Book Description
For Dave Robicheaux, there is no easy passage home. New Orleans, and the memories of his life in the Big Easy, will always haunt him. So to return there -- as he does in Last Car to Elysian Fields -- means visiting old ghosts, exposing old wounds, opening himself up to new, yet familiar, dangers.
When Robicheaux, now a police officer based in the somewhat quieter Louisiana town of New Iberia, learns that an old friend, Father Jimmie Dolan, a Catholic priest always at the center of controversy, has been the victim of a particularly brutal assault, he knows he has to return to New Orleans to investigate, if only unofficially. What he doesn't realize is that in doing so he is inviting into his life -- and into the lives of those around him -- an ancestral evil that could destroy them all.
The investigation begins innocently enough. Assisted by good friend and P.I. Clete Purcel, Robicheaux confronts the man they believe to be responsible for Dolan's beating, a drug dealer and porno star named Gunner Ardoin. The confrontation, however, turns into a standoff as Clete ends up in jail and Robicheaux receives an ominous warning to keep out of New Orleans' affairs.
Meanwhile, back in New Iberia, more trouble is brewing: Three local teenage girls are killed in a drunk-driving accident, the driver being the seventeen-year-old daughter of a prominent physician. Robicheaux traces the source of the liquor to one of New Iberia's "daiquiri windows," places that sell mixed drinks from drive-by windows. When the owner of the drive-through operation is brutally murdered, Robicheaux immediately suspects the grief-crazed father of the dead teen driver. But his assumption is challenged when the murder weapon turns up belonging to someone else.
The trouble continues when Father Jimmie asks Robicheaux to help investigate the presence of a toxic landfill near St. James Parish in New Orleans, which in turn leads to a search for the truth behind the disappearance many years before of a legendary blues musician and composer. Tying together all these seemingly disparate threads of crime is a maniacal killer named Max Coll, a brutal, brilliant, and deeply haunted hit man sent to New Orleans to finish the job on Father Dolan. Once Coll shows up, it becomes clear that Dave Robicheaux will be forced to ignore the warning to stay out of New Orleans, and he soon finds himself drawn deeper into a viper's nest of sordid secrets and escalating violence that sets him up for a confrontation that echoes down the lonely corridors of his own unresolved past.
A masterful exploration of the troubled side of human nature and the darkest corners of the heart, and filled with the kinds of unforgettable characters that are the hallmarks of his novels, Last Car to Elysian Fields is James Lee Burke in top form in the kind of lush, atmospheric thriller that his fans have come to expect from the master of crime fiction.

Good but not his best.......2007-07-11
This is a wonderful story, but not the best JLB novel I've read. This has quite a bit of introspection and psychology, but not enough action. the imagery is unbelievable. Buy this and read this but demand more.
Dave Robicheaux - Yea!.......2007-04-10
This series is a winner throughout. Read it sequentially - check the copyright dates or get a dated list from your local bookstore or library. It is equally, if not more so sometimes, to listen to this series on audiobook, because the readers, Mike Hammer or Will Patton, capture not only Burke's words and thoughts but also the "accent." In a series like this, the accent is as important as everything else, and if you read it in your own voice, and you don't happen to be from Louisiana, you do miss something. If you do audiobook, always do UNabridged.
Hard to read -- easy to sum up.......2007-02-28
Here is the Reader's Digest version of "Last Car to Elysian Fields":
Dave Robicheaux -- reformed drunk, broken man, and bourgeois-hating cop -- wanders around Louisiana in a funk, obsessing about a tragic blues artist from a bygone era, doing inexplicable things that sometimes seem to be related to police work, annoying everyone he encounters, getting people killed, and nearly getting himself killed. Finally, after most of the characters in the book kill each other off, it ends and he spends Christmas in the Florida Keys with his grown daughter who comes home from college.
Burke's prose is atmospheric and well-done and everyone seems to be enamored of it. Sadly, thats not enough to save this ponderous foot-dragger. No one seemed to notice that it was a dull story that plodded on in spite of almost everything its main character did -- which wasn't much. Sorry, but I can't recommend it.
Great writer, another great book.......2006-11-25
One of the common traits with mystery series is that the lead character is typically an outsider. This goes back to the early days of the modern, hard-boiled mystery. Philip Marlowe, Lew Archer or Sam Spade were drawn into the soap operas of other people's lives. While James Lee Burke's stories about Dave Robicheaux definitely fit in this type of genre, Robicheaux is not an outsider. Instead, his stories always seem to involve people he knows and places he's been.
As Last Car to the Elysian Fields (around book 15 in the series) opens, Robicheaux is at another crossroads in his life. His wife Bootsie has died, having finally lost her long battle with Lupus. He has a new boss as his former partner Helen Soileau has been elevated to the post of sheriff. In addition, his house has burnt down due to some bad wiring and his adopted daughter Alafair is off at college. For Robicheaux, the stress is enough to make the former alcoholic want to re-hit the bottle, and things are about to get worse.
Local priest Jimmie Dolan has been aggravating the wrong people, first getting beaten up by a local thug and then getting targeted for assassination. The killer, Max Coll, is an ex-IRA guy who's a bit nuts; he also has just enough of a conscience to not kill Dolan, although this gets him targeted himself. He's still a hit man, however, and he will leave a few more dead by the end of the book, even as he forms a bond with both Dolan and Robicheaux.
Meanwhile, Robicheaux suspects Castille LeJune of the long-ago murder of a jazz musician named Junior Crudup. There are additional entanglements: LeJune owns a liquor store that served alcohol to a teenage girl who later died in an accident; LeJune's son-in-law owns what was once Crudup's land and is now dumping waste there; and LeJune's daughter Theodosia is struggling with her demons and is trying to draw her one-time brief lover Robicheaux into her private hell.
Robicheaux is a man with rage that is barely under control most of the time, and at times he lets loose, causing additional problems. His hatred for certain types of people, especially the wealthy establishment sorts like LeJune, taints his judgment. Only his friend Clete Purcel, who has no inhibitions at all about causing trouble, is somehow able to make Robicheaux sane, at least by comparison.
The plotting and characters are all well-written, but, as always, the thing that makes James Lee Burke really stand out is his descriptive abilities. The images he evokes of Louisiana (in particular, New Iberia and New Orleans) make the place come alive. In certain ways, there may be better authors, but no mystery writer is as good with his imagery as Burke. Last Car to the Elysian Fields is another great novel by one of the best mystery writers - actually one of the best writers, period - around.
Strange happenings in bayou country.......2006-03-29
James Lee Burke's "Last Car to Elysian Fields" featuring New Iberia, Louisiana homicide detective Dave Robicheaux is a provocative book with a rapidly paced multi tiered storyline.
Robicheaux learns that a friend of his, activist priest Father Jimmie Dolan has been mercilessly assaulted. He and his ex- N.O.P.D. partner the immense and belligerent Clete Purcell, now a private investigator, go to New Orleans looking for porn star Gunner Ardoin, the alleged perpetrator to exact revenge on Father Dolan's behalf.
Upon returning to New Iberia a wave of violence appears to follow in Robicheaux's wake. Three inebriated underaged high school girls foolishly get incinerated in a fiery crash caused by their intoxication. Investigation points to the illegal selling of daquiris at a drive through stand. Within short order the owner of the daquiri stand is found shot to death. Soon after Dr. Parks, father of the driver of the vehicle is also shot. Robicheaux has reason to suspect the patrician upper crust Castille Lejeune, a modern day plantation master has a hand in the crimes. Lejeunes daughter Theodosha, a past love interest of Robicheaux and her husband Merchie Flannigan also draw his ire and might be complicit as well.
Robicheaux soon learns that ex-IRA terrorist and now moralistic and elusive hit man Max Coll has arrived from Florida to assassinate Father Jimmie. Coll has inhibitions about the hit and eventually aids Robicheaux is his inquest of the other local crimes.
Robicheaux is also intrigued by the story concerning the whereabouts of all but forgotten blues man Junior Crudup, a contemporary and friend of the legendary blue artist Leadbelly, It seems that Junior who was on a chain gang in the infamous Angola penitentiary disappeared without a trace. Junior and the Red Hat gang toiled in the cane fields surrounding the mansion of Lejeune in the 1950's. Lejeune's wife Andrea took a liking to Crudup's music and invited him often up to the mansion, escorted by a prison guard to play for her. This created great embarrassment for Castille Lejeune. Junior's disappearance led Robicheaux to believe that Lejeune was also responsible for Junior's fate.
Wading through this morass of events, Robicheaux fighting the urge to start drinking again, tries his best to make things right. Burke in his descriptive eloquent style brilliantly navigates us through this fascinating crime drama that unveils both past and present secrets in this picturesque and mysterious deep Southern setting.

Dune is Delightful.......2007-01-10
Mary Daheim never disappoints. Her fine writing and sense of relational storytelling is displayed with joyful attention to detail, a wry humor and deliciously unexpected connetions between well-defined characters. Buccaneer Beach, Oregon, the setting for Dune to Death, is a place that feels familiar, so much so that I can smell the ocean, feel the waves wash over my feet and the sand squish between my toes. Small seaside towns may all seem pretty much the same, but not necessarily when murder lurks beneath the surface. It is then that Dune takes off running, pulling us along for the ride for all we are worth. I can' wait to read it again!
Well Dune Mystery.......2004-10-14
In this mystery, Bed-and-breakfast hostess Judith McMonigle and her new husband, Police Lieutenant Joe Flynn, are on their honeymoon at Buccaneer Beach. But during a dune buggy ride, Joe crashes the buggy, breaking his leg. Judith calls her cousin Renie who agrees to stay with her while Joe is in the hospital. Soon after Renie arrives, they find their landlady dead in their cottage, strangled to death with a kite string. Never one to pass up a mystery, Judith and Renie investigate the murder, as well as look for a buried treasure. Can they solve the mystery and find the treasure before returning home?
This is another fun "cozy" mystery by Mary Daheim. There are tons of humorous moments in this book. It's well plotted and, while I was able to figure out who the murderer was near the end of the book, there were still a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming.
I've read several of these bed and breakfast books by Mary Daheim and I enjoy them more and more. Highly recommended!
Dune to Death.......2001-02-27
Judith McMonigle and her new husband, Police Lieutenenat Joe Flynn, set off optimistically for the Oregon coast to spend their honeymoon. A dune buggy accident sends Joe to the hospital and leaves Judith alone in a spacious cottage. She decides to ask her cousin Renie to come and keep her company while Joe is on the mend. As soon as Renie arrives, the cousins find a dead body, that of their landlady. They become involved in the tangled affairs of the the landlady's family and their past, as they conduct their own investigation of the murder. Another dead body appears and the cousins become even more confused about the identity of the perpretrator. This is another entertaining "cozy" from the dependable Judith Daheim and should be pleasing to her fans.
Cute but simple mystery..........1999-09-13
I always love Mary Daheim's sweet, cozy mysteries. This one is more simple than most, with only a novice mystery reader not being able to figure out the situation early on. But still a worthy read.

Three thumbs up!!!.......2006-05-19
Dreamlife of Death was the most captivating novel I've ever read. It left me wanting more. The descriptions were very vivid, making me feel as though I were right there amongst the sinister world Travis Neil Robbins has created. Each vicarious character has their own vital role in the book, making them appear dimensional and complex. The author expertly weaves a web with these characters, intertwining their paths into one creative plot. Travis Neil Robbins is pure genius. If I had to choose between one of his books or Stephen King's, I would definitely choose a Robbins novel. He grabs his reader by the face and head-butts them. Reading his books is a truly intense experience!

Book Description
Dr. Dean Ornish is the first clinician to offer documented proof that heart disease can be halted, or even reversed, simply by changing your lifestyle. Based on his internationally acclaimed scientific study, which has now been ongoing for years, Dr. Ornish's program has yielded amazing results. Participants reduced or discontinued medications; their chest pain diminished or disappeared; they felt more energetic, happy, and calm; they lost weight while eating more; and blockages in coronary arteries were actually reduced.
In his breakthrough book, Dr. Ornish presents this and other dramatic evidence and guides you, step-by-step, through the extraordinary Opening Your Heart program, which is winning landmark approval from America's health insurers. The program takes you beyond the purely physical side of health care to include the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects so vital to healing. This book represents the best modern medicine has to offer. It can inspire you to open your heart to a longer, better, happier life.
Customer Reviews:
This diet works!!!!!.......2007-09-19
This program works as my father is living proof. You have to be very dedicated to be able to follow it. My father refuses to have any kind of surgery, meds etc and has followed Dr Ornishs program in this book and has lost weight, and his cholesterol is down and he feels great. His Dr says to keep doing what he is doing.
research.......2007-05-24
Dr Ornish just skips over mountains of research on the healing benefits of various oils and essential fatty oils.He substitues his own "clinical trials" for independent research.I will wait for the independent research to come out before I make an evaluation of his diet.
UNGAINLY FOR THE READER.......2007-05-20
I am unhappy to report that the presentation of Dr. Ornish's book makes it impossible to absorb the information.
The font in the paperback is uncomfortably small, and the typesetting is scrunched leaving minimal space, making it impossible for the eye to rest comfortably and stay with the text.
Consequently it is a frustrating read and difficult for the reader to take advantage of Dr. Orinish's expertise.
Had I been forewarned I would not have purchased this edition.
Saved my father's health!!.......2007-03-14
I purchased this book in Spring of 2004 for my father who had just suffered from a moderate heart attack and he started following the diet almost immediately; within a year his arteries were completely free of any signs of buildup. His cardiologist who had never even mentioned a modification to his diet was impressed and told him that most people aren't willing to change their eating habits that much. He is currently healthier than ever and no longer takes any prescription medications, only daily vitamin E to keep his blood thin as well as "regular" vitamin and mineral supplementation. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to reverse their heart disease in a non-traditional way!
Empower yourself to improve your health.......2007-01-12
Dr. Ornish's excellent book is readable, entertaining, and full of valuable information on how to prevent heart disease.

Customer Reviews:
A nice survey of the medical benefits of Asana.......2007-08-31
Summary, helpful addition to the library of someone with a little experience, but not recommended for true beginners.
Details:
This book provides two pre-sequenced yoga series and a large number of "case studies" regarding some way that yoga has helped various medical issues. In many cases, it also suggests several asana that may assist in those medical issues. The goal is to show people how yoga can impact the overall health, rather than just being a tool for flexibility.
I found this approach useful given a reasonable background in yoga, but do not recommend it for a beginner. For someone with background in the Asana, it can help to provide a broader view of the potential benefits of each asana. I have found this useful for adjusting my home practice, particularly to make adjustments around current flucations in my health (for example, if my asthma is flaring up). While you may get some of this information in a group class, my experience is that it tends to come in a haphazard manner (e.g. "your ashtma is bad today? Well, the forward bends should help."). This book allows me to build a more comprehensive and systematic understanding. Also, it frequently states that its arguements are from medical studies, which makes me feel a little better than when the comment is based on something my teacher heard from another guy who once had a similar problem sort of approach. It would have been nice to have references to the studies, but at least I feel like there is some basis here.
As far as not recommending the book for beginners - I don't think the description of the asana are complete enough to really help get you there with the form. Also, there is generally only one picture of each asana, so you are limited to seeing it fully applied and from only one angle. This is helpful if you have already learned it from another source (for example, some of the names where different but once I saw the picture I was on board). But it really want get you there if you are not already familiar with the pose. Also, I believe you are better off having some idea of sequencing prior to starting with the book. That will make sure that you are well balanced in choosing your routine.
EXCELLENT PRODUCT, !A+++++ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2007-01-13
"Thank you for the rapid shipping, such a great price for this excellent brand new book.I will definately buy from you again!"
Dr. Yoga.......2005-09-18
Awesome book.
Yoga meets traditional western medicine. In addition to great information on yoga, asanas, and the medical aspect of the asanas. There is great information on the programs that are being started in western hospitals that include meditation and yoga. The challenges associated with the introduction of eastern traditions and the triumphs that have occured.
This is a wonderful book whether you are a yoga practitioner or someone who's more traditional in the western sense and want to learn how yoga can be included in that framework.
Yogi, Heal Thyself!.......2004-11-25
If you'd like to try yoga, but you think it's a lot of hooey, you should read this book, especially if you have a specific condition which probably yoga can benefit. You can just look up your disease, and find out what yoga poses can benefit you. It even describes HOW the different poses work on the body and what the health effect is. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are even pictures!
