4 out of 5 stars TINY TREASURE.......2005-10-25

These two small books are nicely illustrated. Each book contains one very short, heartwarming story. (They can be read in about ten minutes.) The stories are enjoyable and well written. It's important that the buyer realizes that they are not novels, like the rest of the Mitford series.

5 out of 5 stars OH WOW!!.......2004-08-18

We got the recipe and a wonderful book to read every Christmas to remind you what is important. Esther's Gift is very short but the perfect book to get you in the mood for Christmas. I will remember to read it every year!

5 out of 5 stars for the Baker at heart..........2004-01-11

I'm just a 32 yr.old Mom & wife, for now.,this is for the Baker at heart...
I'd heard of these books, but couldn't remember the titles , nor the author. When I finally figured out which books they were, and found the books, I orded the gift set, 'The Mitford Snowmen', and 'Esther's gift', for my self, just to 'try a few out', without buying the whole set. A friend said I'd love them, because I love to bake, and am also an avid reader. I love to try new and decadent desserts, to always top whatever my previous triumph had been. These 2 small books were a joy to read, and I am looking forward to reading all the others, as well as passing them on to other friends or family to read. Esther seems to be just like me, with all her worries, and her heart is always in the right place. I must say that I was a bit dissappointed at the short length of the books (they are only short stories), but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, as I know that they are larger books. The Marmalade cake is GLORIOUS!! Never have I had any cake so wonderful. I recommend this to any woman who enjoys good, old-fashioned home-town stories; whom love to entertain, cook, and hear stories about the kind of characters we can all relate to.

Book Description

"Rosemary, Thora, and Jane lived at the end of the lane, one was thin, one was fat, and one was very plain." This is how Ellie Haskell remembers her grandmother's three friends, known collectively as "the bridesmaids." She had once asked her mother where the nickname came from and her mother replied, "It's a long story, best forgotten." Every family has its secrets.

Now, thirty years later, a letter from the bridesmaids arrives informing Ellie that her grandmother, Sophia, wishes to make contact. This might have been heartwarming news but for one small detail: Sophia is dead. Ellie sets out to visit the bridesmaids on what becomes a life-changing journey that includes a seance, a hidden diary, and a murder that took place more than fifty years ago.

Download Description

Fans of Cannell's previous Ellie Haskell mysteries will not be disappointed with this one, which retains the author's sparkling humor and penchant for off-beat characters. Ellie, now a mother of three, sends her family off on holiday so she can finally tend to decorating their castle (the one she inherited, you recall, from her wacky Fester-ish uncle). But before she can pick up a paintbrush, she receives a letter from ""the bridesmaids,"" three ladies who had been friends of her grandmother Sophia's. They claim that Sophia has a message for Ellie--the problem being that Sophia has been dead for half a century. Ellie visits the bridesmaids, and comes to realize that one among the slightly dotty trio may turn out be a murderess. Several of the mystery's plot devices will be familiar to Cannell addicts: old family skeletons come to light, a hilarious gothic-novel-within-a-novel caricatures both ""Jane Eyre"" and ""Rebecca,"" and at least one character turns out to have a long-lost twin. But Cannell also tackles new Spiritualist ground here, undertaking themes of ghostly emanations, seances, and conjurings. (The bridesmaids feel a tad uneasy about invoking Sophia's spirit, and spend one very funny scene wondering if they should enhance their matronly attire with garlic necklaces or crucifixes.) Cannell effectively opens the door to the spirit world, and then gently closes it as the story's supernatural phenomena all turn out to have perfectly natural--albeit unlikely--explanations. She does leave the door just a tad ajar at the novel's close, acknowledging a spiritual intuition that remains unaccounted for. This mystery is rollicking good fun for a dark and stormy night.

4 out of 5 stars A FUN, FAST READ...I ENJOYED IT FOR WHAT IT IS........2007-07-13

No spoilers here! Dorothy Cannell is a good story teller and certainly has a great sense of humor. With this 11th novel in the Ellie Haskell series, both traits come shinning through. Ellis in contacted by three ladies from out of her past that state her grandmother wants to contact her. Since Ellie's grandmother is long dead, this is of course a problem. Ellie and her ever present quirky house keeper set out for a visit and of course end up in a typical Gothic Setting with three very odd ladies. I it is sort of difficult to do much plot outlinging with Ms. Cannell's books as there are plots and subplots scattered throughout the work. To talk much about one leaves openings to spoil another for the reader. I did feel that the over all plot of this work was weaker than in some of the author's other works and, as another reviewer has pointed out, the book, at times, seemed rather rushed. That is okay though. I read these books more for the humor and characters than I do the story and the author has delivered again with this one. If you are looking for a fast, one evening read, that is rather enjoyable, then this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Spooky........2007-03-20

Fun and Spooky. I love Dorothy Cannell books, because they are, well, fun and silly. And sometimes spooky. And always intelligent. Some of the best character development around (and boy, does she develop some characters!)

I hate reviews that discuss the whole plot, with inner meanings and story disclosures, so I'll just say, Buy it. Read it. Read any of the series, I can't think of a single 'best'.

Here's something - funnier than Evanovich, and a lot cleaner; still, has more realistic bedroom scenes. Funny ones.

4 out of 5 stars A tongue-in-cheek mystery having fun with gothic novels.......2004-01-10

This mystery is also a farce that pokes fun at a lot of conventional ingredients of gothic mysteries -- strange villagers, an old house straight out of Clue, missionaries in the Belgian Congo, the lifelong household servants, old trunks in attics, and surly gardeners. Cannell makes fun of all these conventions even as she uses them in her mystery -- and has her detective, Ellie Haskell, reading an old gothic novel (leatherbound, of course), that one of the other characters has given her.

THe mystery begins with a letter to Ellie from ROsemary, who was a friend of her grandmother's -- Ellie is asked to come visit because her grandmother has something to tell her -- only the grandmother died in the Congo many years ago. ROsemary is living in the Old Rectory with two other friend. These three friends had apparently been "bridesmaids" at her grandmother's wedding and that's why Ellie's deceased mother had called them the bridesmaids -- hence the book's title. Ellie hasn't seen them since childhood and decides to go see what this is about. Ellie's charwoman, Mrs. Malloy, decides to go along for the ride, but she'll be staying nearby with a childhood friend who is a cousin of a lifelong servant at the Old Rectory... you get the picture.

THere's a clue or a red herring about every paragraph, and lots of colorful characters and humor.

The pleasure of this book isn't so much in the clever plotting (which is why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5) but in the madcap humor of the book and the many colorful characters. This was my first book by Cannell but it won't be my last. This book was great fun to read.

3 out of 5 stars Willy Nilly Cozy.......2002-03-25

With the witty title, strong opening and some occasionally inspired dialogue, I really expected the best from my first chapter or two of this cozy mystery. But the tale quickly disintegrates into a soup with too many contrasting ingredients, way too much seasoning, and not enough simmering. Too many characters are introduced but never fully developed, the lovely British setting is not fully integrated, the gardens and interesting or fabulous homes are barely sketched in - but the action can only be described as willy nilly and inplausible. This would have been a lovely book for a location map, and some charming English country scenes, and a lot more characterization. I was disappointed and wondered if this book had been rushed to publication.

5 out of 5 stars Dorothy Cannell Hasn't Lost Her Touch.......2000-07-24

Although I seldom read Gothics anymore, I read my share of them when I was young. Ms. Cannell serves up the standards: deep dark family secrets (one was easy to guess, but the others took me completely by surprise), great wrongs from the past that need to be set right, people being killed because they either KNOW TOO MUCH or could unwittingly REVEAL ALL. She didn't leave out the less-than-warm welcome the villagers give the innocent heroine. There's a seance! There's a governess who wanted her master who had the invalid wife. Ellie's life is mysteriously threatened. There's even a certain architectural feature no Gothic romance should be without. Of course, Ellie isn't the usual Gothic heroine because she's a wife and mother, but our author handles this trifling problem by packing Bentley and the kiddies off to camp. Mrs. Malloy and the faithful Tobias are similarly disposed of, leaving poor Ellie on her own. To trust or not to trust? Not only is that the question, but the answer could mean life or death to Ellie. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that it's the best spoof of Gothics since Jane Austen's NORTHANGER ABBEY, but it's certainly a lot of fun. RANDOM COMMENTS: If you take 100 years as the human life span, then ages 34 through 65 are the middle, so yes, you are middle aged if you're in your forties (I will be 46 this year). Laughed at Mrs. Malloy's reaction to the reason Ellie has never spoken of her maternal grandmother. The chapter decorations are pretty. For someone who reads Gothics, Ellie took a bit long to become suspicious. I'd never heard the phrase "a friend of Dorothy" before -- what a polite way to explain. My instinctive reaction to the mentions of meat puddings and fish pie was YUCK! Then I remembered the teasing I gave a friend who refused to try chicken pot pie because "pies are dessert!" and decided to keep an open mind. With all the revelations in this book, Ellie and her kin are going to have to rethink their precise degree of relationship. I, for one, hope that Ms. Cannell doesn't fail to give us vain Vanessa's reaction in the next book. I'm sorry that Yan Nascimbene chose to give us a dustjacket illustration that's in keeping with the punny title. This book cries out for a traditional Gothic cover, preferably a nightgowned Ellie fleeing the Old Rectory in the pitch dark; with one window mysteriously lit in the forbidding house.

Eastern mysticism and martial arts meet tough guy detective yankee style. Not exactly a shocker there. The Black Blades are another scary Japanese gang, but the plot they are looking to implement is a bit more far reaching.

More of a James Bond style thing, use a supercomputer program to do a bit of world domination. That sort of thing. Luckily he has a girlfriend to help him.

Lustbader never fails to deliver taut, spine-tingling, often erotically charged action. Black Blade will trap you so don't expect to take too long to read it.

Wolf Matheson, a NYPD homicide detective investigates the murder of a billionnaire who dies in bizarre circumstances. Sooner rather than later, he is up against corrupt fellow officers and discovers that the body found is the tip of the iceberg. In Japan, the Black Blade Society, a kind of Yakuza-style organisation has the very latest in neural-net computers called The Hive planning their greatest operation yet. In Washington, a clandestine agency is conspiring to destroy Japan's abilities as an economic world power. Add these three elements together, throw in Wolf's love interest Chika, a Japanese girl who leads him to the Black Blade Society and helps him rediscover an ability he was taught by his Native American family in order to fight the bad guys. Like THE NINJA and all the other novels in that series, BLACK BLADE has all the necessary ingredients of a Lustbader classic - action, suspense, Oriental mysticism, sizzling sex scenes and martial arts combat scenes put well into print. Overall, a must purchase!

The characters are alive. The plot is complex and rich with detail. I found it to be a wonderful night time read. Eric Lustbader books get better each time you read it, you will notice details you haven't noticed before.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, at least the art is good!.......2005-02-22

I certainly don't feel that BLADE: BLACK AND WHITE is a must-have, as it costs the same as a Marvel Essential with only 1/4 of the page count. It's just a handful of random stories from throughout Blade's vampire-hunting career, unnecessarily reprinted on glossy paper. It's a nice supplement, however, for all the fans who have been going crazy over Marvel's thorough reprinting of Tomb of Dracula in the Essential format.

This book collects black and white material from VAMPIRE TALES #8-9, MARVEL PREVIEW #3 and #6, BLADE: CRESCENT CITY BLUES #1, and MARVEL SHADOWS AND LIGHT #1. For the most part, the stories are general Marvel horror fare: flimsy plots with lead characters who babble incessantly while fighting legions of the undead (and even remarking to themselves that they do it!). The Crescent City Blues story does improve on this a bit, even taking a dig at those earlier stories, but even this one runs low on steam towards the end. But still, as with any Marvel horror comic, the real star is the art, and BLADE: BLACK AND WHITE has impressive art galore: Tony deZuniga's textured fine-line, Jose Ladronn's weird Kirby/Giffen amalgam, and of course, the ultimate Dracula artist Gene Colan, who provides his always beautiful art for two stories, plus the cover. The work of Gene Colan is always worth the price of admission, but I'd say that this book is for TOD fans only.

Ideally, being healthy isn't just about being a certain weight: It's about having all the systems of your body performing at optimum levels for as long a time as possible. Mackie Shilstone, in his role as medical advisor to professional athletes, presents a complex plan in The Fat-Burning Bible that incorporates supplements, sleep and stress management alongside the standards of diet and exercise.

The first section of the book helps you establish your honest starting point--it's easy to be at an acceptable weight but have unacceptably high fat percentages, cholesterol or blood sugar. Establishing this point involves a fair amount of measuring and math, and includes checklists that will help you identity potential concerns like Syndrome X or thyroid problems.

Diet and nutrition follow; the section encompasses fairly complex suggestions on intake percentages as well as simple meal plans and recipes. Portion control figures highly--it's back to the old 'four ounces of skinless chicken breast' as a basic building block. A short section on supplements refers in a general way to recent research, but is more of an introduction than complete system. More time is devoted to the exercise program, but this could be more complex than a typical dieter feels ready for. Clear photos show off specific exercises, but they require regular trips to the gym or a set of dumbbells at home. The last section, which Shilstone suggests photocopying, is a day-to-day journal that allows you to check off goals and note areas for further work. It's a helpful tool, but also requires a fair amount of dedication.

Ultimately, this book seems designed for those who are already fairly fit, but are hoping to achieve a more ideal version of good health. It could be especially helpful for amateur athletes--if you're prepping for a marathon or other big event, this might be just the tool you need. Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Great Insight, however, do your own Research........2007-06-02

I am a licensed Chiropractor and studied Biochemistry as an undergraduate. Much of what was detailed in this book was a helpful review for me, as well as providing some new insightful information - particularly in reference to the "reverse fat pattern phenomenon" that was mentioned early on in the book. I disagree, however, with the author's recommendation of a (40% Carbohydrate + 30% Protein) diet. I would decrease the Carbohydrate % and increase the Protein %. If someone were attempting to lose weight, I would not recommend severely restricting their carbohydrate intake - as Dr. Atkins would suggest, but to restrict it to approximately 30%. This is still less than Mackie Shilstone recommends, however. I would also recommend consuming 50% of your diet as Proteins vs. only the 30% that he suggests. I believe that an individual can do so without causing their body to enter "Ketosis" and still lose weight safely at the same time. Other than that, the book is right on. There is so much conflicting information out there that it is refreshing to find a book without all the "fatty" information and just the helpful facts.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly as titled.......2006-08-08

I bought this book after seeing a few bad reviews along with all the good ones. Some critics where fair, there is a lot of things in this book that have been said before, but honestly, when was there a big revolution in getting healthy? The only new things in this category are fad diets and we all know they don't work. This book is very well written and it is not only written for the grossly overweight who have tried everything, but it is also written for people who are trying to help health issues such as high cholesterol and diabetes. Mr. Shilstone does a very good job explaining why things do and do not work rather than just saying it. All of the food recipes work well and he makes sure to make the point of not leaving large groups of foods off your diet, also everything he suggests is very satisfying food that tastes good too.

The supplements can be a bit overwhelming if you aren't used to taking lots of pills every day. As for the "9 foods that burn fat" that another reviewer pointed out don't exist, the actual title of that chapter is "foods that burn fat", the chapter number is 9, so that is just a misunderstanding. This book is more about fixing your matabolism so that you can lose fat and not lean muscle mass, if that is not your goal, or you are not willing to invest an hour a day to exercise, you will not fully benefit from this book. With that said, do not be scared by the full hour, this is not a "gym rat" type of workout, it is not designed to become a bodybuilder, it is set up to get your muscles into shape to burn excess calories.

2 out of 5 stars The Fat Burning Baloney.......2005-08-03

This book offers nothing new on the weight loss or fat burning front. Simply pages and pages of regergitating whats already "out there". The book constist of 80% therories and 20% techniques. I was particularly frustrated with the section title 9 Foods That Burn Fat. I read and reread this section and it DOES NOT list ANY foods, let alone 9. The whole chapter consist of calorie counting and "suggested meal plans", no specfics as title indicates. My whole point was to learn WHICH foods I need to make sure to incorporate into my own meal plan.

The only benefit I got from this book was the excercise plans which included great photos/instructions. Buying an excercise video would be more beneficial. Overall if you are a health novice and have no idea that body fat is bad, starving your self doesnt work, etc. then this is a good buy.

                      5 out of 5 stars Amazing -- And I've Only Just Begun.......2005-05-07

I'm not sure why Susan Hogloch would write in the review included in the book description that this approach would appeal mostly to men. I urge you other women reading this out there to disregard that comment. The chapter on supplements which boost metabolism alone is worth the price of this book. I can say that because, to date, that's the only part of the book I've had time to put into practice. Just with the addition of the supplements over the span of about 2 months, I lost 14 pounds. That weight came off in exactly the places he writes about (reverse fat gain syndrome) that often indicates a messed-up metabolism. I can only imagine what will happen once I adjust my exercise regime to his plan and start following the nutritional guidelines. I'm a believer and have been recommending the book to my friends.

4 out of 5 stars The whole package.......2005-03-26

While Lose Your Love Handles, one of Shilstone's previous efforts, was a solid work, I wanted to see more specific guidance on how to work the rest of the body and incorporate his core training into a complete program.
A few years later, Shilstone delivers.
The program is extremely well-rounded, with a mix of cardio, weights, core training and intervals, plus balanced meal plans. If you're loooking for 5-minute workouts, forget it. You won't have to live in the gym (he also has a home strength training workout you can use), but you will have to invest about an hour a day, six days a week to exercise. This is definitely not a something for nothing plan, but if fat loss and getting in better shape is a priority, you can find a way to do it.
The meal plans are good. I didn't see much that appealed to my taste buds, but with a little creativity you could probably come up with some good "Mackie Meals" on your own.
