Book Description
For almost 20 years, Mercedes Lackey has been one of the leading lights in the fantasy genre. With Arrows of the Queen, she introduced readers to Valdemar, a world full of fascinating creatures and compelling characters. This first story features Talia, a young girl desperate to escape the strictures of her conservative society. Her life is changed in an instant when she encounters a Companion and is chosen to replace the recently murdered Queen's Own Herald. As she begins her training Talia has no idea that a spoiled Princess, some nobly-born bullies, and a conspiracy that will threaten her life will all stand between her and the destiny she must fulfill.

Chosen by the Companion Rolan, a mystical horse-like being with powers beyond imagining, Talia, once a runaway, has now become a trainee Herald, destined to become one of the Queens's own elite guard. For Talia has certain awakening talents of the mind that only a Companion like Rolan can truly sense. But as Talia struggles to master her unique abilities, time is running out. For conspiracy is brewing in Valdemar, a deadly treason which could destroy Queen and kingdom. Opposed by unknown enemies capable of both diabolical magic and treacherous assassination, the Queen must turn to Talia and the Heralds for aid in protecting the realm and insuring the future of the queen's heir, a child already in danger of becoming bespelled by the Queen's own foes. An all around wonderful, rich tale!.......2007-06-13
I read this book after I read the Last Herald-Mage trilogy. Yet this book is the first of the books focusing on Valdemar and its Heralds. I actually like having a fuller understanding of Vanyel before reading this book. Knowing the legend first somehow made the story richer for me.
I adored this story. Talia is the main character and she starts the book off at age 13. Calling where she was raised oppressive is somewhat an understatement, but you get the idea. Luckily, before she can be married off, she is chosen by a Companion, Rolan. She will become a Herald. Thus begins her adventure as she travels to the Collegium for an entirely new and challenging, yet rich life.
I found it fascinating to see Talia waking up to life in a different way...a miraculous change too. She was sheltered...shy...did her best to hide her own emotions. She trusted nobody, asked for no help and feared all men. It's the journey I find intriguing...watching how she handles things and eventually comes into her own. Plus I loved all the wonderful characters she met along the way. Particularly I liked the old Herald musician, Jadus and the roguish Herald in training, Skif.
This was a wonderful tale and yes, it will be added to my shelf of books to read again. :) I look forward to diving into Arrow's Flight next! Yay!
Didn't Think I Would Like It.......2007-05-07
Just getting into Mercedes Lackey books. I'm a fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley, though not so much her Darkover novels. I prefer Patricia Kennealy Morrison's Keltaid Novels. But I have to admit, this series, this trilogy at least, had me caught up in it. I will be continuing the series.
Great Read.......2007-03-16
I decided that after reading 'The Last Herald Mage' trilogy (which is bloody brilliant), that i would read another Mercedes Lackey trilogy. Slightly easier to get into and more predictable than the prevous trilogy, but no less rewarding to read. This would be a good trilogy for anyone wanting to begin reading Mercedes Lackey.
Audio Book Disappointment.......2007-03-04
I give the original book a 5 star rating, this audio book however was a major disappointment. On average I listen to 10-15 hours worth of audio books per week and was really excited to see one of my favorite books finally available in audio format. What a major let down it turned out to be. A good audio book is performed, Carol Edie Smith mostly just reads this book. While she has very good diction (used to stage performances perhaps?) her reading of this book is almost a distraction - odd pauses and stressess on the weak portions of the text at the expense of the really significant moments really detract from Mercedes Lackey's prose. Ms. Smith is only capable of either speaking in her own voice or her voice with a Irish accent. At times it was difficult to know which character was speaking due to her inability to differentiate voices. Don't buy this , read the book instead.....
VERY GOOD.......2007-01-11
THE AUDIBOOK WAS VERY GOOD, AN IT STAYED WITH THE STORY AS WAS IN THE BOOK. BUT , FOR THE AMOUNT THAT I PAID FOR THE AUDIOBOOK, I THINK IT COULD HAVE COME IN A MUCH BETTER JACKET. I PAID LESS FOR CHRISTINA FEEHAN,S AUDIOBOOKS, AN THEY CAME IN A VERY NICE JACKET. AN I KNOW THAT MERCEDES LACKEY , IS AS GOOD OF AN AUTHOR AS CHRISTINA FEEHAN. ALL IN ALL. THE AUDIOBOOK IS VERY GOOD. I WILL ALSO GET ALL OF MERCEDES LACKEYS BOOK AS THAY COME OUT ON DISK.
THANK YOU

A cyanide-laced canape -- and the death of the PTA president who devoured it -- had quite upset the spring luncheon of the affluent suburban Connecticut PTA, when a second PTA member dropped dead from a poisoned packet of artifical sweetener. Now Susan Henshaw, vice-president of the PTA, leads an investigation into an organization riddled with scandal, sex and drugs . . .

Small Town Cozy Début.......2006-07-22
In the 1st book in the Susan Henshaw Mystery series, we are introduced to the members of the local Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in the affluent town of Hancock, Connecticut. Serving on the committee each year, the wealthy suburban mothers raise money for their children's educations, and help to ensure that the quality of the education stays exceptional. When two members of the local PTA drop dead a couple of months apart, Susan Henshaw, the PTA vice-president, is approached by two state detectives to aid in their investigation. Susan is surprised by their interest in her, until she figures out that she tops the list of suspects in the case. Giving background information on her friends and fellow PTA members isn't that difficult for Susan, but she struggles with having to give up some of the "juicier" bits of gossip from the tight knit group. As the police begin to investigate, they learn that everyone has a secret in this seemingly perfect community, and they must work quickly to discover a murderer before the list of victims grows again.
I enjoy domestic cozies, and was excited to find a new series to try in the genre. I liked the book enough to read more in the series, but was a little disappointed that the majority of the book focused on the police investigation, and the questioning of suspects. There was a lot of focus on the police, and I would have liked to learn more about the life of the main character, Susan Henshaw. However, there is a lot of promise to this long-running series, and I enjoyed the interesting characters and their relationships in this setting.
If you enjoy domestic cozies such as the Jane Jeffry series by Jill Churchill or the Lucy Stone series by Leslie Meier, give this series a try.
The next book in the series is called "Fortieth Birthday Body". Enjoy!
Introduction to the Susan Henshaw Mystery Series.......2002-08-09
Susan Henshaw is just as puzzled as the police are when two of her co-workers on the school PTA are poisoned within a short time. She works with a police investigator who thinks that her powers of observation and deduction will be a help to him. As Susan and the police delve into the lives of the PTA families in their wealthy Connecticut neighborhood, they uncover possibilities of adultery and drug abuse. It isn't until the end that they put together the clues and finally come up with the murderer. The motive is pretty thin, but still this book is a fun read and is the beginning of a long-running series.
The real skinny on the PTA.......2001-09-20
In this, the first of the Susan Henshaw novels, Valerie Wolzien introduces the reader to a clever, quick-thinking suburban housewife. That may not sound like a winner, but IT IS! Susan is a fantastic character, with depth and real emotions, combined with a talent for detection. She isn't snooty at all, and anyone could relate to her and her family. Wolzien's book is smart, funny, easy to read and a great look into the PTA --where petty jealousies and murder lurk. A must read! Note: the books can be read out of sequence, but starting with #1 is best!
An Excellent Start to a Favorite Series.......2001-05-27
I have read several of the books in this series and wonder how I could have missed this one. Susan Henshaw is a suburban housewife heavily involved in the local PTA. At the annual PTA luncheon, one of the committee members dies after eating a sandwich laced with cyanide. Several weeks later, another committee member is also killed with cyanide, this time in a beverage. Susan is nearby in both instances. The CT State Police are called in to assist the locals and they enlist her help in solving the murder. You never know what lurks beneath the surface of the upscale suburban community.
This is a wonderful start to the series. No one is what they seem, and everyone appears to have a secret. Athough in retrospect, the author gives clues, the murderer came as a surprise to me. Great Book!!!!
Meet the super-sleuths of Hancock, Connecticut:).......2000-10-20
OK, I admit it. I read "We Wish You a Merry Murder" first. This was the third of the Susan and Kathleen books I read. Loved "Merry Murder" and pretty much hated "40th Birthday Body." This one, however, is a keeper. Both the cops and the suburban housewife who helps them solve the murders here confront their prejudices about the way the "other half" lives, be that rich vs. poor, or married vs. single. Susan is not just another frivolous dilettante wealthy stay-at-home mom. She's a good friend with great sensitivity. This one doesn't have the laugh-out-loud funny moments of "Merry Murder," but it's good nonetheless. Like the other reviewer, I was VERY disappointed in the "Menu for Murder" TV movie based on this book. They butchered it. All of Valerie Wolzien's books would make good Sunday night TV movies or Lifetime TV fare--but only if they stick to the book more faithfully. I love these characters, and what you see here is just the start of a fun series with people you don't mind visiting again. After this one, just skip "40th Birthday Body" and take the rest of the books in order, and things will unfold without missing a beat.

The real Turtles.......2007-01-01
I grew up loving the old cartoon, but as I grew, I found myself not liking it anymore. Then someone told me to get my hands on the original books. I am so thankful to him that I did. This was a great read. Adult, with a little humor thrown in. A must for any turtle fan. And here's hoping the new movie reflects these stories.
Customer Reviews:
Ok I guess.......2001-04-30
This movie was OK, I guess. I was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze. I watched it a lot of times. It was not that realistic. I mean, who believes there could really be Ninja Turtles. But overall I think it was enjoyable. It has some new characters: Toka and Razar. The price here is cheap, and I think kids would like this movie. So why don't you take my advice. Buy this movie if you liked Ninja Turtles 1 (or if you saw it) because the turtles look more real here too.

The best home herbal I've found so far.......2007-04-25
David Hoffman's "The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal" is one of those rare books I keep nearby, as I'm constantly referring to it. Developed for the layman, Holistic Herbal provides sufficient overview of various herbal remedies to allow one to get their feet wet and feel competent while doing so. Part 1 of the book is a mere 16-page overview of the holistic concept - short, but if you weren't already sold on it, you wouldn't be reading the book, would you? Part 2 covers the practical aspects of herbalism, including the collection and preparation of the various herbs. This is one the areas where the work shines through, as Hoffman's descriptions and photographic accompaniments clearly and succinctly illustrate the process of making not only infusions, tinctures and decoctions, but also capsules, lozenges and suppositories. The latter part of this section also familiarizes the reader with the technical terms associated with herbalism, from abortifacients to vulneraries, in clear layman's terms. Part 3 begins the herbal itself, and its clearly expounded sections will have you referring back to it often. Each page has one to two herbs, with a photograph of the herb in question, a description of the parts used and their preparation, dosages and possible combinations with other herbs for varied therapeutic effects. Seemingly in recognition that this information could overwhelm the layman, Hoffman outlines on page 49 a home herbal medicine chest, with around 30 basic herbs as well as the (minor) equipment one will need in order to make use of them. The therapeutic index which lists the various ailments and their herbal remedies also emphasizes several herbal remedies within each category that are particularly efficacious for the ailment in question.
PERFECT!.......2006-05-22
What a SUPERB release. This is my medicinal herbal bible; it's quite complete, very nice graphics, and is easy to understand. It sits right next to my magickal herb books and has been an invaluable reference. HIGHLY recommended.

One of the Best.......2003-09-24
I own a later 2002 version of the 1996 book. Except for cover design the content has remained very much the same. That is one of the best available books on herbs and herbology. It shows the herb with a color photograph for those unfamiliar with what each herb looks like. It gives a detailed description of the herb amd exact formulas of how to use it singularly or in combination. There are other features like how to cultivate and dry the herbs and how it relates to a body system. One of the Best herb books available
Well organized information, great pictures.......2003-02-17
The pictures and profiles on the herbs are a pleasure to read and look at. I would have given the book 5 stars, but there is a dearth of safety information for some herbs (e.g. comfrey, coltsfoot, lily of the valley, sassafras)which I feel is a serious omission. Someone just starting to learn about herbs may start consuming them on a regular basis before coming across the safety information elsewhere. Also, in the section on body systems, the recommended herbal recipes are accompanied by symbols which are not explained anywhere in the text (or if they are, the explanation is very well hidden because I can't find it!) Other than that, the book contains a great introduction to how the body's various systems work and also a lot of common sense advice on optimizing health (not just illness prevention). The philosophy of herbal treatment (treating the whole person as opposed to treating a symptom or a disease) is nicely discussed. Also the therapeutic index makes it easy to find herbs that you can try for specific health needs. A nice addition to the herbal library as long as you have other books that offer the safety info that this one lacks!
a useful introduction and reference to herbal medicine.......1999-03-27
This work offers a satisfying introduction to herbalism for the general reader, and is enhanced by useful sections on medical terminology, when to gather herbs, useful addresses, and further reading. Medical practicioners will probably find that the book contains insufficient detail and inadequate references to other literature and experimental data.
The most useful part of this book - and the one offering the clearest exposition of the author's philosphy - is the 4th chapter entitled "Systems of the Body". This is the chapter that a reader with a specific complaint should turn to first. This includes sections on eleven bodily systems, including: the circulatory system; the lymphatic system; the respiratory system; ears, nose, throat and eyes; the reproductive system; and the digestive system.
Taking the digestive system to illustrate the author's approach, the whole section consists of 14 large pages. In the first two pages, the author explains with the help of illustrations the anatomy and function of the digestive system, and then gives general lifestyle advice on prevention of digestive disease. The next two pages are an introduction to the various kinds of herbs for the digestive system, among them bitters, hepatics, laxatives, emetics, demulcants, astringents and anti-spasmodics. The final 10-page subsection is titled "Patterns of Digestive Disease", in which Hoffmann offers his views on the nature of, and possible treatments for, problems as diverse as constipation, anorexia nervosa, mouth ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and gall-bladder inflammation. The herbs mentioned in this chapter can then be looked up in the preceding chapter, a traditional herbal which devotes half a page to each herb, mentioning the parts used; how and when to collect it; its chemical constituents; its actions; and preparation and dosage. I find half a page far too little, but combining this with the information in the rest of the book, the reader will usually find enough to suggest a possible remedy for common complaints - one that will usually require verification by a qualified practicioner.
The rest of the book includes chapters on "the holistic approach" and "practical herbalism". The latter explains how to gather herbs and make herbal preparations; the chemistry of herbs; the action of herbs; suggestions for a basic herbal medicine chest for the home; and a therapeutic index, which gives an alphabetical list of conditions with most of the potentially useful herbs.
