4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Catch to Read.......2007-09-09

It's 1765 and Boston is in an uproar at taxation without representation. Tavern owner Makepeace Burke "catches" an English lord drowning in the harbor and brings him to her home to care for his injuries. Sparks start flying between Makepeace and Sir Phillip Dapifer as she tries to find a way to get him back to the English without the locals finding out she's harboring the "enemy". I really enjoyed the tension between these two, along with their very dry but highly amusing banter.

The story is told in three parts. The first part tells the tale of the "catch" of Sir Phillip, their flight from Boston and the voyage to England. The second part has Makepeace trying to fit into London society and the battles with Pip's witchy ex-wife. Eventually tragedy strikes and Makepeace is forced to start another life for herself and her family, but she is bent on revenge for those who wronged her. I see some other reviewers didn't care for the third part, but as another reviewer noted it is very similar to the revenge minded Count of Monte Cristo. And, as in that book Makepeace does finally realize that there is more to life and family than her single minded plans for revenge.

All in all a very entertaining and engaging read, and one I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed the glimpses of life along the Boston harbor, Georgian England and the coal mines of Northumberland. I found all the characters to be well defined, even the secondary ones. While it's not the greatest piece of historical fiction I've read, it's still worth taking the time to check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a good read..........2007-04-21

A Catch of Consequence was a really good read. Set at the beginning in pre-revolutionary Boston and then for the remainder of the novel in England, it is a great historical novel. I particularly enjoyed the characters, especially Makepeace Burke, our heroine. She has fiery red hair and a temper to match, not to mention a drive to see things happen. When she finds a man drowning, she has to save him, and the rest of the story is the outfall of that one decision. Not only is the man she rescues a British peer, but he was being drowned by the rebels in Boston who frequented Makepeace's tavern.

In true romantic fashion, Makepeace and the man she rescued, Sir Phillip Dapifer, fall in love, and despite the difference in social standing, get married. They don't, however, live happily ever after. Sir Phillip's first-wife, who he divorced because she committed adultery with his best friend, makes sure that life for them is miserable, eventually leading to the death of Sir Phillip. It is this point that the story focuses on Makepeace and what she has to do to heal herself and move on with her life.

As I said, I really liked this book. I thought that there were interesting changes in character for Makepeace, while keeping the thread of who she truly is. I honestly didn't understand why she fell in love with Sir Phillip. He seemed a rather flat character who didn't have the passion to deserve her. The plot is focused and mostly all of the characters were delightful or served a purpose for the novel.

A few things I did not like about the book centered on the writing. I found myself a little stunned by the abrupt transitions between paragraphs. I sometimes didn't understand that I was reading about another character until I was a few paragraphs into the change. This was disorienting and troublesome for me as I'm not a quick reader and don't gloss over sentences or paragraphs. I also found some of the dialect extremely difficult to understand, impossible in some instances.

Those concerns were little, though. A Catch of Consequence is a delightful book that I enjoyed reading from the first page until the last. I'm looking forward to my next Diana Norman book.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-03-02

While I cannot say that I hated this book overall, I certainly did not like it as well as I thought I would. If you are looking for a historical romance novel with a happy ending, this is probably not your cup of tea. It's actually kind of a depressing story.
Also, the writing was difficult to follow at times. At various points throughout the book, without any indication, the author jumps to another conversation or goings-on. The reader has to stop a minute and try to figure out who is now talking and the setting of the new scene.
Finally, while I am a rather well-read person with an interest in learning new words, this book just got annoying. The use of obscure words several times per page--while perhaps appropriate for era--distracts the reader, not allowing them to fully grasp the meaning of what the writer is trying to convey.
Overall, while I was captivate by the first third of the book and still interested the second third, this book is certainly not one I will read again.

5 out of 5 stars A good catch indeed, a bit like an English, girls version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" .......2006-07-30

I first started this book with little knowledge of the plot. I knew the basics, a puritan fished a noble out of the water and then there's marriage and all that good stuff. That would be a good premise for a novel, right? Well. Unfortunately, that's the premise for the first third of this novel. Really this is a bit like an English, girls version of "The Count of Monte Cristo".

Makepeace Burke does marry the noble she fished out of the Boston harbor, and she does head to England with him, causing a clash of class and culture. But her husband, Phillip, came to America in the first place to get a divorce from his cheating wife (which in England would have required an act of parliament) and his first wife isn't so eager to just make way for the new one...sparking the conflict that leads this book.

Revenge, class, suitability and the ability to be a good person no matter what life deals you is what this book is about. It is funny, charming, heartbreaking, romantic and very, very good. If you like historical fiction you'll like this book.

1 out of 5 stars No "catch" - throw it back! .......2006-06-26

There are three parts/sections to this novel: Part 1 was ok-fairly interesting, seemingly intriguing storyline and developed characters; Part 2 was even better- a move to London and a chance to explore Imperialism, class struggles, romance, etc.; however, Part 3 was just AWFUL! The novel completely fell apart in its final section - not even worth reading and unfortunately ruined anything else I could possibly praise from the beginning third of the novel. Skip this one!

This killer is so evil, he wears the most deceptive face of all….

      Legacy of Masks

Ex-prosecutor Mary Crow didn’t expect a hero’s welcome when she returned home to Pisgah County, North Carolina. But what she did expect was the job she’d been promised in the D.A.’s office. Instead she found she’d worn out her welcome before she even arrived–and that she has more than a few enemies among the supporters of the corrupt sheriff she’d caught sidelining in murder years before.

The new sheriff was one of Mary’s childhood schoolmates, timid and nerdy Jerry Cochran. Only Cochran is neither nerdy nor timid anymore. And when a young girl is found brutally murdered and everyone, including the girl’s parents and the police, is sure the killer is a young, mystical Ani Zaguhi Cherokee named Ridge Standingdeer, Mary’s first case in her own law firm slams her into the heart of a controversy. As a prosecutor, Mary was used to tenaciously tracking down the guilty. Now she finds herself on the other side of the law, defending a client she’s sure is innocent against a merciless system, a bigoted town…and an even more ruthless killer. With her old lover Jonathan Walkingstick, Mary will have to go where she’s never gone before–a place where a psychopath with the perfect mask and a shocking secret is waiting to add Mary herself to his growing collection of silent victims.

5 out of 5 stars Dig into 'Legacy of Masks' .......2005-06-03

Nashville City Paper BookClub Column June 2, 2005

      Saralee says

Did you know that one of Nashville's own, author Sallie Bissell, has been nominated for a national Shamus Award by the Private Eye Writers of America for the best paperback original of 2004? Call the Devil by His Oldest Name and her other detective novels featuring Mary Crow are some of the hottest books selling today.

If you have not discovered this wonderful series, then run to your nearest bookstore or library and start reading them right now. I just love mysteries that feature characters like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch and Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins. I am happy to say there are now four books about Crow, the feisty lawyer who finds herself not only prosecuting criminals in Atlanta but also solving murder mysteries in North Carolina.

Bissell's previous books are In the Forest of Harm (Bantam), A Darker Justice, and the Shamus Award nominated Call the Devil by His Oldest Name (Dell).

Legacy of Masks sends Crow back to her home of Pisgah County in North Carolina and to her former love interest Jonathan Walkingstick. Crow wants to move back home and work for the local prosecutor. However, Crow has been so successful in the big city of Atlanta and in various parts of Appalachia that she intimidates the locals, and no one will hire her. As a result, she hangs up her own shingle and soon finds herself on the other side of the law as a defense attorney rather than a prosecutor. Ridge Standingdeer, an Ani Zaguhi Cherokee, is arrested for a horrific murder. Crow believes in Standingdeer's innocence but has her hands full dealing with his mysticism and the facts of the law. Someone has been on a killing spree for sometime, and all of the victims are young girls.

For such a rural area, Pisgah County has its share of strange characters. Deke Keener is a developer. Keener tricks families into moving to North Carolina to work for him so that he can get girls to play on his "special" girls softball team. Then there is Jerry Cochran, the new sheriff. Crow and Cochran were high school classmates, and they have to get used to each other in their new roles.

The most interesting characters in Legacy of Masks are Kayla Daws and Avis Martin. These two girls do things that no mother wants her daughters to do in order to catch a child molester. Legacy of Masks is a page-turner sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and impossible to put down.

      Larry's language

Mystery books come in many different disguises. Some are crime novels that feature violence and craziness such as Elmore Leonard's The Hot Kid (HarperCollins). Some are whodunits that are puzzles to solve like Nevada Barr's Hard Truth (Penguin Group). Then there are character studies that reveal the sinners among us like Mary Higgins Clark's No Place Like Home (Simon & Schuster). Still others are historical novels that show how little people's inhumanity has changed such as One Corpse Too Many (Warner) by Ellis Peters. Bissell's Legacy of Masks combines the best features of good mysteries with its violent plot twists, intriguing characters and problems for our heroine, former district attorney Crow, to solve.

The basic story in this novel about the harms to young girls is elegant, simple and deadly. Crow is attempting to come home again to Pisgah County, North Carolina, with its memories of family strife, unrequited love and old friends who now seem distant to her. Crow is an admirable and successful attorney - except for that time in a previous novel when she had to kill the sheriff. Crow is a fighter and a survivor. She has killed before and is even tougher now. What Crow really wants is to re-establish her personal relationship with Walkingstick but like all true love, things are complicated.

The complexity deepens when Crow opens her own legal practice and is retained by the county's most prominent real estate developer who is easily one of the most degenerate bad guys in recent books.

She is a crime solver that we want to read more about because of her can-do attitude as she confronts and unravels her love life problems and local prejudices while solving a few murders along the way. Add the beauty and savagery of the western Carolina mountains as a setting and Bissell ranks up there with the best: Robert Parker, John Sanford, Jeffrey Deaver, Patricia Cornwell and Jan Burke.

      4 out of 5 stars Cherokee mysticism.......2005-05-07

High powered ADA Mary Crowe returns to her home town in North Carolina, hoping to rekindle her romance with old love Jonathan Walkingstick, part Cherokee and total hunk, who is now a widower with a small child. As Mary is half Cherokee herself, old prejudices re emerge and when she sets up a law office in the town, the only offer of work comes from an old classmate, Deke Keener who is now the wealthiest man in town. Unknown to everyone, except his victims, Keener is a pedophile who preys upon the prepubescent daughters of his employees. He ensures the silence of these little girls by threatening to dismiss their fathers, leaving them homeless. Deke drives one girl, Bethany, over the edge by threatening to molest her younger sister, Kayla, as she herself has matured too much to suit his warped needs. Bethany's boyfriend, Ridge Standingdeer, a young Cherokee who is a member of a mystical section of the tribe called Ani Zaguhi, has hidden tapes made by Bethany as she was being molested, and when Bethany is brutally murdered,Deke encourages the police to arrest Ridge, calling him a witch and inciting the locals to villify him, using racial prejudice to urge them on. Mary agrees to act as defence lawyer for Ridge and with the unsought help of Kayla and Avis who is about to become Deke's next victim, works to unmask him and to reveal him as an unspeakable criminal. Although pedophilia and racial abuse are not pleasant subjects, Sallie Bissell writes a very readable story and I feel that more to come, featuring Mary Crowe in her new role as a defence attorney.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the last one.......2005-04-05

This book is a bit of a let down. The main problem I have with it is that there are pages and pages of absolutely nothing happening. This book could have been shortened by about 80 pages. Mary Crow is an interesting character, but really doesn't do anything until the last 40 pages of the book. Her relationship with Jonathan is nothing more than an afterthought. The most interesting characters in the story are the two little girls who figure out what's going on before anyone else does, and they began to annoy me after awhile. Had high hopes for this one, but it just didn't cut it.

4 out of 5 stars fine Mary Crow who-done-it .......2005-03-30

Mary Crow has returned to Hartsville before (see IN THE FOREST OF HARM), but this time she is serious about staying. She broke with her anthropologist boyfriend Gabe while they were in Peru and quit her job as an ADA to seek work as a prosecutor or in a law firm in the North Carolina Mountains. No offer has come as no one believes that "Killer Crow" will remain here after seventeen years in Atlanta; so she opens up her own office.

Her first major case will not endear Mary with the bigwigs. The police suspect Ridge Standingdeer killed his girlfriend Bethany Daws. Mary believes her client is innocent, but her only help comes from two preadolescents including Kayla the sister of the victim. Meanwhile sexual predator Deke Keener, the wealthiest person in the country with major political ties due to his construction company, targets Kayla as his next squeeze, but needs to keep Mary occupied perhaps with some of his legal business.

The fourth Mary Crow tale returns her to her hometown where with exception of Kayla and hunk Jonathan Walkingstick no one wants her to stay. Her efforts to obtain work are met with resistance because of her stellar reputation making her seem over-skilled and the fact that she did kill the corrupt sheriff on a previous visit; even the native tribe rejects her offer of council. The who-done-it is not quite as thrilling as Crow's previous efforts, but the audience will appreciate her cat and mouse game with this clever predator who uses money, contacts, and racism to hide his being a killing pedophile.

          Product Description

This collection is dedicated to a distinguished scholar and writer who for a quarter of a century wrote consistently on African literature and the arts and was a major voice in Nigerian literary circles. Ezenwa-Ohaeto made a mark in contemporary Nigerian poetry by committing pidgin to written form and, by so doing, introducing different creative patterns. He also saw himself as a 'minstrel', as someone who wanted to read, express and enact his work before an audience. First and foremost, however, Ezenwa-Ohaeto was someone who 'un-masked' ideas and meanings hidden in the folds of literary works and made them available to an international academic public. With his outstanding work on Chinua Achebe, he influenced the reception of African literary biography. His networks and connections were extensive and wide-ranging, and they are partly reflected in the essays, creative writing and personal notes assembled in this volume. In their various modes and expressions, the contributions included here constitute a tribute to Ezenwa Ohaeto's many talents and achievements. As an extension of Ezenwa Ohaeto's legacy, they expand on various aspects of minstrelsy and the un/masking of texts in a Nigerian and broader African context. The book is divided into six sections. "In Memoriam" contains personal tributes by long-standing colleagues, mentors and friends. "Poetry and Fiction" collects the voices of three generations of Nigerian writing from the 1960s to the present day, followed by poetic and pictorial insights into the domestic and social life of the scholar and family man. Section Four comprises two interviews, while Sections Five and Six are devoted to critical evaluations of Ezenwa Ohaeto's work and to contemporary perspectives on Nigerian literature respectively. 5 out of 5 stars All athletes should read it.......2003-12-29

This book takes a scienteific approach in explaining how muscles work and more importantly, how workouts/trainings can be improved by providing the necessary nutrition at the right times. The recommended nutritional supplements almost totally eliminated the after-workout muscle pain. Not considering the information that the book offers, workouts/training can be a waste of both time and energy.
In addition to the basic idea of how to treat our muscles, the book can also serve as a reference as it gives detailed explanation about several minerals and vitamins.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2003-12-28

I thought that this was an interesting and informative book, but a large portion of it seems to be an advertisement for Accelerade and Endurox R4 sports drinks.

5 out of 5 stars Sound research; easy to read.......2003-03-26

This is a well written book that is useful regardless of your sport or fitness interest. The author distills the latest research and clearly explains how to manage your nutrition for optimal muscle recovery. The book also gives clear explanations of such procedures as carbohydrate loading, and explains a variety of metabolic issues. It is incredibly useful, and a must for any athlete or fitness enthusiast! I found it impossible to put down.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on training I own..........2002-05-24

...and I own ALOT of books on training. I got this book specifically for muscle recovery after running, but it turned out to be alot more. Nutrition for training, helping you understand how the physiology works during & after exercise, what EXACTLY to do during & after for optimal fueling & recovery. I hike, run, mountain bike, and I'm starting adventure racing. The information in this book has helped ALL my activities, and I highly recommend it. I thought I was going to get a "1+2=3" type of formula for muscle recovery and that's it...but the book actually provides much more. I'm buying it for my adventure racing team members.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for us schmo's who want to be competitive racers.......2001-12-05

This book is a must for any competitive athlete serious about excelling in his/her sport. I'm a novice mountain bike racer who just fumbled his way through his first race season, and for those of us who aren't sponsored and don't have coaches, this book is invaluable. I think as I build experience, this knowledge will help me be competitive against guys with years of experience.

The author is able to relay the scientific aspect of the body's functions during and after exercise to the lay person without making the reader feel lost. The book opened topics that I was familiar with but not terribly knowledgeable about. I now have a much better understanding about how my body uses what I put into it, and how this affects my performance. I'm also able to better plan my training/racing schedule because I know how to properly recover and prepare for the next ride.

If you want to compete, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Train well with weights.......2005-07-14

Two quotes every athlete hears from nineth grade till the last day of collage:
"Coach says we need to focus"
"Coach says to lift in the off season"
That second recomenation- to lift weights- seems present in just about every sport. Why is this? Not because weight lifting is fun, but because it conditions the tendons, strenghens the muscles, and soldifies ones' balance to such a degee that many people get results even if they are doing it "wrong". An added bonus is that skeletal muscle, like cardiac muscle, is the stimulator to burn fat. Anerobics is now as highly recommended as aerobics!
Unfortunately we don't all have "bodybuilder" friends or the money to hire a personal trainer. Therefore, I was very pleased to find this book/DVD set. The DVD shows proper form for the most common lifts, and the book shows both the right way AND the wrong way to perform these exersizes. Bravo, Mr. Kinaken.
                I also recommend:
"Getting Stronger"--B. Pearl (beginning and advanced weight routines)
And "Fitness is Religion"--R. Kybartas (motivation and inspiration)

5 out of 5 stars A must for personal trainers.......2004-05-17

This book is a must for personal trainers. The DVD enclosed with the book goes through assessment procedures that are crucial when prescribing weight training exercises to your clients. For the novice weight trainer, it will definitely clear up any misconceptions you might have about how each weight training exercise should be performed in order to ensure efficiency and safety.

                Book Description

Now in a revised and expanded second edition, Optimal Muscle Recovery is a valuable training guide-a must-have for serious endurance athletes or anyone looking to train harder and recover faster. Author Ed Burke is one of the country's leading exercise physiologists, having worked with professional athletes such as runner Frank Shorter and Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

His recovery program, called the R4 System, is nothing short of revolutionary and has been touted as "breakthrough" research by leaders in athletics. New material includes recovery for the masters and strength athlete; the importance of sleep and nutrition in recovery; and the latest on supplements and sports drinks to aid in replenishment.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic info on muscle recovery, but don't rely on as a sole source of information.......2007-08-06

I think there's some useful information in this book if you're interested in taking performance up a notch, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. As other reviewers have stated he does go on and on about his patented R4 system, but even if you're totally sold on it by the end of the book it's not like there's an R4 exercise recovery drink sitting next to the Gatorade on the supermarket shelves.

So ignore the R4 fluff, and focus in on what he has to say about muscle recovery in a general sense. The author presents some useful information on muscle recovery, and how your body needs an appropriate mix of carbs, electrolytes, and protein to properly recover from bouts of exercise. He also discusses other forms of helping muscles recover, such as massage therapy, but not in enough detail to be worthwhile.

His main focus in on endurance exercise, so don't expect to find a ton of information if you're doing weight training.

4 out of 5 stars Recovery is Key to Athletic Performance.......2007-04-24

While it's true that parts of this book read like a commercial for the R4 System of recovery, there is plenty of material that will help an athlete learn how his or her body can recover more quickly between workouts. You can experiment with the recovery ideas presented by Burke and find which work for you and discard the ones that do not.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book..........2004-05-14

The author goes on and on about the R4 recovery system, which is patented, of course you will find R4 attached to the name of an athletic recovery drink.

I bought this book, but wish I hadn't. It's a very long (and expensive) brochure for a product that I am certain the author has some sort of financial interest in.

Nothing too useful in here, nothing brilliant at all.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds like advertising to me........2003-10-31

Maybe this book is accurate. Maybe.

I cannot find any other research studies on this topic, expect thru the "Endurox".

The author seems to think the only way to deliver his claims is thru a "sport drink" ... which he repeated so many times as to put a red flag up for me.

I did some research on the web, and found that the author has licensed the "R4" formula to the makers of the powered "Endurox". Of course, if it is in print, it must be true, right? =)

In any case, I would like to see results of a study not associated with the author or the powdered drink maker.

I am just a bit skeptical, but if it works, this may be a great thing for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of the recovery process!.......2003-09-15

Have you ever finished an exercise that you didn't think was too hard and awoke the next day to find yourself sore? Have you ever had a really hard workout and planned for at least one day of being sore only to find yourself ready to go the next day? If you want probable answers to these questions, read this book. Burke offers a great explanation of what happens to your muscles during the stress and recovery phases of exercise, and offers great advice on how recover with the most efficiency. If you're interested in finding out more about the science of recovery, this is a must read.
