Book Description

Truddi Chase began therapy to discover why she suffered from blackouts. What surfaced was terrifying: she was inhabited by 'the Troops'-92 individual personalities. This groundbreaking true story is made all the more extraordinary in that it was written by the Troops themselves. What they reveal is a spellbinding descent into a personal hell-and an ultimate deliverance for the woman they became.

I really enjoyed how this book was written by a lot of her personalities/Troops.

5 out of 5 stars Clara D. (its my english paper *gasp*).......2006-12-13

As a young girl, Truddi Chase suffered horrors that only some can bear to even dream about. All her life, she remembered the horrors, and she was seemingly strangled by them. Her only escape was her mind, and she locked herself away in it. Years went by and slowly she created ninety-two different personalities, all with their own names and even features. Now, in the book When Rabbit Howls, she finally expresses the life of an abused child who suffered from something far beyond a mental illness.

This book was far, far beyond nice. It was beautifully written and was so powerful that you couldn't help but be drawn to certain characters and memories. While reading many books, people look to be drawn completely into the story. However, in When Rabbit Howls you need to rely on your mind to help you get through some of the more complex memories. This was a book that made you use your mind, not just solve out every problem for you. For instance, in chapter 17, page 173, she begins to describe her new memories as such, "Into the woman's half-awake mind fell an image of cylindrical rough stone walls and a quavering reflection in the water below. A sense of movement gripped her; she became dizzy. Long, thin, living shapes rushed at a downward angle past the periphery of her half awake mind.

Except that there wasn't one snake, there were many and they weren't on the bed now. They rained down on the tiny creature hanging in the well, the child who swayed back and forth in some contraption made by man, that only the devil himself could have contrived." This was, to me, one of the more complex memories and I pondered over it until, finally, after reading over more of the book, they explained it.

One of the parts I especially enjoyed about it was how, while reading it, and then explaining When Rabbit Howls to my friends and family, the idea of her mind is so surreal, almost impossible to believe, that I almost felt as though I was speaking of a fiction book. Each personality is so wonderfully formed and is so complete that some of the ones who have `died' in her mind due to especially traumatizing events give you an odd feeling of depression that made me feel like crying or running to some safe corner of my room. Another part that I enjoyed was the perfect feeling of frustration and helplessness that Truddi Chase depicts in her writing. In chapter 22, the last sentence is "...and sanity seemed a very fragile thing." This shows how her world is finally beginning it make sense and, while that is happening, it is also falling apart.

One of the parts I considered most frustrating about the book was the ending. I shall not reveal the specific part that frustrated me so but I must say that it was not an angry frustration but that of feeling incapable to fully grasp a subject clearly beyond your reach. No matter how much I consider it, the idea of Truddi Chase's mind is something I will never quite be able to comprehend. Like many, I'm sure, who have read this book I find it such a hard idea to hear or visualize and that really is quite frustrating for those of us who are used to books spelling out the answer for us. If you enjoy books like that, I can assure you that this is not the right one for you. An intellect is required during and after you read the book to at least partly process the information secretly given to you during the course of When Rabbit Howls. Reading this book for pure fun and no learning will get you no where, you must approach it with an intent to learn and think and, most defiantly, be confused beyond belief.

3 out of 5 stars Great book - can be triggering/disturbing though.......2006-07-30

Read this as a teenager after my mother read it. The book was amazing, I couldn't seem to put it down. It was incredible what this woman went through. However, if you are a survivor of abuse it can be triggering at times and disturbing for anyone. The abuse is discribed explicitly in some cases and with such details you can tend to hold onto it and internalize the childs pain. Be careful - otherwise it was a great read.

5 out of 5 stars I have a love-hate relationship with this book........2006-05-02

I am a multiple, but not of the sort Truddi Chase is. It's important to remember that each multiple is different, and each multiple's experience is different. In that way, I find the idea that this is an "insight into the world of MPD" to be laughable.

I am of the view that one can be multiple, and one can be disordered; the two are very different things. However, if you are multiple, and have been disordered, you might well end up like this.

Nonetheless, I found it a fascinating read - and just incidentally, a direct documentation of the sorts of sickening abuse that many children are subject to.

In that light, I find the infestation of "denial" reviews to be fascinating. Consider the fact that "they" do not want you to read this book to be it's own perverse recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Interestingly disturbing.......2006-04-20

This is not a book a would normally be drawn to. It was passed along to me as an interesting read. And that it is, for I imagine there is no other story like it.

The book captures the nature of the multiple personalities of a woman who was subject to incest since an early age. Through her journals and therapy sessions Truddi and Dr. Phillips bring this amazing story to us. Oh, and whether I believe in this condition or not, let's just say I'm skeptical.

BOOK CLUB EDITION When she was two years old, a little girl was raped by her stepfather, and for the next fourteen years she was continually abused, emotionally and physically, not only by her stepfather, but by her mother as well. As Truddi Chase would put it, the child "went to sleep" at the age of two, and in her place, arriving when they were needed, came a variety of persons, inhabiting the same body, but each with a distinct personality, and a distinct role to play in defense of the sleeping child. Because they care so deeply about the subject of child sexual abuse, the Troops let the therapy sessions be videotaped for educational purposes, and they began to write a book about themselves for publication. When Rabbit Howls is that book, and it is an amazing document.

5 out of 5 stars A review of When Rabbit Howls.......1999-12-22

When Rabbit Howls is an account of how one woman discovers she has multiple personalities."The Troops", or the group of 92 personalities, develop as a result of her step-fathers cruel and sadistic physical and sexual abuse. The Troops surface to help Truddi cope with the abuse and survive. The story involves Truddi's psychiatrist, whom the Troops call Stanley, and his experience with each Troop member. Stanley hears the unbelievable stories of Truddi's tortured childhood, and begins to understand that each Troop member is an individual with thier own personality. Stanley and Truddi must discover a way to go through everyday life with the Troops and the memories they posess. When Rabit Howls is an excellent book on multiple personalities and the severe abuse that can cause them.

5 out of 5 stars SUBJECT MULTIPLE PERSONALITY EXPLORED.......1998-12-12

I have read many books about this subject and this one is the most fascinating I have ever seen. As far as I know, this is the only autobiographal book on this terrible illness. All of the others have been written by the doctor of the patient. the hard cover copy is especially interesting because there are handwriting samples of many of the 92 personalities....yes 92! this case is also unique in that it is the only treated patient whose many personalities were not melded into one surviving personality. This account is written in horrific detail of her abuse by her father. The disorder is always caused by unbearable abuse heaped on a very young child. The formation of multiple personalities is a survival technique employed by the mind. I was very impressed by the author's ability and choice to not merge the personalities and still be able to function...hold a job..be a parent ,etc. The 92 personalities are of many ages, both male and female. They function in the many areas of Trudy' life as befits their capabilities. It has been quite a few years since I read this book but I will never forget it. Altho Trudi is not a professional writer,as far as I know, it is beautifully written. The pocketbook edition lacks the handwriting samples on the cover, which impressed me by their being totally different..The personalities had different abilities, such as driving, tastes in food and drink, smoking and allergies. The allergies being different makes you wonder about their source being phychological rather than physiological...a real mind-boggler for me. I have always suspected that that might be true. Sure could put a different spin finding cures through a different approach. The perpetrator of Trudi's abuse was still alive when this book was published and one of the most enlightening passages in this book was her account of her visiting the cause of her illness. This proved to me that her decision not to merge the personalities had not prevented her being able to function in life. It is an amazing account of tremendous courage. The first multiple personality formed was the reason for the title of this book. In other accounts I've read the multiples still existed but Trudi's first one died, as I understood it. No book I have ever read has shown how much a child can be affected by the treatment of people who are their caretakers..their parents, teachers, relatives etc who are supposed to give them love and aid them when needed. Of course I highly reccommend this book It was written by Truddi Chase..

                  Book Description

Satisfying her hunger for epicurean adventure in the French provinces, small town caterer and minister's wife Faith Fairchild decides to throw the perfect dinner party. But during cleanup after the last guest has departed her gastronomical triumph, she encounters something neither expected nor welcome: a dead body lying in her vestibule. Unfortunately it doesn't help la belle americaine's credibility when the corpse vanishes before the local gendarmes arrive. But Faith realizes that, though the police refuse to take her seriously, a killer just might. And if she doesn't get to the bottom of this fiendish French conundrum, Faith's recent successful feast could end up being her last.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2000-07-13

I enjoyed this book, and didn't figure it out until the end. Unfortunately I don't speak French, so at places I felt a little lost. She didn't always translate what was said in French (maybe it was meant to be obvious, but I couldn't keep up) so I was left feeling like I missed something. But despite that, I still enjoyed seeing what kind of problems Faith could get herself in to, and thankfully out of as well. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Good Light Read.......2000-06-25

This is a good light read that I read on vacation in about a day and a half. If you want something rich and edifying, look elsewhere. But if you want a fun romp, this series is it. This is the fourth adventure and I just bought number 5. I thought the characters were very interesting, and the south of France an interesting change of scenery. Faith gets herself into more jams than anyone I've ever known, but it's half the fun it. Relax and enjoy!

                  3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-03-05

I find the characters of Faith and her husband Tom Fairchild to be very enjoyable. They are not what you would think of as the typical minister and his wife. However, I did not think this particular mystery was as good a work as the others in the series. I kept getting certain characters in the book confused and most of the "suspects" were forgetable. I also thought the plot was a bit vague or complicated.

If you haven't read any of the Faith Fairchild books I would say start with a different one than the Body in the Vestibule but if you are a die hard fan, than the book is probably worth reading just for the delight of spending some time with the Fairchilds.

3 out of 5 stars France, Food, and Foul Play.......1997-12-12

Faith, mother of 1 4/9th's children, husband Tom, and son Ben, leave frigid Aleford, Massachussets to sojourn for a month in Lyon, France. While Tom pursues research for his dissertation, Faith relishes the chance to explore the centuries old section of the city round about their apartment, and indulge her caterer's love of gourmet food with daily trips to the open-air market and luscious meals. Unfortunately, pregnancy and the remains of a bouillabaisse prepared for that evening's dinner party conspire to introduce her to a disappearing corpse, and what had been an idyllic stay in France has now become thoroughly dangerous.

Whom to suspect... what are the motives? Do the three prostitutes know? What about the other street people? Are those teen-agers really just focused on their exam? Is there anyone on the police force who will take her seriously? What about the neighbors?

Faith finds herself moving deeper into the puzzle, receiving veiled threats, discovering clues to a second death (was it murder too?), and getting her hair done. Abductions, assaults, escapes, rescues, and the final confrontation make this an enjoyable evening's reading.

A final warning: do not read while hungry. The author is very liberal in her references to food and more than once had my stomach responding.

5 out of 5 stars To the Dalemark.......2005-05-20

Diana Wynne-Jones is best known for her wizards and humorous magic, but in the Dalemark Quartet she takes a trip into more serious fantasy, complete with warring earldoms and strange gods. "The Dalemark Quartet" compiles together the four books of this intriguing, original series.

In "Cart and Cwidder," Moril is the dreamy son of a family of wandering minstrels, performing and offering news to various towns. But a mysterious traveller joins them on their journey -- and soon Moril's father is murdered, his brother is jailed, and his sister is enmeshed in a conspiracy involving the Duke's son. Now Moril must find a way to save his family, using a magical cwidder.

"In "Drowned Ammet," the impoverished Alhammitt (called "Mitt") has become a radical of sorts, after his father and mother are tossed out because of an evil duke. Later, the Free Holanders also take his father. Mitt is determined to get revenge, but his years of planning go awry, and he ends up desperately fleeing to the North with two captives... only to encounter storms, gods, and much more.

"The Spellcoats" is the tale of Tanaqui, centuries before the first two volumes of the quartet. She lives with her family in prehistoric Dalemark, where a battle is being fought between the "Heathens" and their own folk. When her brother returns, insane, she and her family must flee their village. But Tanaqui learns of the existance of Kankredin, a malevolent wizard who is waiting for them.

In the final volume, "Crown of Dalemark," a forthright young boy named Mitt is called on to be an assassin. A countess wants him to destroy a young lady, Noreth, who may become the uniting monarch of Dalemark. But Mitt begins to like Noreth, and so joins her supporters. What he doesn't know is that she is actually Maewen, a confused young girl from 200 years in the future...

Jones is best known for a sort of wry, amusing, homey fantasy with a distinctly British flavor -- not to mention that they often have dapper wizards and strange multiverses. That sort of stuff is mostly missing in "The Dalemark Quartet." Instead, we get a darker, much more epic story -- there are godlike figures, earldoms, peasants, nobles, and plenty more.

Jones' writing is quite detailed in this book, since she not only describes the clothing, woods and people, but also the alternative world of Dalemark. Both stories are connected, but independent, and Jones carefully crafts the politics and conflicts that run under all the magic and the godlike Undying. She even travels back in time. Certainly not many authors can make an invented world that is simple, yet realistic.

Her heroes are also very realistic -- Moril is the kid who makes origami cranes instead of doing his math test. Mitt is entirely different, focused on revenge and getting more desperate every day, but learning about himself after he ends up adrift. Tanaqui is not quite as likable, since she is engulfed in a "mythic" story, but Maewen is a mysterious character, and also a likable one.

The four fantasies of the Dalemark Quartet leave some threads dangling at the end, but this is one of the most striking and original series that Jones has ever written.

                            Book Description

The first three volumes of Diana Wynne Jones's spellbinding quartet of novels were originally published in this country in the 1970s, and soon won the mythical kingdom of Dalemark a place on the literary map.

Cart and Cwidder, the first of these intriguing novels, relates the fortunes of Clennen and his family, itinerant musicians who travel the villages of Dalemark in their colorful cart. With warring earldoms and spies everywhere, there is little contact between the North and South of the country, and so the musicians often carry news-and sometimes, as now, a passenger. Who is this Kialan? Is there any connection between him and the sudden violence that overtakes them? The family's fate and Kialan's are bound together in terror and flight-and in music, for the songs of Dalemark mean more than they say.

Each book is a lure to the next in this classic, irresistible series.

4 out of 5 stars "I Move in More than One World...".......2005-04-05

Diana Wynne Jones is best known for her quirky books that combine magic with realistic, everyday people dealing with the problems that magic creates. Though some take place in parallel worlds, the general atmosphere of these books are contemporary and firmly grounded in reality. However, "Cart and Cwidder" is the first book in the Dalemark quartet that follows the more generic pattern of fantasy (war in a created world) - making it unique in Wynne Jones's canon of books, but a typical inclusion to the range of fantasy novels.

Due to the conflict between north and south countries in the land of Dalemark, very few travellers move between them, with the exception of licensed musicians in their horse-drawn carts, entertaining the crowds wherever they stop. Dagner, Moril and Brid are the children of the singer Clennen and Lenina who are perfectly content to travel the lands, singing and passing on news across the lands. But then Moril's parents take on a new passenger named Kialan whom immediately rubs Moril up the wrong way. Between constant bickering, the three siblings, their parents and Kialan make their way northwards, but soon tragedy strikes and the four children are thrown into a series of chaotic and dangerous events. Inheriting the largest, oldest cwidder in the cart, Moril soon learns that it contains immense power, and with hostile forces closing in around them and Kialan's hidden identity revealed, Moril must learn to use this power in order to save him and the north.

No book by Diana Wynne Jones could ever be truly bad, but "Cart and Cwidder" is certainly not the top of her game. Though it contains the same thoughtful commentary on human behaviour and clever twists, but it lacks the sparkle and wit of her many other books. The characters are not quite as vivid and interesting as the likes of Chrestomanci and Howl, and the story not quite as intriguing as those found in "The Power of Three" and "Black Maria".

Yet for all of this, "Cart and Cwidder" is a worthwhile read if you have the next three volumes on hand, for the way in which Wynne Jones has created this series is immensely interesting (each one has a different situation and set of characters, yet are intricately connected).

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest Children's Series.......2004-06-21

The Dalemark Quartet is an absolute classic - what I like most about it is that the first three books seem to be totally unlinked except for being set in the same 'world' of Dalemark. They completely turn the standard sequential trilogy/quartet model on its head. The characters are different from book to book. They don't coexist in time. Each is a compelling and brilliantly written stand-alone novel, but....
When I came to the final novel in the quartet I was awe-struck by Wynne Jones's deft handling of the ideas across the books. The links the parallels and the cunning interconnectedness of all four books slowly and magically unfold before you. I would give anything to write so well, so surely and so winningly. Every child's bookshelves should hold this series

                            5 out of 5 stars One of DWJ's Best.......2004-06-21

Like most Diana Wynne Jones books, this is published for children and probably most appreciated by adults. Having read it as both, I see a lot more in it now. The theme of finding your own voice, shown through the main character's struggle to control a powerful magic cwidder (which seems to be something of a cross between a dulcimer and a kettle drum), resonates like a mountain-moving spell through every scene in the book.

Music seems to be a metaphor for writing, or for expression and discovery, as it is in many of Jones's books.

                            5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2003-01-05

I loved this book. Between Brid and Moril, I think that Jones, the author, did a great job. The family seams to be happy, but there is more to that. The mother Leneia (sp?)is still in love with Ganner, the earl she was engaged to before she ran off with Clennen. Clennen, the father, is a wonderful singer and preformer, but holds a dark secret that puts the family in a few sticky situations. Then Kilian (sp?) comes along to join the family on there journey up to the north. He is unlike the rest of them, selfish (kind of), stuck up, and mean to Moril. When you think of him, you think BAD GUY!!! The Clennen gets murdered before Morils, Dagners (oldest son), and Brid. Oncwe he is gone Leneia goes to Ganner. At his house they see the man that killed Clennen. Then Brid, Moril, Kilian, and Dagner, head up noth to bring Kilian to Harnett. As they pass through towns, Dagner, trys to be a spy and hand oput information like his father, Clennen did. Not smart. He gets caught and is on the brink of ebing hanged. Brid and Moril now have to get Kilian, the son of the Earl of Harnett, up to the north before the weasal of a person, Tholion, gets he hands on him.

This is by far the best book in the quartet. I loved the characters and how tey interacted with eachother. I wanted more Brid and Kilian in the other books.

                            READ THIS BOOK

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Fantasy for Children and Young Adults.......2002-08-10

Cart and Cwidder tells the story of a family of singers: Clennen, the larger-than-life lead singer and father, Lenina, the cool, calm highborn mother, Dagner, the talented but shy eldest son, Brid, the impetuous, talkative daughter and Moril, the dreamy youngest son. The family is happy enough, traveling around the country between North and South boundaries, performing for various towns and villages along the way. But when they take on a traveler, Kialan, to take him to the North, their happy life starts to unravel. Clennen is suddenly murdered in the woods. Lenina marries the nobleman she was engaged to before she ran off with Clennen. Dagner tries to continue his father's spy work and ends up in jail. Brid thinks that she is more clever than she is and leads the evil Tholian to Kialan, who is really the duke's son. It is left to Moril to try and muddle his way through, half awake, half dreaming, and learn how to play the magicial cwidder that his father left him.

I loved the characters. As soon as they were introduced, I felt as if I knew them and how they worked together. The author has a nice story to tell and it unfolds rather well, but is kind of abrupt in parts. The beginning of the book is a little slower paced, but once the ball gets rolling, it gets faster and faster and faster and never slows down again. I thought that it would have been nice to have a little more plot development, a little more time to tell the story. However, I do understand that this is a children's/young adult's book and it is a good length for them to read. The main reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the rather detached way that the story is told. Everything is in third person and I sometimes felt that the characters weren't feeling anything. This may be intentional, as Moril is a rather dreamy and detached character and tends to distance himself from circumstances in the real world, but it made the story less than it could have been. It would have been nice to have a more active feel to the story as a whole. Still, I think that most younger readers will enjoy this book. It is also a good introduction to fantasy for teens and children as it takes place in a place that seems normal with touches of magic here and there.

                                        Book Description

Depression can spread like contagion through families, affecting everyone's lives but especially children's. The good news: We now have the tools to protect children from the legacy of depression. Drawing on vast clinical experience and original research, Dr. Beardslee shows for the first time how the principles of prevention can be effectively applied to families in which a parent is depressed. He offers specific, practical guidelines for parents, caretakers, and children as he outlines a step-by-step approach that will enable families to accept the reality of depression's effects on their lives and, from there, to nurture the resilience and bonds that will make them strong.
