Book Description
Dwight B. Wilmerding is only twenty-eight, but he’s having a midlife crisis. He lives a dissolute existence in a tiny apartment with three (sometimes four) slacker roommates, holds a mind-numbing job at the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, and has a chronic inability to make up his mind. Encouraged by one of his roommates to try an experimental drug meant to banish indecision, Dwight jumps at the chance (not without some vacillation about the hazards of jumping) and swallows the first fateful pill. And when all at once he is “pfired” by Pfizer and invited to a rendezvous in exotic Ecuador with the girl of his long-ago prep-school dreams, he finds himself on the brink of a new life. The trouble–well, one of the troubles–is that Dwight can’t decide if the pills are working. Deep in the jungles of the Amazon, in the foreign country of a changed outlook, his would-be romantic escape becomes a hilarious journey into unbidden responsibility and unwelcome knowledge–and an unexpected raison d’être.

Benjamin Kunkel’s brilliantly comic debut novel concerns one of the central maladies of our time–a pathological indecision that turns abundance into an affliction and opportunity into a curse.
Dwight B. Wilmerding is only twenty-eight, but he’s having a midlife crisis. Of course, living a dissolute, dorm like existence in a tiny apartment and working in tech support at the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer are not especially conducive to wisdom.
And a few sessions of psychoanalysis conducted by his sister have distinctly failed to help with his biggest problem: a chronic inability to make up his mind.
Encouraged by one of his roommates to try an experimental pharmaceutical meant to banish indecision, Dwight jumps at the chance (not without some meditation on the hazards of jumping) and swallows the first fateful pill. And when all at once he is “pfired” from Pfizer and invited to a rendezvous in exotic Ecuador with the girl of his long-ago prep-school dreams, he finds himself on the brink of a new life.
The trouble–well, one of the troubles–is that Dwight can’t decide if the pills are working. Deep in the jungles of the Amazon, in the foreign country of a changed outlook, his would-be romantic escape becomes a hilarious journey into unbidden responsibility and unwelcome knowledge.
How to affirm happiness without living in constant denial of the ways of the world? How to commit, and to what? At once funny and poignant, gentle and outrageous, finely intelligent and proudly silly,
Indecision rings with a voice of great energy and originality, while its deeper inquiries reflect the concerns and style of a generation.
From the Hardcover edition.

Ehhh..........2007-09-21
I picked this up on sale at a book store and thought it looked like an interesting read based on the description. There were some funny parts here and there. I agree with the other reviewers that it went downhill when the main character goes to Ecuador (which is about half way through). What I disliked the most, however, was how the book just stopped without a real good ending to the story and just started going on and on about the author's political views. I don't think it was the worst book I've ever read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone else.
Waste of Time.......2007-08-23
A disappointing debut, in which an overeducated, undermotivated urbanite expounds at great length on many random topics about which he knows next to nothing, first in New York and then in Ecuador, accompanied by an unconvincingly portrayed, stereotypically European fantasy object. Despite the exotic scenery, barely anything of note happens in this book; the plot, such as it is, exists solely as an excuse for Kunkel's irritatingly precious philosophising, which reads as if it was plagarized from the diary of a precocious high schooler.
There's a big-speech moment near the end where Kunkel's mouthpiece, the improbably-named Dwight Wilmerding, potentially could have rescued the book from incoherence, but the character blows the speech big time, and Kunkel actually seems to congratulate him for this.
If this book has a saving grace, it's that it's relatively short.
The book was fantastic.......2007-05-09
I loved every bit of this book. It's a cliche comparison, I know, but the feeling I got from reading Salinger I also get from this book. I highly recommend it.
Bo-ring.......2007-04-03
Dwight Wilmerding is in his late twenties and cannot really make up his mind what to do with his life: he dates a girl with whom he is not really in love, he has a job he does not really like, he uses drugs but not wholeheartedly and he still lives in the student apartment despite the fact that he has a job now. In fact he feels he cannot make up his mind on anything, that's why he is quite excited when a friend offers him a new experimental drug against indecision. Unfortunately, he starts taking it right at the moment that he also decides to visit an old classmate in Ecuador. The moment he arrives the classmate disappears and Dwight gets stuck with an anthropologist to be, Brigid, who is half Argentian, half Belgian and about as vague as Dwight. Naturally they fall in love and all is well that ends well.
What a totally predictable, not funny at all, boring book. I couldn't care less about the petty problems that Dwight entertains (such as his hairy buttocks, YUCK) and the rest is rather predictable as well.
WORST BOOK (I EVER LISTENED TO).......2006-09-21
Actually, first the good: I laughed out loud around 3 times, I think, mainly at the drinking and drug induced moments of clarity that Dwight would have and were pretty funny. Those were the only times I felt I could come anywhere near to relating to these characters, who in real life, I would avoid like a plague of abulea. Although, in real life, they would all be exactly the same annoying person.
Beyond that, I think I have neck strain from shaking my head in disbelief about how stupid and predictable the plot was, how lame and flat the characters were, how hard the author tried to make some vague cliched statement about "our generation". That last one might be what set me off and prompted me to write this the most. It was like the angry fantasy an older generation might have about how people in their twenties are "these days". Am I reacting to things I recognize in myself? Partly, I'm sure. But it's not nearly the whole story. This was like a cartoon. A cardboard Onion-esque joke, but without a punchline or irony.
Vapid and over-educated, dull, self-important and mean characters are supposed to represent our generation? New Yorkers should be torqued off for this portayal. The slacker cliche has been marketed out of relevance. MOVE ON. It rang false and poisonous even when "Generation X" came out.
For a few minutes I thought, Oh! it's a retooling of Camus' "The Stranger", great! Dwight is so aimless and nihilistic and he's going to surprise us with some impulsive move. Well, no. Far from surprising, he moves around like an emasculated drone and when he starts having vague "suicidal ideation", you wish he'd get on with it. His weak, self-serving (which he's never called out on) morals, and lack of will keep him rolling on to a stunningly runny whack off fantasy of a conclusion.
Here's how I'd like to leave this book and review... with my own fantasy that the author hates his characters as much as I do. That it was all a big joke, and in his next book, which I'm sure he's writing, Dwight is murdered by Bolivian "democratic socialists" who became annoyed with his philosophical diarrhea. That kind a twist would represent "our generation"!

Book Description
The stunning continuation of the timeless classic The Phantom of the Opera. In The Phantom of Manhattan, acclaimed, bestselling suspense novelist Frederick Forsyth pens a magnificent work of historical fiction, rife with the insights and sounds of turn-of-the-century New York City, while continuing the dramatic saga which began with Gaston Leroux's brilliant novel The Phantom of the Opera....More than two decades have passed since Antoinette Giry, the mistress of the corps de ballet at the Paris Opera, rescued a hideously disfigured boy named Erik from a carnival and brought him to live in the labyrinthine cellars of the opera house. Soon thereafter, his intense, unrequited love for a beautiful chorus girl set in motion a tragic string of events, forcing him to flee Paris forever. Now, as she lies dying in a convent, Madam Giry tells the untold story of the Phantom and his clandestine journey to New York City to start anew, where he would become a wealthy entrepreneur and build the glorious Manhattan Opera House....all so he could see his beloved, now a famous diva, once again. But the outcome of her visit would prove even more devastating than before-- and yet, would allow the Phantom to know, for the first time in his brutal life, the true meaning of love....

Expected A Lot Better Than This.......2007-08-04
After having read so many bad reviews about this book, I knew I didn't want to purchase it. But after finding it at our local library (and in lieu of any other Phantom-related fiction in the library database), I signed it out, determined to like the book no matter what anyone else said.
Better known for such novels as "The Odessa File" and "The Day of the Jackal", one would expect a grand novel about our Phantom from Frederick Forsyth. But even me, in all of my inflexible optimism, had trouble with this book.
In his acknowledgements, Mr. Forsyth says: "The idea of even attempting to write a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera derives from a first conversation with Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. It was during further and intensive discussion that the basic outline emerged between us and I remain grateful for the benefits of his imagination and enthusiasm." Mr. Forsyth makes grand use of the monkey musical box, the song "Masquerade", and even mentions the death of Piangi in his novel, all of which are obviously Webber-inspired themes. Forsyth's Mme Antoinette Giry even rescues Erik from a carnival, although Erik is a teenager of 16 rather than just a youth as depicted in the movie. Or was the carnival rescue initially Forsyth's idea and ALW used it for the movie?
Whatever...the book is a disappointment to the legend of our beloved Phantom.
If you've read other reviews, then you know that the author rips Leroux's novel up one side and down the other in the Preface. OK...I concede that Mr. Leroux may have taken some literary license with his novel. Perhaps it's a bit much to swallow that, as having been a reporter himself, he would insist that everything in his story is absolutely true and has nothing to back it up. And while there were times when I read Leroux's novel that I wondered if it were, in deed, fact - I realized that I was reading fiction and that even if the basic premise may have been based on fact, the story itself was still fiction.
Mr. Forsyth, in speaking of Leroux's novel, says: "The basic idea is there and it is brilliant, but the way poor Gaston tells it is a mess." I'll agree. Leroux's novel isn't easy to read. But if he read the original translation, no wonder he had trouble with it. The "mess" probably had more to do with the translation than Gaston's literary skills.
After having criticized Leroux's novel for about 10 or 12 pages, he begins his own sequal with the Confession of Antoinette Giry. Near death, she tells the priest at her bedside the story of Erik; his childhood and confesses how she "stole" him from the carnival. A previously summoned lawyer enters the room and she gives the lawyer a letter that she wants delivered to Erik Muhlheim in Manhattan.
Two chapters of the book are written from Erik's point of view. The rest of the book is told from the alternating viewpoints of various minor characters, and from them we glean the story of Erik and Christine, and their meeting once again in New York. I wondered what Mr. Forsyth's reasons were for using minor character POV to tell most of the story? Was it to retain a certain mystery about the Phantom, since the characters' observances were limited? I couldn't help getting the feeling that I was being "cheated" out of the real story.
If Mr. Forsyth insisted on using first person POV, I sincerely wish he would have alternated between the main characters, including Pierre de Chagny, Christine's son. Pierre's instructor, a priest who travels with him and his mother to New York, has a conversation with God in one of his chapters, while Darius, Erik's servant, has conversations with the devil. Perhaps it could have been handled in a more interesting way, but personally, I found it irritating reading.
It may be that the basic outline that Mr. Forsyth and ALW came up with had great potential, but in Mr. Forsyth's hands, it "is a mess" and much less interesting than Leroux's original novel.
My favorite Phantom sequels have a special shelf that I reserved for their preservation. A copy of this book won't be among them.
Don't bother!.......2007-07-30
First paperback I've ever burned and the second book. The other one was a textbook that was horribly out of date.
I'd rather have read the textbook again. I couldn't make it halfway, it's pure drivel. Not one character is even close to the story that it's based on, ALW's Phantom of the Opera. This got one star because it wouldn't allow the review without a rating.
If you buy this, make sure you have a fire going in the fireplace. You'll want to shelve it there.
this is not original phantom.......2007-07-03
Well this book is not original phantom of the opera, instead author use his own style to describe how phantom COULD continue.
I Like It !!!!.......2007-06-03
I was searching for this book because ALW is making this book sequal into a musical sequal of his version of The Phantom of The Opera. I have enjoyed reading the book alot. You really can't take this as a sequal with the first book by Gaston Leroux's original novel, you actually need to go off the Broadway Musical of The Phantom of The Opera because it follow that format more..which I prefer. If you loved the musical than definately check this book out. If You watch the movie of the musical than read the book afterwards you'll see how well the fit together.
Worst Book Ever.......2007-05-21
I'd give it 0 stars if I could. Sure, it's entertaining, but only in how bad it is.
The plot doesn't make sense; the characters don't make sense. Part of Forsyth's problem is that he had no respect for the original story (he actively dislikes Leroux's original, which he talks about in the introduction in my copy), and it shows. Why on earth would you write a sequel to a book you don't even like?! If he thinks he's made any improvement on the original, he's seriously mistaken.
If Andrew Lloyd Webber decides to make a musical sequel based on this novel, I predict it'll fail faster than "Rags" did (although "Rags" was actually good, and this wouldn't be anything approaching good or even decent).

Wonderfull follow up.......2006-09-19
I never thought I could enjoy a follow up as much as I did this one. I was always intrigued to find what happened to The Phantom of the Opera since he dissapeared. Well now I know. To tell you how good I found it...I read it (completelly) on a plane trip from Amsterdam to Miami!!!! Did not sleep at all !!
I love the theater and therefore I think that is one of the main reasons why I loved this book
A must read!
Good as a stand alone book, but not as a sequel..........2006-04-27
While the notion for this book is an interesting idea, it looses all of the mystery and romance that was evident in the original novel. Carrying off where The Phantom of the Opera left off, Christine is now married to Raoul and has a son named Pierre. The Phantom has come to New York where he is quickly amasssing a fortune in the stock market and other business ventures with his cold-blooded partner, Darius. Told from various points of views, similar to the original novel, the book first digresses from the original novel when a section is told from the Phantom's point of view. At that moment the mystery of Erik is dissipated. There is almost no suspense. The author chooses to insert a strange money-god that Darius serves and the conflict between him and the Irish priest that tutors Pierre is a distracting side note. There are some plot twists, and a surprising ending. However I find the ending hard to believe and I was disappointed. I don't know what I expected, but this novel had none of the spark of the original. It's a quick and somewhat entertaining read, but in order to enjoy it detach it from any notions of The Phantom of the Opera.

Average.......2007-06-21
I picked this book up due to the online line reviews and I was somewhat disappointed. The main characters were good but I think the action was very slow due to the fact that the author had some many volumes in mind for the series. Overall I didn't dislike the book but I would not really suggest it to a friend and it didn't interest me enough to buy any of the sequels.
An Epic tale that will surely please.......2007-04-01
I haven't finished the series yet but so far I have loved all the books up to book four. That is where I left off and have just ordered the remainder of the seven book series. King's Dragon is a rich tale with great characters. I would recommend this series highly. I have read and reread the first four books and they never fail to please.
Beautiful Series.......2007-02-19
Kate Elliott creates a complex world filled with strange creatures, forbidden love, politics, corruption, and everything needed to make a strong science fiction novel. The storyline is complex, and each book needs to be read right after the preceding one, but it is well worth all 7 books. By far one of the best series I have ever read in my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves tales with dragons and strange creatures. Bravo Kate, these books in the Crown of Stars are intelligent and amazing.
Elliot is a mesmerizing writer.......2006-11-17
Even when I was gnashing my teeth in frustration at the slow development of the plot, I kept reading because the characters are so finely drawn that it was impossible not to keep reading. I was familiar with Elliott's writing from her previous series BOOKS OF THE JARAN, and knew that no matter if it seemed like a digression, there would be a reason for the sidebars. It is entirely possible that much of the plot will not come together until volume five of the saga. In the meantime, I was fascinated by Alain, Liath, & Sanglant(I think they are the major main protagonists, but there could be more); even the Eika and Sabella with her tame sorceress, Biscop Antonia were fascinating. (I'm sure Frater Hugh, now Abbot Hugh, will turn up again in the pantheon of villians).I have PRINCE OF DOGS (vol 2) and am ready to see what the next step will be.
Hard to explain!.......2006-08-13
Where to start.....I have a hard time describing this book, It is so involved and I can't even say if I love it or hate it, but I couldn't put it down either! I think I kept reading it because I wanted so much for something good to happen to the main characters. I kept thinking "she has to get out of this situation!" Finally after three fourths of the book it does. Then I start waiting for her to get some courage and stop acting like a beat down puppy. But instead of getting frustrated with the book and giving up on it I keep reading! Why? Iam not sure! I must like something about it because I couldn't put it down I'm just not sure what that something is yet!

Great!.......2000-06-11
a great book about the Emperor's hatchlings and Toma's sudden reappearances (although he was really there all along) and evil plots. Kyl, the heir to the Dragon throne, travels to Talak and Penacles to visit the rulers before his coronation, accompanied by the power behind the throne- his brother Grath,Drakhorse, and his mentor Benjin Traske. Interesting things happen while they are there- an assasination attempt that ends up killing Toos, a ceremony in the crypts of Talak. When they return, they are taken prisoner by none other than the infamous and powerful Duke Toma at the Manor. It all finishes in Kivan Grath, where a battle to the death between Toma and Cabe has a somewhat tragic ending. But I cried in Godzilla. Toma has always been a favorite of mine- the drake you love to hate. A must for all Knaak fans!
Customer Reviews:
It's a book. No, it's a game!.......2005-10-26
This is volume 9 in a set of books produced by TSR as one of their many, many innovative efforts to keep their RPG (Role Playing Game) ball rolling.
Anyone familiar with the Choose your Own Adventure books will recognize the basic format. Every page or two, the book gives you some sort of choice, and you flip to a different section of the book based on what decision you make. Because different readers make different choices, the book can provide a whole host of stories based on the interaction.
These Adventure Gamebooks go one step further (and write the prose a bit better). In this book, you not only make decisions, but you also roll dice to determine the outcome of the things you attempt to do. In the beginning, your dice rolls give the main character different attributes (such as great strength, or great wisdom, for example), and the character's scores in these areas might facilitate dealing with a problem that crops up in the book.
One appeal of this type of book is that, for gaming geeks, it can be difficult to get a game going, requiring as it does many hours of participation from several people. Adventure Gamebooks represent a chance to scratch that RPG itch without needing a friend to play with.
This particular book is the second in a trilogy within the series, which marks another improvement over the Choose Your Own Adventure books. The Kingdom of Sorcery trilogy follows the adventures of Carr Delling. It's more fun than some of the other books in the series because there is a broad array of spells that can be cast, which adds some flavor.
I'd recommend these books to the person who has enjoyed the D&D or Choose Your Own Adventure experience. They're a neat idea, even if they never really took off.

I feel quiet, at peace, people say they've seen a change in me. I highly recommend this book. Give it a try, I think you'll like it too.
Amazing.......2003-10-25
I've just begun reading this book. I'm only in the beginning of the book, and already it's made a major difference on my life. I've been a cronic one to always reflect on the past. Reading this book, Chapter 1, talks about 'living in the moment' I never looked at life that way. Since reading this section, my life has become calm. I just can't put the book down. I've ordered the book for a friend who is also going through a hard time. I hope it helps them as much as it has helped me.
