3 out of 5 stars Too short, but not bad........2007-10-08

I think that the ability to create a world that is filled with magic and unknown places is perhaps too great a task to do in one book. There are details and concepts that we, as readers, have become spoiled with thanks to the growing trend of long, multi-volume series.

The author does a good job of telling a story within the constraints of a single volume. The main character is interesting, relatively likeable, but not terribly believable. That's probably due to the fact that there simply isn't enough space to do much in the way of character development.

The setting is a small village that goes through several disasters in a short time. The heroine loses her new husband, her family and is plagued by an onset of magical power in a community the equates magic with evil. Add to this mix the return of mythical, magical creatures and you have a pretty good idea of what's going on.

This is a really, good author who's work in other series I have really enjoyed. This is not her best work by any means, but it's not too bad if you need something simple to read on a plane flight or something.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tale.......2007-08-13

Patricia Briggs will quickly climb to the top of your favorite authors list. I know she did mine; why, I am only missing "When Demons Walk" at this moment.
The Hob's Bargain is an excellent fairy tale, full of the normal bargains, good versus evil, misconceptions, truth, love, and good will overcome. Briggs weaves a wonderful tale that will whisk you away. You will find yourself not wanting it to end.

3 out of 5 stars An early Briggs book.......2007-02-10

I came across Briggs because of my fascination with Modern Paranormal novels. Her Moon Called (Mercy 1) and even better Blood Bound (Mercy 2) are amongst the best available in this genre. After reading these 2 books I decided get some of her older books and my first read is The Hob's Bargain. This is apparently her only stand alone book which is why I went to this first. Although an obvious early book in her career, it is still very creative and fun to read. The 2 central characters are Caefawn, a hob who serves the mountain spirit of Hob's Mountain, and Aren, a middle aged woman whose brother was selected by the bloodmages to become an apprentice because of his magical abilities and instead chose death. Aren has just been widowed on the day after her wedding when a band of raiders attack her farm killing all of her immediate family. On a mission to find survivers of a neighboring village Aren meets Caefawn, who puts her under his wing on orders from the mountain. He will teach her how to control her magic, unite her village and the raiders who start the story, and prepare her to fight an experienced bloodmage coming to town.

Why I like Patricia is that she creates well thought out worlds with logical rules and regulations. We meet a lot of the fey, mostly dark, get to know Caefawn, the last hob, real well and, find ourselves cheering for Aren as she fights all around her for survival and peace. In this book, and why it is only a 3, characterization is weak, even Aren and Caefawn are a little too 2-dimensional and not the fully fledged out 3-dimensional characters that they demand. Everyone else is way to 1-dimensional. The reason I recommend this book is that the story is superb, the pacing is well done, and the twists and turns are completely unpredictable. The climactic battle is very tense and dramatic and well executed. If you like Patricia's other books, I think you will like this. If you haven't read her then get Moon Called (5 star). If you like stories about the fey then get this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but light on substance........2007-01-27

I very much enjoyed this tale, but it ended far too abruptly for my tastes. Excellent world-building, entertaining execution and set-up, which unfortunately leaves you hanging on a few too many points by the end. The Hob is delightful. I wanted to know far more about him!

Early work by an excellent author. Ms. Briggs' style is clean and crisp, her build-up great, but the payoff lacks here. Later books by her are better.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but leaves you hanging........2007-01-11

The story is good, but how is the relationship going to actually work?

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not great.......2005-12-21

As an Arthur Upfield fan of the first water I feel like an apostate for giving one of the Master's works only four stars, but this one deserves it. The ending's trite. Sometimes Upfield's a poor closer and this book is one example. Otherwise the story's compelling and for most of the book this one's vintage Upfield. Get "The Mystery of Swordfish Reef," forget that you read somewhere that it has a weak ending, and enjoy. Maybe for you the last will be as good as the first. Then buy another Bony mystery and another and another 'till you've read them all. They're all good and, maybe they all truly deserve five stars.

3 out of 5 stars A Fish Story with Detective Interruptions.......2004-04-26

The opening is quite promising with the disappearance of the Do-Me (kind of an unfortunate name) along with her captain, herone man crew and the angler who hired them. Then the angler's head with a gun shot wound turns up in a trawler's net. An attempt is made to investigate, but the police are stymied. So they send in Napoleon Bonapart, their best detective.

Then Boney starts to fish-- and he fishes and he fishes. I don't have any ethical problem with fishing as a sport, but I found myself feeling a bit indignant about the wastefulness of catching a 580 lb. fish for sport, hanging it up by it's tail on the "town triangle" to have pictures taken, then disposing of it after a few days when it probably rank.

Boney the fisherman is not nearly as interesting as Boney the detective.

Oh, as for the mystery, it was pretty obvious by mid book (if not earlier) who had done the angler in and why. The how was not as obvious though.

Unless you like long descriptions of fishing activity I recommend reading The Bone Is Pointed or one of the other books in this series instead.

4 out of 5 stars MORE LITERARY TYPE OF FICTION.......2003-11-06

This book is quite different from most modern writings in fiction in that it is written in a more literary sense. The writing could be compared somewhat to a Hemingway novel. The entire environment and the characters are so richly painted and crisply defined that you not only enter the story but really feel it as well. The story takes place in an australian fishing village where you'll feel like you've lived for a while when you're done reading. If you're a person who likes the true mystery in a story this reading is for you. If you only like blood, gore and unending suspense and thrills with your mystery fiction I'd highly suggest you go elsewhere. The story is believable and well conceived as well as very well written for its time.
Anyone who enjoys fishing, especially deep sea, will really enjoy the book and it's attention to detail with respect to fishing for marlin. Just an added bonus for a few readers out there but another fine point that shows the author goes to great extremes in an unbelievably concise manner to bring in every detail. The overall story develops a little slowly, but the rich detail, believability and fine characters make this a great read for those who would enjoy a more literary fiction novel.

5 out of 5 stars Bony is the BEST!.......2001-03-19

I've been reading Arthur Upfield's "Bony" mysteries for several years now, hunting them down as I can, as they were written in the late 40's and 50's. ...the books are absolutely awesome in their sense of the place that is Australia, the character delineations and the incredible world of "the tracker," someone who can read "the story of the bush" to tell what happened. In all of these mysteries, I've never figured it out before Bony did. The pace of the stories is slow, even languid, but the books are very well written, and full of information about a place most of us will never visit, and its culture. Sometimes Bony goes undercover, as he does here, and these are my favorites. "Bony" is Napolean Bonaparte, the detective: a half aborigine, half white man. He's smarter than anybody, and while he sounds like a pain in the neck, in the book his manners are smooth and charming. There is nothing vulgar (except drunkenness) in any of these books. I find them fascinating, and enthralling. Mystery at Swordfish Reef is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The Mystery of Swordfish Reef.......2001-01-06

Another Upfield success. Detection and Aussie "Abo" insight is the perfect match. An older series that needs to be brought back to press in a complete set.

This is the first in a wonderful series of books that seem destined to become a classic. The Kingdoms are a magical place and a fantastic destination. There are no lovelier fantasy books for readers of all ages than the Kingdoms books. The best part about this book, other than the lovely story, beautiful imagery, and wonderful characters, is that its only the beginning of a grander tale. Adventure awaits! Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars I got to give it 5 of 5.......2007-09-29

Kids, adults. The Kingdoms & the Elves are great. I love the books and how they are presented. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I have read this series 6 times! I know that isn't near as many as others, but it is a lot for me. This series of books are incredible to read, keep you locked in to the end of the last book, and make you want to reread them.

I find Stanek's characters lovable and relateable. There is a character for every reader to identify with in some way. He brings readers on a journey with Adrina, Seth & Vilmos, and what a journey it is. This is a great time to start reading (if you haven't already). This series is great literature, and is compulsively page turningly entertaining. I give them my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches are the real deal. This set is fantastic.......2007-09-16

I am totally pleased with this set of books. They are great and get better in the last books. If you're one of the few people who has not yet read this amazing series - or if you're on the fence about getting it for a child - DON'T HESITATE. This isn't half baked or over the top stuff.

The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches is a phenomenon because Robert Stanek is an incredible writer. He brilliantly crafts a vivid alternate universe where magical creatures and magic are real. The plots of each book are a brilliant balance of coming of age stories, friendship, danger, and epic good against evil.

There are parallels to the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia. Stanek has a special affinity for action. With the exception of the first each of the books races and soars until a rip roaring conclusion.

What more can I say about The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and the fascinating world? It is absolutely amazing as you become engrossed into each book, each chapter, each page, each word. The books have helped me rediscover reading for the last few years. I read all 4 books in 2 weeks. I started the In the Service of Dragons on a Friday and finished all four by Monday afternoon! I recommend all of these books to children, teenagers, and adults alike. There are those out there that are hesitant about the books. I was a skeptic. I had heard great things about the books, but never considered them. Then one day I took a leap of faith and began reading and I've never looked back. Thank you Robert Stanek and I love The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and the world you created!

1 out of 5 stars amateurish writing and an uninspired plot.......2007-08-27

This book is totally non-noteworthy. I normally wouldn't even bother to waste time writing a review about it, since it is just a self published book pretending to be greater than it is.

This book is not a "modern day fantasy classic". It is not "better than Harry Potter" or "Star Wars with elves". Robert Stanek is not "America's Tolkien". Where did all this over-the-top hype come from? One can only guess.

This book is a stale piece of prose. A short boring episode of what threatens to be some endless drawn out cliché (there are books 2, 3, 4 and then a "sequel series" (?) that goes on and on). This book is so unimaginative that there is even a "dark lord" and a "middle earth" thrown into the mix.

However, this book does have some unintentional funny bits. I had to laugh when I was told that "middle earth" was a realm between lower and upper earth. And the author clearly is confused about the meaning of many words, such as when a frightened princess speaks COYLY to a supernatural apparition.

4 out of 5 stars Great story line.......2007-08-17

i just finished this book and plan to read the rest of the series. N ot on a par with "Potter" or "Lord of the Rings" or "Aslan", but a very engaging story with good characters...

I have mixed feelings about this book. The premise of the book, a changling's search for love, is clever and held much potential. Unfortunately, the story became maudlin and syrupy to the point that it approached an adolecent love story. Without the heavy handed romanticism, the plot line developed reasonably well but, the "plot twist" was somewhat predictable. Actually, it appeared as if the "twist" was the only way the author, David M. Pierce, was able to resolve the plot crisis. In so doing, he saved one of the major characters, but the "crisis resolution" was contrived and unsatisfying. I believe with less INTRUSIVE romance, the story of an Elf Child could have been much more creative and rewarding. If you have nothing else around the house to read, then pick this one up, but if you are looking for a story that captures your imagination and demands your complete attention, you need to look elsewhere.

                          3 out of 5 stars A so-so gay romance/fantasy novel.......2004-10-11

Russ is a changeling, or elf child. As a changeling, he will never grow old and has the ability to change his appearance to man, woman or beast. He is also gay and trying to find love in modern day San Diego. One night, while on a date, he runs into Eric who accidentally spills beer all over him. Russ notices an immediate connection with him, and they soon start dating. But Russ must keep his abilities a secret from Eric and that soon begins to take its toll on their relationship.

Much is happening with this novel: the search for love and acceptance as a gay man, connecting your present with your past, the overly-image consciousness of some in the gay community. But I had a problem with the characters. None of them displayed any emotional depth, made me empathize with them. They went about their routines and too easily accepted everything that happened. They came across as very one-dimensional. Also, the genealogical connections were just a bit too coincidental which had me shaking my head as the story progressed. This is a so-so novel that could use a bit more character development.

                          5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book.......2004-07-13

In my opinion this has to be one of the best gay love stories ever written. The supernatural twist only served to add to the depth of the story. Russ and Eric make such a wonderful couple. Exploring and testing the love they share for one another in this manner is brilliantly wonderful. The suspense was blissfully gripping. I loved they way this author kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to keep reading even when my eyes were tired and wanting to go on strike. This is such a great read.

3 out of 5 stars Good premise (and GREAT cover!), but falls short..........2004-04-29

I had high hopes for this book - and not only because the cover's so pretty! The premise sounded very appealing: an immortal and ever-young man, a changeling [in the sense that he can - indeed, must - change his appearance and/or his shape every so often or he'll weaken], who falls in love with a mortal man. Dare he confess the truth about himself, or just keep quiet - and, either way, how will he bear it when his lover ages and he does not? Sounded like it might offer many of the elements of vampire love stories without the blood-letting...

Alas, while the book contains many of the elements of a really good story, it falls a little short. The characters are likeable but 2-dimensional, the writing tends towards the over-explanatory, and the plot twists are, for the most part, interesting, but are foreshadowed and then resolved rather simply.

The story starts slowly, with Russ spending a lot of time contemplating his appearance(s) and deciding what look to wear to go clubbing. [How he manages to avoid trouble when he adopts the appearance of a different model every night isn't dealt with, though one odd side effect of a too-close resemblance to a living person is mentioned.] He meets Eric and they begin a tentative romance, which seems pleasant but a bit too easy (and a wee bit boring). Things pick up when more conflicts start to kick in; there are some potentially interesting interactions involving each man's mother [one a changeling herself, one an adoptive mother with a penchant for genealogy, and both of them very much concerned with protecting their sons], but despite some mild slight-of-hand regarding who's threatening whom, the main crisis of the story - sparked by a really nasty bashing - seemed gratuitous to me... I don't know. I didn't dislike it, exactly; I wanted the characters to get together, to work things out - but I also wanted a little more depth to them, and some greater feel for exactly what the changelings were and how that affected their world-view. [There is a brief hint at the kinds of kinky fun - and troubling psychological issues - one might have dating someone who can morph into almost any appearance, sex, or species, but even that isn't explored in any depth.] As it is, it's mostly a rather fluffy romance - no explicit sex scenes, lots of gazing into eyes and worrying about what the other is thinking - disrupted by that startlingly violent bashing; there are flashbacks by various characters, and more than a few dream/fantasy/out-of-body sequences as well, and some plot twists near the end that made me think "soap opera!". (...)

In sum, I think it could have been a really marvelous story, but it fell short.

                                      Book Description

Empowers young children with vital coping skills to help them manage teasing

Easing the Teasing is a crucial reference for parents and educators who want to help teasing victims acquire the coping skills necessary to manage these painful incidents. Easing the Teasing provides elementary and junior high school kids with a repertoire of strategies to deflect and discourage teasing--including positive self-talk; ignoring; visualization; reframing the tease; complimenting or agreeing with the teaser; using humor; simply saying, "So?"; and asking adults for help.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Kid-Tested Techniques Really Work!.......2007-09-12

As a bullying prevention educator, I speak to thousands of students each year, and I haven't read a better book about teasing. Some books on the topic are so overly academic that they lose the reader. Ms. Freedman's personable, down-to-earth style immediately draws you in. After reading a chapter, you feel like you've actually spent time with the author, hearing first-hand accounts and real-life success stories that offer hope and inspiration. Ms. Freedman not only shares innovative, kid-tested coping skills, but she explains how, when, and where to use each strategy. Insightful touches like "The Teasing Top Ten" (gleaned directly from kids) as well as "Success Stories" (what has worked straight from the mouth of babes), further help this book stand out from the rest. The thank you letters and drawings I've received from children, parents and educators since I've started including the techniques in my presentations serve as a testament to the value of Easing the Teasing.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review on Easing the Teasing.......2007-09-04

This book consists of great definitions, anecdotes, actual experiences of supervisors, teachers, parents, children and "bullies" who bring discomfort, hardship, cruelty and inappropriate behaviors to those whom the bullies encounter. Easing the Teasing offers the reader a multitude of solutions for adults to follow to lessen the hurt which results from the bullies' behavior and atypical behavior in schools, playgrounds, neighborhoods, homes and community settings. As educators, it is essential for us to be aware of teasing and try our very best to discourage bullies and their nasty behaviors. All of the chapters in this book offer the reader suggestions, real life experiences, strategies in empathy and compassion for us to utilize when dealing with bullies in our jobs and guidance. Easing the Teasing is an up-to-date, current, and powerful book, and should be valued as an extremely beneficial resource in every educator's library.

This is truly the best book about grade school teasing on the market! I didn't know what to do and my 8-year-old daughter didn't want to go to school anymore. She is a very sweet capable child. However, she has a wandering eye that often looks cross-eyed. She wears very thick glasses and is a bit shy. First she no longer wanted to ride the bus because of 2 kids that continued to call her "buggy bug eyes" and other mean things. So, I began driving her to school because the name calling was breaking my heart. Then after 2 weeks, she began to cry that she no longer wanted to go to lunch or out to recess and I didn't know what to do. The social worker was working with the teacher to discipline the teasers, but the behavior was still going on. The parent library at my school had a copy of "Easing the Teasing" and I read it and worked with my daughter. We practiced responses that she felt she could tell the teasers. She actually enjoyed these role playing rehearsals at home with me. And, after 10 days, she was ready to go on the bus and try them out. Her favorite calm responses were "Really?" or "So?" which really caught the boys off guard. Her reply communicated to the teasers that the put-down really didn't matter or bother her. It's like shrugging your shoulders. Two days later on the playground she responded confidently to the taunts with "Do they look like grasshopper eyes or bumblebee eyes today?" That moment was the end of being called " buggy bug eyes"! Although my child is quite shy, with enough practice and "self talk", she was able to do this and proud of herself that she solved the problem. Thanks Judy for a superb book! I'm sure this will help so many children successfully put an end to the cruel teasing while enabling them to nurture their own self-esteem at the same time.
