Number sixteen in the esteemed Redwall animal fantasy series, young readers will find Loamhedge just as wild and woolly as its predecessors. In this chapter of the seemingly endless history of the woodland abbey, adventure is sparked by the sad plight of the haremaid, Martha Braebuck. Due to a terrible event that befell her when she was just an abbey Dibbun, Martha has lost the ability to walk. But when legendary mouse Martin the Warrior comes to her in a dream and explains that the secret to winning back her legs lies within the cursed walls of the ancient abbey Loamhedge, Martha hopes for a hero who will travel to the ruins on her behalf. Enter world-class adventurers Braggon the otter and Sarobando the squirrel. The best friends have come for a visit, and decide to undertake Martha's quest. Yet, just as soon as the two tricksters leave, the peaceful abbey folk fervently wish them back, as Redwall is suddenly under siege from the dread searat Raga Bol and his motley crew of vermin. But even as he endeavors to force the Redwall folk from their cozy nest, Raga Bol is plagued by nightmares of the massive badger archer Lonna Bowstripe, who is coming to end his reign of terror. But will Lonna get to Redwall in time to save the forest folk? And will Martha ever walk again? The only thing that's certain is that the fur will fly and numerous feasts will be noisily consumed in yet another fur-tastic tale from beloved British storyteller Brian Jacques. (Ages 10 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

4 out of 5 stars Bragoon and Saro, Heroes.......2007-07-10

Loamhedge was a pretty good book, with more action and more evil than Triss. Bragoon and Saro's team of partly-retired mischief makers were intresting, as was Martha the haremaid's probem with her legs. Raga Bol was definitly a good villan, with his good-sized horde of rats. Overall, Loamhedge waa a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Correct Review of a Great Book.......2006-11-22

I believe that many of the reviews are misleading. Many complain about the book not being about loamhedge itself (I didn't expect it to be anyway), but that's not a reason for giving a book a bad review. Let's look at the book itself. I have read all but the most recent Redwall book and I have to say this was very good. Here's why:

I'm not going to give the story and spoil everything, but you can read some of the other reviews if you want to. Compared to a number of other Redwall books, this book had a very interesting plot. Many Redwall books (Triss is a perfect stereotype of this) are centered around a hero who eventually inherits Martin's sword and slays the evil warlord of the horde that is attacking Redwall with not much else standing out. Loamhedge follows this somewhat, but it has a very interesting main plot which has almost nothing to do with the evil attacking hordes. It was a very refreshing Redwall book to me.

I agree that Martha's brother and his friends were pretty annoying, but I enjoyed seeing them learn their lessons from two awsome characters. At the end of the story, the trio of troublemakers turn into descent and likable creatures and the reader feels like it was a realistic and substantial change. This had some of the better character developement that Jaques has produced.

This book also has some characters that I really enjoyed. There were two old codgers that are actually battle-hardened warriors with much wisdom in their experience. These were very likable creatures who gave the story and very likable flavor. By the way, a codger is not an animal it is a saying for anyone who didn't know :D

There were a few things that weren't very strong in this book. I don't like the treatment of the group of villians very much; however, the pirate captian was done well. I like how he actually defeated a badger in combat (with his crew helping of course). However, he was not the greatest of the badguys. I would like to see a story that brings back the Wearat. Perhaps he becomes a real tyrant and not just a visitor like the wolverine in Rakkety Tam. But don't expect to see much of the wearat in this book. I say this so that anyone reading the book won't be dissapointed, just be patient and you'll see. It would have been much better if the wearat were more involved with the rest of the story. The main weakness in the book has to be that many potentially intersting things (like the river captian guy early in the story) are not really given much significance and the reader is not able to really make an emotional connection with many of these characters unlike many other Redwall books that bring you very close to many of the characters.

Anyway, aside from a few complaints, this was a great book. I definately don't consider it as highly as my favorites Taggerung, Martin the Warrior, Outcast of Redwall, The Bellmaker, Legends of Luke, the Long Patrol, and of course the original Redwall that started it all. I still think this is the best of the average Redwall books. This is coming from a college student too, so don't think that this book is too childish for you. I have a friend who started reading Redwall in college and he likes them a lot. The series of Redwall including this book of course is definately not just for kids.

Children's rights advocate Shelly Trotter is out of her depth in criminal court, defending a teenager accused of killing a cop. And when she discovers that he may be her own son, nothing--not legal ethics, not political pressure--will stop her from keeping him off of death row.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-08-02

I really enjoyed this book even if Ellis committed several digressions into subjects related to what was happening in the book. Still a good pageturner. After I read this book I went and got his other 3 books. Ellis is somewhere between Grisham and Scott Turrow IMHO.

1 out of 5 stars Grab a pillow - this book is GUARANTEED to put you to sleep .......2006-07-20

Calling this novel a legal thriller would be generous. I'm not feeling generous, not after reading this woefully inadequate third novel by David Ellis. Ellis, in Jury of One, is repetitious and long-winded. Whether he repeats the facts of the case in every other chapter because he feels his audience is slow-witted or to keep track of the plot himself, I don't know. What I do know is that each chapter should move the story FORWARD. I would say that his recitations about Adoption Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Evidence belong in text books (not novels), but much of them are completely wrong. Mr. Ellis, self-defense is an affirmative defense, meaning the burden of proof shifts to the defendant. Even if you are a David Ellis fan, you'd do well to skip this novel. If you choose to read it, grab a box of tissues, because you will be bored to tears.

4 out of 5 stars often silly and painful in its dragged out state, but still worth reading.......2006-03-08

My primary beef with this book is the fact that most of this story relies on the defendant not saying anything. I am not giving away any of the story by saying this. Alex, a young boy, is in prison from the very start. Shelly is his lawyer leaping to his defense. Alex is made out as a pretty smart young lad. Only he has committed a stupid small crime that snowballed and builds up to the point where he is in prison facing murder charges. Most of the rest of this story revolves around Shelly trying to unfold exactly what is going on. So if you look at the whole story and think about what would be left if Alex had told the truth to start with, you would pretty much have nothing left.

So aside from being very well written, as all David Ellis' books are, you are left with pretty much nothing. The story and the mystery go poof when obviously the predictable ending comes to pass. I feel that the writing here is excellent. This story shows that Ellis is better than just about any other writer working in the genre business today. Combine that with a sadly under-whelming story, and you have a readable, sometimes painful story.

            4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Star Legal Thriller.......2006-03-04

This is what a legal thriller should be. A dead-on, courtroom novel, with plot-twists aplenty, scintilating cross-examinations, and revelations that not even the most jaded or experienced readers will see coming. The story's first half is a set-up for the courtroom drama that concludes the story, and the ending reminds me of Turow's ending for Presumed Innocent in terms of how revealing the secret is that lies at the heart of the matter.

An excellent read, and the only reason that it doesn't get five stars is because there's not enough humor, and the lead attorney is more than stiff.

            5 out of 5 stars A Sensational Read - Guaranteed!!!.......2004-09-20

This was my first experience with a David Ellis novel and it left me enthralled. The story is complex and complicated and takes a while to gather steam, but once all the elements have been brought to bear it is an absolute can not put it down read.
It is hard to tell too much about the story without giving away some of the many twists and turns in the plot. The basic story line is that a young woman lawyer who is a children's rights advocate finds herself representing a former client who is charged with the murder of a police officer. The case seems relatively straight forward from the prosecutions's point of view and difficult to defend. But in this tale, things are seldom what they seem. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue is written so well you can hear the voices. Couple that with an outstanding plot and you have a hard to beat combination.
David Ellis has written a legal thriller that is all of that and a bit more.

3 out of 5 stars A quick, enjoyable mystery read.......2007-09-08

This book introduces newspaper reporter Elise Jenkins and police detective Mitch Burns. As they begin their careers and their relationship with each other, they confront a serial killer. Elise and Mitch are likeable, although Elise both of them tend to blush and weep more than is truly practical for their occupations. The book provides a good story with good characters and a surprising solution.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent murder mystery.......2007-08-26

This is the first in a great series of books. Excellent writing and a fast read. I was buying the newest one when I saw I had not reviewed this one. Could have sworn I did.
I have turned several people onto this series. The author is a wonderful warm woman who does book signings and has a great web-site. I recommend this book to all. You will NOT regret it and you will be hooked.
Buy at least the second one Forecast of Evil at the same time so you are not stuck waiting. The books get even better as they go along.

Although I found the mystery intriguing and was unable to figure out the who the murderer was, the writing itself, as well as the almost "simple" leads, were so much less intriguing that I basically skimmed this book.

If anyone who has liked this book is interested in a truly wonderful book based at the Jersey shore, try Chris Grabenstein's "Tilt-a-Whirl" and "Whack A Mole"---great characterizations, mystery and laughs!!!

Laura Bradford's debut mystery is a winner! You'll feel you're right on the boardwalk smelling the breeze coming in over the ocean in a seaside resort town. Elise Jenkins, fresh from journalism school, expects to spend her first weeks on the job at the Ocean Point Weekly covering ordinary events. Instead, she's thrown into reporting a murder of one of the town's residents, and the murders rapidly multiply. Detective Mitch Burns is under great pressure to solve murders that not only have the locals experiencing shock and grief, but may drive away the tourists, too. Both Elise and Mitch get a chance to tell their side of the story, and it's fascinating to learn what each thinks of the other as the investigation (ahem, did I mention romance?) progresses. On top of that, Elise and Mitch are some of the nicest people around, people with whom you're definitely going to enjoy spending time. Bradford keeps you guessing until the end about the villain and the villain's motivation. One of the great things about Elise is the sensitivity she uses in her reporting, respecting both the victims' families and the investigation process. With characters as refreshing as an ocean breeze, a setting so vivid you're going to get a sudden urge for taffy, and a strong whodunit puzzle, the elements of this book come together in a satisfying way. I'm already looking for the next Elise Jenkins mystery!

Anyone who wants to understand how the jury verdicts on OJ or the Menedez brothers will get the info in this book. Once the jury is selected, the conclusion almost happens without bothering with the facts. If your lawyer doesn't know this, hope the other lawyer doesn't either.

                          Book Description

1911. Sellers writes in the Foreword: The introductions to the forensic addresses found in this volume are not lengthy. Although the trials were tragic events in the lives of more than one-crises where hope and fear battled for the mastery of the life in peril or the heart in agony-stories of mere detail might prove uninteresting and unwelcome. I have tried to draw in brief the circumstances that gave interest to each trial, and all the while have had an abiding thought that the reader would realize and feel the inspiration that lifted the orator to heights majestic and sublime. Ms. Green was one of the first fantasy authors I read as a teenager, and I still remember the butterflies in my stomach caused by reading her romantic scenes.

                          4 out of 5 stars A good book, but . . ........2000-07-05

This book is about a very talented sorceress, Laciel, who is sent on a quest to find a missing magical stone on which the fate of the world rests. She is teamed up with a potpourri of other people, each with a unique talent that is vital to the mission. Together they cross various worlds in search of the stolen stone so that balance can be restored in Laciel's world. I lost a lot of sleep over this one, mainly because I could not force myself to put it down! While it is full of action, the book also contains a healthy dose of "emotional stuff" to the mix, with constantly changing relationships and problems. The only reason I did not give this book a "five" was because I found the ending disappointing and unsatisfying. However, since there is a second book out, I'm hoping the author clears things up. If you are the type of person who accepts realistic endings, do yourself a favor and read this book. If you are the kind of person who insists the guy gets the girl (or vice versa) find a different book, 'cause you'll end up screaming, "You stupid, stupid putz! " at the main character (or author), which is generally a bad thing.

Laciel, has been made the head of a strange group to follow an unknown person who stoled the one stone that keeps the world from falling apart. This is a fantastic fantasy story that keeps you on the edge of your seat up to the final page. I recommend this book to anyone.

I picked this book up in a used bookstore I used to frequent (the only reason I don't is because I don't live in that town anymore) I was already familiar with Ms. Green's work, and decided to read it. I'm glad I did. Set in the same universe as her Hidden Realms/Silver Princess series (the main character is even mentioned in one of the books) it follows the powerful sorceress as she tries to save her wizard foster mother, with the help of some very powerful friends. This is the second book in a trilogy, unfortunately, the series is unfinished. The third book has never been published, an maybe never will. Though Ms. Green has told me that she is willing to write it, since the previous books have been allowed to go out of print, it seems unlikely.

3 out of 5 stars Great new science fiction.......2003-01-05

Three stars plus. The first science fiction novel by Robert Zorich is an impressive offering. It is set in southern California in a near future about one generation beyond ours. A team of university scientists builds a transmitter which is designed for instantaneous communication anywhere in the universe. They achieve this by sending their signal backwards in time just enough to compensate for the relatively slow speed of a signal's travel across a great distance. Other's are interested in the transmitter's ability to send a signal through time. Like atomic energy, it is a tempting power with great dangers.

The book's characters are well constructed. The dialog and social interactions flow naturally. There is plenty of action, too. Mr. Zorich tells a story well. He supports the action with enough description and setting to give a clear mental picture without letting the story bog down. This is not the next mind blowing epic like Dune, Hyperion, or Red Mars, but I thought it was much better than many science fiction books that I have read. As a novel, I thought it was better than the Cluster series by Piers Anthony [which I liked]. I also liked it better than some of C J Cherryh's work. Hopefully Mr. Zorich will find an audience and write more of this highly readable and enjoyable scifi.
