Book Description
A nineteenth-century Japanese novel concerned with man's loneliness in the modern world.
Customer Reviews:
subtle, disturbing examination of the heart.......2007-05-05
A young student befriends an older man in Tokyo. The older one's intellectual abilities, and his sophistication gains him the title of 'Sensei' - roughly approximating 'teacher' or 'master' - from the younger one.
Though he likes him well enough, Sensei does nothing to encourage the young man's growing attachment to him. This only increases the student's interest in Sensei's life, who responds finally to his overtures of friendship and respect thus: 'I do not want your admiration now, because I do not want your insults in the future. I bear with my loneliness now in order to avoid greater loneliness in the years ahead. You see, loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves'.
The novel is structured in three parts. The first two are narrated by the student, and the third is a 'testament' in letter form by Sensei, outlining the story of his life, and explaining why he has for so long withdrawn from the outside world.
Sensei's testament is a profound self-examination and self-criticism, mostly revolving around his selfish and manipulative actions, in his own student days, when he and his friend (a fellow student) were both in love with the same girl (now Sensei's wife). This behaviour leads, in the end, to catastrophic results for his friend. From that period on, though Sensei has appeared outwardly normal and happy, his life has been completely blighted.
What makes the novel such a significant work for Western readers (other than its literary excellence) is the distinctly Japanese point of view it brings to an old story. This new perspective brings up a large number of worrying (because unanswerable) questions. How much, for instance, does Sensei's failure to forgive himself for his earlier mistakes arise from his culture's sense of 'honour', and how much from human nature?
Kokoro translates as 'the heart of things', a perfect title for a book that delicately, subtly and finally disturbingly, probes the mystery that is the core of human life.
slow..........2007-01-10
this book is a classic in japan, how eer i think its kind of dull, I had to read this book for a history class, it gives a good perspective of japan during the 1900's.
Deep ruminations on friendship and loyalty.......2007-01-02
This is the story of a student, who befriends an older man named Sensei. (Sensei used as an affirmation of respect, rather than an actual teacher) As the relationship moves over time, the student and reader learn more about the teacher, and an the emotional scars he bears.
The first half of the book is about the bond that develops between the student and Sensei, who reluctantly accepts this new person in his life. The second half is a confessional written from the sensei's point of view.
The book is more introspection than plot, and reveals Soseki's thoughts about loyalty, friendship and duty. It's dark undertones, and the required "reading between the lines" mark it a distinctly Japanese novel - don't expect a typical Western story. Even with what's lost in translation, the book is a masterpiece.
From the Heart of a Lonely Man.......2006-10-30
This is a must read book. Not just once, but many times. Each time you read it you understand and see a different view of the book. One needs to read this book from the Heart as the meaning of Kokoro means from the Heart. The story of a married man, yet lonely. Why he feels guilty about the death of his best friend. A scholar with no ambition, rich enough to enjoy a few simple things in life. How he talks about the ending of his own life. He is sure his wife will be taken care of after his death. The student is confused. I am confused. Read the book more than once. Each time you read, put yourself in each characters "shoe". Written with passion, Kokoro, from the Heart. Is this book fiction or non-fiction, you decide.
A drifting story from the floating world.......2006-10-05
Not so much a story, maybe, as a sketch of evolving emotion. I can't really say that I managed to find a plot in it, but plot isn't the only way to push a narrative forward.
The book opens in the voice of an un-named, first-person narrator. He's a college student, approaching the independence of an adult life but with emotions on a middle-school roller coaster, perhaps an Eastern Young Werther in that respect. He develops a friendship, then a fascination with the man identified only as Sensei ("master" or "teacher"). Sensei opens a little tothe friendship, but can never open all the way. Some force within him holds back, in terms of emotional commitment, which only taunts the narrator into grasping after - well, something. A clear but odd emotional ambience comes across. I want to call it a schoolboy crush, but wholly without romantic or physical overtones. Well, maybe romantic, in a Platonic way, or romanticized.
The second segment of the book turns our narrator largely away from Sensei and towards his family. The family relationship keeps changing, depending on the angle from which it's seen. The parents see the boy as their pride and as their family's conduit into the future, a conduit in need of a properly receptive vessel for carrying the next generation. He sees them as rural bumpkins, but is still torn to see his father collapsing by inches under disease.
Within the book's own logic, this leads to third and final segment: Sensei's monolog, an emotional autobiography. It's about being betrayed and betraying, about the closeness and isolation of marriage, and about many more of the contradictions in the human condition. Although familiar, at least in outline, they loom large in his own mind, to the point of eclipsing all of the comforts within his hand's reach.
There is no resolution, just an end. It's not a Western book at all, at least not within the categories I know. It's just a sketch of passion, ignorance, and despair, and of how they can crowd out all the quiet pleasures that life offers.

Book Description
Kokoro no Te, translated into English as "handmade from the heart," is the philosophy behind this enchanting collection of small, high-fashion craft projects that have a distinctive Japanese flair. Featuring purses, pins, sewing accoutrements, and the author's amazing temari balls, the 30 original hand-sewn designs combine surprisingly simple techniques with exquisite colors and fabrics, allowing sewers to create lavish objets d'art easily and inexpensively. A delightful and original array of fashion pins, brooches, purses, and keepsake pouches creatively combine silks, cottons, and soft felts with delicate beading and embroidery. A pattern for a doll-sized kimono is included along with designs for pin cushions, thimbles, and a needle cache. The sensational color photographs and line drawings show multiple points of view for each project and show precisely how each artful, stylish, and charming piece comes together.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful creations, but..........2007-05-14
Kumiko is a master of her craft and her book shows some of her cutest work. While the patterns are fairly simple. she leaves out important hints that make recreating her projects difficult if you aren't paying attention. Pay close attention to the weight and type of fabric that she uses but does not mention in her directions. If you use a heavier fabric than what she used, you may need to adjust the pattern to make it work. I wouldn't recommend this for a complete beginning sewer. Otherwise this is a great book full of fun projects.
Omiyage.......2007-01-23
Lots of lovely ideas in this book, had to alter some sizing, but no problems
Cute!.......2006-08-25
I love the book, and love making all the cute things in it. However, the first time I made the fish, her instructions referred to part C (or maybe D?)of the fish, and the template for the part was nowhere to be found. I was able to make my own template, but it was irritating.
Kokoro no Te.......2006-07-01
I purchsed this for my wife. She is an artist and loves artistic items from Japan - ever since visitng Japan last year. She loves this book andf keeps it on our coffee table in easy reach. The instructions are excellent and the presentation is of high quality.
Exquisite Small Gifts to Make.......2006-01-27
This is the second of Kumiko Sudo's books I have purchased and fallen in love with. There is sure to be a special project that will appeal to your senses and compel you to spend the hours creating just that perfect piece! The projects are small, and require patience and careful attention to detail. That said, the hand sewing can be done in front of the television or while riding in the car.
Items evoke a delight when given as gifts and are perfect for those who have everything. These patterns seem a bit more difficult than those in the Omiyage book and require a bit more imagination to fill in the steps not illustrated. If you enjoy challenging projects, you will love this book.
The Temari balls have become an bit of an issue at my house. I make them for my children and our Siamese cat grabs the balls and runs with them from the kids! So if you have cats or want to make a very special gift for a friend with cats, you could make a Temari ball with a bit of catnip inside!

Shinobu Kokoro: Hidden Heart.......2007-10-05
This Book with the three different stories in it. I s very excllent and I wish there would be a book two fromthis same authur. I would recommened buying this book if you are into a very go read.
Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-03-17
Though it seems like hot ninjas and yaoi should be a recipe for one yummy manga, SHINOBU KOKORO: HIDDEN HEART leaves a reader's appetite less than satisfied.
The book is a collection of stories that focus on a school of sorts for young wannabe ninjas. The sensei's got a thing for his pupil, and through various 'training sessions' that revolve more around having sex than learning anything else, this certainly isn't a typical dojo! But the stories suffer from terribly weak plots, uninteresting dialog and artwork that looks pretty in some panels and scratchy/coarse in most. I'm sensing the mangaka might have been rushed to meet a few deadlines during the initial serialized release of this manga in Japan.
There are some redeeming qualities, however, the most important one being the abundance of love scenes! For a quick yaoi fix, SHINOBU does it's job nicely. But for collectors who would rather save their hard-earned cash for more worthwhile reads, skip it.
Re-read-ability for this manga is a "4", meaning I probably won't pick it up again, but would give away to a friend if s/he were interested.
Hot Sex, Scant Plot.......2007-03-06
First of all, I have to say that, as the title indicates, there are a lot of sex scenes in here. Pretty hot ones, too. And it's about the most uncensored I've ever seen in a yaoi manga.
However, the plot is....let's call it lacking.
By the way, this is spoilers galore down here.
Really. I spoil everything.
I'm serious.
Story one: Ninja-in-training+Ninja master. This arc is split into two stories. Part One basically consists of secks, love confession, and more secks. Story Two is basically sex in a schoolboy outfit. I cannot stress how ridiculously everything that happens in the story is obviously there for the sole purpose of instigating sex.
Story two: Two ninjas. Confession, sex. One falls off a mountain. Now this would be a good plot twist, if the other ninja didn't find him about two pages later completely unharmed. Sex ensues
Story three: Boy and Snow Spirit. It's never specified how young this boy is, but it's not so young as to give readers the icks. Some may call this shota, I personally don't. This story isn't half-bad. VERY fluffy, romancey, never any conflict to speak of, never any plot to speak of for that matter.
If you're looking for some quick hot sex fix, go for this. But be warned. I count myself as somebody who will overlook some plot gaps for a good romance. But this, I found myself rolling my eyes at. Good for hot yaoi, bad for good plot.
My first Yaoi.......2007-02-09
I'm surprise i even picked this up one day. but ever since i got it, i've become hooked on Yaoi. My guy friends run away when i even say the word....and my best friends giggle as they look at the books with me.
I LOVED this. Nice cute couples and stories, not to mention nice art and sexy scenes. The only problem i had with it is that the stories are short yes....but...a little too short. I like Yaoi series more then collections of short stories, but overall i loved this manga!
Very sweet plot and beautiful art!.......2006-05-01
I really like this yaoi novel because there are three diff stories in one. The art is simply amazing, a must have for a yaoi fan!

Book Description
The 15 essays collected here examine the inner spiritual life of Japan through the people that make Japan the unique place it is. The word "Kokora" itself can be translated as "heart," "spirit" or "inner meaning," and that's exactly what this title teaches us about Japan.
Book Description
Hailed by The New Yorker as "rich in understanding and insight," Kokoro — "the heart of things" — is the work of one of Japan's most popular authors. This thought-provoking trilogy of stories explores the very essence of loneliness and stands as a stirring introduction to modern Japanese literature.
Customer Reviews:
Good Reading.......2007-05-13
The writer gives not so much precise and graphic details but sensitive, poignant and "to the point" narration that leaves the readers satisfied nonetheless. He narration gives realistic and intimate account of mediocre people in despair.
Book Description
Generally speaking, we construct for endurance, the Japanese for impermanency. Few things for common use are made in Japan with a view to durability. The straw sandals worn out and replaced at each stage of a journey; the robe consisting of a few simple widths loosely stitched together for wearing, and unstitched again for washing; the fresh chopsticks served to each new guest at a hotel... -from "The Genius of Japanese Civilization" Kokoro, roughly translated into English, means "heart," though it can also signify the emotional mind, spirit, courage, and resolve. In 1896, just as Japan was opening to the West and interest in Japanese culture in the outside world was flowering, Western expatriate Lafcadio Hearn published this charming and insightful valentine to his adopted country. In sweetly lyrical prose, Hearn extols the "strange morality" of Japanese crime and punishment, the startling beauty of Japanese music, the graceful demureness of Japanese women, and much more. Japanophiles and travelers to the East will delight in this extraordinary foreign journal by a traveler so in love with the land that he stayed for the rest of his life. Bohemian and writer PATRICK LAFCADIO HEARN (1850-1904) was born in Greece, raised in Ireland, and worked as newspaper reporter in the United States before decamping to Japan. He also wrote Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan (1894), In Ghostly Japan (1899), and Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation (1904).

Book Description
SIMENON BEFORE MAIGRET!
Georges Simenon (1903-1989) not only created the finest series of French detective novels in the cases of Inspector Jules Maigret, but he was also, according to André Gide, "perhaps the greatest and most truly `novelistic' novelist in France today." But before he wrote about Maigret, he contributed series of short tales to the magazine Détective in 1929 and 1930, collected in 3 books. The first of those volumes, The 13 Culprits, has never previously been published in English, despite extravagant praise from Alexander Woolcott, Ellery Queen, and other experts.
The detections of Monsieur Froget, the "Examining Magistrate," are set among the people of a city the young Simenon knew well. As the translator, Peter Schulman, says in the introduction, "it is a marginal Paris, populated by society's losers who, for one reason or another, are brought down by a petty vice, or a greedy aspiration, that invariably leads to a bitter sense of failure in their lives
and, of course, a crime they hubristically think they can get away with. It is the lonely city within all levels of the Parisian mosaic; a Paris made up of eccentric individuals who all, in some manner or another, feel as though they have been hung out to dry on the fringes of society." It is a Paris of prostitutes, adventurers, circus artistes, and the flotsam thrown up by the First World War. It is a world captured by a great writer.
Customer Reviews:
An immature Simenon.......2006-09-09
If one is used to and captivated by Simenon and especially his psychological thrillers this immature work though extremely popular in its day will be diappointing. On the other hand there is so much Simenon out there it is also a poor introduction to the later master and might prevent one from delving deeper or further.

Why yes. It is a followup........2000-04-10
Brought on by the success of the previous 4 books from Tanith Lee's flat earth.
There is no central plot. No cataclysmic schemes or happenings. And by that very absence we are free to see the central theme running through all the flat earth books (including this one). The reason they are marvels.
It is Ms. Lee's own version of "Nevertheless". (In my opinion much better that the original).
So we are pawn on the chessboard of the gods. So they pull us high or low by whim and happenstance. So what? Do you not hear the singing of the lark! It is so wonderful to be alive.
Customer Reviews:
Read John and Anna Kilpatrick Instead.......2002-09-06
Alan Proctor is the son of the two very wonderful scholars: John and Anna Kilpatrick. In this book, he took their unpublished notes and add his own commentary. They obviously left this information unpublished because of the volatile nature of the subject. In his comments about Cherokee people and even his own relatives, Alan is both patronizing and insulting. He writes from an Anglo anthropological perspective that is out of touch with the Cherokee community. There are so many other books on Cherokee culture that are far superior to this book.
The Night Has A Naked Soul.......2001-08-22
Cherokee mysticism was seldom whispered about in the outside world until James Mooney began his scholarly research in 1891. And there had been no comprehensive study of Cherokee supernaturalism since until Alan Kirkpatrick undertook this study. This is an excellent source book which examines in depth the Cherokee sacred formulas, the idi:gawé:sdi, which have been largely hidden and almost forgotten by this generation. Kirkpatrick discusses shamanic text which serves to cloak the spells in a "secret language whose meanings can only be deciphered by those who have the key and thus are initiated into the code." Some of the spells discussed include those for divining, for poultice making, to counteract evil thinkers, to forget the dead and to trap night walkers. I must add that these spells are considered "ritually dead" and can only be revived by observing certain well-guarded ceremonial purification rites. This is not a story book with a well constructed plot and a breath-taking ending. Rather it is an "instruction manual" geared to those on the Medicine Path who need help understanding the Way.
A very interesting look into Cherokee beliefs.......1998-12-11
Even though this book was a requred text I was really surprised to see that Native Americans have beliefs in witchcraft. The book is really worth the purchasing and was really worth my time. Kilpartick made a hard subject simple and easy to understand.

Customer Reviews:
Likely To Improve Your Game.......2006-06-13
This book offers a good deal of useful information to the beginner and intermediate racquetball player. Even if you have played racquetball for some time, this book should still offer you some practical advise and strategies to improve your skills. The book is logically organized around 18 "steps to success," and there are instructions for specific drills to be carried out individually or with a partner to master each step. A number of figures complement the explanations throughout the book, though I wish the author had also included some real-life pictures to better illustrate some of the techniques. I have played racquetball intermittently for many years without much formal instruction, and this book, indeed, improved my game. All and all, this is a good source to read and refer to if you wish to develop as a racquetball player.
Be a better player, if you have not had other instruction........2002-12-04
This book was definitely designed for a beginner to low intermediate player that has not had any organized racquetball training. The six rules to a better game really have helped me, by teaching me winning strategy. The six rules are also not to overwhelming to stay focused on the techniques during my games.
Nice workbook format with very good diagrams and practice drills to actually get you on the court practicing. The practice drills focus on building each individual skill allowing the end result to come to you naturally over time and practice (sorry the perfection of the skill does take time and practice- otherwise we'd all be incredible wouldn't we)?
I also liked that fact that the author did not bore me with the history of the game, the racquet, or many other frivolous items (there are a few, but they are quick). He gets down to the business of how to simply play better racquetball.
I cheated and skipped around from chapter to chapter getting the most bang for my buck in the shortest time. If something in a chapter needed some supporting info or skill I was referred back to the other chapter. However, I read the entire book and did find some great info on areas that I was more familiar with before I started the book.
If you are an advanced player look elsewhere for improving an intermediate or better game. If you are starting out or never learned racquetball strategy you can't go wrong with this book.
Good for Learning and Reference.......2000-08-26
This book has been a great source of information and has helped to improve my game. The author does a good job of identifying the different aspects of the game and describes each well. The various shot drills and court diagrams are also a great learning tool. Anyone who wants to improve their racquetball and follows this manual can't help but get better.
Good Overview/Practice Book.......2000-02-29
This is a worthy book to have around. It includes many drills to help you home in, especially useful are the "what youre doing wrong" sections.
Good drill book.......1999-03-15
This book is good for people who are just beggining and for people that have been playing for a while. This book has alot of the usual knowledge and strategy but alot of drills and dril charts that have improved my game. This book never leaves my bag
