All the best thrillers contain the solution to a mystery, and the mystery in this intellectually sparkling scientific thriller is more crucial and stranger than most. Why are people turning against their neighbors and their newborn children? And what is causing an epidemic of still births? A disgraced paleontologist and a genetic engineer both come across evidence of cover-ups in which the government is clearly up to no good. But no one knows what's really going on, and the government is covering up because that is what, in thrillers as in life, governments do. And what has any of this to do with the discovery of a Neanderthal family whose mummified faces show signs of a strange peeling?

Greg Bear has spent much of his recent career evoking awe in the deep reaches of space, but he made his name with Blood Music, a novel of nanotechnology that crackled with intelligence. His new book is a workout for the mind and a stunning read; human malignancy has its role in his thriller plot, but its real villain, as well as its last best hope, is the endless ingenious cruelty of the natural world and evolution. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

A 2000 HUGO AWARD NOMINEE

Ancient diseases encoded in the DNA of humans wait like sleeping dragons to wake and infect again--or so molecular biologist Kaye Lang believes. And now it looks as if her controversial theory is in fact chilling reality. For Christopher Dicken, a "virus hunter" at the Epidemic Intelligence Service, has pursued an elusive flu-like disease that strikes down expectant mothers and their offspring. Then a major discovery high in the Alps --the preserved bodies of a prehistoric family--reveals a shocking link: something that has slept in our genes for millions of years is waking up.

Now, as the outbreak of this terrifying disease threatens to become a deadly epidemic, Dicken and Lang must race against time to assemble the pieces of a puzzle only they are equipped to solve--an evolutionary puzzle that will determine the future of the human race . . . if a future exists at all.

Greg Bear's powerfully written, brilliantly inventive novels combine cutting-edge science and unforgettable characters, illuminating dazzling new technologies -- and their dangers.

Now, in Darwin's Radio, Bear draws on state-of-the-art biological and anthropological research to give us an ingeniously plotted thriller that questions everything we believe about human origins and destiny -- as civilization confronts the next terrifying step in evolution.

A mass grave in Russia that conceals the mummified remains of two women, both with child -- and the conspiracy to keep it secret... a major discovery high in the Alps: the preserved bodies of a prehistoric family -- the newborn infant possessing disturbing characteristics... a mysterious disease that strikes only pregnant women, resulting in miscarriage. Three disparate facts that will converge into one science-shattering truth.

Molecular biologist Kaye Lang, a specialist in retroviruses, believes that ancient diseases encoded in the DNA of humans can again come to life. But her theory soon becomes chilling reality. For Christopher Dicken -- a "virus hunter" at the Epidemic Intelligence Service -- has pursued an elusive flu-like disease that strikes down expectant mothers and their offspring. The shocking link: something that has slept in our genes for millions of years is waking up.

Now, as the outbreak of this terrifying disease threatens to become a deadly epidemic, Dicken and Lang, along with anthropologist Mitch Rafelson, must race against time to assemble the pieces of a puzzle only they are equipped to solve. An evolutionary puzzle that will determine the future of the human race... if a future exists at all.

A fiercely intelligent, utterly enthralling novel of adventure and ideas, genetics and evolution, a fast-paced thriller that is grounded in the timeless human themes of struggle, loss, and redemption.

3 out of 5 stars The Evolution of Dialogue.......2007-09-18

Evolution is a very intriguing topic to me. I am fascinated with it, I am absorbed by nostalgia. When I came across this book the cover sold me into peering at its summary. From there I decided to purchase it. With such a book, which should have been common sense, you cannot neglect the over abundance of dialogue.

There is no action sequences and very little surprises in the book and it is consumed by dialogue. Characters ramble on in less than interesting conversations. The plot itself is not astounding. However, the author does do a very good job in his character development and conveyance. You truly get a feel for the characters personalities and feelings. This is truly the only intricate part of the book.Nonetheless, the book offers a mediocre story line that most definitely did not deserve a sequel.

The book itself has lead me into further non-fiction reading of ERV, genes, cells and in-depth evolution. That is the only reason it got a third star, because without having read this book I would not be researching the exact topics that affect evolution today.

I do not recommend you to read the sequel because it will take you to the same place....nowhere.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

The earlier part of the book is the most interesting, with the investigation, and the parts in Georgia, and phage science, among other things.

Interesting, but not outstanding. The latter new child family oriented stuff drags a bit. The relationship and actions between the two main adult characters and parents doesn't necessarily ring true either, I think.

3 out of 5 stars O noes! Save the babies!.......2007-08-02

This novel started off great. Neanderthal bodies found in a remote cave with a human infant. How did they die? What can science tell us? Then the story goes off the deep end with this weird virus that is spreading throughout the country causing women to abort their babies. As if this is not horrible enough, a government task force is developed whose primary goal is to contain the situation even if it means spreading misinformation. Men are blamed, women are persecuted and humanity seems at the brink of extinction.

I really liked the story in this novel but I loathed the main characters. Mitch was an arrogant fool and Kay blisteringly naive. Very sappy. Their romance in the face of the spreading disaster seemed selfish and tacky to me. I disliked the over-focus on 'baby making.' Surely people with Mitch and Kay's talents would be better focused on helping convince the media of their beliefs than running around trying to procreate. I felt the story really jumped the shark when the Native Americans show up in trucks to rescue Kay and Mitch from being put in an internment camp... Terribly corny and contrived.

This started off great, but soon became a sappy soapy and silly.

3 out of 5 stars An average book.......2007-07-21

I've read Bear's books before (Eon, Heritage) and although I was never quite satisfied with them, they held some promise. Seeing how a lot of people think "Darwin's Radio" is one of his finest, I decided to give it a try.

I stick to the same verdict. Quite promising, but disappointing. Characters are flat, plot is over-stretched.

The only good part about the book is the basic science of endogenous retroviruses. Bear did his research and it shows. He can also explain it in terms that are understandable to general public. Yet he fails where it matters most - in justifying the reasons and mechanisms for quick evolutionary change. From his descriptions it seems that he lacks even basic understanding of how evolution works. And since the whole book is dedicated to the idea of rapid evolutionary jumps, the book falls flat and all that research is wasted. Without the science this book has nothing to offer.

5 out of 5 stars "sci-fi" wielded as "suspense".......2007-05-03

Greg Bear, as many of us know, is a sci-fi and fantasy writer. I buy his books (2nd hand, naturally) because I love to read his take of science the future (i.e. Eon and Anvil of Stars). Imagine my surprise when Darwin's Radio was being labeled as a "suspense" novel. Has he gone mass-market? Seeing books like Quantico and Dead Lines, I'm beginning to think I've lost the author I used to love.

This may very well be his last stab at a hard sci-fi book. And what a stab it was! The technical gooiness is a pleasure to wade through (extra kudos for the dictionary of terminology in the back). The plot is somewhat plausible, but nevertheless fantastic and deeply intriguing. The entire book gets solid points all across board, even for the bone-chilling ending. You may have to shake your head a few times and read the passage over again a few times to make sure you actually read right!

Darwin's Children, Greg Bear's follow-up to Darwin's Radio, is top-shelf science fiction, thrilling and intellectually charged. It's no standalone, though. The plot and characters are certainly independent of the previous novel, but the background in Darwin's Radio is essential to nonbiologists trying to understand what's going on. The next stage of human evolution has arrived, announced by the birth of bizarre "virus children." Now the children with the hypersenses and odd faces are growing up, and the world has to figure out what to do with them. The answer is evil and all too human, as governments put the kids in camps to protect regular folks from imagined dangers. Mitch and Kaye, scientists whose daughter Stella is swept up in the fray, become unwillingly involved in the politics that erupt around the issue of the new humans. Harrowing chases, gun battles, epidemics, and tense meetings about civil rights ensue, all brilliantly narrated. But just when you think you've got the book figured out, Bear throws a massive curveball by introducing... religion. That's right, a good old-fashioned epiphany, plopped down in the middle of a hard science fiction novel. But even skeptical readers will be swept along with Kaye as she tries to deal with what's happening to her and how it relates to the fate of her daughter's species. Keep reading past the words that make you uncomfortable--the hot science, the cool spirituality--and you'll be rewarded with a story of complete and moving humanity. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Greg Bear’s Nebula Award–winning novel, Darwin’s Radio, painted a chilling portrait of humankind on the threshold of a radical leap in evolution—one that would alter our species forever. Now Bear continues his provocative tale of the human race confronted by an uncertain future, where “survival of the fittest” takes on astonishing and controversial new dimensions.

DARWIN’S CHILDREN

Eleven years have passed since SHEVA, an ancient retrovirus, was discovered in human DNA—a retrovirus that caused mutations in the human genome and heralded the arrival of a new wave of genetically enhanced humans. Now these changed children have reached adolescence . . . and face a world that is outraged about their very existence. For these special youths, possessed of remarkable, advanced traits that mark a major turning point in human development, are also ticking time bombs harboring hosts of viruses that could exterminate the “old” human race.

Fear and hatred of the virus children have made them a persecuted underclass, quarantined by the government in special “schools,” targeted by federally sanctioned bounty hunters, and demonized by hysterical segments of the population. But pockets of resistance have sprung up among those opposed to treating the children like dangerous diseases—and who fear the worst if the government’s draconian measures are carried to their extreme.

Scientists Kaye Lang and Mitch Rafelson are part of this small but determined minority. Once at the forefront of the discovery and study of the SHEVA outbreak, they now live as virtual exiles in the Virginia suburbs with their daughter, Stella—a bright, inquisitive virus child who is quickly maturing, straining to break free of the protective world her parents have built around her, and eager to seek out others of her kind.

But for all their precautions, Kaye, Mitch, and Stella have not slipped below the government’s radar. The agencies fanatically devoted to segregating and controlling the new-breed children monitor their every move—watching and waiting for the opportunity to strike the next blow in their escalating war to preserve “humankind” at any cost.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Sequel to Darwin's Radio.......2007-10-01

Those who would only be happy with Faulkner clones need not bother reviewing this book. Clancy fans are more the audience, but how are they going to find out given a book labeled "science fiction?" Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children are about how real science and real scientists (policy wonks, politicians, etc.) actually are. And when he steps from science fact to science fiction, no one does it better, more creatively or more carefully.

And for those who don't get the epiphany counterpoint, shame on you. This is a book about the logical conclusion to the known facts and it's a book about the mystery- the mystery that science will never eradicate and religion is a mere shadow of: How and why we are here.

The author's final summing soliloquy about evolution in the grand scheme is a masterpiece that that can teach for centuries, long after his scientific suppositions are proven or disproven.

A book for those educated in science, and in life- not just in the arts.

Read both books, in order.

2 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Time.......2007-09-18

When you pick up the paperback do not be confused by "National Best Seller" lining the top. It only entitles Greg Bear as having been a "National Best Seller" not the book (a hint of sarcasim). Anyone who has read this would be completely aware that this book is not worthy of such a title and the public has proven that by it not getting there.

I struggled to finish reading this book and it was no different from the last. The only reason I chose to finish the series is because I started; so I was inclined to subject myself to more literary torture.

Nevertheless, Bear has conveyed an absolute astounding ability to create well developed and defined characters. The plot thickens a little but then slams you into the abyss of nothingness once again. His research for the books shows, which he did a good job, but the overall story just does not transport a reader to be content with having read this series.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing...........2007-08-08

This book was pretty average with a lot of weak points. It could been SOO much better with better characters. Kay and her loser husband Mitch were real downers in this one. Mitch (described attractively as possessing a unibrow), is not the man he once was. Marriage, and worries about his kid (stella nova) have made him a paranoid survivalist who works in politics. One scene in particular cemented my loathing of Mitch and it was the scene where his daughter is sick and Mitch and Kay fight. Mitch reproaches his wife and is put to bed and tucked in like a baby. I just lost all respect for him. For gods sake, they are in a crisis and he really needs to man up. Later when he wants to get back with his wife he pleads with her. I think they were better off not together. Together they were chokingly irritating.

Then there is Kay's 'God Encounters.' I have nothing against inspirational literature, but usually it is clearly labeled. I felt a bit sucker punched to read it out of the blue. Kay's rapturous devotion to an unknown entity which loves her completely and accepts everything she does... Where did that one come from? Then she decides to get an MRI to have herself scanned while under the influence of God? I just don't get it. Where did my sci-fi novel go?

The children were interesting, but I found it difficult to believe humans would lock their kids away like that, disease potential or not. After the Holocaust I'm pretty sure the Israelis wouldn't. Then there are all the other scientific organizations who would doubtless be studying the children and proving some of the CDC's claims weren't true. The children themselves were a bit too mary-sueish. A little too perfect. A little to inhuman.

Meh. I guess what rankles me most is I like the idea of this book. I like the world, I just found the characters a drag. About the only character I liked was Dicken. He did not spend time sitting around feeling sorry for himself.

Meh. 2 stars. Okay, but could've been so much more!!

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

The SHEVA children, with their super senses and different abilities and ways of relating are basically kept locked up in 'schools' apart from those whom their parents or others have helped stay free, doing what they can.

People are afraid of the diseases they could be carriers for.

Ultimately the resources of a few people aren't enough to stop the various authorities capturing the children and their parents, who are not exactly secret agents, in general. These post-humans/mutants must learn to get along in captivity, and do what they can to further their own ends, will frustrating those studying them as guinea pigs.

2 out of 5 stars Ultimately, I put it down.......2007-01-18

Maybe I could have enjoyed this book more if I'd read "Darwin's Radio" beforehand. As it was, the characters were unsympathetic, the plot too meandering, and the pace too slow. I also have a personal aversion to gratuitously scatological stories, and found Bear's needless references needlessly jarring. About 200 pages into the book, I put it down and moved on.

Ediciones B, thru its collection Nova is performing a great service to Spanish speaking sci-fi fans. Many new titles from top genre writers are being published. More so, some are printed in Argentina, making it easier and cheaper for us to buy them.

"Darwin's Radio" is the first novel I've read from Greg Bear. I am sci-fi fan yet usually those author defined as "hard sci-fi" ones are not my favorites. After reading reviews on this book I decided to give it a try.
Well I was delighted! The only "hard" stuff in the novel is Bear's excellent grip on bioscience (at least for layman as I am). He presents his background "facts" very plausibly, clear and by no means boring.

The story starts with several different lines and characters spread all over the world. They will converge and contribute to increase action momentum.
A dormant humankind feature is triggered by social stress and evolution is launched thru wild paths. How government, international organizations and individuals react to face this threat/opportunity is the core of the book.
Characters are well described with real motivations, interests and human depth. The reader may empathize deeply with some of them and ardently hate others, that's another Greg Bear's strong point.

It is a gripping and thought provoking tale. Do not miss this trip!

When the body of a young pregnant woman washes ashore on a stretch of barren beach at Boston Harbor, homicide detective Rocky Patel writes to FBI agent Poppy Rice for help in identifying the Jane Doe. The crime lab comes up empty, but a year and a half later an anonymous tip to the Boston PD reveals the woman to be the wayward daughter of a prominent Irish American political family. In a separate case, more than thirty years earlier, a pregnant woman's corpse had been discovered on the Irish island of Inishmore. A group of women secretly buried the body but saved a lock of the dead girl's hair, which is just now passed along to Poppy. She agrees to set up a DNA test, which soon confirms her gut feeling that the two drownings are somehow linked-and that foul play is involved. Teaming up with the inimitable Rocky, Poppy sets out in search of truth and justice and instead finds herself snared in a web of political deceit, family intrigue, and out-and-out bad guys. As always, she rises to the occasion.

Smith has done it again with this enchanting series. Poppy Rice is an enduring character whose sleuthing takes her this time to Ireland. The atmosphere is just right and the suspensefulness of the plot makes this a stay-up-til-four-in-the-morning-to-finish- it kind of read. Nuanced, sly, funny -- this is the best kind of thriller, one about which you can quite literally say: I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down. Bravo!

2 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as I hoped it would be. . . as usual.......2004-07-07

I checked this book out from the library for some summer fun reading. I've not read the first two books in the series, but the blurb made it look interesting and I am a true sucker for female detective fiction. I won't go into detail about the plot, but simply put it involves the drownings of two young women that take place thirty years and two continents apart. Poppy Rice, FBI Agent extraordinaire (apparently, since she doesn't seem to have to follow any standard FBI procedures)is asked to investigate both -the older one by a friend and his mother from Ireland and the more recent one by her boss (whose position at the FBI is never really defined). Her investigation leads to a web of incest, family cover-up, priestly misconduct and then . . . not much more.

It's too bad, because there were moments in this book where I was really interested. The incest plotline was compelling and the characters in the family were well defined. I wanted to know more about them and how they would handle the fallout. Unfortunately, the plot switched almost immediately to the priest and the pretty much unbelievable solution to the crimes - and the rest of the book is just a waste of time and words.

I used to think that you had to be really famous to publish a book without any input from an editor (Martha Grimes and Patricia Cornwell I'm talking to you!!). But now it is obvious to me that most editors must be asleep at the wheel.

5 out of 5 stars And I smiled along with her (when I wasn't being shocked).......2004-06-22

Back from a failed vacation, Poppy Rice is summoned by an Irish-Catholic fire marshall to look into a thirty-year-old death by drowning in Ireland. Poppy becomes entirely engrossed in the case when she recognizes the parallels between the Irish case and the case of an Irish-American girl who drowned in Boston just a year and a half before. Teamed up with Rocky Patel, a Boston homicide cop, for the American case, Poppy digs into the troubled history of the Boston girl, and unearths tragedies neither her family nor the elite community in which they exist want exposed. Strangely enough, a DNA match links the two girls, despite the time span and the distance between their deaths. Poppy uncovers a tale of child molestation, prostitution, and a Catholic sense of shame and faith.

Poppy is back in full-force, and the constant on-edge feeling the reading gives is more in-tune with the promise of the first book in the series, Love Her Madly. Poppy is a character who, though perhaps a little distant, is very open about her life and with her opinions. The book is so well-written that the reader, though puzzled about some of the things Poppy says along the way, comes to understand exactly what she meant. Tense, fast-paced, and witty, this is a series worth the time.

In Bram Stoker's book Dracula, it is finally Quincey Morris who actually does the deed of killing Dracula, just before he himself dies of injuries inflicted upon him during the climactic chase.
But...what if Dracula didn't actually die? (After all, it takes a lot more than a knife wound to kill a vampire!)
And...what if Quincey didn't die of his wounds either, but merely changed, instead?
This is the premise of P.N. Elrod's excellent novel, Quincey Morris, Vampire. Quincey awakens after his supposed death to find himself in Dracula's castle, where he learns, over time, How To Be A Vampire. There are some important differences between Quincey and Dracula, however. The most fundamental difference is that Quincey's change to vampire actually came about by an affair years earlier with one Nora Jones, the same vampire who is responsible for changing Elrod's other creations, Jonathan Barrett and Jack Fleming. Therefore Dracula and Quincey are different breeds of vampire. Although they do have many things in common (both drink blood to survive, both have great physical strength, and neither will ever age) they also have some major differences. For example, Dracula can transform into a wolf, a bat, or into mist, but Quincey cannot. He can, however disappear or become transparent and "ghostlike." Dracula requires an invitation to enter someone's dwelling; Quincey needs no such thing. But the biggest difference is simply in their respective temperaments and personalities: Vampire Dracula is as big a creep as mortal Dracula was; mortal Quincey was a decent person, and becoming vampire hasn't changed that.
After leaving Transylvania, Quincey eventually returns to England to reassure his friends and fellow vampire-hunters that he is still the same Quincey, even if he is a little different. He also becomes involved with Bertrice Holmwood, Arthur Holmwood's sister. She is an actor, painter, and generally lives a bohemian lifestyle. She is smart, honest, and speaks her mind, and she and Quincey begin a marvelous friendship!
Much of the dialog in this book is about events that occurred in Stoker's book, so if you haven't read it before, or if it's been awhile, you might want to read or re-read it.
Elrod leaves the door wide-open for several sequels, and I hope that someday this will turn into the first book of a Quincey Morris series. Quincey still has loads of stories to tell, and I am eager to read them all!

5 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS!.......2003-10-23

Quincey P. Morris helped Professor Van Helsing, Mina and John Harker, and the rest kill Dracula. Or so he thought.

The quest also killed Quincey. Or so he, and everyone else, thought.

Quincey woke to the night, surrounded by hungary wolves. One of them, the leader, was Dracula ... quite alive, figuratively speaking.

Quincey had become vampire. However, he was a different breed than Dracula. Quincey still had his soul. To survive Quincey must quickly adapt to his new type of life. Once done, he planned to return to his group of friends who still grieved over Quincey's death. But he was not sure they would accept him in his new state. And Professor Van Helsing believed the only good vampire was a dead vampire!

***** This book ROCKS! P.N. Elrod has done an excellent job continuing the story. I fully expect this book to win awards. Highly recommended reading! *****

P.N. Elrod writes some crackling fun vampire pulp fiction in her Jack Fleming series. In this book, she tells the story of Quincey Morris, whom you may remember as the Texan with the Bowie knife in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Here we find out what "really" happened, after Van Helsing, Harker, and Morris chased Dracula back to Transylvania. Quincey is a vampire of another kind from Dracula, and determined to get his life back, even if he is dead. After a load of adventures and trying to convince his vampire hunter friends of his good intentions, all is resolved with a twist.

5 out of 5 stars The Return of the First Slayer!.......2003-03-15

Texan Quincey P. Morris was the one who finally killed Dracula. He brought an end to the battle between the Prince of Darkness and Van Helsing's hunters. But in the end Quincey was also killed.
NOW Quincey is a vampire. He finds himself trying to adapt to his changes. Where will he get the blood? And how will his friends deal with his condition? Greet him with open arms or with wooden stakes?
P.N. Elrod links all her series together with the Great Prince. In the book we meet Count Dracula, Lord Richard d'Orleans from her 'Forever Knights' tie-in books, and find out that Quincy once met Nora Jones, who created the vampire Jonathan Barrett (who is the grand sire of Jack Fleming from the 'Blood Files' series).
Now all she needs is werewolves!

5 out of 5 stars powerful tool for managing your health.......2006-12-17

This book is an authoritative reference on bowel care, written in a very convincing and captivating manner. It is not a book to just read, but to actually use and apply for improving your health. It explains very clearly how a colonic irrigation should be done (called "colema" here), which may entail some additonal expense for people who want to get started right away on the program (the colema board is the most important piece of hardware required, it costs around $250, but I found it is absolutely worth it, because it is so easy to clean and store; the supplements for the 7-day cleanse are more-or-less common, and they run another tens of dollars or so). Everything described in the book works exactly as advertised, a very stubborn eczema on my right hand cleared up almost completely after the 7-day cleanse, and yes, what comes out of you during the colema is extremely ugly and smells like death. I have used Dr. Jensen's program as the starting point in a more complex detoxification program in conjunction with saunas, because of some nasty symptoms that no doctor could explain or cure, and it has helped me tremendously, good luck to you, too, help is at hand.

5 out of 5 stars A lesson long forgotten on the importance of bowel care.......2006-06-12

Wow! This book is an eye opener. I'm saying this because most of us have never heard about the teachings in this book, although probably our grand-grandparents still knew it. The modern society and lifestyle made us neglect the laws of the Nature when taking care of our own body, to our own peril. Unfortunately, these days not even the doctors are aware of the importance of bowel care, even though until the 40's- 50's this was a well known fact. Probably after that the discovery of modern "cures" - such as antibiotics - and the growing power of pharmaceutical companies pushed these away from the medical agenda.
Dr, Jensen provides insights of the studies from the end of 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. At that time, it was a well known fact - in the medical community and probably elsewhere - that toxemia is the root of most diseases. As a matter of fact, Dr. Jensen says "The name of a disease is given depending on where the toxins are located". Most of the toxins enter our body through the digestive tract, together with our food and drinks. Then, if we have a poor diet, we have toxic wastes. If we don't eat healthy, the bowel transit time slows down, and the wastes, instead of being eliminated, stay there, putrefy further, and become a breeding ground for bad bacterias and other parasites. After a while, the body cannot stand it any more, and the toxins and parasites enter the bloodstream, and settle in inherent weak parts.
Sir W. Arbuthnot Lane, physician to the British Royal Family in the late nineteenth century and dawn of twentieth century was a master surgeon, and noticed in multiple occasions that operating the bowel cleared diseases located elsewhere in the body body. In his final 25 years of his life, he switched from practicing medicine to teaching nutrition and bowel care. This is only one example of what was well known in the 20's. BTW, did you know that the word "doctor" comes from Latin "docere", which means "to teach"? Unfortunately, this is not the case any more - doctors today are focused of treating instead of teaching patients to prevent diseases. I guess it makes much more sense financially.
Says Dr. Jensen, bowel is the king. It is the most important organ to care for. The bowel has very few nervous receptors - otherwise you would feel digestion and bowel moving food almost all day long. So, if you can feel you have a bowel problem, you can be dead sure that there is a serious problem!
Dr. Jensen provides some anatomy lessons about the digestive tract, about possible problems (constipation, diveticulitis, etc.), and the importance of chemical balance in the body - sodium (the carrier of many nutrients), potassium (muscle building), calcium (bones, teeth) - and how they are used by the body to neutralize some bad foods we are eating. But, after a while, the body exhausts the resources and disease starts to settle. The only way to get those is to eat healthy foods - processed as little as possible, preferably raw. For example, the body makes little use of table salt - it is inorganic and it is thrown away if you go over even a small quantity. Instead, the body needs organic salt - that is - the sodium which is part of the plants and animal tissues - that one can be easily assimilated.
In a later chapter, Dr. Jensen explains his biggest discovery: he learn why the bowel is so important, and why parts of the bowel are associated with specific organs. That way, he was able to explain what he had learned from his teachers and he had observed on his own pacients. Basically, he studied the development of the human embryo, and learned that the bowel appears very early, and that specific organs develop from tissue which was initially bowel wall!
The book continues with presenting his "Ultimate Tissue Cleansing Program" - which is something you must consider very seriously. Then, he presents a 7 weeks (tissue) building and replacement program, to be used right after the cleansing program. He even presents menu suggestions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. BTW, the modern toilet is not good at all for our health, instead, the "natural" position - still used by most of the world - helps most with bowel care.
Dr. Jensen presents six nutritional sins of the modern civilization and nine dietary laws to follow. For example, did you know pasteurized milk is very bad four your health, let alone ultra-pasteurized? Homogenized milk is even less healthy ! There were experiments and hidden - now pushed away by affected companies - that show the milk is only good raw! To quote Dr. Jensen, "In other words, pasteurization is a way of letting farms get by with reduced standards of cleanliness".
The author presents us his Health and Harmony Food Regimen - which is a balanced diet to be used on a continuous basis, and is really very balanced and healthy.
Not least, the book ends with amazing pictures showing the incredible eliminations from his patients' bowels - some of the feet-long and rubber-hard, and how diseases (ulcerations, arthritis, psoriasis) treated by following his program
Buy this book and practice from it, you'll thank yourself for the years to come!

A Complete Program for Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management by Bernard Jensen is an excellent book on the subject. Explanations given on colone and parasite cleansings are so extensive. I am sure all of you will feel a lot better once you do these two major things. It also has some photos so that you will have a better understanding of what is what. Dr Jensen says herbal cleansing is much cheaper economically. It is an extremely good book for people who are willing to experiment on new methods. You have to see it to believe what you have been storing inside your body for all these years.

After eliminating my coffee habit with the help of a wonderful coffee substitute made from soya beans called "Soyffee", I'm feeling so much better. My doctor recommended it to help lower my cholesterol and promote strong bones. It's available online at www.S o y c o f f e e.com.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I ever read.......2004-12-12

I read this book about 10 years ago, I couldn't do the enemas I was too squimish. But I did do an herbal cleanse and Dr Jensen was right on the money! Yep, I've seen it with my own eyes in my own toilet--the black shriveled up plaque. I was so excited when I saw that stuff cause I knew it was in there, somewhere. I lost weight from doing this, lost all my acne, on face and back and had tons of energy. I'm now doing it again, 10 years later.

One of the most important things you should also do is a parasite cleanse. I was doing an herbal one and couldn't believe what was inside my intenstins. Tape worms!!!! there were 100s and 100s of pieces of tape worms in the toilet. When I saw that i screamed and jumped to the other side of the bathroom. Talk about freaky!

One of my pet peeves are books that ramble on and on, but don't give a lot of instructional advice. I also loathe books that tell you they'd love to spend time telling you something, but you'll have to buy their other four books to get that information. In this book, Bernard Jensen does both. I'm not sure if this was just a series of notes that he wrote, half page at a time, and then his kids put together in this awful text, or if it was the genuine work of a truly unskilled writer.

While I would never get my hair cut in a salon where all the stylists had truly bad haircuts, I also wonder how Jensen can expect us to believe this is the best way to health and mental accuity when he can't organize his thoughts into a readible book. Several things are mentioned as important to health, including enemas, but there is no instructional advice on how to actually give one. There is a lengthy section on giving yourself a colema with a slant bed, which would require a very large room and an extraordinary amount of time collecting and assembling the needed materials and then building your own colema device. I find this rather ridiculous. Human beings are not perfect and to build one of these devices to actually use on a regular basis (never mind finding a large enough room to accomodate it with a drain in the middle for the putrified waste) and house it is beyond what any normal person would be capable of. I believe in the power of herbs and Jensen's suggestions on herb therapy amount to taking liquid chlorophyll in water, one mention of herb teas, and a few mentions of taking alfalfa tablets. That's about it.

Have I mentioned the flip-flopping back and forth regarding colonics? First, he says they're good, then he says they're bad, then they're good, but only with the right technician. It goes on and on through each half page thought and these thoughts are very disjointed. I find it hard to believe that a lucid man with good health would ramble on and on and change topics so frequently, only to come back to the intial topic 20 pages later and cover the same material, once again incompletely. I found this book a complete waste of my time and money and am rather sorry I took the hours to read it. Bernard Jensen was a great iridologist, but his health books leave a lot to be desired. I'd recommend Jack Ritchason or Louise Tenney instead. This man's forte was his colema device, not regular health habits.

I'm sad this book is out of print. Ten years ago I read this book and decided I needed to cleanse.

You will see dramatic pictures of what comes out of people after they take pancreatin and do a colonic.

I did this pancreatin cleanse 10 years ago and could not believe what came out. Essentially, when you eat the standard American diet, you are not eliminating, and the food starts to build up on the walls of your colon.

Year after year, you build up more waste in your colon until it is a tar-like consistency. This book shows pictures of what comes out of people after a cleanse and all the different diseases that were cured by cleansing.

There are step by step instructions to help you understand the process.

This book is a classic and should be in every home!
