"In this eagerly awaited new installment in Joan Medlicott's USA Today bestselling series, sadness gives way to new joys as the unforgettable Ladies of Covington -- Hannah, Grace, and Amelia -- deal with daily life in their small mountain town. Troubles have laid a dark cloud over the usually cheery farmhouse of the three ladies. Grace is grieving over the loss of someone dear to her, and then a mysterious diary from the past turns Hannah's life upside down, destroying her peace of mind. To raise everybody's spirits, Amelia suggests they take an exotic Caribbean cruise. Though they return with many wonderful stories to share, living in such close quarters has increased the brewing conflict between Amelia and Hannah. When Amelia leaves for a photography workshop in Maine, she's unsure if she'll want to continue living in their farmhouse afterward -- or if Hannah will still be there, since Max is pressing her to set a wedding date. Grace learns more than she wants to about modern dangers as her young protege, Lucy, becomes involved with an internet predator, and the ladies and their friends all rally to the rescue. When Grace lands in the hospital shortly afterward, though, she realizes she can no longer hide behind the dramas of everyday life, but must face her diabetes head on. Yet new joy enters their lives when Hannah's daughter has a baby boy, increasing their extended family. And when Hannah finally lays her past to rest, she's able to set a wedding date with Max, giving them all cause to rejoice. With warmth and charm, this straight-to-the-heart celebration of female friendship will inspire and delight readers whether they're meeting these three strong and wonderful women for the first time, or renewing their acquaintance with the ladies and their friends. After the fire.......2007-08-25
In this fifth installment of the series, the ladies are well settled into their new home after their original one burned. As usual there are problems. Hannah and Amelia begin to bicker, Hannah receives an upsetting diary which brings up past sorrows, and Grace is grieving over a death. The ladies go on a cruise, but they return to the same problems after their vacation is over. There are some things to celebrate, such as the birth of a baby and a wedding date being set. In my opinion, the subplots concerning Grace's young friend, Lucy, are a bit awkward and seem out of place, and the one in this book is no exception. I feel that the books are popular because they show that senior citizens can still lead active and useful lives and the characters comprise a warm and intertwined extended family. There is a lack of literature written for and about this age group and these books fill that need.
Covington.......2007-07-28
The Ladies of Covington series is an inspirational fantasy for women my age. It is easy to relate to each personality and they are so varied, each bringing an admirable trait. The series just keeps getting better.

I'm currently reading Joan's third book. The stories are very interesting and I like the fact that the same characters are carried over to the next book. Keep up the good work Joan. I'm looking forward to reading all her books!

In this day and age of skepticism, you only have to live your life like these three lovely ladies, and there would be no war, no hatred. But most important there would be no loneliness.
At home in Covington.......2007-01-26
Loved the book. Just a good story full of continuing good things about the ladies and their lives in a small town setting. How getting older doesn't have to stop how we do things it just improves with age. I loved all the Covington Ladies books. The stories just kept getting better. A must read for all ladies who think life is over at 60 but it can be the start of new things we never thought we could do just dream of. Life doesn't stop it just keeps moving forward. Don't be left behind.

absorbing.......2005-12-09
This book tells the story of Keller Hayes, a young man living in a small mining town in Alabama, who has to learn how to make his way in a harsh world during a series of life changing events. Through marriage, childbirth, poverty, and war, Keller must make sense of his life while understanding that suffering and loss are usually inescapable. The cold and damp of the camp seem to soak into each of the characters so that you feel his or her burden seperately and with acute empathy. Coming away from this novel I could almost smell the coal dust in my clothes and sense the indestructable tie that bind one family to another. Covington has the ability to transport the reader into her world and make you never want to leave.
I think this book mwas excelent because.......1998-05-07
it was about teens in the SOUTH. In the story, Keller matures a lot because he deals with sex, marraige, and death. I think this book is great, but SOUTHENERS will appreciate it more, not Yankees.. HAHA!!

The Publishers Weekly reviewer must be catatonic.......2004-12-06
I picked up this book earlier this week at a used-book store and was pleasantly surprised. Not only was the mystery good, but a female sleuth who did not irritate me (as so many other feminine sleuths do, e.g. Kinsey Milhone, Stephanie Plum, Kay Scarpetta, and yes, Miss Marple, too). I'm no geologist but unlike the PW reviewer I have no quarrel with the jargon in this book, nor do I need it all explained to me. I grasped more than enough to lend color to the story, but was not so overwhelmed with inconsequential minutiae that I was in any danger of confusing this work with the relentlessly pedantic Patrick O'Brian (who impresses so many people with his fabulously tedious vocabulary that they have come to consider his work as literature). I am curious as to whether the author can keep me interested in this heroine over the course of multiple books - so few series really hold up well as the lead character progresses (or does not). Certainly the setting has the ring of authenticity rather than merely fine research, and the author has a knack for the occasional turn of phrase that can make mystery occasionally magical - not so much that the author seemed to be reaching for poetry, but enough to capture my fancy and make me eager to turn the page. I'm looking forward to reading A Fall in Denver next.
Hot Babes and Oil Rigs.......2003-02-17
A hot babe on an oil rig, what more could you want in a mystery novel?
All of the novels in the Em Hansen series refer back to our young heroine's experience on the oil rigs of Central Wyoming. If you are a fan of the series, Tensleep is a must read. I am really surprised that this, Sarah Andrews first (and in some ways best) novel is out of print. The book is great. It is worth the $$$$ you will have to pay for a used copy.
In Tensleep, Em Hansen begins to discover her inner talents as an investigator. With a shiny new degree in geology, Ms. Hansen lands the traditional male job of mudlogger on a drilling rig. While handling all the garbage dished out by the good ole boy network in drilling, our young heroine finds more than she bargained for: The rig she is working is plagued by mysterious deaths and sabotage.
The work is fascinating, as Sarah Andrews describes the politics and processes of drilling for oil.
Sarah Andrews makes excellent use of drilling as a literary device. Em Hansen must solve both the mysteries of the oil company and that of the Tensleep formation. In my humble opinion, Tensleep is one of highlights of the Em Hansen series. I hope the publishers get their act in gear and print up a new edition for Sarah Andrews fans.
Good mystery novel.......2001-03-24
I enjoyed reading this book although, not being a geologist myself, I found the wealth of details on drilling and the oil industry sometimes slowed it down. The heroine is likable albeit strangely defenseless for a woman who opted for a non-traditional career . The secondary characters are well drawn. All in all, an interesting story.
Tidy little mysteries with an engaging heroine.......2000-01-17
Sara Andrews has written a series of wonderful, human-scale mysteries about a woman geologist who has a habit of running into murders. She is a very approachable character, vulnerable, smart, dedicated, and hopeful-a very nice profile of a professional woman in a "non-traditional" field. In all her dealings with co-workers, family, lovers, and friends, she is entirely believable. A good read and a good series...I've read them all now, except the newest, which I just found had been published.
Impossible to put down!!!.......1999-01-29
I, too, am a female geologist working in the oil industry. I actually began reading this book while I was out on location at the wellsite. I was riveted by the very first sentence! I began looking over my shoulder, wondering if the driller or mudlogger had murderous thoughts. Her description of the mechanics of drilling wells and explanations of geology were accurate yet easily understood by those not familiar with either geology or drilling. I enjoyed reading about another woman handled being the lone woman in a male-dominated field. I'm hooked and will be reading the rest of her books

Wow. Just Wow........2003-10-06
When I first laid hands on this book, it was merely the cover that caught my attention, having just turned from classic fiction to science--fiction and fantasy epics, and this being my first one, I didn't know what to expect. The back cover made it seem like my kind of book, so I decided to give this old book a chance at catching a place in my heart. To think I doubted. To think I doubted is enough to make me feel unclean, like most of the creatures in there, but not he book itself, no, definitely not the book itself. This book deserves too much praise.
I believe, once I've read the first chapter/prologue, that this book is sure to prove a captivating fantasy, how true it is that the beginning lays the foundation for not only the book, but the way you think about it, too. Oh, who could not notice the bright descriptions so deep and so true that just the mere beauty of it would make one snicker at a picture, so deep, and so grasping. Who could not pity Edward, for all his brutality, he died a fateful death at the age of sixteen!!! Who could not frown at Ethelred, and laugh inspite of themselves, and regret it with horror afterwards? Yes, who could not despise Angelo, and yet wish they had that same brilliance, dreaming on and on??? Of course, who could not hate Elfryth, a queen evil enough to rule with more of an iron fist than even Satan? Jadrien Bell, a. k. a. Christe Golden did such a wonderful job of making us care about the characters, that by then, I could feel a deep pleasure swelling up in me at the most austere part of the book, and still love Kennag and the crippled boy monk later.
Now, I'm not much of a spoiler, so don't try to get the ending from me. But one hint though, Elfryth's death haunts me to this day. Having read and discovered all the big names in science fiction and fantasy epics written by professional and non--professional critcs, I concluded that to make the reader actually care about a certain character or two can make even the most mediocre of stories interesting. I bet Christie Golden realized that, and she no doubt did a fine job of it at the beginning, wasting no time. But even if I did not care about it, the story overall still clung to my hand like an atomic magnet. That amoungst all the science fiction and fantasy epics are few. The more experienced readers will surely agree with me on this one.
When I finished the book, I regarded Christie Golden with great respect, expecting other books with equal powers to astound, and the same unwillingness to leave. But when I found out that this was her best novel ever, I wasn't surprised. Oh, woe is me and anyone who will ever look upon this book with indifference. It had definitely found a place in my heart.
A good mix of fantasy and history.......2002-02-15
Weaving a plot using Bible prophecy and Nordic sagas, the author has created a novel with an intricate plot which is well crafted and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The story takes place at the turn of the first millennium. Many of us faced fears at the turn or our millennium but immagine Alwyn a monk and Kennag a pagan woman as they join forces against Satan in the guise of Angelo. Using Britian's ruler and the trickster Nordic god Loki, Angelo plans to usher in the Apocalypse and rule the earth.
I thought the novel was unique and imaginative, and I hope to see another Jadrien Bell historical fantasy available in the near future.
Zippy Read.......1999-12-15
Bell offers a fun, fast light read here. Those who know medieval history will perhaps be bounced out by a lot of small errors (and a couple of not-so-small ones) but readers who like generic medieval-flavor fantasy will have a good time with this book. The heroes are likable, the bad guys really bad (what they lack in smarts they make up for in enthusiastic evil). There are no new ideas here, but what Bell lacks in perception of medieval paradigm--and how it was changing--is made up for in page-turning action, razzle-dazzle magic, and a really fun Ragnarok.
Stunning - Wonderful - Marvellous.......1999-11-18
I haven't a fraction of the writing talent that Ms. Bell displays in this book and can't hope to do it justice, but I have to say something!
I loved it! Only the inconvenience of having a job stopped me reading it in one sitting - it took me two days!
The way in which the author has woven diverse threads of pagan mythology with christian apocalyptic prophesy works perfectly. It never felt contrived or forced.
Angelo is beyond machiavellian, and the reluctant relationship between the two heroes works very well too. Add to that some of the "stranger-than-fiction" characters and events from history and you have AD999.
I loved this book-a great millenium thriller.......1999-11-09
When God created a being in his image, an insurrection occurred in Heaven with the reactionaries led by the supreme being's beloved Lucifer. However, the revolt fails and God casts Lucifer and his followers from Heaven. They are doomed to reside in Hell away from God's glow. Satan reigns in Hell and is stepping closer to dominating the earth. His final plan outlined in the Book of Revelations begins when the Anti-Christ walks the planet.
Once before, Satan came close to victory. In 999 A.D., people believe the world is coming to an end. Satan, disguised as the Roman Angelo, murders King Edward so that his selected puppet Ethelred becomes England's monarch. For the next two decade, chaos rules the land. The signs of the Apocalypse are visited upon the people and God appears to have forsaken humanity. Instead of abandoning mankind, God selects two special individuals to act as his Witnesses. On first look, a crippled monk with a useless hand and a Scottish midwife seem as poor a choice as anyone could make. However, the divine creator has bestowed special powers that combined with courage and purity might defeat the seemingly invincible Satan.
Anyone who enjoys apocalyptic fiction will gain much pleasure from reading 999 A.D., a frightening story that seems very real. The exciting story line combines historical tidbits including millenia hysteria with religious beliefs that make for a genuine feeling tale. Angelo comes across as a Middle Ages crazed serial killer (as expected of Satan in any guise) that adds to the overall terror. Jardien Bell has written a fascinating novel perfectly timed for Millennium buffs.

Book Description
People have been using herbs to fight disease and promote wellness since prehistoric times. In recent years, science has gotten into the act and amassed quite a respectable body of evidence to support what healers the world over have been saying for centuries – herbal remedies work. Experiencing the heartbreak of psoriasis? A little dandelion root can clear it up. Grandpa’s sciatica acting up again? St. John’s Wort ought to put the spring back in his step. Got a bad case of poison ivy? Stop the itch with echinacea. Ginger tames the morning sickness beast – lavender and peppermint leaf also work well. Use licorice, chamomile, and wild yam root to pacify an irritable bowel.
If you’re one of the millions of people who feel let down by conventional health care, or who’ve experienced unpleasant or harmful side effects from modern medicines, Herbal Remedies For Dummies is a book you’ll want to have. Written by fourth-generation herbalist Christopher Hobbs, it gets you up to speed on what you need to know to:
- Choose safe and effective herbal products
- Treat scores of common ailments and conditions
- Find specific herbal remedies for women, men, and kids
- Grow and harvest herbs
- Create herbal products at home
Chris clears up much of the confusion surrounding herbal medicines. He anticipates just about every question you’re likely to have about herbal medicine, and he provides concise, interesting answers laced with fascinating details from history and folklore. From alfalfa to yerba santa, he describes an array of best natural remedies, and he supplies:
- Easy-to-follow instructions on how to select the best herbal products
- A Symptom Guide – simple and easy herbal remedies for more than 80 common conditions, listed alphabetically by symptom
- An Aroma Guide – an A-to-Z guide to 100 easy-to-find medicinal herbs
- More than fifty recipes for healing teas, oils, tonics, and more
This friendly, caring, and accessible introduction to the world of herbal medicine is an important resource for anyone looking for a safe, easy-to-use alternative, or supplement, to conventional medicine.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2000-05-02
I own about a dozen books on herbal medicine and I keep finding myself back to this one time and time again. It is well written with a ton of useful information ranging from uses, terminology, cautions, and best ways to use the herbs. A must have for anyone interested in herbal medicine
Excellent information, not just for dummies!.......1999-10-15
I found this book very well written and very well balanced. It is invaluable for the newcomer to herbs, and would be a valuable addition to the bookshelf of a more experienced user too. It's one of those books which sits in my kitchen and gets referred to almost every day.
