I started this book because my DIL wanted to read it together. Well, she forgot but I kept reading it and became totally engrossed in this fascinating account of a young woman on the frontier. I love Sandra Dallas' historical fiction, and this one was up to her same standards. I was really surprised to see it has been 10 years since she wrote it. I am sorry that I didn't get around to reading this book sooner! It has suspense, and yearning, motherhood, grief, recovery... it was just an excellent read.

This book gave a clear description on what prairie life was like for woman. They were isolated and worked like an animal on a farm. It just proves that prairie life for women was a lot harder than for men. I loved the book so much I gave it to my husband to read. He could not put it down.

Unrealistic.......2007-04-17

I was very excited about this book and enjoyed the first half of it. It then became unrealistic. The number of deaths even for that time period was too high. I spoke with an historian about it and he agreed, while times were indeed difficult and health care virtually nonexistent, people did survive.

Also the plugging in of momentous historical events in the diary was just that, they were plugged in and didn't fit in with the flow.

The writing was good and it was a good read.

Although THE DIARY OF MATTIE SPENSER is a work of fiction, the author did seem to do extensive research into the history of the settlement of the Colorado frontier. This story has a wonderful realistic quality about it and I felt that the characters were real people. Mattie's diary entries rang true to me!

The story begins in Iowa when Mattie accepts a proposal of marriage from Luke Spenser. She's surprised and delighted since Luke is a handsome man and also very likeable. He had been the beau of another girl who was quite a beauty, but a very callow person. Mattie and Luke head to the Colorado territory soon after their wedding to start a new life on the frontier. From the beginning, Mattie does her best to be a good wife to Luke, but he often seems remote and unapproachable.

Frontier life was difficult. It might seem simple to take a bath, but first you had to carry the water in from a distant pond. Living in a sod house was dark, dusty and snakes were all around the property. Mattie was not a complainer and had always been know as a person who was a hard worker. So she rarely complained.

There are many delightful passages in the book; one, is the following description of a kind lady that Mattie met on a trip to Denver. Mattie says, "I have become very fond of Mrs. Chubb. She is a jolly, fleshy woman who spends her time reading romantic novels. She said she had been unable to cure herself of the vice and feared it would excite her passions unduly, but I replied I thought the greater harm in novels was exciting the purse."

Mattie's life is filled with highs and lows, but I don't want to give too much away. This is a wonderful story and worth reading.

This is my introduction to Jack Frost and I didn't enjoy it. Total lack of respect for women. Is this a British thing calling all females cows? A more disreputable character I would hate to meet. I can't find one good thing to say about this author. The story was way too long and left a lot of holes not filled in. Course who would have suspected 2 women, but after rounding up everyone Frost could he was bound to stumble on the actual perps. I have read many, many better mysteries. Try Anne Perry sometime. She writes about Dectectives in London too.

Just Sheer Brilliance.......2003-09-03

Every Frost book I read is such supurb pleasure that I want to just keep reading it. This one is no exception. It is not Agatha Christie, nor is it Shakespeare. It is classic, never-the-less. It wont suit all - some people prefer more long words, or their sense of humour is too restricted. Frost books keep me on the edge of the seat, and emotionally charged. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I am just too absorbed. Winter Frost (like all the others) had just these effects. The TV series is good (David Jason is excellant) but the books are much more involved and dark. If you've read and enjoyed one book - you'll love the rest. If you haven't, then give it a try! Because although each book has some similarities (LIFE is LIKE THAT) it is equally true to say that each book is different. If one reviewer tells you the characters are cardboard, then I say I know several of the characters in real life. different names, but it's them never-the-less. maybe that makes real life cardboard. I dunno. But I just love these books.

easy uninspiring read.......2002-08-06

I read this book on holidays having just read Philip Roths "The human stain".
It is readable but repetitive and stereotypical. I enjoy the TV series but in contrast to conventional wisdom the book is disappointing in comparison
Frost comes across as a combination of Colombo and Benny Hill in a Carry on film. The characters are all cardboard cut outs and the ubiquituous bacon sandwiches ,page 3 females and viagra fired men becomes tiresome.
A mindless read after a heavy book or 10 pints of lager!!

Another fine addition to the series.......2001-11-08

If your a fan of the series as I am, this novel was worth the wait. Frost is up to his elbows in crime again with a serial killer of prostitutes and another rapist and killer of small children among his problems. Of course, the bureaucratic Mullet is not helping things either. Frost attacks these problems with his usual wit and style, yet Frost also experiences a great deal of self doubt in this instance as the investigations drag on due to dead ends and the lack of resources and manpower. Fans of the TV series will recognize that sense of melancholy that David Jason so well portrays.

It was a great and entertaining read and the humor had me laughing out loud. Five stars

I'm sorry I've finished reading this book!.......2001-06-26

And I'll have to wait for the next book of this "Jack Frost" series for a long time. Maybe two years? Or more than that?

He has been the same since I first read "A touch of Frost.": a dirty, lousy, lazy, but lovable bloke. He is very charming especially when the situation around him gets worse and worse. It's because, I think, he never blame anyone but himself under any pressure.

If you haven't recently met a charming man, go for this book and find him very attractive!!!

Detective Inspector Jack Frost of Denton CID is an aging, scruffy, undisciplined, irreverent and intuitive sleuth who manages to solve all those nasty cases that baffle his more conventional colleagues. ýA Touch of Frostý, the first in a five-novel series by playwright and former comedy writer, R.D. Wingfield, is an engrossing whirlwind of rape victims, body bags and multiple suspects that drive Frost and Webster, his newly-demoted side-kick, over four sleepless days and nights.

Utilizing plain language, expert composition and the bawdy humour that is the seriesý hallmark, Wingfield deftly steers the plotýs interwoven complexities, such that the reader is immediately hooked by this irresistible page-turner. The entire cast of characters, from the odious Commander Mullett to the unwashed derelict, Wally Peters, is vividly and believably drawn. And, as befits the title, a chilling frost clings to the gruesome crime scenes and suitably shrouds the corpse-strewn town.

A word of caution, however: The relentless irreverence and grim humour that limns virtually every page of this novel are bound to offend some sensibilities and annoy others, especially those readers accustomed to drawing-room mysteries, or to the literary school of detective fiction. But for those of us with the wit and the grit, the Frost books are a refreshing and welcome throwback to an earlier style, when the protagonist was not a recovering alcoholic with dysfunctional offspring, but was simply an honest copper who went out and got the job done, with a minimum of fuss. Highly recommended.

My first Frost book won't be my last!.......2003-01-15

Having seen the tv show from the UK, I was intrigued (but not surprised) to learn there is a book series behind the program. The book keeps you guessing not only about "whodunit," but also about whether or not the crimes are inter-related. Frost's character is amusing, as is his co-workers' reactions to him. I think there is more than a little shock value in Wingfield's humor. All in all, an entertaining read! I can't wait to get started on the rest of the novels!

A caricature of the series.......2002-03-25

Another frost mystery. Not so well done. This series may develop into a caricature of itself if the author is not careful about exaggerating the faults and pettiness of the commanding officers. Frost is investigating a local junkie's death, unpopular Detective Inspector Jack Frost watches things go from bad to worse as he stalks a runaway teenager, a burglar, a hit-and-run driver, and a tabloid criminal known as the Hooded Terror.

Entertaining, but not gripping.......2000-07-31

Detective Inspector "Jack" Frost is the subject of a popular television series in the UK. The character was awarded a medal for bravery (due to a foolish mistake) and dominates the TV series. Although RD Wingfield has written only four books, the many plots contained in them have been cannibalised for many episodes of the TV series.

This is the first Frost book I have read. Beginning with Frost attempting to attend a retirement party and failing as he is required to attend a number of crime scenes, it sets up a number of interlinking (and sometimes not) plots (the investigation of the death of a tramp, the disappearance of a girl, a rape inquiry). The different plots give a misleading depth to the novel, though Wingfield handles the plots reasonably (although without the mastery of James Ellroy, Ian Rankin, or Reginald Hill). However, at times there is too much happening

Wingfield, as one would expect from a former script writer for British comedian Kenneth Williams, is also a funny writer, although sometimes the jokes teeter into offensiveness.

The novel is strong on the tedium of much police procedural work, and perceptive on police politics (similar to office politics in most jobs).

However, the novel is heavily dependent on the character of Frost. Other characters fit neat stereotypes, or are too poorly drawn to give credibility, and the depth given to Frost with some subtle nuances (notably in the conclusion) merely emphasise, how two dimensional other characters are.

This is an enjoyable novel, but not gripping. It is not, to this reviewer, in the first level of modern British genre fiction.

A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain.......2007-05-07

In 2006 our county was challenged to read "Captains Courageous" in preparation for the "Tall Ships" event that summer. I have to admit I seldom read fiction. I like to learn something when I read. If I want to be entertained, I'll watch TV or go to a movie. The local Library arranged for Dr. Engel to be the guest speaker and give his take on Kipling. It was the nost enthralling talk I have ever been priviledged to hear! Our "county read" this year was "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitsgerald. Dr. Engel was our guest speaker again. I was able to tell him personally how much I have enjoyed his book and CDs! The CDs are great for travelling time listening. His essays on famous authors cannot be topped!

I started reading this book while recovering from surgery and finished it in two days. When I'd finish reading about one author, I couldn't wait to read the next. A wonderful book that I can't wait to pass on to all my friends.

A Dash of Biography & A Touch of Wit.......2003-05-26

I really didn't know what to expect when I picked this book up. A friend heard the author lecture on Shakespeare and bought a copy for our daughter, a Ph.D. candidate in English (Shakespeare). She sent it to us to deliver, since she didn't have our daughter's address. My wife and I both read a little bit, and then decided we had to read it all. Our daughter will have to write a thank-you for a used book.
Engel belongs to the school of biographical literary criticism, and thinks that authors' works are influenced strongly by their lives and the times in which they live them. The brief, and partial sketches of these nineteen literary greats are based on his classroom lectures. All I can say is that I wish he had been one of my teachers. These lectures in writing are cleverly written, with a very pleasing dry wit, and are informative while being interesting. Do you know the origin of the term "box office" and the actors' wish to "break a leg"? You will after you read Engel's snapshot of Shakespeare. And no one ever told me before that Chaucer was satire. Finding this book was a fortuitous accident. I hope my daughter enjoys it as much as I did.

What your Literature teacher never taught you.......2002-12-17

If you've ever heard one of Dr. Engel's lectures, you know what a captivating storyteller he is. Now, for the first time, the content of his lectures has been put into book form. You can almost hear his voice as you read through the pages of this book.

As other reviewers have already stated, A Dab of Dickens is a collection of short biographical sketches of over a dozen of the greatest authors of all time. What is unique about these sketches is that, although they are short, they are filled with fascinating tales about the lives of our most beloved authors - tales that I am sure most of us did not ever know. For instance, I was fascinated to find that when he was only 3 years old, Edgar Allan Poe was forced to sit on the front row of the theatre and watch his mother, who played Juliet, stab herself and "die" - eight times a week. No wonder he wrote the kind of macabre stories that he did!

The great thing about Dr. Engel's new book is that it gives you just enough to keep your interest, it doesn't overwhelm you, and it makes you want to know more. You want to keep reading the chapter on Poe because you just cannot believe that even more horrible things could have possibly happened to one person. You may be bored by Ernest Hemmingway (for instance), but you don't mind reading his entire chapter because it's not information overload. And at the end of this wonderful book you have a list of authors whose major works you now cannot wait to read.

If you love literature and are fascinated by the authors who have brought us so many priceless works of art, this book is for you. If you don't know much about literature at all but are curious to find out more, this book is for you as well. But this book is also perfect for the person who hated English class in high school, avoided literature like the plague in college, and has been glad to forget it completely ever since. I promise that even you will find something fascinating and inspiring among the pages of this book.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I would recommend this book to anyone going into medical practice, private or academic. This book is very practical and covers a wide range of topics, including choosing a practice location, designing your practice, malpractice issues, and complying with federal & health care regulations. I really enjoyed reading this book & wish that it had been available earlier in my career. This book would make an excellent gift for medical students as well as those already with established practices.
