Better Than Philippa.......2007-08-21
This first few chapters of this book was a bit boring but it got better when Baen and Elizabeth became close. I loved reading about them. Elizabeth was a lot more likable than Philippa.
I felt a little sad near the end of this book, because, I knew it was the last one in the series. The Friarsgate series is not as good as the Skye O'Malley series but I did like the first two books in this series very much. Rosamund and Logan made the first two books enjoyable. If they had been featured a lot more in this book and in 'Philippa', I think the Friarsgate series would have been almost as good as the Skye O'Malley series.
I wanted to read more about Rosamund and Logan but I still enjoyed this book.
Boring.......2007-02-15
This is the final installment in the Friarsgate series. It tells the story of Elizabeth Meredith, Rosamund's youngest daughter, who was made heiress to the estate, after her eldest sister, Philippa, renounced it.
The novel begins with Elizabeth and Rosamund arguing on the subject of a husband for Elizabeth. Elizabeth agrees to go to court, if her Uncle Tom, who had also taken her older sisters, agrees to accompany her. At court, she befriends the exotic new-comer Anne Boleyn.
This book is definitely not up to par with Small's earlier works. It is quite repetitive. They dwell on how Elizabeth ended up in charge of Friarsgate, how she doesn't want to go to court and belongs on her estates, "don't call me Bessie," and so on. It also just drags. It takes forever to her to get to court, and when she does, she leaves right away because she "doesn't belong there." Then it is back to Friarsgate for more of the same "I need someone who loves Friarsgate as I do." There are not very many sex scenes, as Elizabeth and her hero don't consummate their relationship until about 3/4 of the way though the book. The entire book is predictable and there are no plot twists at all.
I did like the description of Anne Boleyn's coronation, as well as any interaction with the "real" people from history, as I do with many of Small's novels. I enjoy reading on how she perceives these people and what types of personalities she gives them. Unfortunately, since Elizabeth's time at court was limited, there wasn't much incorporation of them in the entire novel.
I still read Small's works, mostly out of habit now, I think. But if you want a really good romance with more interesting plot lines and characters, check out her earlier works, like the Skye O'Malley series, or the Leslie novels (The Kadin, Love Wild and Fair, etc).
fourth and final book in the Friarsgate Inheritance series .......2007-01-27
Entrusted with the running of Friarsgate at the tender age of fourteen, Elizabeth Meredith has grown up a country lass with no interests beyond her precious Friarsgate and the sheep and wool her estate is well known for. Now twenty-one years old, Elizabeth must marry in order to provide the estate with an heir, and Elizabeth has no intention of marrying just so some male can take over her precious Friarsgate.
Baen MacColl started life out on the wrong side of the blankets. While he knows who his father is now and is even accepted and loved by his father and his family, he's still illegitimate and as such owes everything he has to his father and has nothing to offer a wife.
Rosamund, Elizabeth's mother insists that Elizabeth must go to court to find herself a husband. Friarsgate requires an heir and in order to do that duty she first needs a husband. Since Elizabeth's elder sister, Philippa is a creature of the court, Rosamund is determined for Elizabeth to go to her. Phillipa and Elizabeth do not get along and so Elizabeth counters with the request that Uncle Tom accompany her and she'll go quietly. Otherwise, every eligible that Phillipa brings to her presence, Elizabeth swears she will "belch, fart, speak with a broad North Country accent, and make herself generally undesirable." Uncle Tom agrees to accompany her and arrives at Friarsgate to ready her for the pomp and circumstance that the court would expect of a young lady in their midst. Both Uncle Tom and Elizabeth are aware that this trip to court is a fools' errand, none of the men attending court will be suitable. Baen arrives with a missive from his father for the Lady of Friarsgate, only it's addressed to Rosamund and so Elizabeth offers her hospitality for the night and sends him to her mother's home, over the border in Scotland, only to have him return as the missive is in regards to buying sheep from Friarsgate. Elizabeth does agree to sell some, at the same time, also offering him one of the border collie pups to help with herding the sheep. Baen is attracted to the fair Elizabeth in all her course ways, however, he also knows that with his lack of lineage that he's not suitable. Still she must be made ready to attend court and he's more than willing to offer to help her in the fine art of kissing. On the day she's to leave for court, Baen finds her crying in one of the fields and holds her as she cries herself out. Will Baen and Elizabeth find a way to be together? Or will their senses of duties keep them apart?
THE LAST HEIRESS encompasses all the boldness, coarseness, honesty, and flat out bluntness of a young woman raised in the country, bundled up in all the finest frippery and have her attending the court of King Henry VIII. The results are charming and fun as Elizabeth continues to be true to herself despite the gossip and backstabbing that the court thrives on. Elizabeth is a strong, independent woman fully in control of her lands, and it's a pleasure to experience her in all her simple country girl glory. I love that even though this is the fourth and final book in the Friarsgate Inheritance series and thus, has followed along the same kind of theme. There is also mention of characters from previous Bertrice Small novels. Blaze Wyndham was mentioned from the book by the same name, as is the Earl of Glenkirk's daughter, Janet and Colin Hay who are both characters from THE KADIN. In this way two of the other books I loved are also included and their characters live on in the reader's mind. This book is full of amusing memorable characters.

Great Book.......2006-08-27
Wonderful book, great service and fast shipping. Will come back again. Amazon is great!!!
BORING.......2006-04-15
Having had the pleasure of reading ALL of Bertrice Small's books. I have been disappointed to say the least about The last Heiress... Sure the historical background is wonderful, Who can not love King Henry the 8th, his reign was legendary. Yet Poor Elizabeth's story is dull as dirt. Even at the luxurious King Henry's court, Elizabeth failed to be defrocked. Of course one did not expect her to get her groove on at boring Friargate, but none at court either??? Come on, where was the adventure, the passion, the erotic love scenes. If you are looking for that, keep looking, as it is not present in this story.

Customer Reviews:
Weak Link In This Series.......2004-05-17
In this, the second installment in the Liam Campbell series, Alaska State Trooper Campbell is investigating the deaths of a family on their fishing boat and the death of an assistant to an archeologist. It's been quite some time since I read the first Liam Campbell novel, but I had no trouble picking up the story. The first one third of this book was very good, but then the pace became a little uneven. Although the relationship between Liam and his girlfriend, Wy was enjoyable early on, towards the end it became tedious...interrupting the hoped for conclusion to the mysteries. The humor with which Liam faces life and the good plot twists toward the end saved this one from being a total wash. Maybe I have come to expect too much from Stabenow because her previous books have been so good.
A novel searching for a plot.......2002-07-04
This is apparently the second novel in a series. The novels should be read in order as substantial references are made to prior interactions between characters.
I had expected this to be a mystery. It is more a romance novel as an Alaska trooper woofs after his ex-mistress, both on-duty and off-duty. The story is compounded by various people, both single and married, who are sleeping around. There is also the appearance on the scene of Trooper Liam Campbell's father, an Air Force colonel whom Liam thought was in Florida. Mixed into the story are the Yupik shaman Moses Alakuyak; the ex-mistress, Wy, who runs an air service into the Alaska Bush; an obsessed scientist investigating an old native site; and native Alaskans who dislike the white invaders. There is also a mysterious raven that seems to follow Liam.
There are numerous sub-plots. A family is murdered aboard their fishing boat. The graduate assistant helping to excavate the native site is murdered. There are questions about what the graduate assistant found, about why Liam's father is in Alaska, and about who has been sleeping with whom. Wy's newspaper reporter friend shows up to investigate a tip she won't reveal.
Liam gets some assistance from a computer guru friend who has information on everyone in the state as the investigation continues. There are some twists and turns with revelations that are sometimes surprising and sometimes not. The trooper, of course, gets his man and also, in this case, his woman. He seems to have a somewhat casual attitude about turning over two men to a killer who murdered them (someone that would get a police officer suspended or fired in any other state). There are a few interesting sidelights as when one character goes into a long tirage against cell phones before throwing another man's cell phone out the front door of a bar, avoiding the probable urge to stuff it where the sun doesn't shine.
Overall, the novel is too fragmented into sub-plots, many unrelated. The novel has strong sexual content, language, and some violence. Parental discretion is advised.
Great mystery!.......2001-12-29
Another book to keep you entranced in trying to figure out the ending.
Alaska is a strange state...that's for sure!.......2001-03-29
I've read the Shugak mysteries, and think I like them a little better than this group. Stabenow is a good writer, not a great one. The plot is interesting but confusing, especially with two separate murders to solve. What Stabenow is good at is characterization. She does a wonderful job of making the people in the book tangible and real.
Since I have Deaf friends in Alaska and family, I am well aware of the hardships of the fishing life up there. The regular trips they make out in storms and big seas make "The Perfect Storm" look minor. This is part of their everyday life, and I admire anyone who has the stamina for it.
The people...well, they are odd. Not all of them, but enough to convince me that Alaska may be a nice place to visit, but you don't want to live there. Besides the winter darkness would drive me bonkers! Stabenow is also good at explaining the history of the state and its native people, and I thoroughly enjoy that in a mystery. Liam and Wy could use a little more rounding out...maybe I need to go back and read the first one. Some authors have a more difficult time then others writing from the viewpoint of the opposite sex. This may be the problem here since she is not merely writing from the woman's viewpoint as with the Shugalak mysteries.
The cracks about the looney and moody scientist (archeologist) and his protecting his discoveries to support his theory are right on target. I've read and met enough of these guys to realize too many of them will go to any lengths to protect their theories, even if they are wrong (which is distinctly unscientific!) Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh
So Sure of Death.......2000-12-04
Wonderful story and characters. I like Liam and Wynette even better than the Kate Shugak series which is also very good!

The Trouble with Angels.......2007-09-23
The Trouble with Angels (Harper Monogram)another gripping angel book. Debbie Macomber worked her magic & came up with a finish that the reader didn't expect. Wonderful ending!
I Just Couldn't Get Into This Book.......2006-03-27
I didn't like the way she skipped around in the next chapter.
Perfect Christmas Present to Readers.......2002-12-30
Debbie MacOmber offers up a tantalizing array of stories for her readers in this anthology featuring Shirley, Goodness and Mercy--three angels who are apt to get into trouble whenever they visit earth.
From the tale of a Jewish girl who desperately wants a different life but is afraid to go against tradition, to a spunky inner city school teacher, to a rising star, this book has something for everyone.
Each angel has a woman to help. Each woman has her own unique story and problems. And each romance has a happy ending.
I highly recommend this book and would offer the rare comment that five stars isn't nearly enough to describe the heartwarming delight I felt upon finishing the last line in each of the three stories.
I tip my hat to Miss MacOmber for her talented storytelling capabilities and ability to involve my emotions until I laughed and cried.
Wonderful sequal to A Season of Angels.......2001-11-10
This is another adventure of these lovely angels
Shirley, Goodness and Mercy. It is a must read for all
angel lovers. They warm your heart and make you want
to read more. I wish that there was a movie based on
this series.
Delightfully heart warming!!.......2000-12-09
This is the perfect book for the holiday season. It is heart warming and so much fun. Three angels are sent on different assignments to help bring back the spirit of Christmas and add a little bit of "guidance" of their own to some much-needed families and individuals. It involves a bitter divorced woman and her 12 year-old daughter, a young man about to marry someone that just might not be the one, and a sad church minister still grieving the death of his beloved wife from three years ago who has lost all his religious faith. I highly recommend this book to anyone ready for a good Christmas novel to help get you back in the holiday spirit.

A Wonderful Book.......2006-06-07
I have had a paperback copy of this book since I was a child, and it is now pretty dog-eared from being read so many times with much laughter. It was originally called, 'Life With Mother Superior,' and is a true story of Jane Trahey(1923-2000)and her High School years at 'St. Marks'(actually Providence Academy in IL). Rollicking, hysterically funny, and so, so nostalgic for we pre-Vatican 2 Catholic types. It was such a good book that a movie was made in 1966 with Hayley Mills and Ros Russell, called 'The Trouble With Angels,' and a sequel, 'Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows.' Trahey, after her graduation from Providence Academy and Mundelein College, was a famous advertising executive in New York, withb her own agency. She died of cancer in 2000. This book is special, and its humour is ageless.
A fantastic hilarious story about girls and friendship.......2006-01-07
I read this story when it was first published in the sixties...and read and reread it in hysterics. The two girl heroines meet and instantly falll together over a hatred for conformity and a love of mischief. But as time goes on, they go their separate ways. It also gives an unsentimental view of the pre-Vatican II Catholic church, for good and for bad.
As advised above, it is the basis for the Rosalind Russell/Hayley Mills movie, "The Trouble with Angels" -- but as usual the book is far better than the movie.
As I recall, the author Jane Trahey grew up to be a prominent advertising executive. You can tell that it was the relationship detailed in this book that helped stoke her creativity. Why is this book no longer in print? It's a classic.
The book that started it all..........2005-12-22
This fabulous novel came to life on film with Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior and Haley Mills playing Mary Clancy. If you find a copy of this wonderful book, hang on to it!
If you enjoyed the movie, see the film! It was delightful!
The basic plot:
Two young girls meet on a bus to a Catholic School; St. Francis. Mischeif and mayhem follow after the two girls become friends.

This book is full of great ideas . Not only are there many examples of easy activities without expensive equipment, but there are also suggestions for food recipes that will delight your children.
I highly recommend this book.
Great Fun!.......2003-06-07
This is an excellent book for fun, learning and just great family times. Some of the ideas are more complex then others so the activities you choose depend on your time and how much you want to get involved at that time.
For every activity it lists all you need and complete directions which are really detailed for that activity.
The resources are wonderful! It list magazines, books, websites, organizations which are related to each topic and just branches out the fun and learning.
This was a nice book to keep around for further reference. Great to have on hand!
Lots of different activities to keep your children in shape.......2001-10-26
While some ideas seem too much work and/or time involved, it's a great book. What I liked about this book is that it gives you lots of fun facts throughout the book. For each activity, it lists materials you need and the directions on how to do that activity. At the end of the book, it lists magazines, organizations, and websites relating to Family Fun.
