Book Description
Kidd and LuEllen, a wining pair of lovers and liars, get embroiled in a deadly con involving false identities, small-town scandals, and big-time murder.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author
Get stung by con artists Kidd and LuEllen...
Customer Reviews:
a bit dated.......2007-07-19
it is a good sanford book but it is easy to tell that it was wrote 20-30 years ago by the products in the story, but as all sanford novels a good read
The Kidd Series.......2006-08-12
Sanford has written another in his laudable Kidd series. Taut writing, complex characters, and fast moving plotting provide high quality entertainment with a thoughtful edge. Each in the series of four unveils new aspects of Kidd, the artist who has some unusual and lucrative, if less than legal, skills. With LuEllen, his new twist on a sidekick and Bobby, who we never quite get to see as he guides them via computer, the plots twist and wind to satisfying conclusions. Read them all, and try to read them in order to enjoy the full effect.
Note Author Names: Camp and/or Sandford.......2006-08-07
Some printings of this book list the author as John Camp; others as John Sandford. Either way, it's a Kidd and LuEllen adventure. Don't be put off by the author names.
Another Great Kidd and LuEllen Adventure!!!.......2006-08-03
Interesting story in a sleepy Mississippi River town. Kidd and LuEllen doing what they do best, plus Kidd's use of his Tarot Cards to influence the Mayor. The down trodden citizens getting even with a corrupt City Council, makes the crimes used against them to justify the means.
Kidd and LuEllen are back!.......2005-03-31
This is the second book in the Kidd and LuEllen series. It is much lighter than Sandford's Prey series, but is quite good in its own right. The dialogue is great, and the plot is complex yet easy to follow. There are also some quite funny parts. The story shows that the lines between right and wrong, good guys and bad guys can often become a bit blurred.

Book Description
"In combination with her meticulous research, Ms. Perry's infallible feeling for the historical moment yields animated political debate over the colonization of Africa, glittering views of Victorian society at play and tantalizing glimpses of a confident, assertive creature known as the 'new woman.'"
--The New York Times Book Review
Someone in the Colonial Office is passing secrets to Germany about England's African strategy. While Police Superintendent Thomas Pitt investigates this matter of treason, he is quietly looking into the tragic "accidental" death of his childhood mentor, Sir Arthur Desmond. Pitt believes he was murdered, and that the crime is connected with the treachery in the government. He is making little progress, until a second murder reverberates through London.
In the small hours of a May morning, a Thames waterman finds the strangled body of an aristocratic society beauty floating near lonely Traitors Gate. Only then do hard-pressed Pitt and his clever wife, Charlotte, begin to untangle the threads of passion and intrigue, to see clearly the pattern of tragedy and frightening evil that Pitt must deal with, at the risk of his career--and his life.
"In the tradition of Margaret Millar and Ruth Rendell, Perry saves her largest, tastiest revelation for the very last paragraphs."
--Los Angeles Times
"First rate. . . The saga of Charlotte and Thomas is always a delight."
--Mostly Murder
Customer Reviews:
Thank goodness - more Pitt less Charlotte.......2007-05-08
I find the Inner Circle not very credible. They were good for a few books but they have worn out their plot value. However, I did like the fact that Pitt is featured more prominently. I for one am losing interest in Charlotte and find her more unappealing with each book. Actually I find Emily and Great Aunt Vespasia more entertaining than Charlotte. Less Charlotte is a step in the right dirction. Despite the Innter Circle this is quite a good book with a satisfying ending.
Another Good Tale.......2005-11-25
TRAITORS GATE is another entry in the long-running Thomas Pitt series by Anne Perry. I like these stories, as evidenced by the fact that I've read them all up through this one. Given that this is a series, though, you should consider whether or not it's a good idea to start here if you haven't read any of the others. Part of the enjoyment of a series is the development of the personal lives of the main characters and this one is no exception. You can, however, pick TRAITORS GATE up and read it on its own. As far as the central plot is concerned, what you don't know won't hurt you.
This novel has been faulted for the overwhelming presence of the "inner circle", for the idea of a precinct superintendent being chosen to investigate an espionage case, and because this case doesn't involve Charlotte as much as usual. I agree that the "inner circle" seems a bit overdone and I also agree that Thomas' role in such a case is rather unlikely. Neither of these issues really detracted from my enjoyment of the story, though. After all, it's fiction and some degree of suspension of disbelief is called for. As for Charlotte's role, I find it refreshing to get a story that focuses more on Thomas every now and then.
My problem with this book, and it's a common one in this series, is the long-winded pontificating on some social or political ill of the day that Perry likes to indulge in. In TRAITORS GATE it's the evils of European colonialism in Africa. Perry takes to her soapbox and, while I may sympathize with her point of view, I just don't think a mystery story is the place for it. I read mysteries for entertainment, and TRAITORS GATE entertained me most of the time. Only when I found myself wading through digressions on colonialism and rhapsodies on the beauties of unspoiled Africa did it get tedious.
Perry's moralizing aside, her mysteries are pretty good. I enjoyed the mystery that is central to this book and I enjoyed the renewal of my acquaintance with Thomas Pitt and the other main characters in the series. I expect most fans of the Pitt series will feel the same way.
Plot a Bit Far-Fetched; Fantastic Ending.......2005-08-19
This entry in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series suffers from its dependence on "the Inner Circle," an all powerful secret organization that requires absolute loyalty of its members, at the center of its plot. Previous novels in the series have dealt with the Inner Circle, but that organization is central to the plot of Traitor's Gate, and the breadth of its reach stretches credulity beyond the breaking point.
The idea that the superintendent of the Bow Street police station would be asked to investigate a major case of espionage is also far-fetched.
Those criticisms aside, the plot moves briskly and the characters are complex and interesting. The last 50 or so pages are gripping as the novel moves toward its climax.
Another twist for Perry.......2004-01-25
Traitors Gate is full of suspense. And, as always, there is a great twist in the end.
Less is More.......2003-06-05
Fine book for fans with an interesting look into Thomas's life before London, but not one I would recommend for someone new to the series. Too many characters and a complicated (and boring) plot about the exploitation of Africa by Europeans. I had a hard time sticking to it and I don't usually struggle to get through Perry's work. Really not one of her best.

Book Description
John Huffam is sure the tall man's beard is false. He's sure of little else in November 1849, the year he is fourteen, the year his father is sentenced to London's Whitecross Street Prison.
Maybe the man following John -- who claims to be one Inspector Copperfield -- can explain why. Surely, Pa isn't prepared to reveal the truth, any more than the jovial bailiff, Mr. Tuckum, who knows something, but remains mum. Or the little Frenchman, Mr. Farquatt, who courts John's sister but seems most keen on Pa's work at the Naval Ordinance Office. Or Mr. O'Doul, the Irishman who insists Pa owes him the unimaginable sum of three hundred pounds.
Or what of the one-legged, single-mindedly fierce Sergeant Muldspoon, John's teacher? What about the boy's great-great-aunt, Lady Euphemia Huffam, who could pay the debt but won't for reasons of her own? What about the secretive Mr. Snugsbe of All Hallows Church, who hides himself away in the City's most voluminous coat?
Then there's Chief Inspector Ratchet of Scotland Yard, who is after somebody for some crime or other. True, John has a new friend and ally in Sary the Sneak...but what has even she got up her sleeve?
What John learns on his own is that there's a traitor on the loose, somewhere. And he must uncover the villain -- no matter who it might be.

I hope Avi never stops writing books. It's no wonder there are so many books by this guy - he can really write!

THE TRAITORS' GATE is everything you'd expect from an Avi novel--a well-realized historical adventure, plenty of suspense, and lots of surprises along the way. Whether you're intrigued by Victorian England, you like a good mystery, or you're just looking for a book that will keep you guessing right until the final chapter, you'll find something to enjoy here.
It is the mystery of THE TRAITORS' GATE that will keep readers turning the pages. If 14-year-old John Huffam wants to save his family from destitution, he must find a scheming traitor, who engineered his father's arrest in order to force Mr. Huffam to sell the military secrets he has memorized. Unfortunately for John, he has more suspects than he can count, and every piece of information he learns raises as many questions as answers. Even with the help of a Scotland Yard inspector and a scruffy street girl who knows all the secrets of London, the task seems close to impossible. Yet John pushes on, through multiple twists and turns, to an ending that is satisfying yet unpredictable.
Underneath the mystery, however, there is a lot more to the story. At heart, it is a tale of lost innocence and growing up. John must come to terms with the fact that many of the adults in his life, including his father, are deeply flawed. It is up to him to choose: allow himself to sink to the levels of his role models, or do his best to hold himself above them and be the best person he can be, despite his circumstances. He must also decide who to turn away from, and, more importantly, who to forgive. For nothing in THE TRAITORS' GATE is completely black and white. Every character has virtues as well as vices, and most are simply doing what they think is best for them, with believable (if not always sympathetic) motives. This depth with stick with readers long after they've discovered the answer to the mystery.
Making the story even more engaging is the vivid depiction of Victorian London. Descriptions are full of detail and life. Readers will feel as though they've taken a trip there rather than just reading about it. Avi reveals the full range of London experiences, from the lush homes of the rich to the squalid rooms of the very poor, and everything in between. Though some of the laws and customs of this period will be unfamiliar to readers, explanations are easily worked into the story as John learns things about his society even he didn't realize.
If you have a chance to pick this one up, don't hesitate. THE TRAITORS' GATE will stir the mind and the heart equally, and entertain readers along the way.

Pentecost Alley
It is 1890. Two years after the unsolved spree of England's most notorious murderer, Jack the Ripper, London shudders at the discovery of a murdered prostitute in Whitechapel. Shock follows as an aspiring ambassador is implicated in the gruesome ritual murder--only to be cleared by Superintendent Thomas Pitt, whose efforts successfully sent the true killer to the gallows. But when another, chillingly similar, murder is committed, terrifying questions arise.
Ashworth Hall
When a group of powerful Irish Protestants and Catholics gather at a country house to discuss Irish home rule, contention is to be expected. But when the meeting's moderator, government bigwig Ainsley Greville, is found murdered in his bath, negotiations seem doomed. To make matters worse, it appears the late Greville may have led a less than savory personal life.
Unless Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, can root out the truth, simmering hatreds and passions may again explode in murder, the home rule movement may collapse, and civil war may destroy all of Ireland. . . .

When customers seek their memories in Half Remembered Things, Kevin Grierson's New York shop, they gawk at the price tags attached to the toys of their childhood. Kevin reflects, "The past is always just a bit more expensive than we thought possible."
And so it is for Kevin, a successful middle-aged antiques dealer whose past is exacting a price: he journeys down dark memories of peddling his young body to strangers, destroying himself with booze and speed, striving to become predator rather than prey on the streets of New York in the 1960s. The problem, as he sees it, is that his Shadow--more than an alternate self but less than an independent doppelgänger--is the bad guy, the one who would bring back the old habits. But his Shadow is not purely evil, and Kevin is not purely good. The two of them have much to learn if they ever hope to be reconciled.
Minions of the Moon is an absorbing, beautifully wrought novel of dark fantasy--its complex web of stories told in interweaving strands, its dreamlike images balanced by a clean, matter-of-fact prose style. --Fiona Webster
Book Description
Kevin Grierson has a Shadow with a mind of its own. It likes thrills, it likes power, it likes the rush of drugs and danger. From the suburbs of Boston to the streets of New York, from the false glamour of advertising to the dark glamour of hustling and drug-dealing. Grierson's Shadow keeps him walking the edge of destruction and madness. Then a simple robbery goes horribly wrong. With the help of a flawed saint named Leo Dunn, Grierson struggles to banish his Shadow, and succeeds. Temporarily. Years later, sober and settled, at peace with his world, Kevin Grierson meets his Shadow again. And this time it won't go away.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely AWFUL.......2006-06-05
In a sentence: This was the worst book I have read in a very long time. I literally had to force myself through it.
I read reviews here before I picked it up, and I have to admit, I was excited to get into it! Doppelgangers fascinate me to no end; I expected soooo much more, especially since this book was an award winner. Imagine my disappointment when I tried to read and comprehend this piecey novel. As noted by the author, this is a compilation. Well, you could really tell, it just didn't "flow" for me at all.
Someone wrote in a prior review : "Someone recently said to me, 'I like books in which as a reader I'm not 100% sure of what's going on.' Me too. "... Well, me too!! But the thing is, I wasn't even 10% sure of what was going on!! The book twists and winds and jumps all over the place. One minute Kevin is a homeless druggie, the next?....he miraculously owns a store. People materialize/disappear in and out of his life so quickly, if you blink, you'll miss them. I just couldn't follow it. The secondary characters were hollow and had no depth.
The writing style is a complete mess, I have no other description for it, it was THAT BAD. I wouldn't even give this book a score of 1 star, if I wasn't forced to do so to submit my review.
I say steer clear of this one, it's a real stinker. I truly wish I could have written a nice review for this book.
If you want to read a fun book in the doppelganger genre, then try "Doppelganger" by Eric C. Higgs. It is much more enjoyable, has a comic twist to it, and is a very fun read. After all, isn't that one of the reasons that we all love to read?
Yakkity yak..........2003-11-09
Blah blah blah Irish Catholic blah blabitty YMCA blah blah doppelganger blah blah blah carousel blah blah old toys BLAH.
Don't waste your time. Richard Bowes, I want my three weeks back.
Felix Krull redux.......2003-09-13
This is a terrific book! Years ago I enjoyed Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidance Man. This book also keeps you reading on and on. I can't wait to read his next book.
Dark and believable fantasy.......2003-08-17
If much fantasy consists of real toads in imaginary gardens, then Minions of the Moon is precisely the other way around. In most respects it is a book about a character struggling to overcome his own dark side. It is the world as we know it, only in this world a person's dark side can exist as a separate entity.
The tip o' the hat to Mr. Hyde in the Shadow is well done. The novel is gritty enough to have a nice hard-boiled feel without being unbearably grotty.
Why not five stars? Too disjointed. It does not quite hold together well enough as a novel to make it really memorable.
Good read all the same. Not a waste of time.
A Great Haunting Novel.......2001-05-30
After I finished this book, I realized just how inventive and unique it really was. The hero Kevin is haunted by his 'shadow' who literally embodies all the bad sides of his character and past. Through solidly constructed chapters (especially a few right in the middle of this book, which are downright brilliant), Kevin both looks back at his past and confronts his shadow again after years.
At points the novel has very obviously been stitched together from many separate short works (as author admits in the preface), but once you get into the storyline and the reality as weaved together by the author, you'll let yourself go on a spook tour of Kevin's psyche.
Inventive, clever, unique, vivid, pervasive.
Someone recently said to me, 'I like books in which as a reader I'm not 100% sure of what's going on.' Me too.

Customer Reviews:
Never received this book!.......2006-07-03
Ordered this on the first of June '06, Amazon sent it twice to my old address even though I entered my new address when I placed my order. So....I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to review this book. Amazon's site makes it so difficult to report the problem, but so easy to go in circles on their site....I gave up and tried to get my message across to them in THIS venue.
nutri-officianado (self-appointed).......2004-09-04
I am the mother of a ten year old diabetic and therefore a bit of a health nut or pro-nutri counter. I can scan a nutrition label in two seconds flat and tell you exactly if it's what it claims to be on the front of the package. Well, as you can imagine, apples don't come with labels and neither do many other things one is presented with to eat. This book is with me always, it gives every possible senario on food that we take in. I am personally into weight training so I need the protein listings which cover every possible food, I have never seen so many kinds of peanut butter in my life! Who knew. I just wish I would have gotten the desk facts book, it also covers fiber intake, which would be useful. It sounds like that book could have a few misprints according to other reviews I read on it, but hey, when one is printing that many tiny numbers, a misprint is no shocker, eg. 130 grams of fat vs. 13? Pretty obvious that a restaurant chicken breast isn't going to have 130 grams of fat. So with that being considered, I'd get the desk reference Nutribase offers, coveres all the catagories. Good luck!
