I have read everything that she has written, I love her writing style. This book however, was just plain stupid. I had a hard time finishing it. I expected more from her.

I'd never read Nicci French before I happened across this book at Barnes & Noble. I'm not sorry I found it. What a ride! Her story of a woman's gradual disintegration is both horrifying and riveting. It wasn't a comfortable read. Instead, it touched places that, in the universality of their truth, made me distinctly uncomfortable. I couldn't put it down. Now I'm going out to look for the rest of French's books. If they're as good as this one, she has a new convert.

I have read most of Nicci French's novels, starting with "Killing Me Softly," which I consider the best of the lot. This book, "Catch When I Fall," was a master chore to finish. I read books to be entertained, no matter the genre. I was not entertained with this novel. I felt nothing, in fact I found it to be laborious to complete. Some part of a book usually reaches out and grabs me, whether it be fear, humor, disgust, heart beating romance ,or some action-adventure, but this book and Holly Krauss bored me. Her long winded descriptive details of her miserable life bored me. I skimmed pages and would stop and read the same pathetic boring drivel. The only characters that I found even remotely interesting were her husband Charlie and her best friend Meg... Not what I expected.
Dizzying Insight into Bi-Polar, With Mystery and Suspence As A Bonus.......2006-05-30
I love mysteries, I love psychological suspense thrillers. Nicci French manages to combine both genres into this ingenious story about the suffering endured by those afflicted with Bi-Polar Disorder and the suffering of those whose lives touch them. Ms. French never fails to offer us a wonderfully woven mystery, develop interesting characters, and give us necessary information at the same time. This story keeps us guessing until the end, and wraps it all up nicely, showing us that even those among us who suffer psychological disorders can have happy endings. One of her best books yet!

I enjoyed THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE DEAD and did not want it to end. I like the series and hopes Mr. Bain sends Jessica to my hometown of Richmond, Virginia. I bet Jessica would find it an enjoyable trip, regardless of the murder. If you have time to read a book this year, make sure one of the books is this one. Even if you don't like "brainless entertainment." It is good old-fashioned fun.

I once heard a joke about a man named Leroy who knew everybody and apparently he was related to Jessica Fletcher because she has friends everywhere. In this entry in the "Murder She Wrote" series Jessica is visiting friends in Mesa Arizona and has plans for a wonderful vacation. Part of her itinerary involves taking in some minor league baseball because Ty Ramos, the foster son of her Mesa friends plays for the local AA team. Problems arise however because Ty plays shortstop as does Junior Bennett who just happens to be the son of the team owner and the tension on the team rises to a fever pitch when the manager replaces Junior with Ty late in the championship game.
Junior is an obnoxious and rotten character and you can see his death coming from a mile away just as you will be able to figure out that Ty is going to be the chief suspect. Subtlety is generally not one of Mr. Bain's strong suits but that hardly detracts from these stories once you are used to it. Jessica as you can imagine, jumps right in and starts trying to prove Ty's innocence and her sniffing around soon begins to pay off. Just her mere presence helps Ty in court because the judge just happens to be a huge fan of her mystery books. In the end it all boils down to who had access to the an aluminum baseball bat that was used to kill Junior but Jessica still has to do a lot of thinking because at one time or another almost everyone involved seems to have had that bat.
This is a highly enjoyable book but unfortunately it sometimes fails to draw the reader into the story the way it should. As usual Mr. Bain does an excellent job of portraying the characters and the setting but it seems that Jessica just happens to bumble into the solution for this case rather than getting the job done with her considerable detective skills. While she does have to put her deductive skills to work she wouldn't have solved this one without some plain old good luck. There are really just too many coincidences in this story for it to be considered one of the best books in this series, but it is still a very good book and one that no fan of the series will want to pass up. As an added bonus the author finally seems to explain why Mort Metzger's wife has a different name on TV from the one she has in the books. That disparity was a mystery truly worthy of the attentions of the astounding Jessica Fletcher.

Center fielder, Harvey Blissberg, wasn't happy about the move. After five good seasons with the Boston Red Sox, they left him unprotected in the expansion draft, and before he knew it, he was on his way to play for the Providence Jewels. But that's baseball, and the season wasn't a total loss. This was his best year, yet. He was really in the groove, hitting above 300, leading the Jewels in batting, doubles and stolen bases, and dating the very beautiful and talented sportscaster, Mickey Slavin. But all that good fortune came crashing down around him when his friend and roommate, relief pitcher, Rudy Furth, was found murdered in the club house whirlpool. What kind of trouble could Rudy have been into that would get his head bashed in with a baseball bat? Being a mystery writer with my debut novel in its initial release, I genuinely enjoyed Richard Rosen's STRIKE THREE, YOU'RE DEAD. Having written, early in my career, a series of mystery short stories set against a bush league baseball backrop, I know well the territory Mr. Rosen is exploring. Harvey Blissberg is a star player on the expansion Providence Jewels. He was once a star for the Boston Red Sox. His best friend is murdered, and Harvey finds himself forced to solve the crime. This book won an Edgar in its initial release. FADEAWAY, STURDAY NIGHT DEAD, and WORLD OF HURT followed it. Now a decade later, Mr. Rosen is resurrecting his series in a few months with DEAD BALL. Baseball and Murder what a pair.......2001-08-08
If you're a baseball fan and a murder mystery fan then you will enjoy this work from R.D. Rosen. Harvey Blissburg, star player on a hapless expansion team, is suddenly involved in a sensational mystery as his best friend and star reliver Rudy Furth is found murdered in the whirlpool. With the help of Mickey, his sportscaster girifriend, Harvey doggedly puts together the pieces of the puzzle trying to find out who murdered his best friend. One red herring after another intervenes - a love struck fan, an inept and unscrupulous cop, the team manager's amourous wife who has a story of her own to tell and a small time hood. But Harvey presses on, all the while trying to hang on to his fading career and reach a .300 batting average.
The book gives an amzingly detailed portrait of a baseball season as a backdrop for the murder. This will appeal to baseball fans (such as me). But the author does not spare any detail in providing the reader with clues as to who the murderer is. He balances the drama of a baseball season with the drama of a murder mystery and does it very well. I read this book in a day because I did not want to put it down.
Strike Three You're Dead has alot to offer for baseball fans and murder myatery fans. It is very entertaining and spellbinding.

Every now and then you pick up a novel and start to read and know after only one page that the book is going to be a winner. "Strike Three You're Dead" is one of those books. Chicago, 1938: Capone is in prison, the Cubs are in third place, and Steve Malik, Chicago Tribune police reporter, has a handle on his drinking, mostly.
They say location is an important element in any mystery and that is certainly the case with this one. You walk the streets of the nation's second largest city blanketed by the shadow of the Tribune Tower, feel the breeze coming off Lake Michigan, and hear the rumble of the El as you sense the cold tension in the air caused by the remnants of Capone's organization, old time gangsters still at war with the cops and politicians.
Baseball plays a supporting role in this tale. Dizzy Dean and his Cubs teammates pop in and out, frequenting Malik's hangout, Kilkenny's Bar and Grill, as they struggle to capture the National League title and ultimately face the Yanks in the '38 World Series.
There's a smidgen of a romance that goes nowhere, maybe to be rekindled in a sequel, and there are walk-on parts played by the famous and near famous of the times peppered throughout the book. But this is a crime novel. The murder of a leading Republican mayoral candidate is front and center. Steve Malik must solve the crime, and find the true killer, not the suspect the cops have hung it on, before he too is another static buried in the legacy of the era.
Robert Goldsborough is a writer. His diction, prose, and style reflect the many years he spent in professional journalism as a reporter with the Chicago Tribune and other prestigious publications.
If you enjoy well written, intriguing mystery novels order "Three Strikes You're Dead." You won't be disappointed.

Began slow, but then kept me turning the pages.......1998-08-17
This book was on my reading list and as usual I thought it would be a boring book. To my surprise, only the first couple of chapters were boring and the rest was all extremely exciting. The detail that the author used also helped me in picturing what was going on in the story.

WAY COOL!.......2005-09-15
When I first read this book I was floored. The main characters are female and unlike most stories they are strong and able to kick some serious butt. Anne and Katherine (The two main female characters) from the very beginning are determined to survive. They are let go by a General Veers at the start. This is very important to the story. From that point on the two women begin to see all the horrors of a world gone mad. They meet a few friends along their journey who help them find the information they need for their lord who dwells in the Skies of Durin.
Some of the characters in this book are actually really cool in a Boba Fett from Star Wars kind of way. They only appear for a short time but you cannot help but loving them. Even the ones who only appear for a few pages and then are gone. You can feel the pain they are going through. The biggest example is a dwarf named Gregor. I'm not going to give anything away but his pain is horrific and you cannot help but shed a tear.
Some of the descriptions of the fighting are really gruesome but that is what a science fiction and fantasy book are supposed to be like. I love how this book blends almost seamlessly the use of swords and cannons with flying airships. It is Final Fantasy as it was meant to be.
The way the dark elves are portrayed is both evil and yet at the same time they are heroes to their cause. The deeds that they do at the beginning are redeemed at the end. What more could a person ask for?
This book has everything in it. Love and hope and death and despair. I also really love how the author included the city of Detroit in his story. It may not seem like much but the incident that takes place in Detroit is vital to this story. It lets you into the mind of a mighty general and his underlings.
All things said this book is extremely fast paced and a real page turner. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. I just only wish it were a whole lot longer as there is just so much more the author could have written about. Hopefully the author will write another book and fill in the left out details. All in all I just love this book to death. LONG LIVE FREEDOM IN THE SKIES OF DURIN!

Excellent book.......2007-07-30
This is by far the best book that I have read on any life transforming physical exercise including other books on this subject, as well as books on yoga and tai chi. The author writes simply and masterfully. He promises an easy to learn, easy to do "exercise", and delivers. This book has none of the New Age psycho-babble that mucks up so many other books on the subject.

The author has written a clear & practical book, with compact and understandable information about Qi Gong in general plus some nice information about what it has done for him personally.
It has good instructions and a lot of black and white photos which are easy to follow.
I found the excercise sequence very simple to do. It is relaxing and indeed takes less then 10 minutes to perform.
I think this book is a great start for beginners. Anyone can do these excercises.
If you're interested in other, longer and more intensive Qi Gong forms, I'd like to recommend the book 'The Swimming Dragon: A Chinese Way to Fitness, Beautiful Skin, Weightloss and High Energy' by T.K. Shih.
Not the best choice.......2003-03-14
When Qi Gong developed in China for more than 20 years, Chinese people finally find Falun Gong is the most effective. So there are more than 100 million Chinese people practice Falun Gong before the government's persecution.
But western society seems still enjoy the low level Qi Gongs.
Why not directly start from high level Falun Gong? It is not difficult. When you try, you will know.
There is an old Chinese saying: "Learn from the best".
Outstanding book!.......2003-02-11
Many of us want very much to do spiritual and physical exercises but never seem to find the time. This practice can be learned quickly from this most excellent book and takes only six minutes. I've been using the book for three months and have felt an increase in energy level, both physical and spiritual, already.
A great Qi Gong primer.......2002-07-23
Qi gong can seem overwhelming, which is why this book is a little gem. It gives you the essence of qi gong as well as a valuable start with 8 exercises, all very clearly demonstrated with a series of step-by-step photographs. Whether you just settle for this or decide to take it further, you would not be wasting money on this book.
