Randy White's mysteries are tailor-made for fans who've exhausted the novels of the late John D. MacDonald. White's series hero, Doc Ford, a marine biologist whose résumé includes a Vietnam-era stint with the Special Forces, is a somewhat cynical philosopher whose toughness masks a tender heart; he's a worthy successor to Travis McGee. In this fast-paced, well-written thriller, a nearly forgotten promise to a long-dead comrade gets Doc involved in a daughter's search for her mother. Gail Richardson's house is empty, and so are her bank accounts. Her daughter Amanda is sure that Gail's being held against her will by her would-be protector, Jackie Merlot, a mysterious man whose connections reach deep into Central and South America. The trail leads from Florida to Colombia and then to Panama, site of a private, heavily guarded retreat catering to the perverse tastes of the wealthy and powerful. Getting in takes all Doc's skill and cunning. Getting out is another matter entirely, as he learns with the help of a few of Bobby Richardson's old Vietnam buddies who turn up in the proverbial nick of time. The denouement is full of surprises, including one that even the most discerning reader won't see coming. The writing is swift, deft, and full of the crunchy nuggets of world-weary wisdom that admirers of the MacDonald genre loved and that White's growing number of devoted readers have come to expect. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Readers who still yearn for Travis McGee and wish the Busted Flush wasn't in permanent dry dock should hook up with Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford--a Travis McGee for The '90s. (The Orlando Sentinel). Randy Wayne White continues to produce the kind of novel that makes The Denver Post say, We'll always drop anything to read a new Randy Wayne White novel, and be glad we did. In The Mangrove Coast, the daughter of a dead war buddy calls Ford in distress. If you're ever really in trouble, his friend had written her, Ford's the one you can trust. And trouble is what she's got. Her mother's disappeared in Mexico without a trace, in the company of an unsavory companion, and her money's gone, too. Doc agrees to help, and finds himself in Baja, on the trail of a man more genuinely evil than any he has ever encountered. There's more to it than that, though--a third man whose shadowy presence brings death in its wake. For Doc, the mystery--and the danger--only deepens. In fact, solving the puzzle may turn out to be the most perilous thing of all. Filled with crackling prose and atmosphere, and some of the best characters in contemporary suspense, The Mangrove Coast is a triumph of inventive storytelling.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Man's Novel Through and Through.......2007-06-15

Doc Ford is up to more adventures and a lifestyle that appeals to men. I mean, he's not married, he lives in the stilt house in Florida, has a lot of friends (some quirky like Tomlinson, a wonderful character), and he has a lot of lady friends. Doc Ford's background is mirky, a lot of it spent on secret missions for a CIA type of organization. The average man will get lost most of White's novels, sailing away with him on some grand adverture.

I've enjoyed all of Randy Wayne White's novels. If you're not in the mood to read, then get them on CD. Ron McLarty does a super job with Tomlinson's voice! He makes him sound like Jack Nicholson--very funny. Tomlinson is a strung-out hippy type, whose ramblings contain surprising bits of wisdom. A very compelling character and friend of Doc Ford.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2006-11-03

Love these Doc Ford stories-RWW gets better and better, but the older novels are every bit as good as the new.

5 out of 5 stars A Sucker for a Damsel in Distress.......2004-03-07

Doc Ford is Marion Ford, Ph.D., a Harrison Ford type marine biologist who lives alone in a stilt cabin on Sanibel Island. Ford is footloose and fancy free until - in each book - his peace and tranquillity is disturbed by a very attractive damsel in distress.

On and off again Ford has been haunted by the death of spook pal Bobby Richardson, who died in an explosion in Cambodia during the post-Vietnam War days. It was a meaningless tragedy, the result of a land mine that destroyed a good friend and left a beautiful wife and a child to fend for themselves back home.

When the grown-up daughter, twenty-five-year-old Amanda, contacts Ford, quoting a letter from her father in which he said Ford would always be there in an emergency, Ford can hardly turn her away. He couldn't anyway, she's a damsel in distress, after all.

Amada's mother, Gail Richardson Calloway, has been deserted by her second husband and gone off to Colombia, apparently but unbelievably of her own free will, with a very unsavory character, Then second husband, Frank Calloway, is found dead soon after her disappearance and now Gail's bank accounts are being methodically depleted. Amanda wants Ford to help search for her mother and to bring her back home.

Ford flies off to Colombia to find Bobby's widow, then tracks and follows her to Panama. Along the way he manages to get into fights to the death with some pretty tough dudes in this action-packed thriller that I simply couldn't get enough off. At times the story seemed a bit of a clichè, but you what, it's been over a week since I finished the book and I'm still thinking about it. That really says something about a story.

3 out of 5 stars Far from his Best.......2001-07-19

I'm a big fan of Doc Ford, but this installment made me realize that he has his down days (and books). It took White 2/3 of the book to really get cranking and then it seemed like he was making up for lost time. Jackie Merlot was so despicable that it wasn't a question of "Will he die?" but "How?" I forgave the credibility-stretched ending because I was glad to at least resolve some of the loose strings.

Randy Wayne White has been compared favorably to John D. MacDonald (and deserves to be) but the plot for "Mangrove Coast" treads a little TOO close to a former Travis McGee novel, "The Deep Blue Empty." Both novels had a way of meandering along slowly to a final, violent conclusion.

I noticed that one of the reviews for this book's follow-up, "Shark River," accused it of being too action-packed. I would imagine that the readers' reactions to this book are the reason why.

Keep up the GOOD work, Mr. White!

4 out of 5 stars Mangrove Coast.......2001-03-14

O.K. the stories over. The mystery is solved. The last chapter solves the convoluted plot through the jungles of the Everglades,Columbia and Panama. It all comes together, It's midnight and we can end the suspense and finally go to bed. Why read the epilogue, right? Why read that they all lived happily ever after? Wrong. White leaves the last agonizing twist to the very last paragraph of the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Not All Wesrern.......2003-05-02

This book contains many different kinds of stories and at first as I picked up the book and saw the contents only contained one western story, oooh, I might not like this collection. But being adventerous, I said to myself it's only one book. So I bought it and thoroughly enjoyed every story without question.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Nine Stories.......2003-02-06

The nince uncollected stories here range from L'Amour's earliest days as a writer to his latest, but are linked by protagonists seeking justice. While L'Amour is most famous for his Westerns, most of these stories draw upon his own life experiences for their setting and subjects. L'Amour was a boxer, winning over 50 bouts, and in "Fighters Should Be Hungry" he presents the classic tale of a hungry kid seeking to avenge his father's death. Boxing surfaces again in the equally formulaic "The Rounds Don't Matter." I don't know that he was ever a detective, but he's not much of a detective writer, based on the two weak pulp stories here, "The Unexpected Corprse" and "Time of Teror." For the Western fans, there's a quite nice little tale of outlaws and gold, called "The Secret of Silver Springs." And for the checkers fans there's a brief little throwaway tale about a champion seaman checker player called "It's Your Move." I have to confess that "The Cross and the Candle" made such a small impression that I have no idea what it was about! The two best stories derive their quality from L'Amour's travels. "Off the Mangrove Coast" is about a villanous quarter of sailors seeking gold lost at sea. It's a tense, gripping story with a great fight scene. The longest and best story is "The Diamond of Jeru", about an expatriate American on Borneo who dreams of making a big diamond score so he go back home. When an American couple hire him to take them upriver, it turns into Deliverance meets The Headhunters. It's a great old-fashioned adventure tale that was recently made into a cable movie. All in all, a mixed bag with two gems and a few lumps of coal.

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment for a small price.......2002-11-22

I've always been a fan of Louis Lamour's western's but this book is an excellent example of just how great a writer he was. Using his life experiences Mr. Lamour paints a vivid and entertaining picture in each of the short stories included in this compilation. And only one of them is set in the western genre. A great read for any fan of his or anyone who loves short stories.

5 out of 5 stars What It Feel Like To Be A Man............2001-08-15

....sometimes I like my stories written straight ahead with no deep analysis required. And easy to read. And in small bites.

These are great tales of pirates and noire detectives and exotic lands and plenty of fights and murder. No deep analysis required. Straight ahead storytelling from one of the best. The best five bucks I spent all summer...

5 out of 5 stars Fine stories of courage and adventure.......2000-06-29

Louis L'Amour was one of the great writers of modern times, and he is sorely missed by everyone that loves a good story. This book is one of the best collections of his short stories, some of them never before published. His books and stories are often filled with a deep sense of justice, and the ultimate triumph of all that is right. The stories in "Off The Mangrove Coast", follow that pattern. There is the story of a boxer, seeking justice for the cruel death of his father. In another story a man goes out into the jungles of Borneo, trying to rescue some tourists from murderers and headhunters. There is a story about a true friendship that forms during a perilous journey on the sea, in search of treasure. There are nine stories included in this book. These are stories about the heart of adventure and courage, and the surprising good that can sometimes be found in very unexpected places. Louis L'Amour wanted to be remembered as a good storyteller, and in this and so many of his other books that wish has always been fulfilled.

4 out of 5 stars The Mangrove Coast: History of Southwest Florida.......2005-04-04

This book, originally published in 1942 by Karl Bickel, gives a history of the west coast of Florida. It begins with the Indians prior to the Spanish invasion. The story continues up to the times of World War II and the presence of tourism as a major industry.

Bickel was a newspaper man, and displays an adeptness for story-telling in this book. The stories are colorful recollections of events and people from Pensacola to the Everglades.

Beginning chronologically with the two Indian tribes, Timucans and Caloossa, Bickel paints a picture of their life and trading habits. He includes descriptions of Indian mounds still accessible today on Weedin's Island and Terra Ceia.

Following the Indian civilization, Bickel explores the myths and legends of Ponce de Leon and DeSoto on Florida.

More engaging than the pirate stories of Jose Gaspar, are the true-life details of Johnny Gomez, who lived to be 119 years old. Gomez's tall tales of pirates and buried treasure were never proven to be true. But these stories lighted the imaginations of many tourists passing through the area.

Sadly, other stories surrounding slave traders and the Seminole wars prove painfully true.

In addition to stories on the people of Florida, Bickel includes nature scenes such as a fight between a black snake and a rattler. He also discusses difference in personaltiy between alligators and crocodiles. (Yes, there are crocodiles in Florida.)

Bickel provides humorous and educational narration of the local lore in and around the West Coast of Florida. While not a book for everyone, it does provide a historical perspective on Florida which is seldom seen today.

This is one of many mangas i've read and enjoyed. But it's a bit of a cliffy. Ending with to be contined next volume.....? All in all i really enjoyed this manga. Clay finally faces facts is he really made for being a candidate? Things come to terms in this emotion packed volume will Zero get to say goodbye? And will this be the last time they meet? I don't know but i can't wait to find out in the next volume of candidate for goddess.

1 out of 5 stars The title is not true to the book.......2007-06-27

Of all the allergy cookbooks that I've purchased (and I've purchased a few), this is the worse! The title says "what to eat when you can't eat anything", and yet the recipes uses all the main allergens as basic ingredients, not solving my problem. I do not recommend it. It's really a waste of time and money...

                5 out of 5 stars Proud Mama!.......2006-07-14

Hi guys! These two wonderful young authors are my two wonderful young adult children and What To Eat's whole philosophy is to try and get you back eating scrumptious food and NOT stuck in the I can't eat anything ever again mode. We were there, but we found when we switched to ALL organic foods that many of the allergic problems just fell away. But you have to be ruthless - no processed foods, no junk foods,no pesticde laden foods, no yeast and no sugar. What To Eat is all about getting back to a healthy, old-fashioned, clean and simple diet. We hope you seriously enjoy! Proud Mama, Rosita

2 out of 5 stars Not a great book for coeliacs.......2006-03-26

I found this book of little use for my 9 year old coeliac son. very little information about coeliac disease

3 out of 5 stars not exactly what I was looking for.......2006-02-21

It's full of tasty looking recipes, but the foods I have had to eliminate from my diet aren't the most common. It's unfortuante not being able to choose much from the book of what to eat when you can't eat anything!
It's interesting reading about the authors' story and their tips on leading a green life.
