Book Description

The life of 31-year-old trophy wife Wynter Morrison suddenly changes course when her husband announces one evening that their marriage is over. Emotionally devastated and desperate for a change of scenery, Wyn moves to Seattle where she spends aimless hours at a local bakery, sipping coffee and inhaling the sweet aromas of freshly-made bread. These visits bring back memories of her long-ago apprenticeship at a French boulangerie, and when offered a position at the bakery, Wyn quickly accepts -- hoping that the rituals of baking will help her move on.

Working long hours among the bakery's cluster of eclectic women -- Linda, the irascible bread baker; earth mother Ellen and her partner Diane; and Tyler, the blue-haired barista -- Wyn awakens to the truths that she missed while living the good life in Hancock Park.

Soon Wyn discovers that making bread possesses an unexpected and wondrous healing power, helping her to rediscover that nothing stays the same... bread rises, pain fades, the heart heals, and the future beckons.

I loved this book. I loved the story ,the characters, the location and the recipes.... even tried a couple. This book I shared with friends and family. This book remains on my shelf for future rereading and of course, using it as a cookbook.

2 out of 5 stars Some Glimpses of Seattle; Weak Story.......2007-01-18

I bought this as I am a Seattle resident (also 20s/30s female like the main character). I thought it would be cool to find a book that combined the story of a woman's growth and a setting in Seattle.

Unfortunately, it's not a strong story. The main character is shallow and self-absorbed, and the other characters aren't compelling- and this doesn't change over the course of the story. The story revolves around the character's relationships to men and a couple of female characters (mainly her mother and her best friend)- not compelling alternative Seattle characters. I really don't feel that this is a compelling story of human growth or broadening horizons.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a great woman's book.......2007-01-06

It is a book of many situations. It is a book that I didn't want to put down. It had situations that many women today are facing, the problems that can arise in marriage, childhood, and finally the solution one woman chose.

This writer keeps you wanting to turn more pages. I won't reveal any of the characters or the plot, but I would like to re-read it, it is that kind of a book.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-12-02

This was an enjoyable book to read. Pour yourself some hot tea and relax in your favorite chair as you dive into the world of Winnie. This is a story about surviving and THRIVING after a divorce. This is a story about following dreams and finding out that you can survive difficult circumstances. Check out this author's website too!

Book Description

"A true story of human desperation, shattering in its impact."-Tennessee Williams

Driven by famine from their home in the Rif, Mohamed's family walks to Tangiers in search of a better life. But his father is unable to find work and grows violent. Mohamed learns how to charm and steal. During a short spell in a filthy Moroccan jail, a fellow inmate kindles his life-altering love of poetry.

The distinguished writer Paul Bowles, perhaps best known for his novel The Sheltering Sky, collaborated closely with Mohamed Choukri on the translation of For Bread Alone, and penned the introduction.

5 out of 5 stars A life on the fringe.......2002-10-22

I liked this book. That surprised me. This speaks directly to strength in narration and artistry of Mr. Choukri, who shows us, in this first volume of his autobiography, the despair brought about by ignorance and poverty. Our young man's apparent lack of hope for a better future is made clear from the start. In his teens, born in Marocco, during the French domination, he struggles to find the rules and reasons for the world around him. I say apparent lack of hope, because after the first few paragraphs we already know that he is sensitive, smart and will attempt to survive as best he can, without any help from his family or society. In this respect, I was satisfied early on, for I sensed it would be all right to attach my emotions to this hero; that he would not betray my confidence. Mr. Choukri's narration is also masterful in the depiction of the most despicable acts of violence both physical and moral. He is detached. So we can also keep our safe distance.

I confess to having a special reason for reading this book. Since I spent some time in the early 1980s in Oran, Algeria, I have been intrigued with the peoples of North Africa. And this book takes place in many of the cities and towns that are familiar to me. What surprises is to see that even though there was a good thirty years difference between the time this story took place and the 1980s, there were vestiges that for some, things still remained. I can only hope that there has been considerable improvement in the past 20 years.

This is a book that makes us think. And even though the subject: a disenfranchised youth in the life of petty crimes in the fringe of society is not unusual in the literature of developing countries, it is important to return to these themes once in a while, getting out of our comforatble, well educated bubbles, and rethink our own contributions to world around us.

I am a better person for having read this book. That's a sign of excellence.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Watch him grow in arrogance.......2002-11-23

This book is worth reading since it is provocative and has interesting observations about being Latino in the Ivy League. Particularly interesting is his encounter with Richard Rodriguez, who starts out as an enemy and becomes a friend and intellectual mentor of sorts. However, as the book progresses, it feels more like a revisionist explaining away of his shortcomings--why he couldn't commit to his girlfriend and how his confrontations earn him enemies, who of course are mean, petty people in his version of events. Navarette makes everything seems so extreme--it's either Fresno State or Harvard, with nothing in between. He seems shocked that almost every institution in his life from UFW to Harvard's RAZA group turns out to be imperfect so ends up basically condemning them as evil. It seems as if he is very good at pointing out the imperfections in everything around him and is obsessed with making people agree with him. The book ends abruptly and on a note of frustration as he gets fed up with the shortcomings of the educational system and leaves graduate school. You really have to start over to the introduction to get any sense of resolution that he has learned something from his experience and not just grown in cynicism and ego.

              5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2000-04-15

I loved this book because it describes the experience of those who are often overlooked: English speaking Mexican-Americans whose families have been here several generations. Navarrette questions the ethnic labels that have been imposed upon him (Latino, Hispanic) and rightly wonders why one can be considered Italian and American, or Irish and American, but not Mexican and American. For some reason the latter is seen as a contradiction. This book is interesting, well written and provides a good first person account of the college experience and the subsequent process of constructing one's own identity. I highly recommend it!

              4 out of 5 stars True-To-Life: An Interesting Read.......1999-07-13

I've experienced much of the same situations and feelings as a student at Berkeley and (later) as a law student at Stanford. I'm sure that one does not need to be an ethnic or racial minority to feel like a "fish out of water" at any major university, yet it still interesting to find out there are others like oneself. As a Mexican-American, I welcome the day when our presence on an elite (or any) campus is not an oddity, or a source of resentment ("You kept out my more-deserving cousin!").

In her debut outing as a mystery novelist, Pamela Thomas-Graham introduces the world to a delightful and exciting amateur female detective, Nikki Chase. At 30, Nikki has already eschewed a career on Wall Street to become a professor of economics at Harvard, her alma mater. She is brilliant, beautiful, ambitious, and black--a characteristic Thomas-Graham makes clear from the get-go. "Being young and black at Harvard requires advanced survival skills," she writes. "Seven generations of us have found it exhilarating, perplexing, difficult, and dangerous. For Rosezella Maynette Fisher, it was murder."

When Rosezella, Harvard's most powerful black woman and Nikki's good friend, dies mysteriously on the eve of a new school year, Nikki finds herself compelled to track down all the clues leading to the killer. A cast of richly drawn and complex characters helps and hinders her quest. For advice, she turns occasionally to Raphael Griffin, a cop who has traded the bougainvillea of the British Virgin Islands for the ivy of Harvard Yard. For moral support, she turns to Maggie Daily, a teacher, landlady, and poet whose rich stories and rolling tones provide the book with texture, history, and charm. Like any other good woman detective, Nikki has a love life as perplexing as the mystery to be solved. Her long-lost ex-boyfriend, Dante Rosario, returns to town, bringing with him more sizzle and spark than Nikki is prepared to handle.

Though it's not as dark and creepy as Paullina Simons's 1996 campus-based mysteryThe Red Leaves, A Darker Shade of Crimson captures all the power, tradition, and atmosphere of the Ivy League campus. And while Thomas-Graham does explore the social and political issues surrounding race at Harvard, she manages to avoid the pitfalls of turning a well-crafted mystery into a polemic. --L.A. Smith

              Book Description

Being young, gifted, and black at Harvard has never been easy. For Ella Fisher, outspoken and controversial Dean of Students at Harvard Law School, it was murder.

After Nikki Chase -- a smart, ambitious, attractive black economics professor -- stumbles over her friend Ella's body during a blackout in a classroom building, she finds herself plunged into the investigation of her death. In the process she uncovers some of Harvard's most deeply buried secrets.

Nikki learns that plenty of people could have wanted Ella dead. There's the debonair -- and married -- new Harvard president Leo Barrett. Many thought Leo and Ella were lovers, and now he's looking awfully guilty. The Chairman of the Economics Department suddenly, suspiciously, has a lot of money. And Ella's radical, Afrocentric ex-husband had apparently been blackmailing her.

With the help of Ella's two true friends, Nikki sets out to unravel the mystery -- and the complications of her own love life. Proving that love can be murder, she drives toward the shocking conclusion that will turn all of Harvard on its ear.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-07

So happy I stumbled onto this series...I really enjoyed the story, the discussion about race politics in academe, the romantic strife, and the murder mystery! Author is funny, smart, and the plot had enough twists and turns.

2 out of 5 stars Lost me !.......2006-06-09

When I first happened upon this book by a recommendatiion, becaude I am a lover of mystery/interracial romance novels, so when I read this book I thought I would really enjoy the storyline as well as the romance between Nikki and Dante
Big disapointed on both counts. Hard to follow and as far as a romance for the romance of any kind that was mentioned it could have been left out of the book.

              3 out of 5 stars A Good Series.......2006-01-05

I read the third installment first, then the first and now I'm halfway through the second and so far, this is the better of the three. I love the fact that while the three novels in the series were written and published over a 5 year period, their plots unfold over the course of one fall semester. This plot was great with lots of twists. I even learned a couple of new words as there was at least one new word per chapter. All characters had depth and were well rounded. The only character that was somewhat flat was Dante. I could see why Nikki developed solid friendships with Maggie, Jess and Rafe. I could even see why she disliked but respected her department chair, Ian. But for the life of me I could not understand the love-hate relationship between her and Dante. Every single encounter with him, save the last, brought out the absolute worst in her, with no discernable reason why. I would have given the novel 4 stars were it not for this flaw.

              4 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2005-09-22

This is a thoughtful, well-written, intelligent murder mystery. That in and of it itself would be good, but then to add a protagonist to whom I could relate so well personally, gives it an extra star!!!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to the romance/mystery genre.......2005-06-24

I checked this book (along w/PTG's other 2) out at my local library. This one wet my appetite for the other 2, but sadly to say...I'm not sure of Yale and Princeton are up the Harvard. Read all of them for yourself and let me know. It is nice to have a Black, female character in this role in higher ed!

                              Book Description

Rick Veitch's fierce and darkly comic BRATPACK has long been considered a subterranean classic of the genre. Now, at last, the notorious graphic novel that made the mainstream safe for totally twisted superhero satires is available in a new KING HELL trade paperback edition! Veitch's no-holds-barred dissection of the hoary old 'kid sidekick' phenomena is as harrowing as it is hilarious; subversively subtle yet completely over the top. BRATPACK is an edgy and unforgettable dance macabre that is a must for every graphic novel collection. With an introduction by Neil Gaiman. BRATPACK is a companion volume to Rick Veitch's THE MAXIMORTAL and was nominated for "Best Graphic Album" in the Eisner Awards in 1995.

Not at all what I expected from Rick Veitch; no new insights into the hero/sidekick relationship. In fact, pretty much is what I would expect from the myriad of lesser lights that flood the graphic novel market every year.

Ever wonder why there were so many teen sidekicks in golden and silver age comics? Okay, there was obviously Robin (three of them to date), assorted Superboys and girls, Wonder Woman's aide Wonder Girl, The Flash apparently had kids with super speed, Captain America had Bucky... and on it on it went. Basically they were there to give the heros someone to explain the plot to for some of their more ingorant readers. Someone that the kids could identify with, at least on a fantasy level. What Rick has done with this story is show us how dangerous this practice would be if done in a structure with actual consequences. And he does it in pure warped Veitch style. You've got the Midnight Mink, a sort of gay vampy Batman, JUDGEJURY, a facist Punisher type "Hero"(an impotent white supremicist muscleman on steroids), Moon Mistress, a WW type with serious man-hating issues (she makes candy treats out of cojones severed from male foes, brrrr!) and King Rad, a kind of Bruce Wayne on speed character bent on living the ultimate rush. All of these dangerous types are collectively known as "BLACK OCTOBER" (go figure), and are aware that they have comic books and merchandise based on their exploits a la the JLA or the Avengers. They figure teen sidekicks would help with sales, so they get some (leading to Chippy, Kid Vicious, Luna and Wild Boy, respectively). The problem is that they have no more enemies left, so they go after anyone who doesn't agree with them, which leads to the appearence of Doctor Blasphemy, a proported super-villain, who is actually the only person in the entire story who consistantly tells the truth. The teens get in the way and are killed, so new recruits have to be found and trained. Kids are recruited and shown their respective hero's secret identity. This takes us to the seamy underside of each hero's personal life, each with their own dirty little secret. Warped sexual identities, racial bigotry, social apathy, drug addiction, megalomania and religious faith are all taken apart and put back together askew in this satirical tale. This story is an offshoot of THE MAXIMORTAL with a link at the end to that storyline. I really can't say enough good things about this story. It's sick, it's shocking, its awe-inspiring, it's thought-provoking, it's edgy and ultimately, it's high-art! It's also hilarious in a black kind of way. If you like stories that take apart the Superhero mythos and parade it for the naked emperor that it is, then this is for you! (...)!

An indispensable guide to dealing with this potentially deadly allergy

Nuts and nut oils are found in countless foods and topical ointments/creams. They are also the leading cause of fatal and near-fatal food allergy reactions. Unfortunately, nut allergies are not as rare as they were once thought to be. According to U.S. and British studies, their prevalence has doubled over the last decade alone.

Co-written by a leading expert on nut allergies, How to Live with a Nut Allergy tells you what you need to know to:

As the parent of a newly-diagnosed peanut-allegic child, I've bought and read many books on allergies in the last few months. This is my favorite. It contains practical information and tips for dealing with a nut or peanut allergy. It is easy-to-read and includes real-life ideas for staying safe with a nut allergy, as well as being realistic that there are some limitations to places nut-allergic people can safely go. Even after reading several other books, there were a few new tidbits here.

I wish I had read this book first.

This book is clearly laid out with with all the basic information you will need to deal with a nut allergy. It would be useful for some one who is allergic to ALL nuts rather that just peanuts. It lists the many different types of nut and many not so obvious places you will find hidden nuts. Help is provided for the minefield of reading food labels. There is a good chapter on the use of medication in the event of an allergic reaction, and how to store and use your medication which is a useful reference to have should you ever need to explain this to anyone; such as a teacher or babysitter. My favorite chapter was on sending a nut allergic child to school. The authors give clear solid advice on what you will need to say and do to help make the school/daycare/preschool environment as safe as possible for your child. If you are starting off on a journey to learn more about nut allergy and how it will affect your life this book will help you.
