Book Description

The magnificent second novel from the legendary author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Following the astonishing success of his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey wrote what Charles Bowden calls “one of the few essential books written by an American in the last half century.” This wild-spirited tale tells of a bitter strike that rages through a small lumber town along the Oregon coast. Bucking that strike out of sheer cussedness are the Stampers. Out of the Stamper family's rivalries and betrayals Ken Kesey has crafted a novel with the mythic impact of Greek tragedy.

2 out of 5 stars Not poolside reading........2007-07-06

This is a very difficult book to follow. Be prepared to read the same page a couple of times to understand which character is talking. One of those literary achievements that is written as a "stream of consciousness", with few chapter breaks. I think few would care to admit that they gave up on the book after 100 pages and went on to a Leon Uris novel. I am sorry if I insult all those literary snobs out there with 720s on their verbal SATs, but this is not that good a book.

Still, One Flew... is still a classic and one of my all time favorites.

112 reviews here, all positive so far as I've read.
So there's not much more praise to be added.
But I feel compelled to cast one more vote,
just for History.
This is The Great American Novel.
Put it on the shelf next to "Life on the Mississippi,"
and re-read it just as often.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Timeless.......2007-02-11

Kesey's book is at once a meditation on the individual and his place in the community, a look into labor issues, a depiction of life in a small town, and a portrait of the notion of family. The scope of "Sometimes a Great Notion" is truly ambitious, but as the reader follows Kesey's unfocused but always necessary travels, they may find themselves as much of the landscape as the grand forests the characters inhabit. If one gives this book a chance, they will be in for a memorable experience. Highest recommedation.

5 out of 5 stars 'Notion' compares incredibly to other authors.......2007-01-23

Reading through the reviews on here, I was a little scared that someone rated this as the 2nd-best book all-time behind...A Prayer for Owen Meany, as Hank Stamper would say. However, it appears to me that Kesey and Whitman were on the same drugs when they wrote, as Notion exemplifies the intense relationship with nature, freedom, and self-reliance (though also reliance on others) etc that Whitman used to describe America, or at least what America should be, in "Song of Myself." There is no question that this book is up in the running for Great American Novel along with probably Gatsby, Rye, Huckleberry, and Cuckoo. (I would also throw in either Sun Also Rises or Old Man, but neither of those are really about American themes...and actually Rye isn't as good as these others, so it's gone with apologies to all those who passionately disagree.) Anyway, for me Cuckoo's complete perfection is probably better, due to a couple complaints I have:

-The females besides Viv are pretty lame and weak. I am certainly not against misogyny(!), and it's not like Shakespeare wrote likeable females often, but basically they were just kind of lame and boring. I especially found the final paragraph of the book, dealing with two women, trite and obvious in its attempt to explicitly manifest a couple themes. After the rest of the book and the rest of the conclusion, we deserved a lot better.
-Also, I found Lee's final thoughts, while necessary, poorly executed.
-Finally, while I enjoyed basically every characters' perspective (this book is very definitely an American 100 Years of Solitude, but with more experimental writing and less experimental plot), I thought that the random thoughts perspective that began most chapters (maybe the shingler perspective except it continued after his death) to be also kind of poorly executed.

All that said, I am giving the book 5 stars and say that no one has captured America as profoundly and tragically (in the sense of what it should be) as Whitman. Kesey wins all the prizes that I am giving out. Even without the merits of its content, I don't think I have ever encountered prose so technically ambitious and perfect. The ending, apart from my quibbles, is one of the most fun things to watch come together I have ever read, despite the fact you know what is coming (again, unlike 100 Years, which although deserving of its Prize, starts to drag badly at the destined end). It's not what, it's how.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Almost Endless Hours Reading It!.......2006-08-23

I have read this book only twice in my lifetime, but it is still one of my favorites!Set in the Willamette valley of Oregon,it tells the story of a family of non-union loggers defying a strike. The characters are nothing short of fascinating, and Kesey's writing is absolutely ignorant of any traditional form,in a good way.You get totally lost in this book once it hooks you,and if you don't come away from it loving life even more than already, you need to read it again.Curl up with your favorite herbal tea and enjoy reading Ken Kesey's masterpiece and realize he worked his butt off writing it.Amen!

some one recommended this book over several of my favorites - So I was excited to crack it. It has a nice modern dense prose but... its a total downer. The tone is very grounded but its quicksand - soon youre suffocating. I typically pride myself in finishing books but this one repulsed me - I dont need to go on a negative trip like that.

Penzler Pick, April 2002: According to his publisher's statistics, the peerless Donald E. Westlake, who has made his mark both with witty capers and with gritty noir thrillers, has more than a million copies of his Mysterious Press books in print, as well as more than a million copies of his many titles in print around the world. And I'd like to go on record as saying that he deserves every bit of that success. This is a case of an immensely talented author getting his due, with the vast (and, alas, sometimes taste-impaired) reading public revealing a great discernment.

Westlake has been well and truly acknowledged by his peers over the more than four decades of his career, having, among other honors, been named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, been the recipient of the Bouchercon Lifetime Achievement Award, and been nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay of The Grifters.

His latest book, Put a Lid on It, is a far cry from his recent throat-grippers (The Hook, The Ax) and also different from his recent revivals of his earlier cold-blooded/hard-boiled Parker series (Firebreak , Flashfire) written under his Richard Stark pseudonym. It is closest in tone to his Dortmunder titles (most recently, Bad News), but it introduces a different sort of thief than the protagonist who is featured in The Hot Rock, Bank Shot, and others. Meehan, the hero of Put a Lid on It, like any other Westlake lead character, is a one-name kind of guy and is as recognizably a Westlake creation as if he were branded with a giant "W."

Smart as he is, though, Meehan wouldn't be a Westlake hero if bad luck were unknown to him. When we first encounter him, he's sitting in jail in the Manhattan Correctional Center, denied parole and stoically awaiting sentencing. Out of the blue, a chance to alter his fate presents itself when a clandestinely dispatched representative of the president's reelection campaign presents himself as Meehan's potential savior.

All Meehan has to do is come up with a workable plan to steal a hideously incriminating videotape from the upstate-New York estate of a wacko millionaire. He must find the appropriate accomplices to help him and so forth... while the clock is furiously ticking.

Fans of such sophisticated political farce as Larry Beinhart's American Hero (transferred to the screen as Wag the Dog) or Joe Klein's (a.k.a. Anonymous) Primary Colors will enjoy the twisted application of Westlake's merry cynicism to the idea of the bungled high-level cover-up. They will admire, as well, his long-perfected ability to blend incredible smartness with an ever entertaining degree of smart-aleck impudence. More Meehan, please. And more Westlake, too, for as long as he can tap the keys of the old portable typewriter on which he still works. --Otto Penzler

4 out of 5 stars Free to be Wry.......2005-12-22

I haven't had as fun a read in a long, long time. Written with the typical matter-of-fact prose endemic to the genre, Westlake infuses his crime story with a wit that keeps you chuckling from beginning to end. Our hero is, of course, a thief--a criminal quite cognizant of his social shortcomings but trustworthy in his own fashion and making his way through the world as best he can.

Where Westlake absolutely excels is in his wry exposition of the absurdities with which "straight" society seems to have no problem. In this book the criminals have to teach the politicians their own business. There is a running theme in Westlake's story that has one set of characters engaged in what they rationalize as mere dirty tricks, which the criminals recognize as simple felony conduct. As the protagonist helpfully points out--housebreaking, however noble the intent, is still burglary. And therein lies the humor--the all-powerful political operatives simply fail to see that they are engaged in a criminal enterprise. It is to be regretted, I suppose, that the typical reader will have no problem believing that political operatives think this way.

The line between acceptable (or "legal") and unacceptable (or "criminal") conduct is being redrawn. Obviously, nobody should get too exercised about a good caper story--Westlake is careful to make his bad guys not too bad and his "good" guys horribly flawed. I think that Westlake's point is that our world is trading morality for legality and losing in the bargain. What is worse? A thief who honors his promises and exercises his or her own brand of income redistribution with self-restraint or a politician who, within the law, has no problem enriching themselves with the widow's mite.

But forget the philosophy--the author's gentle tweaking of values makes the book both hilarious and thought-provoking.

2 out of 5 stars This book hardly told a "story" at all........2004-08-07

At the very beginning of the book, our hero is taken out of prison to do a job. At the very end, he's finally doing that job. The book chugs along from A to Z without a single interesting complication or change of direction or anything that would have made if feel like a "story."

This is the most padded book I can remember reading for a long time. Our hero sits down to meet with a character at a restaurant and the character wastes multiple paragraphs looking at wine lists, etc. while we just wait and wait for something to actually happen.

I should mention that I listened to the unabridged audiobook, read by William Dufris. For all I know, Dufris may be a nice guy, but here he created such broad and often annoying character voices that they distracted from what little was going on.

I've only read (well, listened to) one other Donald E. Westlake book -- Bad News -- and I really enjoyed it! Things actually happened, the plot actually made some interesting turns and I stayed entertained throughout.

In fact, I enjoyed Bad News so much that I'm going to give Westlake another chance, despite my disappointment with Put a Lid On It.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful summer week-end read.......2004-07-12

Weary of torturous plots that didn't make sense that I've been suffering through because they were "highly recommended" by people with "reputations", I reached for and started reading "Put a Lid On It" by Donald Westlake who wrote the dark "The Ax" and "The Hook". Every word of this comic caper was a joy including the dedication. I won't give you the plot (it's readily available). But let me tell you no plot summary can tell you the subtle ironic messages about our presidential election process I found in this crime caper. The ending is funny and touching. Don't miss this.

                  3 out of 5 stars Westlake Lite.......2003-12-27

Despite the introduction of the likeable Francis Meehan, this book is not up to Westlake's standards. The plot, obstensibly meant to offer a degree of political satire, is not all that exciting (indeed, the secret behind the story is sort of unimpressive) and the read is far too quick, even compared to the Dortmunder books. Westlake fans won't be angry with this, but they might wonder where the meat is.

Thankfully, we do get a good addition to the Westlake "family" of intelligent, interesting crooks and scoundrels in the form of Meehan. He carries the book through some under-written bits, and helps cover for the two-dimensionality of the politicos Meehan encounters.

However, after the dark strength of The Hook and The Ax, this one is a disappointment. Guess everyone, even Westlake, has a n off-day.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Keep a Lid on the Secret that is Westlake.......2003-12-04

This mightn't be Westlake's greatest literacy achievement but it is still pretty good. Meehan a career criminal who has spent much time behind bars hijacked a federal truck mistaking it for something else. He now faces a lifetime in a federal facility and does not look forward to it. One day a man comes to visit him telling him he is his new lawyer. Meehan sees straight through him but this does not matter he is still recruited. This man and others want Meehan to commit a crime to save the president of the USA from a scandal and if he does he will be a free man.

This is an interesting book although not Westlake's best. That title would by far go to his masterpiece the Ax. Corkscrew is another good novel as well. This one is worth reading as well but it is not in the masterpiece league of the Ax.

From the supplier: California Insurance Commissioner Charles Quackenbush has ruled that the state's Fair Access to Insurance Requirements (FAIR) plan not write any new earthquake and homeowners policies after Jun 1, 1996. The ruling is necessary because the FAIR plan, which is funded by industry and insurance premiums and functions as the state's market of last resort, currently covers more policyholders than warranted by its revenues. The 28-year-old program is in a very risky financial position, according to the Association of California Insurance Companies, which supported Quackenbush's order.

The Farmer: Blain McTavish is a Maine farmer with issues. He likes to run in the woods at night … nude. Aside from thinking he's going crazy, his health is steadily declining and no one seems to know why.

The Apprentice: Afton O'Malley is an almost powerless Druid who accompanies her mentor, the Sorceress of The Ancients, to the United States. Without the proper conjuring skills, how is she supposed to convince Blain that he's a creature of magic … half Fairy, half Druid? And how can she save him from an evil conjurer who wants him dead?

The Evil: A malevolent force won't stop until it can control the mythical creatures protected by the Sorceress of the Ancients. Blain, his uncle, the Sorceress, and her apprentice stand in the way. If small hexes and black magic won't work, then it's time to attack. And someone is going to die.

The Adventure: Can Blain accept a world of magic? Will the creatures of the Order allow him to live among them? And how can he and Afton ever have a normal relationship when some evil presence wants him dead? No matter how far away Blain runs, a horrifying being follows. And he fears it will never leave him and the woman he loves alone.

"People don't like being told what to do," says nutritionist and personal trainer Jonny Bowden. And that's the fundamental problem with weight loss programs: they are someone else's idea of what's good for you, which translates, in your mind, to deprivation and self-denial. "People don't fail when they design their own lives according to what they want to do." So Bowden helps you design an eating program for yourself that is personalized for your measurements, temperament, lifestyle, and metabolic and biochemical uniqueness.

Bowden offers his "A" food list (eat more of these), including vegetables, fish, eggs, lean meat, and "good" fats. His "B" list (reduce your intake of these) includes commercial breads, pastas, and cereals; refined oils; margarine; and sugar (including fruit juices). He advises you to control starches (including grains)--maybe one portion a day. He's "cautious" about recommending soy. He says supplements are essential.

Bowden uses much of his book to explain why, in his view, the dietary recommendations of major medical organizations are "ridiculous." He admits that he is taking on "the medical and nutritional establishment" with some of his recommendations. He disputes the Food Pyramid (accepted by all the major medical and dietetic organizations) and pronounces Dean Ornish's low-fat dietary recommendations "from the dark ages"--even though Ornish's program has been shown in published, peer-reviewed studies to reverse heart disease. He calls the carbohydrate recommendations from the "American Dietary Association" (he must mean the American Dietetic Association) "nuts."

Bowden's beginner's exercise program consists of walking and strength training. Although he hates "one size fits all" diets, he doesn't seem to mind this approach for exercise, because he tells you exactly what to do each day for eight weeks, including how many minutes to walk. The strength training is appropriate, well explained, and well illustrated. The only cardiovascular exercise is walking, and he doesn't discuss other alternatives until the appendix, and only if you're at the "advanced beginner" level or higher.

Bowden is a personal trainer and nutritionist (note: not the same thing as a registered dietician). He answers readers' questions on iVillage.com and has a popular online radio show on e-yada. --Joan Price

                                    Book Description

From America's #1 weight-loss coach and the iVillage fitness guru, a groundbreaking low-sugar, low-carbohydrate eating plan for women of all shapes and sizes.

A gifted motivator and nutritionist extraordinaire, Jonny Bowden has helped over 75,000 women lose weight successfully through his hugely popular eight-week iVillage shape-up challenges. The key to his phenomenal success is his ability to help participants take back control of the power food holds over them, and to help set goals based on what "shaping up" means to each of us.

Jonny Bowden's Shape Up! is like no other "diet" program: it takes into account personal factors such as commitment, self-esteem, body image, impulse control, and addictions, as well as issues like metabolic type, genetics, ethnic heritage, and hormones, and shows readers how to tailor consistent low-sugar, low-carbohydrate nutrition to fit individual needs. With humor and a down-to-earth style, Bowden presents realistic and simple week-by-week eating plans-as well as recommendations on vitamins, minerals, and food supplements-and the tools to customize the program for long-term success. He shows readers how to analyze food's effects on moods, cravings, and energy levels, and also demonstrates the how and why of light workout routines. A wise and empowering program, Jonny Bowden's Shape Up! will help readers everywhere take charge of their lives and make changes that will dramatically improve their health, weight, and state of mind.

For those frustrated with off-the-rack diets and an apparent inability to lose weight, this is the book for you. Refreshing, honest, and empowering.

5 out of 5 stars Makes great sense - a program that adapts to you!.......2006-07-04

I've recently completed reading Shape Up and was really inspired by the approach taken by the author. He really nails it on the head with his observation that one diet/healthy lifestyle program does not fit all. Our bodies are different, our lifestyles are different and our preferences regarding food, exercise and life goals are different. It therefore makes sense that any health program needs to be developed on an individual basis by the person him- or herself. I know what I 'should' be eating and what exercises I 'should' be doing (from the dozens of other books I have read). This book made me feel like I want to do them - it honours choice and is firmly based in reality and a wholistic approach to wellness. I recommitted myself to a healthy body and have lost 4 pounds in the last week. And I'm not feeling under the whip of any diet/exercise regime. An inspiring, informative and sensible book.

Mr. Bowden's "Shape Up!" Plan makes *intuitive* sense. Simply put, the person on the plan creates his or her own strategy to lose weight. His tool is information, and he provides great frameworks for continuing your path to good health, *as well as for creating a sound mind.*

One drawback is that, although I generally enjoy an informal writing style, I find myself annoyed at his. The text also contains way too many typos. (...Maybe it's just my edition? Is there more than one?).

I give the book 2 crooked thumbs up. Regardless of his or her weight, every person should hear what this man has to say.

5 out of 5 stars Someone finally gets it!.......2003-06-21

I read this book after realizing that the weight wasn't just going to fall off after having kids. Jonny has a different approach than many of us have heard over and over. His writing is so personable and I laughed out loud quite a few times. Many of us know people who have done great on diets. Many diets haven't worked for us. Most of us have the wrong idea of the word 'diet'. Jonny helped me figure out what worked for me and I had a lot of fun in the process. I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in their health.
