A good book for the beginner, nothing too complicated, don't expect stunning displayes for buffets etc.
why paperback?.......2005-09-12
I love hardcover for culinary books.Economic issues explain my question. In this particular book ,which use demands it opened all the way,the hard cover cries for help!
The step-by-step photos are fantastic.
Be prepared for Xmas.
Great introduction........2003-07-05
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Garnishes, starts with a brief presentation of the utensils necessary for the preparation of garnishes, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of food decoration, from savory garnishes to fruit and sweet garnishes. Two special sections at the end of the book are dedicated to the "how to"s of serving savory and sweet garnishes, respectively. Note that most garnishes are be edible - and this slim volume contains many great suggestions, from classics such as various fruit and vegetables cut into fans, carrots and cucumbers cut and curled in multiple other shapes, bacon rolls, radish roses, as well as pastry and chocolate garnishes, to less traditional variations like leek bows, potato and lemon baskets, lobster butterflies, lemon swans, onion waterlilies, mango hedgehogs and lime camelias. (The sole exceptions from the "edible" rule contained here are waxed and sugared flowers.)
From slivered almonds to zucchini twists, this collection of recipes is a great introduction to the infinite possibilities of dressing up a meal - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.
Simple but Useful.......2002-11-03
This book is full of simple little ideas for sprucing up any dish. None of the garnishes are very difficult, but they contribute so much to the eye appeal of any meal, and subconsciously, they contribute to the taste. (If it looks good, your mind subconsciously tells you it is good.) I would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to add just a little flair to their meals, but doesn't want to have to learn any fancy knife cuts or buy any special equipment/blades.
Definitly for beginners!.......2001-09-13
This book considered is easy. When I take a glance at this book the garnishing techniques are often seen in dishes serve in regular restaurant. So to be honest this book isn't fill with glamour decoration. The garnishes are easy & you can make it yourself by looking at the first glance. Easy step by step guide with fully colored pictures. The level of difficulty for cutting and carving are none but surely helps to improve your food appearances. For those who know nothing about garnishing this book can be a starter. But for others that want fancy styles and more on 'how to garnish' better look some place else.

Food Art: Garnishing Made Easy.......2007-01-27
The book was received in excellent condition. However, it was too advanced for the use of teaching a beginners class. I think it will be of use in our kitchen, but not as I had intended.
He LOVES it!.......2006-09-16
Not only was the book cheaper on Amazon than the bookstores but I ordered this book for my boyfriend from here and I got it earlier than expected so that was great! He says it has great step-by-step images and that's a positive for him since he learns more from visuals. Also, it has instructions that he's able to follow and understand.
We both just wish it had more "food art" in the book but, overall, it's a great book!
Easy and Elegant.......2006-07-01
I am a caterer "wannabe" who has been doing food art for family and friends for some time and found this book to be a great launching tool for ideas. The carvings I enjoy the most are the potato flowers (very easy), tomato roses, & carrot tulips. Also, the photos of vegetable and cheese and cracker trays have been indispensible and well accepted when I imitated these in my displays. I would definitely recommend this book to both beginner and professional alike.
unrealistic and over the top.......2006-03-13
If you were the chef on a cruise ship, these techniques might be useful, but if you're setting out a buffet at home or as a caterer, you'd be insane to bother with this garish and elaborate nonsense. If you want people to actually eat your food, make it approachable; Nobody's going to go near it if they're afraid to ruin your work of "art". Even the photos on the cover of this book look overdone and artificial... not at all appetizing.
Food Art that is quick and easy!.......2005-03-08

Disappointing.......2006-08-14
This book has limited garnishing techniques shown... and many of the instructions are incomplete. There are good garnishing books out there. I have several. One of my favorites is "Gourmet Garnishes" by Mickey Baskett. There are other good ones too. This book isn't a good choice.

Book Description
Brooklyn girl Lili Marino has found herself starting over in the tiny village of Walden Corners, New York, where she has the time and space to cultivate her first love: crafting gourds. She's also becoming surprisingly expert at cutting to the rotten heart of a mystery.
Lily is just starting to feel welcomed in Walden Corners when she finds the local high school football coach dead on the first day of hunting season. She had naively thought the most dangerous thing she would have to deal with was a moldy gourd--not a murderer.

A Promising Series First.......2007-07-30
I found this book a very hopeful beginning of a new series. As for any series, there is a lot to introduce in the first one, and much gets glossed over, presumably to be fleshed out in later volumes. We meet the main character, Lili, a transplanted city gal now in a rural village, hoping to spend her time crafting beautiful objects from gourds. As a woodcarver and pyrographer myself, I found the references to gourds right on, and quite fascinating. We also meet Nora, whose husband is found dead early in the story.
Less well defined are three other woman friends of Nora's (and hopefully of Lili's), a mystery wheeler-dealer nobody has ever seen, a possible love-interest, and the local law enforcement contact - also a woman. I hope to see most of these characters given a lot more dimension in subsequent installments.
The mystery is a bit thin, and Lili does do a few really dumb things, but I don't read books like this for the mystery or for the great procedural accuracy - I leave those to other series actually dedicated to those sorts of things. I read these stories to enjoy a mild mystery and to enjoy getting to know the characters and their particular interests. For that, this little novel does just fine. I gave it only four stars, leaving somewhere to go for subsequent books.
I did find the proofreading distractingly lacking - wrong words, wrong tenses, missing words - all things an automatic spell checker would miss. I hereby volunteer to Ms. Bruce for her next installments, which I am eagerly anticipating.
the gourdmother.......2007-02-18
As far as cozies go, this book is probably one of the better ones. I just don't think the book was for me. I didn't really take to the gourds, and I found it to be a peculiar theme for a cozy. I actually thought the mystery got a little lost in the book, and the end was predictable. As usual, the heroine comes face to face with the killer, and she has to find a way out or something of the sort. That theme is just too played out in this genre.
I will say that I appreciated the mentions of 9/11 and the very real depiction of grief from Nora. I found her friends' reaction to be quite refreshing, as they were authentic. Again, the book was pretty good, but it just wasn't my style.
Enjoyable, but put-off.......2005-11-20
I really am enjoying the story line and characters of this book but am totally put-off by the absense of some of the prepositions and articles of normal writing. Is it the author or the proofers? I don't like having to inject words myself as I read. It breaks my concentration. Is the author a real person or is this a computer-generated story? I'm kind of put-off by all the "anonymous and pseudonym-type" authors today. Publishers, please proof-read and maybe you'll have a great series.
Excellent.......2005-10-08
It's been quite a while since I've read such a satisfying mystery. Nowadays I'm demanding more of them than just a puzzle with a dead body, and "The Gourdmother" delivers. Lili Martino, feeling her way in a new environment, remains steadfastly herself--loyal, generous and darn-near fearless. The tragedy of her best friend's husband's death spurs Lili into relationships and situations that uncover not only the mystery, but also Lili herself.
"The Gourdmother" is the perfect blend of characters and plot--and a riveting mystery as well. It's hard for me to believe that this is Maggie Bruce's first book. I'll certainly look for more from this talented author.
fine amateur sleuth who-done-it.......2005-09-07
Former long time Brooklyn resident Lili Marion wonders how a city gal can be street smart when she lives in a place without streets when she earned the cottage as remittance from Tom Ford for developing a mutual fund perspective. Besides her philosophical musings, she enjoys living in Walden Corners, New York though most of the residents remain leery of a city slicker. She makes friends with Nora Johnson and likes the open space for her to convert gourds into works of art or useful pretty functions.
On the first day of hunting season, someone kills Nora's husband Coach. Lili fears she heard the scream of death, which she originally assumed was a nightmare. As she gathers her wits about her, Lili decides to investigate the homicide of the spouse of her only upstate friend not realizing she sets herself up as a prime target.
Though readers will question why Lili had to investigate the murder even with her best local pal involved and threatened, fans will appreciate this fine amateur sleuth who-done-it. Lili brings her Brooklynese into her inquiries that drive the local police crazy as she interferes in their investigation. Readers will appreciate this urban take no prisoner protagonist as she seeks to uncover the identity of the killer while providing the audience with a glimpse including making a pendant into the world of gourds.

Book Description
In the Palace of Repose is a collection of nine such stories, ranging from the delightfully fantastic "In the Palace of Repose," to the delicately horrific "One of the Hungry Ones," to the hauntingly literary "The Other Grace." Here indeed are young women, and young men, who have seen too much, and who have been abandoned to wrestle alone with the strange, the wonderful, the terrifying. Some triumph, some tragically fail. Most struggle on beyond the boundaries of their stories, carrying their wonders and horrors into their lives, into their worlds - worlds, and lives, startlingly like our own.

Excellent primer! A brief, concise Introduction to A&P! .......2006-10-14
Donald C. Rizzo has done an excellent job in making this book. If you never took A&P in college, and you want to learn the subject on your own for whatever reason, this is the book to start with, hands down. It does exactly what the title implies; it covers the fundamentals without a lot of wordiness, making the material easier to retain. My point: you definitely learn the subject, and fast! The book is so easy to read, its like a novel. I simply couldn't put it down. By following the mantra to independent study and learning (repetition, repetition, repetition), I believe I am as competent in the subject as anyone who took one year of A&P (as far as the fundamentals go), due to the fact that the text is straightforward, concise, and well written. I haven't found a recognizable mistake in the text yet. I also recommend buying the study guide, which helps retention.
However, I consider this book a primer, because other textbooks I've examined, such as Thibodeau and Patton's "Anatomy & Physiology (5th)," and John W. Hole Jr.'s "Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology (6th)," explain the material in somewhat greater detail, with more to learn. But so do the A&P books used in medical school courses. The bottom line is this: once you have gotten the fundamentals from Rizzo's book stabilized in your memory, you can step up to the larger, more detailed texts, not just the two mentioned above, but even the texts used in medical school. That is what makes Rizzo's book an excellent primer to the subject.
Recommended Book.......2005-10-21
I appreciate how Donald Rizzo explains the assortment of topics in his book. At first I considered I would be turned off to all the information to learn. I found how he explained cephalad, caudal, medial and lateral with much clearness. The examples of how to use each one was uncomplicated to learn from. The Integumentary System and Nervous System chapters were complex to a degree. This subject is not as easy as intro to biology. This book ranks high in my mind. Other recommendations.....
