Had to put it down!.......2007-10-02
I know i'm kinda late on this one, but if you haven't read this book yet, don't bother!.
If you are over the age of 17 you won't be interested and if you are under the age of 17, you SHOULDN'T be interested.
Only gave it 1 star because I had to rate it otherwise It would not have even warranted it.
Didn't finish it.
True Life.......2007-07-29
Having recently survived teenage years as a black female, this book was awesome! It is so real. In fact, it may have been censored when compared to the lives of some teens. To those who think this book is not intellectually stimulating, it does not have to be. All media is not for edification. Some is simply to entertain. This book is one I would recommend to anyone and all. (That is as long as you are not a Tracy in the making.)
Don't read this piece of trash.......2007-07-08
I can honestly say that this is one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. Not only was it poorly written but it was deeply offensive. How this man was able to build a career by continuing to spit out garbage like this is beyond me.
I really wish Mr. Tyree would start reading in addition to writing. Maybe then his writing will improve.
DO NOT buy this as a first book for your daughter or for a reluctant reader. .......2007-06-09
Why do other reviewers insist that this is a book that every young girl should read?
As a teacher, I'm doing some summer reading in order to prepare next year's curriculum for my high school urban literature and hip hop course. Sadly, this book will not make the cut. First, the dialogue was unbelievably simple, uninspired, and predictable. The plot was mostly an exploration into some fast girl's "kiddy porn" fantasy with Tracy having no "real" consequences for her random and uninhibited sexual endeavors (i.e. disease, pregnancy, jail time). I don't find that the book has any teachable themes to use for an intellectual discussion with my students. The entire course of the novel is repetitive, with page after page following Tracy as she attempts to seduce and mount the next attractive older boy in her neighborhood for money and gifts. Overall, the text will not keep the average intelligent mind satiated, and thus this is not a novel that I would recommend for any age level of reasonable maturity.
Even the turnaround that Tracy makes at the end isn't enough to redeem her character and unsuitable actions that permeated the first 400 pages. Only in the last 50 -75 pages does she learn a lesson on self-worth and begin to discover herself, and is it for this reason that we should send all of our daughters to the bookstore with cash in hand? Are we supposed to be moved by her sudden realization that she loved Victor, the drug dealer all along, and is willing to wait for his prison release so that they can get married? We can surely do better as teachers and parents then to encourage our little girls to "relate" to this coming of age tragedy where the main character still can't cut her ties with the poor influences in her life.
Finally, I was incredibly put off by the constant describing of individuals by their hair textures, eye colors, and skin pigmentation. So let me understand this correctly, Tracy's ordinary "hazel" eyes were somehow magically endowed, so that she could lead any man to do her bidding or force them to turn away for fear of being entrenched by her stare? Give me a break. This is actually why so many of our young sisters grow up and put weaves and fake contacts on to make themselves appear more attractive. Apparently, it worked for Tracy and other characters in the novel that had "pretty eyes," "long hair," and "good skin."
As an urban lit and hip hop teacher, I know that I'm far from uptight and my senses are rarely offended by grimy and gritty tales of the hood. However, to call this narrative a classic is to insult other black authors, who have done a much better job of sharing relatable stories of far more redeeming characters that can get even the most reluctant readers excited. I'm sorry for the individuals for whom this was their first novel; as I hope that they have since moved on to discover more engaging and sophisticated pieces of black fiction.
Unfortunately, this is the second book of Omar Tyree's that I've read--Just Say No being the first, which was also severely disappointing. I doubt I will ever pick up his work again, which is a shame because I want to support all black authors in the struggle.

My mother bought me this book when I was in high school, and I didnt get past page 20....tried to read it again(5 years later) and realized, this book is plain terrible!!! Please do not waste your money. I wouldn't be able to finish this book if somebody paid me...(I'm soo serious)
For the love of a good book!!!!!.......2007-07-19
This was THE worst book I have ever read! I was so disgusted that I actually paid the full price for this mess. What is this book about? When he changed the character's name he should have changed the story along with it.
I won't be buying any more of his books for a minute!!!
All I Could Say is...HORRIBLE!!!.......2007-04-04
After reading Flyy Girl which was an excellant book i would think this would be a great continuation....WRONG!! This book was so horrible and bland that i stopped reading dead in the middle of the book. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone and Omar Tyree had the nerve to add a third book, Boss Lady. I'm not either gonna bother and neither should anyone else who doesn't want to waste their money.
No Way!!!.......2007-03-26
By no means would I had purchased this book after reading the reviews. I was so disappointed because Flyy Girl was an awesome read. Please don't waste your time nor your money.
I could not believe it.......2007-02-05
I must say that I am overjoyed that I did not buy this book! To this very day I have not finished it and I started it 6 years ago! I do not like to be cruel or insensitive because I would not want anyone to harshly criticize my work but the book was beyond boring! I made it through half the novel before I decided that I could not continue to torture myself.
The content was bland. As I perused the novel I began to feel like Omar Tyree could care less about his readers. I mean FLyy Girl was magnificent! I recommended it to numerous people and I was all too excited to see there was a sequel. I was horrified when I opened the cover to review a content so emotionless that the pages may as well have been blank! I would not recommend For the Love of Money to a trash can let alone people.

Flyy Girls #1 Fan................2005-05-31
oMg .....wHere Do i sTarT? Flyy girl is one of the greatest books written for teens if not the greatest.I first read the book in the 7th grade and im still taking about it and now im in high school! This girl Tracy has it going on. ....She dont pLaY! I fell in love w/ her character when i read the first page. This book should be required reading for every teenager in the world. Reading Tracy's story is like looking into a life style that you would die for.Omar Tyree did it up so big with this book. They should make it into a movie. And if they did i would have to be the person to play Tracy. There is so much i could say about this book but i dont think there are words invented to express how good this book is. SO im gonna leave it up to you to read it and you can find the right words.
Flyy Girl.......2004-05-04
Flyy Girl was off the chain.. I've lived that lifestyle and I enjoy it.. The money, the clothes, the cars (no drugs f0r me) and most incrediblely......the constant (safe) Sex...NEver Sold my Body never cheated on my boy friends, it is just amazing...and to see my life be written in a story (except for the odd reform part) it was incredible.. i love Omar Tyree. He put so many of our lives in printbut the best part of it all had to have been the deja vu sex scenes...but the rest was good too.
Still excellent.......2004-02-11
I read this book when i was in the 6th grade and i fell in love with itI am now in college and my opinion hasent changed. This is a great book for any collector!!! GirlS its a MUST have The SEX and the violence. the book is incredible!

what can i say, i started this book and thought it would be boring. But then i kept on reading and reading and reading, finally i was stuck in the book. Mercedes reminds me of myself now at the age of 16. Tracy is me when i was yournger the same things she did what she was younger i did too!!! I am the type of peson that dosn't like to read books, but when i read this i wanted more. Now that i have read 2 of Omar Tyree's books, i know i am going to keep on reading. I know when i have children one day i am going to get them all his books so they can read them. This books teaches you lessons not to be dumb and try to grow up to fast. I am only 16 but i feel that this book taught me alot. i think this book should be on every teen girls bookshelf. I know it's on mine :-)

Book Description
Eccentric, coldly rational, brilliant, doughty, exacting, lazy—in full bohemian color the world’s most famous literary detective and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson investigate a series of previously unrecorded cases in this new collection of original tales. In the Scottish Highlands and Afghanistan, in the cases of a dying doctor and a mooning sentry, of a black basalt bird and white chalk horse, popular contemporary mystery writers—among them Sharyn McCrumb, Carolyn Wheat, Anne Perry and Malachi Saxon, Jon L. Breen, Bill Crider, Colin Bruce—craftily celebrate the mind, methods, and manners of the peerless Sherlock Holmes. In addition, with one foot in the Victorian age and the other in the computer age, Christopher Redmond illuminates the vast possibilities that new technology offers Sherlockians in “Sherlock Holmes on the Internet,” while in “A Sherlockian Library” editors Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower provide a new list of fifty essential titles on Arthur Conan Doyle and the Holmes canon. Finally, an essay by mystery novelist Philip A. Shreffler explores one of English literature’s most famous friendships in “Holmes and Watson, the Head and the Heart.”

Engrossing tales.......2007-03-24
"Murder, My Dear Watson" is one of the annual anthologies published by Carrol & Graf in their `New Tales of Sherlock Holmes' series. Most of these anthologies contain a few attractive stories with mediocre to bad stuff being presented generously. Fortunately, this particular collection scores significant points in terms of stories that involve Holmes' (albeit apocryphal) singular tales with certain `matters of interest'. Now for a very brief description of these tales:
1. "The Adventure of the Dying Doctor" by Colin Bruce is a very humane story where Watson (surprise!) is the main character, with a cameo by James Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes.
2. "The Adventure of the Young British Soldier" by Bill Crider is another story where Watson and his erstwhile orderly Murray take centre-stage. Of course Holmes is there, sharp as ever, poetic as well.
3. "The Vale of the White Horse" by Sharyn McCrumb is a complex tale with hints of bizarre hereditary traits and the consequences. It was a brilliant story with depths that are rarely aimed at.
4. "The Adventure of the Mooning Sentry" by Jon L. Breen is a mediocre story about one of Holmes' post-retirement `missions'.
5. "The Adventure of the Rara Avis" by Carolyn Wheat is a rather sensationalistic attempt to develop the tantalizing hints left by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle regarding the affair of the Addleton-Barrow' into a story about the Maltese Falcon.
6. "The Adventure of the Agitated Actress" by Daniel Stashower is a brilliant story about white might have happened on the stage before William Gillette's play "Sherlock Holmes" opened in London.
7. "The Case of the Highland Hoax" by Anne Perry and Malachi Saxon is an improbable, wild and poor story set in the Scottish Highlands.
8. ""The Case of the Golden Monkeys" by Loren D. Estleman is an almost Wold-Newton story involving Sax Rohmer and his Fu-Manchu model.
9. "The Adventure of the Curious Canary" by Barry Day is a good retelling of "The Speckled Band".
10. "Before the Adventures" by Lenore Carroll is a brilliant story about what could have happened to Watson before the entry of Holmes in his life.
The non-fiction writings included in this book contain a plethora of information about the world of Sherlock Holmes and how a Sherlockian may enrich his knowledge in these matters. Overall, highly recommended.
Lots of Plums.......2004-11-24
Within the past three months I've read a dozen collections of Holmes pastiches, and found this to be the best. It includes several quotable "plums." Such plums were one of the key features of the original Holmes stories; they'd be a raisinless rice pudding without them. Here are a few:
P. 13: The best way to tell a lie effectively is to tell the truth badly.
P. 18: The moral, Watson, is that while life contains its hazards, it is the man who does not know how to calculate the risks who is in real danger.
P. 67: An amateur. Which means he is either a genius or a dilettante. There is no in-between in such cases.
P. 69: Swamp gas can only explain so much, sir, so much and no more.
P. 154-55: I saw the small twitch of irony catch the corner of his mouth. The next moment the face had regained its classically sculpted lines, something poised between Roman senator and an American Indian.
P. 161: He acted as though he expected to have the fatted calf killed daily on his behalf.
Slim pickings again.......2002-11-25
I went ahead and invested in this follow-up to last year's "Murder in Baker Street", hoping that the stories would be better. Well, they weren't. The tales are just flat and unexciting. What happened to the good stories some of these authors used to contribute to previous anthologies? Out of this batch, maybe two are worth reading. Other than that, I would recommend saving $$ and renting it from the library.

Action Packed Fantasy.......2006-05-08
There are fantasy books with mystical critters, magic, and kingdoms in conflict. There are military fiction books with plenty of heart-pounding action sequences. And there are romances with arranged marriages that just happen to connect true loves. Here, John Helfers gives you all three, with his own fantasy realm and interesting human and humanoid inhabitants, swashbuckling swordplay and siege engines, and two independent spirits that find love in each others arms. Don't let the first two chapters fool you into thinking this is just another leisurely fantasy tale full of politics and posturing. Once chapter three begins, the action is non-stop and the intrigue and passion keep up with the page turning pace. Donald J. Bingle, Author of Forced Conversion.
Gritty and classic fantasy done right.......2005-11-28
Whether you believe that fantasy is making a huge comeback, led by the recent success of both the Harry Potter series and the recent Lord of the Rings films (as the optimists among us are inclined to do) or that these are mere blips on an otherwise barren landscape of same elf, different day (as the more cynical of us claim), there can be no doubt that a great deal of fantasy has for some time followed the same predictable recipe: take one young person of little reputation and less self-confidence (though with enormous potential below the surface), place him/her in impossible circumstances under which all (including him/herself) expect him/her to fail, add an appropriately evil character against which he/she will be tested, throw in a dash of magic and at least a hint of romance, and mix well. Bake, rinse, and repeat. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, works which clearly break away from the norm, but these are few and far between--and even more troubling, there are even fewer works which handle the existing formula well, in an interesting, intelligently written, and engaging way. If you're not going to reinvent the wheel every time you write a work of fantasy (and why should you have to?), at least it would be nice if the hubcaps shine on the works you do produce!
It's good to know, then, that at least some writers are now demonstrating their ability to write in this latter category. J. Gregory Keyes's new series THE KINGDOMS OF THORN AND BONE is a wonderful example of this work, and it's great to see that John Helfers is another writer who understands what works and, even better, how to deliver what works to his readers. Not that Helfers is a newcomer to the field--he has both edited and written a host of books and short story collections in both science fiction and fantasy over the past decade, and his reputation as a solid and competent writer is already well-established. But with THE SIEGE OF NIGHT AND FIRE, the first book in the world of the Eightfold Kingdoms, Helfers enters the fantasy novel market with a flourish. As the summary at Amazon and elsewhere will tell you, the book follows the adventures of Teris Rathden, youngest brother of the Rathden family (here's the young person of little reputation and less self-confidence) and Syrena Marsena, daughter of the rival Marsena clan (the necessary love interest), brought together for a political marriage which is immediately disrupted by an all out attack by the enemies of all the Eightfold Kingdoms, the Vaarbolg. Forced by circumstances beyond his control to lead the defense of his keep against the enemies' siege, Teris learns quickly the dangers and, perhaps, the joys of leadership, quickly growing from a mischievous ne'er do well to a confident man in full charge of his faculties at the end of the tale, which moves quickly and expertly between large scale combat to surprisingly poignant moments of intimacy between Teris and Syrena (who, as it turns out, is much more than just a pretty face). Through it all Helfers demonstrates facility and skill in moving and manipulating his readers, and through love and loss we come to genuinely care about his characters--no small feat for what is essentially a book of war.
As a military historian himself, Helfers knows how to write his battle scenes, and the combat never feels forced here, nor overly glamorous. Just the opposite, in fact; this is gritty fantasy too, and at times the sheer detail of the horrible deaths suffered in times of war can be a bit offputting if one isn't expecting it. Gratuitous, no; gruesome, yes, and you won't find a lot of Rivendell-esque pleasantness to lighten the grim military mood. And especially towards the end of the book, the narrative leaps so quickly from scene to scene that you can feel a trifle discombobulated--if you've ever seen these movies, imagine throwing SPEED and the fight scenes from THE BOURNE IDENTITY or BATMAN BEGINS together and you'll get the idea. But then, a siege itself might feel much like this; no time to think, no real time to plan, just observe the movements of the enemy and react accordingly. I'd trust Helfers' judgement on this, in any case; he establishes enough credibility in the book's beginning that one is willing to follow him through to its conclusion, and the payoff is well worth the journey. In the meantime, it's one hell of a ride.
This is not blazingly new work, but it is something arguably much more important--well-written and intelligent fantasy, carefully crafted by someone who clearly knows his field and how to move comfortably within it. The ending leaves a lot of open ground to cover in future books, and I for one am glad of it; it's about time we saw classic themes presented in ways that remind us why they became classic, and it's good to know that we can look forward to having John Helfers guide us through those themes for many books to come. This is quality work by a quality author.
Dr. Gregory A. Wilson
Love or War?.......2005-11-28
I truly enjoyed John Helfers' novel, Siege of Night and Fire. I thought at first I was in store for a book purely about a siege, how the characters ended up in such a situation and what they did to resolve it, etc.
But there's so much more here. The main characters, Teris and Syrena, are newlyweds thrown into the proverbial fire when the evil vaarlborg trap them within Wyrling Keep. The men, women and children trapped within represent stakes enough, but it would be disastrous for each of the Eightfold Kingdoms should the vaarlborg gain control of Wyrling.
Its intriguing to see how the ongoing conflict affects Teris and Syrena's budding relationship, and vice versa! My favorite kind of story are those that show how personal interactions play against the backdrop of the larger story. I would recommend Siege to anyone with similar tastes.
Well done, Mr. Helfers!
All's fair in love and war.......2005-11-13
John Helfers's "A Siege of Night and Fire" is at once a story about a marriage and a battle. Marriage is hard, no doubt about it, though most married couples can go on a honeymoon, settle into their new lives, and adjust bit by bit.
Teris Rathden and Syrena Marsena aren't nearly so lucky. Teris, youngest son of the King of Rathden, and Syrena, the daughter of the King of Marsena, have never met, and were betrothed to settle the feud between their two kingdoms, and usher in a new era of amity between the two nations. As anyone who's ever been on a blind date can tell you, this approach to diplomacy is fraught with potential peril. For that matter Teris, something of a wastrel, isn't keen on the idea of marriage at all.
And the Vaarbolg, a race of inhuman marauders from the deep forests, have different ideas as well. A half-mad war shaman named Klarshk leads the Vaarbolg. Klarshk has studied the human arts of war, including the making of siege engines, and with the aid of magic provided by the "Night Walker", the Vaarbolg god, Klarshk plans to destroy the human kingdoms once and for all, starting with the castle hosting Teris's and Syrena's wedding.
"Siege" is a good read, with lots of action, plenty of intrigue, and a bit of romance.
Action packed novel.......2005-10-27
Siege of Night and Fire is a really action packed novel, very exciting from cover to cover. Readers will enjoy the fast pace and high drama. Syrena and Teris are great characters and the supporting cast, mainly Kyre, add a lot to the book. The heart of the novel is the siege of Wyrling Keep, by the devious vaarbolg, who are led by their shaman, a fascinating character. The chapters from his point of view are excellent. But it is the interactions of Syrena and Teris that really stand out. Their story is the central aspect of Siege and the survival or destruction of Wyrling Keep will depend on them. I loved the book and plan on reading it again, as well as any other books set in the Eightfold Kingdoms.

Book Description
Dr. Loren Fishman, a distinguished clinician and a trailblazer in the treatment of sciatica, believes there's only one road to relief: patients must become partners with their doctors in naming the cause of their pain and in making treatment decisions.
Based on the latest research and on Dr. Fishman's fifteen years of experience in treating patients successfully, Back Pain is filled with pain-saving advice and instructional facts: so many adults suffer bouts of back pain that many doctors consider them normal occurrences, like a cold or flu; more than four days of bed rest can make a back ache worse; patients who choose chiropractors visit them twice as often as those who choose medical doctors; more than 25 percent of people who go to orthopedic surgeons have referred themselves; the initial treatment any doctor is likely to prescribe is aspirin; sciatica is one of the three major causes of back pain.
Customer Reviews:
Sort of helpful.......2007-05-02
I've read four books on low back pain, and this was third most helpful of the four. The three more interesting ones have their own specific slant, which may or may not be particularly helpful to any individual low back pain sufferer. For what it's worth, here are the four books, in my order of their helpfulness:
1. Treat Your Own Back, by Robin McKenzie. This mostly focuses on one exercize, the Mckenzie "press-up". A few other exercises are mentioned but mostly you hear about the press-up. However, the press-up IS the most-favored exercise by the majority of physical therapists today. The book is too simplistic, but that makes it easy to use by the amateur, which is the point!
2. Back Pain, by Loren Fishman, M.D., and Carol Ardman. This fairly readable book gives a lot of understandable information about back pain causes and symptoms. Particularly helpful to me was the section relating transferred pain symptoms of sciatica to the probable location of lumbar disk hernias. Dr. Fishman is a physiatrist and an advocate of very detailed physical examinations by physicians, but he gives you some self-examination tools as well.
3. Backache Survival, by Robert S. Ivker, D.O. This book is readable and even funny in places. However, the author gives you so many ideas, and so little specific documentation for the research leading to his conclusions, that I was pretty much overwhelmed. I did follow some of his nutritional recommendation. Ivker is a religious practitioner in favor of Tantric Yoga, therapeutic touch, and healing prayers to God. He's also in favor of practically EVERYTHING else except surgery. Ivker is the opposite extreme of simplistic McKenzie--he gives TOO MANY alternatives!
4. Understanding Low Back Pain, by Mario A Gutierrez, M.D. This book gets the booby prize for unreadability and for the complexity of its solutions, mostly surgery.
The bottom line is you're going to have a hard time curing yourself by reading books, but McKenzie comes closest.
It worked GREAT for ME!!!.......2007-03-11
Put it this way, I haven't finished the book after owning it for 3 years now, but don't feel it necessary. I bought the book because I couldn't sleep due to back pain on a vacation. I read the first few chapters, said this is me and realized how much the mind influences your bodies well being. End of story, haven't touch the book since but highly recommend it to anyone!!!
Thank you Stern for Telling us about Dr. Sarno!!!
Book not worth the money.......2003-04-14
I go in for surgery for my herniated disk in two days and nothing I read in this book informed me, encouraged me, or discouraged me from my decision. It's a very basic book if you know absolutely nothing about back pain, but as for any practical advice, there's very little. I especially looked for advice on exercises that are safe to do after surgery, but found none. What little info there is also seems very dated. I would have liked to see more than a tiny bit of info on types of surgery, etc. If the authors had spent their time on more research instead of ranting against managed health care, this might have been a decent and informative book. My advice: spend your money on another, more detailed and up-to-date book.
Great book for those in pain.......2002-08-06
If you are going to read one book about your sciatica or low back pain, this should be it. The book is very well balanced and covers a lot of ground without getting bogged down in details. It covers the medical background of back problems without becoming a medical text. There are also hints on types of treatments available and how to make rational decisions about what treatment is best for your situation. There are many, many back books out there but this is one of the best written.
One of the Best Lower Back Pain Diagnosis Tools Available.......2002-01-16
After 5 days of journaling my lower back pain signs and symptoms - I was able to use this book and diagnose my back injury as Spinal Stenosis - Due to a major disc herniated at the L4-L5 inside the vertebral canal. For me the diagnosis was not good - immediate surgery, but as I tore through this book with ease, cover to cover within a 24hr period, I can see how this book is a must buy for those who have back problems several times a year and have not diagnosed the true underlying cause of the pain.
The authors are firm believers in a Doctor/Patient team approach with the patient responsible for aiding the doctor with the proper descriptions in order to truly diagnose the underlying cause of the pain. Using a step by step approach - the author gives the reader a true down to earth understanding of how all the bones, muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, disc and connective tissue affecting the lower back work together.
They teach the real difference between symptoms and signs, there-by giving the reader an excellent understanding on how to describe and classify the feelings and pain. They also describe all MD specialist that deal with lower backs to aid you on who might be best fit to help in your diagnosis. They even wiz you by non traditional methods.
Only when you ID the true root cause of the pain - can you begin the road to recovery. With the easy to follow muscle information and nerve charts and an unbelievable amount of excellent symptoms and sign diagnosis aids, I am 100% sold on this book. I am back buying 5 copies just to give out to family and friends that I know suffer through annual rituals of severe back pain and have not had success in really understanding the root cause.
