A Grand Story!.......2006-08-25
This fourth book in Griffin's Corps series is a stunner. The actual time of the book is actually quite short. The book runs from June 4 - August 24, 1942. It was during this time that the Americans invaded Guadalcanal, and Griffin's version of this bloody battle in the Solomon Islands is a page turner. We also get to know Griffin's main characters really well. People like Fleming Pickering, Charley Galloway and many others. This book has lots of characters and I think it would be hard to keep them all straight if a person read this book out of context. I recommend that the best way to read this Corps series is in order. It also makes it easier to follow the progress of WWII. I love Griffin's characters, but the history that I get from these books is wonderful too. I cannot wait to read the rest.
The Corps.......2005-10-27
This is not a good portrayal of the Corps. It glamorizes China Marines from the 3os, ultra-wealthy officers flaunting Marine discipline, excessive romatic encounters and little of the hard slogging by WWII Marines. The entire book is about Marine intelligence which is of some interest but not really the "Battleground" of the title.
False Advertising.......2005-03-15
Great book but what Amazon is advertising as the unabridged audio cassette edition is really the heavily abridged edition. Two 1-hour cassettes vs 18 hours for the unabrdged edition... Go figure! I feel just a tad raped...
A Waste of Time.......2003-01-14
I picked up these books hoping to gain some insight into the actions of the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. What I found instead was a sort of soap opera that rambles on for hundreds of pages without getting around to much actual fighting. For example, The Marines don't even get to Guadalcanal (their first major offensive) until the end of book III, some 1200 pages into the story. Those 1200 intervening pages are mostly conversations (ad nauseam) between stateside Marine Corps officers as they sit around headquarters, or go out on the town chasing skirts.
The small portion of the books that is devoted to actual battles is done in such a cursory fashion that you're left with the impression that the author either finds this aspect of the Marines' mission distasteful, or doesn't understand it well enough to write about it. Mr. Griffin could have deleted about 80% of his material, and would have ended up with better books, albeit still not good ones.
If you're the sort of person who likes to watch daytime soap operas, then you may enjoy these books. If, on the other hand, you're interested in military history, the banality of these books will leave you screaming in frustration.
Vintage WEB Griffin!.......2002-08-13
In this volume of the Corps saga , we see several of the characters introduced in "Counterattack" elevated to new prominence. Newly promoted Captain Charley Galloway becomes the commanding officer of VMF 229 , and along with Bily Dunn sets about preparing the young squadron to be thrown into the cauldron of Guadalcanal. Flem Pickering continues to grow in importance to the ongoing tale of incredible heroisim exhibited by the young Marines thrown into bloody conflict.
"Battleground" details some of the terrible privations experienced by the First Marine division on the 'Canal and the coastwatchers on Buka island. Steve Koffler and Joe Howard on Buka illustrate the importance of the little known coastwatcher organisation to the success of the Marine aviation assets in the Solomons. Koffler continues to grow in importance to the task of Captain/General Pickering in the Southwest Pacific Ocean Area (SWPOA). Even though Koffler and Howard are ill with parasites and other tropical diseases they continue to function "as Marines".Koffler continues to emerge as one of the more "colorful" characters in the story--look for him in future episodes!
Of the many volumes in "The Corps" saga , "Battleground" stands out as one of the more lively and entertaining volumes. A great read--I could hardly put it down. Have now read it 4 times!

Barely adequate Omaha book.......2007-02-15
I don't know what happened here, the author Tim Kilvert-Jones penned the truly excellent Sword Beach edition of the Battleground Europe series, and I bought this expecting it to be as good. Sadly I was wrong, this is frankly a very disappointing book. Firstly there are errors in the text - two photos of the German bunker at WN65 are labelled WN64, and a full page photo of troops onboard ship was taken off the other American beach Utah, and there is a modern picture of the lane leading to where the guns were inland from Pointe du Hoc - fine except it's the wrong lane. Secondly the battlefield tour unlike the highly detailed routes in other books in the series is very very basic - consisting of only 5 stands. The text fails to mention interesting places to stop and visit like the Dog White Sector and WN60 above Fox Red, and really just points out the monuments. Compared to the author's Sword beach book, this was a major let down for me.
Finally, the text section of the book before the battlefield guide part, is frankly "dull as dishwater". 50 pages is devoted to the overall planning of Overlord, which I would propose is not something the average buyer of this book would be looking for, as it is covered in hundreds of general D-Day books. For the actual Omaha beach portion, it used the same old standard US National Archive photos interspersed with maybe half a dozen brief veteran's accounts collected by the author. Also the text could have done with being broken down into clearly defined chapters relating to perhaps each beach sector or exit. All in all I'll stick with the word "disappointing."
I wonder if the publisher reduced the authors original manuscript to fit the format of the book?

I had never read any of the author's books before and was overjoyed at how GOOD they are. This series was unbelievable - make sure you have all three books when you start reading because as soon as you finish one, you have to read the next one - they are so good. I have never seen a male character portrayed so well as she did with Quillan - She makes you so relate with the characters and draws you into their lives in such a wonderful way. These books are so good and through it all she weaves God's Word and message into it in such a wonderful way - GREAT BOOKS!!!
The series ends but the characters live on.............2005-02-28
Quillan has agreed to take Carina back to her beloved Sonoma and family. Their journey is nothing compared to what awaits them when they finally do arrive.... Here is your typical Italian family who demands that protocol be followed, a very handsome (and faithless) ex-lover for whom we have been waiting 3 whole books to find out about, and then there is Papa. All of them will surprise and alternately anger and please the reader.
This last book of the series is probably my favorite. The real, deep and eternal love between Carina and Quillan shows so clearly I just wanted to SHAKE the whole family for their negativity, but, in the process I learned to respect and love Quillan and Carina all the more. Total love is being willing to let go if necessary, however painful.
Filled with lots of action and suspense, obviously, the author could not allow this to be a "happily ever after" without a firey trial of pain, raw emotions and near death for some of the main characters.....without revealing anything, I will just say, buy all three books at one time and you will never have to wait for the sequel..
A very excellent historical, Christian fiction love story and one that older teens should definitely read. Thank you Kristen!
WOW! THIS ONE IS A WINNER!.......2004-02-04
Whoah! I haven't read very many books where you felt like you knew the characters...in this one, I wanted to cry for Carina and Quillan! Anyway, this book takes place during the time that Carina and Quillan have finally admitted their love for eachother(heart flutter!). When they decide to visit Carina's family in Sonoma, California, the DiGratia family is in for a surprise that will turn them all against the couple. With her first love, Flavio, trying to get rid of Quillan and forcefully get Carina back, the husband and wife go through a lot of hard times. Questions flash through your mind - does anyone ever come to their senses? Can't they just accept Quillan? Will he and Carina ever be together again? My heart ached, and rejoiced while I read this book. Though, I must say, the author did a splendid job at making one get extremely involved with the lives of the characters. For example, I just wanted to hate Flavio with ever fiber of my being, yet Carina and Quillan showed me how to forgive him. I loved how the characters influenced how I felt about what was going on in this book. Anyway, before I tell you to much, READ!

This book should be on every pharmacy reference shelf whether it is in the corner drugstore or the hospital pharmacy. Herbal questions arise continuously in practice and very often the pharmacist does not have the information at hand. The sections in this book on pharmacological actions, clinical review, and clinical studies are especially valuable as these often do not exist in other herbal references. The information on clinical studies is displayed in a series of tables that are quick to scan yet are detailed. For Ginkgo there are six pages of clinical studies tables. Contraindications, adverse effects, and drug interactions are there also for each herb and there is just enough botany and chemistry to keep an academic interested. This book is thorough and yet concise. It covers the 29 best-selling herbs in the United States and the information on each plant is extensively referenced. I have recommended this book to my students and I am currently using it in my courses.

Excellent Resource.......2003-09-01
The ABC Clinical Guide to Herbs is an excellent resource for healthcare professionals and consumers alike. The information contained was compiled by a team of professionals including an MD and is the result of an exhaustive research of the available literature. The consumer section (called patient information sheet) contains a short and easy to read description of 29 most commonly used herbal products. The Clinical Overviews are written for physicians and other healthcare professionals and the Monograph is reserved for those who demand most detailed information about the respective herbal remedy. The book contains a wealth of information and is scientifically based.
I recommend it for anyone demanding straightforward and qualitative information about herbs.
A potentially useful book if.......2003-08-29
In fairness to the authors, this is a potentially useful book if you do not have any other books by Mark Blumenthal and you do not subscribe to periodicals by the American Botanical Council. It is far from the best of in its field, because it is given to restating the vocabulary rather than giving meaning, as in this description of milk thistle:
Hepaptoprotective; reduces serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and transaminases (ALT, AST), reduces triglyceride in serum; reduces malondialdehyde...
This is simply the ploy used by herbalists with a more limited grasp of technical terminology. One herbalist might say, "flushes the liver," which is meaningless, while these herbalists say, "reduces serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase," which is meaningless to most readers and of very limited clinical value to practitioners. Reduces GGT how? Through action on hepatocytes? By maintaining plasticity? By introducing variation in laboratory measurements without beneficials changes to tissue? Can we assume our patients are better if their GGT titers are reduced?
Dr. Blumenthal obviously reads and writes. He sees a scientific fact, rephrases it, and adds a citation. This may be impressive, but it isn't useful. And the focus is exclusively herbal. Physicians would be much better served to read Murray & Pizzorno's textbooks on naturopathy than this long vocabulary exercise.
Best of its kind!.......2003-08-27
Considering all the dreck that is out there, there book is a welcome addition. I consider it the best available book for both healthcare providers and for the interested lay public. It is both accurate and accessible - truly the standard reference on the topic.
