was confinced that stress didn't have a role in this and that I had something wrong with me, even though all my test were coming back fine. I had to accept that I had IBS and handle stressful situations a different way. It could be things from the past, present, or the future.
