Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cozy, but not a well developed plot.......2007-08-27

I enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the tea shop, and it is abundant here. This book isn't quite as good as the last because the motive of the murderer is a little lame. I'm not sure someone willing to commit murder wouldn't think things out a bit more to make sure they were murdering the right person. The second murder was even more "unthought out" - circumstantial evidence of such a thin nature being the reason to get a gun and shoot to kill? I don't think so. One last complaint about the heroine's relationship with her boyfriend - could it be any less passionate? Yikes! Tidwell the policeman seems to like Theo more! The warmth of the book is definitely in the tea shop and with Theo's tea shop family - and not with her romantic relationship! That all being said, it still is fun to read to be part of the cozy family.

5 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better ...........2006-09-05

I love this mystery series and they keep getting better and better. I have often noticed that after about the fourth or fifth book in a mystery series, they often start losing their "punch". That is not the case with this one. In fact, I think this is the best book in the series. The tea info is enlightening, the characters are well-developed and the setting of Charleston intriging. What a gem of a book !!!!

Anyone who enjoys "cozy" myteries should definitely give this series a try .... it doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Jasmine Moon.......2006-08-07

Very enjoyable. If you like tea, you need to read this mystery.

4 out of 5 stars A frosty Autumn mystery.......2006-07-25

Again, Theodosia Brown is right on top of things and takes this murder mystery to a surprising conclusion. And just reading this book makes one hungry for tea and all of Haley's baked goods.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-07-20

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book. The interesting thing about this book is that if you take out the mystery completely, it would still be a charming little book because of all the tea talk, the quirky townspeople, and the nice folks at the Indigo Tea Shop. It just seemed like the mystery was folded into the book as an afterthought and the story didn't flow as well as I'd hoped.

Basically, it's an amusing, fluffy, easy to read cozy with great recipes and tea tips at the back of the book. If you like tea and pastries as I do, check out that section. But I gave the book three stars for these reasons:

1. The plot was pretty flimsy, even for a cozy. Ever read the Aunt Dimity series? That series is about as light and fluffy as you can get, but each book had an element of suspense that made me keep reading. Not so much with The Jasmine Moon Murder.

2. The dialogue between the characters was at times pretty generic and Disney-esque. Hayley, Drayton, and Theo are adults, but the lines they have are rather corny. In this sense, the book almost seemed geared towards a young audience.

3. Sometimes, the author gave a little too much detail for scenes or actions that didn't really require it. For example, at one point when Theo answers the phone, the author describes the phone ringing, Theo reaching for the phone, and how she held the phone as she spoke. I understand the need to set a scene, but I wish the author would have put less effort into scenes like that, and more effort into the actual mystery at hand.

4. Certain parts of the book went on too long and didn't apply to the plot. For example, when Theo and Jory go horseriding, the description of the horses and how Theo rode went on for several pages. I wish more time was spent on the incident that occured after Theo finished riding. (You'll know when you read the book) That one bit of action seemed too rushed.

I noticed one reviewer here said that the author's other books are more tightly constructed in terms of plot. I will definitely read the other books.

        Book Description

Pennsylvania Dutch Inn owner Magdalena Yoder returns in the tenth book in the mouthwatering series...

When an imprisoned con man meets his Maker after sampling a bowl of gruel laced with arsenic, it's cruel and unusual punishment-indeed. And since Magdalena provided the last supper, she's convinced that one of his many visitors must have added the sinister secret ingredient.

With the reputation of her establishment at stake, Magdalena puts on her detective bonnet to discover who in Hernia poisoned the porridge

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too cute for words.......2006-06-04

Myers' earlier books were palatable, but this one pales badly. Magdalena has become not only cutesy but (gag) politically correct. I couldn't get past the fourth page.
Myers comes off as a Diane Mott Davidson wannabe, and falls considerably short.

        5 out of 5 stars I Love Tamar.......2006-02-09

I love everything that Tamar Myers writes. Her books are always good for a ton of laughs. I haven't actually made any of the recipes that are included but I love that they are there. I don't think the point is that everyone should love grits, but maybe there will be one or two recipes that you will enjoy. Why look for something to complain about. Especially something that has nothing to do with the story line. If you like Myers you should try Diane Mott Davidson. She is great also.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Better Outing for Magdalena.......2004-02-24

This tenth installment in the Magdalena Yoder series is a bit better thatn some of the more recent additions to this series. There is still an editing problem that is apparent in the books, but I found that there wasn't as much repetition and even less "wailing". That is an improvement. But there is still the "off the wall" plot and unbelievable occurences (a car lands in a tree when shoved off the road?) Still I found the book amusing and there is a possibility of another interesting character - young Allison holds promise. In this book Magdalena is asked by Melvin to help him find who has poisoned one of his prisoners in his jail cell. Magdalena goes off in hot pursuit of some really strange female suspects. Anyway, we found out "who done-it" in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Magdalena sets out to find out who poisoned Clarence Webber.......2003-08-26

Magdalena Yoder owns and runs the PennDutch Inn in Pennsylvania. She is a God-fearing Mennonite woman who also assists her brother-in-law, Melvin Stolfus to solve some of his more difficult cases. He is the Sheriff and has political aspirations.

He once again asks for her help. Clarence Webber died while eating a bowl of gruel in the jail, gruel that Magdalena provided. She brought it, but her cook Freni made it. Freni is an Amish woman in her seventies who is not always easy to get along with, but she would never kill someone.

As Magdalena sets out to discover who put the secret ingredient that killed Clarence into the gruel. She starts by investigating the four females who visited Clarence before he died. Turns out they all claim to be his widow. If that isn't enough, a teenage hellion, Allison, is dumped on Magdalena and spices up things at the Inn. Then there is the Reverend Nixon, pastor of the church with 32 words in its name.

As Magdalena gets deeper and deeper into Clarence's past and his four widows, she finds herself in danger. Can she figure out who the killer is before someone else is killed, namely herself.

This series is always fun to read. A fabulous cozy series. Magdalena finds herself in all sorts of amazing predicaments and her Mennonite take on things can turn an ordinary situation into a hilarious one. Her sister Susannah, who is married to Melvin, is a character all by herself, let alone with her dog Shnookums.

I enjoy the different characters, the rich people staying at the inn, as well as the Mennonites and Amish and how they are all related to each other at least once. She has a wonderful way of telling a story and I constantly find myself reading more to find out what happens next. It's a book you won't want to put down. I highly recommend it and the whole series. Get ready to laugh!

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK!!!.......2003-03-16

I couldn't put it down. Tamar Myers did it, again! Magdalena gets the bad guy in the most humerous way. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for more Pennsylvanina-Dutch Mysteries

                          Book Description

This volume contains two imaginary tales of a, German invasion of England. The first, The Battle of Dorking, was written in 1871 by Sir George Tomkyns Chesny, and sparked great controversy when it was initially serialized anonymously in Blackwood's Magazine. It inflamed the English anxieties
over the emergence of Germany as a great military power, and raised doubts about the preparedness of Britain for a possible war. In the story, German invaders conquer England because they are better trained, better equipped, and have a vast conscript army. In turn, the story is both a thinly-veiled
call to action by Chesny, as well as a well-crafted work of fiction.
The second story in the volume, When William Came by Saki, is a bitter tale which imagines England under the rule of a German royalty now ensconced in Buckingham Palace. Written in 1913, it was published at a time when world war was inevitable--indeed, Saki would soon lose his life in the war on
                          the continent.
Both books mark the course of the then-flourishing "future war" genre, showing the fascination for invention on the part of the authors, and their impassioned pleas to their readers patriotism.

It's sad that they are no longer in print. They were in print just a few months ago. Good book, fiction about a war between Germany & England in the 1880's or so. Well done & easy to read but too short! Much better than H.G.Well's stuff in terms of an interesting story.

A stunningly vibrant and widely-read military novel deals with the incursion of England by Germans after their conquest over France. The novel is considered a initiation of invasion literature genre. Chesney has remarkably illustrated the horrors of foreign threat of war and the consequent devastation. Thought-provoking!

                                Book Description

Everyone forgets things sometimes. But do you ever feel like you can't keep track of simple things like acquaintances' names, your car keys, and the two things you needed to pick up on the way home? As America's population ages, more and more people are struggling with the fact that their memory and mental power are not that they used to be. Maybe you've tried "exercising" your mind, or maybe you've just started keeping better "to do" lists. But a proven way to improve your mind, memory and mood is to feed your brain the nutrients it needs to function at its peak performance level.Over the past few years, scientists have discovered dozens of new supplements that enhance and sharpen memory, intelligence, vision, and mental performance. In Mind Boosters, one of the world's most respected nutritional experts examines the very latest research on these breakthrough brain nutrients, amino acids, herbs, and hormones.Along with a scientific and practical evaluation of their benefits and risks, Dr. Sahelian explains how to combine mind-boosting supplements to help patients with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, depression as well as those with normal age-related mental decline. People of all ages can benefit from the sensible, step-by-step programs tailored to the differing needs of the young, the middle aged and the elderly.

5 out of 5 stars ENHANCING YOUR MIND, MEMORY AND MOOD.......2001-08-13

I have found Dr Sahelian's books on Creatine, DHEA and Pregnenolone very useful, and this one is no exception. He discusses brain function and chemistry and how it relates to nutrition, and provides information on how to improve your mind through lifestyle factors. This is followed by detailed explanations of how supplements work, supported by research findings, under the categories Memory Boosters, Mood & Energy Lifters, Methyl Donors, Keeping Your Brain Young With Antioxidants, Mind Energizers, Amino Acids, Brain Hormones, and Psychoactive Herbs. There are extensive mind-boosting programmes for the age groups 25 - 40, 41 - 60 and for age 61 and over. The last chapter provides natural prescriptions for depression, vision enhancement, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. This well-researched, well-written book is rounded off with a glossary, bibliography and references plus a thorough index. It is the most complete and authoritative book of its kind and also a pleasure to read. I would have liked to find more information on Deprenyl, but it is a drug - not a natural supplement - and thus outside the scope of this book. Similar informative books that deal with nutritional supplementation include William Regelson's 'The Superhormone Promise' and Timothy J Smith's 'Renewal.' Mind Boosters however, remains the best overall reference book on cutting-edge nutrition for a healthy mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Best to date On the Subject! Boost Your Mind!.......2001-04-26

"Mind Boosters" by Dr. Ray Sahelian, as of today, is the most authoritative and detailed book on the way food and herbal supplements can affect your mental performance. As the cover implies, your mind, memory and mood can be profoundly influenced by what you take in your body, key among it various herbs, tinctures and many supplements and remedies found in specialty stores, and more often, even in the supermarket.

I really enjoy the fluidity of the writing style. If you took out the corporate restraints and told our author, "Okay, doctor, I want you to stick to the basics and use simple English so that anybody could understand." Especially useful is the information which other books leave out due to their own ignorance, whereas Dr. Sahelian gets right down to the 30- and 40-letter names for specific hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes and other crucial substances, or fluids, in the body that don't HAVE any other name. This is EXACTLY the information that I need for my research, and whether or not you are doing research or just want to improve your overall health, you are really missing out on invaluable information if you have not read this book. For each topic discussed, the author has sub-topics of cautions and side-effects, recommendations, and personal anecdotes filled with specific information about the substance or vitamin at hand. Dr. Sahelian, for example, is a strong believer that many people suffer stress and anxiety needlessly, simply because they fail to supplement their diet with B-Vitamins, and also that they lack "good" cholesterol, or the Omega-3 class fatty acids. I was pleased to know that I have been taking Lecithin, a natural source of choline, as a fat emulsifier and brain booster for over twenty years, and is one reason why I have an excellent memory--not to mention clarity of thinking and good concentration. Not only that, supplements like lecithin, flax, and the omega-3 class fatty acids help to balance your cholesterol levels. Did you know that all cholesterol is not "bad?" That we need balance, and need to focus on low-density lipoproteins? Keep reading this book, do what it says, and you should far outlive your normal life expectancy.

"Mind Boosters" will reinforce or strengthen your knowledge of what you may need to know most in your life.

Furthermore, Dr. Sahelian points out the role of St. John's Wort, Ginko Biloba, 5-HTP, GABA, Kava, and lots more, including the role of fats in the diet (did you know that the brain is made up of 60% fat?). All this perfectly spread over the 22 chapters. Part I starts right at the beginning with, "Using Your Brain..." and can have an ordinary person with reasonable capacity to take in new information beginning to understand some important functions about brain and mind and body interaction. It's like this doctor doing a basic, bare-bones sketch to brand new medical students--and the book does have great, easy-to-understand illustrations. For these reasons, this book will have you so smart by the time you are done that, if you follow the advice (with the help of a doctor), you will have little need to worry about suffering the effects of neglecting your body's precise chemical balances. Also discussed are the role of receptor sites, and how they can be intercepted by pseudo-neurons, or neurons that were "faking" the fingerprint of another.

Dr. Sahelian is a terrific writer. Not one word is wasted, every sentence informs, every chapter educates. I've memorized most of the acronyms, and when you start rattling off these terms at a stressed, depressed or oppressed person because their diet is lacking, they stand back at their impression of your knowledge. "I think you should start by cutting back on the coffee," I tell them gently, and furthermore "pick up a good Vitamin-B complex, along with a choline and inositol supplement. You might also consider some gamma-aminobutryic acid or dihydroepiandrosterone, along with a 50-mg. supplement of 5-hydroxytryptophan." They say, "Whoa! I had no idea I needed those." The bottom line: the foods and drinks we assimilate are all precursors to hormones and neurotransmitters in the body. So if someone is not eating right or getting enough fluids, well, would that explain why, for example, they are depressed, anxious, obsessed, frustrated or angry all the time? Check your diet first! "Boost your mind" is the cornerstone of Dr. Sahelian's work, in which he really knows his subjects. This book should be worth scholarly credits. Recommended for all educated readers. Buy it today! It never leaves my nighttable.

I found this book to be an excellent and very readable source of information regarding the current wave of cutting edge natural supplements for enhancing mind, memory, and mood. Dr. Sahelian presents information based on research and also upon his own personal experience with the supplements being discussed, which provides both an objective and a personal perspective that gives the work depth and believability. I was especially impressed with Dr. Sahelian's web site, referenced in the book, which allows his readers to ask follow up questions directly to the Doctor himself (he actually answers!). Buy this book.

                                5 out of 5 stars Mind Boosters.......2000-07-28

I first learned about Mind Boosters on author Ray Sahelian, M.D.'s Web Site. My particular interest has been in vitamin and hormone supplementation as an anti-aging regimen. Dr. Sahelian provides an extremely informative discussion of a multitude of supplements -- vitamins, herbs, amino acids, and hormones -- that can keep one's mental acuity at its peak and help maintain a high level of overall physical well-being. Since many of these supplements have yet to be subjected to long-term clinical testing by medical experts, Dr. Sahelian brings to the reader the latest information about the use of many of these supplements that is partly based on his own personal experiences as well as results reported by countless others. He is both prudent and cautious in recommending the types of supplements and the appropriate doses one should take for his or her particular needs. This book is well written, informative and can and should serve as a continuing source of reference.
