Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes unstuck in time after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.
Don't let the ease of reading fool you--Vonnegut's isn't a conventional, or simple, novel. He writes, "There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick, and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces. One of the main effects of war, after all, is that people are discouraged from being characters..." Slaughterhouse-Five (taken from the name of the building where the POWs were held) is not only Vonnegut's most powerful book, it is as important as any written since 1945. Like Catch- 22, it fashions the author's experiences in the Second World War into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. Slaughterhouse-Five boasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut's other works, but the book's basis in rock-hard, tragic fact gives it a unique poignancy--and humor.
Book Description
Slaughterhouse-Five is one of the world's great anti-war books. Centering on the infamous fire-bombing of Dresden, Billy Pilgrim's odyssey through time reflects the mythic journey of our own fractured lives as we search for meaning in what we are afraid to know.

A classic and well worth reading. Read it after it was mentioned in the movie footloose (another classic)
Best sci-fi book isn't even sci-fi.......2007-09-21
I'd have to say this is one of the best "sci-fi" books I've read but honestly I don't think it's really a sci-fi book at all. It's almost a poem, yet written in easy to understand prose. It's fantastic but only illustrates the realities and absurdities of day to day living.
This book is quite a unique experience, and even if you hate sci-fi you might pick it up since it's a different experience than the genre implies. Even satire doesn't seem to sum it up as there is a human warmth here that is absent from many other books labeled "satire."
A wandering brilliance.......2007-09-11
So fluid is Vonnegut's style that you feel yourself on a voyage whose importance and profound nature you can't stop to contemplate until it's all over and you're left breathless. "So it goes".
This is - by far - my favourite Vonnegut story and that speaks to how beautiful this story is. A poignant masterful. Read it. Enjoy it on all levels.
An Interesting Read.......2007-09-06
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1922 to 2007) was an American novelist known for works blending satire, black comedy, and science fiction, all intertwined. He was larger than life and very unconventional. He is recognised for three important novels: the present work, Cat's Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions. His main attribute as a novelist involved the ability to cross lines melding reality with science fiction and still have works that were considered important works of literature.
As a reader the most startling thing for myself was that he spends chapter one talking directly to the reader giving a background introduction to the novel, and then he uses an imaginative plot to make his point. I found the introduction a bit unsettling.
"I would hate to tell you what this lousy little book cost me in money and anxiety and time. When I got home from the Second World War twenty-three years ago, I thought it would be easy for me to write about the destruction of Dresden, since all I would have to do would be to report what I had seen. And I thought, too, that it would be a masterpiece or at least make me a lot of money, since the subject was so big."
The book is based on his own experiences as a soldier and prisoner of war, and that had a profound influence on his writings. Vonnegut witnessed the bombing of Dresden which destroyed most of the city. Vonnegut was one of seven prisoners of war in Dresden to survive in an underground meat locker of a plant known as Schlachthof Fünf or Slaughterhouse Five.
The vehicle of the story is the life of the protagonist Billy Pilgrim who takes a trip back using time travel. He uses Pilgrim to discuss life and death, and his supposed visit to the planet of Tralfamador. Billy Pilgrim is a World War II veteran who survived the Dresden bombing as did Vonnegut.
The novel is a bit odd, unique, and entertaining. I thought that Vonnegut's introduction where he talks directly to the reader was not needed but harmless, and overall the novel was a bit short as a masterpiece. But it was a unique piece of literature that made point and was an interesting read that everyone should read.
Was it on par with other short works - that are considered to be masterpieces - such as Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych or Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men? The reader can decide. I thought it was better than Steinbeck but short of Tolstoy.
Why did I wait so long to read this book?.......2007-09-04
Just buy this book. If you don't buy it, as least read it. Then you'll probably want to buy it anyway. I had high expectations with this book, and they were met.
If you're thinking about getting this, just take the advice of most of the people rating this novel, and get it.
Customer Reviews:
So it goes........2005-03-03
Slaughterhouse 5, or Slaughterhouse five, or The Children's Crusade, also called A Duty-Dance with Death, is described by the author Kurt Vonnegut's alter-ego, Billy Pilgrim as a `fourth-generation German-American now living in easy circumstances on Cape Cod [and smoking too much], who, as an American Infantry Scout Hors De Combat, As a prisoner of war, witnessed the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany, "The Florence of the Elbe," a long time ago, and survived to tell the tell. This is a novel somewhat in the telegraphic schizophrenic manner of tales of the planet Tralfamadore, where the flying saucers come from. Peace.' So it goes.
The book is an anti-war book, but tells us that it is about as useful being an anti-war book, as being an anti-typhoon book, meaning that some things will never change. Vonnegut tells us this by giving us the story of Billy Pilgrim, whose most important role in life was to witness the secret American British bombing of Dresden, where 135,000 died, and who spent most of his time as an American Prisoner of War, a survivor who can tell the youth of today what war is all about, by using his shellshock trauma induced time travel capabilities, given to him by the Tralfamadore aliens, to revisit the war, so that he can write a book about it, goes to see old war buddies, becoming unstuck in time, his life as a series of scenes in a non-linear fashion which ends up making linear sense, even though it did not at the time. So it goes.
Slaughterhouse 5 is a very interesting and somewhat touching series of events that finally all come home to roost in the final pages, the loss of man is the gain of man, whether we like it or not, is not the point, Darwin told us that this is what we are designed to do, Billy Pilgrim becomes an optometrist in the process, marries a woman who suddenly has a series problem, while Bill ends up in a zoo on an alien planet to produce children with Montana Wildhack, a famous movie actress, while trying to write his Dresdon story, filled with death, a plane accident where he was the only survivor following his POW term, fact from fiction, he thinks the rescue party are nazis, it sets off the time travel again. So it goes.
Vonnegut is not all down and war depressing however. His humour captured brilliantly by such antics as considering the money tree that grew hundred dollar bills, gems and bank bonds, feeding off the people who met the quicksand by its base, or a young Jesus who once built a cross with his father so the Romans could use it to do something to a protestor that they didn't like. When the wit is there it scores in aces. You have never read the likes of such clowning around before, although compared to Joseph Heller's Catch 22, this one is more personal, less satirical, more direct and exposes that horrible World War II bombing of Dresden. In 1941 Charles Portal, A British Air Staff officer, put forward the idea that entire cities and towns should be bombed. Air Marshall Arthur Harris agreed in February 1942. It was napalmed in 1945. Vonnegut made it very public in this 1969 novel. It was revealed by the historian David Irving in 1963 in his publication, "The Destruction of Dresdon". So it goes.
Billy spends the final days of his life out across New York looking to tell a radio show his story, ends up finding a world war II sci-fi book author's book as window dressing, attempts to buy the book as a memory keepsake because he met the author and knew the war buddy who introduced him to the books, and is nearly arrested, and or committed, old age coupled with the dying man's last bastion of whatever his mind can make of it all, gives us much to ponder in death, by remembering our lives, Pilgrim travels in his memory and says that death is living ones memories over and over again... so best be good... and enjoy life. So it goes.

I'm hooked on this series!!.......2007-09-07
Fantastic read!! Could hardly put it down. Great writing, great characters, and as one reviewer said, "More twists and turns than Lombard Street!" The clues are there, you just have to find them and put them together. I thought I had guessed the killer's identity, but I was wrong. Loved every minute of this book!
Keep the Sarah Woolson books coming, Shirley! We LOVE them!
Enjoyable Series.......2007-08-28
A historical legal mystery that is cleverly plotted with well developed characters. The second book in the Sarah Woolson series. Step back in time to 1880 San Francisco and prepare to accompany Sarah into her personal & professional life interwoven with a lot of intriguing and suspenseful mysterious events. The story moves right along keeping you interested up to the last page.
Excellent.......2007-03-12
I love this book/cd. The Russian Hill Murders are just as great as the Nob Hill Murders. I love how it's set in the 1800's. I listen to the CD's in the car to and from work. They are entertaining and make the traffic go so much faster (haha).
3-1/2 Stars for not so mysterious mystery.......2006-07-14
The Russian Hill Murders by Shirley Tallman is the second installment in the Sarah Woolson series. In this entry Sarah ends up defending a Chinese cook for two murders and representing a young widow whose husband was killed in a fire at a sweatshop. It should surprise no reader of mysteries that of course the cases are connected. Sarah works again with Robert, another young lawyer, and adds a teen-aged carriage driver named Eddie to her circle. This series is written in 1st person which creates problems for the reader. I think the main deficiency in this series is the lack of sympathy for the main character. Sarah is beautiful, wealthy, well-heeled, romantically pursued, educated, and spoiled by her family. Some characters can be all of those things and still beloved by the reader, but Sarah just comes across as headstrong and uncaring of other people's feelings. The criminal is fairly obvious through the book, even if the motive isn't, but it seems a bit foolish that Sarah is the only one to see the clues.
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!.......2006-01-17
Super mystery! Well written and full of suspense. I couldn't put it down until the very end. I thought I'd figured out whodunit, but turns out I was wrong. Kept me guessing until the last chapter.
Sarah Woolson is an out-spoken, fun, funny, well-developed and intelligent heroine. I love the way she takes charge of a situation and sticks with it until the end. I also loved Pierce Godfrey, and hope we'll see him again soon. What a hunk!!!
Keep 'em coming! Can't wait until the next book.

Ji-Ro discovers Il-Geum and realizes that Il-Geum has acquired immense power-and now is his only chance to get rid of Il-Geum for good...
Customer Reviews:
BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER.......2005-07-10
The Palace of Divine Goddesses seems to be a place that no man can enter and come out alive. Except for one, Il-Geum. It seems he was raised by these beautiful women as a child. Fresh off of his encounters with the 3 Gems of the Land, all of whom he believes are in love with him (in actuality, they want to kill him), he begins to show his own glimpses of martial skill. Meanwhile, Woon-Jung (Jade of Ice) also shows up at the palace and pays the girls to kill the person that pulled off her dress and humiliated her. They accept the bounty and only afterwards find out the offender is Il-Geum. They are duty-bound to carry out the contract, no matter what their personal feelings! Il-Geum is in a world of hurt in this second volume, and he hasn't even met the "Twin Devils of North and South" yet!
This second volume continues the light humor and slapstick of Volume 1. It's just good clean fun. Like when Il-Geum initiates one of his special attacks and it occurs behind him instead of where he aims. Or when he accuses Woon-Jung of being an exhibitionist. It's a shame that the rest of this series probably will never be published.

Customer Reviews:
If you're over 30 - BUY THIS BOOK!.......2003-03-21
"Wear and Tear" is a gem that should be on the best seller list. This book has been a real eye-opener for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help slow the damage we heap on our bodies as we age. But to be honest I've been a Dr. Arnot fan since he wrote "Guide to Turning Back the Clock", another excellent book (that needs to be updated).
I bought and started reading "Wear and Tear" because he included a chapter called "Stiff Man Syndrome" which my orthopedic surgeon jokingly said contributed to my knee damage. In "Wear and Tear" there are excellent descriptions and examples of the damage you do to your joints, far beyond what my doctor told me. The "8-Ball" metaphore of a joint alone made me see what 'full range of motion' is all about. Dr. Arnot's discussion of "forceful walking" has given me better tips than my physical therapist has on how I was ginding away my joints by walking (like Godzilla in a hurry). One suggestion I would add, in addition of the examples given in the book, is imagine you're walking on rice paper. Remember "Grasshopper" from TV's "Kung-fu"? Now I notice how everyone else is pounding away as they walk, while I glide along feeling sorry for them.
Because of "Wear and Tear" I'm in the pool working on range of motion (it feels great too, all day long), practicing walking so I don't pound my joints, doing light yoga and stretching (it is remarkably easy to get flexibility back), changed my vitamins and doing the remarkably good (and unique) exercises he illustrates.
The Amazon Editorial Review gives you a good list of subjects in the book so I won't repeat them. I would just add they are covered in a clear and concise style. You don't waste any time reading the filler found in most other health books.
If you compare what you can get out of this book to what you will spend on expensive Doctor and Physical Rehab sessions, not to mention the pain and loss of income, "Wear and Tear" is worth its weight in gold. I think Dr. Arnot has also saved me from a lot of future grief as well by cluing me in before more damage is done to my poor knees and hips. I plan on using many of the principles outlined in this book for the rest of my life.
A cure for Wear and Tear?.......2002-12-30
This book is great for people who suffer from Arthritis, who are overweight, have reducecd flexibilty, or any other pain associated with their joints. Bob Arnot, one of the authors of this book believes strongly in yoga and stretching as exercises for people suffering with pain. In his practice, he does prescribe asprin and NSAIDS, but disourages the overuse of them. He believes more in exercise. Not strenuous exercise, just exercises like bicycling, walking, or swimming. Exercise is the key to strong muscles and joints. He also gives ideas for proper footwear, no high arched shoes. The book is jumpy as you read it, but overall, it would be of good use to those who suffer with joint pain.

Customer Reviews:
Also known as "Turning Back The Clock II: The Retraction".......2006-11-24
I have to disagree with the anonymous reader who accused the book of being a commercial for glucosamine. (An endorsement is not the same thing as a commercial). I believe that the information in "Wear And Tear" will be of genuine help to people willing to try the ideas presented here.
Actually it seems to me that the proper title of this book should be "Turning Back The Clock II: Undoing the Damage from The First Book". In "Wear And Tear", Arnot talks extensively about the wear and tear on the body caused by high volume endurance exercise - which is almost exactly his prescription for health and longevity in "Turning Back The Clock". His candid descriptions of his own joint and health problems are obviously a direct result of all the running, biking and cross country exteme events he did in the previous book - although he never actually admits the connection. If you are paying attention, this tends to damage his credibility as an expert - he was 100% sure about his methods in his last book, but now he's hurting and achy, so now he's 100% sure about his new methods. Indian yoga masters and Chinese Tai Chi masters and Pilates instructors and even physical therapists around the country would laugh at him until their sides hurt.
Even so, as a long time beliver in the pre-hab/rehab power of a well designed hatha yoga practice, I was impressed that Arnot advocated a very well known "hot" yoga system (Bikram Yoga) as part of a daily restoration routine. I also appreciated his explaining both the "how" and the "why" of each of his modes of self help, and that he made practical, easily implemented suggestions for each method; and other helpful exercises (besides yoga), stress reduction methods and nutritional supplements (including dosages, and specific brand names).
I learned a few good things from this book, and I already know more about the subject than 90% of the mainstream American audience. So you may not NEED this book...but it will be a worthwhile entry in your health and fitness library if you decide to buy it.
Good content, let's not debate the source..........2005-09-07
I haven't read "the arthritis cure" so can't comment on the other reviewer's "rehash" perception. The presentation looks highly suspicious, I bought it on the small chance it would actually help my knee pain....then I was surprised to find that some of his stuff actually works. Immediately. Wow, my joints honestly did feel "like silk" after one of his yoga sessions.
Ho Hum rehash of previous written material.......2004-02-10
Bob Arnot is a friendly an interesting newsperson but not a great writer.
Provides nothing new from the original, gold-standard book "The Arthritis Cure."
Basically, this book is a thinly veiled attempt to sell a second-rate glucosamine product, Move Free. This is made by Schiff, the Weider company associated with all of those silly body-building magazines, potions and pills. Schiff's website gives us the clue to this association. Move Free has an unproven mixture of glucosamine forms.
