4 out of 5 stars Unflinching and real.......2007-08-26

One of the hardest things for an author is to capture the essence of youth. It is nearly impossible for an adult to treat adolescent feelings and relationships as they are, without judgment or comment. Buckhanon's book does so, and masterfully.

The book shows us the progression in the lives of Antonio and Natasha. We see them go from from lovestruck teens to adult strangers. Buckhanon has accurately portrayed the distance that grows between two people as they grow and mature in starkly different environments. We see Natasha moving on and going to college and law school. We see Antonio becoming hardened and resigned to his fate in prison. As they grow, the reader sees the changes as they both mature and have new experiences. At the end of the book, the reader feels sense of loss and regret in both Antonio and Natasha, at what could have been if circumstances were different.

The frank and unflinching narration give this book a movie like quality. The letters are heartfelt and breathless in the beginning. As time passes, they grow more infrequent and distant. The reader feels the undercurrent of love that remains from the first page to last. The descriptions of jail and college are what a twenty year old would write. This book thus retains a great deal of authenticity and lets the reader see how a couple of young black kids from New York will react to the many different situations life throws at them.

This is an excellent and fast read. I recommend it to all, except those folks who find profanity to be offensive.

4 out of 5 stars This should be your next book club read.......2007-06-04

This book is dynamic in that it maintains it's innocence even within such harsh circumstances. The story is heartbreaking even when it's hopeless. And hopefull even as it breaks your heart. I really suggest sharing this book in your next book club meeting.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2007-05-11

This book was definitely a great read. I could not put it down and finished it in a few hours. From start to finish I was hooked. Although I wish it would have ended differently, it was most definitely a page turner. I look forward to Ms. Buckhanons next novel.

5 out of 5 stars stunning vocal performances.......2007-03-22

There are books on CD, and then there are audio performances. The two performers in Upstate, reading their characters' own letters to each other, lift us up and carry us through the arc of their moving relationship. Hip hop language comes through as a third character, as it changes with the times and with the maturity of the lovers over 10 years. I still hear their voices in my head. This is the best audio book performance I have ever listened to.

3 out of 5 stars compelling bittersweet realistic fiction.......2007-03-01

This book is written in ghetto-speak, recounting the lives of Natasha and Antonio, high school sweethearts forced to communicate by mail when he is found guilty of manslaughter for the death of his father, and sent to prison. Both come from disadvantaged Harlem homes, with absent or abusive fathers, mothers overwhelmed by work, poverty, and single-parenting, and surrounded by a culture of aggressive non-achievement. In spite of this, both have good hearts, common sense, honesty and genuine love for each other. Through their letters they recount their pasts, describe their friends, regret their mistakes, develop their hopes and dreams, vent their angers and frustrations, admit their fears. Each benefits from a mentor, an unexpected ally, who fuels their ambition and hope, guides their efforts in a constructive direction, which (ironically) ends their romance but not their friendship. This is a compelling story, full of contradictions; it is sad and hopeful, honest and puzzling, disturbing and mundane, educational and vulgar, but above all, thought provoking.

    1 out of 5 stars Totaly depressing.......2006-12-08

I thought it would be nice to read a book centered around a nearby town. While I liked the references to known places I found Belly very depressing and couldn't wait to stop reading it. It made getting older seem worthless and gave me a strong feeling of sadness. I kept waiting for a great ending but that never happened. I wish I never read this book. I think zero stars would be a better rating.

3 out of 5 stars Falls Into Place at the End.......2006-06-13

It's August 2001 in Saratoga Springs, Florida. It's hot and fifty-nine-year-old Belly O'Leary is being released from prison. He was sentenced six years for illegal gambling in his establishment, The War Bar; but got off early after four years for good behaviour.

Lisa Selin Davis' debut novel gives a peek into the life of Belly O'Leary during the week following his release. Despite being a proud Catholic, he's an "adulterer, gambler, liar, abuser, lazy drunk" and a terrible father. Throughout his reintegration into society Belly thinks only about how everything relates to him. His own self importance prevents him from connecting with his children, who desperately want a father, and getting to know his grandkids. He sees himself as their hero and can't figure out why they don't.

Davis' book reads like Belly has been in jail for 10-15 years instead of 4. Belly goes on and one about how this building or business has gone and this has been replaced by that. Especially his bar being replaced by the yuppie Cafe Newton. All of these endless changes really did not make sense to me and it was not until the end I realized why. Before prison, Belly wasn't present in his own life. He was blind to everything except, drinking and gambling and having sex with his mistress. In the end he comes to this realization. Jail was literally his wake up call.

Belly's story is an excellent example of how we can take the people around us and our surroundings for granted. Life keeps going on whether we pay attention or not. Davis is very subtle. Her prose is clean, smooth and to the point. Only once I was thrown off when she talked about the "gurgling" fat under someone's arms.

I really hated this book most of the way through, correction, I really hated Belly. He's not a likeable guy. I constantly fought with putting the book down for good or reading until its conclusion. With the last few chapters everything falls into place, if you're watching. Having finished it, I'm pleased I stayed around for the whole ride.

4 out of 5 stars Belly, A Book For The Ages.......2005-12-06

This book is like finding some unpublished treasure by Richard Russo or Richard Price lurking on the "new fiction" table at your favorite bookstore. Indeed, Lisa Selin Davis, a name new to me, out-Russos Russo with her unsparing portrayal of an ex-con down on his luck and half-heartedly trying to make a new start in his old town, that has moved on during the four years he was in the pen for a gambling offense. Lisa Selin Davis does for charming Saratoga Springs what William Kennedy used to do for Albany, viz, turn back the sprightly facade to expose the horrifying underside--in this case, I'm tempted to call it the under "belly"--of a major New York State city.

Saratoga Springs, with its race track and its vast pool of crooked pols and gang related graft, is meaty turf for Lisa Selin Davis, and she chooses to frame her story with a modern updating of the old legend of the "Judgment of Paris." If you remember, Paris was given the questionable honor of having to award the golden apple to one of three goddesses. In BELLY, our hero has to come back and remake acquaintance with his three daughters, different as day is from night as they are from one another. One is a frustrated artist and a "mouse," another a Lesbian and largely offstage, though her girlfriend is very visible; Belly refers to her as his "Basset Hound," and finally there is Nora, the mother of three sons she has named after different rock guitarists, Jimi, Stevie Ray, and King (after B.B, King). Yes, it's the kind of heavily ironic and trashy signature that you find only in novels, but it works well in this context because otherwise you might have a bit of trouble telling Belly's different women apart.

Davis is great with creating male characters, but what keeps her ahead of the pack is her unusual interest in probing women and what makes them keep trying to love a man who has never done anything to them but put them down and treat them badly. It's like the Stockholm Syndrome, but in honor of Lisa Selin Davis' canny knack for characterization, I propose renaming it the "Belly Syndrome," for unlikeable Belly O'Leary might well be played by Jack Nicholson in the bittersweet film version of this novel, if one were made, and if Nicholson were on the market for an Oscar-worthy final role, a fitting sequel to "Five Easy Pieces" or "As Good as it Gets."

Lisa Selin Davis also has a poet's gift for language, and sentence by sentence there is always something memorable in every line, whether it is an unexpected metaphor or a new way to describe the seamy side of Saratoga Springs. She is a writer to watch out for.

5 out of 5 stars Belly Goes Deep.......2005-10-03

Lisa Davis's book takes a gamble on one man, Belly O'Leary, a 59-year-old bar-owner returning to his daughters after being released from prison. He's a drunk; he's mean; he's got nothing going for him, and yet with every page turned I wanted more of him. No one likes Belly, his daughters struggle not to hate him, but he's more real, more a man than half the men in everyday life who lack either the passion to follow their raw desires or the conscience to know when it led them astray - as in Belly's case, again and again. What he comes out of the can wanting, other than a lump sum of dirty money owed to him, is all the tenderness and love deprived of him as a child. The poignancy and ease of Davis's writing is mesmerizing as she creates the world of a broken-up lower class family in Saratoga Springs, New York during an August heat wave. Her words coddle you as she tells a heartbreaking story.

4 out of 5 stars Your Reading Belly Will Be Full ...Mostly.......2005-08-01

"Belly" O'Leary is coming home to Saratoga Springs after four years in prison on charges of running a gambling operation in Florida. And life in his old hometown has changed drastically.

Those fancy-dancy coffee outlets are everywhere; a new WalMart has opened; democrats are in charge of city hall; and those he thought to be his friends have all but left the area or shrugged him off. It's enough to drive a 60-year-old man crazy! Or at least into the home of one of his kids.

Nora is one of Belly's three surviving children. She has two boys who are handfuls, and a husband who's never home. Now she has to take on a third child, ala Belly, her father. He's a drinking, abusive, stubborn, and contradictory person (just like a two-year-old, but without the beer breath.)

Nora's house and Belly's past are like a match and a stick of dynamite. One is bound to eventually find the other.

    Or are they?

    ********************************************************************************

Author Lisa Selin Davis, a confessed creative writing teacher, debuts with a strong narrative novel right out of the shoot. Her prose is often times beautifully flowing if a bit wordy. But she does get the reader right to the heart of the matter, showing us this dysfunctional family in a very intimate way.

I had a really hard time rating this book, but settled on four stars because it was just an easy read and had some excellent dialogue and descriptions.

But there were problems, the most notable of which was the simple fact that Belly spent only four years in prison, but exclaims on all the changes to "his town" after his release. This bothered me quite a bit because things don't change that much in four years.

The ending, too, is a bit of a let-down, as there is no great message or changes noted in any of the characters. They just ...are.

Still, the book's an enjoyable read from a prose standpoint. Now Ms. Davis just needs to learn a bit more on plotting and finishing.

            Book Description

Scrying means seeing magical images in a reflective medium, such as a crystal ball, mirror, or natural source of inspiration like fire, water or clouds. The word "scry," derived from the Anglo-Saxon word descry, means to "perceive dimly."

Scrying in shiny surfaces has been practiced in almost every culture and time, not only by mystics, clairvoyants and magicians, but also by every girl who has gazed into a mirror and hoped to see her lover's face in the glass.

Though it is one of the most ancient ways of predicting the future, scrying is as relevant today as when our distant ancestors gazed into pools by moonlight to locate the herds - it does not conflict with modern scientific knowledge or psychology.

Scrying the Secrets of the Future offers practical, hands-on guidance to using a wide variety of methods from many cultures and ages—from Ancient Egypt, the Aztecs and Mayans, and Classical Greece and Rome to Medieval European magicians, village wise women and 21st century coffee-shop divination. Discussion of each method includes its history and cultural background, traditional practices, and how to adapt these techniques to the needs of the modern world and everyday decision making. This unique book will help you:

            • Learn to see and interpret images in many forms, including wax, herbs and oils on water, crystal balls and candles, shadows and dark mirrors. • Explore additional techniques of clairaudience, psychic hearing and clairsentience, and psychic impressions, to make your scrying multi dimensional. • Discover how to prepare yourself psychically, find the best scrying tools, empower them, ensure you are protected spiritually as you work, and how to close down your psychic energies after divination. • Find out how to maximize future possibilities, avoid potential problems, and advise others privately and professionally through clairvoyance • Communicate with and channel angels and spirit guides and discover past lives and worlds.

            3 out of 5 stars Still a Secret.......2007-06-14

Cassandra Eason has written dozen of books on the subject of psychic developement and magic, so obviously she should be an expert. When I read the biographical information on her, I assumed that this book would be very in-depth. I also expected that it would be well written and easy to understand. I have been using tarot for divination for decades and hoped to increase that knowledge with other systems. I have tried various forms of candle and dark mirror scrying in the past without much satisfaction. It was my expectation that this book would fill my need for further instruction.

The book has 14 chapters, each one focusing on a different method of scrying such as candles, water, mirrors - both clear and black, clouds and crystal balls. Each chapter discusses what you need for the particular form of divination, what otherworldly powers you might call on to help you (angels, spirit animals, Gods and Goddess, ancestors) and simple working rituals. There is also information on historical data and uses, but no footnotes of any of the source materials.

Ms. Easton has a habit I found distressing of saying the student should do a working in a particular manner only to end her statement with a disclaimer telling the reader to do whatever feels comfortable to them if the method just outlined isn't to the reader's liking. She pulls elements from different cultures and Pantheons completely willy-nilly into her discussions, listing so many options that it was often overwhelming.

I found the writing of the book inconsistent in many areas. A chapter would have highly detailed areas, which were quite fascinating, that start to pull the reader in only to meander off on a tangent that was almost mind numbingly dull. I love to read but I am glad I have finally finished this book.

The chapter on tealeaf scrying was very difficult to understand. Directions on which area of the cup meant what in a reading were so poorly written I find it hard to believe anyone would get a working knowledge without other instruction. On the other hand, the chapters on crystal ball and clouds were thoroughly fascinating. If the rest of the book were as helpful as these two chapters, it would be well worth the time and effort to read it and try out the various methods presented.

The final chapter "Scrying with Shadows" appears to be a catchall area where everything that didn't fit neatly in the previous chapters ended up. There was smoke and steam divination, as well as gemstone scrying. Actual shadow scrying took up less than half the chapter.

There is an appendix with listings of different cultural names for the Fates. Plus there is a listing of useful reading for further study (the author lists 9 of her previous books here) and lastly an index.

EPOCH MOMENTS AND SECRETS - JOHN LENNON AND THE BEATLES AT THE MIRROR OF MAN'S DESTINY, with the help of the author, will take you on a journey THEN [The Sixties], NOW, and into the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.

THE BEATLES have affected mankind. The total Trilogy work will expose the real story - the life and times [THEN & NOW] of THE BEATLES' legacy, and of their history - and how it is woven into the fabric of what is being reported by media, newsgroups, government, universities, internet and discussed by world citizens.

While all the other BEATLES books TALK about the parties, TALK about the drugs and TALK about the band's life backstage and on the road, Richard Warren Lipack's THE LAST CONCERTS, the first installment in THE BEATLES' TRILOGY - SHOWS IT - with no holds barred!

EPOCH MOMENTS AND SECRETS is drawn from the single most important extant photograph collection on THE BEATLES in the world. Many of the incredible photographs in this book are reproduced for the first time ever. There are well over 150 photos alone - all BEHIND-THE-SCENES - of THE BEATLES during the last days of their live performing career - up to that moment they retired from the concert stage, in August of 1966.

It is significant to note that comprised within the monumental 367 page coffee-table book: THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY, released by THE BEATLES and APPLE in the year 2000, only a scant TWO (2) photographs are reproduced treating the period of the band's 1966 last concert. These consisted of previously published images by San Francisco lensman Jim Marshall.

Within the present realm and scope of THE BEATLES own vast and mighty resources, it is absolutely amazing that so little treating the time of the band's last concert came to be gathered and reproduced in THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY - in an effort to tell this part of the story of what is obviously the epitome of their live performing career!

The Trilogy work however makes the reader witness to the odyssey of a major pivotal event in history as it ACTUALLY unfolds! This is done through the painstaking state-of-the-art digitally enhanced reproduction of action photographs arranged in sequential order according to the sequence of the negative film frames - all as they had been clicked-off by the roving camera - over the tour period. The methods employed to reproduce these images include the rare and lost art of maintaining the halftone dot in the shadow area comprised within the black and white photographs found in EPOCH MOMENTS AND SECRETS.

As well, a special "Quadtone Process" is used to make black and white images into those of striking colors and hues. This is all in an effort to re-create for the reader's eye the vividness of like what THE BEATLES themselves saw during this historic vector-point in time - as they found themselves heading towards destiny and their last live stage show ever - while under the influence of the illicit drug L.S.D. 25.

There are some 35 out of 45 FULL COLOR images reproduced in EPOCH MOMENTS AND SECRETS that show THE BEATLES during the period of their last concerts, while THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY only shows but one!

The text to THE LAST CONCERTS segment of EPOCH MOMENTS AND SECRETS has been researched and executed over a span of nineteen years. And with this, no stone has been left unturned. Here for the first time, the reader and devotee of THE BEATLES can begin to understand their effect on modern society.

3 out of 5 stars This book shows how the Beatles are tied into conspiracies.......2001-05-16

The Beatles were more than just a rock band. In historical context, they were part of a huge government engineered social event which has been overseen through the years by secret societies and unknown branches of U.S. and British governments. The engineering continues to evolve today.

As John Lennon has stated, one moment they were playing all kinds of seedy bars, strip joints, and dance clubs across the UK and Europe. A gritty covers band with an attitude and ability to play. The next thing he knew, they were meeting the Queen of England and heads of state across the globe as they toured. Transforming them from a heavy rock band into a cute, loveable teen sensation almost overnight was what their manager Brian Epstein did, as he promised if they did this they'd be rich beyond their dreams and be bigger than Elvis. But it went way beyond even that as their importance ballooned into political issue and their effect on the 'youth culture'. Heads of state took notice of their citizen's enchantment with the band. The 'clean' image Epstein marketed got them into family rooms around the globe; where for the band was where the money they were promised was; and for Tavistock, a worldwide opportunity to capture the minds of the entire world's youth.

What the Beatles got themselves into through Epstein's contracts and guidance, unbeknownst to them, was a role in the New World Order's plans to test out mass mind control. You'll learn about England's top secret Tavistock facilities (which as predicted in the book, now monitors all communications passing in and out of England), and how it secretly helped engineer the Beatles 'invasion' of the U.S. and then the world and why. A discussion of the Beatles' early music, and it's hypnotic "12-atonal" quality attempts to explain the reason their music seems to elicit senses within the brain common in many humans, especially those in a certain age group.

The subject of the group's decision to use and publicize their use of LSD and cannabis marijuana as they began to move in their own direction beyond their manager's initial Beatlemania-era "cute" image, and into the psychedelic-rock/hard rock era, is discussed in detail. Previously unpublished photos of the band using LSD and them performing at their last concerts appear in the book for the first time.

Secret documents are exposed from FBI, CIA files. Social engineering, the mark of the beast, Waco, black choppers, militia, mind control, the drug trade, Nazi connections, UFO and alien appearances, backwards messages. The modern multimedia presentation of music and marketing began here.

The book is not extremely organized in a comprehensible manner. It's best to take this book a chapter at a time. It seems the author may have crammed too much in one book that might have been meant for three since it says this is a trilogy. However you will learn so much more than you may want to know about how the Beatles fit into the cosmic conspiracy that you'll scare yourself. I think every major conspiracy theory is touched upon.

The book seems to weave in and out in this manner, to some great stories about the Beatles on tour and behind the scenes, with previously unpublished photos.

If any of this sounds slightly interesting, believe me, it is quite fascinating, and you should read this book immediately. What you think and saw was happening on the outside, was happening because of some very bizarre coincidences.

Interesting addendum: In 1996 An episode of the TV series "Dark Skies" was based on this book's chapter about the Beatles' first U.S. appearance on a live broadcast of the Ed Sullivan Show in February of 1964. Seen by 73 million viewers across the nation, (that's almost everyone who had a television set then), it was the perfect time to implant the message and test mass mind control. Was it Tavistock who masterminded it all? This book has the answers, and raises even more questions that still don't but one day we may know the answer as more government documents become declassified regarding these operations. (I'm hoping to see parts 2 and 3 of this trilogy get published with all of the events in Beatles and world history that have taken place since the book first came out in 1996.)

5 out of 5 stars Brides of Montclair series.......2001-11-25

This is one of the best Historical Romances series I have ever read. I have purchased the entire set as each book was released. Not only have I read them but so has my daughter and sister and I have told many others of the series. You can really come to know all the women in these books and find that even though they are different they are really alike in their love for their husbands, children and most of all Montclair.

5 out of 5 stars Brides of Montclair - 1-5.......2000-01-25

I've only read the first 5 books and am captivated by them. I refuse to read any further until I'm able to complete my set. I'm only lacking GALLANT BRIDE, HERO'S BRIDE AND SENATOR'S BRIDE, GALLANT BRIDE being the next that I haven't read yet. I'll submit my review as soon as I've been able to read the entire series, hoping that will be soon.

5 out of 5 stars All the books in the series are powerful and touching........1999-06-20

They're books about women who endured hardships and trials with courage. Though they're about women in olden days, their courage touches people in present days.

5 out of 5 stars This series has great depth, and a sense of the old South.......1998-12-09

The Brides of Montclair series is one of my favorites. I love the books about the South and it's struggles against the Civil War and the devestation of having their only way of life (slavery) destroyed. I've come to appreciate the authors who take the efforts to write this historic-lined books, especially the Civil War ones. The fictional part of this series is outstanding. Jane Peart casts a great character line, and the depth she gives the books is stupendous. I've read every book in this series many times and they have quickly become my favorites.

BodyStories is a book that engages the general reader as well as the serious student of anatomy. Thirty-one days of learning sessions heighten awareness about each bone and body system and provide self-guided studies. The book draws on Ms. Olsen's thirty years as a dancer and teacher of anatomy to show how our attitudes and approaches to our body affect us day to day. Amusing and insightful personal stories enliven the text and provide ways of working with the body for efficiency and for healing. BodyStories is used as a primary text in college dance departments, massage schools, and yoga training programs internationally.

This is a very good book. It is an excellent how to guide for growing to understand your body one part at a time. However, in the end the process seems truly integrative. I can see how it would be a very good book for bodywork beginners or pros. Enjoy!

                  5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2004-08-10

this book really amazed me. the title alone drew me to it. i am a Pilates instructor and i wanted to learn as much as i could about the body and mind working together. this book breaks down the body into different areas, gives you a little anatomy lesson, and gives activities to connect with that body part. some are meditations and some are hands-on. it gives you a better idea of your own relationship to your body as well as a sense of gratitude for all it does for us. truly a gem!
