With Drop City, T. Coraghessan Boyle offers proof that he has become one of America's most prolific, gifted storytellers. Set in the 1970s, Boyle entertains readers with the denizens of "Drop City," a counterculture California commune that welcomes anyone wanting to live off the grid, use drugs, and practice free love. Boyle sublimely captures the sociology of its rebellious members, who doubt the sincerity or beliefs of newcomers, express some insecurity about nonconformity, and chastise outsiders while remaining oblivious to their own hypocrisy. Marco, Pan, Star, and other "cats" and "chicks" live hassle-free until dissention and cries of racism mount amid increasing run-ins with the local government (a young girl is raped, installation of a sewage system is mandated, a mother lets her toddlers drink LSD-laced juice). Seeking refuge, the citizens move north, to Alaska, to reinvent their utopia, but soon learn the natural environment is more unforgiving of a lackadaisical lifestyle.

Drop City is funny, evocative, and well-paced, shifting between the hippies and the Alaskan locals--primarily Sess and his new bride Pamela (a city dweller who arranged stays with several trappers over a few weeks to determine whom she would marry)--until the two cultures collide. Balanced between plot and character, Boyle excels at describing the physical world and his characters' interaction with it, whether portraying the harshness (or sheer beauty) of the Alaskan wilderness, the simple survival routines of its grizzled inhabitants, or the sounds wafting through Drop City: "the goats bleating to be milked or fed, the single sharp ringing note of a dog surprised by its own hunger, the regular slap of the screen door at the back of the house--and underneath it all, like the soundtrack to a movie, the dull hum of rock and roll leaking out the kitchen windows." Truly American in spirit, Drop City is a strong novel of freedom and those in pursuit of lives of liberty. --Michael Ferch

Book Description

It is 1970, and a down-at-the-heels California commune devoted to peace, free love, and the simple life has decided to relocate to the last frontier—the unforgiving landscape of interior Alaska—in the ultimate expression of going back to the land. Armed with the spirit of adventure and naïve optimism, the inhabitants of “Drop City” arrive in the wilderness of Alaska only to find their utopia already populated by other young homesteaders. When the two communities collide, unexpected friendships and dangerous enmities are born as everyone struggles with the bare essentials of life: love, nourishment, and a roof over one's head. Rich, allusive, and unsentimental, T.C. Boyle's ninth novel is a tour de force infused with the lyricism and take-no-prisoners storytelling for which he is justly famous.

5 out of 5 stars My first Boyle.......2007-04-12

Wow. What an author. Boyle's characters are compelling, diverse, real, full and believable. The story captures the landscape very well, populated with nature and humans. The story is engrossing and entertaining while still containing beautiful examples of good writing. Boyle never falls into writing in cliches and his similes and metaphors are imaginative and unique. One of the best novels I've read all year.

1 out of 5 stars Totally, like, boring and worthless.......2006-09-27

Maybe if you were there and have fond memories of the drugged-out, young life of a hippie commune, you will relate to this book. Otherwise, you probably won't want to bother. It's hard to care much about the characters who are mainly spaced out on dope, groping for instant gratification, and don't give a hoot about much of anything else. If this was "fun", I'm afraid I miss the point.

4 out of 5 stars Got it right , fun page turner -- ending strangely anti-climatic .......2006-09-17

This book is a page turner but I was completely mystified by the ending, which had a tv-sitcom hoaky ending ala the Return of the Jedi, with everyone including the ghosts staring at the camera happy, with only one of the cartoony 'bad guys' of the commune killed off as the sacrificial lamb. I don't think in reality they would have gotten off that easy as lazy and reality-resistant as they had been written. And while the little town of Boynton didn't like them, the volatility of the situation (human and nature) was left surprisingly unexplored.

As a literal child in the 60s and 70s living in Hawaii I watched as the hippies deluged Maui on the same quest and recognized the characters and commune dynamics immediately -- what a great job! To Boyle's credit, I wanted to know a lot more at the end, like a flash forward in five years or more to what happened to them. Hippies, as it was noted a few times in the book, could be the ultimates at attempting to extend childhood magical thinking into adulthood. It was a pioneering time and there are always going to be major losses and discoveries along the way. But did we find any real answers out of that era? Sounds like another interesting book. Maybe a sequal Mr. Boyle?

As for the reviewer that said movies couldn't be rented from the library in the 1970, yes they definately could as my best friend and I enjoyed them all the time during that era. They were actual 8mm films and you needed a projector and screen! :)

5 out of 5 stars fun.......2006-06-18

As a (still) 20-something, I find it amusuing that many of the Amazon reviewers critize this book because it doesn't portray the 1960 culture they participated in or remember. Who cares???

I found this book to be hugely interesting, entertaining, and fun. I was totally taken in by the characters. T.C. Boyle is a great writer who realistically portrayed two widely disparate cultures and brought them together in an absolutely remarkable and unforgettable yet totally believable situation. I absolutely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb novel.......2006-05-30

This is the best novel about the back-to-the-land communal movement of the 1960s, bar none. In fact, it's one of the best novels of the last decade or so. Don't miss it!

    Book Description

Memories of Drop City follows a group of people and their radical movement, in the Southwest and on both coasts, in a decade that shaped the rest of the century.

"John Curl's characters in Memories of Drop City aspire to be '100 years' ahead of the rest of us, but Curl shows, through his highly crafted and brilliant novelistic memoir, that they often succumb to the same social flaws as the rest of us. This might be the most balanced memoir or novel yet published about the Sixties."

Ishmael Reed, National Book Award nominee

"With this compelling evocation and portrayal of breathing people, John Curl unpacks the boxed lunch myth of America's alternative lifestyle Sixties, and restores the day to day flavor of a deeply fabled era still key to understanding the way we live (and don't live) now."

Al Young, poet laureate of California

"Memories of Drop City is an extraordinary book which brings the Sixties back to life in vivid detail and conveys the spirit of the Sixties better than almost anything else I've read."

Gerald Nicosia, author of Memory Babe

"Memories of Drop City brings vibrantly to light the flower children who returned to the land seeking peace and by that act were committing revolution. John Curl captures the idealism of a generation and their demonstrations against war in a revolution with a smile.."

          Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "glace, candied, and crystallized fruits, fruit peels, nuts, marshmallow cream, cough drops excluding pharmaceutical type, and other confectionery-type products" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

Freddie, Fireman Mike continues the Freddie stories. Fireman Mike visits Freddie's school and befriends Freddie. Freddie feels safe knowing that Fireman Mike is there to protect the city. But, Freddie's sense of security is shattered when he hears that Fireman Mike has died in the line of duty. With his mother's help, Freddie is able to deal with his feeling of loss and the tragedy that is 9/11. Freddie, Fireman Mike explains to young readers that there are still, and always will be, good and caring people in the world.

Freddie, Fireman Mike was written as a tribute to the brave men and women: firefighters, police officers, and paramedics who lost their lives on 9/11. It takes a look a serious and freighting subject. Freddie, Fireman Mike, gently helps young readers understand and cope with the strong emotions that result from the loss of a loved one and the fear and confusion that are caused by the senseless act of terrorism.

                    Book Description

“This is the best book I've read about the recent changes in Times Square and what they mean.” —Luc Sante, author of Low Life

During the 1990s, Times Square changed its colors, from a notoriously seedy urban center to a family-friendly, corporate-sponsored entertainment district. Whether this was a renaissance or a loss of soul, a dream fulfilled or just another urban nightmare, the transformation of America’s best-known intersection illuminates conflicts occurring in U.S. cities nationwide—between pleasure and moralism, participation and exclusion, global connectedness and local roots.

A street-level portrait of Times Square's people, Daniel Makagon’s work includes artfully rendered interviews, dialogues, and reflections. Where the Ball Drops reveals an ongoing urban drama that thrives on the contradictions of public and private life, on individual desires for belonging and anonymity, and on a sense of place and placelessness. It is one of the most complete, nuanced, and ultimately convincing accounts to date of the changes wrought by contemporary urban revitalization.

“Daniel Makagon presents a skilful ethnographic interpretation of how ‘competing fantasies about the meaning and material reality of Times Square, which are advanced through various rhetoric visions, are affirmed, challenged, and, at times, undermined by the practices of everyday life.’” —Cultural Studies

Daniel Makagon is assistant professor of communication at DePaul University.

I was so delighted when I found this series. I don't normally pick mysteries, but am an avid dog-lover.
I do not agree that Melanie "...wear(s) on your nerves because she is so obstinate about EVERYTHING." She's tough; she's had to be, as most single parents do. She's also had a lot of change in her life just in the year that's taken place in the books.
This series, and author, are on my favorites list.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good but.............2002-10-28

All of Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis mysteries are entertaining and I've read most of them. My only objection is that Melanie Travis begins to wear on your nerves because she is so obstinate about EVERYTHING. There isn't just a few things she is hard headed about but everytime she comes up against something, she braces her feet. She is stubborn about her dog, her son, her job, her ex, Sam, her aunts and the list goes on. This becomes not only predictable but very boring. Melanie needs to become somewhat flexible and leave some of the pig headedness behind to make these books not only entertaining but more believable. Ms Berenson does an excellent job of transporting you to the dog show world, it's just that sometimes I wish she'd leave Melanie at home to grow up!

3 out of 5 stars Hardly an underdog.......2000-12-04

Melanie Travis appears to have learned quite a bit about the dog show world in between Pedigree and this second Berenson novel. In Underdog we find Melanie is a Poodle owner now, grooming her puppy for the big time, yet still unable to avoid trouble.

It happens when a dog trainer and friend of Melanie's dies suddenly from what appears to be natural causes. Melanie, however, refuses to let sleeping dogs lie (I have GOT to stop it with these dog puns) and returns once again to sleuth mode.

Like Pedigree, Underdog is a quick read; I would estimate a mystery fan could finish this book in 1-2 days. The story as a whole is quite good -- it will be interesting to see how the budding romance between Melanie and fellow dog owner Sam Driver plays out in future novels -- yet I must admit I had a good idea as to who the murderer was early in the story. Usually I'm not very adept at that, nevertheless I'll see if I can go two for three with the next Melanie Travis mystery.

I think Laurien Berenson did a GREAT job of writing this book.If you havent read it, it is excellent! At Amazon.com they areselling it, so if you want it quick, order it now! Anyway, I really loved this book, and it is great for people who like mysteries, and people who love animals (such as myself). I am only 12 and I love mysteries! My sister, who is 20 loves mysteries and when I gave this book to her to read, she read it in one night! She told me it was the best page-turner she had read in years! END

2 out of 5 stars Fairly good premise but mediocre execution........1999-06-12

As both a dog lover and mystery addict, I expected to like this book a lot more than I did. Unfortunately, I found the characters (aside from the narrator) and the tale a little thin. For example, the only way Berenson can fit Travis' son into the plot is to mention that he's whining for junk food, which happens all too often. With tighter writing (or editing - I'm not sure who's at fault here) and a few less transparent characters, this book would be really engaging. As it stands, however, it's only decent.

5 out of 5 stars Always look forward to the next one........1999-05-06

I've been a dog breeder/exhibitor for 30 yrs.so I know she has her facts together and it great to be able to relate to those aspects while also getting a good mystery.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for mystery and dog lovers alike!!!.......1998-07-12

As a new fancier of purebred dogs and a long time lover of good mystery writing...the Melanie Travis mystery series is wonderful. I can't remember the last time I have stayed up until dawn to finish a book. Ms. Berenson's writing is witty and lets you know what really goes on in and out of the "show dog ring". As far as mystery writing goes...Ms. Berenson gets my vote for BEST IN SHOW! I look forward to her next ventures!

Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... 5 out of 5 stars The Best ( USA ) Ski Travel Book You Can Find.......2007-01-15

This book by far surpasses excellent. If you are planning a ski trip and are interested in going somewhere new this book seems to have it all. It lists every major ski area in the United States. Every ski resort mentioned is chronicaled by state and gives you area and mountain facts and most have their trail map pictured as well. It also lists local airports, directions from most areas to the ski resort as well as lodging suggestions. I could go on and on about the other little tidbits within the publication but you'll just have to read it yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Ski North America.......2007-01-09

Very informative but dated. The lift ticket prices listed are significantly below the actual rate in some cases (i.e. Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Moutain). They should be updated.

5 out of 5 stars If you know what it means to wait for snow.......2004-07-20

Being new to the States as well as a crazy skier I spent hours on the net trying to collect information about different resorts. This book is the first, and so far the only book, that gives very detailed, professional overview while providing non-biased information about resorts. I visited many resorts in the States in the last 2 years and compared my impressions with the reviews in the book - you can relay on the book! Great advantage of this edition is a an amount of illustrations such as aerial photos, maps of the area, etc. I wish there will be similar book about skiing in Europe.
On the down side I would expect more info about resorts on the NE (for example, my favorite Whiteface is not included).

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANY SKIER OR SNOWBOARDER.......2004-01-15

David Holyoak's Ski North America Guide is first class. Nothing like this has been published before. This stocky, well-illustrated guide to all the significant North American ski resorts contains intelligent, un-flowery text and good practical advice. A must for any skier or snowboarder seeking the reality behind the American dream, I wish I'd written it myself.
