Book Description

During the English Age of Reason, a woman cloistered since birth learns that knowledge is no substitute for experience.

Raised by her father in near isolation in the English countryside, Emilie Selden is trained as a brilliant natural philosopher and alchemist. In the spring of 1725, father and daughter embark upon their most daring alchemical experiment to date—attempting to breathe life into dead matter. But when Emilie—against her father’s wishes—experiences the passion of first love, she is banished to London, where she soon discovers she knows nothing about human nature—or her own family’s complicated past. So begins her shocking journey to enlightenment.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely atmospheric.......2007-09-12

This book is one of the most gothic I've ever read and it's done extremely well. I've always considered Jane Eyre to be the pinnacle of gothic and I have to say that this book is very successful in being nearly as atmospheric as that work. I really felt like I was transported into Emilie's world. This was, for me, the high point of what is a well-written and engrossing novel, even though I figured out some of the plot revelations well before the author wrote about them.

Emilie is an interested and rather complex character. I'm not sure I exactly sympathized with her. I certainly found her situation sympathetic and I thought the constraints with which she was raised were very harsh. Still, she at times acts so irrationally that I found it hard to relate to her. She's certainly the type of person who's extremely intelligent and yet very much lacking in common sense--which only stands to reason when considering the fact that she is isolated from nearly all society throughout her whole life. Still, there were times when I wondered if she had a brain in her head and she was often far too passive for my liking. She seemed so detached from her circumstances that I think this is why I couldn't really relate to her. I'm not sure if this was intentionally done but it actually works given the setting of the novel. I didn't necessarily like Emilie but I didn't dislike her either and I found her story extremely compelling.

What also interested me about this novel was the author's unvarnished look at the times in which Emilie lived. I liked how she stripped away the sparkling veneer or society and showed how shallow and indifferent the rich often were to the plight of the poor. The character that best exemplifies this is Aislabie and it is the casual indifference of characters like him that give this novel so much resonance and such a gothic flavor. The members of this novel's high society are so busy trying to make money or holding card parties or building themselves stylish mansions that they don't have time to deal with the very real issues suffered by their social inferiors.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover.......2007-07-03

Overall this book was a good read. It was well written, interesting (although those of you looking for a book on alchemy will find yourselves stuck in a romance), and had good historical detail. I was somewhat disappointed with the characters. Although at times I felt emotion for them, it was hard to fall in love with any one. Their flaws were all too apparent to love. The book took me about four hours to read, and I must say I was quite hooked towards the ending. Those of you looking for a well written historical romance will enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars good try, but falls short.......2007-04-29

The period detail is authentic as is the voice of the narrator, but the conflicts and plotline are predictable and less than compelling.

A young woman unfamiliar with the ways of the world overlooks a worthy man for a pretty, unreliable one, stumbles and begins a long slide... and then finds her way back to the light.

Stories are retold all the time, and retold in such a way that they feel fresh and interesting. This is not such a case.

4 out of 5 stars Madame Bovary Meets Gone With The Wind.......2007-03-09

Lol, okay, perhaps a little over-the-top of a way to summarize, but those were the novels that came to mind after finishing this.
I wish the book were longer, with more character exploration. I know virtually nothing about alchemy, so I was not disappointed that the book wasn't more involved with it, though I did learn some things about that 'field'.
For its somewhat predictability, I couldn't give it five stars, but I loved it nonetheless. The author's prose is beautiful, I will try reading more of her.

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive and clever.......2006-11-11

I didn't know what to expect from this book, and I was afraid it would be some superficial meddling in alchemy, as it is so trendy to do nowadays. Instead I discovered that the author was not only very knowledgable about the topic of natural philosophy in general, and alchemy in particular but also that she did not use this knowledge to show off but rather to tell us a very human tale about love and a strange human experiment. It was very convincing and as someone who is quite familiar with this ideological background I felt that I got the right quantity and right quality of science behind the story. And the story was very touching, believable, not simplifying the characters and situations, and the lack of a 100 per cent happy end just makes it more human and believable. I will surely read it again.

Forensic geologist Em Hansen might finally be falling in love again. But just as she's getting closer to FBI agent Jack Sampler, he takes off on a mysterious assignment. When he doesn't return Em believes he's in trouble but only knows two things about where he's gone: Florida and killer dust. But what's the connection between the FBI and dust particles that move invisibly across the Atlantic?Risking her relationship, she goes to Florida, only to find out he's not the only person missing. A rogue scientist researching dust has also vanished-and all the signs point to foul play. Em gets a crash course in the science of dust and quickly learns there's more to the mystery than meets the eye. Two missing men are only the beginning in a larger plot of drug smugglers and global terrorism that threatens countless lives. Truth, like dust, is hidden to the naked eye, and Em must use all the tools of geology to look beneath the surface to find her boyfriend and prevent a depraved attack before it's too late.

1 out of 5 stars Glad it wasn't just me.......2006-05-11

I was glad to read that other people were disappointed in this book for the same reasons I'd list. Just to show how convoluted this book was, I thought the guy collecting the dust samples turned out to have jumped instead of being pushed! The other reviewers are right...too much going on, and not as good as the other books in the series. And honestly, while Ms. Andrews has my sympathy for going through what must have been a horrific experience, that level of self-disclosure is not what I expected when I chose this book. I just wanted an interesting mystery story with some intriguing science.

3 out of 5 stars An off day for Em.......2006-02-04

Okay, this is not the best book in the series, but if you're a fan it's worth reading since so much important stuff happens to her friends and the next books will build on those happenings.

My problems with this volume--too much coarse language out of too many characters mouths, none of the other books had this problem. Did the editor request this for 'grittiness'?. It doesn't work. I'm a geologist and I've been known to cuss out drillers and others in my time, but when I curl up with a delicious Sarah Andrews book I find bad language offensive. And there was a bit too much CIA type skullduggery and personal angst, too little scientific cleverness. The gamesmanship in the academic and gov't community was interesting though.

Read it, enjoy the flavor of her adventures in the Seminole country, and press on to Earth Colors or any of the other books.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Disparate Plots, But Still Excellent!!!.......2004-06-05

I read the previous Em Hanson book as my introduction to Andrews' forensic geology novels. I loved it so much that I was disappointed when it ended. I was so happy to find Em's story continued in this new novel, Killer Dust. I also ordered her previous novels, which I haven't yet read, just on the strength of the one novel I read. Andrews is an excellent writer.

Certain things about this novel were fantastic and exciting, while other things were disappointing and confusing. What I loved most about this novel was the science. I had never heard about the dust blowing across the Atlantic, from Africa, forming the basis of the soil in all the Caribbean Islands, turning sunsets redder from Venezuela to Miami, and even transporting live locusts from Africa, as well as dangerous pathogens which kill Caribbean coral and dust which gives severe asthma to Caribbean Islanders-especially the dramatic increases in the dust since 1970. Em Hansen's character reads some books, mentioned by name, that gave me a good starting point to research all this on the internet. I easily found confirmation of everything she mentioned in the book. It's all really fascinating and based on excellent science. Furthermore, I found it of particular interest since I live in Africa--in Morocco, where all this dust originates--while I also have family in Florida. Most of the book takes place in Florida, and I learned many things about that state I did not know, in spite of having visited there.

What I did not like about this particular book was that it left too many loose ends, and I wound up feeling confused about some of the things that had happened. I felt like there was something wrong with me, that I had to go back and reread a number of parts, trying to make sense of what was happening. I felt much better after going to Amazon.com and reading that other reviewers had the same problem. It is mainly only the last third of the book that gave me this problem. I think the book has some great ideas and plots, but that the problem is the author has tried to put TOO MANY separate plots into the same book. Maybe she could have separated the plots into two different books, and it might have worked better. She has tried to combine NASA, U.S. politics, George Bush and the War on Terrorism, the blowing African dust question, and anthrax and bioterrorism, together with the main character's personal life with her disappearing boyfriend, and stalking of a woman astronaut. It's just too many disparate things for one novel. The thing that really did bother me at the end of the book was that I could just never figure out, even with looking back and rereading, WHO pushed Calvin Wheat (the African dust researcher) off the cruise ship, and WHY!!! I also felt very confused by the whole commando-island scene, not making a lot of sense out of what was happening, or why, or to whom, even after rereading it three times. I'm still waiting to find out MORE about Leah, Jack's mother. Maybe the NEXT novel will be able to answer some of these questions, in retrospect.

Her last chapter explains a bit about why the issue of stalking is in the novel. The author explains that she herself, in her real life, was the victim of stalking for years, and that the police could/would do little to help her. She wanted to bring these issues to the forefront. She did do that, but I feel that if that was what she wanted to highlight, she should have made that about half the book, with one other major plot, such as the African dust, OR the anthrax question, OR the war on terrorism and U.S. politics. She was just too ambitious in this book. Correct treatment of all these plots would require a longer thriller, as opposed to a mystery.

This was still a good book, and I still found it difficult to put down, in spite of the problems. If you are interested in science, stalking, or just the character of Em Hansen, read this book anyway. I am sure there will be more Em Hansen novels coming (as the book ends with her finding Jack, but we are still waiting to see what happens with their relationship). So if you like Em Hansen, definitely read this book so that you don't have a gap in your knowledge of what has happened to their relationship before the next book.

3 out of 5 stars Em Hansen needs to grow up.......2004-03-16

Em Hansen and cohorts venture to Florida in this mixed up mystery of African dust clouds, stalking, the space shuttle and anthrax. Sarah Andrews has gotten progressively better at the craft of writing and the middle of this book is eminently readable. Unfortunately the book is also highly flawed. For those unfamiliar with Em Hansen, she sometimes refers to herself as a "forensic geologist," but she is actually a mostly unemployed geologist that sometimes tries to solve mysteries. One of the problems of this series of books is that Em seems to be just drifting along, going nowhere in particular. She needs to find a job that will allow her to do her detective work. Perhaps she could be a private investigator to geologists (sort of like "trainer to the stars") or maybe an FBI agent. In this book, there are three main characters--none of which are gainfully employed! Em never seems to make it through any of her novels with a job, and the pretense here is that she might become a graduate student. She is NOT a forensic geologist--in fact, at one point in this novel there is some forensic geology to be done--and Em hands it off to real experts. At the end of this novel, there is no plot resolution and the separate plot lines are left separate and mostly unexplained. Still, Em Hansen is an interesting character and worth continuing into future, hopefully better-plotted, novels. The author should be given some leeway given the revelation that she tells us about in the afterword.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth reading.......2003-07-14

The reader from Lawrence, Kansas, should have been Sarah Andrew' editor both in Fault Line and Killer Dust. (Both plot lines are weak, and the collaboration of a more skillful editor would have been very helpful.)

However, I enjoyed both books very much because I love the solid science and geology that enjoyably informs a nonscientist like myself, Ms Andrews' brilliant descriptions of the physical world, and her uncanny ability to remind me that thoughtful, caring, and intelligent human beings are forced to make difficult, sometimes dangerous, moral choices in a chaotic and ever changing world.

In Killer Dust I was delighted by the fact that Ms Andrews' dared to be political! I found myself cheering when she took some well-deserved shots at the foolish and self-serving ways of America's leaders, both scientific and political.

Finely, Em is Em-tough, impetuous, emotional, foolish, intelligent, loving, loyal, crazy, stubborn, insightful, tenacious, ethical, exasperating, and real. I'll keep reading Ms Andrews' books as long as Em Hansen leads the way.

5 out of 5 stars This book left me scratching my head .. . . .......2007-01-27

. . . and wondering how Reviewer mcHAIKU survived all the trauma of Wars & Pestilence and lived to be 80 without becoming paranoid. (?) My blithe attitude may have to make an about face with one granddaughter studying in the San Andreas Fault area, another beginning studies in the vicinity of the New Madrid Fault, plus a family living in Indiana's Tormado Alley.

This book may be referred to with unhappy frequency. For 'head-scratching' there is plenty to be learned on pages 208-214, some of it rather revolting. The authors are practiced information-gatherers & they also offer lots of remedies. That's to balance the scary parts. It helps to have a good index & plenty of references in the EndNotes, to which you can add by stuffing your copy with newspaper & magazine clippings.

This reader is careful now to heat water for ONLY two minutes in the microwave, and my eye will scan more carefully the labels of toilet cleaners. The fire-builder in the family will be quizzed about chances that our wood-burning stove is a potential threat for carbon monoxide poisoning. I do applaud the authors for their challenge to adults on page 252, to "TURN OFF THE TV & GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!"

The book is formatted to encourage you to THOROUGHLY read all sections. In a race for time to get this re-mailed to the studious one in Santa Cruz, I admit to some skimming. I'll doubtless give up and order another copy. Who of us doesn't have a hang-up or two, anyway?

5 out of 5 stars Blending humor with authentic hazards.......2002-12-05

Blending humor with authentic hazards, this tells how to cope with feelings of terror over everything from dust mites and meteorites to solar flares and poisoning. These are everyday hazards for the most part: the authors assess the severity of these threats and offer suggestions for overcoming them.

              Book Description

Asbestos was once known as the 'magic mineral' because of its ability to withstand flames. Yet since the 1960s, it has become a notorious and feared 'killer dust' that is responsible for thousands of deaths and an epidemic that will continue into the millennium. This is the first comprehensive history of the UK asbestos health problem, which provides an in-depth look at the occupational health experience of one of the world's leading asbestos companies - British asbestos giant, Turner and Newall. Based on a vast company archive recently released in American litigation, Magic Mineral to Killer Dust gives an unprecedented insight into all aspects of the asbestos hazard - dust control, workmen's compensation, government regulation, and the development of medical knowledge. In particular, it looks at the role of industrialists, doctors, factory inspectors, and trade unionists, highlighting the failures in regulation that accompanied the commercial development of a material that was already known to be lethal at the start of the twentieth century.

                TRUMP CARD

Reality wasn't what it used to be. Life after life, as man, woman, and child, Cory Maddox was trapped in an endless cycle of ever-changing realities, on the run from his ruthless companions and from the shadowy figures that seemed to exist outside the increasingly unstable matrix.

As each new world proved increasingly bizarre, Cory wanted nothing more than to find the way home. Fragments of knowledge--a mysterious UFO crash, alien technology, glimpses of a computer that was controlling his fate--all pointed toward Matthew Brand, the virtual reality genius. But Brand had vanished long ago, into, or perhaps beyond, the borders of reality.

To break the cycle of cyber-reincarnation, Cory had to find Brand--before the actions of his enemies destroyed reality altogether . . .

4 out of 5 stars Wrapped Up - but Why?.......2001-05-29

I enjoyed the first two books of the trilogy. I found this last one a bit more fantastic than what had come before. It almost moved into Piers Anthony territory, but without the puns. Yes, we encounter "realities" (Everything you think you know is wrong) where not just politics and technological evolution are different, but the "human" species has evolved differently, too. Fun to play with these speculative worlds, but not as entrancing (for me) as the ones that more nearly paralleled _this_ world.

And yes, the reader finally gets the Holy Grail in this novel, but is it really anything more than just another cup? It doesn't matter, the quest was a lot of fun. We even got a bit of character development in the process. The worst thing about this book is how hard it is to get ahold of. It took me three months to track one down. If you're contemplating reading the trilogy (a worthwhile endeavor), then make certain you have a copy of this book in your hands before you begin!

4 out of 5 stars Ghost-written with the ghost of Philip Dick?.......2000-02-28

Actually, Chalker manages to incorporate his favourite themes: that stagnation leads to Hell, his fascination with how much power corrupts, and what some call an obsession with transformation. If nothing else, his "first world" in this book brilliantly analyses what would happen if women really did have power. David Brin did an equally good (albeit different) job, and few others have avoided the standard clichés. As a conclusion to his most paranoid trilogy, the book is brilliant, up to the last chapter. Fans of the late Phil Dick (of whom I am one) should recognise it as the last chapter of Dick's own book UBIK. This lack of originality nonetheless fits in with one of the most paranoid trilogies I have ever read.

                5 out of 5 stars Chalker's best to date.......1999-10-15

This is fantastic stuff. I read through the whole series very quickly, always wanting to see what happened next. Chalker is a great storyteller, with excellent character development and retroactive exposition that will continue after you have finished the book, while you wonder just what the "real" reality is. BTW, I think "The Matrix" _did_ steal heavily from this series.

                4 out of 5 stars Mind-twisting as usual........1998-07-03

I really enjoyed both this book and the series in general. It has been yet another fine work by Chalker, although, like most of his works, it quickly becomes very confusing if you aren't paying attention. Or sometimes if you are. I would have liked a better ending, but it was, at least, appropriate.

                    Book Description

Drawing on her extensive training in yoga therapy, dance, and meditation, Bija Bennett has created a groundbreaking yoga program that takes full advantage of the body-mind connection. Based on the classical eightfold path of yoga, Emotional Yoga offers a broad range of simple body-mind techniques that can positively affect our emotional well-being, including the dynamic interplay of movements, breathing exercises, meditations, lifestyle skills, rituals, gestures, and healing sounds. Each technique is presented in a way that is true to Bennett's background in the tradition of Viniyoga, which allows the reader to adapt the program to his or her specific needs.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Approach to the 8 Limbs.......2004-05-21

Bija Bennett has a unique voice in her interpretation of the 8 Limbs of Yoga and overall I found it was valuable food for thought. This is a book that many Western practitioners of yoga might find speaks to them in very clear language. This book focuses on the more viceral emotional elements of Yoga as a practice that is not only based on the postures.

Though this is not an in depth manual for learning the physical postures, it does have some sequenced practices that can be used for different purposes (such as energizing, or tonifying etc.). Her asana practice sections are very sound incorporating dynamic movement (where you move into and out of poses several times with the breath). This stays true to her viniyoga roots (she is a student of Gary Kraftsow I believe who is the most well known teacher of Viniyoga in the west). Viniyoga is a practice taught by TKV Desikachar (which was developed by Deskachar's father T. Krishnamacharya who was also the teacher of B.K.S. Iyengar, P. Jois and others).

I particularly like her section on Pranayama. It's simple and concise and very user friendly. You can apply the techniques quite easily whereas some books on Pranayama are a bit "long winded" :)

Also, she has a section called "An Emotional Walkabout" which is a series of questions that relate to her eight limbed approach and I think it is very helpful. It helps you work through any particular situation you may be dealing with.

Basically you really look at whatever you are dealing with from various angles (there are options within each eight steps so that you can use that which is most suitable to your situation) and the purpose is that it helps you really integrate the situation in a skillful "real life" way. This may be used to come to grips with (perhaps accepting) something you are dealing with or it may be used to let go of unskillful emotions regarding something. This lets you integrate it, learn from it and move on from it.

Anyway, If you are interested in giving yourself another way of looking at the deeper practices of Yoga, then I think this would be a very worthwhile book for you. Bija Bennett definitely has a distinctive personality and perspective to this ancient practice.

Also recommended are Stephen Copes "Yoga and The Quest For The True Self" (and his companion CD's "Yoga For Emotional Flow" which are excellent), Darren John Main's "Yoga and The Path of The Urban Mystic" and Donna Farhi's "Bringing Yoga To Life". All the previous books are not on asana but rather the internal practice of Yoga.

                    Namaste

In the passage of time, filled with the diverse and sometimes strange nature of stress and change, challenges and rewards, the divine inner quality of Life is always about, yet a bit hidden, needing only a small door to be Opened and Seen.

From the mystic soul, the ever silent wind of Grace,... there is that timeless call to stop the ignorance, quiet the mind, and Become one with the Infinite, if only for a magical second.

That is all. Be still and Behold.

From the music of Santana or Coltrane, to the smile of the Zen Master or the words of the Sages of past and present, the message is always the same.

                    Go Within.

Be it the towering winds of Chicago, the classes of UCLA, the villages of Europe and India, to the hills of San Francisco, to the sands of San Diego or the slopes of Sun Valley,... we merge into the river (dharma) of life, where ever we are.

Be it dance, meditation or yoga, the message is the same.

                    B. Bennett shows us an easy beginning to an Endless journey.
