Book Description
In the Shadow of the Law is the story of Morgan Siler, a powerful Washington, D.C., law firm that has transformed itself from a traditional practice serving those most in need into a shrewd giant serving the interests of the wealthy. Through the intertwined stories of a pro bono murder case and a class action lawsuit brought against a large chemical company, we meet the fascinating, engaging, and conflicted characters that make up this world: Mark Clayton, the rookie; Walker Eliot, the prodigy; Katja Phillips, the idealist; and Harold Fineman, the brilliant and burned-out partner, leader of the chemical companys defense team. With a thorny and breathtakingly paced narrative, In the Shadow of the Law marks the arrival of a writer who stakes a firm claim to the literary territory of Scott Turow (The Times-Picayune, New Orleans).
Customer Reviews:
One dimensional characters, thin plot, uncomprehensible legalese.......2007-08-19
First - don't bother reading this book if you haven't gone to law school. It won't make one lick of sense. The author dives into the legalese in the first few pages and never looks back. For the legal-minded, Roosevelt uses much the same diction as a law review article or a treatise. If that's your idea of a fun read, then have at it.
Second - Roosevelt's character's are laughable caricatures. There's the managing partner with a heart of stone, the idealistic and spunky heroine, the dim witted but lovable protagonist, the slimy skirt chaser, and the lazy but high-achieving laurel-rester. Roosevelt doesn't even make the slightest effort to develop a single one of these characters beyond the bird's eye, glossed-over snapshot of their respective stereotypes.
Finally, the plot is razor thin and laughably unrealistic. There's little more I can say here without spoilers, but suffice it to say that Roosevelt seems to struggle with the idea any person is capable of being anything other than pure good or evil.
Unique, Realistic Insight into Practice of Law.......2007-04-03
This is not your typical Grisham novel. Author Kermit Roosevelt, who shares the same name as a former CIA operative, busts open the myths surrounding the practice of law. Most media view the law as a battle between light and evil, with truth being the end goal. The reality, which this book reveals, is that civil law is mainly procedure: discovery (figuring out what documents to turn over); protection of property (creating special paper vehicles that protect or hide corporate assets); and the non-violent transfer of money to those who have been harmed. Criminal law is more trial-based, and the genius of this novel is that it juxtaposes a civil case with a criminal case, allowing the reader to see the major differences. However, the criminal case does not redeem the legal profession either, and the reader will be left with the sobering realization that the lawyers are the ones who determine whether justice will occur, and unethical lawyers can easily prevent justice from occurring. One major subtlety--without spoiling the ending--is that the unethical lawyers are actually the ones who save the day, which is made more interesting by the fact that the book's characters are primarily unethical from the beginning. It's a very subtle indictment of the entire legal system, and only one character--a federal judge--ends up looking good.
If anyone is considering applying to law school or has recently started practicing law and is wondering what s/he's gotten himself into, this is a must-read. It seems to be one of the few legal fiction books that lawyers will respect.
What This Book Isn't.......2006-11-14
All set for a thriller of a courtroom novel where the brilliant defense attorney defends a man against an unjust charge of murder, and where a surprise witness enters the scene in the final 20 pages? I'd suggest you look elsewhere. How about this case in In The Shadow Of The Law? Our hard working lawyers take on a case that involves the securitization of assets, a fiduciary duty suit, and some convertible stock.
This is a novel that studies the character of the law, and the characters of lawyers in a very large law firm. A lawyer in the book reflects on the Penn law school motto: "Laws without morals are useless." The book goes on to prove that such is perhaps not the case. One lawyer reflects that we become what we choose to become. He then wonders about what he has become in the last 25 years. A man without a soul perhaps? Someone who has no life other than the firm? Arriving early to work one associate looks up at the wall of glass which is the firm's headquarters and sees faint forms moving about like insects pushing up against the glass.
The preceding paragraph pretty much sums up the author's philosophy. Brief snippets of actual cases appear from time to time, but a lot of the book is taken up with the musings of those insects trapped behind the glass. There is one case thread that wanders through the book that deals with a rather hopeless(?) pro bono case of appealing the death sentence of a murderer, but the rest of the cases deal with civil litigation such as defending a client whose manufacturing plant blew up killing several employees.
I enjoyed this book first of all because it is uniquely different from other novels involving the law. It is about the lawyers, and the profession that they have chosen. Good stuff, stuff that would make anyone think twice about becoming a lawyer. It's also a very well written novel, a true literary work. As for the dull sounding litigation that takes place, well you really don't have to understand everything about involuntary stock transfers to truly enjoy this work of art.
A fine debut.......2006-10-13
Calling this book a legal thriller, while accurate, sells it short. In the Shadow of the Law is a very good novel: it has fully developed and believable characters, and a great plot that will keep you turning the pages. The end it's a little too Hollywood (false identities included), which is the only reason I don't give it five stars, but this is a very enjoyable reading experience.
Amazing.......2006-09-12
I am a lawyer. This is the best book about lawyers I have ever read. Amazing.
Book Description
In a sleepy resort town, Maud Chadwick waits tables at the Rainbow Cafe. Her confidant is Sheriff Sam DeGheyn and what they have in common is obsession. Maude doesn't want her son to leave home, and Sam cannot let go of the unsolved murders of three local women -- or his intuition that the killer is still out there. How these lives intertwine reveals a rich and startling story of parents and children and the pain they cause one another.

A different voice........2005-05-07
This quirky mystery, full of interesting character studies lacks just about everything one has come to love and enjoy about the Inspector Jury series. What is amazing about it is that Ms. Grimes who finds a completely new and different voice and manner and style of writing. If you didn't know this was her book, she'd be the last author you'd guess - but those wonderful verbs are still there!
Dysfunctional.......2005-02-04
This was the first book (may well be the last) that I have read by Ms. Grimes and the title of my review pretty well sums up the entire book--dysfunctional. The book gets off to an extremely slow start and the slow beginning sets the plodding pace of the entire book. Within this book, there does not appear to be a single, solitary character that is not psychotic in one aspect or another; every individual seems to be suffering a mental imbalance in one way or another. Also, she really doesn't 'flesh out' her characters in any other way except for their aberrations and as societal misfits. The entire book seemed to be disjointed. It was as if every time Ms. Grimes was interrupted while writing, she would lose her train of thought and have to start off from a new line of thought when she could begin again. As for her chosen killer psychopath, very little was written to develop the killer's character; and there was a failure to demonstrate the motivation of the killer. Although the killer was depicted as being in more or less of a mesmerized state during the killing process, at least one murder was out of character as it definitely required forethought and planning ahead for the provision of an alibi during the time of the killing. Another failure in this book was the sporadic insertion of expletives and obscenities throughout the book for no apparent reason other than a lack of the english language to be able to adequately express herself. It seemed as if not one character in her book was able to speak without using an obscenity or two. This is not so in actual life.
This is one book that, even though I bought it at a greatly reduced price, I rue having purchased it at all. About the only thing that this book is fit for is to be shredded and used as mulch in my flower garden; but I am not even certain it will be any good for that. If I may suggest, if you have money to spend on a book, make another choice other than this book or just save your money and your time.
Extremely disappointing.......2003-06-20
My first Martha Grimes mystery, and I expected much more from what others told me about this author. The plot was confusing, there were too many people with names like Bubba drinking too many Buds. Unless this is very different from her usual style, I wouldn't read her again.
A pleasant non-masterpiece.......2001-07-28
This is a standard mystery/suspense novel with one or two diverting ideas. Maude, the heroine, has some quirky thoughts which she tries to share with sheriff Sam. But Sam is a standard linear-thinking male who finds Maude's ideas perplexing. Their conversations toward the begininning of the book were for me the most interesting part of the novel. Unfortunately, once the action starts, Grimes pretty much drops the conversational sparring between Maude and Sam. This is just one example if the disjointedness mentioned by a previous reviewer. Many pages of the novel seem mostly unrelated to the mystery itself. So it is not a well-constructed mystery, but it is pleasant enough, with no obvious giveaway of the ultimate solution. It ends with one of those annoying long speeches by the guilty party, explaining to the intended final victim just how all the previous murders had been committed, and speaking just long enough for the cavalry to arrive. But this one has a slightly different twist to it. If you're a Grimes fan or just looking for a lazy way to pass some time, this is worth reading.
A disjointed effort.......2000-01-24
I liked the earlier Hotel Paradise, apart from the deliberately obscure ending. This novel, featuring the same locale and at least one character, was disappointing in a different way. It reads like a first draft, and although the ending is understandable, there are a lot of unanswered questions left pending, particularly about the motivations of the various characters.

Book Description
The British Victory in Egypt, 1801 recounts and analyzes the story of the British expeditionary force which ejected Napoleon's crack troops from Egypt. Piers Mackesy demonstrates how critically the future of the British Empire depended on the dislodging of the Napoleonic force in the Middle East.
The author's military background allows him to illustrate insightful perspectives into different styles of leadership, the nature of discipline and combat training. Mackesy reveals the high risks involved in the English assault, weighted against the masterful planning and discipline which brought the English victory against the odds. He also highlights the role of Sir Ralph Abercromby, an elderly Scot and leader of the army, and his vitality to the final success of the venture.
The British Victory in Egypt charts a critical episode in European and military history. It also provides a fascinating portrayal of the training, tactics, and strategy of a unique campaign and its executors.

Understanding these phases, knowing what to expect, and learning what they can do to help themselves give parents greater assurance and comfort.
In
How to Survive the Loss of a Child, Dr. Sanders, a bereaved parent herself, offers grieving parents practical help and emotional support. This book also helps family members, friends, and caregivers relate to grieving parents and aids them, too, in understanding the process of healing through grief.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-07-18
I lost my 19 year old son in a motorcycle accident eight months ago. Since then I have read many books on bereavement and this book continues to be one of my favorites. Catherine M. Sanders is a psychologist specializing in bereavement. She has also lost a son of her own. This book is very well written, easy to understand. It not only addresses the phases of grief, it talks about emotions such as guilt and anger and how to deal with and understand it. it also discusses many other aspects of grief such as how families grieve, the affect on marriage, different child losses and how it affects grief. Towards the end she introduces tips on beginning to live once more, and makes many references to a Higher Power and spirituality. I read the first part of this book soon after losing my son, then waited and read the last few chapters recently. I wasn't ready to read about living again right away, and the ending will probably help me more later on. I will read the entire book again and again, it has been very helpful. It's positive and very compassionate. And to repeat what another reader accurately wrote: An excellent source for giving hope that you can rebuild your life. Highly recommended.
Excellent Book.......2004-08-04
I lost my 20 year old son my only child in June 2004. This book has been very helpful to me in starting this journey that no parent should have to make. The book has helped to calm me and comfort me. This book has helped me to feel I am not alone at this tragic time.
Way Too Strident Book Provides No Help At All.......2001-08-27
This book was most unhelpful in dealing with my grief over the loss of my precious four-year-old daughter--my only child. The author states repeatedly that the only way to heal is to let go of your child completely, as well as all the dreams, hopes and anything else connected to your child. Wrong! This is just plain wrong. What a terrible thing to say to a bereaved parent. Our children's spirits live on and there is no reason to discard everything about them. Also, the book spends way too much time discussing the phases of grief. Why? So we can all be cookie-cuttered into nice little niches? And it spends way too much time telling us of all the things we gain when our child dies, things such as more compassion, greater flexibility and a better appreciation of life. This section of the book is just plain insulting to parents who have just lost the best thing in their lives. A bereaved parent gains NOTHING with the death of their child. I do not recommend this book to anyone.
Bailey.......2001-08-23
Six weeks ago My three year old daughter died unexpectedly.I am having feelings I've never experienced before. This book helped me see that I am not alone in what I am going through. The real life stories of average people who shared their loses to make this book helped me to see that I am one of a group of many who share this common bond. We know a heartache what we would hope no-one else ever as to endure. We know what it is like to have our dreams wiped out in a single moment. This book is helping me to determine what to do next.
How to Survive the Loss of a Child.......2001-01-15
In June of 2000, I received the news that my mother and oldest son had been killed in an automobile accident. I could not imagine how my life could continue. I went to grief counseling all that summer. My counselor recommended that I begin reading books written by parents who had also lost a child. This book was one of many that I purchased. It is an excellent source for giving hope that you can rebuild your life. I recommend it highly.
