3 out of 5 stars only half the story.......2007-08-20

this book is best for people grading by hand, as it gives step by step instructions on how to move the pattern to grade up/down.
it does NOT give standard grading charts of standard sizes. it gives only the BASIC BASIC grades between them, such as 2" for the waist.
I was expecting something a lot more thorough and updated than this, especially since the apparel industry has changed so much. I wanted standard specs with grading, not common-sense instructions on shifting a pattern up and out, etc.

5 out of 5 stars The one that gets used most in the business.......2006-03-29

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this book because it is -hands down- the best book in the business. It's self-published so its release and publicity is limited but I can tell you this is the book that is most often USED in the apparel industry. Not the book most used in schools, but in real life (I've been a pattern maker for 25+ years). I guarantee all the pattern grading services keep it on hand! The way the grading charts and mapping is set up in the book most closely mirrors the way we work in the industry. The charts in competing books (Price/Zamkoff) are so complex but Handford's book nails it.

Unlike many book authors, Handford was a pattern maker for years. He'd work in the industry for a spate of years, get disgusted, go back to school, get disgusted with school so he'd go back to pattern making, then in to teaching, then back to school, then back to manufacturing over and over. He did this over the lifetime of his career finally ending up with a Ph.D and 50 years of industrial experience! I mention his background because it means his book is keenly attentuated to the needs of everyone, students, pattern makers and educators. He did it all so he'd know what was most efficacious for all parties concerned. His book blends the needs of everyone simply and succinctly. You could buy another book rather than this one but I don't know why you would.

Book Description

This easy-to-use workbook details the sewing processes, practical skills, and equipment used in apparel manufacturing. It contains step-by-step directions, approximately 1000 illustrations, and numerous reference charts. Efficient and cost effective procedure descriptions compliment material on the basic concept of design and desired quality—providing users with an understanding of various production methods, how they affect design decisions, and relate to garment quality and labor and material costs. Divided into three parts, the chapters logically guide readers from basic intrinsic operations to more complex specific applications for particular structural elements. Coverage includes basic machine and production skills; a complete treatment of seams; hems; darts; facings; plackets; interlinings; cuffs and waistbands; sleeves; closures; zippers; collars; pockets; bias; and linings. A practical reference for apparel manufacturers and sub-contractors, training and production supervisors, professional dressmakers, theater costumers, homesewers learning professional techniques, and a helpful tool for problem solving in the workplace.

1 out of 5 stars This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming........2004-01-13

Claire Shaeffer writes informative books about sewing and fabrics for the home sewer. Claire Shaeffer should have either stayed in the sewing industry or gained real experience in the garment industry before she dare charge $71 for a vacuous outsider's perspective of this so-called "apparel industry". The book has a generic text book tome and the corny needle and thread clip art screams "home sewer". There is nothing wrong with home sewing. I've been sewing since I was 10. Making clothes has been my quiet hobby and a source of unending fascination. The truth is: the garment industry doesn't want to deal with home sewers. "Fashion" designers and home sewers both share ignorance and arrogance as annoying, unappealing traits. Anyone can doodle on a napkin, but who can construct it from a sketch, fit it right, and sew it up professionally, within your cost structure? Not a "fashion" designer or a home sewer can do that, yet they think that they are greater than the process for they are completely unaware of the process. The goal is to work well with the fashion and garment industries. If you are looking for this kind of information in this book, you won't find it.

This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming. The "sewing on paper project" (page 50) is laughable. How will sewing on a piece of paper get me any closer to dealing with "the apparel industry"? Claire Shaeffer's terms are off. Apparel is nebulous - it's either the fashion or garment industry. The fashion industry sells the clothes while the garment industry makes the clothes. It's "block" rather than "sloper". Good blocks are everything, so learn how to make them and alter them yourself - for everything revolves around your blocks! It is your block that you take to garment manufactures from which they sew a sample. They don't need your pretty little sample. It is good to sew your "first sample" for your benefit, for you will know, in general, how to construct it and the number of steps for costing benefit. What are those 101 steps of garment production? You won't find the answer in this book. It is quite a leap going from home sewer to design entrepreneur and those of us taking that leap need accurate and relative information about the ways of the garment industry. Without accurate information, that leap means you'll never know how to contact garment manufactures; you can't define what you want and they don't know what to deliver; your clothes will never fit and you will have committed tons of money on a "dog"; you won't ever know the language of the garmento and you will sound like an a buffoon; you will sew the long, circuitous route rather than the expedient way like the professionals using industrial machines and practices. For those of you looking for information to facilitate crossing the chasm from home sewer to design entrepreneur, you won't find it here.

5 out of 5 stars THANKYOU CLAIRE SHAEFFER!!!.......2002-08-09

This is the type of book that should be used in schools for Merchandising OR Fashion Design. I cannot get over it's usefullness. Everything I wanted (and needed) to hear about about clothing manufacture is in this book! Fairchild Pubs could never publish such a USEFUL and INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN book. Those bastards always make textbooks difficult to understand and fill them with meaningless JABBERWOCKY!! Half the time, they don't even have a decent glossary or INDEX (if there is one at all) whereas Claire it seems, has given us the full tour. Peripheral data you could care less about is not here!! Nothing to waste your time, only a step-by-step layout of what happens when a person or people manufacture clothing for retail purposes. From the design concepts (who and how they're created) to what type of people you would need (including full job descriptions) to what the considerations are for contracting, shipping etc.. There are also tons of other little things including pictures that are laid out in a very intelligible way. The beauty of her writing is that the data is always concious that you may not be a huge entreprenuer, and applies methods for the little guy as well. Just an amazing book. I almost don't want anyone else to know about it...

              Book Description

When cartoonist Bill Watterson announced that his phenomenally popular cartoon strip would be discontinued on the last day of 1995, Calvin and Hobbes fans throughout the world went into mourning. Fans have learned to survive - despite the absence of the boy and his tiger in the daily newspaper. Now, like the wave of a sweet memory; comes one last chance to experience Calvin and Hobbes, in its final collection. Like the thirteen extraordinarily successful Watterson books that came before it, this volume promises to deliver all the satisfaction of visiting its characters once more. Calvin fans will be able to see their favorite mischief maker stir it up with his furry friend, long-suffering parents, classmate Susie Derkins, school teacher Miss Wormwood, and Rosalyn the baby-sitter. This collection, including full-color Sundays, has it all: Calvin-turned-firefly waking Hobbes with his flashlight glow; courageous Spaceman Spiff rocketing through alien galaxies as he battles Dad-turned-Bug-Being; and Calvin's always inspired snowman art. There's no better way for Watterson fans to savor once again the special qualities of their favorite strip.

              5 out of 5 stars Life.......2007-08-23

I love this book. Calvin and Hobbes have much to say about living and life. I keep a copy of this book around always. I think this is the best of the series.
The last couple pages are worth the price of purchase. A snowy hillside with Calvin and Hobbes on a sled looking down at an unmarked field of snow. I give this to friends who are moving on with their lives, as a hope for their future. "It's a magical world".

              5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2007-03-10

This was written by the son of the person "love my kids". This hysterical book is really the best Calvin and Hobbs out there. In wrapping up his beloved comics characters, Watterson has included all the best aspects of Calvin and Hobbs, from close encounters with aliens as spaceman spiff, to the blissful and heartwarming ending of the entire strip, where Calvin and Hobbs, after Clavin proclaims "It's a magical world, Hobbs ol' buddy!" Set off in their sled toward the snowy winter horizon for future adventures in our imaginations. And whoever wrote "it's a depressing world", reach over and pull your boxers out of your buttcrack.

              1 out of 5 stars Should be titled, "It's A Depressing World"..........2006-12-13

An only, lonely child. Bullied at school. Clearly a genius level intellect, he's unchallenged and stifled since nobody, not his parents, and not even his teacher, recognizes this. A father who's always too busy to spend any time with his son. A father who's often seen, get this, reading --*reading* -- rather than paying his only son some attention! A mother, who literally, in strip after strip, throws him out the door. Throws, as in "child flying through the air". A child, and a small child at that, allowed repeatedly to wander alone through the woods! A child denied even a pet. His only friend -- a stuffed tiger.
Makes the "Peanuts" look like "The Family Circus".

              5 out of 5 stars Great farewell.......2006-03-14

From what I know this is the last C&H collection published before Watterson's adieu. That means the last page and, in particular, the last picture are the last we'll hear from Calvin and Hobbes in our lifetime. They're both absolutely beautiful and I don't mind to confess that I had tears in my eyes the moment I watched them. This book is typically exhilarating Watterson art: crazy, warm, witty, always funny and incredibly well written and designed. The strips about Calvin's snowmen are the ones that probably stand out, but it's a very tough call. A great, great farewell from my all time favourite comic strip.

              5 out of 5 stars A bittersweet departure.......2005-08-30

Watterson closes up the C&H series beautifully with this final book.
Everything about Calvin and Hobbes is stellar. The artwork, by itself, is superior to almost everything else out there. The dialogue is still amazing. Calvin and Hobbes is one of the few comics that manages to make me actually laugh.
But, of course, there's this sadness in reading this, in realizing that there won't be any more adventures with our little protagonist. Recommended for all fans.

2 MP3-CDs, Unabridged, With Music and Sound Effects, Includes Volumes 1 and 2, Running Time: 20 hours Contents of Volume I: In A.D. 66, nationalist and religious revolutionaries in Palestine led a ferocious revolt of the Jewish people against the authority of mighty Rome, culminating in the greatest upheaval and savagery the world had known up to that time. By the end of the conflict seven years later, over one million Jews had perished and tens of thousands were sold into slavery. Until the Holocaust, it remained the greatest tragedy ever endured by a people. How had this once peaceful and prosperous region been struck down, and by what process did its fratricidal feuds take it down this slippery slope to utter annihilation? Fortunately for us, there was an eyewitness historian to the momentous events: Joseph ben Mattathias, known to posterity as Flavius Josephus. In beautifully written and clearly understood prose, Josephus sets out to explain the origin of the conflict. He describes how the fanatical zealots came to dominate the political life of Palestine, illustrates ho! w the Romans were drawn into the fight, and shows how the war was carried on by both sides, ending with the siege of the fortress of Masada.

In volume 1, discover how Herod the Great came to be king of the Jews during the time of Julius Caesar, how he ruled and what he accomplished. You will hear the story of his larger-than-life personality and how family conflict poisoned his reign. Discover the means by which Herod eliminated his enemies, including members of his own family, and how his successors' corruption and ineptitude brought on growing anarchy and religious tension. Peer into the mind of nationalist fanatics bent on destroying themselves and their nation for the sake of their beliefs. Hear how famous persons like Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Pontius Pilate, Augustus, Nero, Vesapasian and Josephus himself played their parts in this fascinating history.

Volume 1 begins with the origins of the House of Herod in the middle of the first century B.C. and carries us to the opening battles of the Jewish revolt and the arrival of Vespasian in Judaea. Although we encourage listeners to hear the entire work from the beginning in order to form a more complete understanding, those who are only interested in the revolt itself may skip to Chapter 9 in volume 1.

Running time: 10 hours for Volume 1.

Contents of Volume II: The spectacularly violent Jewish revolt of A.D. 66 is in full swing as volume 2 opens, and we begin our story with the horrific siege of Jotapata and the capture of Josephus. Listeners receive a rousing, eyewitness account of Roman arms in action as Vespasian presses relentlessly onward to Jerusalem. As the Roman war machine closes in on Jerusalem, the fanatic zealots inside the city are involved in tearing each other apart and savaging the citizens trapped inside. With doom approaching from afar and civil war convulsing the city from within, the once grand metropolis of Jerusalem begins to disintegrate. Vespasian is proclaimed emperor upon Nero's death, and turns over command of the army to his brilliant son, Titus, who encircles Jerusalem and places it under siege. Unable to escape the city and preyed upon by the enraged fanatics from within, the pitiful citizens can only watch helplessly as the horrible specter of famine begins to envelope Jerusale! m and spread into every household. The horrors of siege warfare are driven home as we hear some of the most impassioned descriptions of man's folly ever put on paper. The Jewish War is one of the most important histories to survive from ancient times, dealing as it does with a subject of which there are very few sources. This is an engaging and heart-felt chronicle by

5 out of 5 stars An excellent translation.........2007-02-27

Josephus was a traitor, yes, and he was not an eyewitness to it all. His sources were an invaluable help to him in writing this account. And once again the Jewish people get short shrift. Yet this book is a necessary evil and should be read, not on its own,but with other sources for a rounded history. Everything we read can be put together like a jigsaw puzzle providing us with the insights needed to understand the Middle East today.

4 out of 5 stars A tale of horror for the Jewish people.......2006-05-10

This tells the story of the terrible tragedy of the fall of Jerusalem, and the end of Jewish rule in the holy- land. It is written by the Jewish general and turncoat Josephus whose powerful skills as historian are compromised by his questionable behavior in regard to his own people.
Josephus does sympathize with the Jewish people, and writes as their defender. But he is also the hireling of the Romans and is careful to present them in an overly sympathetic light.
This is one of the great historical works of Antiquity. It is a classic.
And yet what mixed feelings it arouses . Admiration at Josephus' skill as writer , admiration for his attempting to bring credit and praise to the Jewish people, or some part of it- and contempt for his treachery.
This work contains too the scene of Masada's fall and the powerful speech of its last defenders before their collective suicide.
This is a crucial historical document.
But the tale it tells is a tale of horror for the Jewish people.

4 out of 5 stars The Jewish War Was a Bloody Wars........2004-11-15

The Jewish War recorded by Josephus (not the second war; 132-135) but the first one is masterfully recorded in this edition. At the same time, I don't wnat to sound as though I read it simply for the sake of reading a 'materpiece of literature' but because I sincerely wanted to know, from a first hand perspective, what is was like for someone to go through this. Since were don't have many poor and average people's accounts, we have to settle for Joseph who does a pretty good job.

The Barbary shown in the war is attrocious; rape, canniblism, fanatacism, pillaging, turning on one's own friends, etc. Josephus himself tells a story about how he basically convinced 40-some of his friends to kill themselves so that he could escape. The fact of the matter is that a lot of reading between the lines is needed in this book because of the way he writes. I highly recommend it, though. At the same time, not for evyerone.

5 out of 5 stars History by an eyewitness.......2003-05-25

I found Josephus to be an excellent source of history because he was both an eyewitness and a participant. Though undoubtedly slanted toward his own personal opinion, I think the events Joseph described really happened. He, at first, was part of the rebellion against Rome, but it seems he had reservations about the wisdom of the rebellion. He did fight, however, but was defeated and captured.

After his capture, he apparently realized the hopelessness of war against Rome and seemed to have been surprised and saddened by the civil wars, murders, and political infighting of the Judeans within Jerusalem. He tried many times to shame them out of their infighting, and he encouraged them to surrender undoubtedly because, due to their disunity, they faced certain defeat. He is sometimes referred to as a traitor because he did not support the rebellion to the end. I don't think this is fair to Josephus. Not every political movement in a country is righteous and justified. I wonder how I would act were I were a German citizen during the Nazi era or an Iraqi during Saddam Hussein's defiance of international law.

I found Josephus to be a very rich source of information for "Revelation and the Fall of Judea." I am very grateful that Josephus took the time to write such a detailed account of what he saw. He writes his history almost like a novel. This easy to understand translation makes for very interesting reading. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Eyewitness to the destruction of Herod's Temple.......2003-05-13

This book would appeal to anyone interested in the destruction of Jerusalem and Herod's Temple. Josephus was born around 37AD and was a commander in the Jewish army (if really that structured)at the early stages of the Jewish revolt that began in 66AD and lasted some 7 years. Josephus was captured by the Romans prior to the attack on Jerusalem. He provides what can be considered an eyewitness account of what took place there. However, as many other reviews have pointed out, his account has to be taken with a grain of salt. Overall, I think his depiction is accurate, but some figures or numbers given are probably exagerations. Josephus had to slant his writings due to the fact he was then living in Rome under the auspices of Titus and Vespasian. Josephus would not dare to write an account that was unflattering to the Roman rulers. If he had, the writings would not exist today and Josephus himself would most likely have perished earlier than he did.

Josephus briefly mentions the three Jewish sects of the 1st century AD, the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes. Though he seems to hold the Essenes in high regard, he himself became a member of the Pharisees after a decision making process. One thing that stands out in my mind after reading this book and that is the description of the beliefs of the Pharisees. The Pharisees ascribed everything to Fate or God. This is imporant as far as the events of the book are concerned because Josephus states both Fate and God were on the side of the Romans.

You can tell that Josephus knew the Romans would eventually win the battle. Josephus was more concerned with the saving of the Temple. Josephus describes the different factions that caused the revolt and how they were "ungodly." These "terrorists" were gung-ho for a revolt against the Romans while the average citizen was terrified. Deserters were killed by the so-called Jewish terrorists and their partisans. Josephus claims to have tried to talk some sense into these rebels, but to no avail. It seems that Josephus blames the destruction more on the Jewish rebels or "terrorists" than he does the Romans. He goes into gruesome details of the infighting that took place inside of Jerusalem's walls even before the Romans arrived. It was due to the sins of these "bad" Jews that brought the wrath of God upon them. He even claims this was foretold in a prophecy. Josephus is ultimately unable to get these rebels to surrender and thus save the Temple. The Temple was used as a fortress and became the focal point of the war. These terrorists defiled the Sanctuary and the city of Jerusalem and would not give up their madness. The Romans had allowed the Jews to practice their faith and maintain their Temple pretty much as they willed. The rebels, being so eager to throw off the Roman yolk and to perhaps rule the country themselves, refused to give up their agenda. Thus the utter destruction of the Temple. Though you can imagine the Romans were a little less humane than was portrayed in this writing. Yet, you do get the feeling that Zealots or radical Jews were largely to blame. At the least, foolish for their attempt to defeat the Romans at that time. They probably should have listened to the reason of Josephus.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Addition.......2007-05-10

I regard this book as an important addition to my collection of books written by and about Anne Frank. It is for study, rather than for casual reading. The front section of the book contains lots of information about the diary and how it was determined to be authentic. The back section compares three different versions/translations of the diary, page by page. The book contains all of the writings of Anne Frank in one volume.

3 out of 5 stars Book lover but hard to follow.......2007-03-11

I loved the original Anne Frank I read well in High School. I thought this one would be really good now that I'm older. It was extremely hard to follow so I have had to put it down. I will try again later. It does have some very good parts in it and some pictures you haven't seen.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Story.......2007-02-23

After reading many versions of the Diary of Anne Frank, it was great to finally see the original version Anne herself wrote, with no edits. The first part of this book details the verification process when the authenticity of Anne's diary was challenged. The second part takes Anne's original diary, her own edited version that she began just before discovery, and the published version that Otto edited and compares them in small sections together. Its very well documented and if this is an area of interest to you, I highly recommend it.

Forgery allegations made against Anne Frank's diary are thoroughly demolished in the Revised Critical Edition. Certain people either haven't read this book or are (more likely) knowingly spreading debunked allegations to further their political agendas.

Regarding Anne Frank herself, she is an excellent writer and all the idolatry that surrounds her today can often make us forget that. This book is pretty much the definitive presentation of her writings, including not only her diary, but her short stories as well. This is the one to get.
