5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER KEEPER BY A PILCHER.......2005-06-27

I have enjoyed Rosamunde Pilcher for a long, long time and recently finished
Winter Solstice which is now in my "Keeper Library" and "An Ocean Apart" will also be there as I intend to read it again........slowly the next time. Read this one fast as I was so anxious to find out what would happen next. Truly a good story and one of the few that is not filled with sex and violence. Makes one feel
good to know there are still writers out there who do not need to use profanity for every other word and to realize there are still good people around us. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, ROBIN.

4 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoy the writing of Pilcher.......2005-05-02

I first found Pilcher when I picked up 'A Risk Worth Taking.' This book was enchanting in the way it built up characters and hurried the reader effortlessly along without the crutch of an overall plot for the first half of the book. Which is quite an achievement if you think about it. And because I enjoyed 'Risk' so much I decided to read the rest of Pilcher's work as well.

As I read 'An Ocean Apart' I found myself comparing it to 'A Risk Worth Taking' quite often. Five or six years of time lay between the two and the growth of Pilcher's ability as an author during this time is apparent. First of all 'Risk' is overflowing with sentimentality and syrup. At times the lives portrayed were so idyllic and content (even though they were undergoing conflict) that it was difficult to take. 'Risk' on the other hand has dampened this exuberance if just a bit and by doing so allowed for the penultimate moments to become ever more vivid. Also the plot of 'Ocean' is quite predictable even if Pilcher adds in several curves that muddy expectations over the details. 'Ocean' follows a very traditional linear plot line that you will have encountered countless times be it in another book or the TV movie of the week. 'Risk' however is very unusual and I would recommend that title as a starting point to any who are looking for something new and enticing plot wise.

Pilcher writes about the upper class. And it is evident that he harbors deep feelings even if subconscious on his part over class structure and its place in the world, which is fascinating unto itself, watching these aspects pop out in unexpected places. I am envious of the world Robin Pilcher must live in. He has such a positive view on life. When you read one of his books you will find yourself saying again and again, 'Ahhh, this is the way the world should be.' I look forwards to many more books by Pilcher in the future. I hope that he continues to grow as an author and continues the trend away from the traditional plot line that is so engrossing in 'Risk.' I think that he could end up as a shining light in literature if he does so. And 'Ocean' is not only an enjoyable read put forwards by an author just finding his own legs, but a beacon showing a precursor of promise that I hope is realized in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars What were you thinking??.......2005-03-29

I just finished Pilcher's An Ocean Apart and loved it!! I have also read A Risk Worth Taking and Starting Over and loved both of them as well. The son can certainly implant a character into the story just as strongly or more so than mom. I loved the flashback in the beginning where he hears a song on the radio and it takes you back to his university days where he meets Rachel.

What the other reader was thinking or reading to give such a negative review I have no idea. But obviously he/she knows not "good read".

If you like the writing styles of Pilcher, Binchy, Belva Plain and the likes, you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable!!!.......2003-03-06

The book was given to me by my daughter to read. We both love Rosemunde Pilcher and thought it worth a try. We loved the book. It was a little slow in the beginning but then I hated to put it down. It is a great "feel good" book. Never having lost a mate but having had trials that at times has made me want to run away, I can see wanting to live where no one knows you. Remember he did keep in touch with his family and children, and he did NOT know about the underhanded work of Duncan, I found the book believable. I loved it!

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2002-10-12

I should have known -- the fact that Rosemunde Pilcher's name is always used in conjunction with her son's book is a definite clue that the publisher wasn't sure he could hold his own. I suspect if his name had been Bilcher instead of Pilcher, the book wouldn't have been published or certainly not sold as well.

This story is so predictable. A situation presents itself and in the next few paragraphs, there's the solution! And he definitely didn't get American speech.

Reading this book reminded me of watching the videa of "Coming Home." In the book, Rosemunde Pilcher weaves a wonderful story with many varied characters. When I saw the video, the story seems shallow and insipid because so many characters were left out and so much of the story line changed. "An Ocean Apart" is shallow and insipid, too. In my opinion, Robin should have stuck to his day job!

During the early 1900s, China struggled to maintain an unstable democracy as radical factions fought over territories and political titles. Many young women found themselves caught between old traditions and new notions. Xueyan, or Yanyan, is lucky. Her father is one of the few who believes in education for women. So when an opportunity arises for her to attend Cornell University in America, Yanyan takes it with her family's blessing. Her only regret is leaving behind her schoolgirl crush, Liang Boashu. Once enrolled at Cornell, Yanyan is overwhelmed by culture shock. In America, the food is heavy, the money system is difficult, and odd English phrases like "pull yourself together" are confusing. Still, Yanyan thrives at school, even when American "Big Noses" embarrass her by stereotyping her as a maid, or think she must be good at doing laundry because she is Chinese. But just when she begins to finally feel at home in her new country, Liang Boashu shows up. No longer an angry young militant, Boashu is now a polished diplomat with marriage on his mind. Will Yanyan be forced to choose between her hard-won independence and the feelings she still has for Boashu?

Lensey Namioka's story of one girl's quest for identity in a time of shifting gender roles is both charming and thought provoking. Teens will be absorbed and amused by Yanyan's attempts at American slang ("I had to pull my guts together") and witty observances of "Big Nose" culture, while commiserating with her search for self. Recommended. (Ages 10 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert

        Book Description

While most 16-year-old girls are planning their weddings, Xueyan, known as Yanyan, has no interest at all in marriage. She is fascinated by medicine. In China in 1921, women rarely attend university, let alone medical school. Still, Yanyan is determined to become a doctor. But Yanyan’s feelings about marriage change when she meets Liang Baoshu.

An outstanding scholar and martial arts student, Baoshu is passionate and dangerous. He is determined to rid China of the foreigners who occupy it and restore power to the Manchu dynasty. Life with him would be an adventure. But when Yanyan realizes that being with Baoshu would also mean sacrificing her dream of becoming a doctor, she faces the most difficult decision of her life. And her choice leads to an entirely new adventure an ocean away in America—where Yanyan is the foreigner.

4 out of 5 stars Chinese Student in America.......2007-06-15

It is the nineteen-twenties, and Yanyan is living in China with her family. China is in turmoil, as it has been for years, but Yanyan's family is stable and progressive. She lives with her parents and her two older brothers. Despite the fact that she is a girl in a fairly wealthy family, Yanyan did not have her feet bound as a child. Her parents permitted her to attend the school run by American missionaries and she and her mother are encouraged to participate in conversation at the dinner table, even when arguments break out. Yanyan's father is a diplomat who has traveled to other countries and has seen how they live.

Despite the fact that she is a teenager and should be thinking about these things, Yanyan is not at all concerned with marriage. In fact, she would like to become a doctor and support herself for the rest of her life. Then she meets her brother's friend Baoshu, who is handsome and exciting. He wants her to run away with him and become a rebel, fighting the government. She thinks about his offer and the excitement that it would bring to her life, but instead decides to go to college. She enrolls in Cornell College in Ithica, New York, and travels thousands of miles away from her family to attend. College life is more difficult than she expected, and she encounters many prejudices about Chinese people. But she is determined to make it through and achieve her dream.

I liked that this story was a parallel of "Ties that Bind, Ties that Break." I liked seeing how another Chinese girl was able to make her way in the world. I liked the strength and courage of Yanyan's character. She knew what she wanted and didn't give up.

5 out of 5 stars Very good .......2006-12-16

I picked up this book because I likeds the cover, I had no idea that it was going to be such a wonderful story!! I loved reading about how young girls began to make a difference in the world. This book is defently a must read!!!

4 out of 5 stars Generally Good- Really About 3.8 Stars.......2004-03-05

Yanyan is a 16-year old girl living in China in 1921. She's finished with highschool, and wonders what the next stage of her life will bring. Always with an interest in medicine, Yanyan is thinking of finding a way to become a doctor. But then she meets the intriguing, charismatic Liang Boashu. He wants her to come away with him and be a part of his dangerous life, but is he more important to Yanyan than medicine? This question takes Yanyan to America, where she is faced with a drastically different life and decisions about where she belongs in it.

As stated, this book was typically a pleasant read. The biggest asset this book had was its likeable main character. Yanyan's courage, strength, spunk, and uniqueness just make readers want to root for her. Her excellent personality paves the way for her compelling choices and thoughts-both of which keep the reader just aching to know what happens next. I literally finished "An Ocean Apart, A World Away" in a day!

Yet something small slightly mars this promising read. Despite all of her spirit and sparkle, Yanyan's "voice" doesn't always sound natural. A bit of dialogue is quite stiff, and at times I had a nagging sense that the novel seemed too "simple." This simplicity was a little disappointing, since this book is for a "teenage girl" audience for which middle-grade straightforwardness was not needed. Yanyan would have been an even better character if her persona was more "embellished" and she wrestled with decisions a little longer. And, I've got to say it, the last chapter and the final scene were just too rushed!

I probably seem nitpicky and cynical, but I truly enjoyed parts of this book. I loved the personality of Yanyan and felt the ideas of the books were appealing and promising. Yet I can't quite give this book a glowing review with its style problems. Read it for a usually satisfying main character, but be prepared for a few flaws.

        5 out of 5 stars Wow........2003-08-04

China remains in chaos after the revolution of 1911 and young Xueyan benefits by having a progressive father who encourages her to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor of medicine. Yanyan, called Sheila, attends an English school and doesn't have bound feet, and looks forward to making her own love match, instead of having an arranged marriage. When a political exile that happens to be a former school friend of her elder brother is wounded escaping from the police, it is Yanyan who bandages his injuries.
The two begin to fall in love, but soon the young woman is forced to make a choice between eloping and living a life on the lamb, or following her dream. She chooses college and goes to America where she faces discrimination as a woman, a Chinese, and an immigrant, but in spite of oppression learns to cook and begins to master physics. Through her experience and willingness to try she makes new friends, becomes self-aware and begins to make a new life for herself.
The one flaw of this historical novel is the voice. Yanyan's first person narration feels a bit wooden, and there is too much recapping and retelling to get the reader to the point where she leaves for America, and the first semester passes in a blur of setbacks and successes. In spite of her strong personality, she lacks a strong voice. Period details flesh out the story, but also show how little some things have changed in a hundred years.

        5 out of 5 stars Brillant Book!.......2003-07-23

I just have to say, I am now such a big fan of Lensey Namioka. I've read "Ties that Bond, and Ties that Break" a little over a year ago, and now, After reading "An Ocean Apartm A World Away" I am simply blown away. This book was a continuation of the other and I absolutey love the fact that there are so many twists in it that you really never seem to expect. While there are so turns that went the predicable way, the rest of the story made up for it! The only down part about this book for me was, it ended on a note I didn't really like, but it was still good anyway. This is such I great read, and I can promise you, its worth every second! ^_^

5 out of 5 stars terrific regional mystery .......2006-06-17

After two difficult years, private investigator Erik Whiteside finally succeeds in finding the bad boy brother Win Hammond of elderly Miss Addie. Not long afterward, Win returns to Hilton Head allegedly to see his sister. However, Erik's "partner" at Simpson and Tanner, Inquiry Agents Lydia "Bay" Tanner wonders what the odious Win really wants. She and her family, friends of Miss Addie, plan to insure her sibling does not rip her off as they expect him try.

At the same time that the prodigal brother returns home, Bay and Erik have two other clients. Karen Zwilling better known to her customers as Britt Swensen, an escort service employee, wants Bay to find a male rapist, and a Georgia socialite Star Kennedy wants her to locate her beloved Wade, who vanished without a trace. When a badly battered corpse is found on the beach, Bay ponders if one of her cases just has been solved, but which one. Not sure, she keeps digging until she finds herself being yanked by the wealthy and the poor of the underbellies of society.

The sixth Bay Tanner regional mystery is a terrific entry as three distinct cases keep the Inquiry Agent and her wannabe partner Erik hopping. The Savannah feel to the delightful story line augments the investigations that Bay and Erik conduct. Fans of Southern heated mysteries will want to read Kathryn R. Wall's latest Georgia peach escapades.

                      Book Description

Get ready for the ultimate facial makeover, no matter your age or ethnicity and without surgery. If there is something about your complexion you would like to change–from dryness to laugh lines to crow’s-feet–Dr. Gregory Brown offers an easy-to-follow program that will completely revitalize your face. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Brown made a discovery that completely revolutionized skin care: He innovated the application of a human protein that actually makes skin heal faster and greatly improves its overall appearance. Now Dr. Brown has applied his expertise and landmark research to create a scientifically sound regimen that will dramatically enhance the condition of your skin–and make you look years younger.

About Face details the four simple steps to real skin rejuvenation:
                      • Eat right and see results with Dr. Brown’s 7-Day Diet for Glowing Skin.
                      • Exercise, using movements that condition your skin from the inside out.
                      • Apply topical creams–avoiding the ones that only make promises.
                      • Enjoy the benefits of medical procedures without invasive measures.

This program can be easily customized to fit your age and takes into account the changing seasons. Dr. Brown also clearly delineates the facts and fallacies of skin care, shares helpful tips on what to do to see improvements now, and gives you an exclusive preview of products you can look forward to using in the coming years as technology advances even further.

If the condition of your skin is leading you to consider cosmetic procedures, take an about-face and reevaluate your options! Dr. Brown believes that the true source of beauty is not lifts, nips, or tucks. It is the newly discovered ability of your skin to regain the vitality of youth.

5 out of 5 stars simple yet crucial info.......2006-09-23

This book helped me understand what is really happening with your skin. What it responds to and doesn't and what adds aging. I highly recommend it and it's an easy read....helped me with my diet too!

5 out of 5 stars Wide spectrum of information on maintaining healthy skin........2006-03-13

I actually purchased this book because I was interested in purchasing the EGF (epidermal growth factor) cream that I had seen on TV. I had heard that this cream works miracles and wanted to understand it better before spending the $180 on the cream. The book was written by the plastic surgeon who invented the ReVive skin line. This book has a wide spectrum of information on how to create and maintain healthy skin without surgery. It covers everything from diet, vitamins, exercise, yoga and every kind of medical "surface" skin treatments out there. It also covers everything from basic drugstore cleansers and moisturizers, to over-the-counter and prescription topical creams, to intensive dermabrasion and chemical peels. The book gives you a lot of information about a lot of products and the author gives his sound opinion and experience with each. However, because I was buying the book to understand more about the ReVive creams themselves, I was looking for a more in-depth analysis of the skin line. He does explain the chemical components and how it works with the skin, but he does not cover which ReVive creams go with what skin types, what creams (there are many) that work best together, and so forth. I think that overall the entire book really gives you a lot of basic and clinical information on how to best take care of your skin. As a side note: I bought the ReVive Sensitif cream and LOVE it. I had a scar on my face (from recent basal cell removal) that had become a dime size crater on my cheek, now it is almost undetectable and I have been using the cream for about 1 month. I had been using other scar products and was getting no results. If you want the book to learn about ways to take care of your skin then get it, if you want it primarily to learn about ReVive products be prepared for that aspect of the book to be minimal. If you want to know whether the ReVive skin line works....I definitely say yes!
