Book Description

A rich man attempts a noble experiment with human nature. The result is an etched-in-acid portrayal of universal greed, hypocrisy, and follies of the flesh.

5 out of 5 stars A misunderstood messiah.......2007-08-29

In one of his last books, Vonnegut imagines a meeting with Eugence Debs, American socialist.

"As long as there is a lower class, I am it it," Debs once said, "As long as there is a criminal element, I am of it. As long as there is a soul in prison, I am not free."

Vonnegut had to report to Debs that people "snicker and snort" at that quote today. But they reacted the same way, Vonnegut implied to Debs, to the Sermon on the Mount.

And so, Mr. Rosewater, leading messiah of "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," was snickered and snorted at. Of course, Vonnegut made this snickering and snorting funny. He also made it touching.

Read "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" to see Christ's message clarified by Vonnegut; to see him sadly observe how this message in received in today's America--land of the ridiculous and home of the insincere.

5 out of 5 stars Class.......2007-08-16

With "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", Vonnegut takes on the sordid issue of class. The main character, Eliot Rosewater, has inherited vast wealth, but feels lost and adrift until he moves to a small town and spends all his time giving "uncritical love" and money to the depressed, disenfranchised locals. His behavior completely mortifies his elitist Senator Father and psychologically troubled princess wife. It also allows a greedy young lawyer ammunition to have him declared insane; the only way possible to get his hands on part of his fortune.

If recent studies have shown that rich people are no more intelligent (at least in terms of IQ) than poor people, this is something that Vonnegut clearly knew decades ago. It's clear from this novel that he believed that the "haves" and "have-nots" were usually separated by little more than luck; usually involving being born into the right circumstances. Eliot's father subscribes to the conventional American wisdom that hard work is all it takes to succeed. Eliot's idol, Science Fiction writer Kilgore Trout, has a more ambivalent point of view. The reader is left to make their own conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars You've Got to Be Kind.......2007-08-07

I'd say that God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is essentially a satirical attack on class systems and capitalism, a warning that unchecked greed can lead to a sense of meaninglessness for rich and poor alike. The overarching theme: If nothing else, you've got to be kind, because every human being on earth deserves to be loved, no matter how rich or poor or brilliant or useless they happen to be. As is typical with Vonnegut, the story is both funny and depressing at the same time. Ultimately I thought this one was a middle of the pack book for Vonnegut, which means it's really pretty good. Probably a must read for Vonnegut fans and a decent introduction for the unconverted, especially for those who like to save the best for last.

5 out of 5 stars Vonnegut is a genius.......2007-07-09

This is perhaps the most underrated piece of American fiction in the last 50 years. Much more complex than a traditional anti-affluence screed too often attributed to this work, it's drives right at the heart of what women and men are good for, whether we, all of us, are productive, are lovable. Also entertaining but read it for what it has to say about what to do with the 90% of us who are generally unproductive (both rich and poor!).

5 out of 5 stars This Bird Has Flown........2007-04-13

Sere seer, Vonnegut foresaw our collective futures and sought to jibe us into healthy, redemptive action with wit, wisdom, and Weltschmerz.

"We do,doodley do, doodley do, doodley do,
What we must, muddily must, muddily must, muddily must;
Muddily do, muddily do, muddily do, muddily do,
Until we bust, bodily bust, bodily bust, bodily bust."
--Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Sonnet for Vonnegut
He told the truth, but most ignored his words.
He wrote a string of tragicomic books,
Reiterating wisdoms never blurred.
They laughed, they praised; but home they went. The brooks
Still babbled, and the birds still nested. He,
Who smoked beneath a curly head of hair,
Would speak on campuses. He knew that we,
A species crawling from its ancient lair
To dominate the seas, the lands, the skies,
Would soon eviscerate the world for all
Except a few strong sets of weedy flies,
Some rodents, and some ants. The human flaw
Was that we failed to listen to our sages,
Who taught, appalled. Too cheap, we wrecked the Ages.

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is not unlike other satirical pieces by Vonnegut in its wit and flow and style. The piece does, however, win my hands down approval as my personal favorite by him. It is a very fun read on many levels, humorous and ironically frightening. A must have for any literature aficionado.

                Book Description

The "master of white-knuckled suspense" (Harlan Coben) is back...and so is Texas judge Whit Mosely-in an all-new, all-exciting tale of a legendary treasure, modern-day piracy, and a life-or-death game that turns Whit's friend, Port Leo police detective Claudia Salazar, into a high-seas hostage.

3 out of 5 stars Bit Unrealistic, Good Enough to Borrow from Your Library but to Purchase, No Buy One of His Other Books Instead!.......2007-08-29

This is a pretty unrealistic book with borrows the bad plot points from B grade movies such as talking too much to the victims of a crime you are committing about your life and the very crime you are committing. Although the kidnapee female police detective Claudia Salazar was a well developed character the same effort wasn't put into the other characters whose actions most of the time was pretty predictable. The pace of the pages with Whit Mosley and the police investigation dragged in comparison to kidnapped action.

Black Jack Point is the tale of criminals all after the treasure of a pirate, who cheat each other, kidnap their rival family members and really have not thought through their plans enough before acting. Meanwhile Texas Judge Whit Mosley from previous novels is investigating the murders of his friend and friend's lover whose bodies are found on top of relics and bones adding to the mystery.

I recently read Abbott's novel Panic which was although also unrealistic a lot faster paced, more enjoyable and more entertaining read. If you are going to buy an Abbott book I'd recommend getting that one instead.

                1 out of 5 stars Total Misfire.......2006-10-09

Plowing through this book and hoping, (against hope as it turned out), that at some point it would gain traction and my interest, I reached the ending and realized I'd simply wasted most of an afternoon ..... even if it was a rainy one. A multitude of haphazardly developed characters centered around a double murder, a kidnapping and a treasure hunt can't disguise the lack of a coherent or entertaining plot in this book. The "bad" guys are straight from the comics and the "good" guys are even tough to take. Edgar nominee aside, I missed the magic in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to the Port Leo series...........2006-06-07

a great Texas author, Abbott writes about fictional Port Leo like it's a town we all know and love. This is a very good story, about modern day pirates and treasure hunters, featuring Abbott's recurring main character, JP Whit Moseley, an irreverent judge/coroner for fictional Encinas County. Whit's partner and friend, Gooch, part mercenary part softie, also makes an appearance late in the book. An elderly couple is found murdered on their beach front property, which is what starts the story off, but soon their murder is only one piece in a very convoluted puzzle that includes buried treasure by the legendary pirate Jean Lafitte, various thugs/treasure hunters that stop at nothing to find a rare emerald, and the kidnapping of a police detective on the high seas. What I really liked about this book is a) the strong character development and b) the true surprise ending. This is a nicely-paced mystery and a book I'd recommend.

                1 out of 5 stars horrible!.......2005-11-09

bad dialogue, bad scenario, unrealistic plot and absolutely impossible crimes, funny characters, comic judge and police force, bad writing, bad almost everything. can't imagine this is a popular writer who has won some awards. simply trerrible. have read thrillers and mysteries for over 30 years, this is one of the worst. how could it be with such high praises is beyond me. enjoy if you could but spare me with mercy.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic Enough To Scare Me.......2004-04-14

I got this book when Jeff Abbott came to Rockport, TX and did a book signing. So, my book is a signed edition. This book takes place in a fictional town between Rockport and Aransas Pass, TX called Port Leo. Living in this area, myself, made the book come to life in way that was beyond other books. I stayed up late finishing this book and actually thought that someone was tailing me when I drove somewhere the next morning. The book was so real that it was as though I was part of the action. Once I got over my paranoia, I decided that I wanted to read more about Whit Mosely in Port Leo and hope that Jeff Abbott keeps writing these books. It's so neat that the characters go to places that I visit and even read our crappy newspaper, the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging page turner! Not a cookie-cutter fantasy novel.......2005-01-12

I'm not a big fan of the fantasy genre and I actually purchased this book to give to someone who's running a Warhammer game -- I've enjoyed everything else I've read by the author. Out of curiosity I started reading Honour of the Grave and I had trouble putting it down. It's one of the most engaging novels I've read in quite some time.

It's not a cookie cutter fantasy novel -- the "heroes" are a corpse robber and a deserter who largely live by the corpse robber's wits-- and it focuses on well-drawn characters. It also isn't overrun with elements of the fantastic, although it does contain them, but it isn't -about- them. It's all about the characters.

I've ordered the other Warhammer book the author has written and I'm looking forward to it enthusiastically!

2 out of 5 stars Could have been proffread (sarcasm).......2003-11-25

Since I own most of the Black Library's pubs, I can say that most are fun, light reads. They aren't Shakespeare, but who would call that fun and light? This was not an easy read, and would have benefitted from someone giving it a quick once over. I am worried that the Black Library is going through the same editorial funk that TSR did, which brought us some truly bad AD&D books in the 90s.
The basic premise of the book is good, and I could find nothing wrong with a battlefield looting heroine. But there are parts where the heroine does something exceptionally unexpected, rather unreasonable, and sometimes impossible. Explanations for these acts are not often given, making for a difficult read. For instance, when a muscle-bound halfling attacks her with an axe, swinging it down from over his head, she leapfrogs over him as a dodge. Que?
On another occasion, she, and her bodyguard flee a group they are helping. Several pages later, the reader, somewhat confused, learns that the heroine decided that she would profit from them more if she worked alone. By this time, the reader has written her off as mentally disturbed, and doesn't care for her excuse. A little internal monologue would go a long way.
Other times, a long paragraph is used to describe the clothes of a particularly dashing character, leading to the character's intrinsic lack of dash.
All in all, the book did help me go to sleep a few times. Also, the view of battles as something other than gallant pursuits is refreshing to a game based story of battles of careless attrition. Battlefields are ruthlessly described, and commoners and peasants displaced by seige are more than just a backdrop. This could have been a better story, but for lack of an editor, it wasn't. It is however, a great book if you want to describe battlefield carnage in a roleplaying game. Try Konrad, Gotrek and Felix (anything with Slayer in the book's title), or Genevieve for a real taste of the Warhammer World.

                                            Book Description

Designed to involve every member of the family, the yoga program in this book focuses on those children who are ready for a challenging and fun group of movements that involve both mind and body. Children are guided, using pictures and words, into poses with siblings or friends, with parents, grandparents, or caring adults. Children are first encouraged to do a series of stretching postures that escalate into vigorous warm-ups to energize the body, focus the mind, and strengthen the spirit. Other exercises are designed to give children an experience of inner strength, allowing them to develop concentration and stimulate the creative abilities innate in every child. Parents are encouraged to play with their children rather than watch them play.

Teressa Ascencia's book "Playful Family Yoga" is a fresh guide to yoga that can bring you deep into the poses using the path of childlike simplicity.

Just open this book and you will feel yourself being drawn in by the inviting poses and the darling captions that speak to the child in us all. I found myself aching to try the 'starship', the double stretch opening my shoulders and the 'feeling of expanding into the universe' (and to have Scotty beam me up, as says the cute caption.) And then the 'table pose' and the yearning to 'feel my body as still as a mountain and my breath flowing like a river'. Then there's the 'olive press' and the 'flying angel' just to name a few. As my teen-age daughter and I were practicing "Playful Family Yoga" we found ourselves inventing new poses, which I'm sure will always spontaneously happen since inventiveness is a natural progression of playfulness.

Each pose is presented in a playful manner using enticing photos of two family members, imaginative titles and quotes, and a sidebar of the amazing benefits for the inquisitive mind. There are simple instructions that not only guide the physical movements but also engage the breath, the mind and the imagination in an almost seemingly effortless way. For this reason the book is a gem. I remember doing yoga poses as a child and the poses were as easy as standing. Only when the mind and breath are introduced are you doing yoga.

This book is not only for the young family but also for friends of all ages who like to play and stay young at heart.

Playful Family Yoga: For Kids, Parents and Grandparents
by Teressa Asencia is a remarkable book that is as inspirational as it is engaging.

I am a professional yoga teacher and have yet to see a more accessible book appropriate for all levels and all ages. The text is clear and the pictures are helpful. The book reads smoothly as a cohesive unit or you can have fun reading various chapters depending upon your interest or mood. The author is clearly an expert in her field which is crucial especially in a field where so much is published without experience and expertise to back it.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the practice of yoga no matter what age or level of expertise. It reinspired my practice of over 23 years and yet would make a great gift for someone who has never come into contact with yoga before either.
