Very Cool Story!.......2006-07-07
My name is Andrew. I am 7 years old. (My daddy helped me write this.) I liked when the seven ak-baba swooped down from the tower. And then it was cool when Lief put on the belt and destroyed the Ols and drew away the ak-baba.
You should read this book because it is very interesting and you'll read about a lot of monsters and magic.
deltora quest return to del.......2006-03-18
In this book lief , jasmine and barda battle numorise monsters in the world of deltora.in the book the chacters are lief , jasmine and barda.
i think this is a good book its filled with adveturs and combat.
the main point in this book is to get all 8 gems and put them back on the belt and find the hier.there are 8 books but there are more colletions.the evil shadow lord cast a spell over deltora lief , jasmine and barda are trying to stop him the 8 gems were taken by the aka-babes they've been live for 500-1000 years.i think you should read this book if u like a advetures.
The Final Hour.......2005-09-04
This is most defenantly the best book of the series (at least the origanal Deltora Quests)! Others follow closly, but the end of the story and all the secrets revealed takes the cake! The climax gives just the right tone- choas and desparation. Excellent!
A marvelous return!.......2005-07-10
Having all seven gems, our three heroes are on their way home to announce the heir, with seven chosen ones to guide them. Each chosen one represents a gem and together thay are the belt. The last book is a confusing and long book. There are betrayals, secrets, mysteries and hopes. All beleifs will be clashed as loved ones will be killed, and all may be lost. But this powerful and beautiful world will show its triumph as they pass the lake of tears, and it's deaths as they pass the evil city of the rats.Lief, Barda and Jasmine have many ideas on who the true heir will be.They search all areas, up in trees and down in tunnels, and also in the imperial palace.Where hope will be lost, hope may be gained in this thrilling book. This book concluded the whole series extremely well, and for once I was truly satisfied.
Return to Sanity.......2005-02-05
I bought these books once with my own money and could not put them down. My life was hectic I was scared and when "The Valley of the Lost" came out and I bought it I was even more scared. That's right I was addicted to Deltora Quest. And when I finished "The Valley of the Lost" I thought some thing was missing...I don't maybe it was the fact the Shadowlord was still there? And then it came the answer to my dreams and prayers: "The Return to Del". I danced I laughed, I threw a party that served sodas! And when I finally read it was the best book I'd ever read in my life. You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll mostly cry! IN HAPPINESS!!!!!! All you Questaholics (the Skittish term for Deltora Quest lovers) will love it.

Shan, an ex-police inspector who spent years in a Chinese prison, is the intriguing protagonist of this literary thriller set in the stunning and rarely portrayed landscape of modern Tibet. While Shan's search for a stolen sacred relic in a Himalayan valley whose underground wealth is the center of explorations by a Sino-American oil consortium provides the novel's central plot, the real crime, Beijing's efforts to eradicate the remnants of Tibet's spiritual and cultural heritage, is more fully and engagingly portrayed. The central motif of the novel--Shan's travels with a salt caravan, at first guarding and then searching for the relic after it mysteriously disappears-- becomes a journey toward enlightenment whose denouement is more than worth the trip for readers who opt to suspend disbelief and travel with Shan and his companions to the centuries-old cave of the medicine lamas. Bone Mountain is a rich, complicated, and original exploration into the extraordinary power of belief, faith, and the triumph of the human spirit, as complex and compelling as Tibet itself. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Deep in the heart of Tibet, ex-Beijing police inspector Shan is on the run from the brutal Chinese army. Shan has agreed to lead an expedition to return a long-lost idol to a distant valley, an act that, according to Tibetan prophecy, will save this sacred place. But the pilgrimage turns into a deperate flight when the monk guiding them is murdered and Shan discovers that the idol was stolen from the Chinese army, who is now in hot pursuit. Ever the investigator, Shan faces a tangle of mysteries: why are the Chinese so desperate to retrieve the idol? Why are rumors sweeping the countryside that an ancient lama is returning to liberate this country? Why has an American woman geologist abandoned an oil companys drilling project and fled into the mountains? For Shan, the answers lie in the raucous drilling camp of the capitalists and in a mysterious monastery where the teachings of the Party are favored over the teachings of Buddha. The further he investigates, the more Shan comes to realize that what is at stake is not only justice, but also the spiritual survival of those who have joined his journey.Tense and moving, filled with the spiritual and geo- graphic landscapes of the oppressed land of Tibet, Bone Mountain is a spectacular achievement from a rising star in modern crime fiction.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Weak Effort From a Fine Writer.......2005-05-27
Too long, too convoluted and too many characters. I enjoyed The Skull Mantra very much but the series may be played out. There are simply too many implausible turns in this book, too many coincidences to be believable. Plus, I'm a bit weary of having the cruelty and perfidy of the Chinese thrown at me on every page. I know it's all true and actually much worse than what is portrayed but the repitition is tiresome. I think I'll skip Beautiful Ghosts.
A warm, inspiring reading experience.......2003-01-20
Eliot Pattison's books are unlike any other books that I have ever read. Having thoroughly enjoyed his two recent works set in Tibet and adjacent regions, entitled The Skull Mantra, and Water Touching Stone, I was very eager to read Bone Mountain.
The main impression one gets is of a gentle religious teaching disguised as a mystery novel. If one is open to Mr. Pattison's exposition of Tibetan Buddhism, which seems entirely consistent with the other readings and experiences of your reviewer, an admitted outsider, one cannot help but admire the compassion and gentleness of most of the Tibetan characters, and indeed of many of the Han Chinese. There are quiet miracles, small answered prayers, and descriptions of meditation that are calming to read. The cumulative effect is like walking in the mountains or hearing beautiful music, completely independent of the who-killed-the-guys theme.
The pacing of the book is better, I thought, than in Water Touching Stone. Again, there are several key geographical locations that are introduced and described. An eco-consciousness theme is more obvious than in the previous novels. The action shifts back and forth between these various locales, but this time they are close together, accessed on foot, and related historically, religously, and even geologically to each other. The modern world again intrudes, and, in fact, the integration of the timeless Tibetan religious themes with helicopters, computers, and Westerners is a real challange which by and large is handled convincingly.
The book can be read and enjoyed on several levels. Personally, I enjoyed "the journey" of Shan and his companions so much I really did not care whether the mystery was solved. I intend to buy several copies as gifts. It certainly does not shy away from politics, and I have been struggling with whether or not, and how, to present this books to Chinese people I have been priviliged to get to know. This book reminds us of one of the many horrific wars that grip our world, and points to a path that may be of great value in reducing the suffering.
Read his other two books, they're better.......2003-01-08
I was waiting with great anticipation for Pattison's latest book to be published and I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed. This story just didn't have the edge of the seat gripping feel to it. With his other books, I couldn't put them down, wanting to know what would happen next. With this book some of that magic was unfortunately lost. Having said that, there are very few books with stories based in Tibet, so for that I am still drawn to his books. If you're looking for a different kind of murder/mystery or are an Asiaphile, Pattison is it.
Mr. Pattison amazes his readers with some compelling prose.......2002-10-16
Once in a while a great novel receives recognition for its inherent stature. Such was the case when Eliot Pattison's debut novel THE SKULL MANTRA won the prestigious Edgar Award. His second novel, WATER TOUCHING STONE, would have won if THE SKULL MANTRA hadn't; I mean, you can't keep handing the trophy over to the same guy, even if he deserves it. But the plain and simple truth is that no one is doing quite what Pattison is doing, and no one is doing what they do quite as well as what Pattison is doing.
If you are by chance unfamiliar with Pattison, or either of the aforementioned novels, you could certainly jump on with BONE MOUNTAIN. Although BONE MOUNTAIN is a continuation of the themes and characters introduced and explored in THE SKULL MANTRA and WATER TOUCHING STONE, BONE MOUNTAIN stands quite well on its own, as Pattison continues to amaze and astound with some of the most compelling prose out there This is a man who has a love for the written language. while his words flow with a poetic verve that is by turns beatific and terrible --- depending on his subject matter --- this is not prose that lends itself to a hurried or cursory reading. Pattison does not satisfy accuracy at the altar of experience. The reader comes away from each sitting with BONE MOUNTAIN intellectually challenged and culturally richer, as Pattison continues to explore the land, the mystery, and the tragedy that is Tibet.
BONE MOUNTAIN continues the process of shouldering Pattison out of genre adulation and into mainstream attention. And if he brings attention through these novels to the plight of the Tibetan people, then he will accomplish the task that he perhaps set out to perform to begin with.

No bones about it..........2006-08-22
The title on this book is a bit of a misnomer--there are no dinosaur bones in the book, though there is a mention of some minor fossils seen in a coal vein. There is also an allusion to something that is dinosaur-like. So much for the dino connection...
Nevertheless, I liked the book. I got interested in the characters and the relationships. The plot was interesting. I found the philosophical aspects of the book to be banal, with the typical zen emptiness infatuation, but it was tolerable and not overly annoying. I guess it fit, somewhat, but it seemed shallow and sophomoric. Of course, I may be overstating it...it's just my opinion and others may not have the same reaction.
Though I suspect it was unintentional, it is humorously ironic that the web of relationships in the small town elicited a sense of being inbred and incestuous. I guess that may be an almost inevitable consequence of tiny-town life. As Stephen Stills said, love the one you're with.
I hoped to see more happen with the Ten Fifteen character. His presence was almost like he was the requisite friendly freak, but it never progressed as I would have liked. He was kind of like a post-it note--there but not really within. I wanted his character to develop, not just observe. He really only experiences one major change in the story, and though funny, it was ultimately minor.
I did end up caring about the characters, and the minor short-comings didn't detract from the enjoyable read this story provided. I suspect most folks won't even notice the things I mentioned, they will just appreciate the characterizations and plotting. The book kind of took a stab at a theme I could appreciate, but I found that the story overwhelmed it. I almost wish the philosophical aspect had been more deeply fleshed out, and that the big tension-building subplot had been excised. In my opinion it squelched the potential the novel had to be seminal and timeless, not to mention important. Still, I want to emphasize that the story was quite enjoyable.
*** SPOILER ALERT !!!: IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE THE WHOLE PLOT PLOPPED ON YOUR PLATE LIKE A SPOONFUL OF MASHED POTATOES, DON'T READ TOM LARSON'S REVIEW BELOW. Larson is one of those self-congatulatory dolts who relish their own comments about a book more than the book itself. Unfortunately, his type are rife on the Amazon site. A bit of advice to such plot ploppers: take a class at the local junior college if you want to wax eloquent on the details of book plot. Just because you like the sound of your own voice doesn't mean that you ought to SPOIL the book for those looking for advice on whether to buy or read a book.
A Charmer.......2000-07-31
The title grabbed me when I was browsing the bookstore for a good summer read -- what a great surprise this book turned out to be! It's hard to believe this is Lana Witt's first book. "Slow Dancing on Dinosaur Bones" reminds me of the early novels of Larry McMurtry, Clyde Edgerton and Rita Mae Brown.
Excellent.......1999-12-11
I loved this book. I thought I was going to be reading a simple story about. Instead, Ms. Witt provided me with a love story, stalking, grave robbing, murder and a fight against the big bad coal company.
I enjoyed the author's style of having several things going on at once. It became a real page turner.
I do feel that the excitement of the book was over about 25 pages from the true end of the book. It's as if Ms. Witt wanted to end the drama and try up any loose ends -- although the ending is certainly not unimportant. I did enjoy every bit of this book.
Best book I've read in a long time........1999-09-09
I loved the plot, the characters, the setting, and the way the story was told. Gilman Lee is definitely an unforgettable man. I'm really pleased that I happened upon this book in the library one day. I found I needed to have it in my own library, so I tracked it down and ordered a copy at my local bookstore. (Didn't have access to Amazon at the time!) I'm presently, a couple of years later, reading it a second time, and enjoying it even more! This is a wonderful, quirky little story, and I'd highly recommend it.
A good read.......1999-09-08
A friend recommended this book to me and I could not put it down! I loved the characters and the in-depth description of the town. I can't wait to read more from this author. A very enjoyable story.

I want Mab so bab...er, so bad. She's a bit of a slag, but you have to love her motivation. Great adaptation of the movie. better, even.
The Merlin saga continues..........2001-07-27
In this, the second of the three part novelization by James Mallory we read the story of Merlin as he first dethrones King Vortigern and then puts Uther on the throne. King Arthur comes into play as well as we read his story from childhood, on through his youth and finally as king when he draws Excalibur from the stone. Queen Mab of the Old Ways meanwhile plots and schemes for Merlin's and Arthur's downfall with the aid of Morgan Le Fay. The story is pretty faithful to the miniseries so if you've seen it there will be no surprises here. What makes this novelization worth reading is Mallory's command of the legend and it's many characters, making them seem fresh and interesting. There are some scenes not in the miniseries but not as many as the previous book which had quite a bit more. The story moves along at a brisk pace (a welcome change from most fantasy novels which plod on forever), and is a worthy addition to Arthurian fiction.
Customer Reviews:
A Monumental Work.......2007-08-12
My initial interest in buying this book was due to previous exposure to Leslie LeCron's ideomotor signaling in his eminently useful 1964 book, "Self-Hypnotism." After reading that book several years ago, I found ideomotor signaling (using a pendulum) to be surprisingly effective when doing some autohypnotic "uncovering" work. Now I was excited at the prospect of having what at a glance appeared to be a "how-to" manual that would illustrate clinical applications of the technique with case examples and transcripts, especially considering that coauthor Cheek had at one time collaborated with LeCron (Rossi collaborated with Milton Erickson). "Mind-Body Therapy" proved to be not only everything I hoped it would be, but much more than I bargained for.
The authors present a theoretical framework for understanding the process of mind-body communication which they condense "into three stages or loci of a single system of cybernetic information transduction: the mind-brain, the brain-body, and the cellular-genetic (p. 159)." They convincingly subsume Pavlovian conditioning, Freudian repression, Jungian complexes, dissociative phenomena, and altered states of consciousness under the rubric state-dependent memory, learning, and behavior (SDMLB). Ideomotor finger signals then become a therapeutic means of gaining access to those state-dependent memories and learning that are not otherwise readily accessible to consciousness but are adversely impacting one's functioning at emotional and physiological levels. However, the book goes further, in that it not only outlines the use of ideomotor signals to uncover unconscious material but also to actively facilitate its therapeutic resolution, often with minimal if any processing at the conscious level. The authors contend that when using ideomotor signals in hypnosis, formally inducing trance becomes unnecessary because establishing the signals in fact facilitates the trance. This validates aspects of my above-mentioned personal experimentation with the technique, but I had not realized previously that this was a common response. Now that I am using ideomotor signaling more frequently and confidently when working with clients, I have observed this to be true for others also.
The following brief passage (one of the many I highlighted in the text) illustrates not only the complexity of the work but the author's gift for synthesis. Here they discuss the concept of "imprinting" in the context of traumatic experiences and subsequent emotional and psychosomatic illness: "The presence of great emotional or physical stress evokes a state which is indistinguishable from that of hypnosis. The unconscious response to injury is similar to the effect of a strongly given posthypnotic suggestion. Unlike ordinary learning by repetition, this memory is completed (learned) on initial impact" (p. 239).
The authors outline three stages of assessing the validity of ideomotor signaling. In brief, they contend that 1.) Emotional and physiological memory can be seen first through changes in respiration, pulse rate, and emotional reactions. These occur before finger movement occurs. 2.) Ideodynamic signals indicate the accessing of memory at an unconscious level. 3.) Verbal reporting of the experience follows.
The authors' emphasis on client empowerment, mind-body healing, and the necessity of hope and confidence in clients' ability to recover is completely congruent with the spirit of the hypnotherapy training I received through Infinity Institute. Like Winafred Blake Lucas' two-volume "Regression Therapy" text, "Mind-Body Therapy" is a monumental work that I will consult often and for years to come. In fact, it would make an excellent companion volume to the Lucas books. Rossi and Cheek even acknowledge the possibility of past lives ("When therapy is lagging . . . we should consider the possibility that something very important has happened at birth or prior to birth. In some instances the problem may even have taken place either in an earlier life experience or been picked up from what the followers of Jung call the `collective unconscious' (p.437).). However, their overall presentation of hypnotic healing is primarily (and so thoroughly) grounded in biology and physiology that I would hope it could satisfy even those who require material explanations of all phenomena.
A valuable early look at the mind and medicine..........2006-09-27
This exceptional book, a collaboration of two gifted characters, is as relevant today as two decades ago when it was a pioneering look at the mind body process. It explores many different facets of the use of communication, suggestion and hypnosis in medical situations. The information is so interesting and accessible that the book could appeal to anyone with a curiosity about the mind/body relationship. Cheek was an Ob/Gyn who regularly used hypnotism in his practice. Rossi an ally, student and collaborator of the late, famous Dr Milton Erickson, is a theorist, a psychologist / hypnotherapist and clear-thinking, research-driven psychobiologist. The examples of work with medical patients in this book show the profound and binding impact of experience on the health of the body. Processes of communication are used to explore past experiences of patients (usually consciously forgotten) that had a dramatic impact on current reproductive health. The book is part detective story and a meandering look at many different facets of the mind in medical situations.
