Not what I expected.......2007-08-16

I had just read, A SALTY PIECE OF LAND, by Jimmy Buffett, and because I LOVED it, I rushed to buy WHERE IS JOE MERCHANT? assuming it would be as good as it. It was definitely a disappointment. It was not the escape to paradise that A SALTY PIECE OF LAND was. This was quite graphically violent and unpleasant most of the book. Yes, it had a happy ending, but overall, the book was not at all what I expected. :(

Pure escapism at its' finest.......2007-07-21

If you aren't a parrothead yet, you will be after reading this book. Lots of improbable situations and skin-of-the-teeth escapes. If you're looking for the next great novel, this ain't it. But if you're looking for a great summer read, pick this one up ASAP!

More Buffet.......2007-06-13

Buffet is always great fun to read. Very easy reading with great twisting fun plot. We all need a little Buffet in our life.

Great Vacation Read.......2007-05-12

Neither my husband nor I could put this book down. We really enjoyed reading it. The ending was a bit disappointing for my husband -- he wanted a more conclusive ending with things wrapped up; I'm more accustomed to reading "series" novels where things are "never" wrapped up .

"Where is Joe Merchant? A Novel Tale" is now in the stack with "A Salty Piece of Land" and "the Gun Seller" for rereading next winter when on vacation!

Great Read.......2006-09-24

This is the kind of book you want to read when you need to get away from life in the city. Jimmy Buffett can weave a tale and draws his characters so nicely that you feel you know them and describes places so well that I will feel like I'm experiencing deja vu should I ever see them.

another one of her best.......2007-02-27

I loved this one, the dogs, the new characters, Winer and Lamb, Rita and her psychological ponderings, the hearing dog Ruffly and her owner, and just the wealth of detail about all of them. this was a nicely constructed mystery, plenty of meaty characters, plenty of side plots, plenty of dogs to enjoy. If I were a dog, I'd beg for more like this one.

Too much fun!.......2006-11-14

This series just gets to be more and more fun. I love Holly Winter and her two beautiful Alaskan Malamutes. This book delves into the world of working dogs, more specifically hearing aid dogs. Dogs are wonderful aids for people with all kinds of disabilities. Ruffly is an adorable little mixed breed that lives with a woman who is hearing impaired, and believe me, he takes his job seriously. And we also have a murder to deal with. A murder that it seems only Holly thinks is a murder. The denouement of the murderer is also fun because we have Holly backed by her trusty Rowdy who do the unmasking. This series is definitely for dog lovers, but even those who aren't as fascinated by dogs as some of us will enjoy this warm and wonderful series.

Is this a novel or a pamphlet written by the Iams company?.......2006-01-12

Better than Bloodlines, but still not that great. Poor character development, and the fact that Conant has a tendancy to ramble make this book less than what it could have been.

I'm also getting rather irritated with the author's constant free advertising plugs for Eukanuba, Iams, and some other major brand names in the pet industry. Are we reading an novel, or an informational brochure by Iams? Is she getting paid to do this, or does she really believe that Eukanuba is the best dog food on the market? (If she does, she's very ignorant on the subject of dog foods.) I don't like my novels to tell me how I should be training or what I should be feeding.

I probably will not ever purchase any books written by Conant again.

Roughly written........2005-04-23

Morris Lamb dies suddenly of what appears to be plant poisoning: his plants. When his house is sold to an Episcopalian priest and her deaf dog companion starts to have seizures, Holly Winter, dog writer and lover, starts to investigate.

I have enjoyed this series that takes place in Cambridge, Ma.
I'm definitely a dog person and these are definitely dog lovers books, filled with all kinds of tips and tidbits on dog companions.

I was extremely disappointed in this one, however. The writing is choppy. The characters that haven't already been introduced in previous books are underdeveloped. Conant often seems to babble. I didn't really understand how her opening statements about aliens and ufo's had anything to do with dogs.

The Dog Lover's Mysteries have been a favorite of mine so I'm going to give it another chance and read the next one, but I wish someone had told me earlier not to waste my time on this one.

Impressed!.......2005-04-14

I was really impressed. This was my first mystery by Susan Conant and I think I'm hooked. The only problem I see with her subject is that she's limiting her fan base. If I wasn't was what Holly Winters so aptly put it, a "dogaholic" (trainer, groomer, smoocher, dog show groupie, etc.) I wouldn't have understood a lot of the book. But since I am......these are just wonderful and I hope she keeps writing for a long time. The story had a good amount of important information concerning assistance dogs, but it also had a great story line that kept your attention. She slips many other things in her story too; animal health tips, training tips, showing tips. I learned several things I've never even heard of. I know now that there are two types of Mals, what CHD probability means and many more. I stopped a couple times while reading and did quick searches on Google to keep me up to date. I even bought a rare book by Bernie Brown. Leah would be proud of me. Thank you Ms. Conant, my compliments to the chef.

Simple, Real, and Easy to Follow.......2007-09-12

Pema Chodron is one of the most real and down to earth practicing Buddhist teachers I have come across to date. She brings forth the great wisdom from her own two marriages, children and personal life lessons. She has been a great source of comfort to me during my own difficult times in life and really helped me practice Buddhism in a way that has helped me understand my higher calling and why I am here. I highly recommend this book and all of her books.

Guidance without hyperbole.......2007-06-27

I have always read and re-read the works of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche,deeply appreciating his ability to cut through life's muddled battles. Pema Chodron is easily as gifted a writer as Rinpoche, her teacher.
This book is plain, direct, humble and real. She never offers "solutions" but instead gently guides you to look in places you pass by every day. I've had a crazy year, and reading this book got me back to the place we always are: now.
After reading this, I realized, with a laugh, that I'm already Buddhist and I might as well accept it and get some meditation instruction.

Pema Chodron is, without a doubt, an inspirational phenom. She brings the concepts of Buddhism in a down to earth compassionate manner. Before becoming a Buddhist Nun, born in the U.S., she spent early adulthood, as wife and mother, in the southwest. As an American her teachings offer a bridge and insight connecting western culture and Buddhist concepts that just make sense. This book as well as her other publications have helped to provide a spiritual centering and peace, whether in daily life or as a concerned citizen in a very troubled nation and world. A zen man for 40 years, I often find Tibetan Buddhism mired in three-of-this and eight-of-that. But this book is an exception. Chodron packs a wallop that's more powerful, penetrating, profound, and personal than I've dared stand up to in a decade. You needn't accept Buddhism, foreswear Christianity, or even the NEW YORK TIMES. She simply points to a world of sanity that underlies "all the above." My daughter found this book listed in the newspaper around the time of the 9/11 anniversary this year (2003). Her husband, my son-in-law, suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), and my daughter was coming apart at the seams. The book has given her strength, answered questions and gave her tools to cope. She says it has totally transformed her thinking. I ordered a copy for myself and cannot wait to read it. I hope it helps others who are facing a tough time. Thanks to Mike Macintosh for his helpful book, and thanks for helping so many people.

If you have ever gone through a personal tragedy & you're asking "why me, what did I do to deserve this, or am I being punished for being a bad person", I definitely recommend reading this book. When going through a trial, have you ever questioned your religious beliefs or wondered if you're the only one feeling this way, Mr. Wiersbe definitely wrote this book for you. It has given me a spiritual uplifting when I really needed it. I'm a Christian & I know God loves me, but sometimes life hands us things we just can't handle, and we really do question our faith. Read this for some "food for thought".
