Book Description

At 9:02 am on Wednesday April 19, 1995, two tons of explosives ripped apart the federal office building in Oklahoma City and the psyche of America. The worst case of domestic terrorism in our history, this explosion killed 169 men, women, and children. The author of this book has written, If [this book] had been available to the general public . . . the Oklahoma bombing would not have come as such a surprise. It has been considered by the Justice Department and other government agencies as the bible of right-wing militia groups, and the FBI believes it provided the blueprint for the Oklahoma City bombing. Barricade Books has published it so America can better understand the cause of racism and extremism.

While this book is far from a literary classic, it is a rather fascinating read. I don't profess to be an extremist, but some of the things McDonald describes about the fall of our society ring eerily true.

THE TURNER DIARIES is disgusting Neo-Nazi pornography. Many have commented on Pierce's (lack of) writing ability, but it is the content of this book that would be grossly revolting to any human being with basic decency. Pierce's "protagonist" is a gun nut who rants about government "tyranny" and the loss of personal freedom and then goes about helping to create one of the most brutal, violent, racist and oppressive societies imaginable, slaughtering millions upon millions across the globe in the process. The hypocrisy is unbelievable, but what makes it more unbearable is the smug, self-righteous tone Pierce's "protagonist" takes throughout the book as he personally murders innocent men, women and children for the "Organization." Hitler is described in these pages as "the Great One" and his Final Solution is fully embraced. People are murdered in cold blood not only because they are non-White, but simply for disagreeing with the "Great Revolution"'s racist doctrines.

The book has no redeeming value whatsoever, but it is interesting for the following reasons: 1) It inspired Timothy McVeigh to bomb the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City; 2) It is still sold at EVERY gun show in America alongside Nazi paraphernalia; and 3)Many of the basic tenets espoused by Earl Turner are being aggressively advocated for today by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Take a look at the NRA's "Freedom in Peril" pamphlet, which was leaked on the Internet in early 2007, and you will see many of the themes of THE TURNER DIARIES repeated in a more "politically correct" dialect. Hyperbolic warnings of a "marching axis of adversaries far darker and more dangerous than gun owners have ever known," racist depictions of "illegal alien gangs" hovering menacingly over white America (and their women), vicious attacks on the country's free press, and even a crude drawing of a "liberated" American woman complete with hairy legs.

One of the Organization's key goals in THE TURNER DIARIES was to create chaos in urban areas and convince Americans that the government could no longer protect them. Lacking confidence in the government, they would then turn to the Organization for protection, out of simple fear. The NRA is following that playbook today, implementing policies at the federal and state level that: a) create massive loopholes in our gun laws and ensure the flow of illegally trafficked guns in our nation's cities; b) break down the rule of law by turning everyday Americans into would-be Earl Turners that can fire away on their fellow citizens with impunity (Shoot First statutes); and c) cripple law enforcement by denying them access to key information and resources (i.e., the Tiahrt amendments and a miniscule ATF budget).

In that sense, THE TURNER DIARIES (published just before the NRA's infamous "Cincinnatti Revolution") can be seen as an early landmark in an evolving right-wing response to the civil rights movement and "Peace Era" of the 1960s that continues to this day.

Born in 1933, William Luther Pierce earned degrees in physics and worked for a time at Los Alamos; he was also an early associate of The American Nazi Party, which later became known as the National Socialist White People's Party. Following various internal conflicts, Pierce left the NSWPP to assume control of the like-minded National Youth Alliance, which in turn came to be known as the National Alliance. All these organizations were both fascist and racist in ideology. Pierce died in 2002.

In 1978, and using the pseudonym Andrew MacDonald, Pierce published the book THE TURNER DIARIES. Although it circulated through numerous racist organizations, and although it inspired the formation of at least one terrorist group in the 1980s, the book was not well known until 1995, when Timothy McViegh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, killing 168 people and injuring more than 800. Although McVeigh seemed to be primarily motivated by the federal fiascos at Ruby Ridge and Waco, he was also a great fan of THE TURNER DIARIES; indeed, photocopied pages of the novel were found in his possession at the time of his arrest. While THE TURNER DIARIES did not offer a "blue print" for the bombing per se, many consider that it contributed to McViegh's mindset and motivations, and the book became famous as a result.

THE TURNER DIARIES is told in the form of an extended flashback. It is 2099, and all non-white races have been purged from the earth; the diary itself tells how this purge occurred. The story begins with the government and media in the hands of Jews and liberals who have passed "The Cohen Act," a law that strips civilians of their right to bear arms. In response to this, Turner and other like-minded people launch a guerrilla war against the government. Centered in Los Angeles, they execute all Jews, blacks, people of color, and "race traitors;" in time they take possession of a nuclear weapons site and provoke a nuclear war that has the effect of killing all non-whites and leaving their own group to create an all-white fascist state where every one lives happily ever after.

In terms of literary merit, the book is very simplistic, written for people who operate at a fifth or sixth grade reading level. There are no hard words, no complex plots, and the book tends to be inconsistent in terms of internal logic. It is also very, very badly edited, with one misspelling and typographical error after another. But all of this is really a little beside the point. Simply put, the book is a vicious, paranoid, anti-American, pro-fascist, horrendously racist piece of trash. It is a highly obvious bit of propaganda that exists purely in order to recruit the uneducated into the author's own anti-American, pro-fascist, ultra-racist mindset.

Sociologists and others who wish to obtain insight into the ravings of extremist groups will find THE TURNER DIARIES a good place to begin--but if you read the book from such motives, I strongly recommend that you find a way to do so without actually buying a copy, lest you actually fund the organizations that subscribe to its philosophy. As for casual readers--no, I do not recommend it. THE TURNER DIARIES is a waste of paper that could be used to print something else--and almost anything else would be better.

5 out of 5 stars Far Thinking Novel.......2007-08-11

I had the privilege of knowing the author, Dr. William L. Pierce. He was a brilliant physicist and teacher. He thought of societal problems in the same way that he thought of physics problems. He would observe trends and counter forces in society and predict the future based on his observations. Like using a telescope to see into the future, Dr. Pierce was very far-thinking.

The author saw societal disasters looming for the White race similar to a scientist observing an asteroid heading for planet Earth. He took it upon himself to warn the White race of the impending danger. It is not something that he wanted to do. It was something that he had to do. That was his mission in life. The book "The Turner Diaries" was one vehicle that he used to accomplish his mission.

Another tool that he used was the creation of his organization, The National Alliance. Every week he would do a very deep thinking internet broadcast that is still available in free archives on the internet. Even though he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he continued with his mission of making videos and internet programs right up to the end in the year 2001.

4 out of 5 stars The Turner Diaries.......2007-03-30

I believe this book has been given an undeserved bad wrap. There are some parts that you must park your brain and realize that it is only a book, but it also has many intriguing situations. Aside from some out-of-the-blue racism, the book does have content to it. It also shows what could possibly happen in our country. Liberals are always trying to take our 2nd ammendment right away from us. In fact, a bill was just circulated for that exact reason.

The main reason the Organization even revolts is because the goverment took away all legal gun ownership. There are just too many misrepresentations of this book, and it kind of disturbs me. Yeah, it gets pretty hateful, but there are too many unfair reviews on this book saying that it's all racial. The point of it is to overthrow our ridiculous goverment that begins taking rights of all Americans away.

Read it for yourself and make your own opinion on it. I thought it wasn't the greatest literary work, but none-the-less, it was still very intriguing.

Book Description

In the German ranks during World War II, there were not only young adults but also teenagers who were seventeen years old, fighting for a sinister cause. This is the story of a Waffen SS recruit in the midst of the dying days of the Reich. The main character, Otto, is a sensitive soldier, afraid of living up to the manly Nazi ideal. In battle, he is one motorcyclist amongst a company of elite policemen ordered to squash Tito's uprising in Slovenia. Imagine the suffering and misunderstanding of a seventeen-year-old boy, fighting a war glorified before and then made confusing as he enters an atmosphere clamored with horrifying experiences. This novel is filled with suspense and heartbreaking moments. It is war in its true color and is different from any war novel for its unique slant on a confused nonpatriotic soldier who is thrown into a hopeless fight against a Communist insurgency.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2007-08-29

The book is not well written and has little plot and poor character development. It is not a worthwhile read. At best it is a poor attempt to show the futility of war.

5 out of 5 stars A twisting journey.......2005-11-21

Keenly researched, pinpointingly precise, this amazing story takes us back to World War II yet evokes sinister shadows of our own life and times. A book that can be enjoyed on many levels, we see the hero in a confilct both with the nature of war and his own lost childhood - a conflict that brings into focus many horrors and harsh demans on the young man's mind.

Yet it is not only the inner, intellectual struggle that makes this book so absorbing. There is almost too much action in places - graphic and sometimes disturbing. Amongst the maelstrom of killing and idealised hate there runs the theme of one man (really just a child) pitted against madness. How he deals with this (or often fails to) is the real sweat and guts of this drama.

It is challenging and controversial, bizarre and black in descrption and emotions. The thread of decent humanity runs through the story but doesn't always see the light of day, because this is about reality seen through tortured eyes.

A worthwhile read and one that may just turn your head around.

Over 13 novels and a popular television series later, Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse has taken his place alongside Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Lord Peter Wimsey, Philip Marlowe, and a handful of other famous sleuths. Like most of them, Morse possesses an uncanny intelligence, especially in matters of crime and crosswords, but Dexter has always made sure that his detective remains fully a man--flawed and uncertain despite an outward bravado. In this final, difficult story, Morse's humanity unfolds much as his cases do: with the slow revelation of secrets and surprises that frequently catch the reader off guard.

The novel begins with events now a year old. Yvonne Hamilton had been found in her home murdered--handcuffed and naked. The Thames Valley Police had supposed robbery, but their suspects had dissolved and all the leads had dried up. A year later, while Morse is on furlough, two anonymous calls to Chief Superintendent Strange open the possibility of a new line of inquiry. Strange wants his best man on the case. Morse, however, shows a surprising reluctance to embroil himself in what seems to be a classic Morsean puzzle. When he finally does reopen the investigation, his unorthodox approach worries even his longtime sidekick, Sergeant Lewis--who begins to suspect that his boss has a personal connection to the victim. What could Morse be up to? And--as many readers will be asking throughout--what could possibly bring his career to a close?

Like the work of few other mystery writers, Dexter's Morse series has consistently blended the dignity of high art with the grimness of crime and punishment. While it's a cliché to say that he transcends the genre, he has certainly expanded its range to novels that entertain while they instruct--even when that instruction is grammatical. The Remorseful Day is indeed a remorseful farewell, a delicately handled conclusion to a series that will now remain artfully complete, not lingering beyond its time. --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description

For a year, the murder of Mrs. Yvonne Harrison at her home in Oxfordshire had baffled the Thames Valley CID. The manner of her death--her naked handcuffed body left lying in bed--matched her reputation as a women of adventuresome sexual tastes. The case seemed perfect for Inspector Morse. So why has he refused to become involved--even after anonymous hints of new evidence, even after a fresh murder? Sgt. Lewis's loyalty to his infuriating boss slowly turns to deep distress as his own investigations suggest that Mrs. Harrison was no stranger to Morse. Far from it. Never has Morse performed more brilliantly than in this final adventure, whose masterly twists and turns through the shadowy byways of passion grip us to the death. . . .

5 out of 5 stars "How hopeless under ground/ Falls the remorseful day.".......2006-04-28

As he brings his thirteen-volume Inspector Morse series (and his own writing career) to a poignant close with this 1999 novel, author Colin Dexter selects the title of this final book from an A. E. Housman poem, which celebrates the brilliance of sunrise and the sad inevitability of sunset--an appropriate symbol of the passage of time, an image of life and death, and a play on Morse's name. Here Dexter reveals far more about Chief Inspector Morse than in any of his previous novels, as Morse faces an especially complex and difficult case, at the same time that he is privately dealing with health issues.

A gruff and uncompromising man of unquestioned integrity and honesty, Morse is a music buff with a love for literature and syntax, a man who frequently corrects the grammatical errors of Sgt. Lewis, his loyal, hard-working, and less educated assistant. Suffering from "indigestion" and diabetes, Morse blithely ignores the dietary regimen recommended by his doctors, experimenting with his insulin dosage while continuing to indulge his love of scotch whisky, both at home and in local pubs, where he and the tee-totalling Lewis often conduct their interviews.

In this case, Morse surprises Sgt. Lewis by being less than enthusiastic about investigating a "cold case," a murder the previous year of a nurse, Yvonne Harrison, who was found handcuffed, gagged, and nude in her bed. Morse knew Yvonne when he himself was hospitalized, and Sgt. Lewis begins to suspect, for the first time ever, that Morse may be hiding information about the case, for his own reasons. Lewis continues to investigate as conscientiously as he can, mostly on his own, though this case, with its unusually large number of suspects, possible motives, red herrings, additional murders, wrong turns, financial maneuverings, and missing evidence, is one that cries out for better cooperation between Morse and Lewis.

Ultimately tying up all the loose ends and resolving the issue of Morse's honesty, Dexter creates dramatic and moving scenes, showing the depth of the unexpressed feelings between Morse and Lewis and their respect for each other. For the first time, Morse reveals his vulnerability, and Lewis, seeing this, becomes stronger and more self-confident. Always concerned with bringing about justice and protecting those who are innocent, Morse, despite appearances, obeys his personal code throughout this valedictory novel, leaving a lasting legacy for the lovers of this series. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Goodbye to Morse .......2006-03-25

Colin Dexter has provided readers with some of the best detective fiction ever written. With framed degrees in Classics hanging on his wall and some crossword competition trophies standing on his mantelpiece, Dexter was qualified to bring much greater depth and literary value to the writing of detective fiction than the majority of its practitioners when he began work on his first Chief Inspector Morse novel in the early 1970s.

In all he has produced 13 Morse books and this, written in 1998, is the last of them. Expect detective fiction that has the literary quality of any of the best C20th novels. Don't expect equal sophistication in the crime content, however. The murders here are as sordid and sensational as those invented by Stephen King. This case concerns Yvonne Harrison who was found dead and almost naked handcuffed to her bed one year ago. Other murders follow. As if there is not enough mystery amongst all these elements, there is the mystery of Morse's attitude to the case. He refuses to head a reopening of the investigation, yet he is intent in forwarding his own private inquires. What has he to hide? What is to be hidden?

More curmudgeonly than ever, and more critical than ever of his loyal side-kick, Sargeant Lewis, Morse's journey to the truth parallels his own journey towards death.

The Morse books formed the basis for a highly-acclaimed TV series starring John Thaw. Audio book collectors can enjoy an unabridged version read by Terrence Hardiman. When delivering the dialogue, Terrence Hardiman skillfully adopts the voices of the principal actors in the TV series.

5 out of 5 stars And so we say goodbye........2005-11-14

This was a bittersweet story. It's intricately plotted and the puzzle is one that would have even the best minds wondering, but the whole time that I was reading I realized that it was the last of a truly great series, and a truly great detective mind. The thing that I loved about Morse (both in the hooks and in the television series) is that he's just an ordinary man with ordinary flaws, but he had a brilliant mind. In this book Morse is working with Lewis to solve a year old murder case, and the deeper that they dig, the more Lewis realizes that the victim in this case was personally known to Morse and Morse might know a lot more about her and the case than he lets on. During the whole book, Morse is battling his own demons. He has a premonition that he isn't going to last long and his health continues to fail, but in spite of that he does solve the complex case, even though he doesn't get a chance to personally charge the murderer. This is such an excellent series, and I recommend it highly, but be prepared. Once you get to this book after reading carefully through the series, you will feel as sad as I do.

5 out of 5 stars And so a great mind leaves us for that long good night..........2003-10-20

It never ceases to amaze me concerning certain circumstances. Shortly after PBS discontinued the series on Colin Dexter's books on Inspector Morse, John Thaw who played the part died. A similar track of events happened after PBS stopped making Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett, he also died. So forever will my mind see these two great actors in their final appearances as the intensely brilliant, very British, very demanding crime-solvers that they were in spite of the other parts they played throughout their lives.

And so when I read this final book of Dexter's concerning Inspector Morse's final days and his last case, I see a curmudgeon with a shock of white hair, an obvious limp, and a tendency to use big words wandering throughout this book. I also see a perplexed Kevin Whatley as Morse's very long-suffering sidekick Seargeant Lewis. And at the end when Morse is dead, and Lewis is struggling so hard to come to terms with information left behind that seems to implicate Morse as a less then perfect officer of the law, only to find out that Morse had been protecting their soon-to-retire senior officer and his dying wife...when Lewis breaks down and cries for his loss finally, my heart breaks with him.

Dexter was right to stop his series. His writing remained magnificently British to the end, but all series get stail and sometimes the authors just need the opportunity to move on to something else. And like with Jeremy Brett's death, even the production of a prequel could not be done, because the man who ultimately 'is' the part of Morse is no longer with us.

Since this is the last in the series, I gave it a five. Some of the earlier stories are better, and this one was a bit confusing in some spots. There seem to be suspects all over the place, and yet, some don't make sense. But the writing is so much better than most American mystery writers, and as I said, the end nearly brought me to tears. Morse himself, while treating his symptoms which he knows indicate a heart attack in happening with acid reflux medicine, he continues to be himself and solve the one case from which he tried to distance himself, because of personal involvement with the victim.

Morse never finds the happiness of human companionship in his life. But his life is full never-the-less with his job, with his music and reading, and with his relationship with Lewis (who is surprised at the end with being the recipient of an inheritance from this man he thought did not respect him. but who loved him nevertheless).

An appropriate ending to a wonderful series.

4 out of 5 stars The last of Inspector Morse.......2002-12-12

A 318 page story separated into 80 chapters, a prolegomenon, and an epilogue, this is the last of the Inspector Morse novels. Morse is protrayed as an alcoholic diabetic who does not take care of his health. He gets a substantial portion of his calories from Glenfiddich and various brands of ale. He has been on medical leave, but is ordered, along with Sgt. Lewis, to take responsibility for investigating a case. A year before, a married woman with loose morals was found murdered in her bedroom. The case was never solved, but is now reopened when Chief Inspector Strange reports mysterious telephone calls.

The case takes some new twists and turns when people involved start turning up dead. Investigations reveal that the woman was not the only one sleeping around. Some evidence had conveniently disappeared during the initial investigation. The case is well known to Inspector Morse fans as it was a TV production. However, the written story has some differences from what was on TV, which is usually the case.

I would rate the novel PG-13 based on content.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book -- get it if you can!.......2007-04-13

I read this and Doomfarers when they first came out during the horrid period in the 80s when fantasy was either new Conan novels or plain junk. Only Glen Cook's Black Company series kept me as entertained as these two books did. I can't recommend these two enough.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally good read.......2006-07-27

Though this book and its companion are now out of print, don't hestitate to buy them used. Like other reviewers here, I have read the Coramonde duology many times over the years, and enjoyed every reading. Though not high literature, these are two of the most readable and entertaining books I've ever read, and a personal benchmark for simply pleasurable fiction.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book.......2003-01-05

I re-read the Doomfarers and Starfollowers at least once every year. Mr. Daley was one of those authors who threw you right into the action within the first few pages and unfolded the history and detail as he went. Brian Daley served in the Army and it shows in the books attention to detail. I highly recommend.

                    5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!!.......2002-04-05

I'm sure most of us got started on Brian Daley through his Han Solo trilogy like I did. Then my cousin brought this book over called "The Doomfarers of Coramonde" and since it was from the author of some of my fav. Star Wars books, I gave it a shot. Boy am I glad that I did! An Armored Personnel Carrier gets [snatched] out of the middle of a fight [and sent] to another reality where they have to slay a dragon and rescue a sorceress... and that's only a small bit! It was very readable and believable (for a fantasy story). Of all Mr. Daley's books, this and "The Starfollowers of Coramonde" are probably my favorite that he's written. I still have to read the GammaLAW books and Tron, so my opinion *might* be subject to change, but for now, "The Doomfarers of Coramonde" and "The Starfollowers of Coramonde" remain my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars a favorite of my youth.......2002-02-27

This and Starfollowers of Coramonde (the sequel) are two of my favorite sci fi books. Daley really kept the action rolling and had some wonderful ideas, but always made sure to develop the characters. I love the characters, Gil MacDonald the disaffected Vietnam vet who gets sucked into fantasy land, Springbuck the dispossed, nearsighted king, Yardiff Bey the archvillain, etc. Well worth the price.

Communication coach Tony Jeary estimates that we make one hundred presentations every day. He tells readers, "Whether you are talking to a soccer coach or potential client, the way you present your thoughts and ideas to people have a profound effect on the shape of your life." Jeary paves the road to friendly persuasion with theory and practice in Life is a Series of Presentations.

Drawing upon established research in the psychology of influence and neuro-linguistic programming, he guides readers to define their "presentation universe" by using a "3 Dimension" (what-why-how) outline. Although Jeary introduces eight general practices of successful presenters, he shines in describing the practical nuances of presentations including how to: do homework to understand an audience, cut tensions that interfere with rapport, give an audience breathing space, handle hecklers, wrestle stage fright to the ground, and build a presentation arsenal of anecdotes.

A call to self-awareness adds depth to his strategies. For example, one insightful chapter lists eight inhibitors (such as perfectionism, desire to please, aloofness, and good student syndrome) that sabotage presentations. Another section focuses on the anatomy of how to say "thank-you"--and what it communicates about a speaker's self regard. At times, the chapters suffer from too many theories backing up Jeary's smart suggestions. But this is an insightful book on how to change someone's mind. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Good book, if you are not a professional presenter........2006-08-13

I'm not a professional presenter, but as a manager I'm constantly faced with this challenge. The book is the first one I purchase on the subject and I'm quite pleased with what I red. His tips are well presented and structured with useful real world examples. The reading is easy, logical and builds up. Overall I definitely think is worth the money. Again, it may not be material for a professional, but if you want to improve your daily presentations (very interesting point of view that this book introduces) and sail a little easier in life, definitely worth your money.

As daily presentation he points out that every time we have an important speech (and for him this may be you daily review with your peers, boss, staff, or a chat with your neighbors, wife, etc) if you spend a little time preparing for this you can gain tremendously. It makes sense, and is actually very wise. Something we take for granted and pay very little attention. I've already started to "prepare" for phone calls with my boss and staff. Runs much easier and I'm gaining trust from my staff and growing under my boss's eyes.

                              5 out of 5 stars Good read....great advice...a keeper! .......2006-05-02

I'm a pretty experienced presenter (to groups and one-on-one) and I found this book quite helpful. For anyone whose success depends on their ability to influence, you'll want to read this book. Many, many good points--especially the emphasis on preparation. Most people give lip-service to preparation, Tony lives it! The stories are great and teach a lot. It's an easy read...and was definitely worth my time.

For people looking for help (especially) with formal presentations, I'd also recommend You Are The Message, by Roger Ailes.

                              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-20

I was expecting a book on presentations and was disappointed. The book had some anecdotes about the author's life that were okay but I was left uninspired. Of course, every encounter you have in business can be judged just as if you were doing a presentation, but this needs to be the subject of a whole book? I don't think so.

Wrong book for the right person; wrong person for the right book.

4 out of 5 stars Good information but ..........2004-11-15

The author uses the book to sell us that everything we do is a presentation. He is right of course, but I like his more simple, to the point 136 Effective Presenation Tips and Inspire Any Audience. A lot of the same information in a more useable format.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-08-04

The book jacket bills author Tony Jeary as "coach to America's top CEOs." It doesn't identify them, but the author clearly has a certain bold presentational style, and stressing his identity as a expert coach could be both a strategic and an educational tactic. The book's content is evergreen, a mixture of hortatory slogans and amusing anecdotes, all designed to make you a better presenter - whether your audience is one listener or an auditorium full of people. The author's advice is, for the most part, solid, detailed, practical and conservative. Don't be too put off by a few dated examples (Bill Clinton and Gary Condit) and if you're pressed for time just read the handy lists of "very important points" that close each chapter. We assure you that you can't waste time reading this book. It's that useful.
