Book Description

Nothing ever goes right for Eloise. The day she wears her new suede boots, it rains. When the subway stops short, she's the one thrown into some stranger's lap. And she's had her share of misfortune in the way of love. So, after deciding that romantic heroes must be a thing of the past, Eloise is ready for a fresh start.

Setting off for England, Eloise is determined to finish her dissertation on two spies, the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. But what she discovers is something historians have missed: the secret history of the Pink Carnation-the most elusive spy of all time. As she works to unmask this obscure spy, Eloise has more and more questions. Like, how did the Pink Carnation save England from Napoleon? What became of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian? And will Eloise Kelly escape her bad luck and find a living, breathing hero of her own?

"Deciding that true romantic heroes are a thing of the past, Eloise Kelly, an intelligent American who always manages to wear her Jimmy Choo suede boots on the day it rains, leaves Harvard's Widener Library bound for England to finish her dissertation on the dashing pair of spies the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. What she discovers is something the finest historians have missed: a secret history that begins with a letter dated 1803. Eloise has found the secret history of the Pink Carnation-the most elusive spy of all time, the spy who single-handedly saved England from Napoleon's invasion. The Secret History of the Pink Carnation, a wildly imaginative and highly adventurous debut, opens with the story of a modern-day heroine but soon becomes a book within a book. Eloise Kelly settles in to read the secret history hoping to unmask the Pink Carnation's identity, but before she can make this discovery, she uncovers a passionate romance within the pages of the secret history that almost threw off the course of world events. How did the Pink Carnation save England? What became of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian? And will Eloise Kelly find a hero of her own?"

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-09-27

This was a wonderful book that I absolutely couldn't put down. The characters were fun and the plot was wonderful. I gave it and the sequel to my best friend who also loved them. Can't wait for the next two!

4 out of 5 stars good read--page turner.......2007-09-26

My sister-in-law gave me this book to read while we are at the beach, and I could not put it down.

Basically the book is split into two parts: In present day time, Eloise Kelly is trying to complete a dissertation on the spies the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. She also wants to uncover truth about one spy who had never been unmasked, the Pink Carnation. As Eloise reads the papers/diaries/letters/etc. of these men, we are taken back in time so we can experience everything first-hand.

Luckily, I had not read anything about the book before I started it, so I did not have any preconceived ideas about the book. I did not expect it to be a fully historical book about the Scarlet Pimpernel or that time period, and thank goodness it wasn't. Wouldn't that have been boring! Instead we have romance, danger, espionage, adventure, and more. As stated in the title, it was definitely a page turner (as were her second and third books in this series--I am eagerly awaiting the fourth). So, if you want boring historical fiction, read something else, but if you want adventure, read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Willig is a Bad Magician.......2007-09-04

The concept is interesting, I was hoping that it'd be a fun read. My issue is with the way Willig writes. It reminds me of a little girl playing dress-up. You can see the literary devices and imagery she attempts to use, but it's used so clumsily that instead of being caught in the story the reader can't help but notice what she's doing. The characters are shallow stereotypes, and the dialogue is comically bad. Her prose has the subtlety of a chimp banging two rocks together.
I can't mix enough metaphors to describe my dislike for her work.
To illustrate her prose: "Richard felt like a hound eager to bounce off after a fox. Of course, he had better make jolly sure first that it was a fox, and not just a rabbit, or a bunch of waving leaves. Or something like that. Richard rapidly abandoned the metaphor." (pg. 129)
Too bad Willig didn't abandon that passage before writing it down. I hope the previous passage is self-explanatory. And yes, I am ashamed to have pressed on to page 129 of this book.
I was also embarassed to see that this was called "chick lit"...what does the quality of this book say for women's lit in general, even if it is supposed to be a fanciful novel, by being called "chick lit" it reflects on women's writing as a whole. Why isn't poorly written "men's" lit called "dude lit"?
That being said, the book is barely readable, and Willig never succeeds in drawing you in. If I could change my rating, I would give it one star. Consider all the stereotypes halfway into the first chapter and it's obvious who the Pink Carnation is and who falls in love with whom.

3 out of 5 stars Fun & Quirky & Dashing.......2007-09-01

Ok, I am a big fan of history tomes, historical fiction, historical romances ~~ anything that smacks of history, I want to read it. I cannot remember exactly how that love got started, but it's there and it's a vital part of what I read. This book ~~ while flawed ~~ is fun, dashing and quirky. I am not sure if it is historically accurate since I am not familiar with that time period ~~ but it definitely got me interested now and it will propel me into that direction.

Another thing that I love is two stories in one book. There is Eloise, a Harvard graduate student in London to complete her thesis on the two famous spies that saved England from France. She wanted to find out more about the elusive Pink Carnation and only one family has the information ~~ the descendents of the Purple Gentian, who did rescue England from the clutches of Bonaparte. Eloise finds the manuscripts and buries herself into the story of Amy Balacourt, a transplant from the French Revolution ~~ who lost her father and mother within a year. Amy desires nothing more than to avenge her father's death (who was beheaded ~~ her mom died of heartbreak).

Amy gets a chance to visit her brother who somehow survived. She brings along her cousin Jane and their chaperone, Miss Gwen, a formidable woman. The three of them were thrown together with Richard Selliwick, whom they thought was a traitor to their country because he is the director of Antiquities under Napoleon's employ. Amy wanted to join the Purple Gentian's league and save England.

It is a mixture of romance, intrigue with historical facts thrown in. It's cute. It's funny in spots. It's romantic. But the world's greatest book, it is not. One reason, the author tends to leave certain thoughts trailing off without coming to a reasonable conclusion. Secondly, there are parts of the book where it felt rushed and under-written. Thirdly, what started out to be an intrigue turned into a steaming ripping of the bodice romance ~~ which was not what I expected. It's almost if she's trying too hard to please too many types of readers at once.

It is a fun book. It is definitely one that I would share with friends simply because it's cute. It's perfect for those last days on the beach or on the long plane ride during the upcoming holiday season. If you are expecting a historical tome, this book is not for you. If you just want to read something fun and quirky with a little bit of dash thrown in, this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good Balance of Romance, Mystery and History.......2007-08-29

Lauren Willig is all about mixing the genres on mystery, historical fiction and romance. I actually read the second book (The Masque of the Black Tulip) first and only liked it so-so. However, this first one is much better. The author makes the mixing of genres work in this book, where she didn't in the other. The romance wasn't too ridiculous, the characters fun and likable, the historical context appropriate (though ONLY the context is non-fiction, the story is entirely made up) and the mystery remain an undercurrent in the book without the other pieces taking over. Willig remembers each piece of book (romance, mystery and history) and balances them well.

While history has unmasked the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian, mystery still surrounds another lesser-known hero, the Pink Carnation. In this refreshing historical romp--strong on history with a healthy dollop of romance--Eloise Kelly, 21st-century Ph.D. candidate, sets about to reveal the true identity of that romantic figure. Through dogged determination, Eloise gains access to a treasure trove of letters and diaries. Narrator Kate Reading slips seamlessly between the diction of present and past. Reading's accomplished voicing, particularly in the novel-within-a-novel, turns the streets of 1890s Paris rank with unimaginable muck, while Josephine's salons glitter with pomp. Reading handles secret assignations, gambling hells, gentlemen's clubs, passionate encounters, torture chambers, and slimy villains with her usual expertise, adding luster to author Lauren Willig's imaginative take on the Napoleonic Era. In the foothills of Pasadena, Mas Arai is just another Japanese-American gardener, his lawnmower blades clean and sharp, his truck carefully tuned. But while Mas keeps lawns neatly trimmed, his own life has gone to seed. His wife is dead. And his livelihood is falling into the hands of the men he once hired by the day. For Mas, a life of sin is catching up to him. And now bachi—the spirit of retribution—is knocking on his door.

It begins when a stranger comes around, asking questions about a nurseryman who once lived in Hiroshima, a man known as Joji Haneda. By the end of the summer, Joji will be dead and Mas’s own life will be in danger. For while Mas was building a life on the edge of the American dream, he has kept powerful secrets: about three friends long ago, about two lives entwined, and about what really happened when the bomb fell on Hiroshima in August 1945.

A spellbinding mystery played out from war-torn Japan to the rich tidewaters of L.A.’s multicultural landscape, this stunning debut novel weaves a powerful tale of family, loyalty, and the price of both survival and forgiveness.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-10-04

For anyone with an interest in the family relationships between Japanese in America and those in Japan during WW II, a must read. The history is accurate, settings are excellent and the ensuing story is spell-binding.

The mystery is well spun as the various characters are examined - good suspense.

There are enough unravelled family threads for another book - which I have already purchased and will read it soon.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mystery with little known Japanese-American history as backdrop.......2006-07-11

Being a Japanese-American (sansei from the Midwest), I really felt that the characters rang true - no "model minority" stereotypes. Just ordinary people, some good, some bad, caught up in a situation (the mystery) that doesn't get fully explained until the end. If you're looking for a hard-boiled mystery, this might not be your cup of tea. The characters and their background is what stands out. The protoganist is a kibei (American-born but raised in Japan - most speak accented English) who lived through the A-bomb blast in Hiroshima. The mystery involves events that occurred back then.
This book was a quick and enjoyable read and I look forward to her next book.

3 out of 5 stars Sins of the Past.......2006-05-11

For fifty years, Japanese American Mas Arai has built a life for himself and his family in Pasadena. Since he works as a gardener, it hasn't been a comfortable life, but they have survived. Now he is a widower and his daughter has moved to New York. Mas is enjoying the quiet his life has become.

All that is shattered one June afternoon. Mas enters one of his favorite haunts, Tanaka's Lawnmower Shop, to find a stranger asking around about Joji Haneda. The man claims to be a private investigator. Mas tells him nothing, but the encounter shakes him to his core.

Mas hasn't had any contact with Joji in years. Now the owner of a nursery in Ventura, the two men used to be friends. But that was in Hiroshima during World War II. And the two share a secret from the dropping of the atomic bomb that Mas would prefer to stay hidden.

Still, the encounter makes Mas start working on looking Joji up himself. Unfortunately, he isn't the only one. A young reporter with wild hair from Japan is also asking around. And someone doesn't want Mas poking around any more. Why the sudden interest in Joji?

I have heard great things about the novel. Much of the praise is well deserved. The book paints an interesting picture of the Japanese American sub-culture as well as life in Japan during World War II. History buffs will certainly enjoy that aspect of the book.

While not the traditional murder and three suspects I normally read, the book is well plotted. The story starts strongly and moves along rapidly to its climax. Only the last few pages of wrap up drag a little. Still this is a minor complaint.

Mas is a well drawn character. It was easy to picture this Hiroshima survivor as a real person. While he had some obvious faults, he was still likeable. I kept reading because I cared about what happened to him. The story is told third person from his point of view, and the narration takes on a haunting noir quality right from the start.

So why the three stars? Because it was almost impossible to get into the book. The conversations were peppered with Japanese words. I could usually figure them out from the context, but sometimes I couldn't. Additionally, in an effort to make the dialog have an authentic dialect, the words were often purposefully misspelled. Not only did they not help me picture how the characters talked, but I had a very hard time following what they were saying sometimes. Finally, the characters names were foreign. While this seems obvious, several of the characters names were so similar I had a hard time keeping them straight. I realize this last one is more my problem then the authors, still all three of these kept me from getting truly engrossed in the tale. Instead of inviting me into a culture I know nothing about, they served to make me feel like an outsider. Honestly, I almost put the book down at one point.

I'm glad I persisted. This book has an interesting tale with believable characters worth reading about. The flaws are strong enough to make me only give it a hesitant recommendation, however.

5 out of 5 stars Strangers in a Strange Land.......2006-02-22

Naomi Hirahara is a talented writer and a gifted storyteller. She draws you into a world you might think you knew but that feels foreign from the viewpoint of the main characters. Japanese gardeners have been so commonplace, yet very uncommon in American society. To see this country through their eyes is very humbling. This story makes you realize what courage and hard work it takes to make it here as someone perceived as "different." The author lets us glimpse the interesting personalities of her characters and how these protagonists figure out ways to survive together. The story is suspenseful with full character development. And the praise one feels for the main characters evolves through subtle description. At the end of the story your heart is touched by poignant acts of friendship and gentle charm.

3 out of 5 stars Good first try.......2005-09-01

This is the first mystery novel by Naomi Hirahara, featuring Mas Arai, a Japanese American gardener in Southern California. Mas is a kibei, i.e. an American-born Japanese who returned to Japan and spent most of his formative years there. Mas bears the terrible trauma of WW2 in Japan and particularly of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, where his family had relocated. Fifty years later, Mas has little to show for himself. He's a lonely and bitter man, that has survived his wife and is estranged from his only daughter, while his gardening business is wilting. The novel's mystery is connected to his traumatic Hiroshima past, but it is more interesting for the range of characters Hirahara can command (Hiroshima survivors, No-No boys, Sansei civil-rights lawyers), and for the still little-known history of the Japanese American community, than for its suspense. It's a good first try. We'll just have to wait and see what she writes next.

Aided by the loyalty of Bedivere, Gareth, Lancelot, and others from Arthur's reign, she works toward settling her uneasy nation. But when faced with unthinkable treachery, Guinevere is swept into a life she never understood, driven to the depths of servitude to a bold Saxon who is unaware of her true identity. Much like Arthur, he is an idyllic dreamer with a magnificent mind. With him, she discovers more of humanity than she ever imagined! And we see Guinevere for all she is: brilliant leader, shrewd schemer, compassionate ruler, heartless tyrant, lover, warrior, slave--and always, always a Queen.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and unique portrayal of Guinevere!.......2006-02-11

A few months ago, I read a novel called Queen of Camelot by Nancy Mckenzie, a recreation of the King Arthur story that centers on Guinevere. I thought that the retelling was very interesting and showed Guinevere as a flesh and blood, three-dimensional, kind woman and not the treacherous, adulteress that is shown in the original story. Beloved Exile, however, shows quite a different take on Guinevere, one of an ambitious, treacherous woman that would do anything for survival and to rule as queen with results as interesting as the one in Queen of Camelot. Guinevere is the Medieval/fantasy Scarlett O'Hara in this retelling. After King Arthur dies, Guinevere, along with Lancelot and Gareth, tries to bring Camelot to its previous glory, but things don't turn out that way, to say the least. Instead, she becomes a Saxon slave, and her struggles has just begun. But Guinevere is an intelligent, scheming woman, and she will do just about anything to reign again. There are various twists throughout the novel.

Beloved Exile takes quite a departure from the original King Arthur tale and the results are incredible. Parke Godwin gives Guinevere the sort of depth and layers that is absent in King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. And the anti-heroine here is also a departure from Queen of Camelot. Both of these novels show a very interesting portrayal of Queen Guinevere in very different ways and I cannot decide which one is the best one of the two. In this adaptation, Guinevere is an unsympathetic protagonist, but has enough complexity to make her compelling at the same time. That is why I compare her to Scarlett O'Hara, for she made me feel the same way when I read Gone with the Wind. This Guinevere is very interesting indeed. I just loved the complexity and many dimensions of this character. Mr. Godwin has created a wonderful and unique portrayal of this classic character. And he added gothic undertones to boot! I cannot recommend this gem enough!

4 out of 5 stars Gritty and realistic.......2000-02-16

More historical fiction than fantasy, you will not find any magic swords or sorcery in this gritty and realistic story of Guenevere and Britian after the death of Arthur. When the story begins, Guenevere is already middle aged, and Britian is on the brink of chaos. As the story progresses we learn of the maturing of Guenevere as a person and as a queen.

The novel starts off fast and furious with battles and betrayals. Then it settles down into a serious character study as it builds towards a strong and satisfying climax. Sometimes slow, but always interesting, this was worthwhile reading.

                5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for a non-weepy, finally grown-up Guinevere!.......1999-08-24

Traditional versions of the Arthur myth focus mainly on the men. Other versions like Mists of Avalon, which I enjoy immensely, focus women characters and not much, really, on the weepy, very Christian Guinevere.

Beloved Exile is a smashing alternate view of the possibilities, given the times. Guinevere in this version is not construed as a saint, a hystrionic weeper, nor is she totally lovable, but is very human. She is a strong, unforgettable character.

                Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and engrossing.......1999-06-28

This is my favorite depiction of Guinevere. Godwin portrays her as a powerful woman whose strengths (as is often the case) are also her weaknesses--and her undoing. Godwin's Guinevere is frequently hard to sympathize with, but she isn't hard to understand. I'm impressed with how dramatically (but believably) her character changes and grows between Firelord and this book. Note: Read this book carefully, and you'll notice that a character from Firelord, so minor that she had neither name or dialogue, is crucial to the events and attitudes in Beloved Exile.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best portraits of Guinevere.......1998-09-28

This is a worthy sequel to the exciting "Firelord." It tells the story of the rest of Guinevere's life after Arthur's death, and she is even more of a vivid and strong personality than she was in that enthralling novel. Godwin's account of her captivity as a Saxon slave, and her adaptation to that way of life, is purely imaginative, but who could mind? It relates a sensitive and entertaining account of how this proud queen grows to maturity in her adjustment to a jarring change in her fortunes. Guinevere has never seemed more real, alive and captivating than in these pages. You can well believe that a woman this remarkable has captured popular imagination for 1500 years. Someone, please--put this book back into print! It deserves it.

                2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......1999-06-22

I was disappointed with this fiction attempt by Agnes Keith. Sexually suggestive at times, hard to separate her own life story from this made-up heroine. Adds more insight to the Indonesian area, but not anything I wanted more details about.

I recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed or thinks they may have MVP. Lyn Fredrickson takes a rational approach and gives practical, medically sound advice for the person with MVP. After reading this book, I knew I was not dying, and I wasn't crazy. Ms. Fredrickson assured me my symptoms were real, and gave me hope for a life unchained from those symptoms. Don't pay any attention to the reader from State College, PA. They obviously did not read this book. Judge for yourself!

                                4 out of 5 stars solid book.......2001-11-19

First and only book on MVP I have read. Read it while my heart was jumping out of my chest, on the road 2,400 miles from home. Have suffered "palpitations" for 20 years that doctors never have diagnosed. This book just hit home with things I have been feeling for a very long time. Turns out my mother has MVP. I feel this book helped me very much to feel better about what I "may" have. It gave me a lot of useful info on what to do. It is a basic AMA approach and discourse.

this book pokes fun at people with MVP and MVPS. the author spends too much time on her so called "neuroses" in people with MVP and MVPS. after reading this book i am convinced that the author wrote it only to convince people with MVP and MVPS that their physical condition is basically all in their head. this is just another book that victimizes the victom of a difficult to deal with medical disorder. also, book is very out dated, and very much the opinion of the author not at all any real medicine in this book. spend some more money on a more recent book on MVP and MVPS.

1 out of 5 stars more psycho-bable than anything else!.......2000-09-04

This book loves to bash those suffering from MVP. After reading this book i am convinced that the author believes people with MVP are neurotic, immature and in need of therapy for the cardiac condition! Don't waste your money unless you want a laugh as this book is a joke.
