Band of Brothers.......2007-04-12
I thought that this was a good but sad story. The continue adventures of Richard Bolitho, midshipman. This time he and his friend have been assigned to fight smugglers.
Terrific series -- but a really really bad, really really short entry in it!.......2006-08-15
This is the most recently published of the more than two dozen novels in the Richard Bolitho naval series, but by the internal chronology, it comes third. It's here that Midshipman Bolitho is examined for promotion to lieutenant, and also here that he loses his best friend, Martyn Dancer, in a very minor action against a smuggler's brig. The problem with this extremely brief "novel" (a mere 113 pages, not counting the glossary and the selection from the next book in the series) is that the narrative and plot line are both as thin as muslin. It's almost a sketch of what ought to have been a full-dress novel three times its length. I found myself stopping to go back and reread a couple pages, thinking I'd missed something. And I kept checking the printed page numbers, in the suspicion that two had been glued together. The lieutenant's exam, for instance, has only just begun, maybe two or three basic questions asked, when suddenly it's over and Bolitho is being congratulated on having passed! When it becomes apparent Richard and his small party are going to have to capture a lugger on the beach in order to interrupt the loading of smuggled cases of muskets -- at least, I think that's what they're attempting to accomplish, it's never really clear -- the narrative jumps from the beach, to a moment in their own boat, to a few minutes after they take the smuggler's boat. If this were a movie, it would be littered with scene cuts and pages ripped from the screenplay. The whole thing seems to be a ploy on the author's part to bring in some extra dough without having done anything to earn it.

Four masked men -- thieves, rivals, and friends from the tough streets of Charlestown -- take on a Boston bank at gunpoint. Holding bank manager Claire Keesey hostage and cleaning out the vault was simple. But career criminal Doug MacRay didn't plan on one thing: falling in love with Claire.
With a tenacious FBI agent following his every move, Doug imagines a life away from his gritty, dangerous work. A life centered around Claire. But for Doug, that new life is just one final, perfect job away....Racing to an explosive climax, Chuck Hogan's brash tale of robbery in all its forms is an unforgettable odyssey of crime, love, ambition, and dreams.
Download Description
"The men wear masks. Their guns are drawn on the bank manager. She nervously recites the alarm code, and the tumblers within the huge vault fall. The timing and execution are brilliant. It could be the perfect heist. But as the huge sum of cash is stolen, so too is one man's heart -- and that man is the Prince of Thieves... Charlestown, a blue-collar Boston neighborhood, produces more bank robbers and armored car thieves than any square mile in the world. In this gripping, intricately plotted thriller, Claire Keesey, the branch manager for a Boston bank and one of an influx of young professionals chipping away at the neighborhood's insularity, is taken hostage during a robbery. She is released, but Doug MacRay, the brains behind the tough, tight-knit crew of thieves, can't get her out of his mind. Tracking her down without his mask and gun, Doug introduces himself, and as soon as he and Claire meet, their mutual attraction is undeniable -- as are the risks of a relationship. Meanwhile, Doug's crew pulls off another audacious, meticulously planned job. Frustrated by their ingenuity and brazen ambition, FBI Agent Adam Frawley begins to zero in on Doug and his pals -- and against his own better judgment, he, too, develops more than a professional interest in Claire. Under pressure from Frawley's ever-closer investigation, Doug imagines a life for himself away from bank robberies and Charlestown. But before that can happen, the crew learns that there may be a way to rob Boston's venerable baseball stadium, Fenway Park. It's a magnificently dangerous and utterly irresistible opportunity -- yet for Doug, pursuing his former hostage may be the most dangerous act of all... Chuck Hogan's brash tale of four men -- thieves, rivals, friends -- being hunted through the streets of Boston by a tenacious FBI agent, and the woman who may destroy them all, is a spectacular, stylish, heart-pounding thriller. Not Very Suspenseful or Involving.......2007-08-13
PRINCE OF THIEVES is well written, but I agree with the Publisher's Weekly Review that this book is a rather long-winded affair with largely unsympathetic characters.
This book is ultimately a simple story about a bank robber who wants to get out of the business. PRINCE OF THIEVES begins with him robbing a bank in the Boston area, and then developing a romantic relationship with a teller at that very bank. In an unlikely plot development, the FBI agent investigating the crime is also romantically interested in the woman, creating a dangerous love triangle of sorts. Meanwhile, the bank robber has to disentangle himself from the grip of his dysfunctional partners in crime, who don't want him to leave.
Hogan's writing is good, but verbose, with lots of stylish dialogue and description of details that don't really move the plot foward. I found myself skipping over quite a few paragraphs as I went along. The characterization is also oddly flat -- the bank teller, in particular, is not really fleshed out that much as a person. As a result, it's not entirely clear why the bank robber and FBI agent are so infatuated with her, which makes many of the romantic scenes unconvincing.
PRINCE OF THIEVES has some great prose, and does pick up speed toward the last fifty or so pages. But I found that book lacked momentum and I wasn't really engaged by it. So if you're looking for a fast moving page-turner, my advice is to go elsewhere.
Very good read.......2007-08-08
I almost didn't buy this book due to Publisher's Review comments and would have miised out on an excellent book. Enough character and plot to warrant the novel label as opposed to the usual wham bam thank you mam' mystery thriller.
The endng is heartbreaking and shows a very clear understanding of what makes people human.
Fast-paced, compelling story.......2007-07-25
I couldn't put this book down. I can hardly wait for the movie version. The author has a gifted way with words. His characters are believeable, as is the dialog. Young actors will be clamoring to play the tough Boston criminals, who think they can realize their dreams if they can steal enough cash to buy their way out.
The love story is a bit weak, but not completely out-of-step with the ideal of Catholic youth. Claire Keesey is the good girl from the good family, the kind of girl a straight guy would want to marry. Recovering alcoholic, Doug MacRay, wants to lead a clean and sober life, put his criminal nature to rest, and leave Charlestown with Claire; after one last big job.
Great Book.......2007-07-15
This is simply the best crime novel since "Mystic River" which is by another local, Dennis Lehane. It's an easy comparison. A a quartet of lifelong friends having been successfully robbing Boston area banks and getting away with it. They're all from Charlestown, a sister community with major similarities to Mystic River's supposed South Boston.Things get complicated when the female bank manager who is robbed inadvertantly attracts both the robbery mastermind and the FBI agent determined to bring them in.This is a book with a lot of character development, a zippy pace and a clear insight into this clannish Irish neighborhood. I couldn't take my nose out of it and heartily recommend it all around.
fun character driven thriller .......2007-07-13
They entered the Boston bank wearing masks with guns ready to be used. They point their weapons at the terrified bank manager demanding that she open up the vault. Stunned and frightened that she will die Claire Keesey provides the numbers to the criminal to open the vault. The thieves escape, but the leader takes Claire hostage, but once they are free he releases her.
The brilliant strategist Doug "Prince of Thieves" MacRay can not forget the trembling Claire. He wants her so sans mask he manages to meet the still traumatized bank executive. As they begin to date Doug, and his team pull off another bank job. FBI Agent Adam Frawley is in charge of the investigation, but though frustrated with the impudent robbers, he begins to think Doug is the mastermind and his Charlestown buds are the team. However, even he wonders if he wants Doug to be the bad guy because he is attracted to Claire too while the Prince of Thieves plans a final job before settling down with the woman he loves; he plans a walk off robbery of Fenway Park.
Although Doug spends an inordinate amount of time internally debating whether he should give up his vocation for love as his muses slows down the action, readers will appreciate this fun character driven thriller especially the dark caper scenes. The triangle consisting of the banker, the robber, and the detective is brilliantly devised as each seems genuine and their interactions plausible. The support cast enhances the locale or the understanding of the lead trio. Fans will enjoy Chuck Hogan's PRINCE OF THIEVES wondering who will be left standing with the girl.

Book Description
Originally published many years ago, this outstanding book, now revised, is still fresh and challenging to us today. It tells the story of a group of childrenmostly street beggars and orphansliving in the Adullam Rescue Mission in Yunan Province, China, under the care of missionaries H. A. Baker and his wife the grandparents of Rolland Baker, founder of IRIS Ministries in Mozambique.
These children experienced an immense and incredible outpouring of the Holy Spiritso great that they literally "experienced Heaven" through visions, were aware of the presence of angels, and were able to describe in great detail what they saw. The result of these experiences of God was fervent passion for worship, the Word of God, and prayer.

Visions Beyond the Vail.......2007-09-19
My wife and I found this book to be very exciting as it depicts how orphan children in China where provided with a home in an orphanage; how they were fed and clothes and taken care of. This - in and of itself - is a dynamic testimony of how Jesus Christ brings victory into the lives of these children. However, their experience of seeing visions and dreams of Heaven, of God, of Jesus and of angels is one to be envied. We strongly encourage you to read this book. You will not be able to put it down.
Sincerely, Rev. Richard and Holly Lang
Essential read!.......2007-09-01
This is an essential read for those who want more of God.
Story of these Chinese orphans who experience a radical outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The book documents their experiences and visions which will stretch your brain and wreck your heart.
It's a short read that should be in all believers libraries.
Inspiring and confiming.......2007-08-26
I rate this book very high as it offers hope for the Christian and even greater hope for the Christian missionaries. H.A. Baker's journal account of what the children in his orphanage experienced just confirms many of the testimonies of others in different parts of the world, even as recent as 2007. God is alive and He still reigns! Books like Visions Beyone the Veil are inspiring to motivate anyone with a desire, to Ask, Seek and Knock knowing that God will answer, you will find and He will open the door to understanding.
Visions Beyond the Veil.......2007-05-12
EXCELLENT.....10 Stars. If one reads with thirst for the Truth, with an open mind, the reader will be excited as they read through this non-fictional account of the experiences of a missionary and his wife to China in the early 1900s. If the reader has wondered what Heaven will truly be like, to read the spiritual accounts, experiences through the eyes of simple, x-street children, will bring the reader joy and encouragement. The accounts of what the children were seeing regarding Hades, will also encourage and motivate the Christian reader to be an active witness for Christ daily.
Visions Beyong the Veil.......2007-03-09
Awesome eye opener. If you're hungry to know more of the ways God deals with us here on earth, don't miss this one. I've met the Bakers on a mission trip to Mozambique & know them to to be very strong, hard working missionaries that you can trust. They love Jesus and the kids and it comes through when reading this book, how true they are to the calling God has given them.

Unveiling an Inquisitive Mind.......2005-09-11
Wow! This book really raises some serious, thought-provoking questions regarding female sexual status, and sexual self-determination in Arab-Muslim societies. If I had read this book in the 70s - when it was first written and published - I would have really thought of it as a classic work, but I wasn't born then.
Yet, the book is incredibly outdated. Mernissi does a good job in questioning the general notions (and misconceptions) widespread in her days about religion and the inferiority of women. However, she is out of touch with the contemporary revolutionary ideas that claimed Islam back from the selfish authority of the benighted "Mullahs," who misinterpted Islam out of ignorance, or to fulfill their own political agendas (as still happening in some Muslim countries, wherein Muslim women are subjugated and denied basic rights, such as education.)
Working at the courts in my conservative Gulf country, I witnessed cases in which women "self-determinedly" divorced their husbands, who could not satisfy them sexually. (Lol, awww! I can't believe I'm saying this!)
Even with some historical and Islamic inaccuracies (for instance, many hadiths - Prophetic traditions - quoted by Mernissi have been outruled as inauthentic by contemporary Islamic scholars, thus invalidating many of her arguments and theories), I found this book to be very interesting, and it sheds light - though indirectly, and perhaps unintentionally - on Moroccan history and culture. The chapter on Mothers-in-Law was especially amusing!
It is unfair to criticize the book without taking into consideration the fact that it was written decades ago, and until the latest edition (1985), it must have been current. Instead of complaining about the book and its outdated content, I think I'll just go ahead and write a well-researched book on the same topic!
First book by a Muslim feminine writer.......2004-12-07
When this book originally appeared, I did write a review and got in published in print media. In her work, I was happy to have been introduced for the first time from a pen of (western, muslim, voracious) female writer as to how this gender looked at Islam. I am glad that Fatima continues to provide interesting insights, and she is striving to keep people informed on the subject.
Very compelling, just a bit too academic.......2003-04-13
This book is like going through someone else's medicine cabinet. A fascinating look into the homes and bedrooms of the Middle East from a scholarly feminist perspective. The only problem is, it's a bit too scholarly to be a really quick and concise read. Still, Well worth buying.
A much needed book.......2002-10-23
Excellent book on the female condition in many Muslim societies. ... More books like this need to be written to stimulate debate and hopefully change.
An Excellent Study in Male-Female Relations in the MidEast.......2001-12-07
The topic of male-female dynamics in Muslim society is one of the main issues covered in the book, Beyond the Veil, by Fatima Mernissi. Mernissi covers a wide range of categories, all of which pertain to the female position in a Muslim society. Though much of the data comes from Moroccan society, the general subject matter attempts to describe all Muslim society. This book has two parts, one of which focuses on the traditional view of women, and the second, which focuses on a more modern and changing view of women¡¯s place in society. A fascinating look at women in Muslim society, this book pushes the reader to question previous biases, and take a look at women in a Muslim society from a Muslim perspective.
Beyond the Veil starts out by contrasting views on female sexuality. One view is that of Imman Ghazali, and the other view is that of Sigmund Freud. Ghazali claims that the female sexuality is active, and equal to the male sexuality. Therefore, females need to be restrained in order to prevent fitna (chaos) in the social order. Freud, on the other hand, sees female sexuality as passive, and therefore masochistic. Ironically, both theories attempt to prove the same point: that women, as uncontrollable beings, are destructive to the social order and need to be restrained.
Part two of the book starts out with interviews and data collection from Moroccan society. This information is mostly focused around sexual desegregation. Mernissi¡¯s conclusions basically say that the traditional/older generation is more sexually desegregated, while the more modernized/younger generation encourages desegregation. She also points out that rural societies are more sexually traditional than urban societies.
This book reveals much about Muslim society in a simplified manner. Mernissi draws her writings from various sources, including historical viewpoints, other writers on the topic, and interviews with Muslim women.
Beyond the Veil is not simply a one-dimensional view of male-female dynamics in Muslim society. The book covers all aspects of relationships between males and females, as well as the various positions women can take in a Muslim society. Mernissi allows for the reader to look three-dimensionally at the Muslim society, especially in regards to sexual space boundaries and desegregation, and form his or her personal opinion about the topic. Mernissi makes it somewhat simpler for the reader to understand the goals of the book by outlining the various dimensions as well as writing conclusions that draw from the section but also incorporate other ideas.
The objective of this book, explaining male-female dynamics in Muslim society, was quite clear and the writings of Mernissi certainly operationalized that objective. A non-fiction book that relied heavily on breakdowns of various interviews, Beyond the Veil, was more analytic than descriptive. However, this was an extremely effective way of scrutinizing the subject at hand. The information provided in the book would be particularly significant to those who are not familiar with Muslim society and wish to learn more about the ways in which males and females interact in this society.
Beyond the Veil explained many things to me, including the reasons behind female desegregation in Muslim society. Mernissi is thorough in her dissertation of male-female dynamics, and encourages the reader to form his or her own opinions about the topic. Beyond the Veil is a captivating look at the past, present, and future positions of women in a deeply complex Muslim society.

A Good Premise.......2007-05-12
The book started off a little slow , but I like the premise of becoming an alien, even though the other aliens know the posers are different. I think Reed is an excellent writer, having read Marrow, The Well of Stars and The Cuckoo's Boys.
Fascinating, mature Sci-FI.......2004-07-28
Mr. Reed is one of the better "new" sci-fi writers in the field... if you like original ideas, shape-shifter plots, or that "high lonesome" feeling of old Bradbury novels, this might be for you.
Don't bother applying if you feel sci-fi is best as a "blaster wielding, green alien slug fest"... this novel and its follow up will make you ~think~, and perhaps dream, of alternate realities.
After reading both books in this (so far short) series, I have been completely haunted, and have re-read both books numerous times since. Quite original - devastatingly believable.
Posing as SF.......2002-01-10
This novel did not work for me. The plot was built around a silly premise, and several idiotic notions. Cornell, as a character, seemed like a two-dimensional cardboard cut-out, and gave me absolutely no sense of feeling for him. At the end, I felt like I had been stuffed full of too much Sweet 'n' Low - the book had a few good ideas and themes stuffed in behind the rest, but not nearly enough to constitute anything of any real worth. However, out of everything bad I've said about the book, it earns an extra star because of the author's writing style. While I didn't enjoy the book, I did like the style of writing the author used to elaborate on those ideas. Unfortunately, this is one of Reed's better novels. Which isn't saying much.
Great characters no surprises.......1999-07-07
Good writing and characterization but not much on plot and definitely no action. Don't be fooled by the interesting looking cover. The surprises didn't surprise. It's like a 1st contact story that condenses the contact to 10 pages after 300 pages of setup and then ends abruptly with nothing happening in between.
makes the reader think about his real purpose in reality.......1998-02-18
"beyond the veil of star" a book solely for those who haven't forgotten what dreaming was all about. The world of dreams has no defined landscape exept the mind which is limitless, robert reed takes me back to a childlike state in the nostalgia of this book.

Absolutly Astonishing - God Does Answer Prayer.......2003-06-15
As I read this book I was surprised at how one person could go through so much hurt and pain and still keep trusting in God. I know Esmie personally and you wonder "How did she do it". She is such a loving and forgiving person. No matter what she went through she never gave up her belief in God. She trusted God for absolutly everything in her life.
I could hardly set the book down once I started reading it. A real tear jerker.
May God richly bless Esmie and Pastor Branner.
FOR ALL WOMEN: On Choices about Love, Marriage & Religion.......2002-08-26
Branner's "Beyond the Veil of Darkness" is a moving account of one woman's amazing journey. Turning her back against all the values that she had being taught in her childhood, the author decides to marry someone whose faith is in total opposition to her own. Her choice brings about terrible consequences.
Her husband takes her away to his country -Saudi Arabia- where she is literally ostracized. Once there, she must wear an "abaya"-traditional black outfit and veil-, does not speak the language, has no other link to the world except for him, is prohibited from communicating with her family, cannot practice her faith, and worst of all her boys are practically kidnapped by their father and sent away to India to be indoctrinated in their father's religion.
Esmie's tribulations are heightened because she does not know about the whereabouts of her children or husband for months. She has been practically abandoned with two little girls in an apartment without food, money, or any type of emotional support.
How she was able to survive, leave Saudi Arabia, take all her children with her, maintain her mental sanity and above all continue to manifest such unwavering faith in God, are just a few of the poignant situations narrated in this story.
A must read for women who are thinking about entering or are already in relationships with men of a different faith.
This book was uplifting and compelling.......1999-04-01
Oh wow! The Lord works in mysterious ways all exemplified in the testimony of this faitfull woman. This was a fantastic book filled with many delimas that were all transpired by the religious boundaries set in the middle east. But Esmie made it totally evident that a person in God is has no boundaries in their faith. AMEN
