Book Description
To Philadelphia lawyer Grace Rossi, who's starting over after a divorce, a part-time job with a federal appeals court sounds perfect. But Grace doesn't count on being assigned to an explosive death penalty appeal. Nor does she expect ardor in the court, in the form of an affair with her boss, Chief Judge Armen Gregorian. Then the truly unimaginable happens, and Grace finds herself investigating a murder.
As Grace searches for the truth, she unearths a six-figure bank account kept by a judge with an alias; breaks into another judge's chambers; and follows a trail of bribery and judicial corruption that's stumped even the FBI.
In no time at all, Grace under fire takes on a whole new meaning.

Customer Reviews:
Another great book from Lisa.......2007-02-04
I have ready many of Ms. Scottoline's novels and have found all of them to be worth my time. This one was faced pace and had a couple turns I did not see coming. Highly recomend.
Death of a judge.......2006-10-06
Grace Rossi is a single mother who is a parttime lawyer for a federal appeals court. Much to her dismay, she is assigned a murder case but things improve when Grace's researching the case leads to romance. After a romantic evening, Grace is horrified to discover that her lover has died of an apparent suicide. She discovers that he had had an active love life and she immediately suspects his wife of murdering him. This is the fourth Lisa Scottoline book I have read and is probably the weakest one so far. Most of the action and suspense are contained in the first few chapters, and the book begins to meander and lose focus after that.
"Final Appeal" Should Be Reversed and Remanded.......2005-09-05
After reading and enjoying "Everywhere That Mary Went," Lisa Scottoline's first mystery novel, I was disappointed in this effort. Although the main character is sufficiently developed and the story will be of interest to those familiar with Philadelphia, the plot itself -- the cornerstone of any mystery novel -- is fair at best. The various clues seem contrived. There are fewer of the clever observations which permeated "Mary". Worst of all, the novel lacks the suspense which mystery readers crave: "whodunit" is reasonably predictable, and for obvious reasons.
I am surprised that this novel won an Edgar. It held my interest, but is nowhere near the novels of, say, Michael Connelly. It is a nice, quick beach read, but you can find many better novels in this genre.
Almost a 4.......2005-09-01
I found this book entertaining to read, although the beginning was a little confusing. I just went back to read the first paragraph and it still doesn't really make sense to me - but after I got through the first chapter I was hooked. I didn't rate it a 4 because the author skipped ahead of herself, leaving what I felt was important details behind. Perhaps that was her intention and in a way it was refreshing because you couldn't get bogged down by details. The characters weren't terribly believable, yet they were likeable.
This is an easy read, so if you want something to just take your mind of the mundane of life, I would recommend you give this book a try.
I liked it enough to give another one of her books a try.
Why didn't I read the Amazon reader reviews first?.......2004-03-26
I learned long ago to skim through the Amazon reader reviews before I invest a weekend ( or a long rainy afternoon ) in an unknown ( to me ) author. But since my wife brought a paperback copy of "Final Appeal" home, and it WAS cold and raining outside, I took a chance. I now know that I should have walked over to the local library instead and started with one of Scottoline's later ( and presumed much, much better ) offerings. I suggest you do the same; pass this one by and get one of her later mysteries.

Book Description
Now, for the first time in hardcover,
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline's first two novels,
Everywhere That Mary Went and
Final Appeal, are available in one volume. A sure treat for Scottoline's legions of fans,
Lisa Scottoline: The First Two Novels is the ultimate collectible.
Everywhere That Mary Went introduces one of Lisa Scottoline's most beloved characters, fledglinglawyer Mary DiNunzio, who uses her wit -- and her heart -- to catch a killer. Mary's been trying to make partner in her cutthroat Philadelphia law firm, so she's too busy to worry about crank phone calls she's been getting, until they fall into a sinister pattern. Soon she can't shake the sensation that someone is watching her, following her every move. The shadow-boxing turns deadly when her worst fears are realized, and Mary has to fight for something a lot more important than partnership -- her life.
Final Appeal, winner of the Edgar Award, features law clerk and single mother Grace Rossi. Starting over after a divorce, Grace takes on a part-time job with a federal appeals court judge, but she doesn't count on being assigned to an explosive death-penalty appeal. Nor does she expect ardor in the court, in the form of an affair with her boss, Chief Judge Armen Gregorian. Then the truly unimaginable happens, and Grace finds herself investigating a murder. She searches for the truth, unearthing a six-figure bank account kept by a judge with an alias and following a trail of bribery and corruption. In no time at all, Grace under fire takes on a whole new meaning.

If there were 10 stars, that's what I'd give all Lisa's books!.......2007-02-07
This gal will make you laugh out loud whether you're listening to one of her books or reading it. She's got a great banter with the characters and the Italian influence (if you are Italian or know Italians) is so great and so right on! Every book of Lisa's that I've read (and that's nearly all of them) has been just a terrific enjoyable ride. She's superb and on the level of Susan Isaacs whom I consider another great author. Take the time to research the books in order and read them that way. The female characters are just simply dynOmite! You'll love every one of them and the books take twists you'd never expect. Excellent mysteries and the all girl law firm is wonderful.
Barbara Rosenblat reads all of Lisa's books and she is such a skilled narrator...you've just got to listen to at least one on tape. I don't know how Lisa chose her, but she's a total delight and makes the books even more enjoyable!

FINAL APPEAL is a wonderful blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense, romance, and humor. Joanne Fluke is in a league of her own.
GOOD NEWS: Ms. Fluke's latest mystery, the first in a series, THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER, will be published in April 2000.
Ms. Fluke writes contemporary romances as Gina Jackson and Regency romances as Kathryn Kirkwood.

Book Description
Appeal courts--including the Supreme Court of Canada--rule on the most contentious issues facing Canadian society: abortion, Aboriginal land claims, gay rights.
The authors of this book have conducted extensive research into the nature and function of appeal courts and here present their findings. This book outlines how appeal court judges make their decisions and how they defend them; the role played by judicial discretion; regional differences in appeal court operations; and the increasingly controversial role courts play in policymaking.
Final Appeal is a detailed analysis of the nature and operation of Canada's courts of appeal.

But sixteen months later Drummond is back on the streets, threatening Judy once more. And as Judy sets out to prove Drummond's guilt for the second time, Detective Chief Inspector Lloyd is called to a horrifying scene. It appears Colin Drummond has struck again. . . .
Customer Reviews:
The Best in the Series!.......2003-03-27
McGown keeps on getting better and better with each new installment in the Lloyd/Judy series. Her character development for her key characters is very good (along the lines of Elizabeth George). She does a really good job with the new characters in each story too. This book keeps you guessing until the very end, and like all good British procedurals, has two or three story strands that come together at the end. In this case there is a freed rapist that got out of jail on a technacality and we know it won't be long before he rapes again. There is a very likeable pimp that appears to be doing some double-dealings, a murder and there is a string of burglaries. We have more suspects for the rapes and burglaries than we know what to do with - and lo and behold - one of the suspects (for the murder) is Judy herself. Judy and Lloyd's relationship advances to another level in this book, and it's probably about time too. Also, they get a new boss who appears to be caught in a sexist timewarp. Very good stuff!
brilliant story - a must have.......1999-10-15
At first I wasn't sure, whether I liked this book or not, because it started of in a way that is rather untypical for Jill McGown. Having a little knowledge of the English legal sector myself, I found the court scenes convincing but wanted McGown to go on, to get to the real story. Well, I can only say that this is clearly one of the best books by Jill McGown. You won't be able to guess who committed the crimes and McGwon is fantastic when it comes to portraying different characters. Chief Inspector Lloyd and Judy Hill have become close friends of mine. A must have.
A very good English police procedural.......1997-05-14
In East Midlands, the Stealth Bomber has raped four women. Detective Inspector Judy Hill believes that the police have finally caught the culprit, Colin Arthur Drummond, who confesses to Judy that he committed the crimes. Beyond the confession, the case appears to still be open and shut. There is DNA evidence linking Colin to the victims and two witnesses have fingered Drummond as the rapist. So why is Drummond wandering the streets a free man eighteen months later and Hill under police suspicion? ...... Colin starts to follow Judy as he hints that she will be his next victim. He also stalks some of his previous victims. Adding to Judy's concern is that the internal affairs folks have launched their own investigatio n on the original mishandling of the Drummond case by the police with Hill being their intended target. Only her lover and superior, Inspector Lloyd believes Judy handled things above board in accordance with acceptable police procedures. With an obvious rapist on the loose and on her back, and her own peers openly accusing her of error, what's a police officer to do? For Judy the answer is simple: stop Drummond from succeeding with h is next rape whose target appears to be Judy Hill, a police officer under siege from all sides but still determined to see justice served. ...... VERDICT UNSAFE is a very good English police procedural that is the eighth Lloyd and Hill mystery novel. Judy is a superb professional, whose exploits are always fun to read. Readers need to bear with this book becau se it starts a bit slow, but when it takes off, it rockets. Jill McGown provides her audience with a complex and interesting novel that is a great addition to a fantastic series. ......Harriet Klausner

Book Description
In the tradition of Philippa Gregory's smart, transporting fiction comes this tale of two independent, spirited sisters. Bright and inquisitive, Hannah Powers was raised by a father who treated her as if she were his son. While her beautiful and reckless sister, May, pushes the limits of propriety in their small English town, Hannah harbors her own secret: their father has trained her in the physician's art, an education forbidden to women. But Hannah's secret serves her well when she journeys to colonial Maryland to reunite with May, who has been married off to a distant cousin after a series of sexual misadventures had ruined her marriage prospects in England. As Hannah searches for May, who has disappeared, she finds herself falling in love with her brother-in-law, even as she struggles to believe his claim that her sister died in childbirth. Alone in a wild, uncultivated land where the old rules no longer apply, Hannah is freed from the constraints of the society that judged both her and May and found them dangeroustoo smart, too fearless, and too hungry for life. But Hannah is also plagued by doubt, as her quest for answers to May's fate grows ever more disturbing and tangled. The Vanishing Point is a marvelously assured period piece. Sharratt's ten years of research on everything from seventeenth-century pharmacology to pioneer cooking are evident on each page. In this gripping, evocative novel, rich in texture and authenticity, Sharratt brings to vivid life a distant world that feels as immediate and relevant as our own.
Customer Reviews:
compelling story, exquisite literary writing.......2007-06-23
I got very little sleep until I finished this compelling story of two sisters in colonial America. One is supposedly dead of childbirth, and the other who comes from England in search of her (and who is a brilliant young doctor who can't practice because of her sex) stumbles into the bleak homestead where her sister's handsome young widower is living alone with his terrible memories, and falls in love with him. Still, the ghost of what really may have happened to her sister haunts her.
The author is a truly literary historical novelist, a rare and wonderful thing.
Stephanie Cowell, author of MARRYING MOZART (Penguin)
Intrigued for days after........2007-06-10
I didn't want to put the book down. I continued thinking about the characters after I was done and even found myself angry with some of them. It was a well written historical fiction. In the beginning it flows nicely and fills you in on the characters, half way through the book I started to be more than connected to the characters I understood their feelings. The ending was stunning, not at all what I expected, there were so many turns and twists. The ending was the BEST part! I suggested it to a co worker she too was stunned by the ending and simply told me she didn't see it coming.
Good book, I would suggest it.
Delightful and sinister, it's a fun read! .......2007-06-05
Toss this one into your beach bag, but remember to bring along some sunscreen! You will not be able to pack up and leave until you finish this intriguing and delicious book. The mystery is good, the characters are interesting and likable, and the love story is tingly!
Heart-pounding and sexy historical fiction.......2007-04-10
From its early images of forbidden female sexuality to the torments of agrarian life in colonial Maryland, I found The Vanishing Point to be a gripping read. Beautifully textured, extraordinarily researched and deeply insightful of the constraints and ingenuity of young rebellious women of the era, both in the Old World and the New. Strongly recommended for young women readers, as well as those intrigued by conditions for women in early American history.
A So So Read.......2007-03-24
Recently having gotten into historical fiction, I picked up The Vanishing Point. While not bad (it was written well), it moved a little slow for me. There were points where I was interested to see what was going to happen and if in fact Hannah's suspicions were correct. For the most part, however, I read the book to finish and to move on to the next one. I didn't quite like the going back and forth between characters and time period. I'm not going to recommend or not. Other reviewers seem to love it. This was just my personal feeling about the book.

Book Description
"Does the paper give any description of the missing man, sir?" I asked.
"Yes; quite an exhaustive description. Indeed, it is exhaustive to the verge of impropriety, considering that the man may possibly turn up alive and well at any moment. It seems that he has an old Pott's fracture of the left ankle, a linear, longitudinal scar on each knee -- origin not stated, but easily guessed at -- and that he has tattooed on his chest in vermilion a very finely and distinctly executed representation of the symbolical Eye of Osiris -- or Horus or Ra, as the different authorities have it. There certainly ought to be no difficulty in identifying the body. But we will hope that it won't come to that. . . ."

Freeman: One of the Best Mystery Writers Ever.......2007-02-04
I am 100% a fan of R. Austin Freeman,s mysteries. He wrote
mysteries at a time at beginning of 1900's when some of the
best mysteries were ever written. His mysteries are getting very hard to find and I won't rest until I have read all of them. His main character,
Dr. Thorndyke is a brilliant scientist and lawyer who eventually
solves the crimes.

WHITAKER IS A QUACK! .......2007-10-09
Dr. Whitaker is nothing but a quack! My mother has been following his regimen for years to help treat her rhuematoid arthritis and other ailments, but we discovered that the vitamins that he produces are dangerous! My mother took a daily dose (her first one) of the vision-helping vitamins and proceeding to throw up blood for several hours! I don't know who this guy thinks he is, but he is certainly not one to be trusted!

while I have not read the book, I do subscribe to his newsletters for $80 a year. I wonder if most or all of the same info. is in the book as the newsletters. In the newsletters he tells you to buy his vitamins and herbs with a strange name, from his store, at elevated prices such as nicain which he names Niasafe and charges a lot more than regular niacin at the drug store or vitamin store. He never mentions regular brand names of supplements that are probably totally acceptable and a lot cheaper. so while I have not read the book, the info. in the newsletters is ok but there is a lot of info. that I know about that he never mentioned. If I have to subscribe for another year to get more info. that I have not yet gotten, I wonder if it is in this book.
How to get and stay healthy and live longer........2002-08-31
The view of orthodox medicine is that one is well if one is not overtly sick. However, in truth, most Americans who are not overtly sick are not really healthy -- they're just not overtly sick for the time being. Over the past few decades a new paradigm has developed whose goal is the prevention of disease and the achievement of true health, as well the extension of lifespan with minimal symptoms of aging. This new paradigm -- which has been shown conclusively to work -- is called "alternative" or "holistic" medicine. Dr. Julian Whitaker is one of the leading experts of this new paradigm of health. In this book he explains in simple terms how you can get and stay healthy and live a long healthy life by (1) eating a genuinely healthy diet (not the government's overly simplistic food pyramid), and taking certain nutritional supplements, (2) getting moderate (but regular) excercise, and (3) weaning one's self from most pharmaceutical drugs (most of which has harmful side effects) which truly healthy people rarely need. Sadly, Dr. Whitaker's prescription for health has not yet won over most othodox physicians but it is supported by thousands of scientific studies and has been experienced by hundreds of thousands of people who have had the courage to try it. I can't recommend this book too highly.
A great reference and health guide from top to bottom.......1999-07-19
great non-traditional remedies that have worked for my family and I. I would categorize the book as being in between naturopathy and traditional medicine. This book will make you question (but not distrust) the medical society and its ingrained, tunnel visioned methods. An overall long term health and maintenance guide. Categorized by ailments makes for easy reference. I highly recommend this book for everyone.
