Book Description
Between the pressures to marry and become a traditional Indian wife and the humiliation of losing her job in Silicon Valley, Devi is on the edge–where the only way out seems to be to jump. . . .
Yet Devi’s plans to “end it all” fall short when she is saved by the last person she wants to see: her mother. Forced to move in with her parents until she recovers, Devi refuses to speak. Instead, she cooks . . . nonstop. And not the usual fare, but off the wall twists on Indian classics, like blueberry curry chicken or Cajun prawn biryani. Now family meals are no longer obligations. Devi’s parents, her sister, and her brother-in-law can’t get enough–and they suddenly find their lives taking turns as surprising as the impromptu creations Devi whips up in the kitchen each night. Then a stranger appears out of the blue. Devi, it appears, had a secret–one that touches many a nerve in her tightly wound family. Though exposing some shattering truths, the secret will also gather them back together in ways they never dreamed possible.
Interspersed with mouthwatering recipes, this story mixes humor, warmth, and leap-off-the-page characters into a rich stew of a novel that reveals a woman’s struggle for acceptance from her family and herself.

Badly Written Book.......2007-07-14
I love South Asian chick-lit. That being said, my collection is quite large and so I feel that I am somewhat of an authority on the genre. This book looked promising, but fails in several areas. The characters are poorly developed and 2-D. The plot (without giving anything away) is badly executed, the climax leaving me wanting to throw the book across the room (I did, and only finished it a month later because I had nothing else to read). The subtheme of food is poorly woven in, adding a confusing layer to already dissapointing cake (or katli). Only read it if you are desperate for any dose of South Asian chick-lit, otherwise, pick up For Matromonial Purposes by Kavita Daswani.
Definitely a little Crazy, in need of more Curry.......2007-05-10
I am not a great fan of Indian American fiction, but decided to give this book a try, based on its interesting cover art. The first page was captivating, but as I continued to read it, I grew more and more disenchanted - with the unskillfully created characters, anachronistic plotline, and eventual resolution. I couldn't even finish reading through the book, so I skimmed it instead, reading certain parts that captured my attention.
Malladi did not do what is most important in a story - have the reader become attached to her characters, so much so that the reader simply must continue turning each page to see how it all turns out. The novel also did not offer any distinct iterations on being an Indian American immigrant. I've read this all before - the constant feeling of loss for one's homeland, the culture clash between an immigrant and their American-born child, the sporadic Indian language and food references.
All in all, I would not recommend this book.
Okay, maybe two and a half, to be fair..........2007-04-05
I find Indian culture pretty fascinating. Indian cuisine, too, is outstanding. So, when my book club selected another Indian novel (this one with yummy recipes included), I was optimistic. However, of the three books involving India that my club has read, this is definitely my least favorite. The author is really not a very talented writer, in my opinion. Though she obviously knows a lot about her culture -- that is authentic and genuine -- she knows little about the art of subtlety, character development, and moving of the plot. The "shocking" surprise in this novel is pretty obvious from the get-go. The relationships between the characters, besides being unbelievable, are simply beaten into the reader again and again. "So-and-so is upset for reasons a, b, and c." Malladi doesn't give her readers credit for being particularly bright. We don't need to have these things explained to us. We're not idiots! (Though, I do feel a little dumber having finished this book!) My advice, look for authors like Chitra Divakaruni and Jhumpa Lahiri to get your fix of Indian-inspired literature. This book offers little more than a trip to you favorite Indian restaurant and an episode of Jenny Jones might give you. You can do better...
Very disappointing!.......2007-03-11
After reading reviews here I decided to buy this book. I love books by Indian authors (I am Indian myself), and really like the simplicity portrayed in such books. However, this one was not up to the mark.
A lot of things didn't make sense. First of all, how can Devi's sister be so insensitive and think about **x when her sister has just tried to commit suicide? Moreover, is it possible for the entire family to be so mean to the mother who actually "runs" the house? I had to skip many pages because it got to be such a drag.
I also did not like the writer's (amateurish) style of writing - it reminded of Sydney Sheldon / Daniel Steel books where certain feelings are exaggerated. The writer also did not really give us a glimpse into the real psyche of the characters. The story was cliched - one sister is better than the other, people compare them, etc.
All in all, I would just skip this book and move on to other "rich Indian books" by talented writers. I was seeking a book highlighting simplicity, realistic Indian families, and an interesting sense of style. I found neither in this book.
Excellent book!.......2007-01-04
This book is very good. It is touching, poignant, and funny. I enjoyed the family dynamic which is revealed and changes as the book progresses. It is a really great story of triumph over adversery ( I hope I spelled that right). I really enjoyed how the charachters in this book changed their 'assigned destinies' and took control of their lives despite religious and traditional prejudice/doctrine. It is a wonderful case of two worlds colliding and blending in a way that works. This book will make you laugh and cry. The charachters are very rich and very real. You will finish this book sad that you have to leave the charachters you met behind.

When it seems too perfect, it probably is imperfect.......2007-05-19
The title refers to the legal theorum, "should a search or warrant prove to be obtained under false pretense, all subsequent findings are the 'fruit of a poisonous tree' and therefore inadmissible in a court of law'". When Joe's companion, Selectman Gail Zigman is brutally raped in the same bed they had made love in two hours prior, all hell breaks loose in Brattleboro.
For the rape crisis group that Gail works with, "Woman for Woman"; for the local State's Attorney (up for re-election in two weeks); for the members of the Brattleboro Police Department (for whom Gail is considered a family member); the case becomes a cause celebre, and everyone wants the 'perp' caught, tried and punished, as soon as possible. But for the same reason, the case has to be handled extra-carefully, to make sure that any proof against the 'alleged' perp is clean and not manufactured. There can be no cutting corners on this one.
As Joe and the Brattleboro PD follow the clues where they find them, a case begins to build against a three time (once convicted) rapist. All of the info that is painstakingly develop, point to the MO of Bob Vogel. When confronted, Vogel bolts and ends up pursued by Joe through the tunnels of a hydropower station, where Joe is knifed by Vogel. Joe almost dies from this wound, and ends up spending close to a month in the hospital. During this time, Vogel's case is brought to trial, but some- thing about the case gives Joe a bad feeling.
As Joe reassesses the case, it turns out that one of the 'original' witnesses has embellished his testimony and much of information developed for the case is thrown out by the Judge. As Joe and the Brattleboro PD review the case, Joe begins to have doubts as to the guilt of Vogel. Some of the proof seemed to 'perfect' and Joe feels like someone has been leading him around by the nose. So who is the rapist, it's almost impossible to guess, since Mayor hasn't given us any information about the 'perp' prior to the last fifty pages. The denouement is tight and well done and the ending is just a little less than satisfying.
A strong addition to a wonderful series.......2006-03-22
Mr. Mayor has created a series that emphasizes atmosphere without sacrificing suspense and intrigue. His hero, Joe Gunther, is determined, intelligent, compassionate and yet flawed. Gunther is constrained by relationship and job pressures which contribute to his realistic quality. Of course, that makes him much easier to identify with than most other detective protagonists.
You Can't Keep a Good Man Down.......2002-08-18
Archer Mayor is to be praised for his precise clarity. To make the average reader understand that a search warrant improperly executed makes everything found (up to and including murder weapons), null, void and inadmissible as evidence is a difficult concept, yet Mr. Mayor succeeds. His writing is so realistic; we are as disappointed as the police.
Brattleboro VT police detective Joe Gunther's very special lady friend of fifteen years (Joe is nothing if not a careful man), Gail is brutally raped over a three-hour period not long after Joe has left her house. Joe is enraged, guilt-stricken, and stunned. Gail is shattered, but fortunately is being taken care of by her highly experienced women's group. Though Gail can barely speak, she indicates she wants Joe in charge of the case. The majority of his fellow policemen and all of his superiors try to discourage him from attempting this dual role as clear-eyed, impartial cop and Gail's distraught comforter.
After some brilliant police work, a clear trail leads to a thoroughly despicable scumbag who has all the right credentials. A search of his house solidifies his guilt. An aborted arrest attempt leaves Joe in a coma after suffering abdominal stab wounds from the suspected man. To add to this unfortunate turn of events, it is found the warrant was improperly served and the assailant cannot be tried for the rape. (A silver lining, of course, is that he CAN be tried for attempted murder.) After Joe staggers back on duty, it begins to look as if the rapist must be someone else. Joe is further knocked about, bounced on his head, and shot, but justice is eventually served.
The book is very tightly and skillfully written. I had a few qualms about Joe and Gail. They were so lofty in their sentiments, understanding and goals, they seemed to me to belong on pedestals in the park rather than ordinary (if superior) people. I was as dubious as everyone else in Brattleboro about the propriety of Joe taking the lead in the investigation. Think a lot less mayhem would have ensued with Joe being left on the bench. Then there were Joe's remarkable recuperative abilities. I couldn't help but wince every time he tore his stitches out anew while grappling with the bad guys.
This is one hard-boiled mystery that I admire the craft more than the probability. Grade: B-
A Master Artist With Words.......2001-05-24
All of Archer Mayor's books have a gripping story line. Although the stories are first class, the pictures drawn with words as the story unfolds are the best that I have ever encountered. The magnificent metaphors can create, in less than one sentence, images that may take other authors pages. Although each book is independent in and of itself, I enjoy reading the stories in sequence. There is a steady progression in character development and interpersonal relationships as we go from story to story.
If you are a mystery fan, I am sure that you will enjoy the entire series as much as I have. If you are a student taking a course in creative writing, I don't think that you will find a better word artist than Archer Mayor.
Another solid entry in the Joe Gunther series.......2000-09-09
Detective Joe Gunther's girl friend has been raped. All clues point to convicted rapist Bob Vogel and Gunther leads the police in hunting Vogel down. But Gunther is almost killed by Vogel, and as Gunther recupurates from the near-fatal stabbing he takes a closer look at the evidence and begins to have doubts. Could it be that they've got the wrong man behind bars and the real rapist is still out there ready to strike again?
Like all of Mayor's Gunther novels the police work is believable as are the characters. The dialog is well done and Mr. Mayor has a way of grounding us in place in Brattelboro Vermont and shows us how a small town really works. If you like a good mystery and especially police procedurals this whole series is good with this book perhaps the pick of the litter.

Average story line, too many distractions.......2004-07-09
I hate to give a review like this. From his biography, Norm Harris seems like a nice guy. Unfortunately, for only maybe the third or fourth time in my life, I could not finish his book.
Maybe the problem was my expectations were too high. Prior to purchasing the book online, I had read several glowing reviews. I couldnt't wait to begin reading. However, I was sorely disappointed. Hard as I tried, I could not relate to the characters. They seemed like cardboard cut-outs. Their actions were driven by the plot. The plot itself seemed contrived and simply wasn't very interesting (after a fairly compelling beginning).
My main complaint was the typographical errors. I seemed to find one on every page. Words were misspelled. Grammatical errors were prevalent. A character known only as "Mr. Smith" (for example) would be referred to in the next paragraph as "Ralph". Reference was made to "Caspar the Friendly Ghost". I always thought it was "Casper". Sentences either contained too many commas or not enough. These errors were ultimately too distracting and prevented me from focusing on the story.
**To Mr. Harris's credit, I learned after that the book was self-published; Mr. Harris did not have the assistance of a professional editor and/or publishing house.
bad writing, ok plot.......2004-02-17
I bought this book because of its high ratings by readers and because it appeared in several top 10 lists that included other authors l like. It wasn't obvious to me until I got the book that it was self-published. I still read it with an open mind because of the positive reviews, but it was painful to get through. Although the plot is fun in the abstract, the way the book progresses, the scenes, the dialogue and the descriptions of the locale are banal at best but often awkward. I've never written a review for amazon before, but I felt completely duped by all the exhuberant praise for this book and had to put my two cents in. Read Lee Child or Vince Flynn instead.
Couldn't get through this one.......2003-05-14
Easy writing style carried me half way through Fruit of A Poisonous Tree, but I found the plot laboring to find a conclusion. When they dived for the same items the second time in sequence, I lost my patience. I shouldn't have to work so hard to follow a plot. Sorry, but this one is not for me, and I love JAG on TV. Pick up the pace and keep the plot moving along at a faster pace and this author could be a best seller.
I didn't care about the characters, lacked character development.
A Talent to be reckoned with.......2003-04-11
One of America's top secret fighter jets crashed mysteriously
in North Korean provincial waters. The American Frigate USS Jonathon Carr was sunk by North Koreans before US sailors could recover technical secrets. The world was looking at a potentially incendiary international incident.
Meanwhile, Faydra Green, beautiful blonde Naval Jag officer, was investigating a bizarre series of murders of a Navy Seals, an investigation that would eventually take her to Seoul Korea, and into the heart of the volatile world crisis.
A sharp, crackling military thriller written by former military man, Norm Harris, "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" offers a labyrinth of military cover ups, surprise twists, and insiders techno knowledge that would make some of the big name thriller writers jealous. Norm Harris is a talent to be reckoned with. Good, exciting, inventive read.
Exellent debut novel ........2003-04-09
English is my second language . This book is written with the use of too many words which I never heard before ... so I had to use the dictionary ...at the beginning . But after about 30 pages I didn't have time for that - I had to know what is going on NOW ! I think my English is much better now .
Main character (Simon Linn ) is a Marine officer . One morning he wakes up just to find himself being set up for murder. The Navy lower was assign to his defense and this was her first murder defense ... getting wormer ? Wait until you come to the middle of the book . When ships start sinking , planes start dropping, people start disappearing and people who never existed start appearing !
I started reading this book in the evening and when I was done ... the sun was up . I didn't notice that .
For debut novel for any author ? Very solid 5 stars . I'll bet my left hand's "pinky" that someone will be smart enough to make a movie based on this book . And I will be first in line to buy a ticket .

A favorite returns.......2006-07-20
One of Rosemary Sutcliff's best books is back in print. Several of her titles have been unavailable for years: Dawn Wind, Knight's Fee, The Shield Ring, Frontier Wolf, Sword at Sunset, The Mark of the Horse Lord.
Previous reviewers have provided a plot summary of this book; please see their comments on the story.
Like much of her work, TMOTHL is based on real events. Sutcliff is perhaps the finest children's historical novelist. Folks of all ages enjoy reading her work. She could research an episode in Britain's past and add memorable people and descriptive period language. The resulting tale would be true to history and her characters' humanity. As other reviewers have stated, "She makes you believe it happened just this way."
I hope Front Street Publishing succeeds with Horse Lord, and decides to bring back more Sutcliff books currently out of print.
I would give 10 stars if I could.......2005-08-21
This is one of my all time favorite books,, I read it over 40 years ago, and still am spellbound by the story.
Little know treasure..........2004-09-18
I stumbled upon this book in a local highschool and have since purchased a copy of my own. It is shamful that such an excellent book is currently out of print.
The book follows the life of a gladiator slave, Red Phaedrus, who takes on the role of Prince of the Dalriads through a scheme to regain power from the Royal Woman of the Caledones.
This book hovers on the border of being epic with many rituals and battles being described in detail. The illustrations are not of the traditional form, yet their stark beauty helps provide a unique understanding of the story.
I would readily recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in fictional history - particularly of Northern England and Ireland.
Kings and Gladiators.......2003-02-07
An outstanding, deeply moving book,The Mark of the Horse Lord is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is the story of Phaedrus the Gladiator, who poses as Midir, Lord of the Dalriadain (a tribe of Northern Britain). Set during the Roman period, it describes the customs and beliefs of ancient civilizations clearly and believably. Its realistic inclusion of cruelty and death, however, makes it inappropriate for very young readers. I highly recommend it for ages 12 and up--it may be classified as a "children's book," but it far surpasses many adult books I have read. Its central theme--the true meaning of kingship--is powerfully and beautifully developed as Phaedrus gradually grows in love for and understanding of his adopted people. Phaedrus himself is a very real person, as are the others--Midir, the true king of the Dalriadain; Liadhan, the woman who blinded Midir in order to take his throne; Conory, Midir's closest friend, who alone recongnizes that Phadrus is an imposter; and Liadhan's daughter Murna, who Phaedrus loves. In the end, Phaedrus recognizes the deepest meaning of kingship, and becomes the Horse Lord in truth, and not just in seeming. And, as in all the best books, the reader is left with the feeling that it all really happened--just that way--and that nothing could have happened differently.
A wonderful historical fiction novel!.......1999-10-14
Who can weave a story of history, suspense, excitement, danger, heroisim, and drama with more skill than Sutcliff? I have read 9 of her books, but so far this surpasses them all! Former gladiator Phaedrus is made king of the Horse People, a northern British clan, impersonating Midir, the true Horse Lord whom the wicked queen Liadham blinded and so disabled him from coming to power. Phaedrus and his followers try ridding themselves of Liadham, but she escapes. Many battles against her follow. The Mark of the Horse Lord will draw you into the days of ancient Britain with the adventures of the new king. A superb piece of work, a must-read!
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This is the conclusion of Paxson's treatment of the
Nibelungenlied, the 13th-century epic made familiar through Richard Wagner's operas. Paxson indulges in little gratuitous deviation from the sources, and her prose style is blunt and unadorned. She does, however, bring color and dimension to her characters -- most notably Gudrun (Kriemhild in the epic), who stands at the center of the poem's plot yet is a caricature of hatred there. Here, Gudrun's motives are presented, and her Burgundian brothers become realistic, rather than ritualized. Paxson allows Gudrun to survive and come to terms (a modern idea) with her blood-guilt. Touches of shamanism, Germanic-Norse gods, and supernatural creatures are unobtrusive. Primarily, this trilogy is about people trapped by their own natures; the gods cannot help them if they will not help themselves.

Description on back of book: .......2006-10-28
"The wolf has been devoured by the dragon. The raven flies no more. And in the land of the Hun, a conqueror waits to reap the spoils of vengeance.
A wronged lover's pain, the will of a god, and the faithlessness of royal friends destroyed the legendary warrior, Sigfrid Sigmundson. And now duty demands that his grieving widow, Gudrun, wed again. For her union with Attila, the scourge who will be Khan of Khans, is necessary to the survival of Gudrun's noble tribe-and especially important for her two brothers: Gundohar, the tormented Burgund poet/king...and one-eyed Hagano, wielder of the weapon that slew his sister's beloved.
But it is the bitter blood of kinship that poses the greatest threat to a family already poisoned by hatred and guilt-as they await the final, fateful knotting of the twisted destiny they themselves have wound."

Customer Reviews:
a must read.......2005-06-03
My copy finally fell apart and I can't wait for the entire series to be released in the 2 volume set. Definitely one of the best I've ever read.
Morwood: Opium for the Fantasy Addiction.......2000-02-10
About 10 years ago at the age of 14 I picked up this novel from Morwood, and put it down again a couple of days later after I'd done nothing else but read. Since that first hit I've been addicted to the Book of Years, and other Morwood spin-offs from this series. The pages on my poor old paperbacks are worn and tattered from so many reads (and the occasional accidental dip in the bath).
The story of the young warrior unfolds over the 4 books remarkably well. From the loss of his family we follow his adventures through dark and treacherous lands in the attempt to fulfil his oath and avenge his father's death. The plot is gripping, the dialogue wry and entertaining, and the characters well-developed. If you like your fantasy a bit more adult, don't just buy this book, get the series.
AWSOME !!! You won't be able to put this one down!!!.......1999-06-25
"The Book of Years" is began in "The Horse Lord". I would have to say it is one of my favorite books and series as well. Non-stop action, the wording of this tale flows smoothly and before you know it is time to get ready for work cause you just couldn't put the book down! I must have read the series over half a dozen times over the last 12 years! If you get lucky enough to find a copy, BUY IT!!! You will NOT regret it!! It is a great read!!!
Book Description
This is an accessible introduction to nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD), a syndrome which was first recognized in the 1970s. Since this time, the number of children diagnosed with NLD, a condition that combines both behavioral and coordination problems, has been slowly rising.
Marieke Molenaar-Klumper provides an overview of the varied opinions expressed about NLD. Inspired by extensive research, she describes the cognitive, psychometric, socio-emotional and visual aspects of this syndrome. She also discusses how NLD can be diagnosed and describes how the syndrome associates itself with other conditions. She completes her overview of NLD by suggesting practical treatment strategies that can be applied both at home and in school.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best resource in this area.......2003-01-19
This book was heavy on educational and psychological jargon and short on new ideas. Granted that there isn't a large body of knowledge on NLD, but this book doesn't seem to address anything that hasn't been covered by other authors.
Excellent Book!.......2002-10-20
A very easy and short book that is packed with tons of information on nonverbal learning disorders. If you have a child with this disability, you will know that not much information is known about this in the educational setting. I highly recommend this book to parents whose children have been recently diagnosed with this disorder. It's very frustrating when the people that can help your child most don't have a clue how to. It's a great book to give to educators in your school. I thank the author one hundred times over. This book was a lifesaver.
