Book Description

arried for 20 years to the Reverend Benjamin Lynch, a handsome, ambitious minister of the prestigious Methodist church, Dean Lynch has never quite adjusted her temperament to the demands of the role of a Sunday wife. When her husband is assigned to a larger and more demanding community in the Florida panhandle, Dean becomes fast friends with Augusta Holderfield, a woman whose good looks and extravagant habits immediately entrance her. As their friendship evolves, Augusta challenges Dean to break free from her traditional role as the preacher's wife. Just as Dean is questioning everything she has always valued, a tragedy occurs, providing the catalyst for change in ways she never could have imagined.

5 out of 5 stars A good fictional read.......2007-10-06

My mother loaned me this book with that twinkle in her eye. Maybe it's because she always wanted me to marry a pastor, even though I knew I was DEFINITELY not pastor's wife material. So I read it and enjoyed the story very much. Our heroine, "Dean", is indeed married to a preacher man - the conceited and perfect kind. The kind that loves to hear himself talk. Of course, she's far from perfect....which makes her so likeable. She struggles to fit into this role he and the church have created for her, but she's torn. She's drawn to several new friends who (GASP) do not attend church. There's a little bit of everything in this story - a mystery, a tragedy, a budding romance, as well as a dying one. This is a great read that delves into the deep dark truths everyone hides from others as well as themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-08-06

This is the second of Cassandra Kings books I have read and I loved both of them, interesting characters (though not all likeable). Enjoyed the journey with Dean.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read........2007-06-13

I picked up this book by Cassandra King at a discount store for $1.99. Boy am I glad I did. I really enjoyed it. I loved watching Dean step out from under her husbands shadow. I loved reading about her friendships and relationships and her independence. A really great story. A good beach read as well.

1 out of 5 stars Tried, but couldn't continue reading.......2007-05-14

This was the first book I've picked up by this author. As hard as I tried to give the benefit of the doubt and see the point of view, it just got to be more than I could enjoy (which is why I read novels) when the flat-out name calling started in Chapter Five - "a dimwit Republican right-winger - though I guess that's redundant" and "bunch of dingbat antifeminists", plus a preacher's wife using "Jesus" as a curse word - I'd had enough. If you are a "liberal" you will probably thoroughly enjoy this book, as you are lauded throughout. If you even lean center or right, don't bother. Would have had the basis of a good story if it had done less "preaching!"

4 out of 5 stars Flawed, But Compelling.......2007-04-22

I am reading all of Cassandra King's books backwards, so going from her latest, fabulous novel to this one, her first, is truly an education.

Like all her books, The Sunday Wive is mesmerizing. It completely held my interest from start to finish. I know some people objected to the subject matter: the story of a disaffected, mistreated wife of a Methodist minister in the deep South. But really, the main character, Willodean (Dean), speaks for all bullied people everywhere, child or adult.

Profoundly greatful to her husband, much-older Ben, for rescuing her from a life of poverty and mistreatment at the hands of alcoholic parents, self-proclaimed "white trash" Dean suffers many more years at the hands of her pompous, self-righteous, supercilious, amibitious husband, Ben. AND she suffers at the hands of the "church ladies," judgmental, equally self-righteous women who find Dean lacking in whatever church her husband is placed.

Then Dean meets fabulous, irrepressible Augusta, unapproachable because she has married into a wealthy family, and the two form a madcap, wonderful friendship. Until tragedy strikes.

All of this had me glued to the pages, loving every minute. But the book could have been shorter, as it had several false endings, any of which would have been perfect, in the last 100 pages. Also, the characters are largely one-dimensional. Augusta is Auntie Mame and Anne Rivers Siddons' Nora, all wrapped up into one big overwhelming package. Ben is all bad, hateful, a parody. Dean is long suffering, can't see the nose on her face, just suffers. And so forth.

But as a first novel? Brava, Cassandra! She was, and is, a fine writer.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected hilarity.......2003-04-16

I have an old paperback of this book, first published in the '70s (?). In addition to being an informative look at radio broadcasting during the golden age, focusing especially on the soaps but also on such dramatic anthologies as Mr First Nighter, it is also quite hilarious. Ms. Higby's inside knowledge as a radio actress includes many uproarious anecdotes. Written in a light, breezy style, it is sure to entertain even those with little interest in old-time radio. Very enjoyable.

    Product Description

The story this book tells is a true and extraordinary one. Few accounts of a life so crowded, turbulent and ultimately tragic have achieved such power and pathos. The form it takes makes it rarer still. For it is related by the woman whom it is about, right up to the day before her death - and by a host of friends and associates who knew her best. Racel Roberts began putting her own story down on paper in the eighteen months before she took her own life in 1980. Much of her suicidal energy shaped her description of the multitudinous events which leave one amazed that a single individual could have seen, done, enjoyed and suffered them all. Above all, it is a human story, with a compulsiveness that comes from its unrevised account of the self-destructive force of uncontrolled talent and unrequited love. Rachel Roberts, fourth wife of actor Rex Harrison, remained obsessed with Harrison after their divorce. Egocentric and ambitious, the award-winning actress became an alcoholic, then committed suicide in 1980. PW described this book as "an expertly edited, emotionally overwhelming montage of disintegration," capturing "her bawdy behavior and flaunted sexuality, as well as her endearing humanity."

A Kiss Before Dying not only debuted the talent of best-selling novelist Ira Levin to rave reviews, it also set a new standard in the art of mystery and suspense. Now a modern classic, as gripping in its tautly plotted action as it is penetrating in its exploration of a criminal mind, it tells the shocking tale of a young man who will stop at nothing—not even murder—to get where he wants to go. For he has dreams; plans. He also has charm, good looks, sex appeal, intelligence. And he has a problem. Her name is Dorothy; she loves him, and she’s pregnant. The solution may demand desperate measures. But, then, he looks like the kind of guy who could get away with murder. Compellingly, step by determined step, the novel follows this young man in his execution of one plan he had neither dreamed nor foreseen. Nor does he foresee how inexorably he will be enmeshed in the consequences of his own extreme deed.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Lost Masterpiece of a Mystery!.......2007-06-11

This book was one of the most intreguing and memorable books I ever read. When Steven King lamented that "A Kiss Before Dying" was not read much these days, he was right to the mark. Don't miss this great murder mystery. A villan you'll hate in an irresistible story.

Be sure to read the Amazon review by Ryan Harvey "Wolf Shadow." Here's a quote from Ryan Harvey's review:

"Stephen King once commented about author Ira Levin: 'Every novel he has ever written has been a marvel of plotting. He is the Swiss watchmaker of the suspense novel; he makes what the rest of us do look like those five-dollar watches you can buy in the discount drug stores.' He went on to lament that Levin's most effective book (and his first!), 'A Kiss before Dying,' is not much read these days."

                  5 out of 5 stars Dark suspense.......2006-03-16

Ira Levin always goes to the dark heart of the human beast--and in this, his first novel, he certainly shows an understanding of his species. A twisting plot, a splash of unwholesome romance, a cunning antagonist/protagonist...it all works.

                  Thriller writer Scott Nicholson

                  4 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2006-02-16

The author sure knows how to keep things exiting! He always ends the chapter with a thrilling moment, which made me want to go on reading. I almost couldn't put the book aside, I utilized every spare hour. Her style of writing pleased me very well, it never drops off. I experienced this book as a form of acting, in writing. The characters in the story are individually exposed from the inside, in a seamless performance from one perspective to the other. Perhaps this is the secret of this books' vividness. I detected only one small thing where I was beginning to feel bored about; In the part called "Marion", we caught sight of the inside of the factory of Mr. Kingship, by looking through Buds' eyes. But in my view he was endlessly persuading about it, I got tired of it. All in all I'm very glad I've read this book. The film wasn't as good as the book itself.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of suspense...hard to put down!!!.......2006-02-09

It is a shame that there are not more books out there like this one with fast moving suspense. All I could think of while reading this book was how tight the story was. Ira Levin does not waste a single word. He gets right to the point and holds you there!! This book made me want to read everything that Ira Levin has ever written. Fantastic!! If you like great suspense, psychological thrillers and stories with a twist...this book is definately for you!

5 out of 5 stars Short and superb.......2006-01-23

Just when you think you know exactly where this little tale is headed, it veers off on one of the most unexpected (and simply perfect) twists I've read in a long time. If your looking for a suspense novel full of murder, mayhem and some great plot twists, this slim work fits the bill nicely.

This book is an excellent conclusion to the Rivalries mini-series. The plot is a "West Side Story" type thing, but with a touch of originality. I love the reality of it - the guys' macho attitudes when they're as a group etc. This book made me cry, it's written so well. The plot is believable and written with such conviction that it is all quite moving. One of the best SVH books ever.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great & Touching Book.......2000-02-17

One of my favorites, it's the kind of book that leaves you crying through out the story but smiling at the end, the author makes the characters seem very real that you can't help but feel their loss and cry their tears. Jessica and Christian would've been great together, that is, if the author hadn't gone a killed the poor guy, but i guess that's what makes SweetValley books special, they don't always have a happy ending which makes it seem more like real life. If i could give it a ten thumbs-up i would. Definitely deserves 5 stars.

                  1 out of 5 stars Great-But a TEARJERKER!!!!!!!.......1999-07-11

This book is one of the best ever so far. Its filled with emotion, love, and courage. Jess and Christian really love each other and then what a drastic ending! I was like OH MY GOSH!!!!! I cried at the end so hard when she said I won this for Christian the bravest man I ever knew. It showed how much she truly loved him. This is one of Kate's best yet, but what a TEARJERKER!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book made me cry!!!.......1998-12-05

This book is sooo sad because Jessica is in love with a guy from Palisade high and because there is a war between SVH and PH no one understood that this was a real love, no matter of war between schools. It's just like Romeo and Juliett. I cried in the end of the book, when Christian's mother came to see Jessica and when Jess won the surf competition and told everybody that she won it for Christian Gorman. I really loved that book.

                  5 out of 5 stars A really sad book.......1998-09-26

I thought it was a really sad book because Jess is in love with Christain Gorman who's from Palaside but Jess already has a boyfriend Ken Matthews and there is a war between the two schools because they keep beating Sweet Valley Gladiators by cheating. It was not only a really sad but this book made me cry because Christain dies at the end because he's trying to stop the fight between Sweet Valley and Palasides.

                                    Book Description

The Rosetta Stone is one of the world's great wonders, attracting awed pilgrims by the tens of thousands each year. This book tells the Stone's story, from its discovery by Napoleon's expedition to Egypt to its current--and controversial-- status as the single most visited object on display in the British Museum.

A pharaoh's forgotten decree, cut in granite in three scripts--Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian demotic, and ancient Greek--the Rosetta Stone promised to unlock the door to the language of ancient Egypt and its 3,000 years of civilization, if only it could be deciphered. Capturing the drama of the race to decode this key to the ancient past, John Ray traces the paths pursued by the British polymath Thomas Young and Jean-Francois Champollion, the "father of Egyptology" ultimately credited with deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. He shows how Champollion "broke the code" and explains more generally how such deciphering is done, as well as its critical role in the history of Egyptology. Concluding with a chapter on the political and cultural controversy surrounding the Stone, the book also includes an appendix with a full translation of the Stone's text.

Rich in anecdote and curious lore, The Rosetta Stone and the Rebirth of Ancient Egypt is a brilliant and frequently amusing guide to one of history's great mysteries and marvels.

I enjoyed this collection of two short stories. The first story was well detailed with many theatre references. The second story was alot of fun. The characters were a bit stereotyped, but individual enough to be interesting. The story had some nice turns in the plot. Very entertaining.

                                      Book Description

Rebirth of Wonder chronicles in prose David Johnson's migrations and adventures of discovery from Minnesota to New Mexico, Mexico, Spain, and Greece. His odysseys have taken this young son of a Norwegian-Lutheran minister to the life of a poet-teacher, making his way in the world as a father, husband, grandfather, and man of tolerance and conscience of the twentieth century.

"Memoir and poetry fuse in these delightful family history and travel sagas, revealing the poet's intense experiences on a road well traveled."--Rudolfo Anaya, author of Jemez Spring (UNM Press)

"David Johnson was my first teacher of poetry. He inspired, and gave permission to explore the territory of the soul. This collection of poems reveals the immense spirit of the poet, and these poems will in turn, inspire and give permission. . . . These poems are deft, tender, and powerful; are lights in a time of wounding. I continue to learn."--Joy Harjo, poet, musician, professor

"What a beautiful book! David Johnson celebrates the mysterious powers that drive us to seek wholeness in family life, ancestral memory, in the putting down of roots only to uproot . . . craft and contemplation come together here and the winners are readers hungry for a fuller, more beautiful life."--Demetria Martinez

Written By David M. Johnson (professor emeritus of English and creative writing, University of New Mexico) Rebirth of Wonder: Poems of Wonder is an anthology of prose and poetry drawn from Johnson's life experiences in adventures across the world, from Minnesota to Mexico, Spain, and Greece. Each prose segment or free-verse poem is brief, yet at times wryly contemplative of the characteristics of diverse locales, as well as the foibles of human nature. "Epiphany": There's not a day / I'm not amazed / by God's excess. // Yesterday / birds filled every branch / of our apple tree. / Today / a young friend / had her womb removed." From the well-meaning hubris of family members to the gentle wonder of nature to the miracle of human birth itself, Rebirth of Wonder strikes a balance between dry humor, contemplative insight, and breathtaking amazement.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A gentle man.......2007-04-01

In reading this wonderful collection I was reminded of the title of a books of poems by James Kavanaugh, "There Are Men Too Gentle To Live Among Wolves." I suspect David Johnson may be such a man. In a gentle, tolerant, graceful manner he writes of "...our journey on this earth, following dreams, meeting other travelers who have taken to the road in search of themselves." He chronicles his journeys from his Norwegian family home in Minnesota to his life in New Mexico and onward to Mexico, Spain, and Greece. He celebrates his "common life" by writing of his family and friends which he see as guideposts"...where the commonplace...is celebrated." His poem Roadkill will give the reader an idea of his humanity and grace and is worth the price of the book. The book chronicles the life experiences of an extraordinary poet-teacher, father, husband, grandfather, and man of tolerance that will resonate with readers long after they put it down...if they can. Destined to be an award winner.

                                          Book Description

Illustrated exercises for strengthening your life energy to heal yourself and others

                                          • Presents a thorough understanding of ki and teaches how to access ki through breathing

                                          • Includes a series of exercises, accompanied by photographs, for strengthening, smoothing, balancing, and transmitting ki

One morning in 1979 Mallory Fromm awoke in his Tokyo apartment with agonizing pain shooting through half of his body. A series of specialists were unable to cure the pain, which grew worse until Fromm could no longer walk. Just when he had given up all hope, a friend introduced him to an aged Japanese woman who cured him using her healing art based on ki, the life energy that animates the entire universe, and that flows through each and every one of us.

The Book of Ki presents you with a thorough understanding of what ki is, then teaches you how to access your ki. A series of exercises teaches you how to strengthen, smooth, and balance your ki, and shows you how to transmit your ki to heal yourself and others. Photographs accompanying each exercise clearly show you where to position your hands to maximize the flow of ki in the body.

The Book of Ki also tells the story of Kayoko Matsuura, the brilliant healer who saved Mallory Fromm and countless others. It is an in-depth and moving account of a woman whose simple but revolutionary healing art the West is only now ready to understand.

I read this book and was able to utilize the techniques to generate Ki. It was amazing to see what a positive impact this energy can have on the body. I have experienced the healing power of this myself and have seen it work on others who I have Ki-ed. Anyone who is open to exploring alternative strategies to health can benefit from reading this book.

                                          1 out of 5 stars Very Silly.......2005-09-16

The book starts with a sad story of how sick the author was until he found a Ki master who turned his life around. This seems to be a standard story in these types of books. Fromm them follows this with a variety of odd exercises and techniques which don't work. Even if you believe that this stuff works the idea that you would just buy this rather slim book and then be able to heal yourself and others is ridiculous. I don't know why the other reviewers rated this book so highly unless they have something to lose by telling the truth.

4 out of 5 stars The Book of (Rei)ki.......2001-04-14

This is a very enjoyable book; it's weird the author expounded on the subject for xxx pages without mentioning Reiki, which is what his doctor was practicing.

Reiki is an age-old healing technique "rediscovered' in the 19th c. by a Japanese scholar.

Anyway, Dr. Fromm, nice book, with great wry commentary and humor throughout on the stages of healing, plus a moving ending. But as an academic, you could tip your hat toward the sources of the medicine your doctor used, and give the reader some context for the ancient and modern-day practices of Ki healing, some of which are known today as Reiki. //Thanks for exercising my brain. :)

5 out of 5 stars The Book of Ki.......2001-02-28

Many books on this subject are often complex, lengthy and unreadable or at the other end of the spectrum, characterized by odd stick figure drawings, terse, inadequate and generally undecipherable descriptions. The Book of Ki appropriately, strikes a harmonious balance between these two extremes.

By combining the exercise and treatment section with the very well written and fascinating narrative description of his personal experiences with Mrs. Matsuura (the Japanese healer who inspired the author to learn these techniques) Mallory Fromm has produced a book that is informative, interesting and easy to read.

If you are interested in or open to the broad possibilities of Ki (or Chi) then you should read this book (incidentally this is type of Ki healing is NOT, nor is it based on, Reiki).

Also having personally benefited from the Ki workshops and treatments offered by Mallory and Therese Baxter at the SIKE institute amd Esalen, I would recommend them to anyone with an interest or need for this type of non-manipulative and non-invasive healing.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2001-01-31

This is an excellent book on ki. Lots of step by step exercises focussed on health. I also liked reading the story about how the author first learned of ki and was healed. If youre interested in Ki id suggest this book as well as books on Aikido (the art of peace)... a non-violent Japanese martial art based on ki which the author Mallory Fromm is a teacher of. Very good book!
